In this episode of the podcast, Grizz "sits down" with Colin Eberhardt, Technology Director at Scott Logic about his upcoming talk at the Open Source Strategy Forum in London October 5th. They discuss Colin's background, modern software supply chain issues, and then how to drive open source to be more sustainable, for financial services and beyond.
Open Source Sustainability and Our Corporate Social Responsibility - Colin Eberhardt, Scott Logic
Modern software is increasingly complex, made up of hundreds or thousands of open source components, hidden away in deeply-nested dependency trees. Just how much do we know about these open source components that are an integral part of our products? What are the risks associated with their usage, and our exposure? Within the financial services industry, most often the solution is to build up a robust defence against these perils. Security scans, licence checkers - creating a walled-garden that harm the wider open source ecosystem. In this talk Colin will take a closer look at the make-up of modern software supply chains - where this code comes from, who authored it and how it is distributed. Ultimately asking ourselves the question “is this sustainable?” Despite numerous efforts to address this challenge; crowdfunding, sponsorship and highlighting critical infrastructure projects, this problem is growing. To solve it we need a reset in how we view this precious and fragile asset. Much like the environment, grass-roots activism can only go so far, to really make a difference large corporations need to wake up to their responsibility and make genuine and tangible commitments.
Colin divides his time between leading the R&D team and providing advisory consultancy to clients. Widely recognized as a thought leader, Colin has a reputation throughout development circles as an expert in mobile technologies. He has also directed the team that developed a Securities Lending System for one of the world’s most instantly recognizable banks. A published author, blogger and tech visionary, Colin still finds time to practice his considerable skills as a 7-ball juggler.

In this episode of the podcast, Grizz "sits down" with Andrew Aitken, Global Open Source Leader at Wipro about his upcoming talk at the Open Source Strategy Forum in London October 5th. They discuss Andrew's background and position as lead on the FINOS Open Source Readiness SIG; what Open Source Readiness is; and then a little insight into his talk about The FINOS Open Source Maturity Model and How to Apply It.
The FINOS Open Source Maturity Model and How to Apply It - Andrew Aitken, Wipro Ltd.
**As financial services organizations continue to adopt open source at an ever-increasing pace there becomes a general recognition that it is a strategic asset, rather than simply a collection of ad-hoc components. Open source can drive significant benefits for an organization across multiple dimensions including strategic, financial, organizational, and technological if managed effectively. But, understanding how to capture those benefits while minimizing any potential risks can be a daunting task. It starts with understanding where you are as an organization on the open source maturity curve and the associated traits and attributes and how to identify and move to the most appropriate level for your company.
FINOS, working with Wipro, has implemented an open source maturity model and provided the tools to help all financial services organizations conduct a self-assessment and create a model and plans for how to move to the optimal level for them.
This talk will introduce the maturity model, the open source assessment surveys, and other tools and explain how to use them so every member can create their own open source maturity map**
Andrew Aitken is the GM and Global Open Source Practice Leader for Wipro Ltd., a premier global systems integrator, and a leading open source strategy consultant. In his 22 years of experience he launched the industry’s first open source strategy consulting firm, Olliance Group (acquired by Black Duck Software), launched the Open Source Think Tank held in Napa, CA and Paris, France - a highly regarded event regularly attended by over 100 top open source thought leaders for over 10 years. Andrew has advised organizations such as the White House Office of CIO, Microsoft and IBM, more than 20 startups and VC firms, and dozens of other enterprises on their open source strategies.

In this episode of the podcast, Grizz "sits down" with Kris West, Principal Engineer at Cosaic, about his upcoming talk at the Open Source Strategy Forum in London October 5th. They discuss Kris's background and position at lead on the FDC3 project; what FDC3 is and who it should matter to; and then a little insight into the FDC3 Workbench that Coasic is contributing to FINOS.
FDC3 Fast and Easy: Introducing the FDC3 Workbench for Vendors - Kris West, Cosaic - Kris West
As desktop interoperability gains momentum, app vendors must prepare for expectations from clients who look for FDC3-enabled applications to join their integrated desktops. Meeting FDC3 standards allows your app to easily interoperate with other applications (without the need to coordinate with their developers first) and therefore secure a spot on clients' smart desktops. Getting your application FDC3-enabled is easier than ever with the new FINOS-contributed project, FDC3 Workbench. This new developer tool makes it easy to verify that your application communicates correctly with other apps using FDC3 protocol, while additionally providing a fully-featured desktop agent—Finsemble—to develop in. Don’t be left out of the interop movement—join this session to see how this open-sourced workbench can assist you today.

In this episode of the podcast Danese Cooper, Founder & Chair of InnerSource Commons, and long time open source veteran discusses Debunking Common Fears about Open Source (a great segway into our Open Source Strategy Forums upcoming in London and New York in October and November - that deal with open source in the regulated industry of financial services).
How can a regulated-industry business get ready for Open Source? That’s really a multi-layered question because of special requirements created by those regulations. The process of developing Open Source readiness through an internal InnerSource practice has been a focus in FinTech for most of the past decade, thanks to success stories from the likes of Lloyd’s Bank. How does the fact that FinTech companies are subject to strict regulation play into undertaking such a transformation? FINOS’s James McLeod was tweeting with Danese Cooper about a podcast they’d recorded when a follower asked that seemingly simple question, and out of the resulting conversation comes this webinar! We’ll be looking at issues such as PCI-compliance, GDPR-compliance, distributed-ledger systems such as Blockchain, and new regulations surrounding Transfer Pricing and exploring strategies to mitigate risk and what lessons can be learned from innovative new companies.

On this episode of the podcast we talk open source readiness, compliance, and how to understand the copyleft license. Copyleft licenses like the GNU GPL come with a higher compliance burden than more permissive licenses, because they require licensees to provide source code to recipients -- sometimes just for the open source component, and sometimes for any derivative work produced by the licensee. These licenses therefore raise the thorniest issues of license compliance.
In this podcast, FINOS Open Source Readiness lead Aaron Williamson discusses:

In this episode of the podcast, Dave Neary, Red Hat Community Architect gives a presentation on Assessing the Health of an Open Source Project: What are the things to look out for when evaluating the community health of a project (and how does community health factor into long-term sustainability)?
SHOW NOTES Talk Description:
A healthy open source project is one that you expect to be around in several years, and will continue to develop, with new features, regular updates, and conscientious maintainers. Healthy projects demonstrate open practices, use open infrastructure to engage with their users, and cultivate an open culture, with the goal of becoming more sustainable.
In this presentation, we will describe some of the key factors you can examine to evaluate if a project is healthy, and can be expected to be around in the long term. As the number of these factors a project has going for it increases, its health rating, and as a result the confidence you can have in it, increases too.

In this episode of the podcast, Silona Bonewald of IEEE SA OPEN talks about the Understanding the InnerSource Checklist, that was originally developed while she was at PayPal. She is joined by Clare Dillon of FINOS Associate Member InnerSource Commons about how this checklist can help build upon the maturity matrix (that the FINOS InnerSource SIG is discussing now), plus other questions on InnerSource.
SHOW NOTES Abstract: Come learn more about an InnerSource checklist developed at PayPal. Hear more success stories with InnerSource and how we codified our practices to help more teams at PayPal and beyond.
Silona Bonewald will share a checklist that guides you through various steps needed to produce software using the InnerSource approach, whether it’s company-wide or just for one team. She will also explore how the checklist is evolving now at IEEE and how they are adding to it via templates and automation.
Silona’s talk was followed by a Q&A, moderated by Clare Dillon, of InnerSource Commons.

In this episode of the podcast, Tosha Ellison and Grizz Griswold (both of FINOS) interview Andrew Stein, Executive Director at J.P. Morgan Chase, and Lead Maintainer on the FINOS Perspective open source project. We discuss the project itself, its genesis, problems that Perspective solves for what users, and then pull in examples of what the project and the software can do. We also look at who should, and why they should get involved in consuming and contributing to the open source project.
Andrew also gave a presentation and demo on "How to Build an Order Book Simulation with Perspective" last month - so check that out too: https://www.finos.org/blog/us-open-source-in-fintech-meetup-31-march-21
BACKGROUND FOR THE FINOS PERSPECTIVE PROJECT Perspective is an interactive visualization component for large, real-time datasets. Originally developed for J.P. Morgan's trading business, Perspective makes it simple to build real-time & user configurable analytics entirely in the browser, or in concert with Python and/or Jupyterlab. Use it to create reports, dashboards, notebooks and applications, with static data or streaming updates via Apache Arrow. As a library, Perspective provides both:

Andrew has been a web developer for 15 years. Despite winning the 2018 Nueske’s Bacon Night Award as a member of team “Lard and In Charge” at “Hogs for the Cause” BBQ festival, Andrew rejected a life of perennial BBQ fame and returned to programming full-time where he currently works on Perspective at JPMC.

The financial services industry is still in the early stages of opening up to open source development, and FINOS is home to some of the industry’s most significant collaborations. This panel discussion focused on the experiences of open source maintainers operating behind a bank’s firewall. Participants from Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Citigroup discussed what it takes to get an open source project approved, the challenges of collaborating with developers outside their institutions, and how financial institutions can improve the lives of their open source developers.
The panel featured:
Stephen Goldbaum - Executive Director, Morgan Stanley
Peter Thomas - Distinguished Engineer, Technology, Data, and Innovation, Deutsche Bank
Beeke-Marie Nelke - Vice President, Legend Product Team, Goldman Sachs
Paul Groves - Lead Architect, Client Onboarding, Citigroup

Season 3, 2nd edition of 2021 of the FINOS Open Source in Fintech Podcast
In this podcast, our Director of Community, James McLeod has a chat with Enrico Trentin and Matthew Richards of Diffblue, primarily about the code coverage paradox, the theme of one of our recent Open Source in Fintech Meetups.
Enrico is the Diffblue Developer Relations Lead, and Matthew Richards (or Matt since there are two Matthews, and the other happens to be the CEO) is the Diffblue Head of Product. Diffblue is a new silver member of FINOS, and works on automating tedious and repetitive tasks for developers within unit testing, using AI or Artificial intelligence.
James is our Director of Community for FINOS, and host for many of our Open Source in Fintech Podcasts and Meetups.
During this interview Enrico and Matthew discuss unit testing and test driven development, the tradeoffs in software delivery for both the developer and business sides of the house, code coverage within the software development lifecycle, test quality, identifying which parts of your code introduce risk, and then AI or Artificial Intelligence in software development, driverless cars, Skynet, and the Terminator… hmmm…
So please enjoy this interview, check out our previous episodes, and subscribe to the podcast for some great upcoming discussions on open source, financial services, fintech, and how they all fit together.

Season 3, 1st edition of 2021 of the FINOS Open Source in Fintech Podcast: Dan Abramov of React Core Team Interview.
So… welcome to 2021. We’re looking forward to a better year overall, even with some “interesting” beginnings.
To start you out this year, while we’re working on our 2021 meetups and interviews, we want to highlight a few great discussions we’ve had within the community over the past couple of months.
Our first of the year is an interview / fireside chat between Dan Abramov and James McLeod, recorded at the Open Source Strategy Forum (which is FINOS’s annual open source in financial services conference).
Dan is a software engineer at Facebook, member of the React Core team, co-author of Create React App - and well regarded in the javascript community.
James is our Director of Community for FINOS, and host for many of our Open Source in Fintech Podcasts and Meetups.
During this interview we learn whether a project like React would work without backing from a large company like Facebook, whether Hacktoberfest raised issues for the React Core team, and how Facebook promotes InnerSource projects to open source, and more.
So please enjoy this interview, check out our previous episodes, and subscribe to the podcast for some great upcoming discussions on open source, financial services, fintech, and how they all fit together.

Season 2, 6th and last edition of 2020 of the FINOS Open Source in Fintech Podcast: InnerSource Commons at the FINOS Open Source Readiness.
We’re we’re working on changing up our podcast for 2021 a little, to expand the type and quality of content we bring to you through this podcast. Forged out of the “uh oh, Covid, what do we do when we can’t engage people at in-person events” that happened to everyone this year, Our podcasts in 2020, were based around interviews from the virtual meetups we started in this year.
In the coming year, we will of course have interviews with FINOS project leaders, members, and other industry thought leaders, but will also start including panel discussions and fireside chats that you may have missed from some of our events, case studies and deep dives, and then we may just start including you in some of our FINOS employee chats and office hours we do with the community - basically anything that we can do to provide you with more value within the world of open source, financial services, fintech, and banking tech.
So this particular episode is a preview of that.
At our last Open Source Readiness meeting of 2020 (December 9, 2020), we featured the first in a series of collaborations with InnerSource Commons to promote best practice around InnerSource in financial services. InnerSource is the application of open source software development practices to internal software development projects. It's a great way for companies to increase collaboration within their organization, and for developers to gain skills that will make them effective participants in open source projects. We have definitely found this helpful within financial services in banks that are still looking to venture into open source.
We had guest panelists from InnerSource Commons, Deutsche Bank, Capital One, Lloyds Banking Group, and FINOS’ Open Source Readiness project. Check our show notes for a complete list of panelists and bios.
Sit back and learn as our friend Danese Cooper, president and founder of Innersource Commons, and a multi-decade veteran of the open source world leads a discussion on Innersource patterns for the Financial Services Industry.

In this ninth edition of the FINOS Open Source in Fintech Podcast, FINOS Director of Community James McLeod interviews Nearform's VP of Strategic Initiatives, Danese Cooper after their FINOS Virtual Meetup presentation on July 1, 2020. Head to the FINOS.org site to see the video of the presentation, along with Danese's slides.
Danese will be speaking at the FINOS & Linux Foundation Open Source Strategy Forum (OSSF).

Head to the FINOS.org site to see the video of the presentation, along with Andrew's slides.
Due to Covid-19 impact, financial services need to explore and understand the new normal – ensure stronger business continuity, engage and enable a remote developer workforce and facilitate digital business models at optimal costs. Open source already plays a key role in many financial services organizations, and with its ability to drive innovation, support organizational and cultural change and reduce costs, it’s going to become an even larger part of the post-Covid IT landscape. A robust and enterprise-wide open source strategy is key to maximizing the benefits of open source while managing any potential risks.. Open source can be a key to accelerating the journey to the new normal.
A Deloitte article on the impact of Covid-19 on Banking and Capital Markets focuses on key questions they advise boards to ask themselves, and our reference on how open source can be a part of the solution

Generating test data is a challenge for many organisations, whether because the production data is sensitive, because there isn’t enough of it, or because new data structures need to be tested. In this fourth edition of the FINOS Open Source in Fintech Podcast, FINOS Director of Community James McLeod interviews EPAM's VP & Head of Digital Engagement Practice for Wealth and Asset Management, Heiko Sundermann after his FINOS Virtual Meetup presentation on April 29, 2020. Head to the FINOS.org site to see the video of the presentation, along with Heiko's slides.
Guest speaker: Heiko Sundermann, VP, Head of Digital Engagement Practice for wealth and asset management for EPAM,will be presenting on the "EPAM GLUE Project: Developing a Unified Entity and Data Model for the Buy-Side".
Buy-side firms are under enormous pressure not to miss out on the digitalisation wave. Changing client demands, regulatory pressure and the rapid adoption of structured quantitative investment management approaches are fuelling investment into digitalization and data driven Asset & Wealth Management. Buy-side firms are often held back by legacy infrastructure and inappropriate data storage. Open API architectures provide a route to adopt best of breed solutions and leverage specialized fintech offerings, but the integration costs of these approaches tend to be costly. Traditional Data-Warehousing approaches are also not suited to the performance needed for modern digital and analytical solutions; they struggle to adhere to the stringent regulatory requirements inherent in data-privacy, cross-border and data lineage.
EPAM have created an investment management eco-system delivering a comprehensive set of components along the investment management value chain developed by EPAM or by fintech partners. The foundation of this ECO-System is EPAM GLUE which is a unified entity and data model serving as a common semantic layer to all components. EPAM GLUE provides the flexibility to model hierarchical data structures as well as the complex legal entity structure that buy-side firms are facing. Concurrently it addresses the problems of data-security, auditability and privacy which minimises integration costs and implementation risks.

In this first edition of the FINOS Open Source in Fintech Podcast, FINOS Director of Community James McLeod interviews FDC3 Project Lead Nick Kolba after the first FINOS Virtual Meetup on April 1, 2020.
The FDC3 community is delighted to announce the release of FDC3 1.1!
In its 2+ years as an open source organization, FDC3 has brought key financial firms together to set, and put into production, standards for application interoperability. As we approach the release of the FDC3 1.1 standard, this webinar will look at what's new in FDC3 and how we got there through a collaborative, open source approach.
This is the first point update to the FDC3 standard since 1.0 was released a year ago. 1.1 has been an extremely collaborative process with active contribution and input from 10 different firms and a lot of input from teams putting 1.0 into production. We especially want to give a huge thanks to all of the stakeholders who worked so hard to make this happen!
Be sure to check out the presentation that Nick Kolba, FDC3 Project Lead/Chair, gave during the FINOS virtual Meetup on April 1, 2020. It includes great information on FDC3 1.1.
As always, this is a community effort and we welcome and encourage everyone to get involved! You can do so by reaching out to us on Github or at fdc3@finos.org.
Nick will be speaking about FDC3 at the FINOS & Linux Foundation Open Source Strategy Forum (OSSF).
