In Matthew 24, Jesus lets His followers know that there will be signs indicating that His Second Coming is very soon. He says wars, famines, earthquakes, the spreading of deceptions and of infectious diseases will prevail on a worldwide scale. He then finishes with a warning parable. Many people who live in remote parts of Peru, have to endure these kinds of conditions, which are hazardous to their health. High in the Andes mountains, with snow and ice and freezing temperatures, many of the Quechua people, descendants of the Inca, do not live in warm, healthy homes, like we do in Canada. Recently, ADRA Canada got involved, helping these people in remote parts of the Andes mountains to build warm, well-ventilated houses for themselves and their families. Sandra and Ken Murphy faced one trial after another: their son was murdered, and later, Sandra was hit by an illness that caused her to become a double amputee and also to lose most of her fingers. Over the last few weeks, historic flooding occurred in British Columbia: mudslides, highways washed out, power outages, towns evacuated, land lost, vehicles lost, and lives lost. Bridges and mountain passes were also washed away, which meant that people were stranded alongside mountainous roads and highways, sometimes in their vehicles, and sometimes they had to abandon them. It’s hard to imagine how frightening that would be to be caught out in the cold in the middle of nowhere late at night, far from your home, not knowing how long you were going to be stranded or if you are going to even make it. One of the places where many people were stranded was along a back road near Hope, BC. A Christian campground called Camp Hope gladly took in close to 300 travelers. Clay and Sarah Weppler were both very active at the highest levels of Canadian winter sports - Sarah as a figure skater and Clay playing ice hockey. Their lives were challenged by a longing for much more than their ambitious sporting careers offered. At the end of March 2011, Holly Albersworth was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer. She thought she had beat it, but a second diagnosis came in 2013. From 2014 to February 2017 Holly was diagnosed with cancer five more times. For her seventh, and final, diagnosis, she had her left arm amputated. At this stage no one would fault you for asking, “How in the world is she still standing?” But, today, Holly is much more than a cancer survivor. She is a child of God, a loving wife, an adored mother of two sons, a diligent student who is completing her Master's Degree in Educational Research, and is living an active lifestyle as an amputee.

An odd thing happens when people, birds, bees, and horses decide to work together instead of working separately. The combined effect of the interaction of two or more is greater than the sum of their individual results. Canadian geese flying in formation, for example, can fly much further and faster than the sum of the individual birds flying alone. They fly more as one BIG bird than as many individuals. Daniel Cullen, a transient homeless man, lived on the streets for over 25 years in cities and towns across Canada. As an addict, slowly coming apart mentally and emotionally, he used drugs to numb the pain. The official psychiatric records say that he had “little hope of recovery,” yet he did more than just recover. He is now thriving and for the last 20 years helping others recover.

"God needed something from me, and I wasn’t willing to give it to Him.” Although it's not been easy, when Lorne discovered what God wanted for him, he was set free and found his joy and freedom in willing service to God and to others.
After hearing the truth about her mother, Jolly Grace faced confusion and a host of emotions, which caused her to question her sense of reality and identity. She turned to God, and He provided a core group of friends and put a song in her heart, assuring her that He saw her and He loved her.
Neil Peralta was the only witness to a murder. A woman, who was living in the lower level of his house, was murdered by her husband. At the age of 14, Neil overheard screaming coming from downstairs. When the screaming subsided, the bloodstained father came upstairs carrying a knife in one hand and his five-month-old baby girl in the other. The baby girl’s name was Jolly Grace.
