For more than 50 years, Shirley has been a coach, teacher, author, speaker, and body image specialist helping women, men, teens, and children resolve their issues with food and eating. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Minnesota in 1971 and 1975, respectfully. The author of Inner Eating (Thomas Nelson 1991), she created Innergetics in 1994. Shirley has continued to refine the Innergetics process to make it a much more comprehensive, holistic solution than mindful eating alone. Innergetics offers tools that allow you to take a conscious, structured approach, so that you have more control over when you start and stop eating. Every baby is born knowing how to do this; Innergetics helps us recover that knowledge. Clients who adhere to this simple process not only lose weight but keep it off permanently. And they do it from a sense of abundance and respect for the body, rather than through deprivation and willpower. Innergetics will help you regain the true joy of eating. It will teach you how to tune in to your body and feed it what it needs, each and every time you eat. Shirley’s program is all about choice and respect; she will never tell you what to eat or when (that’s completely up to you). If you wait until you are hungry, you can eat whatever you want! Just this past year she developed an online course to teach the Innergetics Process to a wider audience.

Kavita Desai Dakoji, PhD, LP is a a self-proclaimed psychology superfan who loves challenging perceptions about health- especially kid’s pain. Dr. Kavita started out working as a pediatric pain psychologist at Children’s Minnesota. After a decade hearing families skepticism, doubts, and uncertainty that psychology can actually change their health, Dr. Kavita decided to do something about it. And, Peace Out Pain was born – a rebellious company setting out to challenge society’s perceptions about kid’s health, particularly related pediatric stress, anxiety, and pain.

Exciting Projects Dr. Kavita is Working on:

  • Active supporter of Shout Out Loud MN. focused on a mission to normalize the conversation about mental wellness
  • Peace Out Press: Publish books and games to reinforce Peace Out Pain's mission, while encouraging other clinicians to do the same
  • Athlete Unpacked: Guided conversations with Dr. Kavita and top athletes on what they have done to improve their performance in sport
  • Interactive workshops focused on teaching skills to different age groups

Description of Dr. Kavita's book - Pain, It's All in Your Head (Just Like Everything Else):Tired of being dismissed by those five painful words, “It’s all in your head”?

Feeling misunderstood when you say “I hurt!”?

Then this is the book for you!

Through humor and friendship, kids learn how the brain “receives” messages and creates sensations. Because the brain is in your head, all sensations (even pain!) are in your head. Quite literally, Just Like Everything Else. With easy to follow logic, those once hurtful words It's In Your Head loose power.

Written as a tool to educate and empower kids, teens, and adults who experience challenging and real medical symptoms, this book is the first step towards breaking the stigma and understanding that symptoms are REAL and IN YOUR HEAD. At the same time.

Get started on your healing journey today!

Everyone in David Nathan's family is a teacher or teacher adjacent. Both of his parents were teachers, his twin sister is a math teacher today and his little sister is a speech pathologist. David knew at an early age he did not want to become a teacher because classroom management seemed overwhelming. After working in IT for 10 years as a project manager, he took some career assessments and everything came back saying he should be a teacher or a psychologist. After talking to some psychologists and volunteering for a crisis phone line, he decided to go back to school to become a psychologist.

He loves his work and thinks he has the best job in the world because he gets to help his patients live the most successful, fulfilling lives they can. David enjoys working with children, teens, young adults and their families on a wide variety of issues including anger management, anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, adoption, and screen addiction. He is a developmental psychologist who examines the many factors that impact how a person's mind and body experience things in the present. One of his biggest accomplishments was partnering with his wife to chair a playground committee that raised $42,000 in one year to build a playground for a school in St. Paul that did not have one.

Outside of work, he is a father of twin girls and is married to the woman he admires most in the world. He enjoys playing baseball, reading, playing board games with his family and camping.

Tessa “Tess” Gittleman, MA, LMFT, is a Relational Therapist, Public Speaker, and System’s Coach currently working at her private practice, Talk Tutor, PLLC, in Golden Valley, MN. Tess’ background is eclectic, working in Advertising, Food Media, and with incarcerated populations before a chronic health diagnosis forced a pivot. Tess realized what she really loved was connecting to people in meaningful ways, and decided to become the one thing she said she never would: a therapist.

After pivoting to mental health, Tess worked across residential and school-based settings, providing services to people across a variety of backgrounds, from queer to conservative, seven to seventy five, individuals and groups. She specializes in helping people who are “acutely aware of the problem” but feel helpless to change it despite outward success. These people often identify as perfectionistic, anxious, and/or with Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder. Her approach can best be described as collaborative, transparent, and humorous, borrowing from Existential, Narrative, and Internal Family System’s approaches.

In addition to her clinical and coaching work, Tess is the Treasurer of the Minnesota Association of Marriage and Family, and is currently working towards being an AAMFT Approved Supervisor under the supervision of Dr. Alex Iantaffi, LMFT, and Shawn Neel, LMFT. As a supervisor, Tess specializes in providing clinical support to clinicians who struggle with chronic illness, or are struggling with clients who can’t be “out-smarted.”

Eric Fawcett, M.A., is a postgraduate, pre-licensure Marriage & Family Therapist. Eric specializes in assisting clients to bridge seemingly irreconcilable parts of themselves, and bridge what feel like irreconcilable differences with others. Before pursuing his MFT degree, Fawcett spent three decades as a recording artist, as a creative entrepreneur partnering with major corporations, and as a published writer and speaker addressing the relational joys and challenges of the collaborative process. Fawcett has long believed that the training MFTs receive prepares them to work with people-systems far beyond couples and families. In his private practice, Eric works not only with individuals and families, but also with organizations seeking to increase trust and cohesion among its members. Eric is thrilled to be partnering with Tess Gittleman in the creation of Attunement Architects, a practice committed to improving the relational health of organizations of all kinds, from businesses to spiritual communities to universities.

The last 18 months have challenged some of the most basic assumptions we had about what is necessary for a productive work environment. Gone are the days when we believed we absolutely HAD TO BE IN PERSON to be productive. Among others, one of the big lessons COVID has taught us is that the future of work is flexible.

Today, I'm speaking with April Seifert, Ph.D. in Social Cognitive Psychology and co-Founder of Peak Mind: The Center for Psychological Strength.  We're talking about major insights we've all learned from our hybrid work during COVID as well as some very practical ways we can support our own wellbeing and leaders can support their teams in a hybrid work model.

Charles Trittin, life guide, joins me to discuss how he joins others to create their story, find meaning amidst a noisy world, and discover the divine in ordinary life.

Bio: Charles Trittin (B.A., M.Div.) seeks to better lives and the world.

As a Life Guide he comes alongside and listens to your stories, questions and aspirations. He draws on his personal history of transcending challenges, 20+ years of family and natural systems training, and 25 years as a progressive pastor.

Working with Charles as a client includes:

•Creating your story •Assessing strengths and stressors •Transforming responses •Finding and developing perspectives •Navigating transitions •Separating thinking and feeling •Assisting in decisions •Strengthening relationships, teams and communities •Discovering your myths and metaphors •Promoting healing and wellness •Living authentically •Finding community •Turning your ideals into reality.

Charles is particularly adept at discovering the divine in everyday life, whether it be in lyrics to a song or something found alongside the sidewalk. Self, soul, spirit and relationships provide the cornerstones to his work, as they do life itself.

He jokes that words are his friends. His walls are filled with books and his desk covered in pads of paper and pencils. He loves to share what is on his mind through writings and public speaking. A gifted personal storyteller, Charles uses images, metaphors, and other rhetorical devices to share his thinking while assisting those who work with him in making discoveries.

Working and playing are the same for him. A wonderful meal of saltimbocca (Italian, “dancing on the tongue”) connects to what else is currently dancing in his life. A comedy special on Netflix speaks as well to the pain beneath all humor. Cheering for the Twins and Vikings are ways to be on the side of the underdog as well as the ever hopeful. U2 singing in the rain at TCF Bank Stadium on a hot July night celebrates joyous transcendence. The lengthy hospitalization and recovery of his wife forces him to shut out trivialities, focus only on what matters, and laugh and cry with his children amidst the absurdity.

He is profiled in the October 2020 Psychology Today article on resilience, “Designed for Success”.

Charles resides in Eagan, MN and is married to his wife of over 30 years, Denise. They have two adult children, Karl and Maggie, and a bluetick coonhound, Elvis.

Mike Grinberg and Gaby Israel Grinberg join me to share their journey to starting Proofpoint Marketing and give us a glimpse into what it looks like to be in business with your spouse.

Mike Grinberg Bio: Mike cut his teeth professionally in paid media, SEO and analytics and has agency, in-house and start-up experience, working on e-commerce, B2B and CPG brands. Mike, a graduate of the University of Minnesota, double-majored in business and graphic design and always thought he’d be a designer. After various internships, it was clear he was better suited for a career in digital marketing over design.

From a very early point in his career, Mike always knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur and strike out on his own. Though he never thought it would be with his wife, and he never imagined it would be as head of an agency. In fact, those were two things he said he did NOT want to do. But life has a funny way of pushing you toward the right path, one way or another.

As the fearless leader of Proofpoint Marketing, Mike is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the business, as well as new business development and overseeing the Performance Media Team.

When not working, Mike enjoys working out, listening to podcasts, running with his German Shepherd Samson, and being a Dad to Lana Rose. He is also a self-professed adrenaline junky and counts skydiving and scuba diving as some of his favorite experiences in life, so far. Hiking and anything outdoors is a close second.

Gaby Israel Grinberg Bio: Gaby started her career in her beloved Boston, after graduating from Boston University with a degree in communication. She honed her marketing and creative skills at a multi-cultural advertising agency in the client services side of the business. She delved into digital very early in her career and never looked back (though she does have a sentimental place in her heart for anything printed). Her love of writing led her down a path of content development and ultimately to social media marketing. After moving to Minneapolis in 2010, she continued honing her digital chops and worked in various agencies and in-house teams, including Sleep Number and Target.

As Vice President and Co-Founder, Gaby heads up the Client Services and Performance Content teams, and also supports New Business Development and marketing for the agency. She is the unofficial CMO and CCO (Chief Culture Officer) of Proofpoint. She is also officially and affectionately known as the “Breaker of Bottlenecks.”

While not at work, Gaby enjoys working out, creating photo books, consuming anything related to design and home decor, gardening, spending time with friends and family, and adores being a mom to Lana Rose. In her spare time, she also volunteers with the March of Dimes and is active in the prematurity community in the Twin Cities. One day, she plans to pen a children’s book inspired by the family’s journey with prematurity.

Michael Helmke, The Digital Concierge, joins me to discuss marketing and acquiring new clients in a COVID-19 business landscape.

Michael's Bio: After decades writing software and managing development teams, it was time for a change and Michael entered the wild world of marketing.

Turns out, marketing is great fun.  Especially marketing copywriting where you have permission to break language rules, tell stories, and turn words into money like magic.

This biggest challenge facing business owners, Michael observes, is appearing as genuine online as they do when they are successfully getting clients "the old fashioned way".

Solving this challenge, Michael brings to bear years of experience with business strategy, digital expertise, and a strong drive to keep things as simple as possible.

Michael's current focus is helping business owners with existing success getting clients through "normal" means and helping them successfully reach more clients online.   He also writes a thrice weekly email newsletter on marketing and business growth topics at TheDigitalConcierge.net

Charlie Engle and Sean Nielsen join me to discuss their company, ShareBoost Marketing, and how they are revolutionizing fundraising in youth sports while fostering community interaction.

ShareBoost Marketing is the mobile app developer and subsidiary of the Minneapolis/NYC-based Direct-to-Consumer & eCommerce startup partner, The People Centric. The People Centric is a direct to consumer & ecommerce incubator & accelerator with a family of brands designed to promote active & healthy lifestyles. Their brands produce innovative physical products paired with forward thinking digital experiences

Charlie's Bio: Charlie Engle is a global ultra-‐endurance athlete and the founder of the 5.8 Global Adventure Series, one of the most ambitious expeditions in modern history, trekking from the lowest to the highest points on all seven continents. He is also one of the most accomplished ultramarathon runners in the world, having placed in hundreds of races in dozens of countries.

His incredible athletic ability was profiled in the film, Running the Sahara, narrated by Matt Damon. The documentary highlighted his historic, record-‐setting journey with his two teammates across the world’s largest desert, running more than two marathons a day for 111 consecutive days, for a total of 4,500 miles. Charlie’s transcontinental run through deep sand and politically unstable countries remains one of the premier accomplishments in the ultra-‐endurance and adventure sports worlds. After crossing the Sahara and seeing the global water crisis first-‐hand, Charlie raised more than $6 million for clean water projects in
Africa and helped establish an organization called H20Africa, now known as Water.org, one of the largest water nonprofit in the world.

Charlie’s memoir, Running Man, became a bestseller shortly after it was published in 2016. While the book details his inspiring life story, it is about more than just running. It is about facing demons, overcoming impossible odds, keeping your sense of humor and discovering the redemptive power of putting one foot in front of the other, even when you feel like you can’t keep going.

His motivation to run and tackle extreme adventures stems from his battle with addiction to drugs and alcohol. Charlie has been in recovery since July 23, 1992, and he credits a large part of his recovery to the purposeful devotion and emotional release he experiences while running. He has said that “Drugs and alcohol were my way out. Running was my way through.”

Charlie is a dynamic speaker who has enthralled audiences around the world, from keynotes at the Boston Marathon and Google to the National Geographic Society, the United Nations and the deck of a nuclear-‐class U.S. Naval aircraft carrier.

He’s been featured in the New York Times, National Geographic Weekend, Outside, Runner’s World, NPR’s All Things Considered, Men’s Journal, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He lives with his wife, Astacianna Hatcher, in Durham, North Carolina.

Sean's Bio: Sean is tech entrepreneur specializing in mobile app development.

Jenny Landon joins me to discuss her mission to help others grow from the most difficult times in their lives.

Jenny's Bio: Jenny Landon uses the lessons she’s learned from the most difficult times of her life to create an experience for her audience that goes well beyond simply sharing a story. She connects with her audience through her own transparency and sense of vulnerability to help them develop a better understanding for mental health and how to support it. Jenny’s need for understanding mental health began in 1999 after she lost her father to suicide. Determined to understand his death, she focused the remainder of her undergraduate studies on depression and how to heal after experiencing such a loss.

Jenny graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in psychology and went on to be a trained crisis counselor and public educator on suicide prevention. Still, she credits her life experiences as being the best teacher in helping her better understand mental health. In addition to losing her dad, Jenny became suicidal as a result of missing the signs that she was experiencing postpartum depression. In recent years, Jenny’s attention has been on understanding the mental health of her adolescent daughter and helping her to live a life she loves after nearly losing her to suicide.

Shining a light on the importance of addressing how we are speaking about mental health is a critical element to Jenny’s message on how we can save more lives. She firmly believes it requires a shift in perspective to develop a true understanding of mental health and that this shift will change the way we speak, think and respond to those experiencing mental health struggles. Through her talk along with the materials she provides, Jenny is determined to not only save lives, but also improve the lives we’re living.

Margaret Ricci and I discuss how harnessing strengths creates more effective teams and leaders.

Margaret's Bio: *I understand and turn around under-performing leadership teams. I also help put together your best teams, starting at the executive level and beyond. When the right leaders are in the right seats, each using their innate talents and harnessing their team’s talents, the company succeeds on all metrics.

As the first triple-qualified Gallup Coach, the first Gallup Builder Profile 10 (BP10) Coach in the 4-State Area, and one of only 300 BP10 Coaches worldwide, I help leadership teams excel. Qualified as a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, Gallup Q12 Employee Engagement Champion and Gallup BP10 Coach, I use insights from Gallup’s suite of powerful tools and my own business experience as a C-Suite and middle management executive to help leaders create successful companies with engaged employees.

I initially discovered my passion for teaching, coaching and consulting through Gallup’s CliftonStrengths and other assessments in the midst of an industry-event layoff. I’d been in the architectural and engineering industry as a Contracts Administrator, responsible for creating, negotiating and administering contracts for projects from $5,000 to $1.6B for over 30 years and was the COO of an international toy company. What was I really wired to do? During my discovery process, I found that my passion lay in creating super-powered teams by teaching them to use the unique, innate abilities within each member and harnessing these abilities toward greater success, but also in getting the dysfunction out of these teams.*

*Now with Gallup’s BP10 assessment and Lencioni’s Overcoming The Five Dysfunctions of a Team in my toolkit, my current coaching focus is helping leadership teams work together more effectively to power their companies toward success and create strong cultures with employee engagement. So many employees suffer under leaders who are also miserable because they are in the wrong leadership seats. When leadership teams are well-aligned within their strengths, the organization thrives, the culture is positive and employees are engaged. Strengths-based organizations have been proven to build high-performing cultures, excelling beyond normal business outcomes.

I was also selected to establish the Twin Cities Chapter of the COO Forum. The COO Forum was an important source of peer support when I was a COO of an international toy company, I am delighted to head the new Chapter in Minneapolis / St. Paul.*

Greg Bancroft is a writer and speaker with a passion for baseball—and helping others overcome shame. He has spent a lifetime writing, speaking, teaching in roles as diverse as an Episcopal priest, pastoral counselor, adjunct professor, Navy Chaplain, corporate trainer, community engagement leader, as well as in sales and marketing positions within Fortune 500 companies.

In a world where so many people are carrying the weight of shame, Greg brings desperately needed affirmation and encouragement. Be inspired to trade your negative self-talk for the motivation to show up and claim the success you've always wanted for your life.

“You can stay stuck, you can choose to be a victim or you can swing. You can decide ‘I'm going to get into the game of life and I'm going to swing and the easiest thing to do is to just show up’.”- Greg Bancroft

Key Takeaways:

“And you know, getting that one extra hit doesn’t sound like a lot, but it doesn't take much to move from 250 or 300, so, progress, not perfection. And I think people resonate with those kinds of messages and they realize that you know what, I do seem to have a lot more failures than I do have successes. I'm not perfect and I do matter. I'm more important than something or an object. I really do matter.” - Greg Bancroft

“And so relationships are the same way. Families are the same way. You've got to show up, you gotta be there and it's not about you, it's about us. And you gotta do your part. You gotta dig in, you gotta swing and that sucks less. We're not going to be perfect, but we'll get better when we practice.” - Greg Bancroft

In this episode I am joined by Betsy and Tyler Koepke.

Betsy is the founder of Besty Koepke Coaching and her husband Tyler is the co-facilitator at The Couples Connection Retreat they lead together.

Since age 5, Betsy has been on a soul-searching mission trying to conquer her demons and live her own truth. That journey has led her to the study of psychology, anthropology, astronomy, world religions, mythology, education, and philosophy. The road that she has traveled has included living in the woods of Virginia, hiking the Appalachian Trail, living and traveling up and down the west coast of the United States, studying in London, and trekking through Southeast Asia.

Her study and practice of mindfulness, meditation, and yoga have led her to understand that we are living in an east meets west world where thousands of years of practice as well as current day scientific research all point to one common understanding…that the human mind and psyche are the underlying forces behind who we are, how we feel, and how we behave.

Betsy, Tyler, and I discuss Betsy’s coaching practice, their heart for helping other couples thrive in their relationships, the struggles they encounter in their own relationship, and their advice for building a strong connection with your spouse or partner. Enjoy!

Duke Pieper was 15 years old when he was told that he had a 5% chance to live. It seemed that all the odds were stacked up against him. Except one, his determination. Through that determination and what is deemed as a medical miracle, he was able to survive multiple surgeries. Duke’s case is very rare. According to the Brain Aneurism Foundation, there are nearly 500,000 deaths worldwide each year caused by brain aneurysms and half the victims are younger than 50.

Brain cancer, brain tumor, inoperable– -all words that make you only think of something negative, but Duke has turned those words into a positive. He has never given up. He hasn’t given up fighting and he never gave up on his passion for his education or his love for hockey. Pieper was a student at Hill-Murray High School as a varsity defenseman when he realized something was wrong before his first game. That is when he found out that he had a brain bleed and his whole life would change from that day forward.

Duke has recently published a book, I’m Alive. All of the proceeds from his book go directly to his foundation, which empowers people to move forward with hope and courage in the face of adversity associated with life’s challenges.

Duke is an incredibly inspiring person an I truly enjoyed the opportunity to interview him. I believe anyone that is lucky enough to spend a few minutes with Duke will have a more positive outlook on life. I hope you enjoy this interview featuring Duke Pieper.

Colin Longren is a partner and the Vice President of Global sales at the Millau Group.

Colin’s “ah-ha” moment in sales came when he was challenged to bring on the next “Key Account” at a private company. He began searching LinkedIn for the all the contacts he would pursue, collected sales materials to use, and researched current customers he serviced in the same industry.

The following week his Monday sales meeting began and he was immediately asked was: “Colin, how many phone calls did you make last week?” At that point he realized, “…our team has no sales process, nobody can coach me to my pursuits, and we’re focusing on the wrong things. Once Dave Varner, the founder of the Millau Group, introduced Colin to the Millau Group, it clicked instantly.

Now, Colin helps B2B sales teams implement a process, coach to it, and change the way they’ll look at sales forever. As part of his role at the Millau Group, Colin speaks, coaches, and influences other salespeople.

The Millau Group is in the vertical of “Sales Training,” but fundamentally fixing the fatal flaw: why organizations spend money on training without seeing the desired results. The fatal flaw is the lack of process. Here’s proof: “If you passed out a case study of an important opportunity to your individual salespeople and asked them for the next best steps to move it forward, how many different answers would you get?” If it’s more than one answer, you prove Colin’s point.

Colin and I discuss his journey in sales, the common problems he sees on sales teams, and the habits he employs in his life to bolster his own well-being and performance in his career. I hope you enjoy this podcast featuring Colin Longren!

Cathy’s vision is to connect precision medicine, life style behaviors, and technology to improve outcomes for cancer patients.

The Thrivors™ platform addresses secondary side effects of cancer treatment where they impact patients the most and where they can go unrecognized - beyond the clinical setting to improve adherence, outcomes, and healing.

Common complications during and following cancer treatment include pain, fatigue, lymphedema, neuropathy, osteoporosis, and psycho-social distress. These side effects, or social determinants of health, can dramatically diminish a patient’s quality of life.

There is an opportunity to combine the clinical power of genomics with the power of patient engagement via the Thrivors™ digital health platform to enrich precision medicine to include social determinants of health and quality of life indicators.

Cathy and I discuss the impact THIRVORS is making on cancer patients, her entrepreneurial journey, and how she maintains her own personal wellness when she continues to give so much to others.
