Dr. Richard Nahas practices integrative pain management in Ottawa, using drugs, injections, natural health products, acupuncture, manual therapy, mind-body techniques, nutrition and exercise.
After graduating from the University of Toronto’s faculty of medicine, he worked as an ER physician until 2004. His work during the SARS epidemic made him aware of what medicine is missing, and this led to a sabbatical to study traditional medicine while backpacking around the world. He has published textbook chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles and national treatment guidelines has participated in international clinical trials and has been an invited speaker at integrative medicine conferences worldwide.
Dr. Nahas considers blockages to be the most important missing link in modern medicine. These lesions, which can persist after any injury or trauma, are linked to changes in fascia and the nervous system that create tension, inflammation and stress. He has developed the Seekers Method as a simple self-care and therapy technique, using movement and breath, touch and awareness. Pilot testing has revealed it to be teachable, safe and effective, and his goal is to make treating blockages a part of routine clinical care. He is developing mobile data tools to validate his method, and the BEAM project aims to Bring Evidence to Alternative Medicine by measuring outcomes in people seeking healing outside of guideline-based care.

Dr. Rob Vanbergen is ushering in a new generation of possibilities for the future of Pain Free for Life while continuing his parents’ mission of ridding the world of unnecessary pain and suffering without the use of drugs, painful injections, invasive surgeries, or long recovery periods. After personally experiencing the healing properties of The Hache Protocol™, Dr. Rob joined Dr. John and Dr. Lorry Hache at Pacific Health Options. In addition to his knowledge and certification in Microcurrent Therapy, Rob became a Certified HHP (Holistic Healthcare Practitioner) with training in Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, Hypnotherapy, Homeopathy, Aromatherapy, Auriculotherapy, and Counselling. Dr. Rob obtained his Bachelors in Holistic Health Sciences from Quantum University in Hawaii in 2019. In 2021, he went on to receive his Doctorate of Natural Medicine and a Ph.D. in Natural Medicine with a groundbreaking dissertation that focused on the benefits of non-invasive microcurrent Vagus nerve stimulation for the resolution of inflammation in the body. If anyone could be the poster child for the effectiveness of natural pain resolution and microcurrent therapy, it would be Dr. Rob. As a child, he suffered from both debilitating anxiety and extensive scoliosis issues. Neither holistic nor conventional medical remedies brought lasting relief. But when Dr. Rob applied the Hache Protocol for Pain Resolution™, his issues were resolved. He now enjoys vibrant and lasting physical and mental health. Dr. Rob has also found the Protocol to be invaluable in parenting his autistic son, James. He has found that James readily accepts the gentle procedures introduced by these therapies, which help bring on a state of relaxed calm that eases the stresses of everyday life. Dr. Rob also used it when an incident in James’ life resulted in a broken foot. After just two weeks of microcurrent therapy, his foot had healed completely. Doctors agreed that it was a near-miraculous recovery. As a Doctor of Natural Medicine and a veteran instructor on the use of the Hache Protocol for Pain Resolution, ™ Dr. Rob has devoted his professional life to educating people about the effectiveness of natural pain management methods in relieving pain and anxiety and initiating healing in the body. His goal is to continually strive to create a world where 1.5 billion people no longer have to suffer from the limitations of chronic pain and illness once and for all.

Dr. Nicholas Nelson graduated from his Doctorate program with the academic distinction of Magna Cum Laude, as well as receiving Clinical Honours on two separate occasions.Throughout his life, Dr. Nelson always embodied an attitude of thinking outside the box and following his own path. He continued this pattern during and after attending university and starting his own practice by sampling literature from as many of the hard Sciences, such as quantum theory, string theory, holographic theory, and epigenetics, while simultaneously studying as many traditional theological philosophical texts as possible in an effort to round out his studies and draw knowledge from every level of thinking he could. Through this cultivated lens, Dr. Nelson considers the human body from many different levels and understands the uniqueness and complexity of every individual person.
Dr. Nelson owns Element Chiropractic in Edmonton Alberta, which in their first 2 years of operation has become the highest-rated Chiropractic clinic in the area on Google. Dr. Nelson has also been featured in a book titled "Keep Moving: Creating Life After Loss" by local author Holly Rose Holland, and his Youtube channel has received close to half a million views, with his most-watched video featuring local UFC fighter Tanner Boser.

Matt Parks is an entrepreneur and an expert in the medical supply industry where he has spent the last ten years dealing directly with end-users of consumer products. In 2020 Matt founded One Less CBD in response to the underwhelming offering of quality CBD topical products. The topical inflammation cream has helped many decrease their reliance on over-the-counter NSAID’s and helped them create a healthier approach to daily inflammation relief. Matt self-funded his company with the hopes of creating a customer-focused, results-oriented company that puts its customers first.
Matt has been featured in Authority Magazine and has been asked to speak at the Peterson Foundation for Parkinson's and at the VGM Heartland Conference in Waterloo, IA.

Sam Visnic has spent his life studying the fundamental aspects of human health with a focus on movement and clinical massage therapy. In a world of specialists, surgical procedures, drugs and quick-fix remedies, he’s committed to finding and developing strategies that help people stuck at the “gap”.
Sam has studied dozens of systems and methodologies for uncovering the root cause of aches and pains, along with postural and movement issues. Pain science, the art and science of hands-on soft tissue massage techniques, myofascial release, and coaching movement are essential in his practice.
Integrating different methods but above all deciphering WHEN to use different techniques with different people and situations, along with the integration of movements that people want to be able to do again is the key to long-term success with Sam’s incredible track record with his personal clients. Understanding the various elements that contribute to conditions and the power of communication and education makes his Release Muscle Therapy program unique from other hands-on therapy approaches.

Dr. Bertrand's interest is relieving pain. To provide pain relief she uses prolotherapy. She has published a paper on using prolotherapy for shoulder pain (PM&R 2016 January 2016). She also uses perineural injections and has invented a cream for topical pain treatment. A randomized controlled study has proven the effectiveness of this cream for pain relief (PM&R November 7, 2015). She has completed a pilot study on using this cream for postherpetic neuralgia: 16 of the 20 people suffering from pain following a bout of shingles, on average five years previously, found relief from this cream. She is conducting a randomized placebo-controlled study using it for painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The study is underway with, currently, 81 of the 90 participants needed. As she has started selling her cream, the principal investigator is Dr. François Louw from Kelowna. The cream provides on average 53% pain relief (narcotics, 36%, anti-inflammatories, 23%, Tylenol 13%). To find out more about the cream, called QR cream, go to www.qrcream.com. She has developed a new way to examine and treat low back pain which provides 78% of those examined with pain relief using a two-minute exercise, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXNS6PNKRPo. She is about to start a randomized controlled study to assess the long-term effectiveness of this technique.

Dr. David A. Hanscom is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in the surgical correction of complex problems in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. A significant part of his practice was devoted to performing surgery on patients who had undergone multiple prior spine surgeries. Around 2001 he began to share his own stress management tool with his patients that were in pain but had no indications of surgery. He had spent much of his career with rehabilitation physicians learning non-operative care. Nowadays, he is focusing his efforts on bringing effective medical treatments for chronic mental and physical pain back into mainstream medicine. His last practice position was Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, Swedish Neuroscience Specialists, Swedish Medical Center, Seattle, WA (retired in December 2018).
One needs to know the history of the patient to treat chronic pain. Doctors should treat the cause, not just the symptoms. - Dr. John Hsu
Dr. Hsu practiced medicine for 28 years as a physician in anesthesia and chronic pain management. In that time, he has learned to think like an addict to ensure a successful therapeutic outcome. After years of standing by to watch the opioid crisis develop into an opioid epidemic, he has now used his intimate knowledge of addiction to develop a solution to securely store, actively control dispensing, and safely dispose of unused opioids. This common sense approach will enforce prescription adherence, prevent diversion, monitor patients for respiratory depression and autonomously call emergency services if respiratory distress is detected. His drive to improve healthcare is based on passion, compassion and hope. Dr. Hsu’s business experience comes from founding 2 companies. Naomi solutions, a software company that produced scalable practice management software integrated with revenue cycle management software (RCM) and Picture Archiving Collection Software (PACS) for physician offices. The other company was Quivivepharma, a drug development company, that formulated a generic opioid and respiratory stimulant combination pill to enhance opioid safety in treating pain. He has 5 USPTO granted patents and has 20 pending patent applications.

Main interest is relieving pain. To provide pain relief she uses prolotherapy. She has published a paper on using prolotherapy for shoulder pain (PM&R 2016 January 2016). She also uses perineural injections and has invented a cream for topical pain treatment. A randomized controlled study has proven the effectiveness of this cream for pain relief (PM&R November 7 2015). She has completed a pilot study on using this cream for postherpetic neuralgia: 16 of the 20 people suffering from pain following a bout the shingles, on average five years previously, found relief from this cream. She is conducting a randomized placebo-controlled study using it for painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The study is underway with, currently, 81 of the 90 participants needed. As she has started selling the cream, the principal investigator is Dr. François Louw from Kelowna. The cream provides on average 53% pain relief (narcotics, 36%, anti-inflammatories, 23%, Tylenol 13%). To find out more about the cream, called QR cream, go to www.qrcream.com. She has developed a new way to examine for and treat low back pain which provides 78% of those examined with pain relief using a two-minute exercise, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXNS6PNKRPo. She is about to start a randomized controlled study to assess the long-term effectiveness of this technique.
Not constantly pondering about your emotional pain can help you lessen your chronic pain. Learn more with Dr. Matt.
Dr. Matt grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago graduating from Wheaton North High School in 1993. He grew up playing football, basketball, but excelled at baseball.
Matt attended University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana graduating in 1997.
While at the U of I he suffered some severe and painful injuries to his knees that led him on a journey to find healing through Chiropractic as the traditional approaches failed. Always wanting to be in the healthcare field he decided that because chiropractic changed his life, he would become a chiropractor.
Dr. Milonas graduated from National College of Chiropractic in 2001, and has been practicing with his wife Dr. Jessica Thompson, in Naperville IL ever since.
In 2015 Dr. Matt suffered a horrific sequestered L5-S1 disc injury that changed the course of his life and practice forever.
But through that challenge and healing from the pain associated with the disc injury, and able to do that without surgical intervention, he has created an extremely successful and novel approach to handling acute and chronic pain using chiropractic care and other holistic solutions to pain.
The family practice focuses on the restoration of neuro-spinal function through precise and scientific chiropractic adjustments, spinal rehabilitation, as well as a novel way of handling pain at home for his patients and those he coaches around the world, he calls Pain Sucks.
Dr. Matt enjoys golf, baseball, auto racing, doing CrossFit and watching his girls rise at equestrian sports!
He has spoken around the nation to businesses, schools, sports teams and the national PTA and more.
William Pawluk, MD, MSc is a holistic doctor near Baltimore, MD. Previous academic positions at Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland. Training: acupuncture, homeopathy, hypnosis, energy medicine, nutrition and bodywork. Considered the foremost authority on the use of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy in North America. Interested in holistic pain management, sleep, anxiety, anti-aging and general health.
He is interested in new solutions to stubborn, chronic and frustrating health problems. He wants to try to resolve the cause of the problem and not to simply put a Band-Aid on it. For example, most conventional treatments for pain rely on “numbing and dumbing,” that simply make the perception of pain better but don’t heal the cause. When on the Dr. Oz show, they both agreed that pain management should be focused on healing the cause. After 25 years of seeing the risks and side effects of traditional approaches, and studying various healing approaches, he discovered that PEMFs provide the most benefit and allowed safe, non-toxic, self-directed, self-controlled, at-home pain management.
To this end, he has worked with magnetic field therapies for 30 years and established an authoritative website www.DrPawluk.com. He is author of a comprehensive book on healing with magnetic fields called “Power Tools for Health.” This book describes what magnetic fields are, over 25 actions of magnetic fields in the body, how they work for over 50 health conditions, how to get a PEMF device for yourself and how to use it. This book is supported by over 500 scientific references and is the most authoritative, yet readable, book on the topic available to date. To help promote this healing concept, he has well over 50 radio, podcast, magazine and TV interviews combined. He has also been a cohost of a 2 hour holistic health radio show in Baltimore for 10 years. Most recently he hosted the Pain Solution Summit interviewing more than 30 experts on helping people with chronic pain.

"The best lessons I have learned is that the intensity of my pain depends on me, my thoughts, and my actions. The other important lesson is that I can turn down the intensity of my pain with calm, quiet breaths and muscle relaxation." - Heather Divine
Heather Divine graduated from the Misericordia School of Nursing in Edmonton, Alberta in 1974 and worked as an operating room nurse until May 31, 1991, when persistent pain forced her from the workforce.
Very soon after that, I met with another person who had lived with pain for over 25 years and she was fasting with the intent to die. My pain doctor asked me if I would go and talk with her and talk about living with pain. I stopped by her home and began by talking about my own fears and thoughts and how scared I was to face the rest of my life with pain. We talked and laughed and cried for a few hours and at the end of my visit, she changed her mind about wanting to die. I asked her what had made such a difference and she told me “this is the first time since my pain started that somebody understood”. We started a support group together and this was the beginning of new meaning and purpose in my life.
Over the past 30 years, I have continued on this path supporting people, and their families, who lived with persistent pain.
o The website has resources, recorded webinars, presentations, links to other resources and organizations, and of course, links to all the PSMES groups. The website is People in Pain Network https://www.pipain.com/.
As the years went by, I learned, the hard way, how to pace, how to pay attention to my pain, and to understand that my pain is my protector and when I “listen” when it suggests that I change my behaviour and my actions, the “voice” of my pain becomes softer.
When I ignore my pain, it will soon shout as loud as it needs to make me listen. The best lessons I have learned is that the intensity of my pain depends on me, my thoughts, and my actions. The other important lesson is that I can turn down the intensity of my pain with calm, quiet breathes, and muscle relaxation.
I realized a few years ago that if I see my healthcare provider for 20 minutes a month, the remaining 43,180 minutes every month are mine to self-manage. Pain impacts our body, mind, spirit, and environment. Start with the area that means the most to you and keep going.
Our Canadian Adult and Youth Pain Toolkits (free on our website) are good places to start to learn more about self-management skills.
“How you live your life is how you heal. The body knows how to heal. Our job is to learn how to live.” - Dr. Bolliger
For over three decades, Dr. Bolliger, has trained health care practitioners on how to integrate body and mind while addressing pain, trauma and health. Dr. Bolliger’s unique methodology guides people on a path to physical, emotional and spiritual wellness, reminding them of their life’s choices and agency.
People often limit their healing process, whether it’s from arthritis, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis by abdicating their power to their Diagnosis. The path to health means discovering what really needs healing, rewriting the stories that don’t serve us, honouring our body and reclaiming our path back to joy.
Author of “What Patients Don’t Say if Doctors Don’t Ask”, she is currently writing a book based on her LISTEN: The intelligent Healing System called Your Body is Speaking – Are You Listening?
Dr. Bolliger is a Board-Certified Naturopathic Physician since 1992, founder and CEO of Bowen College, host of the Healer’s Café as well as her own TV channel “Pain Relief with BowenFirst™ Therapy ”. Do you want to know what are effective self help techniques that you can apply if you suffer from Chronic Pain? Learn with my friend Chris Bridgeford.
Chris was born and bred in Forres in Moray, Scotland and has lived there all his life. He was educated at Applegrove Primary School and Forres Academy after which he joined Bank of Scotland in 1976 then took early medical retirement in 1995.
In the 1980s he presented monthly and weekly radio shows with local radio station Moray Firth Radio, one show was one of the first Computer Shows in the country where the broadcast home-made computer programs over the airwaves (all those screechy sounds on tape for those old enough to remember). The second weekly show was for three hours on a Saturday evening with music and competitions and the third was a monthly show which featured only obscure album tracks taking it in turn with three other presenters. He was a member of Forres Community Council from 1990 – 2000 serving as Secretary and Chairman of the Planning Committee. He has also been Secretary of Forres In Bloom, Forres Golf Course Board of Management and finally, The Friends of Falconer Museum for twelve years. He formed Affa Sair in 2015 after emerging from a period of depression due to chronic pain.
He was granted Burgess of The Royal Burgh of Forres for his service to the local community. This is an ancient historical award which allows Burgesses to drive their livestock through the High Street etc; Chris is a self-confessed computer nerd with Apple Macs being his preferred system after he got bored with Windows in the early 2000s.
He first experienced chronic pain in 1978 when he was diagnosed with Sacroiliitis, thereafter Ankylosing Spondylitis. He never conformed to the medical books of the day and after much to-ing and fro-ing and disbelief, he was eventually diagnosed in 2004 with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Along with this came Allodynia and Costochondritis, in 1995 Chris had an aortal-femoral bypass on his left leg and angioplasty on his right. He had to have his gallbladder removed through a cholecystectomy and there followed numerous incisional hernia repairs with the one in 2004 where things went badly wrong and he lost 9 units of blood and nearly his life. There followed numerous bouts of depression until 2014 when things got better. During that time he also developed Diabetes now controlled by insulin and tablets. Sadly, 3 TIA’s in two days and possible heart disease joined his other ailments. He always says he’s had an “interesting” life.
With his confidence and vocabulary returned, Chris decided to form an on-line support group for chronic pain sufferers and to try to get pain services restored at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin. So on 14 th April 2015 Affa Sair was born. The initiative was very successful with pain services restored on 3 rd March 2016. This saved chronic pain sufferers having to travel all the way to Aberdeen – a round tip of 140 miles which left sufferers in extra pain for days after the appointment.
Affa Sair now has 481 members, has been mentioned a few times in First Ministers Questions at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and frequently engages with many MSPs from all Political Parties. Just before the Covid-19 pandemic struck Affa Sair had been instrumental in getting £500,000 for NHS Grampian to improve their Pain Services from the Public Health Minister.

EPISODE 7 ft. Cindy Perlin – My book, The Truth About Chronic Pain Treatments: The Best and Worst Strategies for Becoming Pain Free, grew out of my own experience with chronic pain as well as my work as a health care provider working with pain patients.
I became highly motivated to learn about effective chronic pain treatments after I developed severe, disabling back pain when I was 25 years old. The doctors I consulted with were unable to find the cause of my pain, and they prescribed drugs which didn’t help and were potentially dangerous.
After enduring agonizing pain for more than three years, a friend suggested that I read a book about the mind/body connection, which, among other ideas talked about healing through “laughter therapy” and biofeedback. I changed my TV viewing habits–I was watching the holocaust miniseries at the time. Then I consulted a biofeedback therapist who taught me that worrying about pain only made it worse, and that I could use my mind to reduce my pain by learning to relax. After the initial session, I was astonished to find that my pain was already reduced by 50% because I knew that I could have some control over my pain instead of fearing it.
These experiences encouraged me to explore other non-pharmacological approaches to healing pain. My health improved enough that I was able to return to work full-time and also complete my Master’s Degree in Social Work.
Another later experience with chronic foot pain that lasted for 14 years and did not respond to mind/body treatments taught me that pain can have many different causes and that you need to determine the cause in order to find the right treatment.
Along the way, I shared my successes with everyone I knew. I realized my passion was to help people heal. I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and nationally certified biofeedback practitioner. For the last 25 years I have helped my clients improve their emotional and physical well-being through my private practice near Albany, NY. You can learn more about my clinical work at www.peakmindbody.com.
I wrote The Truth About Chronic Pain Treatments: The Best and Worst Strategies for Becoming Pain Free to educate health care providers and patients about how to end the epidemic of chronic pain that is ruining the lives of 100 million Americans and more than a billion people around the world. This book documents how conventional treatments are often the most dangerous and least effective, and how alternative treatments can be used to get to the root of the problem and promote real healing.
Recently, I launched The Alternative Pain Treatment Directory as an additional resource for those struggling with chronic pain. With this website, patients have access to practitioners, products, and information to assist them in managing their pain. Alternative healthcare practitioners can list their services on the directory. Visit the site at paintreatmentdirectory.com to learn more or to list your practice today.
