You’ve heard of KPIs (key performance indicators, well learn about GFIs (group fitness indicators) with Live Well with Michelle.
If you’re an instructor, want to be a one or you’re a participant who wants to understand why when your instructor says, “Four More”, they’re lying lol.
Tune in for reflection, interviews, reviews and more about group fitness as a profession, business and personal means to wellness.
I’m super excited that I picked up a couple of classes with my local university’s employee wellness program. This episode I talk about what those programs typically look like and how you can search out and provide fitness classes to any organization that has employee wellness programs. Check out https://www.uwo.ca/hr/safety/well_being/wellness/living_well to see an example of this type of program.
Another mind-body option for group fitness instructors. I really love this format. If you are interested in learning more about it check out www.Zumba.com/en-US/circl-mobility.
I have been a TRX fan for at least 20+ years. So when I was going through my yoga training journey in 2023 one of the obvious formats I had to look into was TRX yoga. I took the training and have my tier 1 certification now. I would highly recommend it to any group fitness instructor, looking to increase their offerings. Check them out at www.trxtraining.com/products/yfc
Instructors: if you have had experience teaching, pre-choreographed programs, and formats for companies, like Les Mills and MOSSA, you are going to love Power Music’s Group Rx programs. They come included with a subscription, which includes Fitness 32 count produced music for your other fitness classes that you teach. And even for a little bit more you can get royalty free music to use for online classes that you post. I have been using them for over 20 years and I recommend them 100%. They are the number one source of workout music and you can find them at www.powermusic.com. My top picks: RIP a barbell resistance class, and TRANSFORM yoga and sports movement class.
I currently teach MOSSA programs and from a participants point of view, I wanted to review their on-demand program. At $9.99 a month it’s pretty fantastic. If you are looking for really well produced programs and workouts to do at home, these ones will not disappoint. Check them out at www.mossaondemand.net.
A quick rundown from an instructor perspective as to whether or not taking group fitness classes or teaching them at a college or university recreation facility is an option for you. I’m of course going to only speak from my personal and professional experience in the University that I teach at so definitely look into your local one and do some research.
Let’s say this is part one of a series where I discuss different places that you can (a) as an instructor teach at and (b) as a participant find group fitness classes. Inspired by the recent closure of the gym that I was teaching at, this episode talks about my return to the YMCA after 10 years and why I recommend it to instructors and participants alike.
As part of the L.E.A.D. program through The Women in Fitness Association (WIFA), the Enneagram or Personality Test is just the first step in creating your "WHY". The assessment was so spot on, and exactly what I needed to kickstart my journey to self discovery. The results didn't just point out my personality type, it gave extensive details about each character trait and how I can use them to better my understanding of who I truly am. Listen as my L.E.A.D. partner and frequent guest, Coach Megan and I go over our results! If you are interested in taking the test, go to https://www.enneagraminstitute.com. Studying for the AFAA-GFI Exam
Wanted to update my group fitness certification with a different organization and I love the credibility of certifications through NASM - National Academy of Sports Medicine.
This is me rambling my way through the Study Guide to prepare for the exam:).

So I went over my study notes in the last few episodes and here I am talking through some practice quizzes. A lot of quizzes. Complied into one monster episode to listen to during work. What is your preferred method of studying?

Not much to say except I have some really big anxiety about returning to the gym for the first time in almost half a year I wanted to talk about it LOL.
This episode I have my own personal WIFA (The Women in Fitness Association) Meet Up with fellow Canadian fitpro, Toronto-based NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Pre/Post Natal and Group Fitness Instructor, Jane Wareham of Momentum by Jane! She has an awesome origin story and has some great insight into mindset and the benefit of group virtual training. Her Empowered Fitness Results Program is straight fire and she's so cool. I love her and you will too! Whether you're a fitpro or a participant, this episode is for you!
Check her out at: https://www.momentumbyjane.ca/
I got a gift today from the CEO of WIFA and it kickstarted me to make the first of many episodes about this fantastic organization. Probably will be a series 😃! Use my code MICHELLE for $20USD off your annual WIFA Membership.

Behind the Scenes at a brainstorming session for Optimal Balance Holistic Wellness & Fitness new year promotion of one of their core services, Energy Work/Reiki. This is a snippet of a 1.5 hour program/marketing meeting I have with my good friend and colleague, Shelley Weber for her business and brand. Really good stuff for anyone (a) interested in incorporating Reiki into their wellness protocol, (b) who has questioned what Reiki is in the first place and (c) fitness instructors and trainers/coaches that prescribe additional alternative methods for improving ones health and wellbeing. Check them out at www.optimalbalancefitness.com.
Everyone knows about the divine trinity of holistic fitness - mind, body and soul or spirit - but does anyone even do it? And if they do, do they do it right? This was an awesome talk with my friend Megan and a program that she has just recently added Mindful Meditation to the team transformation programming she offers as a group coach and fitness instructor. Next Session starts January 11, 2021 www.megan-fit.com, www.Megan.Fit Email: megan@megan.fit Instagram: @megan.fit Facebook: @ Megan Fit
By definition a resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something. You've made the decision to do something (exercise more) or not do something (eat junk food) but you can't stop there and alot of people do. That’s why they don’t work, at this stage. https://www.livewellwithmichelle.org/post/new-years-resolutions-yay-or-nay Oh and HAPPY NEW YEAR
This is me taking a shot at narrating one of my blog posts - audio book style lol. I totally added stuff to it so if you want the Readers Digest Version, check out the blog - https://www.livewellwithmichelle.org/post/50-things-i-ve-done-in-2020-because-i-turned-50-this-year - but if you want to hear more keep listening. Has your purpose shifted during this Pandemic? What things have you done differently for personal and professional development during this time? I ask you a ton of questions about how you’re doing and share a bit about my thoughts on lockdown. I hope you’re doing well and will get through this together!
A great episode for both instructors and participants! Listen for great business and program tips on location, music, and branding. Also listen for an f-bomb or two because the business of fitness and owning your own studio is not for the faint of heart😅! Super excited for Studio Bianco and what it’s going to do for the dance and fitness community! And I also fan girl Susie so there’s that too😁! Check out Studio Bianco at https://studiobianco.ca and read about her, you’ll totally get why!
Although Lisa is an instructor too, our chat was more directed at how quarantine and shutdown affected her personal workouts and training. She gave some awesome perspective as a participant as to how important social interaction is to getting results and how relationships built before shutdown were critical to the process. It was a short episode but a long chat because I needed to catch up with my girl!
Chatted with my good friend Lola Braimoh of Lola B Fit about how quarantine and shutdown affected her classes, her family and her personal health & wellness. With our collective almost 50 years in the fitness industry, we also talked about what we thought the future of virtual fitness and group fitness classes would look like after this is all said and done. Don't worry, the future looks bright I promise;).
We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated - Maya Angelou All of the changes in the group fitness industry over the last 30 years could definitely be enough to send some people over the edge. If you were a participant and you’ve tried every class and program out there with no results that can really get you down. If you’re a group fitness instructor who has lost wages or jobs or opportunities to the ever changing landscape of the industry that can also get you down. With out going the optimist and pessimist route perhaps looking at things from a victory standpoint is the best way to go. Think of it as winning and learning versus winning and losing. Happy motivational moment everybody!
Whether you think you can or think you can’t; you’re right. ~ Henry Ford. Fitness instructors and participants can totally relate to this famous quote. But things aren’t always as black and white, right? If it was that easy then there wouldn’t be a need for professionals in the industry who have a genuine desire to help others.
I miss talking to this girl regularly at work so this was a great catch up for me and of course fantastic insight for you the listeners when it comes to being a fitness mom! Enjoy and of course HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY EVERYONE!
So you need to read the title in your best Notorious BIG voice. Fun, right? Just like this premiere episode of Season 2 baby BABAY! Join me as I talk to Juan Marin THE ZUMBA KING about ballroom, culture, choreography for dance and the beauty of community in group fitness. During a time when we are all trying to stay connected, this episode was pure joy to do. And clearly if you didn't get it, Juan calls me Mitchella. Been doing it for 10 years. Never stop. xoxo

What better way to end my first season of the podcast with another huge achievement! I’m currently sharing my journey to writing my first book - How to be Fit for Life - on LinkedIn. Would be honoured if you checked out both and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support over the past year. Next season is going to be even better!! Listen, Love, Share 🙏🏾💜www.livewellwithmichelle.org/read-the-book http://linkedin.com/in/michelle-moses-cathcart-87a0a834
Could go on for hours thanking everyone for their support for my brand and this podcast but I want to keep you as listeners so I won’t 😆! So this a short but sweet few minutes of my gratitude and a teaser for the next episode🙌🏾!
Albert Einstein’s Quote - “Creativity is Intelligence having FUN!” - has got me circling back to the age old group fitness debate of freestyle or per-choreographed classes. Which one motivates you?
Notice I didn't say "Practice makes Perfect"? Because it's not about being perfect but about being happy. Like when you get older and have been teaching for a long time and your body and soul are begging for an opportunity for mindful active rest. Yeah I'm talking about me .... I'm older and I need a break but I love being active so what to do? Well I've been adding Yoga into my personal fitness plan and now I want to add it to my brand but I don't even know where to start! Thank you, Tracy of Drop Yoga for quickly coming on the podcast to give some solid tips and recommendations for anyone interested in adding Yoga to their lives - personally and professionally. And learning that she is good friends with a #fitinspo of mine (Carole Woodstock) and they have a show on Rogers TV made this episode even BETTER!! https://twitter.com/Ottawaathomemag/status/1249712373662978049?s=20 https://www.instagram.com/dropyoga/
When I had my surgery on my knee never in 1 million years did I think to ask for occupational therapy to go along with physio. The irony was that my job at the time was 95% physical and in group fitness but I didn’t consider it my “occupation”. Wondering “what if?”🤔. What if I had been given exercises to help me get back to performing my job as a fitness instructor in addition to mobility rehab? What if I had told my therapist that I was worried about being able to perform and teach my classes at the same level as I had before I was injured? And now I wonder how many fitness are in the same boat now? So instead of wondering I sat down with my fitness instructor friend and occupational therapist Jennifer to talk about all of this and to learn more about OT from a group fitness instructor perspective. Great episode to pair with the one I did with Rhonda and her shoulder injury and massage therapy and FMT with Rui at Stretch Health Canada.
Diana, Communications Expert and long time Group fitness instructor and I talk in what will definitely be a regular series about best practices for leading classes. Today we talked about pre-recorded, livestream and live classes.
For years, group fitness and personal training have been silos of the industry and neither the two were to meet ... at least on purpose. Flash forward and now it's more than common and in most cases a necessary evil to dabble in both to have success; but what if you decide to go all in on one fitness offering over the other? What if you move from group fitness and go strictly to personal training? Lisle, owner of Phoenix Rising Personal Training has some great insight into this having moved on from an extremely successful group fitness career to his own training studio. A look into the mind of a passionate fitness professional whose genuine desire to help people can not be denied. And don't worry, he acknowledges that group fitness and instructors are the greatest thing out there so I've decided to keep being friends with him but it was a little dicey there for a minute haha https://phoenixrisingpt.com/
When your international #fitinspos have their own fangirl and wardrobe malfunction moments during class you know everything is gonna be alright! Lyndsey and Ricky from the UK on the podcast is like chocolate spread on biscuits ... follow them on social media and you'll know what I mean lol.
You could look at this episode in a glass half full half empty kind of away.
Right now we’re not able to travel so that could make you sad.
But knowing that this will pass and you will be able to travel aka Get Out of the House, that could make you happy!
I say do the latter and live vicariously now through this chat I had with Barb of Yoga with Barb! She has travelled to some of the most beautiful places to teach fitness and wants you to know that you can too!
Great information on the process and top tips on how to get the best experience teaching abroad that you can.
Crack out your atlas, instructors and let’s get to travelling!!
RESORTS https://www.fitbodiesinc.com/ http://www.nrg2go.net/ RETREATS www.alpenboxx.com www.wassermannretreats.com
Some people live by the “body is a temple” analogy and that it should be worshiped and adorned. I feel that. Others think the “body is a machine” and it needs to be fueled. I definitely feel that. Is it possible both are right? A little 🇨🇦 content inspiration today from the one and only Alanis Morissette - “I see my body as an instrument rather than an ornament.” Okay I’m off to eat a salad and put on a cute shirt lol😅
Jarvis and Kerrianne met at the gym, he proposed at the gym, if there wasn't a class going on in the studio they probably would've gotten married at the gym too LOL. Love these two!
What happens when you call your partner, who has been teaching way longer than you have, your "lovely" assistant? Oh yeah, he did THAT lol. Not grounds for divorce but 30 participants giving you the stink eye will do wonders for the next time, right Em? Bahahahaha
Even after 30 years I still struggle sometimes with the perfect balance of personality and necessary information to start some of my fitness classes; and now it's even harder with virtual online and livestreaming workouts! Every time I step up to the camera these days I feel like I'm more on stage than I was at the gym! So I called up my baby sister, Monique, to check-in and ask her for some help for my pre-class performance. Monique is a a Canadian born, Brooklyn based, actor, improvisor, writer, comedian, producer, director, teacher etc. etc. etc. Clearly she got her work ethic from me ... and our mother but I digress. The point is my baby sister is better than your baby sister, so you should listen to this episode about scripting for performance because it is great. And End ... SCENE. http://www.moniquemoses.com
What do you get when you mix padded bras with a music malfunction? You'll just have to listen to find out LOL. Oh man do I love these two - serious sister goals. Marking this episode clean although I may have dropped an "S" bomb hahahaha
Optimal recovery depends on the right combination of expert care, physical therapy and probably the most important factor, the patient’s determination to get better. I talk to my good friend Rhonda, a fitness professional of almost 30 years (like me!) about her recent shoulder surgery and get some really good insight into not only the physical but mental and emotional prehab and rehab necessary to come back stronger than ever! If you've ever had an operation that has required weeks/months to recover from, you will relate to this episode.
It’s time to get some deeper insights from my expert guest for this episode; pun totally intended;). Stretch Health Canada's, Rui Saraiva, FST, RMT talks about moving better and achieving optimal strength through flexibility restoration. Translated Instructors: Basic maintenance on your body is necessary to enjoy and appreciate the perfect life that you want to live. Rui also drops some gems about certification and opportunities to expand your group fitness platform with Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST). This episode is good for you physically and for your business/brand growth. Oh and we talk about foam rollers, bands, and lacrosse balls too. Ouch but oh so good! Check out Stretch Health Canada at https://stretchhealth.ca/ and certification courses at https://stretchtowin.com/ and https://us.humankinetics.com/products/stretch-to-win-online-ce-course-2nd-edition.
Ok you need to get your pen and paper ready to take ALL the notes because this episode is full of information about the evolution of the fitness industry and how to be successful right now from a fitness manager turned entrepreneur, Cheryl of Evolution Fitness & Wellness Solutions (http://www.evolutionfit.ca/). Everything from thinking outside of the box, finding your niche, being your authentic self and predictions post-Covid-19 were covered in order to get you thinking about your "why", your reason for being in the fitness business in the first place. Spoiler Alert: Adaptability is the answer. It's ALWAYS the answer. This woman was my mentor and the reason I am who I am today when it comes to fitness - praise her or blame her (lol) - but whatever you do, listen to this episode!
You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream ~ C.S. Lewis oh yeah this quote really spoke to me as I head into my 50th year on this earth LOL. But I really do feel like 50 is the new 30 and I feel great because I’m doing what I love and I hope and wish that for others.
Don't even get me started LOL. Just listen and learn from Cheryl of Positive Image Fitness about the often challenging but always rewarding world of owning your own fitness business. Instructors: It's not for the faint of heart. Participants: The work involved on a daily basis to providing quality programming is staggering. Bottom line: Gratitude, drive and taking leaps of faith on everyone's part goes along way in staying alive in a competitive industry. Oh and it's probably 10x harder in small communities and rural areas. Oh and COVID-Mother Effing - 19 too This episode has a lot of great business tips and some stories from a collective 50 years in the fitness industry.. You're welcome;).
I get to chat and catch up with my good friend Lisa (Illuminate Your Soul) and you get a ton of information on how to self-care from a fitness professional perspective. It's a win-win if you ask me:) Hope you enjoy! Check out Lisa's site for Illuminate Your Soul https://lisasouthall4.wixsite.com/website
Ok so the episode title is total clickbait because everyone knows that whatever activity you choose where you're consistent and that you enjoy will get you results! But whatever gets you to listen;) This is a great episode. Kristen of Soul Runners and I talk about all things running but more importantly I attempt to get into her Spring Program by bartering with my Group Fitness Skills. Hey I'm always on my hustle, man! Check out Soul Runners at https://www.soulrunners.club/.
Are you providing live stream classes during this time and if you are, how are you doing? It’s definitely different but currently the new normal for now. Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments and will see you in class! Well at a safe and socially acceptable distance of course LOL
This episode’s quote: “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt 💜
This is my review of the Collab London Fall 2019 Event where I was the keynote speaker. Spoiler Alert🚨 - It was GREAT! I highly recommend fitness professionals look to networking events as well as any group fitness participants who may be listening to ask your favourite instructor to come out to an event you or your company may be hosting. Sharing is caring!
This episode I share how I prepare for non-fitness speaking engagements ... yeah, it's exactly how I prep for fitness classes lol!
This is not surprising at all but I thought it would make a good episode.
Check it out and listen for the 3 things I do to prepare for fitness classes AND non-fitness events.
Then comment on what you do to prepare for either or both. Would love to hear your tips and tricks.
Going to fitness industry events is a no brainer when it comes to meeting like minded fitness professionals like yourself. Think about it though, how likely are they to collaborate with you due to trying to advance their own business or brand? It’s possible but it’s a limited number and if you want more people to know about you and what you have to offer you need to get out there and mingle with a different crowd. Join me while I quickly chat about networking with Cassie Vivyurka, owner/operator of Vivify Social Media and creator of Collab London, an awesome networking event in London Ontario Canada.
Join me while I chat with my good friend Matthew Morris, a fitness professional who supports people on their fitness and health journey as a personal trainer, team training coach AND fitness instructor. If your true goal is to impact as many people as you can then you can't afford to stay in only one area of fitness training. This is a great listen for group fitness instructors as well as participants/clients.
Kim Basler, Eating Psychology Coach joins us today to talk about the impact of fitness professionals on ones journey to being healthy. This of course is not a rocket science concept. What IS critical is the understanding that ones relationship with food is paramount and how the words or actions on a coach/trainer/instructor's part in this regard can definitely shift things.
Kim can be contacted at www.kimbasler.com as well as on Facebook and Instagram.
Oh who am I kidding, I’d listen to Dr. Alwyn Wong, DC and I talk integrative medicine, his three top tips for fitness instructors/participants for longevity and health in the industry and I actually get the low-down on the Kick Acid Diet, his best-selling book🤩!
Spoiler Alert🚨 - The Kick Acid Diet was NOT the original title! You’ll have to listen to find out what it was😉! Hint: He’s a self-proclaimed science nerd🔬😅!
Great episode, great visit, great guy💜!
Dr. Alwyn Wong is a Toronto-based chiropractor and medical acupuncturist currently accepting new patients. Using an integrated treatment approach, he helps individuals become pain-free and achieve better health.
His focus has shifted to more clinical work, but he continues to be passionate about fitness and to this end founded and is currently involved in the running of Zona Health and Performance Inc, a company dedicated to education fitness professionals.
He has also published a book, The Kick Acid Diet, which is currently available online through various retailers.

In the midst of presenting at canfitpro World Fitness Expo Toronto 2019, Taryn Alexander and I got together to chat quickly about the topic of nutrition for fitness, sport and life!
