Day by Day Dad Podcast: Recent Episodes

Ryan Burnham

I wanted to create a resource for expecting dads and new dads that is from a dad’s perspective. I want to have deep, meaningful conversations with other men looking at experiences, resources and anything else that will help anyone out there searching for this type of resource. I want to change the impression that men can’t take a more important role in child rearing from the start. I also want to make sure to convey that we don’t need to lose sight of our interests and priorities once the baby comes. We don’t need to become the dad who looks back on his 20s as if they were the best years of his life.

Ryan interviews Dr Anna Machin. Dr Anna Machin is an evolutionary anthropologist, writer and broadcaster. Her work is about the very nature of 'being human'. We discuss Anna's work on her book, "The Life of Dad." Anna has done extensive research into the evolution of being a dad and her work really helped me to adjust my expectations in a difficult time.

Anna's bio: She is world-renowned for her pioneering work exploring the science and anthropology of fatherhood and her cross-disciplinary interpretation of human love.

Anna began her research life as a primatologist working in zoos in both the UK and Europe. Following her MSc in Human Evolution and Behaviour at University College, London she undertook a PhD at the University of Reading and joined Professor Robin Dunbar’s research group at Oxford in 2008 where she remained until 2020. Today she is a visiting academic within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Oxford Brookes University. She is fascinated by what makes humans behave the way they do and uses a full range of disciplines and techniques – from genetic analysis, behavioural science and brain scanning to experimental psychology, sociology and hormonal analysis - to find answers to questions such as:

How do dads bond with their babies?
What is a human family?
What motivates us to form long-lasting relationships?
Why do we need to be social?
How do developments in social media and AI influence our behaviour?

Her key areas of research are the science and anthropology of fatherhood, the human family in all its diversity, the human social network, romantic relationships and the influence of technological innovation on our behaviour and health.

Anna lives in Buckinghamshire, England with her husband, 2 daughters, 3 dogs, 2 rabbits, 2 gerbils and 4 guinea pigs.

Ryan interviews Jamie Brasseur. Jamie was the first guest on the podcast when it launched earlier this year. I wanted to have Jamie back on for a couple of reasons; firstly, because of how he immediately jumped in to help me out when I was having a hard time a few months ago. I was in a rut and still trying to understand what my role was as the father of a newborn. I posted about it on social media and without hesitation, Jamie called me to check in and chat. That conversation meant the world to me because I know that a lot of dads struggle with the same issues but it is seldom discussed. The other reason is the main topic of the conversation. I asked Jamie what the hardest part of being a dad has been for him. His answer? Time management and balance.

Topics:

  • Kids growing up immersed in technology
  • How the most difficult part of parenting can shift depending on the development stage
  • Covid exacerbating time management
  • How communicating a plan as a couple came about
  • Typical day's priorities
  • Not being transactional with your time
  • How Jamie's days are different now that he's back at work
  • Typical afternoon routine with his son
  • How things are different today versus last year
  • Difficulty juggling working from home
  • Incorporating children into chores
  • What does being a good parent mean to Jamie?
  • How do you want to describe the pandemic to your child in 10-15 years?

What: Creating a resource for expecting dads and new dads that is from a dad’s perspective. Becoming a dad means you now have a new job that occupies 100% of your time. The life you led before becoming a dad is not totally lost and needs to be adapted to the changes that are coming. There are a lot of changes that happen but getting out ahead of those changes and taking inventory of your priorities will help you maintain the lifestyle that is important to your wellbeing.

Why: There aren’t enough resources available to dads that are positive in nature. We have a significant role to play during the pregnancy and after the birth of the child. Most of the information is geared towards women while men are left questioning the role they need to occupy. I want to change the impression that men can’t take a more important role in child rearing from the start. I also want to make sure to convey that we don’t need to lose sight of our interests and priorities once the baby comes. We don’t need to become the dad who looks back on his 20s as if they were the best years of his life.

Type of guest: Men who have become dads in the last 3-5 years. Men with full-time jobs and other interests they continue to explore on their own time without losing sight of the importance of fatherhood.

Format: 5-10 long-form questions including discussion followed by 3-5 short-form questions.
