Part-Time Characters is the show where we discuss movies as if we were part-time employees at a video store. We talk about classic movies, new releases and TV series. Our pet peeves are horror movie clichés, science innacuracy in movies and Quentin Tarantino directing the new Star Trek movie. Join the part-time employees, Maria, Bridget, Sam and Adonis every week to talk about our love of cinema.
A quick summary of all the new releases on Netflix, from animated series to original movies.
The gang gets together for an unscripted episode about movie trailers, Shark Week and Vin Diesel.
We take the time to review some summer movies and sequels including Marvel's latest, Ant Man and the Wasp and Sicario Day of the Soldado.
Reviewing summer releases Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Incredibles 2. Are they good sequels? Or are they just unnecessary?
This week Part-Time Characters goes back in time to review some classic horror/supernatural movies. We did our best to keep a brave face. It's another special episode of Retro Reviews, where we each pick a movie we haven't seen but we have been meaning to watch for quite some time. Then we all discuss them and decide if they live up to the hype.
One of us watched the original Ghosbusters, a perfect blend of comedy and horror, but they were less than impressed by it. Can you guess who it was? Then we discuss a major horror film that came out in the early 2000s, The Others. If this movie didn't make you keep the lights on at night, you are immune to ghosts and anything supernatural. Last but not least, we review a 70s cult classic, Suspiria. With the remake just announced last week with a teaser trailer, we decided to check out the original film and boy, it's a lot of fake blood, red velvet and dubbed dialogue.
Question of the Week: What supernatural movie scared the life outta you?
Adonis's Question: Playstation or Xbox?

We. Are. Back! After a very long break, Part-Time Characters is back and ready to talk about new movie releases, Netflix recommendations and pop culture. We decided to start with a bang and talk about Star Wars latest attempt, Solo: A Star Wars Movie. Joined by Bridget and Adonis, we talk about our new Han Solo, the terrible way he got his name, the new characters and how Donald Glover is annoyingly great at everything he does. How did you feel about the Solo movie? Don’t forget to tell us in the comment section!
We have been gone for five months and we wanted to start out slow. That is why we decided to post an episode every other week. That way we can concentrate on making good content and once we find our footing, we will gradually increase to releasing episodes weekly. We are also open to suggestions and any topics you might want to hear us talk about. Don’t forget to email us with any of your ideas.
Question of the Week: Do you think Disney is overdoing the Star Wars movies? What anthology movie do you want to see from Star Wars?

With so much to choose from, it's hard to sit down and pick one Netflix series that's worth watching. Not to worry! Hopefully Part-Time Characters can help with any indecisiveness. While Maria works the solo shift in this fictional video store, recurring guest and video store client, Jerry Rodriguez, joins this week's episode to talk about Netflix shows and specials that are worth a try.
We start off with a brand new Netflix Original, Godzilla, a computer animated film about humanity reconquering planet Earth from the kaijus. After some lukewarm feelings about Part I from the series, we move on to Dave Chappelle's latest special, Equanimity & The Bird Revelation. We discuss our unanimous love for GLOW and then spent way too much time on the German Sci-fi series Dark (be warned: full on spoilers with this one).
Jerry tried a few shows he had never seen before like Chewing Gum and The Good Place. He enjoyed only one out of those. Then I finish off the episode by talking about the latest season of Black Mirror and my new favorite animated series, Big Mouth.

Nobody likes to go to the movies in January. Apart from the Oscar Nominations that have expanded their release, there is just a lot of random horror movies and terrible romantic comedies. In this week's episode, we talk about all the January movies we hate and some that didn't disappoint.

In our first episode of 2018 and we are back discussing some things we have watched during our holiday break and our opinions about the Disney-Fox deal and the repercussions it might create.
We start off talking about our Christmas break what we have been up to. We also briefly pick our favorite holiday foods and traditions. This is when we all realize Adonis has never had the distinct pleasure of tasting Baileys.
After we each discuss the movies and series we have been watching, we talk about the Disney-Fox deal and what it means for the future of the movie industry. While many are excited because X-Men will finally share the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the consequences of this merger will change the industry as we know it.
Question of the Week: What is your favorite holiday meal? Is the Disney-Fox deal a good thing or a bad thing?

It is the end of 2017. It is time for fresh starts and welcoming 2018 with open arms. But before we could do that, Part-Time Characters wanted to take a trip down memory lane. This week's episode is a special holiday treat where our listeners get to hear all of the mistakes we make before the final edit is done.
The episode includes all the outtakes and laughs we had throughout 2017. You will hear all of Sam's sketch ideas for Gandalf the Wizard, Adonis's attempt to roast a meat and Bridget's Long Island and New Jersey accents.
There will also be some uncensored cursing brought on by frutrating video games, loud neighbors and mosquitoes.
We hope you enjoy our last episode of the year and you laugh as much as we did when we weren't 'on'. Happy New Year to all of you, Part-Timers!

Star Wars Episode VII came out in theaters a week ago and Part-Time Characters is finally ready to talk about The Last Jedi with all of the spoilers and rage. Accompanied by our guest, Jerry Rodriguez, we let the hate flow through us as we discuss the out of place humor, the new character pairings and 'the twist' that people either love or hate.
Be warned. We talk about every little detail of this movie. There will be all the spoilers. If you haven't seen this movie yet and don't want it spoiled for you, maybe come back in a week and have a listen.
We start off the episode by mentioning in a few sentences how we felt in general about The Last Jedi. Bridget makes the perfect analogy of comparing the movie to eating Froyo when what you really wanted was a sundae. We move on to analyze the humor and how it compares to the humor of previous Star Wars movies. Was it too much? Was it actually funny? Did it even feel like Star Wars?
Later on, we discuss each character's story and how they come together in the third act. We are all still perplexed with Finn and Rose's storyline and how this is not the Luke Skywalker we all know and love. Even Mark Hamill doesn't understand why Luke would hide away for so long.
Right before we almost join the Dark Side, we end the episode by speculating what can be expected from Episode IX. Let's just say, we don't have a lot of hope. Sorry, Princess Leia.

This week in Part-Time Characters, we talk about movies about making movies, filmmaking and show business. In honor of the Disaster Artist, a movie about the production of The Room, we discuss our favorite movies that concentrate on the art of making a movie, the struggles behind the scenes and the final product the audience gets.
Before Sam and I reveal our top five movies about making movies, we have a quick catch up about what we have been watching in our spare time. Sam watched 88 films in the month of November in a streaming service called Filmstruck. He tells me about the latest director he has explored and some of his movies he enjoyed. On the other hand, I talk about a delightful show I've been watching on Amazon Prime, The Wonderful Mrs. Maisel. When Midge Maisel's world is destroyed due to her husband leaving her, Mrs. Maisel takes to stand up comedy and decides to go for it even though in the 50s she is just supposed to be a housewife and a mother.
The majority of the episode is dedicated to movies about filmmaking. Sam picks some lovely classics plus other more obscure choices that showcase the love for movies by the people behind the camera. I pick a few movies that came out in the 2000s and have the triumph of picking five movies that Sam has never seen; a real first for Part-Time Characters!

How many 2016 movies did you mean to watch but never got around to it? In this week's episode, we discuss movies from last year we only recently saw for the first time. We also talk about movies we rewatched and if our opinions changed at all.
We start all the way back in January 2016 with movies like The Revenant and Kung Fu Panda and finish with the end of year Oscar Nominees like Hidden Figures, Moonlight and La La Land.
It should be warned this episode was recorded back in October, a few weeks after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico. We just want to let you know the audio might be a little off and you will hear a lot of nature and background noise. Just imagine you are camping with us, if that helps in any way.

It is that time of year when Pixar brings us an original animated movie and as expected, we all went un poco loco for Coco. Joined by our 'general manager' or better known as that Pixar Theory Guy, Jon Negroni, we discuss the film's design, music and characters. We start off the episode with a quick game of Lightning Round where we ask the question: What is your favorite Pixar character?
We move on to talk about the originality of Coco's premise and if it's in any way similar to The Book of Life. We also discuss the main characters and if the portrayal of the family is a bit vague or just right. Also, Jon elaborates on how Coco might fit into the Pixar Theory's timeline.

In our shortest episode to date, Bridget, Adonis and I talk about superhero movies, both Marvel and DC. Adonis does his best to defend Justice League and their CGI over Henry Caville's moustache and Bridget pretends she is not head over heels over Thor. Neither were very successful.
Before we get into any of the superhero stuff, we break the ice playing a short Lightning Round. The question: What movie has made you cry?

Bridget talks about a sci-fi classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Jenny watched the strangest movie ever made, Fantastic Planet, Sam watched one of the most praised musicals, Sound of Music, and I (Maria) watched the great Mifune in Yojimbo.

This week on Part-Time Characters we face our biggest fears, whether it's watching a horror movie from our childhood or talking face to face with Jerry-Garry-Larry. The gang gets together to discuss the remake of IT, adapted from Stephen King's novel. We bring in a special guest to review the film and compare it to the classic TV movie from 1990 starring the one and only Tim Curry.
We also bring back Lightning Round for our first segment. This time Sam calls the shots and fires a question we didn't prepare for: What is your favorite movie monologue? Let's just say we couldn't pick just one.
Later on, we also discuss horror movie remakes and why it appears to be more acceptable to remake or reboot movies from this genre than any other. Are we missing out on good horror originals because of this? What makes a good horror remake?

We didn't want season seven to end and go unnoticed by Part-Time Characters. Bridget and Maria get together one last time to recap the season finale of Game of Thrones, The Dragon and the Wolf. The main characters finally leave their usual locations and meet in King's Landing to discuss alliances and joining forces to fight the army of the dead.
Bridget continues to be upset about the lack of hypothermia and direwolves. Maria tries to dissuade her anger to no success. They celebrate Sansa's actions and condemn Cersei's total lack of logic. Bran finally speaks about Jon but Jon is getting busy- erm I mean, he's busy.

This week the Part-Time Characters get together and discuss some of the best scifi films from the 1970s and how their creativiy paved the way for other amazing classics. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is celebrating its 40th anniversary which inspired Sam to select this week's topic and show Bridget and Maria how many 70's movies they need to watch.
We also introduce a new segment to start the conversation called Lightning Round. Basically, we select a topic (this week we chose our favorite villains we love to hate) and we quickly select and talk about the first villain that comes to mind. We do another bonus round for any honorable mentions that come up in the process. Let us know what you think about this segment and if you'd like to hear more of it.

We need to talk about the latest Game of Thrones episode and all the horrible things that happened. This week, instead of recapping everything that happened by location, we decided to go for a more unstructured alternative. Bridget and Maria pick out all of the moments from this episode that felt inaccurate, overdone or too deux-ex-machina. Which were a lot.
Such inaccurate or enfuriating moments include Arya just being a total jerk to Sansa without giving her the benefit of the doubt, Daenerys taking all of her dragons to the North and the Night King's insane javelin skills.

Just because we are delayed in our Game of Thrones schedule does not mean we are not super excited and full of theories for the fifth episode of season seven, Eastwatch. For this week's recap, Adonis and Bridget get together to discuss Jon's new friendship with Drogon and possible romantic tension between him and Dany. Weird much?
We also had a third person join in to discuss the episode, our first time guest Kayla AKA Bridget's awesome cousin. She analyzes Arya's back handed compliments to Sansa and the appearance of a character that has been gone from the series for many years.
Also, why is no one believing Sam about the White Walkers?! So many frustration in this world full of obvious magic that refuses to believe the existence of the northern magic creatures.
Disclaimer: The audio is a bit jumpy every now and then but you get the idea of what they are saying. Sorry about this! Hopefully it will be better next time.

Another episode of our retro reviews! If you are new to our podcast, Retro Reviews is when we each assigned each other a movie to watch and then we discuss it together. It has to be a movie the person has never seen and should watch in order to call themselves a movie geek or fan. This week, we discuss Goodfellas, The Goonies, The Monster Squad and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The fourth episode of season seven of Game of Thrones left us all in shock, on the edge of our seats and more obsessed with dragons than ever. Maria and Bridget get together to recap 'The Spoils of War', analyzing what is up with Bran's emotionless behavior, Littlefinger's possible demise and did we mention dragons?

For this week's episode of Part-Time Characters, the friends get together to discuss their favorite movies based on books. With so many book adaptations, it was hard to whittle down the list. Just ask Sam.
However, we managed to get it done and bring you a diverse list- from young adult books, to horror adaptations and romantic historical dramas (cue Bridget's extended sigh).

Bridget and Maria get together once again to talk about the latest Game of Thrones episode: The Queen's Justice. They discuss the recurring theme of the sins of the fathers and how their sons and daughters can fix or perpetuate their mistakes. They also talk about Jon Snow and Dany meeting for the first time and their arm wrestling for power and truth.
Cersei accepts a very valuable gift that will play well for her revenge and Euron taunts Jamie about sleeping with Cersei once the war is over. Jamie learns from his failures and Lady Olenna has a meaningful conversation with Jamie Lannister.

This week Bridget, Sam and Adonis get together to confess the terrible movies they secretly like to watch. However, what you are going to hear is a lot of talk about animals. Seriously. From the Jungle Book vultures to Bridget's spirit animal to a bird who makes a constant and not so subtle appearance in the episode.
Somewhere along the way, you will find a tangent about War for the Planet of the Apes and their lukewarm feelings towards it. So if you like to hear us talk for a whole hour without any real structure but a lot of funny statements, this is the episode for you!
Also... can you guess Sam's biggest guilty pleasure movie? Hint: it is super-hero related.
Question of the Week: What is your favorite guilty pleasure movie?

We are back with a Game of Thrones recap, this time talking about the second episode of the season, Stormborn. I am joined by Adonis Gonzalez to analize Dany's skepticism of Varys, a suprise attack to a fleet, budding romance and the appearance of an awaited character.
Is Arya going to the right place? Should anyone be left alone with Littlefinger? What's going to happen with Brienne and Tormund? We answer all of these questions as best as we can.

It is our first episode as Part-Time Characters! For this episode, we focus on one director, Christopher Nolan, his style and his latest film, Dunkirk.
Before that, Adonis joins us to geek out about all the things announced at San Diego Comicon. From Stranger Things trailer to Marvel's horrible new series Inhumans, Adonis takes us through all the latest announcements.
Afterwards, we talk about Christopher Nolan and defend our favorite movie directed by him. Then Sam and Maria talk for quite a while about watching Dunkirk in 70mm and on IMAX. They discuss the movie's score, sound production and the great perfomances by actors like Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Cillian Murphy.
Question of the Week: What is your favorite Christopher Nolan film?
