Eight weeks ago, Rachel got the opportunity of a lifetime when she and 38 other young women from all over the world were picked out of 600 applicants to participate in a virtual music mentorship program and learn from some of the most successful and influential women in the music industry today. Each participant was assigned a mentor and tasked with completing a project with their mentor during weekly Zoom sessions. Rachel's mentor, singer-songwriter Whitney Phillips, has written songs for some of the biggest names in music like Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, and Kylie Minogue; but her biggest career success to date came during the pandemic when she cowrote the recent Billboard #1 single, Stuck With U, by Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande.

For this week's episode, Rachel and Whitney are sitting down for an exclusive interview where they discuss Whitney's background, her career and impressive catalog of songwriting credits, how she stays grounded and deals with the pressure of working with such high profile artists, and much more.

In light of the recent police killing of George Floyd, the latest in a long history of unarmed people of color being senselessly murdered in this country, we've decided to have a serious conversation about racism in America.

In our season one finale, Rachel discusses three things people who are white can be doing right now to advocate for people of color and end racism, and Haley shares her personal experience with coming to terms with her own inherent bias and thought patterns that could be harmful to people of color.

We end the episode by each sharing something specific we've done in the past that has been harmful to people of color in an effort to confront our own racist behaviors and promote growth.

This episode is meant to challenge our listeners who are white and motivate you to look within yourself to uproot your own inherent biases, while empowering you to do the hard and painful work of ripping them out.

It starts with a conversation. It starts with us.

Note: since this episode was recorded, nationwide protests and riots have significantly intensified, and at least one person of color has been killed in the process. His name was James Scurlock.

We took a little coronavirus break but we are BACK BAYBEEEE!!

We're so excited to be back for episode 9 that we threw out our normal structure (again, lol) and just had a raw and honest conversation about what we've been up to for the last couple of months, and how we've been handling everything that's been going on in our world.

Our community was hit extra hard by the pandemic and things haven't been easy so we wanted to dive into how each of us has responded to everything based on our enneagram types (Haley is a 7 and Rachel is a 3), what we've personally struggled with the most, as well as something positive we've gained from the experience so far.

This week we're talking about how to overcome anxiety when you're trying to network and make important business connections, how to stay on task when you work from home, and how to price your goods to get the best return.

We're also getting into how to deal with conflict, especially when someone else is committed to misunderstanding you, that one time Rachel cyber-bullied someone who came for Haley online, and we end this week's episode with a super real conversation about fertility struggles.

Episode 7 and things got weird 😂😂😂

This week we decided to keep it casual and once again deviate from our normal structure, it served this week's questions a little better so that's what we did! We start things off my answering a question about bullying and rejection, the dangers of conversion therapy, and how to open yourself up to friendships and relationships going forward. Then we move onto some practical tips for dealing with anxiety that hits especially hard in the morning or nighttime (or both), and how to get started when you've always wanted to paint but just never went for it.

MASSIVE DISCLAIMER PLEASE READ: This episode ends in a really weird way because the batteries died in a piece of our audio equipment, and you'll hear when this happens because Haley is talking about oil paintings and then it sounds like a DJ starts remixing her voice for a dance party and it's so funny we decided to leave it in 😂. We changed the batteries and still couldn't get it to work right so this episode ended up being a lot shorter than our normal episodes but look we did our best ok please let us live.

YALL. This is episode SIX! Can you believe?? Thank you thank you THANK YOU to all of our amazing listeners!

This week we're throwing our usual structure right out the window and going off-script to answer some questions we think are super important and relevant to most of our listeners. We're talking about how to navigate social media without harming your mental health, kids and social media, what to do when you feel like you're doing ALL THE THINGS and aren't being true to yourself, and what it really means to have a "calling".

These topics were super fascinating for us to dive into so we really hope you get something useful out of it.

We're doing this! It's our very first episode of The Creative Brain with Rachel & Haley and we're taking some time to tell you a little bit about ourselves and why we're starting this podcast as well as answering listener questions. Rachel takes questions about growing your brand as a freelancer, how to market yourself to potential clients, and remembering that your worth as an artist isn't dependent upon your sales; while Haley fields questions on what to do when it feels like you've tried it all when it comes to mental health and you're still struggling, as well as going deep into hopelessness and dealing with trauma.
