Anne Rulo, LMFT, LPC, was a counselor for 14 years, first with teens that had gotten into trouble with the law (and their families) and then at a college wellness center. Three years ago she stepped away to start writing and speaking. Her main focuses are faith, mental/emotional health, the intersection of the first two, supporting women, and parenting. Anne and Tim have led marriage retreats for coaches and their wives through FCA as well as some churches. They have been married for 15 years this summer, and have two children, Caleb (9) and Charlotte (6).
This is a fun episode. Such a wonderful and fun couple to chat with. Full of insight and wisdom, we were enjoying our conversation when Mother Nature decided to stop by their city with a lightning storm that cut their power mid-episode. Carolyn is the author of the book, "The Coaches Wife" which can be found on Amazon (click the link). She is also very responsible for getting her husband the job at Highland Park. Hear the story of how she locked up the job with a home cooked meal and delicious dessert!
Randy, a native of Abilene, Texas, started his coaching career as an assistant at Bryan HS. His first Head Coaching job came in 1981 at Ballinger HS where he compiled as 44-15-2 record with a program who did not have a winning record 5 year prior to his arrival. He then went on to Brownwood HS and amassed a 43-13-2 record in 5 seasons. Then he went on to his Alma Mater at Abilene Cooper HS where he spent the next 7 seasons building up that program. Then in 1999, he landed at Highland Park HS (Dallas, Texas) where he accomplished 300+ wins.
On October 14, 2011, Coach Allen became the 10th man in Texas high school football history to accomplish this feat. In January of 2014, Coach Allen was chosen as the recipient of the Grant Teaff Fellowship of Christian Athletes Lifetime Achievement Award, joining coaching greats Tony Dungy and Bobby Bowden. He was named the Don Shula National Coach of the Year in 2016. He was selected as an SMU Distinguished Alum in 2017.
The Highland Park Scots became the first Texas High School football program to win 800 games, and Coach Allen has the 3rd most wins of any Texas High School football coach in history! He is most assuredly on the "Mount Rushmore" of Texas high school football.
In this episode Kirby shares how both her and Anthony came to know the Lord through Fellowship of Christian Athletes. It was this on campus club that brought them to a saving knowledge of God and changed their life.
Also too Kirby shares a more vulnerable part of her life in that she struggled with body dysmorphia for a time. It was after taking control of her struggles through God's grace that she started her online platform "Freedom Fit Club" where she and other ladies who also have struggled come together to encourage eachother in both the physical aspect but spiritual as well.
Anthony and Kirby have two girls: Ayla (5) and Aria (2 1/2) and they are expecting Baby Boy Toribio in April 2022!!!

They have a powerful story of love and forgiveness, restoration and perseverance. Laing has been a coach for 45+ years. He owns two CIF Southern section titles, multiple Coach of the Year awards, and has left an indelible legacy across Southern California with all of lives he has touched.
Holly raised four children during all of this and showed us all how to love and sacrifice for her husband as she freed him up to work his calling in life. There are women all over the USA who have done this, and done it very well, but not as good as my Mom! (Yeah, I'm a little biased). Listen to hear how she gets through the tough times, but also how she supports Dad's mission and purpose.
Their "together story" is one that can be made for TV! For those of you that know my parents would think automatically that it was my Dad who pursued and wooed my Mom. Not the case! We found out that it was actually Holly who made the decisive move to let Dad know that he was the one. You got to hear to believe it.
Laing's Head Coaching resume':
He has also been an assistant at these and other schools where his impact was felt. There was a couple of years he took to be involved on staff at his church

Coach Coco, not only has been blessed with good players, he has been surrounded by good quality coaches. In high school his head coach was Dave Lay who would go on to become offensive coordinator at San Diego State and Colorado State. While coaching at Sweetwater High school Coco was fortunate to coach under Gene Alim and learn from the likes of Stanford great Dave Tipton. While coaching at Southwestern College, Coco was influenced by Dan Underwood who played at Michigan State and coached at Arizona State and San Diego State. Coco believes that to be a good coach, one has to incorporate the qualities of others, while still being himself. While at Mt. SAC, Coach Coco once again found himself surrounded by quality coaches led by the late great Coach Bill “Mountie Bill” Fisk.
Coach Coco, has coached numerous players that have gone on to become coaches, 71 and still counting. Coco feels that as a coach, it is his duty to give back to the coaching community in the form of clinics and seminars. Coco has become a resource for many coaches in the coaching community. He wants to share football to the world and has reached new heights with the creation of social media and the website

It was a most memorable trip to spend some time in a different part of the country with these great people. Special thanks to Cynthia Griffing (President of the American Football Coaches Wives Assoc.) for allowing us to tag along with her and the other Board members (Dalise Falkenstien and Jodi Masden).
Listen how he reminisces about his Father and the legacy he left for DeChon and his grandchildren. Hear how DeChon carries that legacy into his children.
He also shares about how proud he is of his son as he has since graduated college, and is going to take his hot at the NFL. Interesting note is that Coach Burns did not want to coach his own kids...but that was not in cards.
And finally, he imparts some very good words of wisdom to all young coaches who are looking to become head coaches. "A father, a coach that loves sports, and dedicated to making aa difference in the lives he comes in contact with". Enjoy!

Ephesians 4:11-13
Proverbs 3:5-6
Donnie and Lisa share their greatest memories with their athletes off the football field. They like to bring their boys over to the house and feed them. Well, sometimes when high school football players get together off the field, some crazy things can happen, especially when there is a trampoline or a bounce house involved.
Also, hear from Lisa how she handles Donnie in the highs and lows of coaching, and they even dip into Donnie's playing days. Remember, they met at Azusa Pacific University while Donnie was playing college ball, and onto the semi-pro stage. So, what happens when Donnie goes to show Lisa a specific defensive lineman technique he was working on? Let's just say, they are still married!
Donnie tells us about his mentors coming into coaching and some of his closest colleagues in the profession and what he has learned from each of them. And how do you coach up your 2nd and 3rd team guys? What does it take to keep those athletes who don't play a lot, but bust their tails everyday in practice?
Enjoy.
They have coached and fed their fair share of athletes who have gone on to great careers at the next levels, but to this day, Donnie maintains that his best year of coaching was when he was a part of a team that went 0-10...how can he say that? What does that even mean? Find out his secret in this episode.
Donnie is also a Pastor at Fresh Anointing New Life Ministries in Rancho Cucamonga.
They also discuss the important role that social media can play in football and in life. And give them a follow on the following platforms:
