Have you fed your rice crop? As aerial rice crops that don’t have urea underneath them will now be looking for some urea. The team recently got together and recorded a podcast discussing timings for PI and nitrogen. Take a listen.
In this podcast Annabel Arnold and Troy Mauger from the Rice Extension team sit down with Malcolm Taylor from Agropraisals Pty. Ltd. to discuss weed management in aerial sown crops.

In this podcast the Rice Extension team sit down with Malcolm Taylor from Agropraisals Pty. Ltd. to discuss weed management in drill sown crops. They cover:
• The challenges with continued wet weather, un-trafficable paddocks and weed management. • What to do when your foundation spray has been missed (either the 3-way mix (stomp, gramoxone, magister) or two-way mix (stomp, magister). • Addressing Dirty Dora in drill sown crops when you're limited with using MCPA. • Managing Pin Rush in rice-on-rice situations.
Listen to Brian Dunn, Mark Groat and Emily Fasham as they discuss nitrogen management options for growers who have aerial sown and were unable to put urea underneath their crop. The team discuss two options for growers: a split application of urea or a mid-season dry down.
Growers and agronomists are encouraged to look at all options and choose the one that will suit their situation best.

This week we hear from Anthony and Jim Salvestro, Wilbriggie as they talk about their experience and plan for double cropping after canola. In 2016/17 they grew a dry broadcast Viand crop after canola. This year they will drill Viand straight after canola and they share their strategy for the season.
The late water allocations has meant many growers are considering late sowing. Harriet asks Brian Dunn, NSW DPI about the considerations growers should make if planting outside the recommended planting window for Reiziq.

The recent and forecasted rainfall has meant some growers are concerned they might not being able to get back onto their paddock in time to apply the 3 way mix. We chat with Malcolm Taylor about why the 3 way mix is so important, but also discuss alternative options that growers can use.

Today’s episode is all about the intertwining world of rice, wildlife and the environment!
We caught up with Ecologist Matt Herring who gives us insights into the secret life of the Australasian Bittern and explains the Local Land Services Bittern Friendly Rice Project. Results to date for this project has indicated that the density of Bitterns utilising the Bittern Friendly Rice is 3-4 times greater than the control sites. This week we are talking all things Whole Grain Yield with Dr Rachael Wood and PhD candidate Allister Clarke.
Rachael explains her findings on the impact of grower management practices on whole grain yield. She looked in particular at planting density, the rate and timing of fertiliser application and different irrigation methods on rice grain quality.
Allister Clarke is currently completing his PhD through the Functional Grains Center and Food Agility CRC to develop a model to allow rice to be graded on quality at the delivery stand.
