Dr. Mark Dever concludes the 2022 EFCA Theology Conference by calling us to remember the significance of the Church.
Dr. George Yancey, professor of Sociology at Baylor University, approaches the topic of racism, colorblindness, anti-racism and whether or not Christianity can say anything unique about these topics.
What exactly is hope? Dr. David Pao addresses the definition of this word and how the Christian should hope based upon the reading in 1 Peter 3:15 about giving a reason "for the hope you have."
Mickey Klink, pastor of Hope Evangelical Free Church in Roscoe, Illinois, addresses Christian Nationalism and politics as an idol in the Church and how it affects our witness.
God isn't just saving His people, he's sanctifying them. Dr. JT English reads from Leviticus and 1 Peter to show how God is making us a holy people through justification, sanctification and glorification. With this in mind, he addresses the state of the local church, the struggles of the pastor during COVID-19 and how we were made for this moment to lean into discipleship and sanctification. He believes "we have a discipleship disease that's been misdiagnosed" and "we can get healthy or holy again."
In this session, Dr. Carl Trueman asks and answers the question, "How is it that sexual desire has become so central to human identity?" He walks through the idea of how desire becomes identity and then how sexual desire becomes identity and lastly, he offers biblical reflections on how that tracks with biblical narrative.
Timothy Keller defines defeater belief like this: "Every culture hostile to Christianity holds to a set of 'common sense' consensus beliefs that automatically make Christianity seem implausible to people. These are what philosopher's call 'defeater beliefs.' In his talk, Dr. Keith Plummer largely addresses and answers our western culture's defeater belief of scientism.

Introduction to Immigration
Our primary lens for viewing immigrants is as fellow image bearers, those created in the image of God and having dignity. Our primary lens for understanding immigration should be biblical and missional, not political. Principles that govern our thoughts and actions toward immigrants since they are created in the image of God, fellow image bearers, include sacrificial love, hospitality and missional opportunity.
It is a natural, though sinful, human response to fear outsiders and diminish their humanity. Just as, in and by the Spirit, we counter the sin of pride with the disciplines of humility and gratitude, we must also counter the sins of xenophobia and ethnocentrism with the disciplines of hospitality (Gen. 18) and missional courage (Acts 10). The word of the year in one of the word lists in 2017 was xenophobia, a “fear or hatred of foreigners, people from different cultures, or strangers.” This is contrary to the exhortation from the writer of Hebrews who writes to Christians, “do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers “philoxenia”(Heb. 13:2). Christians do not exude fear of others, xenophobia, but rather extend love to strangers, philoxenia.
As with any other issue related to sin, sanctification and mission, our movement and our pastors need to speak boldly and clearly about what the Bible says and how that influences every facet of belief and behavior.

Our theme for the Summit was “What it Means to be Evangelical”. Considering societal turmoil, the word "evangelical" has developed various meanings, some which are not favorable.
On this episode of the podcast, we share the opening message from the Summit by David Dockery, in which he chronicles the history of evangelicalism and where he sees evangelicalism today. In his message, David also provides a look forward with a focus on some ways we in the EFCA can respond in order to be a beacon of hope and light in an increasingly challenging world.

During this Advent and Christmas season, Christians and churches remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. This emphasizes his full humanity. As we remember the birth of Jesus Christ, we also worship him. This emphasizes his full deity. This is the heart of who Jesus Christ is, God the Son incarnate, fully God and fully man.
In our EFCA Statement of Faith we confess, “4. We believe that Jesus Christ is God incarnate, fully God and fully man, one Person in two natures. Jesus—Israel's promised Messiah—was conceived through the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.”
To guide us in our thinking about the incarnation this Christmas season, Steve Wellum joined me for a discussion on Christmas and the Incarnation. A couple of years ago he wrote a masterful book on this topic entitled, God the Son Incarnate: The Doctrine of Christ.

Are compassion and justice ministries the gospel? Or are they entailments of the gospel? On the one hand are those who make them the gospel who end up denying the biblical gospel, that which is done and accomplished in the person and work of Jesus Christ. This is the good news that affirms "it is finished," and is to be proclaimed. Rather than a biblical gospel, they end up with a social gospel applying Christian ethics to the social ills of the day, e.g., economic inequality, poverty, racial tensions, addictions, etc. but without the biblical gospel. One of the word of the year lists last year consisted of xenophobia, a "fear or hatred of foreigners, people from different cultures, or strangers." In light of the worldwide migration, and of the fear associated with immigration, it is not surprising. But is it biblical, is it the appropriate response of a believer, of an Evangelical? Interestingly, one of the biblical commands is the opposite of this, evidence in the term philoxenia, a "love for strangers or foreigners; hospitality, kindness to strangers." This year marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. This often is one of those racial markers over which there are differences of opinion. Likely, many white brothers and sisters have probably not thought much about this anniversary. Conversely, most African American brothers and sisters are quite aware of this anniversary, and not to remember or recognize this in some way would be hurtful. Many of the differences regarding Martin Luther King, Jr. are along racial lines. The church, committed to and compelled by the gospel of Jesus Christ, has engaged in both the proclamation of the gospel and its accompanying social ministries of compassion and justice. This has been reflective of the church from the beginning. Affirming this reality, it is important to address and assess how Evangelicals have historically addressed these matters of race in the 18th-19th centuries, some of our significant right-steps and have some of the other painful missteps and sins of the past 150-200 years which remain with us today.
