Role of Primary Care in Suicide Prevention During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Primary care providers have an important role in suicide prevention, knowing that among people who die by suicide, 83% have visited a primary care provider in the prior year, and 50% have visited that provider within 30 days of their death, rather than a psychiatrist. The psychosocial impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic poses increased risk for suicide and other mental health disorders for months and years ahead. This article focuses on screening tools, identification of the potentially suicidal patient in the primary care setting, and a specific focus on suicide prevention during widespread, devastating events, such as a pandemic.

Practical Approach for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Pruritus
Itchy skin can be debilitating. It is chronic if longer than six weeks. The itch is not like a normal itch that can be relieved by scratching. This itch is under the skin and cannot be scratched. Having experienced this from narcotics after a dental procedures is convincing enough to only take Tylenol and alternate with ibuprofen for dental pain control. It can be that bad. There are many reasons for the itching such as medication as mentioned earlier, pregnancy, malignancy, disease, allergies and psychiatric issues. The Color of Nursing - Paperback Erin started her path in Nursing after initially FAILING nursing classes due to lack of focus and lack of discipline. Married at 21 years of age, and a new child on the way, she was compelled to get out of her own way and grow up! While on a waiting list to enroll in a different undergraduate nursing program, she decided to enroll in a Licensed Practical Nurse Program and worked as a nursing assistant until graduation. She worked 8 years as a LPN thinking that going back to school yet again was out of her reach. With a defaulted student loan and barely enough money for gas to travel to take the entrance exam, she received the call within 48 hours with notification of passing the exam and was accepted into Alcorn State University. Now with a 3 hour daily commute, no way to pay for school and a less than supportive work supervisor, she realized that the negative talk from others and herself was only background noise and used that negativity as fuel to press forward.

UC is a gastrointestinal (GI) disease that is localized to the large intestine, or colon, where inflammation can affect either the entire organ or a portion of it. Approximately 1.86 billion patients have been diagnosed with UC globally, with 1.54 billion patients currently receiving treatment. Traditional therapies have yielded $4.18 billion in annual sales around the world, a figure expected to increase to $6.85 billion by 2022 with the approval of various pipeline drugs (Gohil and Carramusa, 2014).
CD can affect any part of the GI tract, but most commonly involves both the large and small intestines. Although CD is more severe than UC, the global prevalence is much lower, with only 1.3 million patients diagnosed and 0.8 million who currently receive treatment. Still, traditional therapies have resulted in an impressive $3.17 billion in global market sales, which is predicted to increase to $4.20 billion by 2022 (Gohil and Carramusa, 2014).
Traditional therapies are highly effective in these hard-to-treat diseases. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors are firmly established as treatments but sometimes present problems, such as immunogenicity or an eventual loss of response (Gohil and Carramusa, 2014).

After Gestational Diabetes: An Overlooked Care Transition in Primary Care
Abstract
"Women with history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have significant risk for developing type 2 diabetes (T2D), especially within 6 years of giving birth. Children exposed to GDM-complicated pregnancies may also experience future metabolic abnormalities. Care transitions following GDM-complicated pregnancies are often fragmented resulting in missed opportunities to implement T2D prevention strategies. Primary care providers of women with history of GDM and their children have opportunities to deliver transgenerational health promotion interventions encompassing: T2D screening, reproductive life planning, lifestyle changes to support reduction of GDM-related metabolic risks, self-advocacy for lifelong T2D screening, weight management, and promotion of breastfeeding" (LaManna and Quelly, 2020).

However, implicit associations (unconscious, uncontrollable, or arational processes) may influence our judgements resulting in bias. Implicit biases occur between a group or category attribute, such as being black, and a negative evaluation (implicit prejudice) or another category attribute, such as being violent (implicit stereotype)
