According to a UNICEF report, Canada has one of the best educational systems in the world... for kids over five. For kids under five, we have one of the worst systems in the developed world in terms of quality and availability.
But the childcare crisis is nothing new. Early childhood education has been unaffordable and inaccessible for decades. It's one of the biggest causes of stress for parents of young children, with long waitlists and many households going into debt so they can afford it.
Karin Kirkpatrick, MLA for West Vancouver - Capilano, and Pamela Wallberg, CEO of Alderwood House School, join Coastal Front to enlighten us on the childcare crisis in BC.
The recent budget suggests the NDP is pinning its hopes on the federal government to deliver on promise of $10-a-day daycare. But is the intention to cap fees having a negative effect? Pamela explains how operators are closing spaces because of staffing shortages or delaying plans to create more spots because it is no longer financially feasible to do so. Meanwhile, Karin estimates the fee cap could cause BC to lose 4,000 future child care spaces.

Member of Parliament for Vancouver-Kingsway, Don Davies, has introduced more legislation in the House of Commons than any MP in the country. That’s a big feat since he only became an MP in 2008! With a little over a year under our belt, BC health officials need to ask themselves if they know more about the virus today compared to this time last year. If the answer is yes, great they should share it with the population and get things moving in a real way. If the answer is no, then we need to seriously re-visit the methods we have in place which are responsible for collecting data, and by extension how policies are informed.
Canadians have been anxious to see what would be included in the 2021 Federal budget. There has been no shortage of opinions, positive or negative. At the end of the day, the budget tabled on April 19th, 2021 will become the basis of the Liberal Party’s election platform, which will no doubt be announced later this year. Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy program (AKA Global corporations, sponsored by Government of Canada) was aimed to help struggling businesses. Unfortunately, it opened the floodgates for foreign companies to continue to rake in millions, while receiving subsidies paid for by the average Canadian taxpayer.
There are simple solutions to fix this problem, and Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Government can still take action to get foreign corporations who took CEWS - and simply didn't need it - to pay this money back.
We need MPs in Ottawa to stand up for Canadians. View my proposal at 5:01.

Meet my grandfather. A 97-year-old veteran who was willing to die for our country, and now the systematic failures of Canada’s healthcare system are rushing him to his deathbed. This message is for: Minister of Health, Adrian Dix Board Chair for Fraser Health Authority, Jim Sinclair Parliamentary Secretary, Mable Elmore Deputy Minister, Stephen Brown President & CEO of Fraser Health Authority, Dr. Victoria Lee There is an alarming lack of basic treatment, from inaccessible showers to non-existent rehab, and the system that is supposed to be helping him recover from COVID-19 seems to be the very thing holding him back from recovery. This man who fought for us needs us to fight for him and help regain his dignity. I know his story isn’t the only one of its kind and we shouldn’t accept this. I encourage you to contact your Mayor, MLA, or MP and share your story - or comment below!
Trudeau pledged to help “small business owners pay workers… because of COVID-19 ” with the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), and while it certainly has been a lifeline for some small businesses, it has also been a huge cash grab by major corporations – and not just Canadian ones. So, what do Toyota, Loreal and the Roman Catholic Church have in common? These foreign corporations received big payouts in the form of wage subsidies from our government using Canadian taxpayer money... and these aren't even on our top 10 list.
The BC Recovery Benefit (BCRB) is deeply flawed in execution. The application is convoluted and time consuming. Seriously. Just watch my earlier video to see the tedious process first-hand. Many people who don't qualify should, and just as notably, an alarming amount of people who qualify shouldn't. I have a simpler solution.

How many times have you heard unprecedented this year? We've lost count and we get it. It feels the whole world has been turned upside down in 2020 because of the COVID pandemic and federal governments all over the world have scrambled to give out subsidies to keep the economy afloat. However, this does not excuse our government to make foolish decisions and put future generations at risk. In fact, it's the opposite.

As part of the 2020 Election Campaign, Premier John Horgan promised that if his BC NDP party was re-elected, they would provide a Recovery Benefit to British Columbians. On October 6th he Tweeted, “People are struggling to pay the bills because of the pandemic — they need direct relief. Our BC NDP plan includes a $500-$1000 COVID Recovery Benefit to help people who are struggling the most.” Well that’s a nice promise. John Horgan and the NDP keep making noise about intending to deliver, but as always, the devil is in the details.

With fully enclosed bubbles in operation province-wide, the number of deaths will plummet, and the government could lift many of the strict lockdown measures that have been put in place. I’m not suggesting that we throw caution to the wind and now have other public health measures remain in place like wearing masks and washing hands. But if we increase our efforts to specifically protect our most vulnerable citizens, we might be able to lift some of the more severe restrictions that apply generally. That will not only allow many British Columbians to go back to living a more normal life, but it will also spur on massive economic activity. This surge in economic growth will generate more than enough tax revenue to cover the small cost to protect the most vulnerable people in our province. BC People: Please share amongst your network and send it to your MLA!

The failure rate of most new restaurants in Vancouver is staggeringly high. Of those that survive, even fewer are able to achieve the status of an institution in this City. Karri has managed to do that with not one, but two restaurants, as well as a cooking school.
The only reason she stopped there is because Karri decided to take her foot off the gas so she could raise her family the right way.
Known for its balance of fine dining without formalities and a forever-evolving menu, Chambar has earned its place among the best restaurants in Vancouver.
In this podcast we explore the entrepreneurial side of running a restaurant. Karri started with a $5000 pre approved Visa card; she walks us through her story for how she turned that, into a 16 year old establishment that only seems to be getting better with time.
In this episode we talk about:
-The foundations of Chambar
-Ditching the corner office & manifesting values
-The biggest challenges of starting a restaurant

“With the creative industries, it is a long game...someone who’s working on a TV show... it may take three or four years along with travel grants to go to market, to pitch your program, or to develop your show so that it’s ready to be sold … It may not show in the year that the investment is made...That’s what we’re working on tracking now.”

Stacy Webb of the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC is here to discuss the health of the province's freshwater fish stock and habitat.
The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC is a private, non-profit organization created to enhance and conserve BC's freshwater fisheries for public benefit. BC is home to some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world. Each year, over $300,000 licensed anglers spend around $500M in BC, predominantly in rural and remote areas. That being said, in 2018, the program ran a deficit of $700K, and all hands point towards the incredibly low cost of an annual fishing license, which is set by the Ministry of Forests, Lands, & Natural Resources. This organization needs funding to maintain habitats, and to protect fish populations, including endangered fish species such as the white sturgeon.

Surprisingly, nearly 100% of Vancouver’s emissions come from two contributing factors. Can you guess what they are? Knowing this, it becomes a lot easier to conceptualize a plan that will enable Vancouver to become an emission free City.

In 2018, overdoses in BC killed over 1500 people. Fentanyl is so rampant in Vancouver that it’s rare to come across an addict who still uses heroin on a regular basis. Walk through the Downtown East Side after welfare payment day and you’ll see collapsed bodies leaning against walls on every street. It’s an epidemic, and one that is not being addressed properly.

Unsurprisingly, David Eby (Attorney General of BC and MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey) is a very busy person. He agreed to forty five minutes on the mic, so I decided to ask some hard hitting questions about the new property taxes that will be impacting BC and Vancouver residents.
The BC NDP passed a raft of new taxes designed to address two problems with our housing market: affordability and money laundering. David Eby and BC Finance Minister Carole James suggest that laundered money funded $5.3B in BC real estate purchases in 2018, contributing to BC’s staggeringly high home prices.
However, there has been some criticism with the roll out of these new taxes, and as a BC homeowner, I had some questions myself. Are these taxes actually preventing foreign purchases? Can we accurately detect who the speculators are?
In this episode, David Eby fields questions about the speculation tax, the school tax, and the foreign home buyer tax. He also talks about the public registry, and what it means for beneficial ownership.
