The last decade has been called the decade of the reproducibility crisis—but this isn’t just a temporary flare-up. It’s a chronic, structural issue that cuts across disciplines and impacts the very foundation of how we produce and trust scientific knowledge. In this episode, we speak with members of the ReproducibiliTea Journal Club, a grassroots movement that empowers early-career researchers to tackle problems in reproducibility head-on by building local communities focused on open, transparent science.Together, we explore how flawed incentives, poor data practices, and a culture of publishing over precision have led to a growing erosion of trust in science—from questionable p-values to the exclusion of inconvenient data. And while some of this is driven by pressure or lack of funding rather than bad faith, the consequences are real—especially in fields like biomedicine, where shaky evidence can risk patient lives.But it’s not all bad news. We all have experienced the heat of the moment: utter words that weren’t meant to be said and often make things worse. It is natural to have rough days and can easily resolve such situations. Cochrane is an international charitable organization promoting evidence-informed health decision-making by producing top quality systematic reviews which have now become the gold standard for evidence-based information. Liya Merzon is a psychologist and I'm doing my PhD at the Translational Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at Aalto University. In my research, I'm applying computational modelling and machine learning to improve the diagnostics of ADHD in children. In my studies, I've been always fascinated by how applied mathematics could be combined with psychological knowledge to help us understand the human mind.

Lauri Elsilä is a pharmacist and a doctoral researcher at the Department of Pharmacology, at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Helsinki. Currently, he studies the behavioural effects of psychedelic compounds, but is endlessly fascinated by the connection between the brain and behaviour in general, and would love to understand how the minds of different animal species differ.

Since 2004 Professor Leppä has worked as a medical oncologist at the Helsinki University Hospital Cancer Center, since 2010 as the head of the lymphoma unit and since 2012 as a professor of clinical oncology. Since 2007, she has been a chair of the Nordic large B-cell lymphoma working group. Her ongoing special research interests are the optimisation of the treatment of patients with lymphomas and the identification of biologically relevant prognostic factors.

Her main project is about the gamified augmented reality app Phobys to reduce fear of spiders, which has been tested on its effectiveness in a clinical trial and it available on all app stores. Gold! Gold! That sweet yellow metal that shines and makes people rich. It also makes fancy spoons, tacky teeth, and… dragonflies?! Well not exactly, we are cheering in that last one; but we promise it's useful! In today’s episode we will tell you some unexpected ways in which we can use gold.
Eduardo is a PhD candidate at the laboratory of Prof. Antonio Echavarren at the Institut Catalá d’Investigació Química (ICIQ) in Tarragona. He loves weird organometallic chemistry (chemistry that happens with metals and carbon structures). With the special chemical properties metals have, he hopes to “cheat” the system and develop chemicals that make impossible reactions well… possible.

In this interview, we jump down the rabbit hole of psychedelic drugs and their potential use in treating depression, with the help of our very own mad-hatter Rafael Moliner.
Rafael is a PhD candidate in the laboratory of Eero Castrén at the University of Helsinki. Rafael lost his mind long ago to the pharmacology of neuroplasticity induced by drugs. He believes that making the adult brain more malleable through enhanced plasticity holds huge therapeutic potential to treat devastating mental disorders like depression. Did you ever wonder how solar eruptions affect the space, as they travel away from the Sun? In this episode Eleanna Asvestari and Guliano Didio are interviewing Dr. Matti Ala-Lahti about plasma in space, solar eruptions, and the "sheath region" that is formed when mass ejected during a solar eruption travels in space.
Dr. Matti Ala-Lahti is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki where he recently defended his doctoral thesis. He received a grant to start working in autumn 2021 as a postdoctoral research at the University of Michigan. Matti's research focuses on space plasma environments driven by solar eruptions, i.e. sheath regions driven by interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). His love for space might one day take Matti to space LITERALLY as he applied for the astronaut program in Europe!

How does the eye work? Well... Ehm... You have the eye of course, than the light goes inside the eye, through the pupil... and then the light hits the RETINA. Wait... the what now?! "A carpet of neurons"! That's how our interviewee, Laura, describes the retina, the sheet of cells in our eyes, that detects light, and allows us to... well, to see! In today's episode, Giuliano & Cecilia have a lovely conversation with the PhD student Laura Celotto about the eye, the retina, and... FISH! (I know... AGAIN!)
Laura is a scientist and an actress. She studied Neuroscience in Trieste, where she found out that neurons can wire up in beautiful architectures like the retina. Currently, she is a PhD student in Dresden, where she studies the retina regeneration in the zebrafish, a tiny little fish from South Asia. Apart from being a nerdy scientist, she is also a passionate reader: “Three men in a boat” – which is her favourite book – describes her life better than this bio ;-)
