This episode is me sharing my frustration with titles conflating. For ME, it is important to educate potential clients on what they are getting when they hire a designer as oppose to an influencer as oppose to a friend with a good eye. This is not a knock on anyone but it is to give clarity on the things that you should look at when thinking you may need to hire a designer. I hope this helps!

Kevie Murphy is the founder and principal of k.a. murphy interiors, a full-service design firm focused on high-end residential interiors. In Kevie’s interiors, function dictates and informs, while beauty always transcends. Balancing both, in striking and elevated ways, is fundamental to her vision.
Design wasn’t Kevie’s first career. Growing up in Port Jefferson Station, New York, Kevie went to Boston University and then attended law school. This led to her working as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn, after which she entered the private sector and became a partner at a New York City firm.
It was when Kevie and her husband purchased a Brooklyn Heights home that required extensive renovation, that she realized her passion for interior design and enrolled at the New York School of Interior Design.
Everything has brought Kevie to this moment: her passion, her enthusiasm, and her ability to connect with people, which she uses, today, to help make people’s lives better. This starts with her own life: 1 husband, 4 kids, and 3 houses. All of which Kevie sees as “ongoing, always changing, and forever works in progress.” They’re also the perfect examples of what Kevie means when she says, “Home is your memory maker.”

Nicole Gibbons is an interior designer and entrepreneur best known for her fresh use of color and fashion-forward point of view on decorating. Her work and expertise has been sought by top media outlets like HGTV, OWN - Oprah Winfrey Network, TLC, Good Morning America, The Rachael Ray Show, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens and more. Before pursuing interior design, Nicole spent nearly a decade managing PR for one of the world’s largest retail brands. Not only has her experience given her first-hand knowledge of what it takes to build a world-class brand, but also deep and unique insights into what customers really want when it comes to designing their homes. Nicole’s work in the design world enabled her to identify that the paint industry was one ripe for disruption. With a broken shopping experience and no legacy paint brand focusing on convenience and simplicity, or marketing to a creative, digitally-driven generation, she saw an opportunity to improve the process from start to finish. Nicole founded Clare to help people create spaces they love — and actually enjoy the process along the way.

Susan Hayward is an award-winning interior designer, member of the American Society of Interior Designers and International and Furnishings Design Association, and CAPS certified by the National Association of Home Builders. Before entering the interior design industry, Susan worked in the public relations and development field for many years after graduating from Boston University. After her son was born, Susan left her public relations position and she and her husband, Everett, started a photography business in the basement of their home. When Hayward Photography was well on its way to success, Susan decided it was time for her to pursue her true passion: interior design. She went back to school, where she studied rehabilitation counseling. She focused her initial interior design work on downsizing, and the principles of form following function that she gained from her work at the time has become a mainstay of her business today. In 2006, started her own design firm, Susan Hayward Interiors.
Nearly two decades later, Susan remains motivated and excited by the opportunity to create beautiful spaces for her clients. She thinks of interior design as a giant puzzle, where all the pieces need to fit together to form the perfect space. Whether designing for commercial or residential, her process is all about great communication, working together, and creating something beautiful.

A native of Toronto, Canada, Hema was a practicing attorney for several years before following her heart and pursuing a career in fashion. In 2014, she moved to Los Angeles to chase her goal, and spent the following 7 years dressing A-list celebrities, styling ad campaigns and editorials, and working with some of the top fashion talent in the world.
Completely self-taught, Hema's interior design career began in 2021 when one of her styling clients asked for help decorating their home. Because of her eye for design and ability to execute her creative vision, that first project snowballed into several more. Hema now designs residential and commercial spaces around the country. As the business continued to grow rapidly, it became clear that it needed its own identity apart from Hema. Over her 25 year career, she has helped craft lines for Schumacher, Barbara Barry, David Phoenix and Jiun Ho, and has acted as guest art director on more than a few licensed lines for name designers. Saana’s work has been used in the White House State Dining Room as drapery, and featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, Home Textiles Today & House Beautiful. Saana lives in San Francisco with her husband Matt, a NASA robotics engineer. In addition to her ongoing love affair with textiles, she spends time restoring her 1890’s Victorian fixer-upper, hosting dinner parties, and experimenting with linocut and collage. To learn more about Saana’s consulting and how you can work together, visit her website.
Known for her beautiful and meticulous work, Saana Baker studied textile design with an emphasis on weaving at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. Eight great years in New York followed, working at domestic upholstery mills and as the Director of Woven Design for the august fabric house Schumacher.
The opportunity to work with Barbara Barry then took her to Los Angeles, where she spent more than a decade actualizing the vision of this iconic and brilliant designer. There she broadened her skills to include rugs, bedding, wallpaper, dinnerware, as well as showroom and photo styling.
Now, back home in San Francisco, Saana is focusing on new clients including Jiun Ho, McGuire Furniture, and David Phoenix, along with other thoughtful, creative firms and discerning private clients.
Her inspirations date back to childhood. From an early age, Saana loved her grandmother’s elegant home filled with antiques and eclectic items picked up traveling as a military wife. It offered a contrasting aesthetic from her Berkeley upbringing, helmed by two iconoclastic parents devoted to paths of free-thinking and change-making. Seeing both sides helped her develop a broad set of references and an impulse to work toward balancing beauty and substance. The sense of joy found in a home filled with things that truly speak to its inhabitants is a key inspiration and guiding philosophy.

Born and raised in New York City, I always found myself surrounded by cutting edge art and stunning architecture.
My passion for art was one that developed early in life and always stuck with me. While studying Graphic Arts & Architecture at the City University of New York, I discovered photography through my coursework and began diving into the medium as a hobby. That hobby soon flourished into a professional career as I discovered a way to combine my excitement for photography & architecture.
I spent the first 15 years of my professional career as a Photographer, Art Director and Creative Director for marketing organizations across New Jersey and New York City. Today, as an independent photographer, I am able to combine 15 years of client-facing services, along with my vision as an artist to bring a best in class customer experience to my clients.

Designer Linda Hayslett has a strong fashion and entertainment background. A lot of her inspirations comes from her experience working at companies such as VH1, Allure, W, Details & InStyle Magazine.
She lived and worked in New York City for many years soaking up the electric vibe of the city. After working in fashion on the east coast, in 2003 she made a decision to move west and become an Angeleno. Linda planted roots in Los Angeles and started to absorb the west coast atmosphere. She worked with a well known celebrity stylist and assisted in styling celebrities such as Hillary Swank, Sandra Oh, Charlize Theron, Heather Graham and more.
Her passion in creativity led her to go back to school and get a degree for Interior Design at FIDM. After graduating Summa Cum Laude in Interior Design, Linda became interested in construction and planning. While Co-Designing on projects with other designers, Linda created LH.Designs.
From her connections and experience in the industry, she adds an arsenal of skills along with her talents. With her knowledge, she has infused a warm touch that is often missed when clients hire only a contractor or architect for their project. She realized that offering services that tailor and integrate the designer with construction at each level of building, from concept to completion, was the best way a person would truly get the lifestyle experience that they are looking for. By infusing a construction team with design, LH.Designs can uniquely make a client's project not only aesthetically pleasing but can raise the property's value higher than expected.

I’m a worker. When I take anything on, I obsess about it, and stay up nights thinking about it until it comes to fruition in a special way. It’s not about a need for control or perfection. Be it a birthday party, a friend’s engagement, or an event at my kid’s school: I’m all in. I’m in with all the bells and whistles. When it comes to decorating, I either get an idea in my head and immediately realize my vision for a space, or I spend weeks thinking about what that piece of greatness will be, and then it hits me and I’m running.
The most time I spend on projects is the planning phase. I pore over pictures of furniture pieces. I lay them up into mood boards on my computer. I cut them into squares and move them around. I pile fabric samples on top each other and the pictures to determine the palette and the combinations. I continue to ask if this is what my client will love: will they see it as I do, is it right, is it them? When the foundation is there, it’s time to layer on top of it. More thinking…
I always turn to books for inspiration. Whether it be my piles of coffee table design books, or my hotel books, or most often I look at wallpaper books. They give me the most inspiration for someone’s home. If ever I feel stuck, a wallpaper sample pile gets me going, and spawns something; even if I don’t use the paper. My family sees the things happening in my head all the time.
My team is also precious to me. Each person who works with our clients is special and brings a unique perspective. With so many moving parts, having a flexible, very patient, smart team who can make turns on a dime is crucial to keeping projects moving in the right direction. Everyone sits right on top of one another because we’re all so dependent on each other. We tried sitting apart, and it just didn’t work.
It’s part the client and their likes, it’s part us and our influences, and it’s part everything else around that just moves us.
This is how we build great spaces.

Davina Ogilvie is founder of Wovn Home, a direct-to-consumer custom window treatmentscompany based in New York.
After growing up in Bangkok, Thailand surrounded by beautiful custom windowtreatments, Davina was surprised to find a lack of options to choose from whenshe was decorating her own Manhattan apartment. When she turned to localupholstery shops, she found they were incredibly expensive and also requiredmonths-long lead times. On the other hand, big box retailers only offeredstandard sizes that were often poor quality. Rather than choosing either ofthese less-than-desirable options, she decided to use her previous experiencefrom working in the New York fashion industry to create her own custom windowtreatments. From this experience, she created and launched Wovn Home inSeptember 2019, offering designer-quality custom window treatments at anaccessible price point.
Wovn Home’s fabrics are made of luxurious linens sourced from premium textile millsin Belgium, while the patterns are designed exclusively for Wovn and screenprinted in Los Angeles. The brand’s drapes, shades and pillows are produced inNorth Carolina through family owned workrooms that have generations of experience and knowledge in theindustry to ensure a quality product. Through Wovn Home, Davina hopes to enableconsumers and designers alike to create beautifully customized spaces that complementand reflect their own style and preferences.

I am back and, I will be slightly pivoting the message. Racism is an important part of the fibers of this country. While I will still discuss design...I will also address yt supremacy as it is designed into the fibers of this country. While I am a proud American...I am also disappointed with the death grip that yt folks have on their privilege. This is NOT an attack (although it may FEEL like it) but what it is, is an observation on casual racism.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
Here are a few questions that I had for Amy:
What is my “why?”
I am a creative person and a business owner and I understand the necessity and the difficulties of communicating your own story well. Given my background in editorial, I felt I could demystify and simplify what it means to be “press ready" from that perspective, which is just one perspective but an important one when trying to get your message out there!
Who is my clientele?
Mainly interior designers. Increasingly small manufacturers and brands in the interiors industry. The communications component that is now so closely bound to business continues to express itself in new ways within the design community, whether with showrooms, design centers, or large design markets.
How to be “pitch perfect”?
First, understand that writers and editors look for the special in your work, a point of view. You can learn what it means to communicate that in my book, Recipe for Press: Designer Edition.
But in a nutshell, pitching requires clarity, reliability, consistency and reciprocity. It is a process that takes time and valuing the process of creating relationships within the design community.
Elevator pitch in three seconds.
You be you, with conviction! I treasure people’s story. I always have.

In Anne Hepfer’s world, a home is a complex reflection of who you are, and the people, places and ideas that matter most. For this, her first, book, the acclaimed designer explores the power of a stylish and soul-nourishing refuge of one’s own. Drawing inspiration from influences as wide-ranging as travel, music, food and drink, fashion, and nature, Hepfer shares her process and opens the doors to the masterful spaces she has crafted for both international clients and her own family. Filled with exuberant color and meditative reflections, MOOD is an ever-evolving journey through the seven key emotions a brilliantly designed home should evoke: happy, relaxed, energized, cozy, sexy, tranquil, and nostalgic.
Liz Lidgett's passion for art allowed her to see that competent art consulting for private companies and corporations was a need that wasn’t being filled. With that in mind, she began her art consultation business, Adore Your Walls, in 2013. Since then, her business has grown and she recognized once again that online and national consulting – the type that exists for furniture and interior design – was completely absent for the world of art and has expanded her services, including a gallery space. With her developed expertise, Adore Your Walls has evolved into her new brand: Liz Lidgett Gallery + Design. Within the rebrand, Liz continues to consult, partner with artists and regularly contribute to design publications across the country.

Todd Raymond, principal of the firm, founded the studio in April of 2020. In this episode, I talk about failure and supporting women. Both are SUPER important in life and I want to provide some perspective to ease your anxiety. Failure is wonderful! It allows you to know what is NOT working and that you need to redirect on how you are going to move in a different way.
Women supporting women can happen. We just need to be honest about why it is so important...is it because you are looking to get something or are you REALLY about watching women win.

Michelle began her journey in 2008 when she was the sole designer. Now, she has expanded to two full-time designers and a host of powerful relationships to the trade. There’s a special chemistry when they all get together. You’ll feel the playful, creative energy and laser-sharp attention to detail we bring to the table. Focused and unfussy, her team loves to say they take their projects seriously, but never themselves.

Today's episode I talk about kindness. People are treating each other without humanity & respect.
I want you to do a kindness for someone without expectation. I want you to do a kindness for someone because it will make their day.
I dare you to take the challenge!
Believe it or not, I was raised on a farm in NJ taking care of over 20 horses. From that upbringing, I learned many lessons that are still very much a part of me today. The value of hard work, ethics, showing up on time, doing what you say you are going to do, attention to detail, the power of please and thank you and the notion that you always leave something better than you found it are ingrained in everything I do.
I am fascinated with classic silhouettes and beautifully crafted pieces and love to combine classic styling with more modern clean lines. I have always been inspired by the designs of the 1950s, which were modern, clean, comfortable, interesting and timeless. These traits can be seen in all my designs.

Today's episode is entitled..."Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover." I recently was sourcing fabric from a local rep and per usual, the following questions ALWAYS occur; "how much?" "What is the stock?" And if you don't have it in stock..."when will it come in?" These are run of the mill questions, I don't care even if you have a client that has "no budget." Newsflash, EVERYONE has a number; even if they don't tell you. So I asked how much and the response was..."you know what they say if you have to ask?" I am sharing this episode to enlighten folks on how to NOT judge a book by its cover. I don't care how I shopped in the past. If I call on you for a particular vendor, please be very aware that I understand the vendors prices as I have done my due diligence. This happens too often in this industry with people who act as gatekeepers to keep folks out because we don't look a certain way or speak or have the right pedigree. Beauty is for ALL...not a chosen few.

Hi there! It's me and I am back! I have taken some time off to be silent. I do this when life is overwhelming and I feel disconnected. It is important to take time out for yourself and your thoughts. We have to get back to learning how to be bored; there are so many distractions out there that imposter syndrome, insecurities, etc. can creep in and take over.
I am challenging you to be silent. I want you to take time to hear, do and say nothing. I want you to get back to the dreamer, the one who belly laughs, the child that found joy in discovering. It is time to tap into who you REALLY are!

Living in the moment is SO important! I was for sure that Covid-19 taught the world such valuable lessson of slowing down. But now, everyone is over staying home & forgetting the VALUE of time! Time with family. Time with friends. Time with ones thoughts. I watched folks learn to LOVE the slower pace, it forced them to lean into taking life in as oppose to blowing through it. I want to challenge folks to soak up EVERY minute of their lives & TRULY FEEL each moment. Life is NOT short. Life is LONG! Make it count!

We can’t emphasize enough the importance we place on fit—in both personality and style. We focus on quality over quantity, partnering on projects that reflect our values and our soulful aesthetic. While we listen to the architecture of the house, our process is very much client-driven, focusing on function and your style preferences. We aim to add a tailor made feel to your home. Staying small and intentional is the goal of our studio.
Values are important to us—while we strive for uniqueness, we look for items that will last. We also honor and believe in true craftsmanship and love having the opportunity to source from smaller makers. We love to tell a story through our sourcing. We use vintage pieces whenever we can to lean into our values of sustainability and quality.

Stephanie believes tht good esign is not embodied in a specific design style. Good design is the careful consideration of scale and proportion; the study of light and color. It tells of the old while embracing the new. It reflects a life, YOUR life. And every interior space, just like every life, shoud be one of a kind.

This is a special episode to discuss true commitment when it comes to anti-racist work. I am watching folks check boxes like it is a to do list. I am here to tell you that it is NOT! This is a life long commitment of unlearning raciscm as well as looking at your privilege under a magnifying lens. It is not enought to attend a rally or write a check to a black organization, it is way more than that! My question to you is, "are you REALLY committed?" It looks like you want recognition for your performance.

With degrees in both psychology and interior design, principal designer Michelle Dirkse’s unique training allows her to understand both the psyche and the artistic foundation of the design process. After purchasing and remodeling her first condo in 2004 Michelle decided to pivot from a career in social work to focus on her creative side. Following a few years gaining industry experience, she launched her eponymous firm in 2013, employing her cognitive research abilities to discover creative meaning and analytical solutions in every project along the way. Norma Kamali has been in the fashion industry for over 50 years and is known for her innovative designs. She designed the Sleeping Bag Coat on a camping trip in the seventies, as well as multi-style jersey dresses. In 1973 her designs were referred to as ‘vintage of the future’ and are, in fact, part of her line today in washable, easy-care fabrics. Her swimwear has made a global influence for over forty years. The Parachute Collection is in several notable museums and is still evolving as part of her collection today.
In 1980 Norma introduced her sweats collection that became the forerunner of what is today called Active and Athleisure Wear. In the mid-nineties she created the NK ‘try before you buy’ website and was the first designer to have a store on eBay. During this time, she continued her exploration of alternative, healthy lifestyle practices; a search that began after the loss of her dear friends to AIDS.
After 9/11 Norma opened the Wellness Café; a curated collection of personal care and food products that support the immune system. The Wellness Café hosted talks and events featuring experts in the wellness arena. Teas, meditation, and classes were held every day at 6 pm.
In 2007 Norma collaborated with Walmart in a three-year licensee partnership where she created a collection of timeless styles all $20 and under. According to Norma, this was one of the most inspired and exciting experiences of her career.
As a result of the successful collection on Walmart.com, Norma was determined to transform her company to be exclusively e-commerce. Her current distribution network is to all major e-commerce players as well as a selection of specialty stores throughout America and Europe.
In 2016 Norma Kamali received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the CFDA to add to her numerous awards from the fashion industry.
In 2019 NORMALIFE was launched under the concept of a healthy lifestyle. NORMALIFE is democratic and inclusive for men and women of all ages, skin color, and type. The first launch was a skin line of timeless, safe ingredients and the packaging was developed with a sustainability focus.
I AM INVINCIBLE, Norma’s healthy lifestyle guide on aging with power, was released February 2021. Norma continues to live through her purpose in life of empowering women.

I am returning to share some thoughts on vetting folks. It is important to invest in your business, but it is more important to know whom you are giving your money to. Also, it is great to learn as much as you can, but it is equally important to implement what you have learned!

Stemper & Associates customizes accounting, project management, as well as growth and development services to each designer’s unique needs . Today on the podcast I am sharing what I learned at the Business of Home Future of Home conference. It was phenomenal!
If I can share one thing with you, it would be to attend the conferences that will help grow your business. Do not look at it like it is an unnecessary expense, what it actually is, is an opportunity for YOU to grow your business & invest in yourself. The money you put out will return a thousand times if you implement what you learn. Learn to invest in your dream and truly give it ALL you got! I promise you, it will be worth it.
This is a message to faux ally's every where. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable and unlearn the entitlement & hatred that upholds white supremacy. STOP acting shock when you get it wrong. STOP with the hypocrisy. DO BETTER. That's it.

After spending a decade in publishing firms from Conde Nast, Time Inc. to Hachette, Lauren’s focus turned to textiles in 2009. While not formerly trained in textiles, her love and passion for the craft grew organically from early on. As an avid collector of handwoven vintage textiles, she knew that some day it would take possession of her and to this day, one of her guiding design principle is to honor the hand loom whenever possible.
Always inspired by nature and global cultures, driven by love of fiber and craft, with a nod to the past, LAUREN HWANG NEW YORK offers a new modern luxury textile collection steeped in ethnic heritage with simplicity, the natural and understated elegance.

Everything starts in our studio, where we paint sketches, hand-carve blocks or hand-cut stencils before transforming each pattern into an original fabric design.
Screen printing historically evolved from stenciling, and we likewise progress from analog methods to modern techniques, hand-screening our fabrics on 100% Belgian linen and digitally printing our wallpapers on vellum or grass cloth.
We see through the lens of California’s landscape, which inspires our spectrum of painterly colors. We’re based in Los Angeles, where we print our fabrics, and we’re represented by showrooms across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

TRNK presents PROVENANCED, an exhibition of contemporary designs that reference African, Indigenous, and ancient aesthetics. From the 20th century modernist art movement (i.e Picasso, Matisse, Giacometti) to turn-of-the-century Art Deco design (i.e. Victor Courtray, Pierre Legrain), African and Indigenous works have forever evolved Western design language. Despite this enormous influence, rarely can we collectively speak to the historical significance of these references. Influences have either gone unacknowldeged, or have become abstracted to the point of anonymity.

Brooklyn based designer and artist Rebecca Atwood believes in the art of making. I believe that how you get to a finished product is just as important as the final design. Each step of my process, from first sketch to production techniques to our shipping methods, is so important. I don’t believe in perfection, but I do ask myself, “How can I do things better?” frequently. I like to think you can see that when you purchase one of our pieces. And I like to think that our process is part of the reason you can feel truly good about bringing our pieces into your home.

Chicago native Kabria Cummings has interior design in her DNA. Her parents, Sam and Ella Cummings were quite the dynamic decorating duo. They scoured thrift stores for items that they could breathe new life into. They made drapery, reupholstered furniture, gardened, collected global art and her father even built his own furniture. Additionally, Kabria was influenced by her cousin Thea Nerissa Barnes, who collected artisanal items while traveling the world as a professional dancer with Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey.
Decorating and collecting art from her travels became part-time hobbies while Kabria established a career in graphic design and marketing. However, the deaths of her parents two months apart and other life-altering events that included the end of a long-term relationship, surgery, and the loss of her job of 10 ½ years, prompted her to reevaluate things. Kabria knew that she wanted to pursue her passion for interior decorating full-time. In 2016, she founded Global Attic LLC.
Global Attic sells a carefullycurated collection of one-of-a-kind home décor sourced and sometimes designed by Kabria. The statement pieces transform bland living spaces, convey individuality, and help to support the global community. They are handmade by artisans from around the world using natural and sustainable materials in places such as Africa, Indonesia, India & Haiti.

With a background in painting and conceptual art, Brian Paquette brings a singular point of view to the Seattle and San Francisco interior design scene. Rather than following a particular style, he draws inspiration from a variety of sources: architecture, travel, and the natural world, to name a few. For Brian, interior design is not something sterile or static; it’s a living extension of art, meant to be touched, used and admired.
That mindset is at the heart of Brian Paquette Interiors. We are a high end design firm and we build custom spaces that are at once open and intimate, grounded yet light. Our Seattle interior design team works through a close, collaborative process, creating homes that reflect our clients’ identity, history and aspirations. We partner with local craftsmen to ensure every element in our projects is unique and carefully considered, with its own story that adds to the greater whole.
Founded in 2009, Brian Paquette Interiors provides full-service interior design. Our Seattle and San Francisco interiors have been featured in Architectural Digest, Dwell, Luxe Magazine and more. We also regularly work in Los Angeles, New York City, British Columbia and beyond.
In addition to interior design, we offer furniture, textiles and décor through Brian Paquette at Home. Our online shop is yet another extension of Brian’s personal aesthetic. Experience it for yourself.

My passion for decoding spaces is the culmination of nearly a decade of retail visual merchandising and freelance marketing, sprinkled with a lifetime of experiences. Using my background of space design and storytelling, I took my real life lessons and launched an online interior design service. My love of design has evolved into a destination for inspiration centered around my blog, video, and social media content.
For years, I worked as a self-proclaimed “silent salesperson” — a retail visual merchandiser translating brands’ visions into something tangible and transactional. My marketing degree taught me how to "sell" brands, my retail job taught me how to "sell" lifestyles, and my day-to-day life taught me how to bring them together to tell a story!
WHEN I MADE THE NATURAL TRANSITION FROM PRODUCT PRESENTATION INTO INTERIOR DESIGN, I WAS SUBSTITUTING FIXTURES FOR FURNITURE & APPAREL FOR ACCENTS, AS ANOTHER FORM OF STORYTELLING. https://albieknows.design/

Drew McGukin tackles the interior design world with a unique level of energy, great pace, and integrity. He is known for a touch of the unexpected, combined with beautiful textures and bold patterns that vibrate with a perfect amount of sophistication, warmth, innovation, style, and approachability. Graduating from the New York School of Interior Design in May 2010, Drew kicked off the lead designer in his own New York-based firm in October 2010.
While Classically trained, this self-proclaimed pattern-addict has fast become one of the leading contemporary designers in today’s market. “I’ve never been a wallflower,” says Drew. “Neither are my interiors.” In 2019, Introspective Magazine described Drew as designing “with a commanding intelligence and an ability to articulate his ideas sharply and clearly – a rare quality among younger designers, who often struggle to describe their work. And his aesthetic is anything but recessive. His style is forthright and high impact, characterized by strong and graphic patterns deployed with confidence and skill while avoiding eyeball-straining shades that can be visually overwhelming.”
The International Furnishings & Design Association quickly recognized Drew’s Signature style and named him a Rising Star. Drew has sat on various designer advisory councils including the ASID Board of Directors and the New York Design Center’s Access to Design Referral Network. He has also engaged as a creative consultant for renowned industry giants like Cosentino, Delta Facet Company, and Monogram. His work is regularly featured through traditional and nontraditional media, and a favorite across numerous social channels. His portfolio remains a standout on heavy-hitting digital design platforms like 1stdibs and Houzz – a nod to his extraordinary online following. In 2018 Drew launched his first capsule furnishings collection with Crate & Barrel.
Drew McGukin Interiors design innovative interiors across the United States that tell a story by combining bold choices and rich textures to create subtle, sophisticated designs that require you take notice, then relax and enjoy.

Partnering her education in fine art with her many years of sales experience, Melinda created the Vale London to provide exquisite textiles and wallpapers to the luxury interiors market.

Welcome to my final installment of Race in America. I am hopeful that America is FINALLY moving in the right direction. We must keep our foot on the gas! We must re-write laws that benefit ALL, not just a few. Please know that this is not a check the box situation. THIS is a lifestyle commitment. This is a change in behavior. This is using your privileged platform for POC. I am optimistic. Please don’t let me down. Do the work. Do it as if your life depends upon it...because it does! Now that you know better. DO BETTER.
Welcome to part 2 of a 3 part series on Racism in America. Normally, I discuss design but in light of what has transpired in the last few weeks, you are going to hear what life is like in America for people of color.
I want to thank you for joining me on this journey. I also want to tell you to keep an open mind and heart, as that is how we will HEAL! This is about moving forward. This is about having an open honest dialogue and forcing America to look at the under belly of racism and all of its ugliness.
Together we can conquer hate and those who this way.
When you know better, you do better!
Today's podcast guest is ME! I am discussing what we are ALL experiencing after witnessing the privilege of Amy Cooper and the murder of George Floyd. For the next three episodes, I want to talk about the Design Perspective of Racism in America.
Buckle up!
Texas native, Peter Sandel is principal & founder of Peter Sandel Design, LLC a boutique design firm based in Downtown Manhattan.
Peter’s portfolio is not tied to any one signature style but highlights a range of approaches unified in thoughtful floor plans, unique furnishings and dedication to exceptional craftsmanship.
Although interior design has been a natural and lifelong passion, it wasn't the obvious career choice. After a decade working as a Washington lobbyist; it was a timely transition to New York, coupled with the tragic loss of his Mother to breast cancer that compelled him to seek change.
Sandel subsequently started his career in design working for world-renowned architect Peter Marino. He later worked alongside Dallas' most sought after interior designers while simultaneously starting his own firm. He obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Baylor University and later attended the New York School of Interior Design.

Sarah Von Dreele has been the creative director of Onethread Design, Inc., a New York-based design consultancy, which she founded in 2003. Launching her eponymous brand of wallcoverings in 2019, Sarah’s hand-painted aesthetic quickly gained traction in the interior design field, garnering attention from designers and publications internationally. What began as a simple creative exercise at the end of the day quickly evolved into a collection of surface designs, painted exclusively in gouache. Her latest works explore the integration of imperfection and repetition to create rich patterns. The abstracted floral and geometric forms are ethereal and calm, lending themselves to a variety of applications for the curated home.

After 10 years building Kammi Reiss Handbags to a successful brand of custom bags, Kammi was drawn back into the world of interiors by a hotel commission. She felt she had returned to her passion and moved back to designing interiors exclusively. Kammi loves excellent craftsmanship, welcoming environments, and designs that endure.

Virginia founded Toledo Geller in 2006 after recognizing a need in the luxury residential market for a firm with specialized knowledge in both the design and construction process. Formally trained in interior design, she also gained invaluable experience working along side her father, a general contractor, on construction sites. A native of Brooklyn, Virginia is a mother who loves historical fiction and entertaining in her 1920’s Craftsman style New Jersey home, which she is constantly updating.
The experience of renovating a children’s hospital playroom sparked Jessica’s decision to switch careers from social work to interior design. Her intuitive design sensibility is both innate and learned from experience in the field, and she gravitates towards the perfectly imperfect—such as introducing a color that seems “off” but magically completes the design. A mother of three, Jessica moved to Essex Fells within a year of renovating her 1850s Hoboken townhouse to embark on transforming a 1920s center hall colonial into the perfect cozy home for spending time with her family.

I am here to tell you that paint is NOT the first thing you do. Folks move into a new house & are gifted with a paint consultation for their home. They have individuals come in and advise them on paint, but they do not have any furniture!
Recently I sat down with a few designer's and we discussed all things business. One topic in particular had my complete attention and it is what is commonly known as trade discount. If you speak to clients, a few will consider it "double dipping", but is it really? Aren't we running a business? Why are designer's asked to share?
Today I share about the showhouse that I am currently involved with. It is exciting and scary at the same time. If you get an opportunity to do a showhouse, do it!

There are 6 important steps that are a requirement when you are in business. There is so much more to running a business than having a logo & colors. In this episode, I discuss the 6 components that are essential to you moving the needle on your business.
Do you consider that your home is therapeutic? It is important that how you design your home replenishes your spirit. So many folks take decorating & designing their home lightly. It is your safe haven where you rear your family & spend time with loved ones. In this episode, I want you to look at why you should be hiring a designer with new eyes.
What is it that a client thinks a designer does? Are you setting clear expectations when you interview a potential client? Do you ask smart questions that will help a potential client understand the design process? It is important to clarify your services and if it is a job you cannot do, then suggest a designer bestie that can do the job.
We will talk ALL things design! And I’m talking about getting perspective from the Architect, Interior Designer, the Trades people & the client. We will talk what to expect when working folks in the industry.
