In this thought-provoking episode of "And If Love Remains", hosts Mike Leavitt and Joe Wolverton dive deep into the timeless wisdom found in Cato's Letter No. 19, written by Thomas Gordon in 1721. The letter discusses the powerful influence of popular affection and antipathy towards particular men, and how this shapes politics and government.Mike and Joe engage in a lively discussion, drawing fascinating parallels between the stately tyrants described in the letter and modern day political leaders. They explore how the delusions and imaginations of the masses are exploited, leading to a deluded populace cheerfully submitting to tyranny - as long as it's perpetrated by "their guy".The hosts argue persuasively that the signs described in the letter - leaders aggrandizing themselves while mocking and impoverishing the people - are clear evidence that liberty is not truly established in America today. They issue a rallying cry to break free from partisan delusions, pursue real education and virtue, and follow in the footsteps of the founding fathers who boldly stood against tyranny. This episode is a must-listen for anyone concerned about the state of freedom and politics in modern America. Mike and Joe's witty rapport and incisive analysis cast new light on centuries-old wisdom, making it startlingly relevant to our times. #CatosLetters #Liberty #Tyranny #Delusion #FoundingFathers #Politics #Government #Virtue #Education #Constitution #Patriotism #Freedom

Key Points of the Discussion 1. Democratic Despotism: The conversation starts with a critique of contemporary society's drift towards what is termed "Democratic despotism," where the government heavily regulates every aspect of life, essentially defining the totality of individual existence within a framework of omnipresent rules and regulations.2. Totalitarianism and Liberty: They argue that modern society lives under a form of totalitarianism disguised as democracy, where every facet of life is regulated by the government, which they claim is the antithesis of true liberty. Thanks for reading And If Love Remains! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.Subscribed3. Historical Perspectives on Tyranny: The discussion delves into historical texts and authors (e.g., Étienne de La Boétie, Alexis de Tocqueville, James Madison) to draw parallels between past and present forms of government, emphasizing how historical insights can illuminate current political and social conditions.4. The Role of Education: A significant portion of the conversation is dedicated to the critical role of education in shaping individuals' perceptions of freedom and government. They lament the current state of education, which they view as indoctrination rather than enlightenment, leading to a populace that is unable to conceive of true liberty.5. Virtue and Governance: The podcast highlights the importance of virtue, both in individuals and in leaders, for the functioning of a free society. It suggests that without virtue, society is susceptible to tyranny, as individuals without self-governance cannot effectively govern a nation.6. Self-Governance and Responsibility: The discussion emphasizes the concept of self-governance, both on a personal and societal level. It argues for a society where individuals are responsible for their actions and governance is a reflection of the collective virtue and wisdom of its people.7. Critique of Modern Society: Throughout the podcast, there is a continuous critique of modern society's loss of liberty, virtue, and responsibility, leading to a passive acceptance of tyranny under the guise of security and convenience.8. Call to Action: The podcast concludes with a call to action, urging individuals to educate themselves and their offspring outside the prevailing system, in hopes of cultivating a generation that values and understands liberty, thereby capable of resisting tyranny.ConclusionThe podcast "And if Love Remains" featuring Mike Leavitt and Joe Wolverton provides a thought-provoking analysis of contemporary society's drift towards totalitarianism, framed within a historical and philosophical context. By drawing on historical texts and theories, they critique the current educational system, emphasize the importance of virtue and self-governance, and call for a return to genuine liberty. The conversation serves as a call to action, urging listeners to seek education and virtue as the foundations of a free society.#LibertyAndTyranny #DemocraticDespotism #HistoricalPerspective #EducationForFreedom #VirtueAndGovernance #SelfGovernance #CritiqueOfModernSociety #CallToActionForLiberty #liberty #tyranny #greatbooks #realhistory #america #freedom

A fun thing for Halloween - I'll be reciting some great Halloween poems. Our final poem is The Halloween Poem by Pumpkin Rot. #poem #halloween #hauntedstories #poetry #emilydickinson #literature The Halloween PoemPumpkin Rot He ran out of work and rushed to the store. Then sped to his home and shot through his door. With pumpkins and candy and black cardboard cats. With cornstalks and devils and tiny witch hats.He strung purple lights and soft orange crepe. He hung paper bats with two-sided tape.He gutted the pumpkins, the best in the bin.He stabbed each some eyes, a nose, and a grin.He rushed to the lawn – The Front Yard of Fear. And set up his zombies he built through the year.He constructed his graveyard with tombstones of foam,And placed a cloth ghost in its gloomy crypt home.He dressed his new scarecrow with a hat and a coat,And staked in a post for a sign that he wrote:Beware Ye!Go Back! Not Safe!He laughed a small laugh and smiled with pride. Then scattered some leaves and ran back inside. He heated up cider and warmed up some pie.He colored white frosting with goblin-green dye.He filled giant bowls with popcorn and treats,Toffee and chocolates and soft sugared sweets. He changed from his suit and slicked back his hair.He donned a black cloak and sat in his chair. He popped in his fangs and gave them a bite. Then smiled sharp teeth and waited for night. Now that his planning and hard work was done,He listened for sounds of laughter and fun!He imagined kids running in white ghostly sheets.Hobos and monsters on shadowy streets! With masks made of plastic and rubber and paint. He thought he heard children distant and faint! He pictured their parents, excited and proud,Escorting small creatures, eager and loud! They’d spot his great house, then gather and flock. They’d block up the street and clog up the block! They’d line up for hours for a look and a treat. He thought he heard sounds of scurrying feet! ***It was only dry leaves swept along by the wind.He breathed out a sigh, his proud smile thinned. His dreams and his hopes of Halloween fameBlew away with the leaves. Nobody came.

For decades Diane Taraz has been writing her own songs and breathing new life into traditional ones. Her elegant voice brings out the essence of whatever style she presents, be it folk, jazz, blues, or standards. She plays Taylor and Santa Cruz guitars, and keeps stretching the limits of her lap dulcimer, taking it to unexpected places where its quirky charm shines.
Steeped in history, Diane creates programs that use the music of an era to show the inner lives of people who lived long ago. Women, especially, left behind few records of their existence, but the songs they used to speed their work, sing a child to sleep, or ease an aching heart show us their minds and hearts. Diane is on the Scholarly Advisory Board of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, based in New York City, and brings her programs to museums, universities, libraries, and historic houses throughout New England.
Robert A. Perry, Executive Director of the Charles River Museum of Industry in Waltham, Mass., says, "Diane does an extraordinary job weaving together history and performing arts through storytelling and beautiful song. Her meticulous research, musicianship, engaging presence, sense of humor, period costumes, and professionalism allow her audience to lose themselves in a delightful experience that transports them to another time. New England historical sites and history buffs are incredibly fortunate to have Diane Taraz in our midst to bring our past to life!"
Diane directs the Lexington Historical Society's Colonial Singers, a group of music-loving reenactors. She researches and arranges songs, teaches them to the group, and leads them in various Society events in Lexington, including Patriot's Day and July 4 programs. She has produced two CDs for the group, and in 2017 and 2018 directed three presentations of a play from 1728, The Beggar's Opera, which she adapted. Mike and James talk about the hobby of book collecting.
James Russell is a book historian focused on print culture in the Late Medieval and Early Modern periods and the history of reading. He holds a doctorate in Medieval and Renaissance Studies with a concentration in the History of the Book from Durham University in the United Kingdom and is an instructor at Rio Salado College in Phoenix. He has also worked in the rare book trade. James is interested in the ways that early readers made use of the new medium of print as evidenced by their handwritten annotations, or marginalia. These notes allow us to look over readers' shoulders and see how they interpreted what they read. His doctoral project looked at a late fifteenth century Venetian dream narrative and examined how early modern audiences interpreted the text as an allegory of alchemy. He is currently working towards his certification as a rare book appraiser.

Coach Johnson has been involved in martial arts training for over 30 years. His journey began with the art of Taekwondo, eventually earning a 4th Degree Black Belt. Shortly after beginning his training, he desired a more realistic avenue of training and began competing in full contact Kickboxing. His fascination of realistic training continued after seeing Mixed Martial Arts competitions and hungered to further his education.
He began Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 1995 and began to share them with his students. Still committed to learning even more forms of realistic training, he was certified to teach Krav Maga in 2001 and has been a huge proponent of the Israeli System ever since. In 2021, Coach Johnson received an additional black belt with instructor certification under Itay Gil with Protect Krav Maga.
He earned his first certification as a personal trainer in 1995 and began creating fitness programs using Kickboxing in 1997.
In 2004, he went on to be a certified instructor in Muay Thai style Kickboxing under Kru Mark in San Diego. He began coaching MMA competitors in 2007 and relishes his role as a coach and instructor even more than as a participant.

I had a great time talking to Kris Rodgers, singer, songwriter, pianist, and front man for Kris Rodgers and the Dirty Gems. A super cool guy with great stories, Kris is an incredible musician. A pro's pro. His voice is soulful and powerful and he plays a mean piano. If you love the great era of songwriters, or amazing fun, feel good music, you will dig Kris Rodgers And The Dirty Gems! Check out his latest album Still Dirty, released by Wicked Cool Records - it brings the ROCK back in Rock and Roll!

Jordan Peterson could easily be called "The Most Interesting Man In The World." He is the sceptic's Sunday School Teacher, reinvigorating the need for religion in the minds of millions who thought even the idea of God is passé. He has been the pastor to many encouraging them to "clean their room" because, like Moses' serpent, that simple act will change their lives. Billy Graham would smile at his impact. Yet Peterson has not publicly declared himself a Christian or even a believer in God. He is quite an enigma.
Today we talk to Matthew R. Petrusek, co-author with Christopher Kaczor of Jordan Peterson, God, and Christianity. We explore Peterson's philosophy, why he is effective, and some of the gaps that Christianity can provide.

He lectures widely on theological, philosophical, and ethical issues in English and Spanish, and has served as an on-air analyst for Noticias MundoFox and CNN en Español.
As concert halls begin to open again we have the opportunity to chat with a great friend of the program, Thomas Rosenkranz. We talk about performing again as well as a myriad of other subjects. Most of them musical. Joined again by Elias-Axel Pettersson.
Co-hosted with Elias-Axel Pettersson, Thomas Posen is at the forefront of new and exciting scholarship discussing Beethoven. He is wonderful because he can make technical ideas understandable. I think understanding these concepts will help everyone appreciate the giant composer.

I am incredibly grateful for the work Jeffrey A. Tucker has done recently. While many in the liberty movement either justified or worse, ignored the unauthorized mandates, lockdowns, and closures by government officials, he has been steadfast in his liberal principles while humble in seeking the best information about Corona.

After Humanity: A Guide to C.S. Lewis's The Abolition of Man is the go to resource for Lewis's great philosophical work. Today we talk about it with author Michael Ward.
Get your copy here:
https://www.wordonfire.org/humanity/#ward
MICHAEL WARD, a Catholic priest, is Senior Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford, and Professor of Apologetics at Houston Baptist University. He is the author of the best-selling and award-winning Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis, co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis, and presenter of the BBC television documentary The Narnia Code. On the fiftieth anniversary of Lewis’s death, Michael Ward unveiled a permanent national memorial to him in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey, London.
After Humanity is a guide to one of C.S. Lewis’s most widely admired but least accessible works, The Abolition of Man, which originated as a series of lectures on ethics that he delivered during the Second World War.
These lectures tackle the thorny question of whether moral value is objective or not. When we say something is right or wrong, are we recognizing a reality outside ourselves, or merely reporting a subjective sentiment? Lewis addresses the matter from a purely philosophical standpoint, leaving theological matters to one side. He makes a powerful case against subjectivism, issuing an intellectual warning that, in our “post-truth” twenty-first century, has even more relevance than when he originally presented it.
Lewis characterized The Abolition of Man as “almost my favourite among my books,” and his biographer Walter Hooper has called it “an all but indispensable introduction to the entire corpus of Lewisiana.” In After Humanity, Michael Ward sheds much-needed light on this important but difficult work, explaining both its general academic context and the particular circumstances in Lewis’s life that helped give rise to it, including his front-line service in the trenches of the First World War.
After Humanity contains a detailed commentary clarifying the many allusions and quotations scattered throughout Lewis’s argument. It shows how this resolutely philosophical thesis fits in with his other, more explicitly Christian works. It also includes a full-color photo gallery, displaying images of people, places, and documents that relate to The Abolition of Man, among them Lewis’s original “blurb” for the book, which has never before been published.

Joseph Dewey is a writer, a thinker, a photographer, and an artist. Actually, Joseph Dewey’s art isn’t all that great, and his photographs are all too earthy and not photoshopped enough. His internationally acclaimed efforts led to the world premiere award-winning release of over two hours of ‘unknown’ performances by Lipatti, among them piano concertos by Liszt and Bartok.
Mark’s articles about Lipatti for International Piano Quarterly, International Piano, and Classical Record Collector magazines, as well as liner notes for the labels APR, archiphon, and Opus Kura, have debunked myths surrounding the life and art of this legendary musician, and he has received support for his work from some of the Rumanian biographers, diplomats, and producers who have worked for decades in publicizing this musician’s legacy. Mark has also written in both International Piano and Classic Record Collector magazines about the great French pianist Marcelle Meyer, the muse of Le Groupe des Six in 1920s Paris who additionally worked with Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky.
Mark has given lectures at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, the Leschetitzky Society in Tokyo, and the San Francisco Conservatory, speaking about Great Historical Recordings in general and about Dinu Lipatti specifically, and was featured on WNYC radio in New York City in 1992 for the premiere broadcast of some rare Lipatti recordings. In September 2010, Mark co-chaired the panel discussion after the screening of a documentary about Dinu Lipatti at the Besancon International Music Festival, and the following month he opened the 2010 Great Romantics Festival with a presentation entitled “Schumann—The Poet of the Piano” for the bicentennial of Schumann’s birth. In 2016 the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest sponsored a trip for Mark to visit Romania and lecture about Dinu Lipatti in conjunction with a new Lipatti website; Mark additionally appeared on Romanian TV and radio on this trip. He also presented at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Vienna in 2017 to mark the beginning of Lipatti’s centenary that year.
Mark’s international research has led to meetings with many musical luminaries, among them Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Yehudi Menuhin, Hugues Cuenod, Franziska Ackermann (widow of conductor Otto Ackermann), Stephen Hough (who has referred to Mark’s blog in his own for The Telegraph), Idil Biret, the family of Marcelle Meyer, Lake Como Piano Academy director William Nabore, and renowned artist manager Jacques Leiser.
Mark has most recently written in International Piano about the evolution of Alfred Cortot’s playing as heard through his recordings, in addition to a centenary tribute to Dinu Lipatti. Previous articles in International Piano include features about the challenges facing young pianists as related by Jacques Leiser, an interview with British-Canadian pianist Valerie Tryon, and biographical articles about Dinu Lipatti and Marcelle Meyer. Mark has also published an extensive 9-page article about Dinu Lipatti for Classical Recordings Quarterly, and for Clavier Companion magazine has produced an article about recording producer Walter Legge, a feature on the ‘rediscovered Romantic’ pianist Jascha Spivakovsky, and interviews with Stephen Hough and Livia Rev. Mark continues his research into the life and recordings of Dinu Lipatti and has prepared a commemorative website devoted to the artist at dinulipatti.com .
Mark has been a regular guest lecturer in both Sara Davis Buechner’s and Corey Hamm’s piano literature classes at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, and he guest lectured at Manhattan School of Music in April 2017. He is available for writing projects such as CD liner notes, articles, and interviews, as well as lecture-demonstrations on a variety of piano-related topics. Amongst his repertoire:

Sometimes we can look at other couples, other families, other lives and wonder why it is all so easy for them while it is so difficult for us. It would be easy to make that mistake meeting Mike and Kirsten.
Love is not an easy journey. Not for anyone.
This is a story of hope, love, and healing. I don't want to give any of it away because it is really so good. I just want to say if there is someone struggling with their relationships or even struggling with the concept of love I hope that person listens to this story. Listen and share. What did the Founding Fathers have in mind when they conceived of a land of liberty? Why were they willing to do what they did, pledging their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor for the cause of Independence? How do we draw on that spirit again? The Constitution: Every issue, every time. No exceptions, no excuses.
Politics is fickle. My guy wins and all is well. Your guy wins and it's the end of the world. It's been that way in the US for over 200 years. The genius of The US Constitution is it provided the structure for states to rally together when necessary but maintain their sovereignty at all times. It was a joy having a conversation with Michael Maharrey, the National Communications Director of The Tenth Amendment Center. Unlike fickle politics, The Tenth Amendment Center is equally hated by Republicans and Democrats. Enjoy the episode.

This was a treat! Dr. Pettersson and I interview the wonderful pianist Prof. Daniel Shapiro. Prof. Shapiro was kind enough to spend a few minutes discussing his THIRD complete cylcle of the Beethoven piano sonatas. We talk on a range of subjects and celebrate the greatness of Beethoven's work.
DANIEL SHAPIRO continues to gain recognition as a leading interpreter of Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, and Brahms, and as a teacher and coach at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has given critically acclaimed performances across the United States, in Brazil, Britain, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Korea, and China, at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. This season he performs his third complete cycle of the 32 Beethoven piano sonatas; previous live performances of all the sonatas can be found on this website. His DVDs of all of Schubert's major piano sonatas and his CD of Beethoven’s “Diabelli” Variations have received enthusiastic reviews.
He has taught at CIM for the past twenty-three years, during which time he has become known as an inspiring teacher who helps students achieve profound understanding and develop vivid interpretations of the great masterworks. His students have won important competitions and obtained teaching posts at prestigious universities and schools of music.
As a chamber musician, Shapiro has had the great fortune of collaborating with some of the world’s leading musicians, including Jaime Laredo, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Joseph Silverstein, Cho-Liang Lin, Roberto Diaz, Ronald Leonard, Franklin Cohen and Frank Rosenwein. He has performed regularly with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra. He has also performed with the Cavani, Mirò, Linden and Rossetti Quartets, and has released chamber music CDs on the Harmonia Mundi and ASV labels. His Beethoven sonata collaborations with violinist Jaime Laredo can be found on youtube.com.
His musical scope also includes the study of conducting: he has worked with Daniel Lewis, Victor Yampolsky, Fritz Zweig, and Gustav Meier. He made his conducting debut at sixteen at Tanglewood, and conducted Mozart’s Don Giovanni with the Akron Lyric Opera.
His musicianship has been enhanced and deepened by extensive collaboration with singers: listening to and working with them has been a source of tremendous inspiration. He studied art song with Gwendolyn Koldofsky and opera with Natalie Limonick, and was an opera and art song coach at UCLA.
A native of southern California, Shapiro began the study of piano at the age of six. His teachers included Leon Fleisher, John Perry, Russell Sherman, Joanna Graudan, and Reginald Stewart. He studied at the University of Southern California and at the Peabody Conservatory, where he received his doctorate.
Shapiro is an expert Scrabble player--he is one of the top ranked players in Ohio, having won or placed in several tournaments. He lives with his family in Cleveland Heights.

Eric has worked in social enterprise, theatre, organizational consulting, education, and a range of health capacities. These experiences have brought him into close relationship with people in many walks of life. Is it any surprise that his writings honor those on the edges of life – those who cross the dividing lines in order to find meaningful ways to bring light into dark places? Children have a great deal to teach us about these paths.

In such a short life Frédéric Chopin redefined the expressive possibilities of the piano. Whether in his inventive use of harmonic voicings or his long, flowing, almost unending melodies; his poetic writing challenges the musician and the listener alike.
2020 is the 210th anniversary of Chopin's birth and again I have the privilege of having Dr. Elias-Axel Pettersson on the show. We discuss Chopin and the history of the Romantic Period of music using Chopin's Piano Sonata No.3 in B minor as the platform to discuss.

It's October of 2020 and this month is the the 70th Anniversary of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe's publication. If there is one person on the planet that I could have on the show to talk about this classic C.S. Lewis story, it is Dr. Michael Ward. Fortunately for you, my dear listeners, he was gracious enough to spend the time celebrating with us this tremendous book.
I say this carefully, If you think you know the Narnia series but you are unaware of Michael's work, you don't. His insights will open up a whole new layer of understanding that will enrich your experience and awaken in you the genius of Lewis' "children's stories."
Michael Ward is Senior Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford, and Professor of Apologetics at HBU. He is the author of the award-winning Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis (Oxford University Press) and co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis (Cambridge University Press).
Though based at Blackfriars in Oxford, Dr Ward is also employed as Professor of Apologetics at Houston Baptist University, Texas, teaching one course per semester as part of the online MA program in Christian Apologetics.
On the fiftieth anniversary of Lewis’s death (22 November 2013), Professor Ward unveiled a permanent national memorial to him in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey. He is the co-editor of a volume of commemorative essays marking the anniversary, entitled C.S. Lewis at Poets’ Corner (2016).
Michael Ward presented the BBC television documentary, The Narnia Code (2009), directed and produced by the BAFTA-winning film-maker, Norman Stone. He authored an accompanying book entitled The Narnia Code: C.S. Lewis and the Secret of the Seven Heavens (Tyndale House, USA / Paternoster, UK).
Michael was resident Warden of The Kilns, Lewis’s Oxford home, from 1996 to 1999. He studied English at Oxford, Theology at Cambridge, and has a PhD in Divinity from St Andrews. Further details of his CV are available here.
Dr Ward’s chief claim to fame, however, is that he handed a pair of X-ray spectacles to James Bond in the movie The World Is Not Enough. Here he is next to 007 and Q:

His Teacher of Liberty website, podcast, and youtube channel are great resources for all those who are liberty minded and hope to pass that mindset to the next generation.
I had an exciting conversation with controversial music historian Wim Winters. Wim is an accomplished organist, pianist, harpsicordist, and clavicordist. He rustled a lot of feathers in the music community with his "whole beat" theory of reading historical metronome markings. He is passionate about discovering what composers actually had in mind when they wrote their music.

The late Ralph Berkowitz wrote “…Pettersson is a rare musician who can project his ideas from the piano directly into the hearts and minds of his audience.” He has garnered prizes on the national and international level and has been heard on national radio through KHFM and KUNM.
A Mason & Hamlin Concert Artist, Pettersson has collaborated with numerous musicians, including violinists Krzysztof Zimowski, David Felberg, and Guillaume Tardif, violist Henk Guittart, Cantor Josh Perlman, and tenor Michiel Schrey. In 2008, Pettersson formed Duo Giocoso with French violinist Roland Arnassalon; in 2017, he formed Æterna Sirius with pianist Jessica Yam. Pettersson champions contemporary composers such as Arnaud Allary, Alan Belkin, Baptiste Cathelin, Todd Coleman, Alvin Curran, Drea Pressley Tischhauser, Ben Shemie, and Altin Volaj. Pettersson has three albums on the Axel Records label, featuring works ranging from Bach and Beethoven to Janáček and Vine. He has also cultivated a loyal online following through his website and YouTube channel.
Pettersson is a frequent performer, lecturer, and masterclass teacher throughout the USA, Canada, and Sweden, and is known for being a conscientious, patient, and motivational guide with a methodical, yet holistic and creative approach.
