https://yourpositiveimprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/world-wildlife-we-stnd-with-rangers.png () Wow oh wow!!  Doing this podcast I just meet so many awesome people from all cultures! I’m so impressed with the many positive imprints of Forest for Children organization out of Czech Republic, Europe.  They recruit rad awesome volunteers and they have worldwide support including their membership with the international ranger federation. This organization represents park rangers and park wardens throughout our world. Justice for Nature which is part of Their website is incredible with loads of information. justicefornature.org Justice for Nature/Forest for Children is an independent initiative. Furthermore their vision seeks a balance between human civilization and nature through active preservation of the environment and animals. The current critical state of the environment leads this organization to creating an international vision. This vision opens the door to the wide public to take responsibility and also an active role in saving nature and animal species on the planet Earth. Alena Bendová whom is spokesperson for Forest For Children organization shares Czech Republic's Justice for Nature global initiative.  Former guest, Martin Zeman: https://yourpositiveimprint.com/episodes/philosophies-from-a-czech-vegan-inspired-by-joaquin-phoenix-and-earthlings/ Martin, whom is also from Czech Republic, put me in touch with Alana Bendová.  I was very taken aback at first because some of the photos on their Facebook page were extremely difficult for me to handle. The unjust death of these animals is the reality of poaching and greed.  The rangers employed by this organization risk their lives, like all rangers, in order to preserve our planet's species. It's the reality of an unjust balance between man and nature.  But this can change with positive imprints. https://justicefornature.org (https://justicefornature.org) website in Czech https://justicefornature.org/en/main/ (https://justicefornature.org/en/main/) website in English https://yourpositiveimprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/volunteers.png () https://yourpositiveimprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/rangers.png () https://yourpositiveimprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/rangers-2.png () https://yourpositiveimprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/planetfest.png () https://yourpositiveimprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/plastics.png () https://yourpositiveimprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/alena-photo-acad.png ()

Surrogacy is definitely not for everyone. Not everybody is able to be a surrogate.  But for Lindsay Gault of Canada surrogacy is part of whom she is.   During a collage project in the 8th grade, Lindsay came upon an article on surrogacy. Her heart, mind and soul spoke to her at that moment in time. She knew her positive imprints would lead her to become a surrogate mom. Statistics show that infertility affects one in six Canadians. And surrogacy is an option for those who aren’t able to carry children on their own.  There's two types of surrogacy. The first is traditional surrogacy which isn't as common. A surrogate would carry a baby for another couple using her own eggs and then either the intended father or a donor sperm.  The second and more common type of surrogacy is gestational surrogacy. The baby does not have a genetic link to the surrogate mother. For Lindsay Gault surrogacy was a goal. After having her own child she was ready and willing to help others have theirs.  Her stories are heartwarming.  Her journeys began with strangers. Their experiences together bond them for life. Unfortunately, not all of the experiences were positive. Some rather painful and near death.   In the end Lindsay Gault would do it all over again. Because she is amazing!! Victoria Moran is a vegan with a voice. Before becoming vegan she was a vegetarian. As a vegetarian she thought she was keeping animals from being slaughtered. But she learned otherwise. That didn’t sit well with her. Victoria became a vegan decades ago. In fact she was named sexiest vegan over 50 by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.) She also has strong convictions of how she wants to live her life. “I may just have to do something for somebody else, for a stranger. I just know that I don't want to continue in my life or certainly leave this life with some of these stones unturned.”   One of those stones was to get out into the world where she could change peoples lives. And work with other vegans. Paul McCartney is one of those vegans. Her first encounter with him began with a cigarette butt. She is a certified holistic health counselor (HHC, AADP). Furthermore she is the founder and director of https://www.mainstreetvegan.net/academy (Main Street Vegan Academy). This is the place where you can receive training and certification as a vegan lifestyle coach. Her convictions are strong and her voice is passionate. She is living a charmed life which is also her best selling book.  Victoria’s recipe for a charmed life may be heard on this episode. Do you trust your doctor enough to take the medications prescribed for you? Why or why not? Do you ever read the paper that comes with your prescription to learn what you are taking? Furthermore do you know the side effects? Do you ask questions of the pharmacist when you pick up your prescription? Some medications can be silent killers. How can we stop people from dying due to their medications?

What is the role of the pharmacist? A pharmacist is a health care professional licensed to prepare, compound, and dispense drugs. However, the pharmacist must do the above under the written order of a prescription.  Furthermore it is very important for a pharmacist to cooperate with, consult and advise the licensed health-care provider concerning drugs. Rebecca DeMoss (AKA Rebecca Van Vleck DeMoss) knew at a young age that she wanted to serve her community. Pursuing anything with blood or trauma was not a career choice. Hence becoming a doctor was out of the question. But Rebecca still wanted to be in the medical field. Rebecca finds her niche in the world of pharmacy.   At only 28, Dr. Rebecca DeMoss is a doctor of pharmacy specializing in the area of long-term care pharmacy.  It was brought to her attention that a prescription for a narcotic patch seemed inappropriate for a specific patient. Dr. Rebecca did research. Consequently her findings show an increase in inappropriate prescribing of transdermal fentanyl.   In fact, she created education and presentations regarding this medication. She provides education and research to the healthcare providers regarding the prescribing of transdermal (TD) fentanyl. As a result lives are saved. What is the transdermal fentanyl patch and how can we stop people from dying? Dr. Rebecca DeMoss https://www.tldrpharmacy.com/content/what-every-pharmacist-should-know-about-transdermal-fentanyl (Dr. DeMoss's blog) Listen to more episodes from Your Positive Imprint: https://yourpositiveimprint.com/episodes/ (More Episodes) [caption id="attachment_3464" align="alignnone" width="150"]https://yourpositiveimprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/rebecca-and-thomas.png () Dr. DeMoss and husband Thomas[/caption]

Partial Transcript Catherine: Hello, this is Catherine, your host of your positive imprint. This is a free podcast, but please support me with feedback, positive reviews and by hitting those five stars. Today's guest is a doctor of pharmacy. Her positive imprints are the action she's taking and bringing awareness to inappropriate prescribing of transdermal fentanyl. This is an extremely potent narcotic patch. Listen how she is saving lives. Dr Rebecca van blech. DeMoss. Thank you so much for joining me. Well, Dr. Rebecca DeMoss: hi. Good morning. Thank you for having me. This is just such a great, great day. Catherine: It is. and, we're ending up sitting in a car for this because the a little cafe we were in had music playing and we can't have. Rebecca: and it's much more fun though. Just being you and me just talking about positive things. Catherine: well and you have a definite positive imprint. You have had this, Oh my gosh, you just have whatever force inside of you to bring awareness to health care providers with regard to this narcotic patch. But first tell me, tell the listeners what got you into wanting to be in the pharmacy world. Rebecca: Well, my mother was actually a pharmacist and she graduated from KU, Kansas university. And I think when we started through high school and kind of talking about future careers, I ended up with pharmacy because it was the perfect blend of science, human anatomy and helping people. Dr. Rebecca DeMoss: So as I started my prerequisites, it just was that that really great fit of not having so much responsibility of a physician not having to deal with blood and you know, surgeries or whatever

Lisa Hywood of Zimbabwe’s Tikki Hywood Foundation shares her philosophy and experiences in saving Africa’s wildlife.  “I said to him, ‘why are we counting elephants?’ and he replied, ‘cause you’re going to help move them.’   The day she counted elephants was the day that changed her life. She realized that if mankind has a common goal, a common purpose, then we can do anything in collaboration. Her mission in life after that day was to set up the Tikki Hywood Foundation (named after her late father). Furthermore, her focus is to save the lesser known animals. The pangolin is a scaly anteater mammal. Currently and sadly the pangolin is the most trafficked, poached mammal on the planet. The pangolin is being plucked from its natural environment and tortured. The ramifications of losing this animal are great. Tikki Hywood Foundation offers shelter and medical care for any animal brought to the center.  Lisa does not assign any animal as educational ambassador because ambassadorial animal equals commercialization.   There are many other avenues to create a better framework for educating people such as holograms, and other uses of technology. Lisa inspires us to be responsible for what we are doing; the space we are inhibiting; our waste factor. Get inspired!! Dream and dream big!   Lisa asks, 'what did you do today to help our planet and wildlife survive?' Humane Handling. Is this important for the Taste?Christine Deck of Deck Family Farm says that humane handling is good for the animal and good for the flavor of the meat. Deck Family Farm practices a long-term approach in developing a sustainable livestock operation. Specifically they generate soil fertility through the natural cycles of composting.  Additionally they are stewards of the earth so they manage grazing which includes seeding a variety of grasses. But also they believe a healthy ecosystem includes predators.  Most importantly they practice humane handling and also have a certification to show for it. Moreover, Christine Deck shares her farming model of no pesticide or herbicide use.   Christine believes the following are some of the reasons for Deck Family Farm’s success:  environmental stewardship humane handling transparency and sustainability both environmentally and monetarily organic farming

Christine also explains the different farm certifications such as free range, humane certified, etc. These certifications are surprising and not easy to obtain. https://deckfamilyfarm.com/our-story (https://deckfamilyfarm.com/our-story) https://yourpositiveimprint.com/episodes/ (https://yourpositiveimprint.com/episodes/)

Merle Powell. Everybody Has a Story To Tell

Happy Thanksgiving!  This is a Thanksgiving Bonus episode with homemaker Merle Powell.  Merle is a resident of Kodiak, Alaska.

Merle Powell grew up as part of the Greatest Generation.  Furthermore that generation grew up knowing the depression and its difficulties.  Consequently Merle most certainly understands those difficult times.

But her memories are mostly happy.  However, one memory, an incident, built inner strength and deepened her compassion for others.

“I just dissolved into tears because it was a failure and that was the wrong thing to have done.”  (This incident was over a burned meatloaf.)

Following this incident in high school Merle was guilt ridden.  But it caused her to deepen her convictions of making sacrifices for others.

Merle was married to the late Guy Powell, a well known king crab researcher.  They were foster parents.   In addition to fostering children they were involved in every aspect of their community on Kodiak Island.  As a result, both Merle and Guy leave a legacy of positive imprints.

Sustainable Ecological Holistic Design

Permaculture is a sustainable design system that applies ecological principles that are found in nature.  For example, some of those designs include regeneration, integrated water resources, ecological and environmental designs.

Furthermore it is becoming more popular around the world because permaculture is useful in responding to climate change.  Additionally it also responds to constrained natural resources.

Sigrid Drage is a successful permaculture farmer in Austria.  Not only does she share her holistic design but also her ecological philosophy on this episode.  Due to the insects, Sigrid didn't have an apple crop this last year.  However, it's part of the process; part of the natural environment.  But through permaculture there is natural regeneration.

Because of the environmental changes on our planet, small-scale farming is a good ecological way for the future.

Allyson Zahm and Becky Hansis-O'Neill share the story of Penguin Chill.

PENGUIN CHILL, an innovative technological masterpiece

Allyson Zahm of the New Mexico BioPark Society had a story to tell.  Her story is about penguins.

Equally important to her story is to understand climate change and how options in New Mexico are impacting climate.  Not only does Allyson want to make the world better for penguins but other ecosystems and animals too.   However, she wanted technology to tell that story because technology provides many more tools than signage alone.  But also people can learn multiple things in multiple ways and it's exciting every time.   Unquestionably interactive displays promise discovery.  So it peaks curiosity in a way that a sign doesn’t.

Ideum was that innovative technology answer.  They are a New Mexico based creative company focused on using emerging technologies to design public installations and products that lead to meaningful visitor experiences.

Ideum's creative designer, Becky Hansis-O'Neill, also a biologist, was tasked with the job of penguin chill storyteller.

Through innovation and collaboration the two entities brought interactive conservation messaging to the public.  In addition, the visitor’s not only learn about penguins but how to conserve for a global impact.

Global Food Security. Kenya and MozambiqueGlobal Food Security Andrew Bracken creates public and private partnerships to invest in sustainable agriculture for small farmers across the globe. Moreover he collaborates with entities across the continents. Furthermore it’s about global food security on a planet where climate change is affecting food supplies. For this episode he discusses partnerships with Kenya and Mozambique. Farmers in Northern Kenya are at the leading edge of those noticing climate change. The farmers in this Kenyan region are herders. Unfortunately the farmers don’t have the money or resources to move their animals during droughts. Therefore the animals can starve, become diseased and die. However, partnerships through Feed, the future partnering for innovation provides tools to mitigate the impact of climate change. Andrew discusses the innovative technology that helps farmers. One of those tools is a satellite. NASA and the European Space Agency are responsible for the satellite. These satellites send data to an institution in Kenya which interprets that data. The data us used to build an algorithm that shows whether or not there’s available pasture and where it is located. The farmers, through the use of an app., can locate those pastures. Insurance and grants have helped pay to move the animals. Mozambique is a large country both geographically and in population. It has been hit by two major cyclones; Idai and Kenneth. Whereas half of Mozambique’s cereal production is gone. Andrew and the Partnership for Innovation work to provide seeds to the farmers for the next growing season. That horticulture growing season starts in December. In the meantime the partnership is assisting in finding ways to provide food aid. The farmers there have lost everything. Andrew Bracken’s and Partnering for Innovation’s approach creates the conditions for sustainable success.

Glassblower - Water Fire Breath

David Royce and Michael Boyd were mesmerized with the authentic and romantic art of glassblowing from an early age.  Of particular interest was the water, fire and breath of the glasssblower that drew them in.  Furthermore, a pot where molten melted glass awaited the artisan to transform it into a breathtaking piece of art.

History places this amazing craft of glassblowing almost 2,000 years to the Syrians.  Subsequently the art spread worldwide.

Without a doubt the art remains magnificent today.  However, the carbon footprint is a challenge with the transportation and use of natural gas, etc.

For David Royce and Michael Boyd, sustainability and affordability have always been their mission.  How they accomplished it was a challenge. Michael and David found ways to provide sustainable light fixtures to customers through their innovative actions.

Their values necessitate that all of what they have accomplished is worth it.  Those positive imprints are not just theirs alone but also their  community of glass recyclers.

All of Bicycle Glass, Co. fixtures are from post-consumer glass.  Waste not want not.  Plus, mistakes  are remelted.

David and Michael reduced their carbon footprint thereby conserving energy in all of their production. By using renewable wind energy to offset all electricity usage, their studio is nearly carbon neutral.  In addition they also use 100% post-consumer recycled packaging.

They understand that sustainable products can be expensive.  Therefore, their high-quality, handmade glass products are within reach.  After all, their community of recyclers provides the opportunity to practice sustainability and produce exquisite hand-made lighting by an authentic glassblower.

The two share their stories of what it means to be a glassblower.  In addition they share their innovations of becoming sustainable for the planet.

Podcast? Who would've thought!!???

This podcast bonus episode is inspired by Catherine’s listeners.  The questions asked come from the listeners.

Catherine is philosophical but also sentimental.  She is a member of a close-knit family with several siblings. Life was spent in the outdoors: camping, hiking, backpacking, traveling, fishing and singing songs around the campfire.  Often times she and her family were the only ones in the wilderness except for the wildlife.

Above all, her parents told stories and taught the children about life from these stories.  As a result, Catherine enjoys telling stories and writing about her experiences in a reflective manner.

She has taught in education for many years. During her years of teaching she involved students in important community and global issues through lobbying local and national politicians.

Catherine volunteers with numerous organizations.  For example, she's a volunteer firefighter, and volunteers with animal, environmental and children’s organizations.

She and her husband of many years enjoy mountain biking, photography, snorkeling, hiking, backpacking, camping, snowshoeing, traveling and movies.  The two of them enjoy it when their dog is able to accompany them on their excursions.

Today Catherine is no longer in the classroom but is an educational consultant and a one-on-one tutor.

Subsequently Your Positive Imprint podcast launched in January 2019.  She features stories from people she meets all over the world whose positive achievements are inspiring positive actions.

Stories are EVERYWHERE and people are EVERYWHERE!!

Catherine inspires listeners by uncovering positive imprints but she also has a tagline for reflection.  Your Positive Imprint.  "What’s YOUR P.I.?”

Nature Artist, Celia Cortez

Nature artist Celia Cortez moved from corporate America to a full-time artist.  She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico which is known as the “city different.” Artists from around the world reside in Santa Fe where they exhibit their craft.

There is a special place called Canyon Road in Santa Fe.  This subdivision is well-known for its cultural architecture with an acacia flowing through.  Celia finds peace and tranquility along this acacia but also other places in nature.  She hikes and spends time getting to know what she is looking at.

For Celia, being in nature takes a keen eye.  When she sees a flower where the petals are falling off she contemplates how she can showcase this in her drawings.

She finds beauty in the whole process from life to death with flowers.  It’s amazing but even more so in how she honors nature.  There is life and death in nature and it is beautiful.

Sea Monkey Project Ocean Plastic Solutions

Ocean Plastic Solutions - Sea Monkey Project

It’s huge and it needs to be removed.

Sea life is not under water but under the threat of death.

The Sea Monkeys, fortunately, inform the world about ways to clean ocean plastic pollution.

Believe it or not there are still communities who are not informed.  They don’t know that throwing plastic bags into the ocean can be a death sentence for turtles and other sea life.  Not to mention that in hundreds of years that plastic will still exist as micro plastic.  Micro means small but the threat is still huge!

There are ocean plastic solutions.

Meet members of the Sea Monkey Project which is a family of four.  Carlos, Sarah, Sydney and Indi.   They sail and also live aboard their 41 foot yacht.

Sea Monkey Project cleans plastic pollution and provides ocean plastic solutions.

Sydney Steenland sees the world through her projects.   Her passion is to prevent more death and destruction through ocean plastic solutions.  She is 14.

Carlos, skipper and Sydney’s dad says that ocean life and other wildlife don't have a choice. They are just stuck with what we do.  He is an inventor and provides his ocean plastic solution.

Sarah, Sydney’s mom, is a cartoon artist.  She creates visual materials in order to educate others.  Through Sarah’s work, people globally are informed about ocean plastic pollution.  Every problem also has a solution.

Indi Steenland is 11 years old and sorts plastics for shredding.  He knows all seven categories of plastic and is able to teach others too.

Rainfall forecasting model can serve world in predicting droughts and floods before they happen

Rainfall forecasting is big money!!  For over 40 years, Ray Schmitt has been a  physical oceanographer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. https://www.whoi.edu (https://www.whoi.edu)

Throughout most of his career he has studied the salinity variations of the ocean.  The difference in salinity is because there are patterns in evaporation and rainfall over the ocean. The ocean contains 97% of all the water on the planet which makes it central to the whole climate system.

He says that all of the planet’s rainfall on land has to come from our ocean.  People in the midwest don't realize how far that moisture travels.

Back in the 1980s was when Ray began studying the water cycle.  At that time nobody cared if it rained on the ocean. So it was kind of a neglected topic.  But it paid off well as a research topic because he dove into the research when people were starting to realize that it was important.

Decades later he recruited his identical twin sons to enter a rainfall forecasting contest with him.  The contest was hosted by the US Bureau of Reclamation with hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes sponsored by private companies.

The Bureau of Reclamation is part of the Department of the Interior and basically they manage many of the dams in the west and all of the hydro power stations.  They are constantly evaluating whether to release water from a dam if rainfall is to be expected or save it for the drought. They Supply water to farmers all over the west.

The contest was pretty intimidating but we won.

So our model is useful and it would be great to see our technique expanded to serve the world.  Check out their company:  https://salientpredictions.launchrock.com (https://salientpredictions.launchrock.com)

Besides rainfall forecasting, Ray also talks about climate change and failed legislation policies.

The Fog Rolled In

Weather flight delays.  Opportunity or annoyance?  Fog rolls in and closes the Kodiak, Alaska runway.  Stranded commercial airline pilots Doug and Dave share their perspectives. You can't build your life on past successes. Tomorrow hasn't yet come.  Documentary filmmaker Sarah Lanier joins the conversation sharing a foggy experience.

The fog rolling in was one of the most amazing outdoor weather experiences I’ve ever had.  I was mesmerized by the cotton cloud that came in off the ocean.  From where I was standing it was eerie as the fog seemed to envelop everything in its path.  An opportunity for writing a horror story lay in front of me.

My niece Sarah Lanier was with me.  She is a documentary film maker and she had her equipment. Yes, she documented this experience using time lapse.  It is available for you to view on my blog.  Please leave a comment too!

Being an outdoor enthusiast, this was an amazing sight.  One plane successfully made it through a small opening in the fog.  After that, all became silent with the closing of the airport.  Two stranded commercial airline pilots met up with us at the house we were staying at.  Doug, a gentleman I met years ago happened to be on the island for a funeral.  He was traveling with another pilot, Dave.

They had not planned on sleeping because they were awaiting the fog to lift.  Sarah and I enjoyed listening to many of their stories and adventures.  While listening, I decided it was an opportunity to have a recorded conversation.

Shoes! Changing the Way Children Play

There are 300 million children in the world who walk around barefoot. The My 360 Project is changing that. As far as the shoes go, this non-profit organization does not want to buy and distribute them. They want to teach locals around the world how to become sustainable with their own cobbler business.  Experts teach and pay people how to build the shoe. It's part of a sustainability project. The local artisans build shoes for the My 360 Project.  Volunteers deliver the shoes to poor communities around the world. Through community, a seed of hope is planted into the lives of others. This non-profit is about sustainability, community, and economy.   How does this organization help people become sustainable? Darryl Carnley didn’t know anything about shoes at first. But the goal is for the people to have their own cobbler business eventually and make their own living. Sustainability.   Darryl Carnley, CEO of the My 360 Project shares his experiences and views of the world. As he travels, he plants seeds of hope especially into the children. When fitting shoes on the children, whom for many are shoeless, he washes their feet first. He feels this is a way to show care and love.   The children are full of smiles and laughter when receiving the special gift built by one of their own community members. I didn't know where I fit in the world

Richard East, also known as Van Cat Meow, is a nomad from Tasmania, which he describes as one of the last untouched wildernesses in the world.  He says he and his cat Willow are no longer travellers, but ‘nomads.’  They travel around Australia in a van.  Rich goes on to say,

If you’d asked me when I was ten what I’d be doing in twenty years’ time, I suspect my answer would have been exactly this. Exploration and adventure — the kinds of things we lose sight of as we’re thrown into adulthood. But now, I feel like I have those things back, even though, two years ago, they seemed like an absurd and impossible dream.

I didn’t know where I fit in the world.  There was so much to be grateful for but I wasn’t grateful so I was on a quest to change my life.

He envies the mind of a cat — unable to experience existential dread.  Rich made a decision to leave it all—the Australian dream.

A promise was made to look after Willow.  "I realized how much this little cat meant to me.  She has a beautiful personality and she's adapted to the lifestyle quite easily."  (The nomad lifestyle of travelling in a van while taking in the Australian beauty.)

Storytelling is a Development of Characters

Storytelling is a unique way to tell a story!

https://yourpositiveimprint.com/episodes/ (Episodes Page)

Elaine Muray was born in Western Pennsylvania.

My father was a small town barber and he collected characters.  There was the man from the steel mills and there were educators, lawyers, the local hobos and the men from the Mennonite church. Over the years as I became witness to some of their stories I got interested in writing about my barbershop experiences.

Through this art I develop characters and stories and I work hard on transitions. Physical transitions.

Each of the characters has to be very distinct physically from each other.  They have to interact with each other very quickly.

I travel internationally to tell stories using my art which I studied for years.

Storytelling brings the story and characters to life.

Human Rights. Where do we begin?

Human Rights. What is our global obligation?

My experiences have left me with questions.

Those questions guide my thinking into what  it means to be a part of a global society that allows access to some and not to others. That’s reflective literally of this question of whose lives matter in the world? Whom do we honor and whom do we fight for as a global society?

Somehow I have to honor the histories that I have become witness to.

I did not wake any Saturday or Sunday except to funeral bells.

Where Do We Begin?

Begin with the school teachers because they are dying too quickly to be replaced.

The children I worked with were dealing with such a very different reality from mine.  I grew up fairly sheltered and sort of privileged and hadn't actually confronted death.

How does one grapple with that reality?

Repair YOUR Treasures Down Under

What sentimental treasures are hanging at your home?  Do you have treasures broken that are sitting in a drawer?  Or, yikes, do your broken or torn treasured belongings make their way to the landfills ?

Ah heck, some items are just practical!  Take for instance a vacuum or a phone! Unfortunately, when they break, our throw-away society is to trash and replace them.  Well don’t toss those items; fix them!!

Repair Cafes all over the world are keeping items from going into the landfills.  They also teach problem solving in how to fix items.

“In terms of skills and experience in getting a problem solved and trying to work through the problem I think that we are sort of developing a society that is getting less opportunity to do that.” - Andrew, founder of North Balwyn Repair Cafe, Melbourne Australia

“Those of us who fix and mend are all volunteers and we work full time.  But this is something that we can continue to do.  It’s social but it’s also a great cause.” - Anne, event coordinator, North Balwyn Repair Cafe

Patrons of North Balwyn’s Repair Cafe in Melbourne, Australia share their thoughts on why they utilize Repair Cafes.  You will be pleasantly amused with some of the items repaired and mended.

Welcome mates to Your Positive imprint!                                                                            Andrew Tynan.  North Balwyn Repair Cafe founder.                                                                       Ann Davey. Event coordinator for North Balwyn Repair Cafe.

Patrons and volunteers: Albert, Di, Sally, Manny, Mina.

"The Repair Café was initiated by Martine Postma. Since 2007, she has been striving for sustainability at a local level in many ways. Martine organised the very first Repair Café in Amsterdam, on October 18, 2009. It was a great success." - Repair Cafe

Write how YOU Talk!!

Magic? Story? Magic Words?  Who doesn't love magic?  It's all in the words.  Magic Words!

Kelsey Formost is an actress and entrepreneur.  She is in the copyright business and the business of word coaching.

“People are shocked to discover that I was a child who was very shy.

While I was living in New York I fell in this group called College Humor.  It’s fun slap-stick sketch comedy. There was something that clicked in my brain where I thought, oh my gosh.  I can tell the jokes and make up the stories too! Steering the conversation is easier being a writer than an actress.  So I really got into writing script and doing sketch comedy.

I had some family events, a tragedy that brought me back to the West Coast where I'm from, San Diego.

Telling a story whether it be your business line, commercial ad, or writing a story, you need to WRITE HOW YOU TALK!

Don't forget to give yourself space for frivolous enchantments!

I come in and work with entrepreneurs on how to best optimize the words that they are sharing to accurately portray whom they are, what they offer, and why it's important.  It's all about really clarifying for people why you are in business, whom they want to connect with and what the messages that they want to share with the world are.

It's all about putting it into words but in your voice.

There's an innate interest in what is going to make somebody connect to on a very deep personal level so that a story is heard. That can be translated across every industry.  Magic words!  Words are magic!”

Oceanography. I’m viewing the world in tactile and tangible ways. Oceanography has real elements of discovery and adventure. Kurt Polzin humanizes the stressful responsibilities of million dollar instruments returning from the depths of the ocean.

“I worry obsessively on whether or not a multi-million dollar instrument is going to come back from the depths of the ocean or not.  When it doesn’t come back, I find myself worrying and sitting there on a boat. I listen to its ping and I know where it is more or less.

My interest in science and oceanography started before even graduate school. When I was an undergraduate I got this degree in physics but I knew that I didn’t want to do high-energy physics.  That type of job puts me in a large group situation, in buildings and often underground.

What I felt from oceanography is that it was a little bit more individualistic and there was some adventure that was related to that. With oceanography I go out on a boat and I throw things into the ocean. I’m looking at the world in a very tactile and tangible way.

That took me to Woods Hole. I am from Eastern Washington State. The Evergreen State.  But I’m from the part of the Evergreen State that is semi-arid.  One goes from the mountains into the desert with rattlesnakes and sagebrush.

Well, I left all of that behind and went to graduate school at MIT.  I began working on projects that were related to turbulent mixing. My projects used very specialized instrumentation built here at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Part of my job is to spend a fair amount of time at sea trying to understand what the instrument was doing.  And of course analyzing data the ocean was providing.”

Born Loving the SeaClimate Change – It’s not okay anymore. Dr. Helen Phillips is a senior researcher in the area of physical oceanography. Her research is through the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania. “There’s no biology in my area of oceanography. It is all physical science based on math and physics. I was a bit of a drifter as a young person and I think a bit of an introvert as well. Socializing didn’t come easily for me. But I enjoyed studying and I felt it a very rewarding thing. Math and physics were well-defined so when I answered a question correctly it was really obvious that it was correct. If you write an essay in English or history it’s a less exact science and maybe open to more interpretation of what is good and what is bad. So I liked the exactness of science. When I left school I did not really have a clear idea of what I wanted to be but I knew that science was part of my life.  I had a boyfriend in my final year of high school and he was a bit distracting. I did not do as well as I perhaps should have given my comfort with studying. My parents were both doctors and I’m sure they had aspirations for me to become a doctor. My uncle was a sailor and when I would visit with him he would take me sailing. Definitely oceanography I thought. Yes. I entered the Flinders University in South Australia and there they had a department of Earth Sciences. So I studied oceanography and meteorology as I have always loved the sea.” Oceanography Research ‘Down Under’https://www.utas.edu.au/profiles/staff/imas/helen-phillips (University of Tasmania Link to Helen’s profile) My interest and research is in studying the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. It flows all of the way around Antarctica and separates the warm waters of the subtropics from the cold Antarctic. We know that heat must cross this current because that’s how the Earth maintains a stable climate. It receives more sun around the equator and it loses a lot of heat around Antarctica and somehow there has to be a pathway from the incoming heat at the equator to the outgoing heat at the pole. Both the atmosphere and the ocean contribute to that cycle. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is like a big wall in the path of this movement of heat and so we need to understand the processes that allow the heat to move across the current. Eddies and the meandering of the current are a very key part of that story. So what we’ve learned in the Gulf Stream we are now applying to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and finding that it is very similar. We are seeing strengthening winds across the Southern Ocean which are causing the currents to generate more Eddies so then it’s becoming more unstable.  Those Eddies are contributing to more rapid movement of heat. Everything is connected so the ocean temperatures are felt by the atmosphere and the ocean experiences change due to global warming. The amount of heat stored in the ocean increases and it has been increasing and it will continue to increase through global warming.” Partial TranscriptInformation on some of the instruments, acronyms, etc.: (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is an independent Australian federal government agency responsible for scientific research. The Arctic: Heaven and Hell All In One

Nature Governs The Arctic

Steven Kazlowski of Left Eye Productions, Inc., is a trained marine biologist, naturalist and professional wildlife photographer:

The Arctic to me, well, it's Heaven and Hell all in one. It's either the best place you could ever want to be or you could feel cold and maybe a little scared.  With the situation you are in you could feel either one or the other it seems like. When it's nice and everything is going right there's probably not many places like it on the Earth where it is still free and open.  Nature governs it. People like Jack still go out on the land or live on the land and do unique things.  People like him live up here and exist with it.

Jack Lives!

Inupiat, Jack Kayotuk lives in the Arctic:

It was really cold and dark and windy and I started heading back to the camp which was about 60 miles away.  My snow machine was giving me problems but I thought it was nothing so I just kept going. I made it about another 30 miles and the engine blew out. There I was with just my two own feet to walk 30 miles to camp and I had no gear.  And the drinking water had frozen up already.

Polar Bear Guides

Jack and Steve are polar bear guides and they educate tourists on how the bears live and the need to protect them.  Jack recalls a female bear with a broken leg but returned year after year healthier than the last.  Steve tells his story of when the polar bear tapped him on the shoulder.

Struggling Readers Find Support from Journalist Volunteering with 'Reading Partners'

Matt Bracken is a young senior editor for a Washington, D.C. based publication.  He also volunteers with Reading Partners as a literacy tutor for struggling readers.  His positive imprint is impressive as he chooses to help students succeed at a school that needs his services but is located a long distance from his own community.

Matt does not see his volunteer work with Reading Partners as a service but rather an opportunity.

“It’s an opportunity to be a part of a community that would never even be in my path.  I see passionate people trying to make their community better and my tutoring allowed me to see that.”

He says, “I am lucky and I think other people should be as lucky to be able to see a place that does need a little bit more love.”

Refuse to Use Plastic!!

Ten year old environmental activist Lilly Platt is taking an active role in seeking political action against global warming and against plastics. She is a youth ambassador of plastic pollution coalition. One day I was walking with my grandfather. I think I was eight. Maybe younger. There was something plastic on the ground and I picked it up. My grandpa told me that the plastic will make its way to the ocean over here in Holland.   Well, I looked up the dangers of plastics and it is so sad because animals are dying because of the plastics. I decided to become active and do something about it. I started Lilly's Plastic Pickup because I want to educate and inform the world about the dangers of plastic. It went viral so people are listening and reacting. Now I'm an environmental activist. Farmers send me letters telling me about their animals eating plastic and even balloons. I want to see a ban on balloons being released into the air at events. Plastic bags and balloons give the illusion of food and animals eat it. Straws and plastic bags make a whale feel full and so it won't eat. The whale will die. It makes me very sad. Being an environmental activist I am hands on. I've been all over the world cleaning beaches and meeting government officials. I even met with the prime minister of Curaçao. Please refuse to use plastic and please pick up rubbish. Get a bag. Get a grabber. Let's clean up the world! Who's with me?

I Didn’t Want to Audition for Britain’s Got Talent I didn’t really want to do Britain’s Got Talent.  I did not have the courage to get up and sing in front of Simon Cowell. No way!

Well, I ultimately went on the show.

The song the producers and I decided on was Everybody Hurts.

When I finished the song there was a pause for about 3 or 4 seconds. I was thinking Okay.  I walk off the stage and forget this ever happened!

There was just silence.

Singing the song I wasn’t nervous but afterwards I began to shake with just nerves.

Hallelujah was a big hit.  When I look back at Hallelujah I didn’t think I was doing anything great because what I was doing I love doing. It certainly wasn’t the first wedding I sang at.

But the volume of emails and letters that came in after the Hallelujah experience was not something I was expecting. After Britain’s Got Talent  when I sang Everybody Hurts I received more and more emails.

An email that still sticks with me because I remember shaking after I read it is from a woman.  Now I don’t know what part of the world she’s in but she said she had been suffering from chronic pain for years.

She said, “I had my suicide letter written but then I heard you…”

That made me think, oh my God. What is going on here? This is all beyond me really.

We only get one journey and we have to do the best we can.

Father Ray Kelly Opens Up Father Ray Kelly was a late vocation into the priesthood at 35.

Early on I thought about the priesthood but I started having money in my pocket so that changed me completely.

I was a hit-and-miss Catholic and didn’t go to Mass consistently.

The Pope invited my group to Castle Gandolfo and I entertained him singing the song Danny Boy.

Well, I started going to Mass and I began to have these thoughts in my head and the thought was ‘Ray, you know you could be up there doing what that guy is doing.’

Ray, I thought, you’re definitely cracking up. No way no way don’t even think about being up there. Absolutely not.

Well, I sold my car, I quit my job and I joined the Kiltegans, a missionary society. St. Patrick’s Missionary Society.  I was ordained June 1989.

Some guys and I formed a band.  Rafiki.  We recorded a song I wrote while another guy wrote the music for Youth Aid in Africa.

As a missionary I went to South Africa.  I was about three months into learning the language when I received a phone call.  My dad was very sick.

It’s meaningful that I flew back to be with the family. My dad died of a brain tumor.

After the funeral I returned to Africa.

Apartheid was supposedly breaking up but it shocked me with the continued segregation.  It was stressful but there seemed to be nothing I could do.

We only get one shot at this through this life and we have to do the best we can and give the best we can.

Welcome to Father Ray Kelly from Ireland. I do not want to label him with any specific positive imprint because he has many.

I want to begin with what brought him to the priesthood

I guess I was a late vocation. I was late to the priesthood. I was about 35 years old when I was ordained. I had worked in Dublin for about well nearly eleven years in the Civil Service in the government offices there.

I remember when I was 16 or 17 thinking about the priesthood but I think something scared me off very very fast. Well then I got a job and I started having money in my pocket so that changed me completely with regards to thinking about the priesthood.

And it's strange how things come back to you. Back in 1979 Pope John Paul II came to Ireland. It was a great occasion. when Pope John Paul II came in September of 1979 and I thought well it was a great experience to meet the pope and I was there in one of the locations where he said Mass.

The following year a group of us in Dublin, part of the Catholic youth Council, decided to pay a return visit to Rome to thank Pope John Paul II for coming to Ireland. So an organization was set up for about a thousand young people that traveled over to Rome for 9-day trip or a pilgrimage. I was on that with a number of my friends from work as well and that was a great experience in itself and we had met the Pope in Peter's Square.

He invited us to Castle Gandolfo for Mass and then he invited us the following evening back to Castle Gandolfo for a concert. He shared a talk with us and then we put on a concert for him. I was one of the ones picked to entertain him and I remember singing a song Danny Boy.

Afterwards he presented me with the rosary beads like he usually does to most people. It was a great experience and I got a photograph taken with him and our group as well.

It's strange then when I came back. Now you being Catholic you're familiar with Lent obviously. Well the season of Lent we like to do a little sacrifice. As children we are encouraged to give up sweets or something.

Well I remember when I was young my father used to always get me up to go to Mass in the mornings before school. Well I sort of thought when I became back from Rome I thought I would do something

Outside Magazine Freelance Writer, Eva Holland

Eva Holland is a freelance writer for Outside magazine but she also does work for National Geographic and other publications.

I write mostly narrative features about outdoor adventures, team sports and how we connect to the wilderness and environmental issues.  There are all kinds of ways that  we interact with the wilderness.

I did an article for Hakai magazine.  This publication is fairly new and it covers coastal science and societies.  It's pretty neat.

My story was on polar bears.  I went to a small village along the Bering Strait where the village is setting up a non-lethal bear patrol.  I spent a lot of time with the polar bear patrol but I didn't see any polar bears.

In February it was just solid ice.  The patrol was training and working with all sorts of  ideas to be a no-kill patrol.  The primary purpose is of course to protect the town but their goal is to not kill bears unnecessarily while protecting the people. So they have noisemakers, air horns, pepper spray and other non-lethal methods to try to discourage the bears from coming into the village.

The bears' habitat is diminishing and the villagers are really trying to work with the changing situation and be part of conservation.

Science of Fear Topic, Eva's book

Right now I'm pulling back from magazine writing because I'm going to be working on a book. The book is somewhat about my experiences but it's going to be the science of fear.  The working title is Shake It Off: A Personal Journey Through The Science of Facing Our Fears, and it will be published by Penguin Canada.

It will include some of my own experiences and fears because I have fear of heights and other fears. It's going to be looking into science and how fear functions in our mind and bodies and what happens in our brain when we are trying to overcome fear. What does it look like physiologically? The Wilderness prompted me to think about this idea because you think about your fears a lot in the wilderness.

Experiences and Positive Imprints

My positive imprint is my work.  I write stories that will have some meaning for people.  It doesn't mean they have to be super serious or anything because there's something fun in reading about schlepping across the sea ice.

When I'm having a hard time I think about the lessons I've learned in just the wonder of learning the outdoors.  I want stories to bring that joy and ones that are thought-provoking.

Vegan Martin Zeman from Czech RepublicVegan is a choice I am able to make. In the past, people in Czech Republic couldn't really make those choices because of the scarcity of so many things but today we have developed a very competitive country. The old regime is recent and people still remember that and so whenever there are ways or rules that seem impossible we will find a way through it.  We have the freedom to study and the freedom to travel. I am an electrical engineer. All of the good schools are free because they are public which means I did not have to pay for my studies. My degree allows me to work for a great company which brings me to the United States from time to time. Being a vegan was a choice I made about a year ago but I was thinking about quitting eating meat for a long time. The final step was the inspiration of the movie Earthlings. It was narrated by Joaquin Phoenix and it shows the brutal truth about the food industry and that kind of made me do the next step and quit eating all animal products-- meat, dairy products, eggs. The pure reason behind my being vegan is ethical for me. My selection of food doesn't involve cruelty in killing animals. There are other options out there of what to eat and I can replace everything. Being vegan just makes me feel better. I learned English in the Carnival and playing video gamesI've been studying English since nursery school but the school system is not very good in terms of languages. I started watching movies in English and playing computer games. With computer games I have communicative interactions with other actors in the games.  When I was at the University I decided to go somewhere abroad to work so I chose this program called Work and Travel USA. I traveled to USA and worked for three months and then spent one month traveling. I went to Pennsylvania to work for a carnival which was pretty interesting.  So work as a carney is very adorable. I meet a lot of nice people and every time I give rides to a kid their parents will stand next to me and talk. This is by the way one of the greatest advantages of American people as they are really open-minded and open to talking to other people; to strangers. Two summers as a carny developed my English skills.  I also work for an American company in Czech Republic so I speak English every day. My traveling took me to Alaska. Alaska was well known for having to work long hours and which was good money. I was a poor student with no money and I also wanted to go there. Working at the cannery was good work. While in Alaska I got to go to Denali, Kenai Fjords and I saw bears, elk, caribou, and whales. Environmental Tip Plus PhilosophyI'm staying at a hotel where they serve vegan meals. There's a sign in the lavatory, like most hotels, that says if you'd like to use the towels again just hang them up but if you'd like us to wash them then throw them on the ground. For conserving water. Well I go to the restaurant inside the hotel and they serve me with paper plates and plastic silverware and I don't understand that. I think I'm the only one at the hotel to do this but I bring my ceramic plate and my metal from my room to use for meals. I have a quote from a movie that I really love. I'm no extraordinary movie person but my favorite movie is Forrest Gump. It's just so positive and I love the quote about life being like a box of chocolates and never knowing what you're going to get. But the quote that inspires my philosophy is from Tennessee Williams. It was used in the movie Transsiberian. The quote from the movie taken from his quote is, “Kill all my demons and my angels may die too.” His quote is, “If I got rid of my demons, I’d lose my angels.” Part of my job is to take care of people as I am a supervisor and I need to help them grow. Improve. This quote says that everybody has good and bad sides....

Petra Němcová of the Czech Republic hung on to a palm tree as the ocean tried to swallow her up in the 2004 Great Indian Ocean tsunami.  Her fiancé nowhere to be seen but her hope was that he would find something to cling to.  That was not to be.

Petra walked away with injuries but she had her life.  The experience changed her and she dedicates her life to global communities and victims of natural disasters.  She began the Happy Hearts Fund which merged with David Campbell's, All Hands Volunteers in 2017 creating All Hands and Hearts.

All Hands and Hearts is a global response team dispatched to natural disaster sites around the world.

I live in South Africa and my background is in disaster management.

When a disaster hits we will monitor it online using social media to see what is being said by the country itself and by the people within that country.

From there we will decide on whether or not we're going to send in a team; our immediate response team.

We are there for the people who need us most.

It's about getting to the problem as soon as possible but staying as long as they need us and making sure that the solutions we implement are going to involve long-term sustainability.

We rebuild schools.  Children need a place to learn and a place that is safe. It is all about the future and by providing that school we know that they have hope for a future.

We can't control nature but we can control the actions that we take in a natural disaster.

Come Early, Stay Late

Archaeologist Anne M. Jensen

I’ve been an archaeologist in Alaska for thirty plus years and right now I’m the only northern Alaska full-time archaeologist.  I’m a senior scientist at Ukpeavik Inupiat Corporation which is an Alaskan native-owned corporation.

Being in the field as an archaeologist for 30 years I have seen many environmental changes.  I have a blog, Out of Ice and Time where you can find all sorts of information on archaeology but also the reality of the melting ice.  Ice preserves bones and artifacts but when the ice melts that’s it; those remains are part of the sea.

Somebody reported human remains up near Nuvuk.  We worked hard to recover them before they washed away.  This one individual dated back to 1000 A.D. or earlier and this person had grave goods intact. I thought perhaps these were the remains of a traveler who had died in that spot but the next year more remains were found.  Dennis O’Rourke, an ancient DNA researcher helped with dating of these remains.

Ice and Time Blog.  Our history is melting.

I’ve worked in the oil fields before and I’ve been employed on ships.  These are male dominated jobs but I did well and I succeeded.  But what I want to do is be a volcanologist.

My research was done at Mt. St. Helen’s and that was studying to see if there was any correlation with grain size distribution from the source down to where the mud flow was deposited.

Vanessa received Bachelor’s degrees in Geology and Oceanography from Humboldt State University, and later on a Master’s degree in Geology.  She is an environmental scientist.

Thomas DeMoss, entrepreneur “Leave your Mark” is our slogan.  We opened up The Recognition Place in 2012.

As a business model this is what we do.  Engrave.  Leave a mark.  People bring things in for engraving.  These are items that people want to give to someone else that are reminders of something special or for an appreciation but whatever the case, it is forever.

My Passion The wonder that metaphysics provides me is awesome.  Going to space isn’t profitable anymore unless we can mine an asteroid.  I do machining with my dad.  We made something for NASA and the space shuttle which I really liked doing.  It was an experience giving my intellect to humanity through my work with NASA.

My Community We want to do a mentorship here at the store.  It’s important to show young folks what a business is and what it takes.  There are so many things people don’t think about regarding owning a business but people often glamorize it.

Jason York, Entrepreneur The Forever in our Business ‘Forever’ is popular around here because what we do is forever.   It’s fun to leave your mark on something that’s going to be passed down for generations.  Having forever attached to us and our business, The Recognition Place, is pretty neat.

It’s Not Just About the Engraving Looking at how we’re doing things is important. What’s positive as opposed to what is negative.  It’s all part of learning how to do things better.  Thomas and I have an influence on the world and it’s a positive one.  We engrave but it’s more than that.

We started our business at a really young age and we’re successful businessmen because we’re responsible and dedicated.  It’s not just about the engraving the baby cup and it’s not just engraving the plaque but it’s leaving that mark for people forever within our community.

Science, Space and volunteering captured my heart Science and space made an imprint on me.  I’d like to make it to Mars some day.  It’s a stepping stone to look towards the stars as those were our navigation at one time.  It’s important to leave our positive imprint on the world.

“Leave your Mark” is our slogan.  We opened up The Recognition Place in 2012.

As a business model this is what we do.  People bring things in for engraving.  These are items that people want to give to someone else that are reminders of something special or for an appreciation but whatever the case, it is forever.

Personally I want to tutor somebody in astrophysics, math or science and that’s the impression I want to leave.  For me it’s about expanding and growing.

Our business is cyclical.  We leave a mark but people leave a mark on us with the stories they tell about the item, or the recipient or maybe the phrase they want engraved.

We measure twice cut once but in reality we measure fifteen or sixteen times for some items that are irreplaceable.

(Thomas is a business owner and husband to Rebecca)

My Passion

My passion is all about the future of humanity but way in the million years from now.  Everything today is just a short-sighted view of what is coming and I like to learn about what’s going to happen.  Watching and reading what astrophysics professors are doing or have done is pretty neat.  People like Carl Sagan.  Preparing myself to be tutored in this area and then tutor others is a passion of mine.

The wonder that metaphysics provides me is awesome.  Back in the 1600s people looked in the sky and saw something way out there.  Well they figured out how to see it by making all sorts of contraptions.  Just the awe that our brain can do and see something that is millions of miles away and I want to know how they did it.  It’s a surreal experience for me and I want to be a part of that and then pass it forward.  This is what it means for us and technology.

Going to space isn’t profitable anymore unless we can mine an asteroid.  But technology

Storyteller Dirk Wales, 87. Inspiring others with his stories Storyteller, Dirk Wales has been leaving positive imprints around the world for several decades. He is the author of novels, ‘how-to’ books, and children’s books including A Lucky Dog about Owney, the post office dog. He found a niche in movie making through his Rainbow Film productions. Rainbow Productions produced more than 70 films about anesthesia as well as children’s animated films and other genre of film. Chicago, Illinois USA is his birth city but his parents raised him in California. While living in California as a teenager he worked as a carhop where he waited on Frankie Laine, Nat King Cole, and Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman. With his earnings he enrolled at the University of California where he says his education provided him the foundation for his accomplishments. UCLA in California was the beginnings of the wonder of my own education. The only university that I could afford was University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) with the tuition being $18 a semester. One of my deepest and important inspirations of my life was being a theater student at UCLA. Ralph Freud, an actor, and film producer Kenneth Macgowan, were both instrumental in creating the theater department in which I attended five years later. This was the beginnings of the wonder of my own education. I learned how to be an actor, writer, script writer, set designer, director, producer, storyteller, gaffer, etc., and furthermore I did sixteen plays a year where I won best director’s award for two plays that I wrote. Early Working YearsWhen I graduated I landed a job with a motion-picture and television studio but soon I was a platoon leader in southern Germany guarding the border with Czechoslovakia against five divisions of Russian tanks. During my years at UCLA I attended ROTC classes and as a graduate student I served in the army as a Lieutenant. So off I went to Munich Germany as part of an armored infantry unit. I learned a lot. I might have been a Lieutenant but every other man in the unit knew more than me. My leadership is based on collaborating with the men because we trusted each other. Reading books opened up a whole new world for meGrowing up my parents didn’t encourage reading so I never really did any reading of books until I was in my thirties. Seven and eight decades when I grew up there were no art galleries or bookstores, except in New York. Well I moved to New York when I was in my thirties. New York was a great place for me because I experienced art galleries, plays, book stores, museums! I started reading all sorts of books and I never read anything so powerful and so meaningful until I read Call of the Wild by Jack London. This book changed everything for me. My life changed. I changed my life. Jack London’s book just meant so much to me and when I was in Pasadena I saw a photo at the Pasadena Museum of Gold Miners. Amongst the gold miners is a dog. This photo and London’s book inspired me and so I invented Jack London’s dog and I wrote a book. Jack London’s Dog is about a lost dog who befriends Jack during the gold rush in the 1890s. It’s a story about friendship and adventure. I’ve made some wonderful friends because of this book. Jack London’s club asked me to speak and since then I’ve joined the club and am grateful for all of the experiences and friends I’ve made from this.

I’m Obsessed with Work and Writing and I love storytellingI got an idea from three pages from a non-fiction story about a dispute in the 1800s between Egypt and France. A giraffe was given to the King of France. My book is The Giraffe Who Walked to Paris. A Lucky Dog is my best-selling book which is a true story about the travels of Owney, a stray puppy at the Albany Post Office. Owney became the official mascot of the U.S. Rail Mail...

I try to visualize for people on Instagram that it’s not difficult to go in the outdoors. My mission is to tell people that you can make it outdoors even with this lifestyle of work; having a job. You don’t need to be a full-time adventurer in order to have a nice experience in the woods. Step outside of your house and look at the opportunities around you. Take the time to relax and enjoy a nice walk. The outdoors don’t have to be expensive. Army Imprints (Note: The army in Norway is compulsory. It’s a conscript military meaning it’s required; however, only those men and women whom are the best skilled and motivated are selected.) I wanted to make more of the army so I started the Non-commissioned Officer program. It was really lots of fun and I ended up spending four years in the Norwegian Army. My assignment was border patrol between Russia and Norway. Up there at the border it is very cold. When I was working as a Sargent I was a team commander. I trained soldiers to be border patrol. Our skills were in observations, patrolling, and learning skills in cold weather. A soldier must have the cold-weather skills to take care of oneself and fellow soldiers. Sometimes we did border patrol with the use of snowmobiles. Our clothing was very good winter clothing such as Goretex and other really good material. All that clothing made me feel like Michelin Man. Being active kept me from freezing. My last year in the army I worked as a commander at a station where we were four officers and twenty-five soldiers. I really enjoyed training the soldiers. The situation between Russia and Norway is calm so I didn't find myself scared. Actually, much of the patrol was keeping Norwegians from passing the border into Russia and also the other way too. Illegal immigrants. The army prepared me for real life. Emergency Room Getting an education beyond the army was important to me so I took a course in Germany in First-Aid training. It was something I enjoyed and so after the army I enrolled in nursing school. I’m now in the emergency room going on three years there. I love this type of service and work. It’s not a routine so everyday is a new day for me. My...

Darlene Matz, mega knitter but also commissioned Pastor for the Presbyterian church in Kaktovik Alaska Knitting is relaxing. I’m from northern Minnesota where I lived on the reservation. Today I am a commissioned Presbyterian pastor and I serve Kaktovik Presbyterian church. Being a grandmother is remarkable. My special phrase is, ‘Alone we cannot change the world but we can make it a better place for one other person.’ I love helping people and being with people. Each hat is UniqueI read Little House on the Prairie books. They knitted and I wanted to also learn to knit. The lady I learned from is left handed. Being that I am right handed my knitting is different from other knitters.  In 2005 my mother died and I had just started making hats after not knitting for many years. My stepfather said to me, “how many of those are you going to do anyway?” My answer was 25.  Sadly, my stepfather laughed at me. Well that made me more determined to do more than 25. Since 2012 I’ve made more than 3,000 hats. Knitting is fun. I make hats for the homeless and the villages in northern Alaska. I’m free with my time to do it. I don’t want to sit at my house. Being involved with people makes me happy. Once I finish a hat it is done. I don’t deliver the hats because I can’t travel to all of the villages, therefore I cannot see the happiness and smiles from the children and adults. But the response is not important.  In the native culture it means more if something is hand done and I make each hat unique so people can take pride in wearing it. A Sewing Machine that Brought Rags to RichesWhen I was in Tanzania where my husband was working there was a woman who had several children and no money. Her home was made out of banana leaves. I wanted to help her but I didn’t want to just give money. From my inquiries I learned that she liked to sew but she no longer had the means to do so. Matata is her name and I bought a sewing machine for her. Getting her started cost about $200.00 with an extra $50 for clothes and food. I felt good about the experience; in fact it is the biggest impact for me to see.  That little offering changed her life and the community’s as well because that seamstress became a community leader out there. She’s making changes for the better.   Touching people’s lives in simple ways is fulfilling. http://pbyukon.org/churches.html (Link to the different churches that Darlene's ministry serves in the Yukon area) Listen to other Your Positive Imprint episodes: https://yourpositiveimprint.com/episodes/ Please sign up! for Your Positive Imprint email updates! Growing up in Brasil – Marcos Mendonca

Traveling is a love of mine and one of my favorite quotes is from Tolkien.  “Not all who wander are lost.”  I love that quote.

São Paulo Brasil (Brazil) is where I was born.  It’s like life in the big city in America and Europe with Latin influences.

Traveling Puts Things in Perspective

Above all the most important thing for me about traveling is the culture.

To me traveling is very fulfilling.  Hence the more I see the less I know.

How can I live my entire life without knowing how people do things and how they live?

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

During my three and a half months stay in Africa I got robbed four times nevertheless I still love going back there.  It brings to me a different perspective but of course I don’t like that I got robbed.

In spite of what happened I still have a positive imprint about Africa.

In the end, the feeling I have about people in general is much more positive than negative.

My Positive Imprint and Culture Sharing

I can share my perspective.  My positive imprint.  So I wrote a book.  It’s in my mother language of Portuguese.  The title translates to English basically as, “Can I get Some Help Here right Now?”  It’s a humorous title.

I want people to know that it’s OK to travel and to not be afraid of different cultures.

Can I Get Some Help Here Right Now? Gente, Ajuda!

I went to see wild hyenas in Somalia and I was in for a lifetime of surprises.  The hyena jumped on my back and broke my belt.  I felt something harsh on my buttocks.  Worst place!  I felt what I thought was his teeth.  Maybe the nails.  I couldn’t tell.

There was blood in my underwear and I freaked out.

São Paulo Brasil (Brazil) is where I was born.  It’s like life in the big city in America and Europe with Latin influences.

For a big city it was safe. Not like today.  I used to ride bikes all of the time.  Unfortunately I don’t see that happening much anymore.

I had a healthy childhood where I played sports, went to school.   My traveling was limited to visiting relatives.  Brasil is a huge country therefore it took a long time to get anywhere.

The teachers in Brasil really want to put you on the...

Part 2 of Repair Cafe

“The Repair Café was initiated by https://www.linkedin.com/in/martinepostma (Martine Postma). Since 2007, she has been striving for sustainability at a local level in many ways. Martine organised the very first Repair Café in Amsterdam, on October 18, 2009. It was a great success.

PART 2 OF THIS PODCAST, Repair Cafe

Jackie Carter Jackie Carter is the Moscow Public Library’s Repair Cafe coordinator.

Right to Repair Movement

“The Right to Repair movement is the idea that manufacturers have this policy where if something goes wrong with an item you purchase you have to take the item to them for repairs.  That can be a big cost to you.  You are not allowed to fix it.”

“If you attempt to fix it yourself it voids the warranty.  But people are saying wait a minute.  I bought this.  I own this.  I should be able to do what I want with it.  I should be able to choose whom I want to repair it.”

“The event is also interactive in the sense of watch me how I do this and then you try it.”

“People come away with confidence to try things on their own.”

Planned Obsolescence

“There’s a concept most people aren’t familiar with because we are programmed to see things as disposable.  Planned obsolescence.  When something is manufactured it’s designed to fail in a couple of years so the consumer is forced to replace it.  We take it for granted.  That’s how it is.  We accept it.  But consumers should not be forced to replace something due to planned obsolescence.”

The Event Dale

“I brought in a paper shredder that runs in reverse but wont’ run forward.  This kind gentleman Cory is fixing it for me. My goal is not to have to replace it and now I don’t have to.”

Tammy

“I brought in an older glass dish repair.  This dish is from my grandmother and recently the dish on the dish was beheaded.  They fixed it here.  I am so happy. I also brought in my jacket with a  broken zipper.  I thought the whole zippier would need to be replaced.  But they fixed the pull!  It was as simple as that.”

Cory

I’m a mechanic.  I spent most of my career working on cars.  Today I a am a motorcycle mechanic.  I always loved to tear things apart. I heard about this and I wanted to tear other peoples stuff apart and fix it!  People are real happy.  I’m having fun.  I’m pro reusing of things.  I don’t want things to be thrown away when something can be easily fixed.  Keep things out of the landfill.”

Cory Lemper, Repair Cafe Volunteer

Welding, fabrication, machining and repairs.

Jennifer

I have one piece of jewelry which is lovely and I wore it a lot.  The bottom came apart and it’s been sitting in my jewelry box for three years.  I got excited when this was advertised.  Well look.  It is fixed.  It’s so wonderful.   My necklace is going to have a second life.  That’s exciting.”

Rochelle, Repair Cafe Clothing and Textiles Volunteer

(When I walked up to Rochelle she was teaching mending skills to a patron.)

“I think it’s important to share things with people and show them how to fix their things.”

“Repair Cafe is important in terms of community and people teaching and people learning.”

Don’t Throw It Away

“It’s deeply unsustainable for the earth for us to continue throwing things away when they don’t need to be thrown away.  There are alternatives to that.”

“It’s also important for sustainability for honoring the workers who created these clothes whether it be in Bangladesh, Nepal or wherever.  They created clothing and textiles under unsafe working conditions.  What is it like for those people who are manufacturing our clothes?”

“I think being responsible stewards of the materials once we have them is honoring them.”

“Menders are having this conversation around the world.  But people might not have thought about this before.”

“Break your throw away habits.”

Not competing with professional repair specialists

The Repair Café Foundation sometimes gets asked whether access to free repair get-togethers is competing with professional repair specialists. The answer is; quite the opposite. Organisers want to use Repair Cafés across the whole country to focus attention on the possibility of getting things repaired. Visitors are frequently advised to go to the few professionals still around.

Furthermore, people who visit Repair Cafés are not usually customers of repair specialists. They say that they normally throw away broken items because paying to have them repaired is, in general, too expensive. At the Repair Café they learn that you don’t have to throw things away; there are alternatives."

"I've started the first Repair Cafe here in Idaho, USA."

"I try to do as much as I can to contribute to conservation efforts."

"I read about it three years ago and I knew it was perfect for my community here in Moscow.  Sustainability is a really big deal here."

"I forgot about it actually because I'm the type of person who can throw a party and nobody comes."

"Two years after reading about it I attended a library conference.  One of the workshops offered was on this very thing.  People from a library in Alberta, Canada lead that workshop.  I learned how to set up a Repair Cafe.  That's how I started."

"The board here at the Latah County Library District was open to this and excited.  Everybody has been very supportive."

"This idea is growing globally.  On the website for Repair Cafe there is a global map that you can see where they're located."

"It's not expensive to run a Repair Cafe.  My biggest expense is the venue.  I purchased basic tools but volunteers brought their own tools.  They have been so enthusiastic!  One volunteer brought in bags of tools.  I did invest in various types of glues."

“It’s been an interesting process because the materials are different.  I’ve had to really think about how to do this.  There is so much to take into consideration.  The catwalk for instance cannot have a slippery platform.”

“I’ve built hospitals and buildings but I’ve never had to think about an animal feeling comfortable and secure about its habitat.”

“The sight-lines for visitors need to be good so collaborated with others regarding the design.”

“What struck me in a positive way is the relationship the zookeepers have with the animals they’re responsible for.  I got to witness this and that is something that I take with me.  It’s pretty incredible.”

“During construction the animals didn’t get to go in their yards and they were going to have jackhammer sounds and other sounds that could be uncomfortable for them.  I didn’t want to be one that brought stress to the animals.”

“When we were working a jackhammer or other loud item the animals would get stressed and I had to think of ways to keep the stress down for them.  I juggled schedules and times.”

“I love animals.  Doing this project took more creative thought because I was in charge of what will be the life-long home for a living creature.  Their home needs to be comfortable but also secure for them, the veterinarians, zookeepers, and the visitors.”

“This was an opportunity of a lifetime and I will never have that again.  The experience certainly changed me in positive ways.  I won’t forget the calmness of animals when they saw their zookeeper.”

"I had to think of ways to keep the stress down for them.  When we were working a jackhammer or other item with loud sounds we would do it when the animal was inside eating or at the veterinarian....

Marion's Kodiak Organic Tomatos-Greenhouse grown

"Grow organic food you want to eat."

Marion Owen lives in Kodiak Alaska where she cares for her well-established organic garden.  She grows foods she wants to eat.

"The cool climate allows the kale to be sweeter.  Green onions are huge!"

"I live in Kodiak Alaska where there's the changing light and cooler climate.  It's OK to put things in the compost pile. I learn from experience."

"I grow food I want to eat but I also want to provide food for the late pollinators.  I don't just garden for me but for other people, insects, birds.  It's all inclusive."

Marion saves bumble bees who get caught up in a deep freeze.  Hear how she does it on the podcast.

"Gardening is relaxing and reflective.  I worked on a tug boat.  I was getting tired of going out to sea.  I had an internal conversation years ago.  What do I want to do?  Well two things came to my mind.  Photography and gardening."

"When I moved to Alaska and started my garden there was no dirt.  Well I can't have dirt delivered so I had to make my own.  The traditional way of composting would take too many years.  I researched it.  Hot composting was how I made dirt."

"I add the green stuff and brown stuff and in a few days it heats up.  I turned it and it would cool down, then heat up again.  In a few weeks, not years, I had dirt!"

"Sharing what I do is important.  I've written for Alaska Magazine and I've also submitted photographs.  I've been a keynote speaker at garden conferences and if I can garden in Kodiak then you can do it wherever you are in the world."

"My garden is part of the earth.  I think it's important to know where your food comes from because it's not all clean or healthy.  Food security.  Try supporting your local farmers' market and talk to the growers."

"In Kodiak I used to write a gardening column in the Kodiak Daily Mirror.  The articles are available online."

" I also am an advocate of community outreach.  I help others to grow their garden and I also do a Veggies at Work program.  Anybody can do this.  I approach a business and ask them to purchase materials to have a raised box or bed at their work site.  I plant and harvest vegetables to take to the food bank.

"There's more connections and more positive imprints with Veggies at Work program. Employees are responsible for the vegetables through watering and weeding.  They get to leave their desk and enjoy being outside."

Marion's Garden

"I love photography.  One of my favorite things is to not have an agenda for my photography.  I want to be open to the gifts that are shown to me."

"I have a bed and breakfast.  Cliffhouse Bed and Breakfast.  When I take patrons out on the boat for a photography class I want to help people bring home the memories and the best experience with photography.  But also food.  I use what is being produced in my garden for the Galley Gourmet Dinner Cruises."

"When I am out walking I use all of my senses.  The best writers say to use all of your senses.  We forget about sound and smell and touch.  Check in when you go for a walk. How do the trees or the grass feel?"

"Puffins are a favorite bird of mine to watch and to also photograph.  They are such interesting birds.  They spend a good seven months or longer out at sea.  They are more comfortable as a bird swimming in the water than flying.  They have to beat their wings around 400 beats per minute or they fall to the earth."

"Their beautiful beak colors are for the dating game. They lose their colorful sheath in late August.  Kodiak has the Tufted puffin and the Horned puffin."

"Humans think in terms of time but...

Richard East and Willow, Van Cat Meow Travelling Australia

An interesting read

During Willow’s and my travels I lost a cousin to Motor Neurone Disease.  We weren’t close and a reason for that is because we go through life saying, ‘oh ya, let’s get together soon’ and it never happens.  I realized that life is too short and I need to do what I say.

Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells - neurones - controlling the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow; undergo degeneration and die.  It is a form of ALS.

Rich just released a book about his struggles before traveling and he shares anecdotes.  He also shares some of his adventures with Willow on their journey around Australia.  The book,

"Van Cat Meow: A Lost Man. A Rescue Cat. A Road Trip like No Other."

His travels with Willow are entertaining and his love for his pet comes through loudly and clearly.  Rich’s positive imprints are reaching around the globe.

Andrew Bracken and Partnerships

Andrew’s work takes him all over the globe to more than 20 countries.  He is the partnership manager for “Feed the Future, Partnering for Innovation.”

"My inspirational word is “partnerships” because it’s in my job title but it means, for me, bringing together those who normally don’t work together."

Andrew in Kenya - improved sorghum seed

"I create public and private partnerships to invest in sustainable agriculture for small farmers across the globe."

"My job helps to provide real income to farmers and not just for subsistence living.  Farmers also learn new farming practices and new technologies."

"I speak English, Spanish and Portuguese.  It’s important to speak the farmers’ language because they need to be able to get across their needs and their dreams.  It’s more important for me to listen and to understand those needs.”

Hybrid cabbage seedlings planted in Zambia

“For post-harvest loss it is important to help the farmers learn ways to keep crop quality edible.  Examples are improving transportation or using different sacks based on the temperatures.”

“In Zambia we’re working on a tomato seedling project.  Many times we work with universities within the country.  They do research on which seed is appropriate for specific areas within a country.  Altitude, climate and insects play a role in the research.”

“I like to see the product in action which means getting back in the bush.  It’s valuable to see the people who are the ones intended to receive the help.  I like to learn the cultures.  In Malawi the culture is very alive with the Chewa ethnic groups and traditional clothing.”

“In Guatemala we’re working on a potato seed production project.  I was there in the highlands and my Spanish skills weren’t helpful as the Mayan culture is well alive.  It is so interesting.  I love the different cultures I experience.  I enjoy sharing those cultures with others as well.  It’s important.”

“With the funds we’ve reached over a million farmers world-wide.  My own projects have reached about 500,000 farmers.”

“It’s a joy to know that I’m in this position where I have the resources to make an impact like this.  It’s humbling.”

“This work has shown me new and collaborative ways to work with people.”

Andrew's positive imprint is global.

When Andrew is in the USA he runs marathons.  He ran his first Boston Marathon in 2018.

Happy Trails and Happy Tales from Iditarod Racer, author, adventurer and storyteller, Mary Shields. Mary Shields entered the Iditarod in 1974 being the first woman to complete the Iditarod race.

I came to Alaska in 1965 to work for the Camp Fire Girls as a counselor.  When the summer was over I returned to Wisconsin.  I kept repeating Robert Service’s last line in his poem, ‘And I want to go back—and I will.’  And I did.  And I’ve never left.

I was born a city girl.  But I wanted to live what Henry David Thoreau talked about in his books so I lived in the rugged wilderness where I learned and loved to mush with a dog team.

‘I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.’—Henry David Thoreau

I was told I would never make it.  One man yelled at me, ‘You’d better turn around now. You’ll never make it to Nome!’  But I did.

Iditarod Racer Turned Storyteller Mary Shields turned her positive imprint of opening the door for other women to enter male dominated races into another positive imprint.  She began a successful writing career, authoring several children’s books that are Alaska’s classics.

“Can Dogs Talk?”  and “Secret Messages-Training a Happy Dog” are a couple of her books.  The illustrator is Donna Gates. Her other book, “Sled Dog Trails” captures her Alaskan dog team and wilderness experiences.

Mary continues to run the team.  She also loves organic gardening.  Her roof is a sod roof which insulates her home.

…and another positive imprint is sharing her stories and educating tourists.  She invites tourists to visit her dogs and to learn about caring for dog teams.  She shares her tales from the trails through her charismatic storytelling.

I lived in the wilderness to really experience what Thoreau was talking about.  My adventures began when the conductor held onto my hand as I jogged along and when he thought I had my balance he let go.

Sometimes people go off on these adventures and nobody ever sees them again and I was a perfect candidate for not being seen again.

My friends delivered three dogs to me on the train to help pull the sled for my chores.    The dogs arrived with a special note of instructions.

Listen to the podcast to hear what that note said and how Mary began her legacy in dog sled racing.

Joe Redington, Tom Johnson and Gleo Hyuck pushed to organize the Iditarod.  Redington had two reasons for the long-distance mushers’ race.  The first reason was to save the sled dog culture and the Alaskan Huskies.   Both were being replaced with the introduction of the snowmobiles.  The second reason was to preserve the historical Iditarod Trail between Seward and Nome.

Cinnamon Sugar and Spice Cafe, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

My podcast launch party is being held at Cinnamon Sugar and Spice Cafe located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  It is owned by Kanella Chronis.  This bonus episode features two guests.  Kanella Chronis, the owner, and also James Garrigan who runs the Cinnamon Sugar and Spice cooking classes held at the cafe.

"I am of Greek descent.  My grandmother instilled values and also taught me how to cook.  Her name was also Kanella."

Kanella translates to Cinnamon in English.

“I want to be a part of the neighborhood.  A neighborhood cafe is where folks can enjoy the food in a fun atmosphere.”

"There's also more to me than the cafe.  Once a month I help out All Faiths Receiving Home.  It is a children’s advocacy center for children whom are removed from their home for various reasons.  Counselors there treat the whole family unit.  I've set up ways for cafe patrons to donate if they wish."

Kanella Chronis

Owner                         Cinnamon Sugar and Spice Cafe

Advocate for helping children

James is the lead cook for the cooking classes.

“Cook what you want to eat.”

“The classes are a hands-on approach where every step is shown.  We use recipe cards.  It’s also never fun to cook when you’re hungry so during the classes we eat!”

“I got started in doing these cooking classes from a visit to a Kindergarten class.  I was a guest baker for my child’s Kindergarten class and I had so much fun teaching them.  They had fun.  I wanted to do this for a living.”

The positive imprint came from Kindergartners.  That is awesome!!

"The cooking classes are for adults and children.  The children’s classes are for nine to fourteen years of age.  I also do a ‘Kids Camp.’

“I love the Kids Camp.  The Camp is for two or three days and for about three hours each day.  A favorite has been the crepes with kids.”

“They enjoy the cooking and creative aspects of it.  There’s even competitions.”

Kanella says, “Yes, and James is so good with the children.  He will even showcase the winner’s creation during a weekend to honor the winner.”

Chef James Garrigan
