Without a dad or close friends, Pat lived a very "alone life" that opened him up to negative influences when trying to connect with others. He had his first drink of alcohol when he was nine, he first smoked weed at 11 and he was a drug addict by 17 and homeless. Ten years later he found himself on LA's skid row weighing 96 pounds and ready to face his addictions. Pat gained the understanding that love and compassion is what others need in order to recover.

Batman was Tom's favorite hero as a kid which inspired him to be a cop when he grew up. But it wasn't easy. A flaming police car, a bankruptcy and self-doubt plagued the first year of his career in law enforcement.
Over his career, Tom watched an entire family die from addiction and knew the solution was larger than himself.
