Welcome to Bonn Park, where podcast hosts Marshall Ward and Sara Geidlinger chat in-depth with fascinating people living, working, and creating in Waterloo Region -- an area known as the "creative capital of Canada." Each episode features a different guest, with artists, writers, experts, entrepreneurs, and other creative folk talking about their motivations, inspirations, and aspirations. Marshall is a longtime newspaper columnist who has interviewed Hollywood celebrities and local characters; Sara is a photographer who loves to find out what makes people tick. Together, their show emulates the feel of sparking up a conversation with an interesting stranger in a park, which is how Marshall and Sara met (in Waterloo's Bonn Park) and discovered their shared interest in Waterloo Region's creative community.

Have you ever wondered what happens to your Blue Box recyclables after it leaves your curb?
On this episode of Bonn Park, coordinator Kathleen Barsoum takes Sara Geidlinger and Marshall Ward on an eye-opening behind-the-scenes tour of the landfill and sorting centre at the Region of Waterloo Waste Management plant. “The secret is in the sorting and good recycling practices start at home,” says Barsoum. “There are good success stories out there that are not being reported on and we are one of them. Here in the Region of Waterloo, over 90% of the collected Blue Box material gets recycled.” Recycling is a proud tradition in Waterloo Region, as the first-ever curbside Blue Box program started in Kitchener in 1983, and now millions all over the world are recycling. Waterloo Region-based Canadian/Egyptian artist and designer, Stephanie Boutari’s bright, bold, and colourful murals and installations celebrate the beauty of balance and simplicity.
Born and raised in Bahrain, Boutari came to Canada 15 years ago for her post-secondary education, studying architecture and completing her Master’s degree at the University of Waterloo. A cooperative partner at BOKO, a design-build studio and workshop in New Hamburg founded by her husband Adam Schwartzentruber, whom she frequently collaborates with, Boutari’s eye-catching downtown public artworks can be found in places like Goudies Lane, Abe Erb, Settlement, and inside Vidyard, a converted historical building near Victoria Park. Originally hailing from Winnipeg, Mark Walton is the founder of Foto:RE and a founding director of FLASH|Contemporary Photography HERE, a festival of photography in Waterloo Region.
He is also the curator of a large (50,000+) collection of photography by Stan Rosenthall, an urban and commercial photographer who worked in the heyday of the 1960's New York City ad scene.
On Bonn Park with Sara Geidlinger and Marshall Ward, Walton talked about creating the newly minted magazine, foto:RE|VIEW, as a means of sharing the work of the best photographers in Waterloo Region and beyond.
“Fresh off the success of a solo show at a community gallery, I was suffering a serious bout of imposter’s syndrome,” said Walton, a musician who turned to photography when his wife and artistic director Lisa O’Connell bought him a DSLR camera in 2005.
“Not only had I been shooting for a very short period of time, but all of my experience with photography was limited to the digital realm. I had a very receptive audience, but felt I was undeserving of it. foto:RE was founded as a selfish act. I needed mentorship, and I had to seek it out.”

A fierce advocate for regional theatre artists and winner of numerous awards and honours, Lisa O’Connell is the founding artistic director of Pat the Dog Theatre Creation, a catalyst for new works of theatre and PlaySmelter, Northern Ontario’s New Work Theatre Festival.
During a wide-ranging conversation on Bonn Park with Sara Geidlinger and Marshall Ward, O’Connell talked about Pat the Dog, Canadian theatre, and the upcoming Femme Folks Fest, a new month-long festival dedicated to and in celebration of women identified and presenting, launching throughout Waterloo region in March 2020 during International Women’s Month, celebrated in many countries around the world.
“It is a month when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political,” said O’Connell.
“It is essentially a month to raise awareness for the impact women have made on history, and to highlight the needs and issues many women face worldwide. It is a focal point for the championing of women's rights and gender equality. At present, there is no consistent large-scale programming dedicated to women in Waterloo region to coincide with International Women’s Month. We believe it’s time.”

Sara Fleiszig is an experimental fine art photographer and “The Girl Who Soaks Her Prints.”
In her recent body of work Soaked, Fleiszig’s organic process involves interacting with the subject, colour, and form and exploring the relationship between femininity and liquidity.
A graduate of Sheridan’s Bachelor of Photography program, she is an artist who follows her own intuition, constantly exploring and experimenting with different liquids and soaking methods using female bodily fluids like blood, sweat, urine, and tears.
Most impressive is Fleiszig’s ability to harmonize the initial photograph with layer upon layer of colour while losing edges and pulling areas together using bold value changes of light and dark, outlined magnificently by soft lines.
On this episode of Bonn Park, Fleiszig sits down with Sara Geidlinger and Marshall Ward to discuss her automatic and responsive soaking process, imagery and abstract interpretation, and the subtle art of suggesting quietness, power, and confidence.

Christa Wise, a science student at the University of Guelph, majoring in zoology, is one of thousands of Canadians living with Lyme disease, an infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks.
Marshall Ward and Sara Geidlinger chatted at length with her about her past five years living with Lyme disease, and the many symptoms and challenges that can accompany it.
"My main symptoms were debilitating headaches, chronic fatigue, and an inability to think clearly which is known as 'brain fog,' along with lesser symptoms like joint and muscle pain," said Wise.
Despite seeing specialists, it took many appointments and tests before Wise finally received an accurate diagnosis, thanks to a Waterloo-based naturopath who suggested she get tested for Lyme disease in the United States.
On Bonn Park, Wise, who is currently a Director at Large for the National Wildlife Rehabilitation Foundation, shares her long, arduous and emotional journey towards recovery, the support she received, and her passion for biology and nature.

Video game guru and Youtube sensation, SeeJayAre may just have the largest number of video games in Canada, with nearly 6,000 games and over 100 systems in his collection.
Scrounging garage sales with his young sons, flea markets, thrift stores, Craigslist, and Kijiji for the past 10 years, practically 95 percent of his collection was found in the wild.
“I buy big bundles of video games, keep what I need, flip the rest and put that money back in the collection,” SeeJayAre said in his Game Room Tour 2020 on his Youtube channel.
On Bonn Park, Marshall Ward and Sara Geidlinger sat down with SeeJayAre for an in-depth chat about the thrill of the hunt, building an audience, retrogaming, and his extraordinary game room that looks like a 20th century pop-culture museum, with the sights and sounds of a bright, noisy arcade.

Paige Warner is a Waterloo region-based singer-songwriter with a powerhouse voice and an artistry beyond her years.
Marshall Ward and Sara Geidlinger sit down with her for an in-depth conversation about writing, recording, and her catchy new single, I Don’t Need Boys, with its fun and sassy message of empowerment, and nearly 15,000 streams on Spotify.
“I wanted this song to be very easy to digest because it does tackle quite a serious and relatable topic,” said the 22-year-old musician from Heidelberg. “The happiness the song conveys shows the between-the-lines message that I am perfectly happy and content in life, rather than a message of bitterness or anger toward boys.”
On Bonn Park, Warner performs a couple songs live in studio and said she sees a growing trend of strong, confident, genuine female artists in pop music today.
“Artists like H.E.R., Jessie Reyez, Billie Eilish, and Kehlani all came onto the scene with such distinct sounds and boldness,” she said. “I also have so much respect for artists like Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga who are working to change people’s mindsets and spread acceptance and positivity in the world.”
Although Warner has not achieved the fame of those inspirations — not yet, anyway — we believe her music is every bit as captivating as theirs.
