Full Throttle Podcast: Recent Episodes

Lorin Wilson

Conversations about, and reflections on, how to improve oneself to be of service to the world. Topics of emphasis will be on fitness, health, philosophy, psychology, spirituality, vulnerability, and different economic modalities (among many other topics that could create a path to self-improvement/global improvement.) The goal of the podcast is to manifest constructive conversations about how to create a better world for as many people as possible. The goal is to “square the circle.” Squaring the circle means trying to create a square and a circle that have the same area. This is an agreed-upon impossible geometric problem to solve as pi is a transcendental number. Even with that, however, mathematicians have still dedicated countless hours towards getting as close as possible to squaring the circle. What this metaphor represents is that the goal isn’t to get it “correct” or be “perfect.” No, the goal is to strive to improve towards something “better” or towards the “transcendent.” I would personally define this, at this point in my life, as more empathy, happiness, love, and understanding in the world.

Lorin and Xavier are back together for another episode! After each of their individual endeavors got in the way a little bit, the boys are back to give you the content you've been wanting. In this episode we talk about some running news, how the NCAA sporting landscape is changing due to student-athletes getting paid via sponsors, Aleksandr Sorokin going for his own 24-hour running world record (trying to average 7:06 per mile for 24 hours!), and what we have been up to over the last 2 months or so.

Xavier goes into his training and the content he has been feeding himself - all about personal development, performance, and winning culture.

Lorin talks a little about the books he has been reading - Purpose Driven Life, Beyond Order, and Endure. Then he goes into how his training for the California International Marathon has evolved since his achilles injury at Tunnel Hill 100.

Hope you enjoy and as always, thanks for listening!

Lorin does a solo cast where he talks about his training for the week (he is currently training for the CIM Marathon on December 4, 2022 in Sacramento), the book he is reading "Designing The Mind," which focuses on using mindfulness to develop self-control over one's emotions which leads to a cascade of benefits such as lowered anxiety and stress, before concluding with his thoughts on the message he received in Church this week - finding your purpose, equipping yourself to serve God through developing your purpose, always be learning/moving towards your purpose, and taking everything in micro-chunks whether that's one step or one rep at a time. Win the moment you're in. You won't always be perfect, however, you can always find joy in the present.

In this fun episode, Xavier and Lorin are joined by former guest Colby McCune as well as Marty Luevano, brother of former guest, Moses Luevano (Episode 6: Reflecting on the 2009 NXN Championship).

This episode stresses how crucial the Summer is to setting yourself up for a successful Fall XC season (Summer miles lead to Fall smiles ; the Fall holds no secrets to how Summer was spent) and some tips on how to go about calendaring out your Summer training. Also, the Summer is a GREAT opportunity, THE opportunity to experiment in your training to try to make big fitness jumps (both physically and mentally) as racing is limited/non-existent in the Summer. We dive into the concept of polarized training, the stress-recovery principle, progressive overload, mileage, different types of Summer workouts (broken tempos, tempos/PPMs, drills, hill circuits, long runs etc), recommended dynamic drills, recommended foot strengthening, weight training basics, orienting yourself around goals, tips to stay motivated, the power of daily doubles, logging your workouts, and much more! We hope you enjoy!

In this episode we dive into some running recaps including our thoughts on former guest Natosha Rogers qualifying for her first world team in the 10k after a DECADE of ups and downs.

We talk about Colin Sahlman running the 3rd fastest US High School mile time of 3:56 and Jakob Ingebrigtsen

We also shout out former guests Rachel Tomajczyk and Drew Tomajczyk for their recent running performances - Rachel running in Spain and Drew for getting his strava segment back for Benson!

Our last shout out goes to Nick Bare, founder and CEO of Bare Performance Nutrition for breaking 2:50 in the marathon on top of the continued success of his supplement company.

After that we go into what we have been up to, including X deciding to stay in Flagstaff, Lorin passing his first part of the four part CPA exam, moving towards obstacles rather than running away from them, not being deterred by seemingly slow progress, and Lorin and X’s plan’s to get involved in the community to try to address the economic situation in Flag.

We conclude with a passage from Tim Grover’s (Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryants, and Dwayne Wades fitness trainer/mindset coach) book “Relentless.”

In this episode, we start out with a few shout outs and some current running news. Topics include high schooler Gary Martin running a 3:57 mile at his district meet to break a 57 year old Jim Ryun record, the new NAZ Elite team structure/business strategy, and a salute to those who graduated both high school and college this past week.

We then delve into Xavier getting back into his training and how he mentally got back to being motivated to train as a result of being of service to others in coaching his athletes. We also go into Xavier's goal of running a 10k later this year faster than when he competed at the D1 NCAA XC meet a decade ago.

Lorin then presents what he has been working on - consulting at work, getting involved with non-profits in Flagstaff, Summer adventures to Glacier National Park, and training for the California International Marathon.

We conclude with a brief introduction to the book "Winning" by Tim Grover. Which we highly recommend as summer reading to get you ready to completely dominate your goals the back half of 2022. From timgrover.com "Tim S. Grover is the CEO of ATTACK Athletics, Inc., founded in 1989. World-renowned for his legendary work with elite champions and Hall of Famers, including Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and hundreds other NFL, MLB, NBA, and Olympic athletes, he is the preeminent authority on the science and art of physical and mental dominance and achieving excellence."

In this episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with and getting to know Rachel Tomajczyk (formerly Rachel Johnson). Rachel will never say it herself so we will brag for her here. Rachel was the 2010 High School Nike Cross Country National champion and a 2x Foot Locker national qualifier, finishing 2nd in 2010.

Rachel then went on to run for Baylor University under the tutelage of coach Todd Harbour. In addition to being a 6x All American, 14x All Big 12 Conference, and setting Baylor track records for the 3 km indoor, 5 km indoor, 3 km steeplechase outdoor, 5 km outdoor, and the 10 km outdoor, Rachel talks about the "holistic" coaching approach in which emphasis is on the full development of the person, not just athletic performance.

In addition to talking about the evolution of Rachel's physical training and psychology, she openly shares about the challenges she had transitioning to college/pro running, overcoming an eating disorder, and how a sports psychologist introducing her to visualization (in addition to her family, faith, and friends) allowed her to persevere. Rachel continues to heavily use visualization to this day when attacking any goal she has.

Post her time at Baylor, Rachel went on to run professionally for ASICS, spending some time being coached in South Carolina, before moving to Flagstaff and being coached by half-marathon American record holder, Ryan Hall.

Rachel is currently a professional trail runner sponsored by Merrell and will be competing in Europe in the Golden Trail Series. She is also a running coach with Run Free Training and can assist with putting together training plans, race strategies, or even just motivating you to be your best self. If you need help with additional coaching or motivation, reach out to her on Instagram! Rachel and her husband, Drew, are also currently working on writing a children's book series together which we very much look forward to reading and recommending!

Lastly, we dive a little bit into who Rachel is - her thoughts on why we love sports so much, her favorite books, music, trails in Flagstaff, and her favorite adventures.

We hope you enjoy!

Undersized, underdog, who rose up to be a Lion. We are beyond blessed to have had a conversation with Ryan Miller. Ryan is a wealth of experience and knowledge as he has competed at every level of the sport of running. Ryan was part of the same 2009 High School NXN National Championship team that was featured in episode 6 with Colby McCune and Moses Luevano. Ryan provides his perception of that magical national championship experience, how he describes the culture of that team, and which stories/lessons made the most impact on him. He goes into the ups and downs of that season and how it was only just a prelude to prepare him for the ups and downs of life.

Ryan was very gracious and open about the challenges he has faced throughout his life - including the suicide of a high school teammate, battling an eating disorder that almost took his life during the first two years of college, and more.

In addition to the low points, Ryan shares his high points - walking onto the Texas A&M XC/Track team and becoming a scoring member for the SEC championship team, being a 2 x Olympic Trials Qualifier in the marathon w/ a marathon PR of 2:14 (5 minute 7 second per mile pace for 26.2 miles), getting a Golden Ticket to the Western States 100 (super bowl of 100 milers), getting married to his lovely wife Lacie, the birth of their son Maverick, and transitioning from a career in engineering/project management/banking, to being a full time running coach.

Ryan continues to have that underdog mentality and is more motivated than ever to prove to himself and the world, just what his limits are. The trials of miles, miles of trials, TOMMOT. Enjoy!

This past weekend officially ushered in a new era of American Distance Running and it sure is an exciting one! New USA records, new high school records, and new collegiate records all went down this past weekend. The limits that were self-imposed in the minds of US distance runners have seemingly been lifted.  Also, former guests, Futsum Zeinasellassie and Natosha Rogers, crush their respective races. With Futsum getting 2nd place at the USA half-marathon champs, losing by less than a second, and Natosha winning her race and leading eight women under the World Standard of 15:10 in the 5k at the Sound Running Track Meet.

We then talk about the UFC fight card this past weekend, what we saw, what we learned, and how it made us feel (spoiler alert, Lorin cries). This led us to ask the question "why do we humans act so crazy about sports?" What is it about humans cooperating to usually get a dehydrated cow hide across a line or into a hoop that makes humans do seemingly abnormal, insane things such as cheer loudly, yell, cry, riot, get into fights, and even burn down buildings? This is a prelude to what will hopefully become a case study and panel discussion with some future guests that have expertise on these matters.

We finish up with what we have been up to this past week - reading, running, and serving - and what we are planning on doing this upcoming week, including Xavier taking his track team to the State Championships in Phoenix, Arizona.

What is "failure"? Some would say it's not reaching your goals.  Some would describe it as a dark, terrible, almost sickening feeling. As you get older, the pain of past "failures" and the social stigma surrounding "failure" tends to paralyze you from taking action. So instead of pursuing and failing to obtain your goals, you choose to not even pursue. The fear of the pain of failure overpowers everything. What if....... What if you changed that conversation with yourself? What if instead of telling yourself "what if I fail?" "what if they reject me?" "what if they say no?" "what if no one cares?" "what if I lose?"...... What if you said "what if I SUCCEED?" "what if I am that bada$$ that everyone looks up to?" "what if they say yes?" "what will happen if I WIN?"...... One of the main ingredients that separates those who are successful vs those who are not, is the ability to grow from failure. To view failure as a teacher - a teacher of what you are capable of enduring. A teacher of what you are capable of RISING FROM to even greater heights than ever before. A teacher that whispers to you, YOU CAN DO MORE. YOU MUST DO MORE...... The confidence that no matter what life throws at you, you're going to fight back tooth and claw until you WIN..... It's the hero's journey and it exists inside each and every single one of us. If you have fallen, now is the time to rise. Embody your inner Dark Knight.

$1.7 trillion in student loan debt. A staggering 42% obesity rate. Cutting PE classes from schools. Not teaching our kids about accounting, economics, and finance, which is the entire game we play. Over 30 million Americans are food insecure. Depression rates are at 32.8%. And it's all just getting started as prices continue to go up and wages continue to stagnant. As TRILLIONS of our own money is wastefully spent and collected by the people in charge, rigging the game, rather than being used to address the real problems.

If we do nothing, we have no one to blame but ourselves. It doesn't have to be this way though. NOW is the time to start having these conversations and taking action so that not only our lives are better, but also the lives of the future generations. NOW is the time to change our aims away from greed, power, and popularity to LOVE of ourselves and everyone else. Take action now, or you won't have anything to take action for in the future.

This episode is Lorin Wilson's experience, from the heart. of doing 75Hard. Why he did it. How he did it. What he got from it. What he learned from it. A solo podcast that we hope to have a follow up episode to with Xavier asking Lorin about the program.

75Hard is a mental toughness program designed by 1st Phorm CEO and Billionaire, Andy Frisella.

Andy cares so much about his community and country that he tries to share the lessons that he and his friends use to create the lives that they have. He gives these lessons away for free through his podcast and his programs. The one skill that Andy says is most important for you to live the life of your dreams is "mental toughness." What is mental toughness? Mental toughness is the ability to win the WAR in your own mind that EVERYONE HAS. "You're not good enough." "You don't deserve this." "You don't have any talent." "Take it easy today." "You're tired, you have been working hard, it's ok to rest right now." "You have already done enough." "You don't need to do that. Sit here and watch Netflix." "Just go to sleep." "No one will know if you just skip it today." "No one will know if you compromised today." "Theres a pandemic going on you can chill, it's not your fault you suck, you're fat, you're poor." "The economy is tanking, it's not you're fault you're not as rich as you want to be." "You just don't have good genetics, it's not your fault you're out of shape." BULLSHIT.

Mental toughness is developing the ability to recognize these thoughts when they come up and telling them to shut the fuck up and doing what you KNOW in your heart needs to be done. Mental toughness is doing what you don't always want to do ESPECIALLY when you're tired and everything in your body is screaming and yelling for you to stop. Mental toughness is mastering the monotonous. Mental toughness is not letting external environments control your inner feelings or actions.

75Hard will give you everything you ever needed to live the life you ever wanted. An old saying goes "you can't explain the experience of color to a blind-person" and that applies here too. You can't explain the power of confidence, fortitude, grit, and mental toughness to someone who has never experienced it. You just have to do it for yourself.

We all have within us the capacity to change the world. We just have to believe that it's actually possible. In this solocast episode, Xavier takes a deep dive into how powerful our words can be in shaping the worldview and mindset of the people around us. He shares the importance of manifestation in achieving goals as well as giving tips on how to use positive reinforcement to help your teammates, co-workers, friends, and family members want to chase after their potential on their own terms. He finshes off with some real world examples of this to help you visualize how to do this in your own environment. Be the change you want to see in the world and understand how powerful your words truly are in terms of belief, not only in yourself, but in everyone around you.

In this first "micro-pod" Lorin discusses becoming self-aware of how much energy and time you are using to focus on what is out of your control. How much energy and time do you use thinking about and regurgitating what is on the news or trending on social media? Does this cause you anxiety and stress? How would your life be different if you learned to focus on what you could control? How much more fulfilling would it be? Take back your freedom by controlling what your conscious mind is focused on. In the second part, Lorin addresses teammates and cultures that try to bring people down that are trying to be better. The reason these people try to stop you from becoming better is that they lack courage and are fearful. Once you realize that, you can begin to cultivate a plan to address these people. Included is an exercise Lorin created called "define winning" that can help close the communication gap and hopefully get everyone aligned on the same page. Once someone defines "winning" themselves and then their actions don't reflect this, the conclusion is that they don't want to be a "winner" which means by default they want to be a "loser." Very few people will be able to handle the pain of this reality and this should help charge them up to start acting like a "winner."

We talk about the grit and determination that is exemplified in these performances as well as the realization that all of these achievements have one thing in common: Hard Work. We discuss and reflect over the last 1000 days of life and dig into the concept that anything worth achieving is going to take a tremendous amount of work, dedication, and TIME. We both get vulnerable about what's going on in our lives currently and how we're dealing with the stress that all this hard work can bring. We give some insight on what we do when things get tough and the value of feeding yourself fruitful content when life seems to be too hard to get through..... What could you do if you gave yourself 1,000 days? 10 years? 20 years? What could you accomplish if you went all in on yourself for that long?

There are two types of people in this world: Those who find excuses and those who find a way. Which type are you?

In this podcast we talk about the power of an internal locus of control and, just truly, how much control you have over your immediate situation. No matter what is happening in the world, the one thing that NO ONE can ever take from you is your mindset. That is the most powerful weapon in the entire universe. Cultivate your mindset through discipline and seeking out the uncomfortable. Through overcoming the often paralyzing effects of fear, you can, and you will, elevate yourself to unimaginable heights.

Don't accept average. Be someone in the arena striving for greatness. Throw away "if only" "could've" "would've" "should've" and replace it with "REMEMBER WHEN." Win the day. Days add up to weeks, which add up to months, which add up to years. Win enough years, and you will have won a lifetime.

In this episode we deconstruct the goal setting process down to its most primitive form: developing self-awareness. Emerging from self-awareness, we go through our own experiences of setting goals: how we have set goals/currently set goals, and how we have helped others set goals.

Topics: frameworks to develop self-awareness, goals as MAPs to go from who you are to who you want to be, how culture from the immediate environment to the universal scale affect your goal setting process, surrounding yourself with motivated individuals, yet also staying open-minded and engaging with others to get out of your echo chamber, viewing life as a series of seasons, SMART goal setting, and 5 Mountain Personal Development (amongst many other topics!). We then lay out our own personal goals for the world to hear and how we plan to go about achieving them. Happy New Year from the Full Throttle Podcast! Let's set some big goals and make 2022 the best year of our lives!

Adapt. Improvise. Overcome.

3 minutes 35 seconds to 40 minutes: Training this past week. Ran 91 miles in singles plus 5 hours of cycling, while working through the S-Corp tax extension deadline. How? By understanding that the little things are everything. How you eat, sleep, foam roll, stretch, hydrate, think, and slow down to appreciate/practice gratitude are the foundation. The bigger the foundation, the bigger the peak.

40 minutes to 46 minutes: “The Dawn Wall” movie take-aways. In January, 2015, American rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson captivated the world with their effort to climb The Dawn Wall, a seemingly impossible 3,000 foot rock face in Yosemite National Park, California.

For Tommy Caldwell, The Dawn Wall was much more than just a climb. It was the culmination of a lifetime defined by overcoming obstacles. At the age of 22, the climbing prodigy was taken hostage by rebels in Kyrgyzstan. Shortly after, he lost his index finger in an accident, but resolved to come back stronger. When his marriage fell apart, he escaped the pain by fixating on the extraordinary goal of free climbing The Dawn Wall.

Blurring the line between dedication and obsession, Caldwell and his partner Jorgeson spend six years meticulously plotting and practicing their route.

46 minutes to the end, 67 minutes: “Relentless” excerpts and analysis. Developing routines.Tuning out external noise and going internal to develop your instincts. Don’t be a caged lion. We were all born relentless, yet, were taught to relent.
