Why do high performers seem to struggle with their personal relationships? Our guest today is Jason VanRuler, a licensed therapist and author of "Get Past Your Past." Jason provides eye-opening insights into why high performers often struggle with personal relationships. He explains that while high performers excel in business by applying certain success strategies, these same strategies can fail in personal relationships. Jason emphasizes the importance of vulnerability, identifying safe people, isolation vs. self-isolation, and the need for intentional and consistent relationships (and grieving the ones that no longer fit).
We discuss the concept of "max awareness" in therapy, where people are more aware of their issues but often fail to take actionable steps to improve their relationships.

What do you do when you look in the mirror and gravity has stricken your once very youthful high and tight face? Not gonna lie - it’s a beeeyach. It can really mess with you. And it’s no secret that our society for centuries and centuries has put premium value on youth as a moral imperative to beauty. And wherever you may stand on plastic surgery, fillers, injections - it can also make a world of positive difference when done right and for the right reasons. So the question is - to cut or not to cut - and today, I got one of my favorite people ever on the podcast to unpack some of the beauty trends, understanding when it makes sense for surgery or less invasive options, what are some of the less effective trends that have really good marketing, how to find the right surgeon for you, and social commentary. Today’s guest is Dr. Louis DeJoseph, TRIPLE board certified award-winning renowned facial plastic surgeon based out of Atlanta. He is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, voted Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon by Best Self, Best Facial Plastic Surgeon by Jezebel Magazine and featured in the Atlantan Magazine.

What are the skincare and beauty trends that are useful and effective and which ones are marketing gimmicks feeding into a $104B industry? Silicone patches, infrared masks, simplified skincare, what do you actually need? What does it look like to move away from anti-aging rhetoric and move towards pro-aging. The beauty industry has truly shaped our culture, our beauty standards, and in a lot of ways, has shaped our own self-worth.

Where are my fellow control freaks?
Such an interesting and way more helpful perspective to rethink and redefine perfectionism. You know when you read a book and it’s so groundbreaking and helpful, you can’t help but tell all your friends, post about it? Well, I was the recipient of essentially being attacked on all sides that I needed to read this award-winning book, The Perfectionists’ Guide to Losing Control by Katherine Morgan Schafler. Katherine is a seasoned psychotherapist and former in-house therapist for Google, with a BA in psychology from Berkeley and 2 masters from Columbia University and I’ve got her incredibly refreshing and game-changing approach broken down today. We talk about self-punishment vs. discipline. We talk about adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism and why restoration and resting feels like failure to perfectionists - and my favorite, control vs. power. I really am super excited for you to hear it and can't wait to hear what type of perfectionist are you!

Episode SummaryAllison Hare interview Chris Schembra. Episode NotesIf you could give credit and thanks to one person in your life, that you DON’T give enough credit or thanks to, who would that be? My guest today is Chris Schembra. He is part best-selling author, part-dinner host, and part-Chief Question Officer. USA Today named him the Gratitude Guru. His book Gratitude and Pasta: The Secret Sauce for Human Connection was ranked #2 book of 2020 by Forbes. Recently, he was honored alongside Michael Phelps, Chris Evans, Kid Cudi and several others as “6 Successful Men Smashing the Mental Health Stigma” by Good Men Project. We hear a lot about gratitude being the key to happiness – and there’s truth in that – but he flips it in a way I have NEVER heard before. And it’s changing lives. Bringing REAL connections. Inviting radical empathy. And even doing it not only in a personal setting, but also in corporate settings. And could you imagine the power of that in a time of absolute chaos – in an election year – as the world has gone virtual – amidst a global pandemic – how can we connect and not feel so alone? I had done a TED Talk, had done a TEDx Talk, had a book out and a second on the way… College just wasn’t for me!” “I was driven by escaping the vicious cycle of normalcy” “My mission these days is to establish as many “Meetings Of The Minds” as possible, where you get a diverse group of people to solve a problem and scale a solution’ “Individuals today have more power than governments, corporations and what the uber wealthy had 25 or 50 years ago” “Yes, it was easier for me foundationally. I can’t control that. I can only attempt to be an advocate for those who are disenfranchised and attempt to even the playing field and use my privilege” “We still have more work to do. The way to approach this conversation is to see how you can do better if you haven’t been amazing in the past” “If that’s a hard road to go down to then maybe don’t think of a “cold email”, for example, as a confidence challenge maybe think about it as a risk-reward ratio” “We are seeing a shift away from higher education being the only path” Guest Links:

With the 2020 election guaranteeing a full bonanza of chaos, will Thanksgiving dinners be safe again? Left-leaning host, Allison Hare interviews Republican Esther Joy King running for US Congress representing the 17th district of Illinois. Esther served in the US military, was an aid in Afghanistan, an entrepreneur, and an attorney – and has a fascinating background. The conversation took an unexpected turn and we worked through a difference of perception in real-time. It was both exhausting and liberating – and hopeful. Keypoints:
Challenge your own way of thinking and see you can perceive something from an opposite point of view, just to double check what you believe and just to soul search about it.
Elections should be about who’s going to give better representation, and not political parties.
Politics is often reflective of our worldview
Quotes: –“Politics are contentious, but everybody wants better” – Esther Joy King -“I’m trying to be responsible myself, but it’s a daily accountability.” – Esther Joy King -“ I don’t think it is a good idea to not talk about politics or religion or money. And I think that because we have not talked about it is why we are having so many problems” – Allison Hare Get in Touch with Esther Joy King: Website | Twitter | Instagram Get in Touch with Allison: Culture Changers | Allison Hare Website: https://allisonhare.com Instagram: https://instagram.com/allison__hare Start, Launch, and Grow Your Podcast With Me: https://allisonhare.com/podcasts Join the Sticky Notes Blog: https://allisonhare.com/blog Download Your Free Equipment and Software Guide: https://allisonhare.com/equipment Text me: 470-242-6311

“I think purpose is something that evolves over time and it also itirates”

“When we're not struggling is almost when we've gotten a little dead or we're too far in our comfort zone”
“Moving bands go both ways… You can try things, maybe they will work out or maybe they won't, but just try”

If you could give credit and thanks to one person in your life, that you DON’T give enough credit or thanks to, who would that be? Starting a podcast can feel overwhelming. You’re probably thinking is the market oversaturated? Will my podcast even make a dent? There’s probably a little imposter syndrome creeping in thinking, who am I to throw my hat in the ring? There are about 1.2 Million podcasts out there but only about 50% of them are considered active. Why is that? I actually feel like these statistics are encouraging for a few reasons. A lot of people throw podcasts out there without giving a few key areas some much needed consideration. I promise you - these mistakes are why there are so many shows in the podcast graveyard. But not yours! This is your passion. Your voice. Your message. Your stories. You are going to make it great! Please listen, comment, share. So much goes into a GREAT interview. And it truly is an art and interviewing is an important life skill that can cross into every area of your life. This requires sharpening your own emotional intelligence in the process. There’s no such thing as a perfect interviewer. The best news is that you are always continuously evolving and improving. As someone who interviews people not only for this podcast but also unsuspecting strangers by nature, I’ve noticed some cardinal mistakes people make that instantly turn the listener off when I listen to other podcasts - and also some small tweaks that can make your podcast interview so irresistible that your listeners will be posting it, sharing it, and sending it to all their friends. OK Cafe is a 50-year-old Atlanta institution, along with Blue Ridge Grill and Bone’s Steakhouse. During a peaceful Black Lives Matter march that was going past OK Cafe, a few weeks ago in response, there was a huge banner that stated, ‘Lives That Matter Are Made With Positive Purpose. The backlash to the owners putting up this cryptic banner was immediate. Episode Highlights:
Allison Hare introduces Yendelela Neely Holston.

What has the response been like to her letter?
What is her call to action for people that are going to continue to stand up for black lives?

3 Key Points
Anti-racism is the key to confront racism.
People don’t have to be white to be racist. Perpetuating racism makes someone racist.
Yendelela Neely Holston started a pipeline program for law school readiness for historically underrepresented individuals on two coasts with two of her firm's largest clients.
Tweetable Quotes:
“Not doing something that is overtly racist is not enough, because we all function and live within a racist society. So, doing nothing, you are perpetuating racism. Period. Unless you are actively working against it, you are perpetuating it.” –Yendelela Neely Holston
“I think that’s how we continue to not address things over history is that we reframe them in ways that are convenient and minimize what the real issue is.” –Yendelela Neely Holston
(Systemic racism) “It is not a lack of intellectual horsepower. It is not a lack of ability. It is because you're just spending so much time how this works. You don’t have a cousin or an uncle or family friend to call and help navigate through.” –Yendelela Neely Holston

Have you been thinking if you should start a podcast but juuuuuust need a little confirmation that this is the right move? I've got you covered. Thanks to technology, everyone has a voice and a platform. We are all our own media companies these days. The question is - which voices do you personally amplify? It’s an important question and one that requires agency and intention on your part.
And what about your voice? Sometimes the best advice you can get is to get out of your own head - and think of WHO IT'S FOR!
So this episode will have 3 very important parts:
I’m going to tell you the story about interviewing the great Seth Godin which I did last week. It was something else!
I have a lot of people asking me about podcasting. And as you may know, I run an interactive step-by-step podcast course called Press Play Podcasts that begins on July 6th. So if podcasting is something that you’ve considered - or are even thinking about how to make an impact with your own life but not sure why, you will really enjoy it.
I invited Press Play Podcasts alumni Megan Armstrong, the host of the wildly popular podcast 6 Feet Above to talk about her podcasting experience. What’s so interesting about her is that she already had 1 season of her podcast published and THEN chose to take my Press Play Podcasts course so we will dig into that.

3 Key Points
Accept yourself for who you are instead of seeking external validation from others.
We have to have real face-to-face conversations about racial inequality.
Unfortunately, we are often treated based on how people perceive us based on their personal bias towards how we look.
Tweetable Quotes:
“Everybody really has to do their own work in this whole process. But, we need to be able to know that advocacy and social justice is a spiritual practice and we need to work on that. The time has come.” –Aissa Hillebrand

How often do you consider metaphysical explanations when the world seems upside down?
In this time, when the world seems to be spinning off its axis and all the life maps have mysteriously been thrown out, I thought it was a good time to revisit this conversation with Kelley Knight, the magnetic CEO and founder of wildly successful Modern Mystic Shop.
Host Allison Hare talks to Kelley Knight, CEO, Founder, and Owner of Modern Mystic Shop, a female-founded resource for intentionally made, small-batch metaphysical goods and services in Atlanta, Georgia. Kelley Knight talks about what brought her into embracing her spiritual journey, integrating her spiritual life and her business life, ways to elevate as a society, and what it means that we are now entering into the Aquarian Age.
Episode Highlights:
Allison Hare introduces Kelley Knight.
Kelley Knight explains who she is and how she got where she is today.
How did her marketing ideas come to her?
How did you start Modern Mystic?
Kelley talks about entering the Aquarian Age.
Allison Hare talks about a highly successful reading she had with Kelley Knight.
Kelley discusses normalizing spirituality and balancing that with business.
Who does her dad represent in her psyche?
What does it take to be open to a spiritual transition?
Many millennials are going to spiritual readers as opposed to therapists.
How has her business changed and grown?
How does she remain generous with her time and productive at the same time?
What does the world need right now?
What are her current goals?
Kelley Knight talks about how her mind works with making connections and her book “Spells for the Modern Mystic”: A Ritual Guidebook and Spell-Casting Kit.
What is next for her and how can people reach out for her services?
Kelley discusses how the impact and expansion have been for Modern Mystic.
3 Key Points
First healing and then honing are the steps that led Kelley Knight to strengthening her intuition abilities.
Normalizing spirituality takes discernment, self-regulation, and analyzing the ways we have associated spirituality with religion in the past.
Kelley’s big spiritual awakening happened in 2012 when she began seeing dead people and the Aquarian Age began.
Tweetable Quotes:
“I believe that the best way that I can be impactful is to fill a space, to scan the horizon and see where there is a need that my gifts and talents align with and fill that need, as opposed to creating something and making people come to you.” –Kelley Knight
“I think that’s why I’m a good tarot reader is because I can see all of the cards and all of the pieces laid out and then it clicks in very quickly how they all work together, and that is how my mind is working with marketing too.” –Kelley Knight
“Everyone has their own Spidey sense or super sense, right? So, the more that we normalize it and we make it not special, the more that people are going to use it, and the more that we can use it to work together and be together.” –Kelley Knight

With the series of brutal and senseless murders and police brutality against black men and women across America, I am struggling to find the right words.
There are protestors, riots, violence, and gaslighting from political leaders that has left the nation enraged frustrated, in despair, and ready for change.
I stand in protest with my black brothers and sisters. I honor the names of some of the black men and women that have been slain by police violence and victims of hate crimes.
The broken system of racial injustice needs to be dismantled piece by piece by piece.
I'm offering my podcast as a platform for anyone who needs their story to be heard.

Host Allison Hare talks to Jenny Levison, owner of beloved Atlanta restaurant Souper Jenny and the founder of the foundation The Zadie Project. They discuss serving your community, following your purpose and passion, adventures in entrepreneurship, healthy cooking, and more.
Episode Highlights:
Jenny grew up in Atlanta, but moved to LA with her mother when her parents got divorced, and that led her into acting.
As an actor, she always also worked in restaurants, making her way through management and eventually ending up in the kitchen for a friend’s restaurant.
Jenny and her husband at the time traveled around the world for 18 months, visiting 24 countries, and during that time she collected recipes from anyone she met, later realizing they were almost entirely soups.
Jenny founded The Zadie Project 3 years ago as a 501(c)3 after coming together with her whole Souper Jenny team and realizing she wanted to expand the ways she was serving the community in Atlanta.
Through The Zadie Project, they donate food from Souper Jenny to Title I schools, homeless shelters, and other at risk populations.
Jenny is dedicated to being intentional every day, even if that means being intentional about relaxing and watching Netflix.
The Zadie Project also holds a free drive-through grocery for those in need, especially with the effects of COVID-19.
Souper Jenny is lucky to have already been a take-out only restaurant so they have not had to close, but it’s been hard on the employees.
Jenny wants to open another location and is bidding to get into the airport.
Souper Jenny sells 3 cookbooks that you can buy on their website, or get other recipes off Jenny’s blog.
3 Key Points
If you’re driven to do something and you feel it is your purpose, then you don’t need experience to get started.
COVID-19 has brought out so much kindness in people that perhaps we can make this a permanent change for the better.
Franchising would mean not having your hands on every aspect of the business anymore, so deliberate, intentional growth is crucial.
Tweetable Quotes:
"I look at the end like it’s already happened. All the things that you need to think about—how am I going to pay for it, how am I going to get time off work—all those things come later for me. I see that picture of what I want and everything else is secondary.” –Jenny Levison
“My purpose is just to know that I didn’t waste my time here. That I created something that people enjoy, it’s not gonna change the world, maybe, but I truly love what I do.” –Jenny Levison

Host Allison Hare talks to Father Dennis Dorner, Jr., her first repeat guest, about how he is using his time in self-isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, how he views his role as a priest when he and his congregation can’t go to church, how science and faith are not incompatible, and more. You can also WATCH this episode on YouTube.
Episode Highlights:
During the pandemic, Father Dennis has been doing daily prayers online at 11am and 3pm as well as live online mass on Sundays in order to provide a sense of ritual and comfort during this time of anxiety.
He also teaches contextual education, or ministry, at Emory University, and he has 10 interns with whom he teaches and discusses how to minister to the most needy populations like the homeless.
Even the most secular person relies on and thrives on routine and ritual.
For Father Dennis, prayer isn’t about having God whisper in his ear, it’s about aligning himself with those who are hurting.
This pandemic is not an apocalyptic act of God, it’s the result of the actions of man.
It takes 30 days to build a habit, so Father Dennis hopes we’ll be mindful of what we’re doing during this time to grow and bring about positive change.
He is concerned about what he’s observed in his community and some other communities with people feeling they cannot have their relationship with God unless they’re physically present in a church.
He’s become more aware of people’s lack of understanding about science in this time, like people seeking antibiotics for a virus, when those are for bacterial infections, not viruses.
Father Dennis is hoping this can be a time to learn rather than needing to experience.
He sees people taking more of an interest in the divine right now, whether or not it leads them to formalized religion.
This crisis hasn’t made Father Dennis question his choices, specifically, but it has exacerbated his need to be at peace with being isolated.
He has set intentions for his days, like choosing not to watch anything on TV after 8pm.
His main intention is to connect with people.
Is peace possible without grace? It’s an involuntary grace that comes when you search for peace.

The natives are getting restless.
My kids are starting to break down. They are fighting more. There are more tears, screaming, and more easily agitated.
Can you blame them?
I've got a seven year old boy and a four year old girl. After last night where my son was extra clingy and sad to me, he shared that he really missed being outside and seeing his friends.
He's grieving, too!
So we decided to talk about it on the podcast.
This episode is a departure from my usual fare but I think it is a real snapshot of how we all feel inside and if you have kids, they might get a kick out of it.

One of the most heartwarming and incredible sunny parts about living through a pandemic - is to really think about other people’s lives with compassion. These are countless people known as essential workers risking their lives everyday to keep our world safe, healthy, fed, connected, and keep the world moving. I am so grateful to those people. And by the same token, we are thinking about the needs of others. We are considering how other people live and how can we safely help our neighbors, community, and loved ones. One of the things I was very struck by was from my work colleague, Carden Wyckoff. She has recently launched a podcast called Freewheelin’ with Cardenofmilk. She is a wheelchair warrior, a bad ass at life, a HUGE advocate for people with physical and unseen disabilities and accessibility worldwide - and is probably one of the most optimistic and interesting people I know. We got to sit down before we were all in quarantine and talk about what life is really like from a wheelchair and some fascinating stories I would have never imagined - and we talked about what accessibility means. And when I listened to one of her episodes, she talked about how she would be impacted if we do go into full-blown lockdown. It was mind-blowing and I have been so excited to share this episode with you. Since we are in such an unprecedented and isolated state, we are in a position where we are FORCED to really examine what happens next. Will your employment status be stable? How will you make money? Is this a wake-up call to do what you’ve always dreamed of doing? Or is it a wake-up call that maybe you are forced to stop doing what you love and pivot?
Some of you may be in a position where you’ve lost your job or have been furloughed - and maybe you haven’t put a resume together in a long time. With unemployment claims well over 10 Million filed just in the past couple of weeks, we’ve really got to position ourselves in a way to bounce back and protect our income - and do it by leveraging where our own genius lives.
These questions have been swirling around my brain and why I tracked down the legendary Karen Yankovich to help us navigate these unchartered waters. Karen Yankovich is a sought-after LinkedIn marketing consultant, keynote speaker, and marketing strategist. She also hosts the popular podcast Good Girls Get Rich.
What I didn’t realize is how powerful a platform LinkedIn is. You may not know this but Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook’s algorithms are so oversaturated that it’s hard to make a dent. But LinkedIn’s algorithm is still organic. So the way you connect with people on LinkedIn is so much more effective and powerful than the other mediums - and Karen’s going to break down how and also some important things to know to position yourself. And also, she has a very special offer for my listeners to do a free review of your LinkedIn Profile!! Make sure you tell her you are referred by Allison Hare and Bright This Way Podcast.

Do you ever dream of the day that you and your family never get tempted by junk food, you LOVE eating your veggies, and you and your kids are in optimal health because of your smart choices? Yeah, I dream about it every. Damn. meal. While pushing down that irritating feeling that I am failing miserably.
I’ve been on my own food journey since I had my son seven years ago. In an attempt to get rid of any baby weight and sinking into an obsessive and dangerously controlling hole a few years back, it’s been really important to me to keep my own health and nutrition in check - without passing my own emotional issues with food onto my kids.
So if any of this sounds familiar - and especially these days now when you are stuck at home - probably stress snacking more - and trying to serve healthy-ish food to your families but falling short due to limited resources, this is the episode for you.
Today’s guest is Sloane Simon who is part of the federation of nutritional therapy practitioners. Through her own journey through her roller-coaster relationship to food, she has created an entire program and focus on helping families eat healthier together - while maintaining an evolving and positive relationship to food.
I had so many takeaways and thought-provoking tips on ways to keep my kids and our family healthy, focused, and sharp through our relationships to food.

Not that this is news but it’s a really crazy time out there. Week by week. Day by day. Hour by hour. New information. New reality. New stress. And guess what - like it or not, culture is changing. So how do you cope? One thing is for certain about the coronavirus. There will be a beginning, a middle, and an end. And nobody can predict when the end will be and what the collateral damage will be. But there are a few things we can control and at least contribute to a solution. But we need to take care of a few things ourselves. Kind of like putting the oxygen mask on yourself first before assisting others. Last Saturday and at times over the past week, I felt my emotions jerked around by new information from the news, social media, friends, whatever. I know I’m not alone here. But helpless isn’t my favorite feeling. And I realized that there are 2 surefire ways to get me out of any funk, rut, or when I start getting judgey on others. 1 is to be creative. Create anything. Podcast, write in a journal, even a social media post. And as a result, I finally launched my blog that I’ve been sitting on for months. I was going to do it weekly on release of my Tuesday podcast episodes but right now, I’m doing it daily because I feel like people really need something steady and strong as we weather the storm together. If you’d like to receive my newsletter, and I sure hope you do, please go to allisonhare.com and sign-up right on the home page. Also, while you’re at it, subscribe to this podcast. The other funk-buster is moving my body. The endorphin rush, the confidence comes roaring back, and all of these creative ideas come flooding through. And my #1 magic wand when I need to get my head right. I need to rewind for a moment. In the very beginning of this year, I stumbled on this dance class I had never heard of. And as you’ll hear from this conversation, halfway through the first time I tried this dance class, something really profound happened. Like life-altering. It wasn’t just any dance class. REB3L Groove is a culture-changer. So have you ever watched So You Think You Can Dance or Dancing with the Stars - and you think to yourself, I bet if I was locked in a room for hours and weeks with these dance pros, I could do that? Um, yes. Of course you have. We all have. The concept of this particular dance class is the lights are low so no one feels intimidated. The music is loud so you can get lost in it. There’s no instruction other than physical cues. You just follow along as best you can. And what happened to me about halfway through this class is the most intense release I had ever felt - and then this pure joy! I didn’t know what hit me - but I knew I had to tell everyone on earth about it. And keep coming back. After that first class, I went deep into the rabbit hole of the origins of Reb3l Fitness and read the stories, turned out I was right. It’s so much more than a dance class. There’s a HUGE community called Reb3l Nation that spans throughout the country and not only do they offer in-person classes nationwide, but they also have on-demand fitness, instructor training, and apparel. If you’re reading this on my website, scroll down below and check out the transformation pictures. It’s insane! Nothing felt more important than to address the concerns around coronavirus this week.
I have a cousin named Jenny Laghi. She lives in northern Italy in the hills of Torino. Since we are a few weeks behind the spread of coronavirus, I was grateful she was willing to share her experience. She’s home with a 13 year old daughter and explains what life is like under lockdown. She also has a pretty amazing perspective and guidance on how to make the best out of such an unusual situation.

This is episode #47 with Amie Dean, the Behavior Queen. We are talking about bad behavior and kids. You know the kind. The ones that are super disruptive. Maybe they talk back. They might be defiant or hurt other people or themselves. There’s a whole myriad of ways that kids can act out and with pressure mounting in the classrooms and at home, it’s hard to maintain control and order and still act in the everyone’s best interest. Okay, so here’s the deal. Think of all the people in your life that are teachers, principals, administrators, parents who struggle with challenging behavior in their kids, child therapists, or anyone who works with kids. I want you to think of at least 3 people and share this episode with them. It will change everything. Amie Dean is a nationally recognized behavior interventionist, educational consultant, and author of 2 children’s books. She helps teachers implement positive and practical strategies to save our most challenging students - and save themselves. As a parent, I learned so many techniques to help instill esteem and confidence in my children. If you are a parent or work with kids, you will hang on to every word she says. I also have the transcripts available in the show notes - it’s that good!

Ever feel that gnawing feeling that - maybe you’re in the wrong job? Maybe the wrong career? Or maybe the right career, but you feel like there’s so much more for you? Well, a worldwide 2017 Gallup poll states that 85% of people are unhappy with their work. 85%!!!! Whoooo. My guest today is Mary Margaret Skelly. She spent 10 years as an executive recruiter placing C-level executives for Google, Silicon Valley, and worked on Wall Street. And what she quickly realized is that there was something sorely missing from every one of these candidates. And that was fulfillment.
Mary Margaret pivoted her own career and now is a career advisor specializing in integrating your purpose and spirituality with your work. We talked about bridging the gap and she had great actionable advice to integrate intuition with logic and embrace a path that’s far more fulfilling and rewarding. I know I have a lot of friends that have been waiting for me to publish this episode.

Did you know that 40 million adults suffer from anxiety and depression in the US? That’s almost 20% of the population! It’s a lot and it’s on the rise!
My guest today is Megan Armstrong. If you live in Atlanta, you probably know her name well. She’s been a staple on the fitness and wellness scene for years and people LOVE her. Just a few short months ago, she came forward and started a podcast called 6 Feet Above and revealed that she has spent 16 years of her life wishing she was 6 feet below. Her first season came out, she shared her own struggles with bipolar disorder, bulimia, and depression - and her podcast spread like wildfire. She has touched on a nerve and has shared people’s stories of struggle and success. So today is a story of bouncing back. It’s not always easy. It’s not always pretty. But it’s always real. And I loved her message of compassion, understanding, and how important it is to feel seen and heard.

Who is this podcast for anyway? When considering starting a show, it's important that you get really clear on who your audience is.
In my case, it's one person. The person who is stuck.
I felt something in my gut that said I needed to do a solocast this week. And I wasn't expecting this - but I ended up crying through half of it. I thought about editing parts of it out but I decided to leave it raw and real.
The upside is that there are some powerful and simple takeaways that can literally alter the rest of your life.
I'd really love to hear from you on this one. Here's how you can stay connected:

Parenting In a Tech World Facebook Group
Technology and Kids is a whole new ballgame:
Social media and phones have pioneered new terrain for parenting of which there is no roadmap.
And as a parent, it keeps me up at night. I’m so afraid I’m going to screw this up. Do my kids have too much screen time? Is YouTube safe? When they get older, my kids are going to beg for a phone. Should I give them one? Their friends all have Tik Tok and Instagram accounts. Should I let my kids have one? They are exposed to Violence. Suicidal tendencies. Sexual predators. School shootings. Porn. Bullying and so much more. As if teenage years weren’t hard enough.
The big question is: Is my kid going to be okay??? Am i doing enough to protect them?
Today’s episode deals with a heavy topic but also a hopeful one. I am talking to Titania Jordan, CMO and Chief Parent Officer of Bark Technologies. Bark is a parental control monitoring app to help keep your kids safe. Bark has thwarted multiple school shootings, saved kids from suicide attempts, reported sexual predators, all using AI, algorithms, and provided guidance and alerts for parents.
Bottom line: this could be one of the most important episodes I have ever done. I hope you listen, download the app and use discount code LITTLELEFT and share this episode far and wide. I’m not going to mince words here: It could save your kid’s life.Any feedback or stories to share with me, please text me at 470.242.6311. I will repeat, this information could save your kids’ life.

I got to see Cate Stillman present at a podcast conference recently, and I was lit up with ideas. What struck me is how profound her take was on building a community of people that will push you to your greater good and be in flow for a better earth. Cate has somehow managed to marry her background in international environmental politics and policy and ayurvedic teachings. I knew I had to have her on this show and share her culture-changing ideas with you. Have you ever dreamed of living in an actual utopia? Sound too good to be true? Turns out it’s closer than you think! Serenbe is the world renowned pioneering self sustaining community about 40 minutes south of Atlanta. Recognized by Time Magazine, The New York Times, Oprah and more, Serenbe boasts edible trees, a professional farm, a focus on art, education, and a lifestyle steeped in wellness. Today, I got to speak to the sought after CEO and founder Steve Nygren. One thing that stood out is the amount of a-ha moments of what we can do in our own homes that can instantly improve our health, mental wellness, prevent cancer, and promote happiness. For instance, in the Serenbe community, there are about 100 kids that live there and not one of them has asthma. You’ve got to hear this interview! Steve is clearly a person who is committed to the purpose of marrying old fashioned values and community without sacrificing modern back lolcity life. And inspiring other people to elevate the importance of nature in our own communities. And it got me thinking about the people that I love that struggle with their health, struggle with depression, struggle with a lack of motivation - and it made me wonder if all of it is connected to our environment. I mean what if we used ourselves as Guinea pigs and made some simple changes - or even big changes - and it improved our overall conditions? What if it improved the quality of life for aging parents? What if it reversed medical conditions? What if it could help the earth? My guest today is Rhoberta Shaler, PhD. She is known as The Relationship Help Doctor and is a relationship consultant and educator, a speaker and author. The reason why I was interested in having her is because I thought it was important to understand how you raise great kids when you live in an unstable, tumultuous, or broken home. You always hear about therapists for kids who might be troubled or for couples. But not in the context of raising kids when times are tough! My suspicion is that there are so many people struggling with this behind the scenes- there is a sliding scale of discontent, right? When i posted that I was interviewing Dr. Rhoberta, I had so many people reach out and say they were struggling with this - and eager to hear the episode. Here’s the deal: People suffer in silence. My hope is that through this conversation, you will realize that you a- not alone and b- Dr. Shaler gives some really practical and sage advice on all fronts here. Please make sure you share this episode. It’s so important to have tools, understanding, and know there is a way to a better place. Dr. Rhoberta Shaler Save Your Sanity Podcast Instagram

Where do you get your news? Is it TV, radio, podcasts, social media, your phone, the newspaper, online, family arguments during dinner? With the political climate’s decibel turned up to the highest possible setting, I don’t know about you, but I’ve got news fatigue. I would love to stay informed but I am freaking exhausted by the emotional charge associated with the mainstream media - and beyond that, it’s hard to know what sources to trust. In walks Erica Mandy of the NewsWorthy Podcast. My guest on Little Left of Center is an award-winning broadcast news journalist and former TV news reporter that was recently named 1 of 50 women changing the world and media in entertainment - and here’s why. She started a daily news podcast called the Newsworthy that is labeled fast, fair, fun, and on the go. Each episode is less than 10 minutes and Erica actually gives you truly balanced information ranging from politics, technology, and entertainment - all in a quick on-the-go format that keeps you up to date in a fun and consumable way. Ever since I learned about the Newsworthy, I now listen every day - and I’ll tell you, I’ve actually incorporated something I’ve learned in her show just about every day in normal conversation. In our chat we talked about everything from how she verifies and corroborates her sources, if devouring and processing the news all day/every day for the show depresses her, and she answered my burning question which was “Could ½ of the population be wrong about their beliefs/politics?” The NewsWorthy Insta | Twitter | Facebook | Podcast Hey, did you know that Little Left of Center is also broadcasting on DecaturFM and Salesforce Radio? if you’ve been listening to this podcast for a while, you’ll probably realized I am obsessed with how leaders move a community...and in particular, political figures. Today’s guest is Ted Terry, mayor of Clarkston Ga and he is running for US Senate representing Georgia. If you recognize the name, yep, he’s the guy who was on Queer Eye and has made bold and progressive changes in his city of Clarkston and is bringing his unapologetic vision for a greater future to his candidacy. Personally, I think whether you care about politics or not, if anything about society pisses you off, you really do have the power to change it - and local politics is where your voice carries the most weight. I was so grateful to have Mayor Ted on my show to help explain more about how the process works, his approach to change, and I thought his guidance on how WE can make the most impact was spot on. I did IVF to get my 4 year old daughter, Juliana and the truth is, when there’s medical intervention when trying to conceive, there is no straight line to baby. Nobody goes on Facebook and says “hey, I can’t get knocked up. Anybody know anyone?” There’s a lot of secrecy, shame, and really, isolation when you’re going through it. Today’s guest is Cindy Robinson, founder of The Kid Factory and host of the Go Get Mom Podcast. As a mother, Cindy was really troubled by the rates of suicide in teenagers being so high but committed herself to make a positive impact for children. The leading cause of death for children ages 9-19 is suicide. This is unprecedented and shocking. Anxiety and depression diagnoses are also rapidly rising for both boys (10% increase from 2009) and girls (70% increase). The Kid Factory is on a journey to find solutions to this epidemic, and provide resources to as many parents as possible. I immediately related to her on so many levels and she had SO much useful information that I had never thought of before. I think her stories and information are really going to resonate with you, too. Kelley Knight, the CEO, Owner, and founder of Modern Mystic Shop is my guest for today's episode. Her shop is located in the prestigious hot spot of the southeast, Ponce City Market in Atlanta, GA. Modern Mystic is a wildly successful metaphysical shop (yes, you read that right) and experience designed to integrate your spiritual self with your practical every day life. As someone who frequently compartmentalizes my own spiritual beliefs and my business and everyday life, I was so glad to have a better understanding of how to merge it into one powerful source! Just to bring home how powerful and insightful she is, I went to Kelley a couple of years ago for a tarot reading, asking for guidance on my professional career. The cards immediately pivoted to my then-obsession with food and my body. At the time, I was skating on the brink of an all-consuming obsession and borderline body dysmorphia. Through ONE 45 minute tarot reading, she somehow identified it, asked me one poignant question - and within two weeks, had freed me from the grips I was in to help reverse the path. She and her community of educated and enlightened team members have become an affordable and practical form of therapy and wisdom for the thousands of customers that pass through their doors (or visit their site).
