A breathing anchor for your wandering mind. A practice where you root your awareness into the present moment, like an anchor that roots a ship to one place. The breath is an anchor to the present moment. In the sitting meditation practice the idea is not to stop thoughts, resist or get rid of emotions, feelings and sensations, or to reach some metaphysical state. In fact, thoughts are not the enemy and instead of trying to fight or resist them, the aim is to notice and observe them.

By practicing awareness — not identifying with what we think, what we feel, what we believe, or what we know — we get to create a spaciousness of mind that sets us free from the impact of our thoughts and feelings; it allows us to be more at ease with the moment-to-moment unfolding of life itself. When we use that awareness in reverence of others we allow ourselves to be separate from our thoughts and emotions towards others.

On this episode of the Meditate, Motivate, & Movement podcast we talk about striving and non-striving. The concept comes from the mindfulness-based stress reduction course (MBSR). A program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. The idea of Non-striving is trying less and being more. Non-striving doesn’t make sense if you’re immersed in a hyper-competitive, goal-obsessed culture like most of us are. But according to Kabat-Zinn...

"[Meditation] has no goal other than for you to be yourself. The irony is that you already are. This sounds paradoxical and a little crazy. Yet this paradox and craziness may be pointing you toward a new way of seeing yourself, one in which you are trying less and being more."
