Why did Henry VIII have two wives executed? We can learn a lot about the circumstances which led to the executions of Anne Boleyn and, 6 years later, her cousin Catherine Howard, by comparing and contrasting the two. Gareth Russell explores the events surrounding the downfall of each of the ill-fated Queens of Henry VIII in this new perspective on a familiar story and reveals a surprising fact...that Henry wrote a play about Anne Boleyn's "sexual misdemeanors" before her trial!

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Heather Darsie, author of a breakthrough biography of Henry VIII’s 4th wife, ‘Anna, Duchess of Cleves: The King’s ‘Beloved Sister’’. Heather has been able to look at Anna’s story, and that of her failed marriage to Henry VIII in a different, and all the more revealing context, explaining in a much more convincing way the reasons behind the failed marriage. The Queen's Christmas message has become a staple in the Christmas Day schedule. It began via a "wireless" address to the Empire by a nervous George V, in 1932. 25 years later, his granddaughter, Elizabeth II did the first televised Christmas Day message!

Lesley Smith has been the Curator of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire since 2000. Lesley is well known for her highly entertaining and informative costumed portrayals of a variety of historical characters. I’ve had the privilege of seeing Lesley’s portrayals of Mary, Queen of Scots at Tutbury Castle as part of my 2019 Executed Queens tour and in January 2020 I was at Peterborough Cathedral for her first performance of Katherine of Aragon. I think what Lesley does is completely unique. Her portrayal of women in history, dressed as they would have been, is not a reenactment, rather she brings these women to life through her monologues and it’s as if they are standing there talking to you. Lesley kindly agreed to join me and answer questions about the women she portrays and how she prepares her characters.

On the 2nd December 1697, St Paul's Cathedral was consecrated. This is the 5th St Paul's on this site and was the design of the famous architect, Sir Christopher Wren, who lived to see it finished. He is buried in the crypt in a simple tomb. Find out why his tomb was not grander.

The death of Princess Charlotte, daughter of the future George IV, in 1817 due to complications following the birth of a stillborn son, was a personal tragedy for the family but it didn't end there. The knock-on impact of Charlotte's death was far-reaching, the family's grief was echoed across the country but beyond that, there was now a succession crisis worse than any in English history. There was not one surviving, legitimate, grandchild of George III. The loss of Charlotte and her baby wiped out two generations of legitimate heirs. It was the 'race for a new heir' which led to the birth of Victoria, later Queen Victoria. Yet, many people have not heard of Charlotte. Type her name in search engines and they will return, understandably, countless pictures of the daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton. In the early hours of 2nd September 1666 fire broke out in a bakery on Pudding Lane in the City of London. 4 days later three-quarters of the city had been destroyed and tens of thousands of people were left homeless. Edward I of England steals the Stone of Scone....or does he? The Stone of Scone, on which Scottish kings had been crowned, was confiscated by Edward I of England and moved to Westminster Abbey. Edward even had a special coronation chair created to house the stone. Physically putting the Scottish coronation throne below that of the English. But did the savvy monks of Scone have the last laugh?

The 9-year-old Edward VI was crowned on 20th February 1547 at Westminster Abbey followed by a coronation banquet in the Great Hall of Westminster Palace, as was tradition. He even wrote about it in his diary!

To commemorate the death of Henry VIII on the 28th January 1547 I am sharing, for the first time as a podcast, my most popular video to date on YouTube, a live stream recorded about the burial place of Henry VIII.
Not only is his final resting place not what you may expect for this most narcissistic of kings, but why did he never get the tomb he had planned - I discuss why this may be.

EPISODE DESCRIPTION The truth about Henry VIII's final resting place can be a surprise to many. Even 500 years after his death, his larger than life character endures. So, - Where is the magnificent tomb? Well, nowhere. Or more accurately, parts of it are spread between uses elsewhere and displays in museums. Then there is the question, - Why is he buried with Jane Seymour? And finally, and the focus for this video, - Why was his final resting place left unmarked for so long and why his body never moved? I take you through the logic behind why Henry remained in what he assumed would be a temporary resting place and where the sarcophagus he had intended for himself, the one confiscated from Thomas Wolsey, is now. I also go into why he was buried with Jane Seymour, going beyond simply 'she was his favourite' hypothesis.

On the 12th January 1899, an incredible rescue took place off the Exmoor coast in the south-west of England. The bravery and sheer tenacity on display by ordinary folk led to an extraordinary rescue and saved the lives of all aboard the stricken ship, Forrest Hall.

In the early hours of 2nd September 1666 fire broke out in a bakery on Pudding Lane in the City of London. 4 days later three-quarters of the city had been destroyed and tens of thousands of people were left homeless.

👑 6th July 1189 - Richard the Lionheart becomes king of England following the death of his father Henry II. He spent about 6 months of his 10 year reign in England.
🤴 👸 6th July 1483 - Richard III and his wife Anne Neville have their joint coronation at Westminster Abbey.
⚰️ 👑 6th July 1553 - Edward VI dies and is succeeded by Queen Jane, otherwise known as Lady Jane Grey.
🔒 9th July 1553 - Jane Grey is proclaimed Queen. Nine days later Mary is proclaimed Queen and Jane is kept at the Tower of London, where she had gone in preparation for her coronation. She was executed the following February after the failed Wyatt Rebellion made Mary I acutely aware that Jane would be a potential figurehead for any Protestant Rebellion against her. Also, in 1996 the Spice Girls a UK Pop Group released their first single ‘Wannabe’ which became an instant hit.

On June 15th 1215 one of the most important ever produced in English history, came into being in a meadow near Windsor Castle. Effectively a peace treaty, the document which came to be known as 'Magna Carta' got the Royal Seal from King John. The document was doomed, or so it should have been, being annulled almost immediately. So how come we know about it now? How is it still so important? In this week's episode, I take you to Runnymede to introduce you to the events of 1215, then we look at the document itself and how Magna Carta has been used at various times in history, including on both sides of the argument to abolish slavery. Finally, we discuss the enduring myth around what Magna Carta actually is and how that differs from our collective understanding of it and ask the question, does that discrepancy actually matter?

In this week in British History, presented by Philippa Lacey Brewell of British history Tours, this week covers the death of Henry VII at Richmond Palace and the subsequent ascension to the throne of his son Henry VIII. Philippa covers why Henry VIII's reign promised so much in contrast to that of his fathers and why Henry VII is dubbed 'The Winter King'. In this week the parliament which met to declare that Charles II had been king since the execution of his father, effectively ignoring that the commonwealth had existed. In the same week a year on, Charles II had his coronation at Westminster Abbey. The birth date of William Shakespeare can not be determined for definite but he as christened on 26th April (1564) and died on the 23rd April (1616) which leads to a tempting surmise that he could have died on his birthday as children were baptised on the nearest Holy Day or Sunday following their birth. It is possible to follow in Shakespeare's footsteps in Stratford Upon Avon in Warwickshire.

Belfast Blitz - 200 bombs fall on Belfast in the final year of World War II, a target because of the shipyards one of which had built the Titanic
Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp is Liberated - The first concentration camp to be discovered, Bergen Belsen is liberated by British troops who had been unaware of its existence until their horrific discovery. Indeed the Allies were not aware that any concentration camps existed at this point. The discovery would haunt the memories of those who liberated the camp for the rest of their lives.
The Earl of Bothwell, Mary Queen of Scot's third husband dies in prison - James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell and third husband of Mary Queen of Scots dies in prison in Denmark at a castle called Dragsholm Castle, now a hotel!
Sir Thomas More is arrested and taken to the Tower of London. - Sir Thomas More, close friend and servant to Henry VIII, refuses to swear an oath to uphold the Acts of Succession and is imprisoned at the Tower of London on charges of treason.

Elizabeth I died, in this week in history, on 24th March 1603.
It is because of Elizabeth that I began my love of history and of travelling all the sites I could to follow in her footsteps. From there my love for history and for travelling historical sites began and so on the week of Elizabeth's death I would like to dedicate this week's episode to her.

This week is another busy one in British History (aren't they all?!) 5th February 1953 sweet rationing ended in Britain after 10 years 5th February 1996 First GM food went on sale in the UK 5th February 1758 British Prime Minister Robert “Bobbie” Peel is born. Founder of the modern police force (“Bobbies”) 6th February 1685 Charles II dies aged 54 6th February 1783 died Lancelot “Capability” Brown, the famous landscape designer, aged 67 6th February 1952 George VI dies of coronary thrombosis in his sleep at Sandringham House, aged 56 6th February 1665 Anne Stuart, British Queen from 1702-14 is born at St James’ Palace 6th February 1958 Seven Manchester United football players are killed in an air crash in Munich 6th February 1913 Mary Leakey, British Paleoanthropologist is born. During Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn's Summer Progress of 1535, they stayed for a week at Sudeley Castle.
This was their first stop of the Gloucestershire leg of their Progress. They spent their time here hunting, hawking and generally having a lovely time! It was also from here, however, that Thomas Cromwell sent men out to nearby Hailes Abbey to investigate possible misdemeanours. A vile of red sticky liquid, purportedly the blood of Christ, was ordered to be removed after Anne heard that it was possibly duck's blood! 1535 was the last summer Anne and Henry would spend together. The following May Anne was executed at the Tower of London.
The 1535 Mini-Progress tour, which British History Tours is running in association with The Tudor Travel Guide in September 2020, will visit Sudeley Castle before continuing in the footsteps of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn through Gloucestershire.

In the summer of 1535, Henry VIII took summer progress with his second wife Anne Boleyn. Leaving London only a day after his former friend and Lord Chancellor, Sir Thomas More was executed by beheading on Tower Hill ostensibly for refusing to accept Henry VIII as head of the Church in England. In conversation, Philippa seeks to understand more about the Progress itself, the context in which it took place, the state of Anne and Henry's relationship at this point in time and the speed at which events took a turn for the worse for Anne.
