In this episode, our guest is Dr. Michelle Fritsch is a board certified geriatric clinical pharmacist with a passion for healthy aging and education. She is a specialist in medication use, prevention, and retirement transition in people over 60. She is founder of Retirement Wellness Strategies; co-founder of Propel Comprehensive Wellness; and co-founder of Medipreneurs. She works with a broad definition of health – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social aligned with purpose in each phase of life.
Medipreneurs Summit 2022 is August 26-28 in Cincinnati, OH. It is nearly sold out. 2. This is Medipreneurs 5th Anniversary celebration! 3. Many entrepreneurial pharmacists got their start or reached new levels through Medipreneurs 4. We can talk about the mission/the ‘why’ of Mediprenerurs
Michelle's other business includes work with leaders nearing retirement: 1. Retirement Wellness Strategies is for executives about 2-3 years before retirement. It is a 1:1 virtual 20-visit process to create a clear, one-page strategic plan for health in the transition to retirement and beyond with a clear picture of self-identity beyond that primary occupation. 2. Propel Comprehensive Wellness is that same process in a self-guided monthly-subscription format to help those nearing retirement prevent health decline and prepare for all of the phases to come in life. 3. I left 25 years in academia and innovative practice within health-systems (VA and community health system) to tackle this issue. Too many people, mostly men who are leaders, have a rapid health decline, a divorce, or completely lose their sense of self when they retire. This is nearly always preventable!

In this episode, our guest is Antonio Ciaccia, President of 3 Axis Advisors and CEO of 46brooklyn Research. Born and raised in the world of pharmacy, Antonio Ciaccia has been crawling around pharmacies his entire life. After three years as a pharmacy technician and two years of pre-pharmacy curriculum, Antonio diverted course, graduating from The Ohio State University in 2007 with dual degrees in communications and political science before moving into the world of association management, eventually heading up government affairs for the Ohio Pharmacists Association, where his data analytics work helped lead state officials to audit and uncover $244 million in hidden prescription drug overcharges in the state Medicaid managed care program. After years of studying the pharmacy marketplace, Antonio became increasingly perplexed and concerned as he saw drug costs spiking while payouts to pharmacies were declining and more drugs were being excluded from plan coverage. Knowing something was being lost somewhere in the middle of an ever-growing transaction, Antonio has spent years working to crack the drug pricing code and pull the rug out from what he believes is one of the most dysfunctional marketplaces in the world. Today, he serves as the President of 3 Axis Advisors, a consulting firm that works with Medicaid Fraud Control Units, provider groups, research firms, technology companies, law firms, investment analysts, employers, government agencies, benefit consultants, and private foundations to diagnose and eliminate inefficiencies and inappropriate incentives in the prescription drug supply chain. Within that capacity, he also serves as an advisor to the American Pharmacy Cooperative, Inc. (APCI) and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). He is also the CEO and co-founder of 46brooklyn Research, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the transparency and accessibility of drug pricing data for the American public.
Main Points: Drug pricing is way too complex, and many entities make money off that complexity. Unfortunately, industry consolidation and vertical integration has put many pharmacies in a tough spot, as their once reliable business model has now become increasingly compressed over time. Because pharmacy economics has been primarily derived from revenue harvested from filing prescriptions, the service of pharmacists has been overlooked and thrown into the drug pricing stew. Drug prices are currently being exploited by arbitrageurs, compromising pharmacy viability and their ability to provide a high level of service to patients. Arbitrage must be eliminated, and pharmacists should derive compensation from better aligned incentive structures that emphasize the delivery of value-added services.

During the Covid-19 crisis, we’ve heard anecdotally about women leaders doing a better job and new research backs that up. One study found that outcomes related to Covid-19, including number of cases and deaths, were systematically better in countries led by women. Another looked at governors in the U.S. and similarly found that states with female leaders had lower fatality rates. Pharmacy has and will play maybe even a bigger role in 2021 as we roll out the COVID vaccine, and each of these ladies has been interviewed by media about the #vaccine and represented the pharmacy profession well!

Our guest, Alex Evans is a pharmacist and medical writer currently living in Jacksonville, FL. He grew up in NC and went to pharmacy school at UNC. He’s addicted to the ocean, and during my time there he spent one month each over two summers in Roatan, an island off the coast of Honduras, as an intern at a dive shop, where he filled tanks, loaded the boats, and led dive and snorkel tours. Alex paid for the trips there by teaching marine biology for Duke TIP at their Marine Lab in Beaufort, NC, once I got back.
After graduating, Alex spent a year in South Carolina before moving to Hawaii, where he lived for five years, both on the Big Island and Maui. Dr. Evans got into medical writing in 2016, and grew it from a hobby that made a little 'pocket change' to producing enough income to move into a part-time role at Ascension. He is now working as a pharmacy project manager at Ascension three days/week and writing the other two days.

"Pharmacy Can Do More with More" and her goal is to help create 100 new pharmacy positions next year.
In this episode, our guest is Dr. Kimber Boothe, PharmD, MHA. She is a pharmacist, healthcare leader, and entrepreneur with over 15 years’ experience in Health Systems and 10 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Kimber is the founder and CEO of the Kimber Boothe Group where she provides coaching, consulting, and courses on strategic pharmacy leadership and career development. She calls herself a connector and a pharmovator and is creator of the program Pharmovation, a course and system to ACCELERATE Your Pharmacy Career, ADVOCATE for resources & ADVANCE Pharmacy Practice.
MAIN POINTS: 1. Need for Pharmacists - Pharmacy Can Do More with More There are many reasons why pharmacists are need and we can help achieve the quadruple aim. Despite concerns about pharmacist supply and significant reimbursement concerns, there is a need for pharmacists and we can increase the demand. Historically we try to do more with less and we are hesitant to ask for resources. Should have 1 pharmacist integrated with every primary care clinic 2. Innovation & Intrapreneurship for Practice Advancement - expand pharmacy roles and technology to advance practice across the continuum of care 3. Journey to Justify Resources It is important for us to learn the process to justify resources in our organizations. The main path is usually a business plan. When we come up with a new strategy - we basically have 3 ways to resource it o 1. Use existing resources if there is the capacity o 2. Reallocation of resources o 3. Justifying new resources through business plans Steps: o Strategic Planning o FTE Analysis o Business Plans o ROI o Approval 4. My Best Advice - Be bold, innovative, accountable. Own your career and be involved

In this episode, Hillary Blackburn (host of Talk to Your Pharmacist) joins Tony Guerra of the Pharmacy Residency Podcast, who asks about how applicants should fill in the "leadership" checkbox of the big five that programs look for: clinical, research, teaching, service, and leadership and how you did it on your way to residency. Then he asks what is the advice you would give to yourself as an applicant after you've talked to these leaders in the field, what are the RPDs and residents looking for under leadership?
Tony thinks leaders find it hard to do the humble brag. He’s seen letters of intent that completely omit regional and presidential leadership positions, but this is a gender thing where he’s never seen a male omit this, but women sometimes do. Students think the reader will go to their CV, when the reader might not get to the CV if the LOI doesn't mention these qualifications.
Tony dives into pages 80 and 81 of my book, How Pharmacists Lead, with the personal versus professional accomplishments, reticence for networking, and recognition that some recommenders will do a much better job "talking the candidate up" while others might not. In a book, it's always better to point someone to a chapter rather than a book so that they have a place that they might connect with and get immediate help with their pain point, but Tony always saw Chapter 4 as outlining the challenges and the rest of the book as the solutions.
Tony thinks many students may lack the president or VP position but might have a story like this that demonstrates leadership. Tony thinks that How Pharmacists Lead does a great job of telling stories that these students applying for residency can lean on as a framework to write their own. He asks how Hillary would tell those kinds of stories that demonstrate leadership outside of formal leadership roles.

They started Consana because to change the way that clinical pharmacy services are paid for and delivered. By doing this, they can help patients better manage their medications and chronic disease states and achieve better health outcomes. In this episode, we have as a guest, Pinkey Patel, PharmD, who is a clinical pharmacist and personal trainer that specializes in pre/postnatal corrective exercise. As the CEO/founder of @thesnapback_, she is passionate about bridging the gap in women’s maternal healthcare globally by making pregnancy and postpartum resources accessible, easy-to-understand and helpful in teaching women to advocate for their health in the form of an app, consultancy, and blog! The SnapBack aims to provide women with a safe community, simple resources and evidence-based methods to implement and restore a sense of self, both physically and mentally.
The average time between delivery and the first postpartum follow up visit is six weeks. After six weeks of sedentary living and physical-mental changes, most women are cleared to return to normal activity. Nine months of creating life and readjusting organs, cannot be solved effectively in one 30 minute appointment after six weeks. Women deserve better tools and guidance. Too often, she has seen new mamas returning to their pre-pregnancy workouts and unfortunately sustaining serious injury as they have not allowed their bodies to heal appropriately. From diastasis recti to leakage, there are significant body changes that first need to be addressed before embarking on a weight loss program.
Employing the The Snapback methodology during and after the postpartum period will change the trajectory of how women view “fitness” during pregnancy. Her hope is to make simple, preventative and efficient Snapback techniques to revolutionize the way women recover. Society thrives when women thrive. She wants women to do more than Snapback. She wants them to become a stronger, more resilient version of themselves.
When she’s not playing mama to a 12 month baby boy, Arjun and three-year-old daughter, Karishma, you can find her pumping iron, trying to squeeze in a run or enjoying some good ole’ tex mex, who can say no to chips and salsa? With a baby in one arm and a laptop in the other, she is on a mission to help mamas recover the right way!

Pregnancy to Baby Nutrition with Dr. Lily Naanos
In this episode, we hear from Dr. Lily Naanos who specializes in nutrition for pregnancy, postpartum, and babies. Her passion lies in supporting mothers and babies through holistic nutrition and natural remedies. What sparked this interest was my own journey and challenges transitioning to motherhood and seeing that there was not a lot of support out there for women during this critical stage of life. The most commonly sought advice is from parents seeking support in their baby's transition to solid foods and navigating adverse food reactions including food allergies, food sensitivities and eczema. Dr. Naanos helps with introducing babies to the top allergenic foods in the ideal window of 6-12 months to reduce the risk of future food allergies, as well as helping baby's gut and immune support through food and supplements to help them outgrow food sensitivities and eczema.

More Topics to expect from Linda in the episode: -Retail Pharmacist changes during Covid-19: -wearing masks, Plexiglass at consultation window, curbside prescription deliveries -Managing a team thru Covid, the constant policy changes and procedures. -being proactive rather than reactive. We got a timer in the pharmacy and had it going off every 30 minutes as a reminder to go wash our hands.
-Being a working mom & pharmacist during Covid: -My son’s school closed during Covid and we had a couple of really hard weeks as parents, both trying to work. -We took turns being home with William (our son) and the fact that I work 12-hour days made that easier to manage. My husband took off the days I was working to be home. -My son would come and visit me in the pharmacy from time to time, and explaining to him that he wasn’t able to go into the grocery store was hard. It’s not that he wasn’t allowed, but we both felt like it was an unnecessary risk of exposure. -Doing Zoom meetings with my son’s 4 year old class
Questions I was asked during Covid: -Vaccinations; we have a program called Florida Shots and we had a lot of patients catch up on their immunizations during Covid. -While giving immunizations we were required to wear a face mask as well as a face shield. -A lot of patients asked about supplements or vitamins they could take to improve their immunity: Zinc, Elderberry, Vitamin C were big topics I was asked about -A lot of people inquired about getting their flu shot, we didn’t have any as flu season had passed but people who put off their shot were looking for it. -DIY hand sanitizer.

In this episode, Our guest, Lucy Adkins, PharmD, is the Director of Pharmacy Practice Initiatives at the Tennessee Pharmacists Association (TPA). Dr. Adkins earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University. Dr. Adkins began her pharmacist career as TPA’s Executive Resident in Association Management and Health Policy. After her residency, she joined the staff at TPA in her current role. In her role, Dr. Adkins has built relationships with TPA members and partners, and provided support and resources to them while managing several grants and opportunities aimed at increasing patient access to pharmacist-provided care and elevating the standards of care within pharmacy practice in Tennessee. She is a current member of TPA, APhA, and NCPA, and sits on the ONE Tennessee Board of Directors as well as serves on numerous committees as part of her role. Dr. Adkins currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee and is to be married to Eric Shell, a fellow pharmacist, in September 2020. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, which states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” While this was a major win for women across the United States, the journey to make this change possible was long and challenging. Taking 72 years to come to fruition, countless female activists broke the mold and forever changed the way women are viewed. Just like with other advocacy efforts, such as provider status, it may take several years for something to come to fruition, but it is important to be engaged and aware of issues affecting our profession.
For the past 8 years, Tara has been a compounding pharmacist at Innovation Compounding in Georgia and focuses on women's and men's sexual health. She frequently provides lectures and webinars on Women’s and Men’s Health and sits on a monthly sexual health panel of experts called justASK! which encourages patients and providers to ask questions related to sexual medicine. Tara is working toward her AASECT certification as a Sexual Educator, which she will be the first pharmacist in the nation to obtain.

Since 2018, Dr. Rebecca Van Vleck-DeMoss has been on a mission to educate healthcare professionals and patients regarding the appropriate use of transdermal fentanyl (TDF). Her mission began that year when my pharmacy detected 19 inappropriate TDF prescriptions, that if dispensed, most certainly would have ended in a patient's death. One particular patient stands out in her mind which has given her this passion to spread this vital information. In response to these potentially life-threatening errors, Rebecca created an educational presentation that she’s given to the New Mexico Pharmacist Association, New Mexico Health Systems Pharmacy Association, wrote a blog for TL;DR Pharmacy Simplified, and became a faculty member and presented for the nation-wide continuing education provider FreeCE.com.

High-level overview of Valisure: -- Valisure is the first ever pharmacy attached to a laboratory where every batch of medication is analyzed before being dispensed. -- Valisure’s mission is to help ensure the safety, quality, and transparency in the medications it delivers to consumers. -- All medications at Valisure come with a certificate of analysis, similar to nutritional information on food, and are sold at no additional cost. -- Valisure currently rejects over 10% of the batches we analyze for problems related to dosage, dissolution (how a pill dissolves), and the presence of carcinogens. -- Approximately 80% of medications in the U.S. are made from materials coming from India and China -- The $2 trillion global pharma supply chain is incredibly complex and medications can touch 10-20 hands before reaching the consumer.

Great article: HBR’s What Will U.S. Health Care Look Like After the Pandemic? Robert S. Huckman https://hbr.org/2020/04/what-will-u-s-health-care-look-like-after-the-pandemic?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter_weekly&utm_campaign=insider_activesubs&utm_content=signinnudge&referral=03551&deliveryName=DM76157
We’ve been talking about redesigning healthcare for a while now, and there’s nothing like a pandemic to accelerate it into a recreate mode. Crisis has increased demand for healthcare workers due to increasing cases and hospitalizations. To meet that demand, healthcare staff have been redirected from elective treatments (scheduled surgeries, etc) to care for COVID-19 pts. In some states, like NY, they’ve even allowed 4th year med students to graduate early to meet the frontline demand.
We’re also seeing regulations loosened to allow for expanded scope of practice. States are allowing professionals to practice across state lines to meet the demand. Many regulations have been eased or suspended to improve patient care. For instance in TN: Pharmacist: tech ratio 90 day supplies without authorization Remote verification of prescriptions Authorization for telehealth *this is not federal since they still require PartB providers
Pharmacists are stepping up across the country playing an invaluable role in getting patients their medications, navigating new COVID-19 treatment options, and managing drug shortages. There are multiple reliable sources of information for COVID-19 including our associations - APhA even has CE, ASHP has drug shortage and treatment updatse IDSA Infectious Disease Society of America released practice guidelines for COVID-19 on April 11 Agreed on 7 treatment options and that patients should be recruited into existing clinical trials to Many of the treatments have additional safety concerns and should be individualized based on symptoms and underlying health conditions. For patients who have been admitted to the hospital and in the context of a clinical trial: hydroxychloroquine/chloroquine + azithromycin (however, this combo increases the risk of QT prolongation and should really be reserved for those patients with bacterial pneumonia) Kaletra (ritonavir/lopinavir) AGAINST the use of corticosteroids UNLESS with ARDS Tocilizumab Convalescent plasma
APhA and other pharmacy associations have put together policy recommendations including: Test and treatment of infectious diseases, such as flu, strep and COVID-19. Including allowing immunizations across all states HHS has issued guidance to allow pharmacists to order and administer COVID-19 diagnostic tests. CVS and Walgreens have ramped up testing sites. Ease operational workflows including allowing pharmacists to participate in telehealth and across state lines Allow therapeutic substitutions for drug shortages Reimburse for services provided within the scope
There has been a shortage of primary care workers for years, particularly as the Boomer generation continues to age. How can we continue to utilize nonphysicians - like pharmacists and others to fill in these gaps on this crisis is over?
What are some other ways that you think things will change in healthcare delivery once COVID-19 is resolved? Join the discussion on @talktoyourpharmacist FB page!

Follow Dr. Arden Barry on Twitter for more content and check out this episode where he discusses: There is variable prescriptive authority for pharmacists across Canada: Like how pharmacy laws can differ from state-to-state, there is different legislation across the provinces in Canada for pharmacist prescribing. However, most provinces allow for some type of pharmacist prescribing. Only one province (Alberta) allows pharmacists to prescribe independently. There is currently an advocacy campaign by the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (which is similar to ASHP) British Columbia Branch aimed to allow pharmacists who practice in hospitals or other health care-related settings to prescribe.
Pharmacists should have the authority to prescribe: Pharmacists are the medication experts and already play a significant role in ensuring patients receive safe and optimal medication therapy. Pharmacists are capable of accepting the increased accountability and responsibility for prescribing in the delivery of patient-centered care. Pharmacists bring a unique perspective to prescribing given their knowledge of evidence-based medicine, safety, and drug interactions that is different than other health care professionals (e.g., nurse practitioners, physician assistants). Many pharmacists already prescribe in some form (e.g. over-the-counter medications).
Pharmacists in other parts of the world have the authority to prescribe: Pharmacists in the United Kingdom have had the ability to prescribe since 2006. Pharmacists who had completed a prescribing course in New Zealand were granted prescribing authority 2013. Work is being done in Australia to allow pharmacists to prescribe.
There is evidence that pharmacist prescribing improves patient outcomes: There is a growing body of evidence from Canada that shows that pharmacist prescribing benefits patients. Pharmacist prescribing has demonstrated improved glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, improved BP control in patients with hypertension, and lower LDL-C in patients with dyslipidemia. One Canadian study demonstrated that pharmacist-led care, as compared to nurse-led care, showed improved BP and cholesterol levels in patients with a previous stroke. A recent study called RxEACH that was published in JACC (2016;67:2846-54) showed lower overall cardiovascular risk (lower LDL-C, BP, and A1c as well as higher smoking cessation) in patients at risk of CVD with a community pharmacy-based intervention vs usual care. Another recent Canadian study showed that pharmacists were able to effectively and safely treat uncomplicated UTIs in a community pharmacy setting. This study won the Canadian Pharmacists Journal’s Best Paper of the Year in 2018.

Mark has served in a few different capacities prior to his role at HealthTrust which include Director of Pharmacy, Interim Chief Operating Officer, and Clinical Coordinator at a multi-campus facility. He is also a residency preceptor for the PGY-2 Corporate Pharmacy Leadership Residency at HealthTrust. Topics discussed include: Group Purchasing Organization, what exactly does a pharmacist do there? o GPOs aren’t commonly discussed as career paths for pharmacists and many aren’t familiar with what they actually do. The aggregation of healthcare and the role that pharmacist can play in it o IDNs are expanding rapidly and with those expansions (both from an acute care and outpatient perspective) there are tremendous opportunities for pharmacist to play a role. Efficiencies of scale are being taken for granted in current reimbursement models so there are constant pressures to innovate and streamline processes which are skills that are inherent to pharmacy. · Other roles within a health system besides a Director of Pharmacy in the Hospital o There is a growing trend of hospital systems identifying pharmacy as a leadership pool to draw on outside of just pharmacy. Pharmacists are being promoted to VP of Operations or COO roles due to the convergence of clinical insight (including working with the doctors) and operational performance.

Project management - pharmacists know how to do project management but here are a few additional tips and specifics about it to help you personally and professionally.
I have my student pharmacist on rotation with me, Dustin Chandler who’s a 4th year at Belmont to help me out with this one.
Project management is generally the way in which one person or team manages their resources in order to complete a project. These resources can be anything from time, money, personnel, or physical resources like materials needed to build houses.
Project management is can help people, teams, or organizations complete task effectively and efficiently. By this, I mean if one keeps track of your project, your progress, your goals, what you start with or end with; you can reduce the total cost by planning ahead and analyzing your current resources. As for time, being able to balance all of the projects that you have on your plate along with when they are due is crucial to having them done on time. Like a good chef, you would be able to work on multiple dishes at the same time to have them all come out hot, fresh, and ready for your customers.
· The five roles in PM - https://hbr.org/2016/11/five-critical-roles-in-project-management Written in a way that is intended for major projects. But still applies to more discrete projects such as my definition of the 7 items above.
One major thing you need to have is clear understanding of where you are and what your goals are. If you know where your current resources are allocated and where you need to spend them to accomplish your goals, then you can do better forward thinking. If you goals are clear, there will be less last minute adjustments as you try and get a better picture of what you want out of a project toward the end.
This leads to you needing realistic and achievable goals. One thing that I always heard is that your goals need to be SMART: Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.
Another important aspect that you have to consider is that someone has to be taking stock in how well you are progressing. If you just continuously work on a project without taking a step back every now and then to make sure you or your team is on the right track, you could get to the end and realize you never hit your goal. But that’s not necessarily bad, you’ve gained experience working on this type of project and you’ve attained some value from this failure.
Sponsor: Person at the head of the project who helps get everything available to use. This person is usually the one who either has to approve, fund, or collect your budget/resources. They generally have SOMETHING to gain out of the project
Project manager: this individual (or individuals) is generally the head operator and reports to the sponsor. They can tell how much the budget is, what needs to be done, set timelines, goals, and milestones, along with many other tasks.
Team Leader: while most of the time the project manager takes on this role, this is not always the case. The team leader is the one who facilitates the other team members. Do they have complaints or problems? He listens to them and reports to the project manager. He also does work on the project as well, setting a good example for other members.
Team Members: these are the people who do most of the work on the project and with the project team. These members need to have some sort of skill or area they excel at that would help the project. Have someone who is really good at IT? Great for a project focused on technology, not so great for ones focused on manual labor. Generally skills are either technical, problem-solving based, interpersonal, or organizational. Each team generally needs a member who excels at atleast one of these skills to be balanced. Over the course of the project, you may find that you need to increase your skill balance by adding or subtracting members from your teams. For instance, if you have a team member who never communicates what they are doing, it might be a good idea to replace them with someone with better interpersonal skills.
A project is: a set of interrelated activities, usually involving a group of people who are working together toward a common goal over a period of time.
Getting everyone on a project team aligned behind the project’s objectives isn’t easy. How to surmount this challenge? Ask for help from team members who object to the project goal. Invite everyone’s input during project meetings. And explain the thinking behind your decisions.
Gain trust
Ask for help
Listen to opinions of others
Part III. Define Objectives
The Four Phases of PM - https://hbr.org/2016/11/the-four-phases-of-project-management . Very corporate and written in a way that is intended for major projects. E.G. building a reservoir and hydroelectric dam in Bolivia. But still applies to more discrete projects such as my definition of the 7 items above.
Planning: Set up what problem you are trying to solve, who needs to be involved, and what you want to have done. In this phase you are making estimates about time, resource, and monetary requirements. This is also the phase of a project that has the most fluidity. Nothing is set or is being set in stone yet. Think the scope of the project is to big? Separate it down to smaller ones or trim some of it down on the current one. Have budget concerns? Cut down in other areas to reduce the budget. The major factor in this phase is trade-off. If you want to accomplish everything in a big project then you have to be able to put in the time and money to make it work. Quality = Time + Cost (includes money and personnel hours).
Build-up: At this stage, all of those estimates become concrete. Budgets must be set, schedules must be stuck to, and teams should be formed. Roles and duties need to be assigned. Smaller tasks and goals are generally set for each member of a team to help complete the objectives.
Implementation: At this point, all of the planning should be complete and you move into working on the project itself. You need to have feedback and re-tool aspects that either aren’t working or are behind schedule. Identify the issues and adjust to help the project continue moving. It’s helpful to hold team meetings where you report your progress on your assigned tasks and make sure the goals that you set out are still the goals you’re working on. Has your project about increasing profits in one of your divisions shifted to a meeting on restructuring another of your divisions (might be time to make a new project for another time). Problem solving in this situation is a whole other topic but the main concern is to make sure each of your tasks and processes relate to the main goal and work toward accomplishing the project.
Closeout: While some project seem to be everchanging and evolving, all must eventually come to a close. Project leaders have to end the project at some point, usually by evaluating how/if you’ve accomplished your goal and debriefing the entire team.
Dealing with unknowns -http://www.projectinsight.net/project-management-basics/basic-resource-management Part of the fun of work for me is doing things for which I have no idea about ½ of the variables and 30% of the outcome! That is where smarts and creativity and personal skill come in. If we know everything that we are working on, work would not be nearly as fun. This article is nice in that it acknowledges that you will not have all the information as a PM. Embrace that. It makes the work more fun! You learn as you go, and you pivot when needed.
Planning and what to do when you hit a roadblock
Having a schedule that is fully filled out with each step, task, and follow-up to your tasks is a great help to your project manager. If a project manager has all of the details and steps to a project first, he can make better time requirements, budgets, and help to smooth out the bumps in the road for your project.
So what about the road bumps? There are two major types: ones that you plan or could plan for and ones that you can’t. These known problems are obstacles that some member of your team could feasibly guess could happen. For example, imagine that you have to perform a delicate process as part of your task. One small mistake could make you have to start over, therefore the project manger (understanding how difficult this task is) budgets extra time and resources into the schedule incase of errors. On the other side, we have problems that couldn’t reasonably be planned for or assumed would happen. These include the obstacles boarding on ridiculous such as an airplane crashing into your supplier’s warehouse. At this point, your project manager may need to contact someone to acquire a different supply or resources or change the scope of the project as a whole to accommodate these issues
The question now is, how much time and effort do you spend on planning for errors? The two examples I gave are pretty far ends of the spectrum but your project manager has to select some stopping point for road block planning. If you spend all your time in the planning phase, you risk never actually getting started.
Some tools for PM
Manage projects adaptively
Staff project with people who have a talent for learning and adapting
Deliver early wins
Many of the online tools are great, but are corporate and are way way broader than the definition I need you to have. No need for now to get into budget arithmetic, online tools, or IT solutions. That said, some online sites that address PM are useful. Please review the following in advance of our time together, and come prepared with ideas, questions, and thoughts. This is your time to learn so don’t feel like you need to know everything.
How can you help yourself manage your project?
There are several free programs that exist to help your organization, team, or yourself successfully project manage. Each of them usually has some sort of free version but they also have their own special limitations to consider:
1) Trello
a) Unlimited numbers of boards, checklists, attachments, users, and task lists
b) Attachments are limited to 10 mb in size so larger pictures and videos would not work well.
c) Only style you can use is the Kanban style boards.
2) Asana
a) A very simplified version of project managing tools
b) Several users love the fact that it is so easy to use and pick up
c) Allows use of a built-in calendar, timeline, task list, Kanban board style, the ability to set who is assigned to which project and what the due dates are, some app integration as well
d) Draw-back includes the limit of 15 team-members only. Larger teams might not find the free version as helpful.
3) Click-up
a) Click-up is very customizable as far as the others are concerned. You can alter the basic fields as well as the way you use it (calendar, timeline, boards, lists, boxes, etc).
b) Can set individual priority levels for different tasks if that would help you
c) Can set goals as well as track their progress (using numerical values or otherwise)
d) Drag and drop features lets you customize which members are on which tasks and you can assign comments to make them into new tasks.
4) Meister Tasks
a) Kanban board only but an unlimited number of task members, users, tasks, and projects
b) Allows for use of comments, tags, checklists, tasks, and time tracking features
c) File sharing on this one is up to 20 mb per file.
d) Users claim that this one is very easy to use.
5) Targetprocess
a) While not as robust as some of the other (limited to 1,000 tasks, projects, etc) it does come with one feature which most others don’t: Diagrams.
