Pastor John concluded the Seven Churches of Revelation series by examining Jesus' message to the church in Laodicea, highlighting the danger of a church that has lost its way through complacency, self-sufficient pride, and spiritual blindness (Revelation 3:14–22). Although the Laodiceans believed they had everything they needed, Jesus exposed their true spiritual condition and warned that their lukewarm faith made them ineffective. The path back begins by recognizing that control is an illusion and that Christ alone is sovereign over all things, as seen in Colossians 1:15–18 and reinforced by Jesus' teachings in Luke 12 and Matthew 19. Rather than trusting in worldly success, believers must embrace the true currency of God's kingdom—repentance—which brings spiritual riches, sight, and righteousness. Pastor John concluded with Christ's loving invitation to return to intimate fellowship by opening the door to Him, reminding the church that lasting renewal comes only when Jesus is restored to the very center of our lives.

In Jesus' message to the church in Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7–13), Pastor John reminded us that true significance is not found in worldly success but in faithful obedience to Christ. Using the image of the "open door" and Jesus' authority as the One who holds the key of David, he encouraged believers to patiently trust God's timing, focus on what they can control by remaining faithful in their relationships and obedience, embrace their weaknesses as opportunities for God's strength to be displayed, and keep their eyes fixed on the eternal hope that awaits those who persevere. Drawing from passages such as Isaiah 22:22, Proverbs 18:24, 1 Corinthians 1:27, and 1 Kings 7:21, the sermon emphasized that God delights in using ordinary, seemingly weak people for His purposes. Just as the faithful church in Philadelphia was promised an unshakable place in God's kingdom, believers today are called to hold firmly to Christ, knowing that lasting strength and true importance are found in Him alone.

Pastor John highlighted five ways to breathe life back into a dying church and stagnant faith: wake up from spiritual complacency, strengthen the remaining embers of faith, hold firmly to God's Word as the primary means of spiritual transformation, repent and turn back to God with a sincere heart, and find your true identity and reputation in Christ rather than human approval. Just as Sardis was thought to be impenetrable yet fell because its people failed to remain vigilant, believers today must stay spiritually alert. The sermon concluded with the promise that those who remain faithful will be clothed in white garments, symbolizing victory, purity, and the honor of walking with Christ.

In this message from the 7 Churches of Revelation series, Pastor John examined Jesus’ letter to the church in Pergamum, a city known for its political power, religious influence, and academic achievement, yet also described as the place “where Satan’s throne is.” From Revelation 2:12-17, he shared five ways believers can resist the pressure to conform to the surrounding culture: first, understand the circumstances in which we live without being surprised by spiritual opposition; second, recognize that difficult circumstances never require compromise, as demonstrated by the faithful witness of Antipas; third, walk humbly in times of success, remembering that wealth, influence, and human wisdom can become opportunities for spiritual corruption when compromise replaces conviction; fourth, respond quickly to sin with repentance, allowing God’s Word to correct and transform us; and finally, hold tightly to Christ’s promise of eternal life, symbolized by the hidden manna reserved for those who remain faithful. The message challenged Christians to stand firm in truth, resist cultural compromise, and trust in the lasting rewards found in Christ.

In session two of the “7 Churches of Revelation” series, Pastor John explored Jesus’ message to the church in Ephesus from Revelation 2:1-7, alongside passages from Ephesians, 1 & 2 Timothy, and Acts 18-19. The Ephesian church was commended for being discerning, determined, and dedicated to truth, faithfully guarding sound doctrine and persevering through hardship. Pastor John explained that the lampstand represents one church united in Christ, called to shine His light together. Yet despite their strong theology and steadfast service, the church had drifted off course because they had lost their first love for God and others. Jesus’ correction was clear: remember the love they once had, repent of their coldness, and repeat the practices that once flowed from genuine love. The message reminded us that truth without love leads to spiritual drift, and that healthy churches must remain deeply rooted in both sound doctrine and wholehearted love for Christ.

In Part 8b of the “Knowing God is Loving God” series, Pastor John explained that being filled with the Holy Spirit, as taught in Epistle to the Ephesians 5:18–21, means living under the Spirit’s control and experiencing His power through a deep, ongoing dependence on Him. He clarified that this filling is distinct from the baptism of the Spirit—referenced in Gospel of Matthew 28:19, First Epistle to the Corinthians 12:13, and Ephesians 1:13—which is a one-time act at salvation, while being filled is a continual posture of surrender. A Spirit-filled life is evident in grace-filled words that build others up, a heart of praise and dependence, a lifestyle marked by gratitude, and a joyful submission to spiritual authority. Pastor John concluded that believers pursue this filling by taking “CARE”: confessing and repenting of sin, abiding in Christ, respecting His commands, and engaging boldly in evangelism, trusting the Holy Spirit to work powerfully through their lives.

Pastor John’s Easter message centered on the life-changing power of the good news of Jesus’ resurrection, drawing from Mark 16:1–8 and the example of the women who first encountered the empty tomb. Their journey began with a labor of love as they went to honor Jesus, followed by a step of faith despite uncertainty about the stone, and then the shock of unexpected news that He had risen. Instead of remaining in fear, they were given a mission to go and tell others. In the same way, we experience the power of the resurrection today by choosing to walk by faith, especially when we don’t have all the answers, by moving toward Jesus in moments of confusion rather than away from Him, and by allowing Him to transform our fear into faith, stepping into the hope and purpose found in the risen Christ.

Through His death, Jesus atoned for sin and redeemed us from darkness, and through His resurrection, He conquered death and united believers to new life in Him. Sin originates both from our inherited nature through Adam and from within our own hearts, revealing that it is not just external behavior but an internal condition. Because of this, the solution is not merely behavior modification; avoiding sin alone cannot save us. Instead, Pastor John emphasized personal responsibility—urging believers to focus first on their own sin, actively “kill” sin through the power of the Spirit, and recognize that at its core, sin is a worship problem, where we elevate something else above God.

In part five of the Knowing God is Loving God series, the sermon focuses on humanity and teaches that what we believe about God—and about ourselves according to God’s Word—shapes everything about our lives. Humans are uniquely created by God and intentionally formed, as seen in Psalm 139, and are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26–28), which is expressed through our responsibility to exercise wise dominion over creation, through God’s design of humanity as male and female—both equally valued and reflecting relational aspects of the Trinity—and through the calling to be fruitful and multiply, ultimately pointing to making disciples (Matthew 28). However, sin has distorted the image of God in us, bringing brokenness into creation (Romans 5:12; 8:22). Through Christ, believers can live in a redeemed image of God by receiving their identity as a gift rather than something achieved (Ephesians 1), remembering that they have been freed from the dominion of sin though its presence remains (Romans 6–8), choosing daily to feed the Spirit rather than the flesh through God’s Word and prayer, and ultimately living with hearts set on worship, remembering that humanity was created to glorify God (Colossians 3:2).

In Part 4 of Knowing God is Loving God, Pastor John taught from Psalm 19 that we come to know God through two forms of revelation: general and special. General revelation (Psalm 19:1–6) declares God’s glory through creation, but as Romans 1:18–20 explains, humanity suppresses and excuses this truth—making it sufficient to convict but not to save. For salvation and true transformation, we need special revelation—God’s written Word (Psalm 19:7–11)—which enlightens the eyes (Ephesians 1:17–18) and fully satisfies the soul. Pastor John emphasized that Scripture is SATISFYING: Sufficient to equip us (2 Timothy 3:17), Authoritative in guiding truth, Trustworthy and living (Hebrews 4:12), Inspired and inerrant—breathed out by God (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21)—Self-authenticating because it reflects God’s perfect character (1 John 1:5), and ultimately For You, calling believers to obedience and transformation (Psalm 19:11; Romans 12:1–2; Hebrews 1:1–3). The central message was clear: if we truly want to know and love God, we must treasure, trust, and obey His Word.

In this sermon, Colby Flowers teaches that although God is ultimately incomprehensible to finite humans, He has graciously revealed Himself so that we can truly know and love Him. Drawing from Exodus and throughout Scripture, he explains that God identifies Himself as “I AM,” revealing attributes that are uniquely His (incommunicable), such as being eternal, self-existent, self-sufficient, omnipresent, and unchanging, and attributes that reflect His character and are mirrored in humanity in limited ways (communicable). Flowers emphasizes that God is personal and relational, wanting us even though He needs nothing, and that His self-revelation shows Him to be holy, loving, and righteous at the same time. He explains that these attributes are not separate parts of God but fully and perfectly united in Him, and that the cross of Christ displays how God is both just and loving—judging sin while lovingly paying its penalty Himself. The sermon concludes with a call to worship God as He truly is, to seek to know Him through His Word and Christ, to love Him for who He is rather than only what He does, and to grow in knowledge of God so that our love and joy in Him may deepen.

In “Knowing God is Loving God: Part 2 – Trinity,” Pastor John explained that the Christian God eternally exists as three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—each fully God, yet one God, with the Old Testament hinting at this truth and the New Testament clearly revealing it. Scripture shows the Father as Creator and Provider, Jesus as fully divine in His incarnation, and the Holy Spirit as God at work in believers, while affirming that there is only one God. The message acknowledged the mystery and limits of human understanding, clarified that the Trinity is not a logical contradiction, and warned that distortions of this doctrine lead to serious theological errors, such as those found in Jehovah’s Witness and Oneness Pentecostal teachings. Finally, the sermon highlighted three key applications: the Trinity reveals the nature of true love, since God eternally existed in loving relationship; it provides the model for unity and diversity in the church and human relationships; and meditating on the Triune God brings deep comfort, especially in times of uncertainty and fear.

It explained that theology—thinking rightly about God—shapes us in eight key ways: it gives Structure to reality, reminding us that God is a God of order; it anchors us in History, revealing how God has acted among His people; it calls us to be Accurate, worshiping the true God rather than an image of our own making; it reveals the Plot of Scripture, pointing us to Jesus as the center of God’s story; it is Enough, providing what we need for faith and life; it shows us the Same God who is unchanging across all of Scripture; it Unfolds progressively as God reveals Himself over time; and it Sets us Free, as knowing the truth about God leads to true worship and spiritual freedom. Ultimately, the message encouraged believers to deepen their knowledge of God, because the more we truly know Him, the more we will genuinely love Him.

Jonah 4 shows what happens when life doesn’t go the way we planned and our hearts react poorly to God’s grace. After Nineveh repents and God spares the city, Jonah’s own plans “fail,” and he responds with what the sermon called the three Ps. First, Jonah becomes perturbed—angry and offended that God would show mercy, reminding us that human anger does not produce God’s righteousness (James 1:20). Second, Jonah turns to prayer, but his prayer is more complaint than repentance, revealing how easily we can justify ourselves instead of humbling our hearts before the Lord (Joel 2:12–14). Third, Jonah pouts, sitting outside the city, hoping for judgment, while God uses a plant as an object lesson to expose Jonah’s misplaced compassion and selfish priorities, much like Nathan’s story to David or Elijah’s despair in the wilderness. Through Jonah’s stubbornness, God patiently pursues His prophet, teaching that His mercy is wider than our comfort. The chapter leaves us with lasting lessons: to have ears to hear God’s correction, to trust that God lovingly pursues His people, to take Jonah’s story as a warning against hard-heartedness, and to remember we cannot fix our hearts on our own. Jonah sat outside the city longing for condemnation, but Jesus went outside the city to die for salvation, showing that only the gospel of grace can make sinful people fully accepted and joyfully secure in God’s love.

On January 18, 2026, Pastor John preached from Jonah 3, highlighting “The Marks of Revival” by showing how God graciously gives second chances and looks not at outward appearances but at the heart. As Jonah obeyed God’s renewed call, the people of Nineveh experienced true revival marked by three clear responses: illumination as God opened their hearts to understand the truth, sorrow and conviction expressed through fasting, sackcloth, and ashes, and genuine repentance that led to changed lives and God’s mercy. Pastor John reminded the church that repentance is a biblical and necessary message, that it is never too late to turn back to God, and that believers should practice regular repentance as part of daily faith. He emphasized that repentance must always be connected to Christ, who is greater than Jonah, and called the church to remain available for God’s mission and to never give up on people, trusting that God can bring revival even in the most unlikely hearts.

Jonah’s prayer from inside the fish is shaped like a psalm, echoing Israel’s worship language and showing that even in desperation he turns to Scripture to cry out to God. The prayer reaches a decisive turning point when Jonah descends “all the way down” in utter helplessness and then experiences God bringing him back up, illustrating that true dependence on God often comes only when our own resources are exhausted. Yet Jonah’s prayer also reveals a problem—its heavy focus on “I” exposes lingering self-centeredness and a heart not fully aligned with God’s compassion, especially when contrasted with the sailors’ response. Still, Jonah arrives at the right conclusion: “Salvation belongs to the Lord,” pointing beyond himself to God’s sovereign grace and ultimately to Jesus, the greater “sign of Jonah,” who brings salvation through death and resurrection for all who cry out to Him.

In Philippians 4:14–23, Paul teaches that lasting joy is maximized when believers align their lives with the priorities of the gospel. Joy grows as we share in the work of the gospel, partnering faithfully from the beginning as the Philippians did in supporting Paul’s ministry (vv. 14–16). It deepens when our hearts are motivated by the growth of others rather than personal gain, seeking fruit that increases to their account (v. 17). True joy is sustained when we trust God as the ultimate source of our needs, offering our lives as pleasing sacrifices and recognizing that God often answers our prayers by changing us to become part of the answer (vv. 18–20). Finally, joy is strengthened when we remember we are not alone—we belong to a grace-filled community grounded in the self-giving love of Christ demonstrated on the cross. As Philippians begins and ends with grace, so the Christian life is framed by God’s gracious presence, empowering joyful generosity, faithful partnership, and enduring hope.

Still, Paul does not respond with bitterness but with joy, knowing that regardless of motives, Christ is proclaimed and God’s kingdom is advancing.

A true friend is also Nearby, showing up in need and adversity (27:10), not just in convenience. A good friend is also Direct, willing to offer loving correction (27:5-6), and Sharpening, “Iron sharpens iron and one person sharpens another” Proverbs 27:17. Proverbs teaches that godly friendships are intentional, truth-filled, and rooted in love and wisdom.

In James 3:17, we are given a portrait of wisdom that is not merely intellectual, but deeply moral and relational—marked by purity, peace, gentleness, openness to reason, mercy, good fruit, impartiality, and sincerity. This character-based wisdom is the same wisdom championed throughout Proverbs, which opens with a call to fear the Lord as the beginning of knowledge (1:7) and wisdom (9:10), framing the entire book around the central tension of two paths: the way of the wise and the way of the foolish. The Proverbs—whether from Solomon, the wise, Agur, or King Lemuel—consistently point to the fear of the Lord as the foundation for godly character. Integrity secures and guides; peace flows from humility and restraint; truth and humility make us open to reason; mercy overcomes vengeance; and sincere love covers offenses and brings blessing. True wisdom is not just about what we know but who we are becoming—a life formed by the fear of the Lord and shaped by the character of Christ.

Another thought to ponder is the purpose of marriage. What if God designed marriage not primarily for our happiness, but to make us holy? This perspective encourages us to see our relationships, especially in marriage, as opportunities for spiritual growth and sanctification.
To abide in the True Vine, we need to remain clean and follow the instructions provided in the Bible. We must stay in God's Word, asking and praying for His guidance, and keeping His commandments. This is how we can abide in Him and remain connected to the True Vine.
