When I first got into hardcore I witnessed some pretty wild events. There were fights with skinheads, suburban dudes acting as "crews," countless stage dives, a full scale riot, black eyes, a broken nose, and a broken window at a gig in a second story loft courtesy of a guitar amp. There was also the time we all had to wait it out because someone pulled a gun out in the parking lot. This all transpired within my first two years in the scene. Needless to say I was hooked. With a new EP called “Desperate Times” dropping soon and an appearance on Spreading The Hardcore Reality next month, we figured this would be a great time to catch up with Ethan and Dan and tall about what the band has been up to since we last spoke. Towards the end of the conversation, we spoke extensively on the current state of hardcore and how it effects newer bands.

Greg interviews Anthony and Chris from Long Island, NY's Overthrow on episode 169 of the Hardcore Archive Podcast.

Overthrow were first active in the Long Island and NYHC scene in the mid-1990s and played shows throughout the northeast with bands like E-Town Concrete, Indecision, Kid Dynamite, Shutdown, and Madball.

The guys in ⁠⁠@overthrow_lihc⁠⁠ were all friends before starting the band, and discovered hardcore together while they were in high school. We hear about their experience playing shows in the New York area and how the band came to be affiliated with Triple Crown Records.

Anthony and Chris discuss the reunion shows over the past decade that ultimately lead to the band reforming and writing new music. The conversation shifts to discuss growing older while still maintaining connections to the hardcore music community, how hardcore has provided an outlet for grief over the loss of friends and family, and how hardcore influenced them as fathers.

We hear about the new songs Overthrow has recently recorded, two of which can be found on the popular music streaming platforms, and the forthcoming record due out this fall. We wrap up the interview by hearing about a few of the shows Overthrow has coming up with ⁠⁠@gridironhardcore⁠⁠ and ⁠⁠@e.townconcrete⁠⁠ on August 9th and ⁠⁠@extinctionad⁠⁠ and ⁠⁠@swornenemynyc ⁠⁠on September 8th.

Greg and Josh take another trip down under in this interview Sean from No Hope on episode 168.

@NoHopeHC is a melodic hardcore band from Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, and have a sound that will appeal to fans of Verse, Comeback Kid, and Have Heart.

Sean discusses how he became acquainted with hardcore punk and the importance of CD samplers from punk and hardcore record labels in the pre-internet era.

We also hear about how the band came together, what it is like organizing a band and shows in a small city, and some scene updates from Australia.

On Episode 167 Greg and Josh are joined by Chris Wrenn from Bridge Nine Records.

Chris discusses the early years of the record label in the mid-90s, the origins of Edge Day and the last Ten Yard Fight show, and how proceeds from the sales of the infamous "Yankees Suck" t-shirts financed some of the early 2000s most significant hardcore albums and provided a foundation for his successful Boston sports paraphernalia company, Sully's Brand. Chris announces a forthcoming book about his experiences running the label and associated businesses.

We hear background stories about some of our favorite @⁠BridgeNine⁠ albums and bands including @⁠NoWarning⁠, Carry On, and @⁠WeAreAmericanNightmare⁠, how Ben Affleck came into possession of the Bridge Nine and @⁠DefeaterHC ⁠shits, and reflections and musings on the once important and unavoidable role message boards played in perpetuating hardcore culture.

On episode of 165 of the Hardcore Archive Podcast, Greg is joined by Michael "Popeye" Vogelsang of Calling Hours and Farside.

Greg and Popeye discuss his introduce to hardcore in the 1980s, experiences he had attending hardcore shows in Orange County, and the influence early California hardcore bands like Hard Stance had on him.

The discussion also includes how Farside came together, notable shows that the band played, other notable bands that Farside shared members with, and how the band came to be affiliated with Revelation Records.

The conversation takes a detour from hardcore to discuss Popeye's work doing voice over work, and his career as a voice actor. Fun fact: if you have ever played through The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout 4, you are already familiar with his voice work.

Greg and Popeye shift back to discussing hardcore, and we hear about Popeye's move from California to Pennsylvania, how Calling Hours came together, notable shows Calling Hours has played in recent months, and a tour of Europe Calling Hours is currently on with @BeWellHC.

This is great episode for fans of late 80s and early 90s hardcore, and for those of us who love classic @RevelationRecords bands, and confused fans of the Gary Larson comic who came to the wrong place.

On episode 161, Greg is joined by Rob Antonucci of Achilles fame to discuss his latest project, Into the Light.

Into the Light is a post-hardcore band that will appeal to fans of Quicksand, but you can also detect influences from bands like Hum, Pixies, Nirvana, and Deftones.

Greg is joined by his Worldpurge bandmate, Sean Bailey, who was in Building on Fire with Rob 20 years ago. Sean provides the necessary technical background to keep up with Rob's substantial guitar knowledge and abilities, which Greg (sadly) lacks.

The group discusses the song writing process and band's influences before moving on to a discussion of the gear, amps, and pedal boards Into the Light employ to create their unique sound.

People who are familiar with Rob's other bands will know that the artwork is as much a part of the finished product as the songs. The guys discuss the symbolism behind the artwork used by Into the Light, and the meaning behind some of the lyrics.

On episode 152 of the Hardcore Archive Podcast, Greg and Josh interview Nate DelGallego from Hereditary.

Hereditary is a newer band from San Diego, CA that will appeal to fans of heavy hardcore and beatdown hardcore.

Nate shares his hardcore origin story; he is a second generation punk rocker who was first introduced to skate punk through his father. Later came to find hardcore through his relationship with an older cousin, which he then shared with his brother and Hereditary band mate, Jacob.

We hear about Hereditary's formation and their rapid rise in popularity in the San Diego hardcore scene. Nate covers some of the highlights of shows Hereditary has played with bands like Death Before Dishonor, Missing Link, and Sunami.

Nate is also interested in hip hop and creates beats in addition to playing in Hereditary. Josh and Nate discuss recent trends in hip hop and their mutual love of the genre.

AllxIn is an old school, positive hardcore band from Adelaide, Australia that will appeal to fans of Carry On and Youth of Today. Brendo catches us up on some recent lineup changes, the band's formation and history, their recent full length "What Remains," and their experience touring in Indonesia.

We also hear about the connections AllxIn shares with bands in southeast Asia via their relationship with Set the Fire Records, and some of the similarities and differences in the hardcore communities in the US, Australia, and Indonesia.

Mike Jeffers and Rob Antonucci from Union join Greg and Josh on episode 144 of the Hardcore Archive Podcast.

Union was active in the Buffalo, NY hardcore scene between 1994 and 1997, and released music on Ferret Records and Knowledge Records. They also toured throughout the north east, playing shows with other Buffalo bands of the era like Snapcase and Despair.

Mike recounts the history of band, including his experience putting the group together after moving to Buffalo from New York City, notable shows and tours throughout out the lifespan of the band, recording at Salad Days Studio and Watchmen Studio, as well as how they came to be affiliated with Ferret Records.

Rob and Mike discuss how Union provided a foundation for their subsequent hardcore, punk and metal bands, as well as the enduring influence 90s hardcore acts like Union had on Buffalo hardcore.

Josh and Greg interview Charles Cure from Albany, NY's @spiritkiller_hc on episode 143. Spiritkiller is classic 90s style hardcore with detectable post-hardcore and metal influences, and will appeal to fans of Integrity, Helmet and Orange 9mm.

Charles has also been in a number of notable hardcore bands over the last twenty years including Endicott, Hush, Crisis Actor, Jaws, and Hush.

Charles discusses his introduction to the mid-90s hardcore scene in Albany, NY and his experiences booking shows in the small, rural college town of Potsdam, NY. We hear about the formation of Endicott, how the band came to be affiliated with Equal Vision Records, and some of Charles' experiences touring with the band in the early 2000s.

Charles spends most of the time discussing Spiritkiller, their writing and recording process, some of guitarist Tom's former bands (You & I, the Assistant, This Ship Will Sink), and their EP released on @protaginc.

Mark discusses his early life growing up in Brooklyn, and his introduction to hardcore punk through his older brothers. Mark also shares a surprising and hilarious story about how the band met the cast of Dawson's Creek while on tour in North Carolina, and @katieholmes' subsequent appearance at a Shutdown show.

Episode 138 features a conversation Josh and Greg had with Dan and Alex from Coalition. Coalition was a hardcore band from Michigan in the early 2000s that toured actively until they broke up in 2004. They released records through Smorgasbord, Martyr, and Fight Fire With Fire Records, and had a number of notable connections to some of the founding figures in the hardcore music community. Coalition played Rochester a few times so we discussed those shows at length, and a particularly notorious Coalition show where Porcelly from Judge/Youth of Today made a guest appearance. Episode 120 features a conversation that Josh had with Andy Messer recorded on February 19.

The interview covers bands that Andy has been in over the last two decades. These bands are: ANS, Stymie, Occult Detective Club, Razorbumps, Fugitive, and Barricade.

I've known Randy Carncross for over 25 years. In the late 90s I would go to shows in Buffalo a few times per month. Randy was at every one of those shows. In the early 2000s, Randy played bass for Project Grizzly. In 2003, Randy relocated to Japan for what was initially supposed to be one year. Randy has now lived in Japan for close to twenty years. We talked about his experiences in Buffalo and Japan, including his current band Thirsty. We also talk about how Randy turned a hobby of craft beer into a career in Japan. Rejection Pact is a band that I first noticed in early 2020. I've been wanting to get their vocalist Devin on the podcast since I first started interviewing people and I was just waiting for the right time. Rejection Pact recently released their debut LP "Can We Wait" on Safe Inside Records.

On this episode of the Hardcore Archive Podcast, Greg interviews Hannah Mountain, an addiction councilor and yoga instructor who grew up in the Syracuse hardcore scene. Greg and Hannah discuss their own experiences with mental health and substance abuse recovery, and their origins in childhood trauma. The interview also covers the concept of hardcore as both an art form and a community, and the role both concepts played in Hannah and Greg's formative years and their recoveries later in life. Like many others, hardcore ultimately served as a gateway to Buddhism and Buddhist philosophy for both the host and guest. Because this episode focuses so heavily on eastern religions, No End's track "Avidya" is featured after the credits. This is a great episode for people who are on their own journey of recovery from mental illness, substance abuse, or childhood trauma regardless of whether you are at the beginning of that journey or have been on the path to recovery for many years. I've been saying for a few weeks now that I never thought I'd make it to episode 100 with the podcast. I grew up in downtown Rochester, about 85 miles west of Syracuse, NY. In 1997 I started traveling to shows in Buffalo and Syracuse a few times per month, sometimes more. That Summer, Ryan Canavan and Keith Allen booked the first Syracuse Hardcore fest. Two years later the fest would be renamed Hellfest. A lot of bands that were influential to this podcast either played or attended one or more of these festivals. I've been toying with the idea of making some podcast episodes documenting this festival so hopefully this is the first of many. For this edition, I'm joined by Ryan Canavan and Dan Zimmerman. Ryan was one of the people that organized this festival and Dan played on the final day in Harvest. Harvest was on a full US tour with Endeavor that Summer so Dan talks about that as well. We discuss our highlights from the festival, including a pretty infamous incident on the last day.

For Episode 89 my guest is Andre Foisy. Andre connects a few dots to some recent episodes. Andre grew up with Travis Hance in the small area of Brasher Falls-Winthrop, NY. When I first met Andre, he was playing in the band Husk. Eventually, this band would help introduce him to the members of the band Break of Dawn. Andre ended up playing guitar for Break of Dawn for a few years. We talked about these bands, as well as Andre's current project Locrian. Locrian has a very extensive catalog, including their new release "New Catastrophism."

For Episode 88, I'm joined by Vincent Minervino. Despite spending the last 15 years of his life in New Jersey, Vincent's roots are in the Rochester area. We discussed his early years playing in bands like Arms Length and The Exam. Vincent is probably most known as the frontman for Roses Are Red. We talked about how he joined RAR (then Nobody Cares) as a drummer, eventually switching to lead vocals for the full length I released on my record label. From there, the band toured relentlessly for several years and even released two records on Trustkill. After the band dissolved, Vincent moved to New Jersey and has been there ever since. Through playing in surf bands and becoming more involved in that scene, Vincent and his wife Magdalena ended up forming a record label Hi-Tide Reocrdings. Not long before our interview, the label became a full time endeavor. In the beginning of the interview, Vincent talks about how he had really recently resigned from Apple to go full time with the label. This is yet another great conversation for aspiring musicians to listen to and learn from.

Episode 86 features my first Australian guest. While he's originally from Australia and lives there currently, most of my listeners will likely remember him from his time in Rochester. Matt played drums for To Fester Within, The Breaking Project, The Avram, and No Sweat, all while he was in high school. For Episode 85, I'm joined by BG from the band Risk. The band is interesting because they were already an active band a decade ago. After breaking up initially, they decided to give it another run a few years back. Like a lot of bands, they were slowed down significantly in March of 2020. In the last year Risk has been fairly active with shows and in the last few months they have picked up the pace with even more shows and some fest appearances. Risk has a record called Monologue of Misery that is currently streaming everywhere and there will be vinyl available soon. While I try to keep an eye on the current scene, the bulk of this podcast has focused on the 90s and 2000s in hardcore and punk. During those years, Jeremy Smith played in a lot of influential Buffalo bands. For Episode 81 I am joined on the podcast by Travis Hance. Travis is probably most known for a few of the bands he played in while living in Syracuse in the early 2000s. These bands include Hermon Dekalb, Darker Day Tomorrow, and The Funeral. We spend a bulk of the conversation talking about these bands and Syracuse Hardcore in general. Before that though, Travis talks of growing up in the really small town of Brasher Falls, NY (really northern New York, near Potsdam University) and building a scene and playing in bands around there. I didn't realize before the interview that Travis had grown up with Andre Foisy (Break of Dawn) and played in a band with him growing up. We talk about that, as well as them jamming together currently for a new project. Travis is living in Albany now so that comes up during the conversation a few times, as well as him taking on a career in tattoo removal. We talk about many other subjects during our conversation, including addiction, violence at shows, spirituality and its connection to hardcore.

One thing I've always loved about Rochester is the diversity and originality of our bands. In the last two decades, Travis Johansen has been a part of many of these diverse bands. Greg Benoit (Rochester Hardcore History) and I had the privilege of interviewing Travis for this episode. We talk about some of his earlier projects, as well as all of the notable bands Travis has been in. The bands we talked about include Borderline, The Hue of Two, Science vs Witchcraft, Joywave, Pomelo, and Kopps. Travis also has some of the more interesting tour stories to hit the podcast in a while. This episode was also recorded one day after the tragic shooting that occurred in Buffalo on Saturday May 14. We talk about our feelings in this at the beginning of the episode. There will be plenty more discussion on topics like this moving forward with this podcast.

Recently I have been trying to get more Syracuse interviews for the podcast. I've been wanting to learn more about the history of the scene there, as well as how straight edge got to be so influential there. I knew Tom Ranger would be able to tell me a lot about how this city built such a dynamic scene over the years. Tom has been a part of the scene there for over 35 years and he even talks about the first show he went to. It sounds like that show was a first show for a lot of people in Syracuse. We spent about the first half of our conversation talking about the Syracuse scene from 1986-1997 before we started talking about the bands Tom has been in. We also talked about alll of the media attention the straight edge scene was getting around 25 years ago. When I first met Tom, he was singing in the band Eternal Youth. We discuss Tom's other bands as well, including Trouble Loves Me, Attitude, Glue, and Popular Music. The connection between Rochester and Syracuse is discussed on the podcast again with Tom's bands. We also talk about the extensive touring Tom did with Attitude, including some of the first Sound and Fury fests and two trips to Europe. This is definitely one of the more informative conversations I have had on the podcast in a while.

It took 77 episodes, but we have finally ventured up to the great white north. Miles Between Us was a band from Ottawa that I had the pleasure of working with on my record label over 20 years ago. For this discussion, I was joined by Matt Ford, Matt LaForge, and Adam aka Solly. Everything from the demo to the full length was discussed in this deep dive. We also talked about playing early shows with bands like Count Me Out, No Warning, and American Nightmare. We talk about how they ended up releasing their full length through Think Fast records, a label that became pretty well known in hardcore around that time. Episode 76 features a conversation with Nate Derby. If you have been a part of the music scene in the Rochester area in the last two decades, you are likely familiar with some of the bands Nate has been a part of. We talked about his early beginnings in Canandaigua, helping put on shows locally at All Things Art and playing with some local bands. Nate eventually joined Heavy Hearted. The most notable of Nate's bands that we discussed in depth on this episode was Such Gold. Nate detailed how Covid derailed most of their 2020 and 2021. We didn't get much of a chance to talk about The Weight We Carry, Holy War, and a few other Such Gold topics. I'll probably do a part two with Nate later this year.

For Episode 75 I had a conversation with Tom Cavanaugh. We mostly talked about his time playing in bands in Syracuse. The bands we discuss include Blood Runs Black, Hermon Dekalb, Darker Day Tomorrow, and Santa Sangre. This is the first time that I can think of that I've interviewed someone who was on tour over 2000 miles away from home when 9/11 happened. Tom also has a really cool story about becoming friends with the band Overcast in the 1990s. Fast forward about a decade and Mike from Overcast was now playing in Killswitch Engage. Tom talks about how he ended up becoming the guitar tech for Killswitch Engage for many years, leading to him traveling the world with the band. I'm sure I could have made an entire episode just asking him questions about all of the people he met and experiences he had during these years. I also could have spent an entire episode asking Tom about all of the classic Syracuse Hardcore bills some of his bands were on. Blood Runs Black played some pretty legendary New Year's Day shows, among others. Tom has been living in South Florida for about 20 years and has also even played with a couple bands down there. We also talked about how Santa Sangre has taken on a second life some two decades later, with Closed Casket Activities reissuing their LP. For Episode 74, I'm welcoming Dave Steele and Iggy Imig from Abnegation to discuss the band. We talk about the history of the band as well as what the scene was like during the early 1990s when Abnegation formed. Iggy also had some pretty outspoken lyrics in their earlier material and we talk about what kind of reaction they would get from people that were otherwise friendly. We discuss the evolution of their sound, as they started to develop more and more metal influences. The Abnegation reunion is also brought up throughout the conversation. One of the main focuses of this podcast has been documenting Rochester/Buffalo/Syracuse Hardcore from 20-25 years ago. I've made it a point to cover newer bands and people as well, but I consider the aforementioned years to be some of my more formative years. My favorite Rochester Hardcore bands came along during these years, and I was lucky enough to see Bad Business develop behind the scenes from the beginning. One common theme of this interview is friendship. A lot of Rochester bands during this era were formed by close friends and Bad Business was definitely one of those bands. Before they were even a band, all of us were traveling together all over NY, PA, and other parts of the Northeast. In late 2001, Dan, Brandon, and Jeff decided to form a straight edge band. They asked Shawn to join as their vocalist and the band was off to the races. This interview chronicles the whole four years the band was together, from the first two shows in early 2002, until the last show and reunion in 2006 and 2007. We talk about their recordings, tours (and a few crazy stories from them), the Rochester scene, and how Bad Business ended up on the cover of Maximum Rock N Roll. One of my favorite bands to come out in the last two years is Deal With God from Syracuse. I had their vocalist Dylan on the podcast back on Episode 48 and I knew I'd have their bassist Colin Mraz on eventually. Similar to Dylan, Colin recently moved to Syracuse in the last couple years. This podcast was started in large part as a way to document the hardcore scene in Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse. I have had a pretty strong focus on bands that were active 20-25 years ago, while trying to do my best to keep an ear out for current bands. If you have been actively involved in hardcore in the northeast in the past 25-30 years, you have likely been to a show with Jeff Lasich.

I first met Jeff in 1998 when he was living in the Syracuse area. We had a very similar interest in hardcore, straight edge, graffiti, and fanzines. I don't know if I ever realized that Jeff didn't actually live in NY for that long until we did this interview. He was up here so often for so many years I guess I just assumed he always lived up here. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, Jeff also lived in Philadelphia for a time before moving back to Pittsburgh. If you have been to This Is Hardcore or FYA fest (or seen videos like me), you have likely seen Jeff on stage taking photographs. We talk about how Jeff got into photography and how he has evolved as a photographer.

We also discuss fanzines too. When I first met Jeff he was doing a zine called Death Before Dishonor. Most people listening to this are likely more familiar with Start Today, the fanzine Jeff started a few years later. Due to printing costs getting higher and higher, Jeff has made the fanzine available to download in recent years. I'm including a link to the pdf of a recent issue in the show notes.

Jeff also has put out some pretty good hardcore records on his label Bottled Up Records. We talk about Jeff working with bands like Have Heart, One Up, Blistered, Outlast, and The First Step.

It's always fun interviewing people that haven't been in 50 bands. You will also notice Jeff and I talked about a show I did here in 2003 when Rochester had a large power outage due to an ice storm. It's interesting because our power went out in my house during this interview due to the wind storm I mentioned in my intro to the episode.

One of the first people I interviewed for this podcast all the way back on Episode 2 (and 10) was Mike Jeffers. I figured since we did a good job profiling his time in bands two years ago, now would be a great time to check in to see what Mike is up to lately. Right off the bat, I want to say I put this episode together a bit differently than usual. Ordinarily, my guest and I will chat for a few minutes before the interview starts. For this episode, I'm including the entire conversation basically unedited. Mike is a teacher in Buffalo and anyone who has been following the news lately knows that things have been pretty rough there lately. While I have been editing this interview, the Buffalo school district has seen their Superintendent resign. From what Mike was saying in the beginning of our conversation, this definitely seems like a step in the right direction. Our conversation shifts toward Buffalo hardcore and basically stays there for the entirety of our discussion. There has been a lot of new bands sprouting up in Buffalo since the pandemic started so I was definitely curious to get Mike's take on the current state of their scene. Of all the bands Mike is involved in, Juggernaut has been the most active since things started to reopen last year. Mike gives an update on their recent shows and record Hollow Black on Irish Voodoo Records. Mike also gives us a brief update on his other bands Longest War, GOA, and Wrong The Oppressor. Joe Tunis has been an active participant in the Rochester music scene for the last three decades. As most listeners of this podcast are probably aware by now, I got into our local music scene in the mid-90s. By that time, Joe was playing in the band Hilkka and had already formed Carbon Records. Much of our conversation focuses on the 1990s and early 2000s. In the late 1990s, Joe also formed Pengo, a No Wave band with Jason Finkbeiner and John Schoen. Jason and John had both released music previously on Carbon Records. Joe and I discuss the history of Carbon Records, as well as what he has been up to in recent years with the label. Hilkka played all three of the Fat Day shows my friends and I booked in Rochester. Naturally, I had to use this opportunity to talk about Fat Day. Joe is also heavily involved in the experimental noise scene. We talk about this briefly during our conversation and I plan to have Joe on again eventually to cover any ground we missed. Episode 63 features another trek down to Bath, NY. This time I'm joined by three members of the band The Red Death. I had Paul and Josh on for the whole interview and Aaron joined me for the second half. There's a couple other people who played in The Red Death that I will likely have on future episodes. The Red Death were an extreme metal band that existed from 2002-2008. They were one of the first bands that I can remember that included hardcore kids playing that style of music. Shortly after, there were a lot of bands playing that style of music and many of them came from the hardcore scene. The Red Death ended up releasing records on Metal Blade and Siege of Amida (US distribution through Ferret). Not bad for a band from a town with a population just above ten thousand people. The first half of our conversation focuses on Paul and Josh coming up in the Bath scene, which eventually would lead to them interacting with the Rochester scene. We discuss their early band Another Day Forgotten and their connection to the Rochester scene. I talked with Josh and Paul about the early years of The Red Death and them signing to Metal Blade. Right after we discuss the fallout with them and Metal Blade, we are joined by Aaron. Aaron is originally from Auburn, NY and also played in the band If Hope Dies during their early years. The second half of the conversation focuses more on the Godmakers album and the eventually break up of the band. We also discuss some of The Death's favorite spots to play when they were a touring machine. Similar to my interview with Jimmy Stadt last year, I think aspiring touring musicians would definitely benefit from listening to this one.

For Episode 62 I had a brief chat with Kendal Hall from the band Heavy Is The Head. A fairly new band out of Richmond, Heavy Is The Head will soon be releasing their debut 7" on GGT Records. I got the information from Kendal on how the band formed, how they hooked up with the label, and what's in store for the band in the near future. We also talk about how hard it is to put bands into genres these days. One of the things that drew me to this band was the lyrics so I'm glad we got a chance to discuss where Kendal's ideas come from. Episode 60 has been in the works for some time. For more than a decade in the early 2000s, Thom Bulman was a staple of our local music scene. Having played in tons of bands including One Year Nothing, Verona, They Sleep They Dream, Sakes Alive, and Youngbloods, I knew Thom was someone I'd want to have on here eventually. I quickly realized through connecting with him on social media that Thom has gone on to create a very unique and cool business for himself. Not only that, but while preparing for this, it occurred to me that Thom played in a lot more bands than I initially thought he did. He also spent a lot more time on the road than I realized he had before we did the interview. We talk about the dozen or so bands that Thom played in here, as well as him starting the Rochester Scenester (Scenster) message board. It's pretty cool to see that he had a sense of humor about the spelling mistake all these years later. That message board ended up becoming one of the last significant places to promote local music on the internet before social media took over everything. After Thom stopped playing in local bands he began tattooing pretty seriously and even ended up on Season 9 of INK Master. Thom built up quite the profile by doing a lot of pop culture tattoos (tattoons). Since the pandemic started, Thom has become pretty prolific in the shoe community with his "Bull Airs" brand. Thom has been making pop culture themed shoes and all of them look phenomenal. It really feels like every time I log onto my Instagram, Thom has recreated my childhood with another amazing pair of shoes. I will include some links below so you can check out some of his current work. I don't have many regrets when I post an episode, but I do wish I had spent more time talking with Thom about Bull Airs. I will try to get him back on in the future, maybe even for a live episode.

They got a couple new members to round out the new lineup and now the band members are in Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Vermont. In yet another edition of me catching up with old friends, I got the chance to catch up with Rich aka Spindel for Episode 58. I often talk about how great and diverse the scene was in Rochester in the late 90s. Spindel was a large part of our scene, through doing a zine/label, booking shows and later as a part of the band The Crimson Guard. We talk about all of this and so much more during our trip down memory lane. One of the shows Spindel booked (in my old basement) was for Against Me! in 1999. Episode 57 features my conversation with Mario and Kim Cangemi from Upstate Records. When I first started getting ready to do this podcast in March of 2020, I noticed that Upstate was a pretty good up and coming label out of Albany. Formed in 2017, the label has new or upcoming releases from bands like Brick By Brick, Bushido Code, Gloves Off, Smash Your Enemies, and tons of other bands. We talk about the influences behind starting the label, running a record label during a pandemic, as well as the growth and learning experiences they have had during this time. It was also interesting for me to hear about running a record label during the digital/streaming era that we are currently in. We talked about Albany Hardcore and Troycore briefly during our conversation. I'm sure I could come up with an entire episode of questions about that scene. It's really an inspiration to me to see a husband and wife running a record label like this and I'm excited to see where they go from here. For Episode 54, Greg Benoit (Rochester Hardcore History) and I had the privilege of interviewing Michael Honch about his time in the very early days of Rochester Hardcore. Michael played in local bands Nuns on Death Row, Mr. Clean, Hunger Artist, and Powerline. After that, he moved to DC for Graduate School. On episode 51 I am joined by one of the funniest people I have met through punk and hardcore. I first met Justin Kern in the late 90s through Pat Dent, another one of the funnier people I have met through this subculture. He grew up in Dunkirk, NY and he ended up going to school in Buffalo with Pat. The idea of living in a small town is discussed quite a bit during our conversation. While in Buffalo, Justin played in a plethora of musical projects. Two of the more notable bands Justin was in while in Buffalo were Robot Has Werewolf Hand and They Live. After I initially interviewed Jim Byrne on episode 18 we talked about doing an episode dedicated to our favorite breakdowns. I think in the beginning we were thinking about maybe talking about 10 or 20 breakdowns. As I got closer to episode 50, I suggested we make it 50 breakdowns. We have spent the better part or the last three months going back and forth on tracks, ranking and reranking them. Judging by the fact that there was still songs by bands that we had trouble fitting on, I'm sure we could have made the list 100 or more. We talk before our top 50 about honorable mentions and there's even a few glaring omissions that we talk about. This was a really fun project and it made us both remember some of the things we love most about hardcore. Feel free to send me some hate mail with all the songs we missed. Catching up with old friends has been a constant theme with this podcast since the first episode. I first became friends with Michael Bendlin in the summer of 1999. Later that year, he and I were a part of a crew of people that traveled down to Boston for the last Ten Yard Fight show. Mike grew up in Bath, about an hour south of Rochester in the Southern Tier. We spend a good amount of time discussing and reminiscing on the late 90s and early 2000s hardcore and punk scenes. After that, Michael lived in Kansas, New Jersey, New York City, Louisville, and Richmond before returning to the Southern Tier. We talk about this as well as his experience roadying for Sakes Alive. We talk about partying and addiction quite a bit as well. We both had some pretty wild experiences and like I said in the episode I am not trying to glorify or condone anything. It's nice to see that Michael and I have both moved on and learned from those experiences.

"Hardcore is not a spectator sport-" Dylan Wainwright. Over the course of 48 episodes in a year and a half, I have interviewed maybe 5 people I didn't know very well before. These interviews are some of my favorite ones to conduct, despite me rarely leaving my comfort zone otherwise. Dylan Wainwright is someone I knew of but hadn't actually met or talked to prior to interviewing him. As with the other 4 or so conversations with people I didn't know, the interview turned out great. As I mentioned during the interview, I knew I would interview Dylan eventually. I decided to do the interview a little sooner after I saw his band Deal With God. He has been in and is currently in several other bands too. The other active bands are The Thrill and Stand Alone. We discuss these three bands as well as all of the other bands he has been a part of. As with a lot of my other interviews, we talk about hip hop quite a bit as well. Towards the end of the conversation, we also discuss celebrities being involved with punk and hardcore. Deal With God and Stand Alone are going to be playing the New Year's Day show in Syracuse in 2022. As we get closer to 2022, we are nearing twenty years since the formation of the band One Up. On this episode I got a chance to chat with their vocalist Greg Polard and guitarist Donny Mutt. We go pretty deep on the history of One Up. The band was primarily active from 2002-2005 so there's a lot of memories from that era discussed on this episode. We talk about all of their records, including their discography that was recently released on Hellminded Records. We also discuss the tours and Posi Fests that One Up was a part of. On this episode I had the opportunity to chat with my old friend Ian Courtney. Even though he is from Detroit, I used to run into Ian frequently in the early 2000s. We first met in Toronto and I would see him in many other places after that, all because of hardcore of course. We talk about a lot of these experiences, as well as the bands Ian played in. The main bands are Through Thick and Thin, Hawk I, Detroit Diamonds, and Stage Dive. We also talk about many of the bands Ian has filled in for and roadied for (Varsity, Coalition, Life Set Struggle, The Final Plan, Desperate Measures, Detroit Birds, RZL DZL, Poison the Well, Cold As Life, Trephine, and Lion of Judah). There's some pretty cool tour stories sprinkled into our conversation for sure. Obviously, Michigan Hardcore is discussed as well. Ian spent a year in South Florida in 1999 so we talk a bit about the scene there at that time. We also spend a good amount of time talking about booking hardcore shows, something I'm pretty familiar with. Having been involved in the movie industry for most of the last two decades, Ian is now working on his debut feature film Movie Theater Massacre. As always it was good to catch up with an old friend. I talk a lot on the podcast about the connection between Buffalo and Rochester, especially in the late 90s and early 00s. My guest on episode 44 is someone who lived in both cities during his college years. This episode also presented another opportunity for me to reconnect with yet another old friend. I'm starting to sense a theme here. Anyway, Vincent Garguilo has a strong connection to both Buffalo and Rochester. He has been in a few bands from this area (Dead to the World, Sincerely Yours, and Taken by the Burning). Since moving back to NYC in the mid-00s, Vincent has also played in a few other bands. These bands include The Only Weapon, Behind the Bullet, and Tightrope Walker. He also had a stint as a guitarist in Shai Hulud before he moved to NYC. We discuss all of these bands, as well as some of the other interesting things Vincent has done outside of hardcore. We also talk about him traveling down to Alabama to check out Furnace Fest this year. Additionally, Vincent has had some pretty interesting business ventures that he talks briefly about. For Episode 43 I had yet another opportunity to reconnect with an old friend that I hadn't spoken to in a long time. Dan Butson played guitar for a handful of Rochester area bands from 1995-2002 before moving to New Orleans. We talk about the bands Dan played guitar in (Initial Doubt, Something Sacred, and a few other locals). He also talks about his experiences living in New Orleans for most of the last two decades. One of the main reasons I started this podcast was to document how great the Rochester Harcore scene was in the early 2000s. Many great bands have come since then, but a lot of the foundation was built for those bands 20-25 years ago. In addition to all of the diverse bands that were being created in Rochester, there were also quite a few out of town bands that built a following here and helped influence our city's sound. During this time, Jimmy Stadt became heavily involved with our scene. We discuss most of the bands he was in, as well as a lot of the bands that became part of our scene even though they weren't from here. Most people listening to the episode are probably familiar with Polar Bear Club. We also talk about Jimmy's earlier bands (Fedde, The Avram, and Tamiroff), as well as more recent ones (Shy Tooth and Bad Bloom). One thing that we also made a point to discuss in detail was how important our local venues have been over the years. With respect to the other people I have interviewed, this was probably the easiest interview I have ever done. A lot of times I didn't even have to ask a follow up question. There's a lot I learned from my conversation with Jimmy. I highly recommend this episode to anyone who has aspirations of being in a serious band. I've known Chris Nguyen for 15 years or so. I'd say probably 75% of the times I have run into him has been at a show Borrowed Time was playing. When I first heard he was their new vocalist, I thought that there is really no better person to join that band. As you will learn from the interview, Chris had been a vocalist in a handful of local bands in the early to mid 2000s. He was always a big supporter of Borrowed Time so it really made sense that he would join their band eventually. Chris's first show with the band is Sunday September 5 at Photo City at the Hayward Family memorial. If you happen to listen to this episode after that, they will also be playing again in Rochester Montage Music Hall on October 25 with Slapshot and Sheer Terror.

One thing I have always loved about punk and hardcore is all of the combinations of different characters you will find. Will Carroll is definitely one of the more unique individuals I have come across in this scene. To say that Will is involved in a lot of projects currently would be an understatement. Everything all started with his National Teenset Outsider Zine and 45 Kid Comic. From there, he has branched that out to a Radio show on Sunday nights on WAYOFM radio. When I first started this podcast, I made a pretty big list of people I wanted to interview eventually. Aidan Monahan was one of the first names I wrote down. Originally born in Ireland and having lived on both the east and west coast, Aidan has definitely lived a nomadic lifestyle. We touch on all of the different places he has lived as well as the bands he has been in. Because Aidan mentioned having a bad memory and they were in both bands together, we figured it would be great to have our buddy Jim Byrne back on the podcast. While a couple of these stories were told by Jim and Brendan last year, it is cool to get Aidan's perspective. If you have listened to at least a few episodes of this podcast, you have probably heard more than a few references to a Standfast/Building on Fire tour I helped book and tried go on as a roadie in the Summer of 2001. Due to a lot of bad luck, Building on Fire ended up completing that tour separately. While the tour clearly isn't looked at as a success by any means there are still plenty of interesting (and often times funny) moments to discuss. We also took a look at the first album that Building on Fire released on Hex Records. Towards the end of the conversation, we also realized that there is plenty of more to talk about regarding the history of Building on Fire. There will be a part two later this year. Anyone who has listened to a few episodes of this podcast is probably already aware that I love hardcore, punk, and hip hop. I'll jump at any chance I get to discuss all of these topics in one conversation. Benny Beyond got his start in the Rochester music scene performing in bands like Destrux and I object. Fast forward a few years and Benny was then singing for Like Wolves, one of the more beloved Rochester bands of the last 20 years. About ten years ago when Like Wolves was starting to slow down, Benny told me had taken an interest in rapping and would be recording some tracks. That was one of those full circle moments for me. Anyway, our conversation touches on all of these musical projects, as well as a few other projects Benny has been involved with over the years. Back on episode 7 I did a feature on local small business owners. I didn't talk politics or social issues with the guests on that episode. Immediately after it aired, Black Lives Matter started receiving a lot of attention intentionally again. For a few weeks late last Summer, if felt like Rochester was one of the hubs for activism. Matt and I were both present for many of these protests so I felt it was important to have him back on to get his take on a lot of these pertinent issues. One of the fun things about doing this podcast is getting to know people a little bit better. On this episode, I got a chance to get to know Joel Staniszewski.
