With the high school football season right around the corner in North Platte, we know that many people are excited about the upcoming year and ready to get back out to the games.
That’s why we invited head coaches Kevin Dodson of St. Pat’s and Kurt Altig of North Platte into the studio for this episode. As most fans know, there are some big changes in store for both schools in 2022. St. Pat’s will be making the move down to 8-man football, which was a tough decision but one that the community’s supported. And North Platte will take the field for the first time under Coach Altig as they look to rebound from the tough playoff loss last year.
We’ll talk to them both about what’s in store this year and what upperclassmen have stepped into leadership roles for each team. Plus, we’ll discuss the financial side of the game and what students can get out of the NebraskaLand University program we offer.
Here’s some of what you’ll learn on this episode:
· The move from 11-man to 8-man football for St. Pat’s and what that means moving forward. (3:06)

The current economic environment has many people worried. Interest rates are up, the stock market is volatile, bitcoin has lost tremendous value, and inflation seems to keep growing. So on today’s episode, we want to sit down and discuss the economy and the future trends we should expect to see with two economic experts, Mike Jacobson and Marc Werkmeister. Mike is the CEO of NerbaskaLand Bank and the Senator for District 42 and Marc is a Certified Financial Planner with PFA.
Inflation is when too much money is chasing too few goods and services. Looking at where we were with supply chain issues and the influx of money into the economy with stimulus checks, inflation was bound to happen. To combat inflation, the Federal Reserve raises interest rates, promoting people to stop buying and start borrowing. We are seeing this impact the housing market already with higher-interest loans.
By a strict definition, we are not technically in a recession yet. However, we are experiencing some signs of an upcoming recession. Whether we will end up in a full-blown recession isn’t known yet. We’ll explore some scenarios and what you should be doing to protect your wallet.
Join us today as we get into these topics:
· What causes inflation and what can be done to fix it?
· Why stocks and bonds are both experiencing volatility.
· What we should be doing to protect our financial plans
· How the housing market is responding to the economy

A new community space may be on the horizon! On today’s episode, Megan McGown and Leland Poppe, co-chairs of the Wellness and Recreation Alliance join us to discuss the new recreation center project. This project has been in the works for over 20 years and their vision for the new recreation center is coming straight from the community: a larger building, a walking track, a larger swimming pool, and much more.
The current multi-use gym will stay but they hope to adjust the swimming pool, with an added addition above for a figure 8 track on the second floor. They are also aware of the sentimental value of the current building, including its dome feature. In creating the new recreation center, they hope to incorporate the natural light and some similar features in the new building and its additions.
The Wellness and Recreation Alliance hopes we’ll see funding for the new recreation improvements on our November ballots. In the meantime, you can get involved in this project when the mayor calls a work session in July. The city council will discuss ideas and implementations for this project and then they will decide whether it goes to the ballots in November. If you’re excited about this project, now is the time to contact your city council representatives and let them know you want to see this project on your ballots!

Our guest today, Edy Patterson, is a former winner of the Women of Achievement award, the Nebraska State Diplomat of the year in 2015, and is a long-time business developer here in North Platte. Edy started her journey as a business owner when she was just a young mom. Starting her own nursery helped her reach personal and financial goals. After this venture, she began flipping houses, trained as an interior designer with Sherwin Williams, and eventually bought a failing business and brought it back to life.
In 2000, Edy became part of a TIF project for the redevelopment of a building that eventually would become her printing company. TIF allowed Edy and her husband to capture their future real estate taxes and in turn that tax savings allowed them to set up and fund their new commercial building, elevating the community through jobs, sales tax, and more.
To Edy, one of the most important parts of being a business owner is taking care of your employees. Leadership is about being responsible, including financially in order to take care of those employees. We’ll explore Edy’s creative and varied journey as an entrepreneur here in North Platte, the advice she has for young business developers, and more on today's show.
Join us today as we discuss further:
· Edy’s first business venture as a young mom
· The process of flipping houses and investing in real estate
· The TIF project and redeveloping a building

How are you adjusting to daylight savings? There is a new bill working its way through the senate and house right now proposing an end to the time change, the Nebraska Lock the Clock Bill. Our guest today, the CEO of the NebraskaLand Bank and newly appointed Senator Mike Jacobson, knows a lot about this bill and joins us to discuss his journey from our bank to senator.

As many of us have probably noticed, the housing market has become a real issue in the past few years. Today, two of our senior Vice Presidents, Tonya Duncan and Josh Harm, join us to discuss the real estate market in North Platte. Tonya is our mortgage lending manager and Josh is our business banking manager. They work with clients throughout the North Platte market to help them in their home buying journey. But for many, this has been a lot harder of a dream to realize recently.
Right now, we currently have 30 homes on the market as compared to a healthy market of around 150 homes. Danielle’s seen the lack of inventory first hand. While we are seeing an influx of new community members, we are also seeing a lack of adequate homes to buy. Volatility is certainly making this a complicated environment to navigate.
With Tonya and Josh, we are going to explore some possible solutions to this problem and how they could help the families of North Platte. Alternative construction may be a strong trend that can offer some pricing relief. Townhomes also seem to be a huge untapped potential in North Platte. It gives first-time home buyers or even renters another option to look at. We’ll explore these options, jobs, housing programs, and more on today’s show.
Join us today as we further discuss:
· What does the North Platte housing market look like?
· What first time home buyers are facing in the market
· The troubles with building versus buying
· How alternative construction and townhomes could help the market
· The role employers and jobs play in the housing market

A lot of new community projects are coming into the area! On today’s episode, Chris Bruns, the chairman of the Board of Lincoln County Commissioners, joins us to discuss some of these community developments. Continuing our conversation about the new rail park proposal, Chris shares why projects like this need support.
Last year in the legislature, a bill was passed allowing Nebraska to have five inland port authorities. Chris is spearheading a port authority project himself. One problem we’ve seen with our current supply chain is land-locked logistics issues.
An inland port could address these problems, while also attracting multinational firms to our area. The goal would be to have an inland port authority district, which we hope to encompass the new rail park. We’ll also discuss the possibility of a new golf course, housing issues in Lincoln County, Chris’ bid for the legislature, and more.
Join us today as we further discuss:
· Why projects like the rail park and inland port authority are important
· Why our location can be competitive for this project with the rail park
· The exciting new golf course being built
· How we can address the housing issues in Lincoln County

We are excited to be joined by Gary Person on today’s show. He’s the president and CEO of the North Platte Area Chamber and Development Corporation. On today’s show, we are going to discuss the proposed North Platte rail park and explore its significance to the community.
The North Platte rail park is currently in the application phase to the Nebraska department of economic development but has a lot of promise for the community and our economy. Rail access in Lincoln County has historically been restricted, but this park could help change that.
Along with opening up rail access, it would bring more diversification to our economy, helping us recruit new industry in North Platte. This project has the potential to have $1.8 billion dollars of economic impact annually and 2,000 jobs. Even half of that is a huge game-changer in our economy and North Platte’s growth.
