Before he was a fixture in a Big Rig, our guest today spent most of his days in the Big Apple. As a kid growing up playing basketball on the streets of Long Island, 6 foot 8 inch Peter Rizzo was often called a “Skyscraper.” He went on to play hoops in college before returning to the City to work as a police officer among the land of skyscrapers. But, within his first few months on the job, two of them came down. When the unthinkable occurred, Peter Rizzo joined his comrades and jumped straight into the fire to do what he could to rescue lives and restore a city. In this special holiday edition of the Six Figure Trucker, we highlight one of our favorite stories of the year that we discovered on this podcast. In the spirit of Christmas, it’s a heartwarming glimpse into the life of one of our drivers who makes an incredible impact on some particular children in the Atlanta area. This driveaway specialist/Good Samaritan is an example to us all. She’s also an example of the drivers we highlight on this show every week. We seek to elevate and celebrate the American Truck Drivers because, quite frankly, they deserve it, and we’re honored to bring their stories to light. So, to every truck driver tuning in, thank you. Thank you for the miles you cover and the sacrifices you make to ensure our holiday seasons are full of cheer and our tables are full of yuletide feasts. We never cease to be amazed at the people we meet within the beautiful business of trucking. The men and women who sit behind the wheel of trucks across this country are impossible to stereotype. Today’s guest is a great example. Shantel Chandler is a 10-year veteran of Driveaway and is a lady who loves the open roads. In the quiet privacy of a cab, she connects with God and relishes the opportunity to experience the various sights, sounds, and cultures of His world. But that’s just on the weekends and summers. You see, throughout the school year, Shantel drives a bus where she does far more than just safely delivering children. It’s more of a mission than a job, as she deeply cares for the kids she transports. In fact, the route she chose is one that regularly picks up children who are homeless. When those kids get on her bus, there’s a McDonald's bag on their seat most mornings - she just has to ensure that her kids aren’t starting their school day on an empty stomach. But that’s not all there is to know about Shantel Chandler. On top of all of this, she’s a world-class chef who runs a thriving catering business and is currently preparing to open her own restaurant. We have no idea how she pulls all of it off, and we’re so pleased to get a few minutes of her valuable time for today’s conversation. Smoke billowed into the cab as Aaron regained his wits and found himself hanging upside down from his seatbelt. The smell of diesel that fueled the rapidly spreading flames also fueled his adrenaline to find some way out of a truck that was seconds away from being his coffin. From sea to shining sea, our All-American truck drivers are privileged to take in the breathtaking beauty of this great land from behind the wheel. But for today's guest, these landscapes are nothing new. What is new is the angle. Before taking his place behind the wheel of a truck, Robert Nebel spent the better part of three decades in a cockpit. As a military pilot, he flew combat missions in Vietnam and then returned to a decorated career as both a pilot and instructor. Then, he traded his fatigues for a suit and a commercial jet with Southwest Airlines, where he flew the friendly skies for fourteen years. Jets, planes, helicopters, you name it, Robert has flown it. And now, in the twilight of his career, he’s brought his supreme navigational skills to the ground and to a truck. We’re back for part two of our fascinating conversation with Robert Nebel as he shares his journey through the air to the world of trucking.

As he looks back, Robert Nebel can see how his upbringing was the perfect training ground for the business of Driveaway. As a kid, he would work in the mom-and-pop grocery store that his parents ran and learned the ethic of hard work and the value of a dollar. At 16, he spent a summer in Germany studying abroad and learned to adapt to a world where no one spoke his language. Then, he joined the military, where he would have a colorful career. Each of these experiences taught him to think on his feet and were masterclass preparations for the open roads of trucking. We’re pleased to welcome Robert Nebel for part one of a two-episode series. After graduating from Penn State University and landing his first big job in Dallas, Rod Twakihikira thought he had made it. Having immigrated to the U.S. from Africa in his teens, he had the grit and the drive. Having graduated from one of the nation’s top 20 Universities, he had the smarts. Having literally modeled underwear for Calvin Klein, he certainly had the looks. Behind his desk, in his swanky new suit, he had all the makings of another African American success story. And he is a success story; make no mistake about it. But not behind a desk and not in a swanky suit. No, he traded all that for a wheel and the open roads. It was a trade that more than tripled his income and secured his freedom. The unbeatable combination of money and time in driveaway has this handsome driver smiling all the way to the bank! A notification pops up on the screen mounted safely on the dashboard in front of you. You can’t quite see who it’s from or make out what it says, so you grab it for a quick glance. I mean, the traffic is light, and it will only take a second. So, you satisfy the urge, but as you go to put it back, it jostles loose from your hand and hits the floorboard. So, you quickly reach down to snag it, all while keeping your eyes on the road, of course. Eventually, your hand locates the phone, and you secure it back in its mount. When this scene played out for today’s guest in real life, the next thing he saw was blue lights. He was pulled over and given a citation for operating a cell phone while driving. DeCorey Hawkins was immediately fired. In a matter of seconds, DeCorey lost his job and faced an uphill climb to make it back in this industry with that stain on his record. Thankfully for him, this citation was eventually dropped, and DeCorey returned to the wheel. But it’s safe to say that he has returned a different man. The violation turned out to be minor, but the lesson proved to be major. Tune in today as we discuss this and more with DeCorey Hawkins along with Norton Transport safety director Renee Dearing on this episode of the #SixFigureTrucker.

Each of us can remember moments when our younger, more immature selves acted in ways we regret. Sometimes the consequences of those actions shadow us for years to come. But some face up to their mistakes and learn from them. They outrun that shadow and rise like stars in the night sky. Our guest today is one of those stars. Galvanized in the school of hard knocks, Abraham Gomez has become a man of tested integrity. He’s learned to prioritize safety, honesty, and responsibility. As a result, his star has already begun to rise in just a short time over the road with Norton. We’re proud to have him on our team and introduce him and a whole lot of wisdom to you on this episode of the #SixFigureTrucker.

Today’s guest saw Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead live in concert when he was sixteen. Chris Woods was hooked. If Franklin Snooks had his way, he’d take in the setting sun from a beach chair rather than through the windshield of a truck. You’d think it might be difficult to trust a guy who swears to have seen an actual ghost on the road. And to be clear, that’s exactly what today’s guest claims. Well, he’s not the kind to be loose with the truth or exaggerate a story. Arnie Teran is one of the most trustworthy drivers we know. After ten years of work in the music business and twilighting as a bartender alongside the likes of Kenny Chesney, our guest today left Nashville for his homeland of Iowa. Do you like to make money?” His answer was, “Yes, yes, and Yes!” The advertisement was from a Georgia-based company called Norton Transport, and as they say, the rest is history. “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” This saying rings true in this space, as successful truckers don’t just wish themselves there. No, Six Figure Truckers are planners. They go hand in hand. But, as it turns out, there is something else that goes hand in hand with good planning. Patience. When a good plan goes up in smoke due to forces outside one’s control, their response is as important as their plan. If “a goal without a plan is just a wish,” a plan without patience is a powder keg. Countless variables in this business of trucking can disrupt a plan, but the key question is this: will they disrupt your peace?

Huddle up! Every fan of the game of Football knows those two words and their importance. In the huddle, reminders are given, a play is called, and game faces are applied. When that huddle breaks, it’s game time! As a former college football player, our guest today is no stranger to a huddle. In fact, he carries the feel of all those huddles with him each day as he slides behind the wheel. When that diesel engine fires, it’s game time, and Eddie Bray knows he must be ready. Whether it’s rush hour in Atlanta, freezing rain outside of Cleveland, or a distracted driver coming into his lane, the challenges are endless on the open roads. Road rage is a problem, and it’s growing. A recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission (NHTSA) found that fatal road rage-related car accidents grew 500% in just nine years between 2006 and 2015. Unfortunately, that number continues to climb. Over 80% of drivers surveyed in 2019 admitted to an outburst of road rage at least once in the previous year. But we’re thankful that our guest today proves to be an exception. Terry Scott has learned the art of keeping cool on highways full of bad drivers and worse attitudes. He is passionate about saying that you can’t get upset about what you can’t control. His mantra is, “You’ve got to join the club.” To find out what he means by that, tune in to today’s episode of the #SixFigureTrucker.

Successful drivers play chess, not checkers. No, we’re not talking about moving little wooden pieces on cardboard. We’re talking about moving trucks all over our beautiful country, and those who do it best have a plan. Long before they slide behind the wheel, the best drivers have been crafting a detailed plan. They know where they’re going and how they’re going to get there. They have a strategy for fuel, food, lodging, and transportation. They’ve factored in time for delays and inspections. Thus, they’re rarely surprised and always on time. They don’t merely show up and react. No, they don’t play checkers. The most successful drivers play chess. They show up with a plan, execute it with precision, and bring home the Queen’s ransom to boot. We’re pleased to have an over-the-road Chessmaster with us on today’s episode.
