We never cease to be amazed at the people we meet within the beautiful business of trucking. The men and women who sit behind the wheel of trucks across this country are impossible to stereotype. Today’s guest is a great example. Shantel Chandler is a 10-year veteran of Driveaway and is a lady who loves the open roads. In the quiet privacy of a cab, she connects with God and relishes the opportunity to experience the various sights, sounds, and cultures of His world. But that’s just on the weekends and summers. You see, throughout the school year, Shantel drives a bus where she does far more than just safely delivering children. It’s more of a mission than a job, as she deeply cares for the kids she transports. In fact, the route she chose is one that regularly picks up children who are homeless. When those kids get on her bus, there’s a McDonald's bag on their seat most mornings - she just has to ensure that her kids aren’t starting their school day on an empty stomach. But that’s not all there is to know about Shantel Chandler. On top of all of this, she’s a world-class chef who runs a thriving catering business and is currently preparing to open her own restaurant. We have no idea how she pulls all of it off, and we’re so pleased to get a few minutes of her valuable time for today’s conversation. Prepare to be inspired as you listen to this episode of the #SixFigureTrucker.

From sea to shining sea, our All-American truck drivers are privileged to take in the breathtaking beauty of this great land from behind the wheel. But for today's guest, these landscapes are nothing new. What is new is the angle. Before taking his place behind the wheel of a truck, Robert Nebel spent the better part of three decades in a cockpit. Then, he traded his fatigues for a suit and a commercial jet with Southwest Airlines, where he flew the friendly skies for fourteen years. Jets, planes, helicopters, you name it, Robert has flown it. As he looks back, Robert Nebel can see how his upbringing was the perfect training ground for the business of Driveaway. As a kid, he would work in the mom-and-pop grocery store that his parents ran and learned the ethic of hard work and the value of a dollar. At 16, he spent a summer in Germany studying abroad and learned to adapt to a world where no one spoke his language. Then, he joined the military, where he would have a colorful career. Each of these experiences taught him to think on his feet and were masterclass preparations for the open roads of trucking. We’re pleased to welcome Robert Nebel for part one of a two-episode series. At 76 years young, Robert brings a host of experiences and stories along with a wealth of wisdom on this episode of the #SixFigureTrucker.

A notification pops up on the screen mounted safely on the dashboard in front of you. You can’t quite see who it’s from or make out what it says, so you grab it for a quick glance. I mean, the traffic is light, and it will only take a second. So, you satisfy the urge, but as you go to put it back, it jostles loose from your hand and hits the floorboard. So, you quickly reach down to snag it, all while keeping your eyes on the road, of course. Eventually, your hand locates the phone, and you secure it back in its mount. When this scene played out for today’s guest in real life, the next thing he saw was blue lights. He was pulled over and given a citation for operating a cell phone while driving. DeCorey Hawkins was immediately fired. In a matter of seconds, DeCorey lost his job and faced an uphill climb to make it back in this industry with that stain on his record. Thankfully for him, this citation was eventually dropped, and DeCorey returned to the wheel. But it’s safe to say that he has returned a different man. Though we unashamedly extoll the life-changing opportunities within driveaway trucking on this podcast, we also seek to reflect on the challenges that surface in this industry. For example, there is always the potential for obstacles like inclement weather or mechanical breakdowns over the road. The driver’s response to issues like these will make or break them. “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” This saying rings true in this space, as successful truckers don’t just wish themselves there. No, Six Figure Truckers are planners. They go hand in hand. But, as it turns out, there is something else that goes hand in hand with good planning. Patience. When a good plan goes up in smoke due to forces outside one’s control, their response is as important as their plan. If “a goal without a plan is just a wish,” a plan without patience is a powder keg. Countless variables in this business of trucking can disrupt a plan, but the key question is this: will they disrupt your peace?

We’re thrilled to welcome a driver today who has learned to roll with the punches and maintain his poise. It’s a poise that is most evident in how he treats others. Abdur Martin is kind. Moreover, he’s an ambassador for kindness and someone we can all learn from. Don’t miss a minute of our conversation with Abdur Martin on today’s episode of the #SixFigureTrucker.

Road rage is a problem, and it’s growing. A recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission (NHTSA) found that fatal road rage-related car accidents grew 500% in just nine years between 2006 and 2015. Successful drivers play chess, not checkers. No, we’re not talking about moving little wooden pieces on cardboard. We’re talking about moving trucks all over our beautiful country, and those who do it best have a plan. Long before they slide behind the wheel, the best drivers have been crafting a detailed plan. They know where they’re going and how they’re going to get there. They have a strategy for fuel, food, lodging, and transportation. They’ve factored in time for delays and inspections. Thus, they’re rarely surprised and always on time. They don’t merely show up and react. No, they don’t play checkers. The most successful drivers play chess. They show up with a plan, execute it with precision, and bring home the Queen’s ransom to boot. We’re pleased to have an over-the-road Chessmaster with us on today’s episode. “You are driving the wrong truck!” No truck driver ever wants to hear those chilling words. That’s the stuff of nightmares. But, our guest today wasn’t dreaming when he heard that line from a dispatcher, and he was already 800 miles down a snow-covered highway.
