Ali Shakoor is a smart guy when it comes to walleyes. He’s been studying these fish on Lake Erie for a while, and has been digging into the effects of blue-green algae bloom on walleyes in Lake Erie. He joins the show this week and updates us on that research, and other science behind walleyes.
We also ask Ali what he thinks about the new regulations on Red Lake and whether he think it makes sense. He gives us his educated opinion and talks about slot limits on walleyes in this area.
He hits on catch and keep fishing tournaments and what he thinks about catch and release fishing tournaments. He’s fished a few, so he shares what he’s found from both of those tournaments and if he thinks catch and release tournaments will ever be the future of all fishing tournaments. Ali mentions what he thinks about whether anglers keeping big walleyes really makes a difference in a fishery, and how Lake Erie and other lakes are different, but the fish can be strikingly similar.

Then we’ll meet the winners of the Rainy River 500 tournament. Jonathan Narverud joins first to talk about the sucker he caught which won the other fish category. Supposedly it was pushing state records…
Chris Novak and Eric Solo join to talk about tying for 2nd place in the sturgeon category. They talk about what they were doing to catch big sturgeon. Nathan Vleck is the sturgeon champ and he wraps up the segment talking about his winning fish and a tagged sturgeon he caught recently.
Finally we meet the walleye category winners. Ryan Rondeau talks about the two big walleyes he entered and the even bigger walleye he caught before tournament hours started. Sabra LeBrasseur tells us about her 2nd place walleye she caught with Joe and Greg, and unfortunately our walleye winner had to take off early.

Rylan Parrott is dialed in on big fish, whether it’s lake trout at Tazin Lake or Pike in other parts of Canada. He caught an insane amount of Northern Pike over 40″ this winter. He did it wearing some crazy outfits while sitting on a couch he found in the city and had a sunken car in his background. Sounds made up right? He has video of the whole thing.
Rylan also talks about his first season at Tazin Lake Lodge. He tells the story of the biggest lake trout he boated, how he got a nose bleed when he caught his first giant laker, and how he can’t wait to get back there this year.

Sam Soholt is our first guest, and he talks about what the beginning of turkey season will look like with all of the snow on the ground and the cold weather. He has some tips for hunters who have tags and plans to hunt the first few weeks of the season, regardless of what state they’re in.

We’ve seen some states put caps, quotas and other restrictions to non-resident hunting licenses more in recent years. The gang discusses possible reasons to why these changes are made and if it will lead to a better or worse future for our hunting. The guys start off the show talking about the new Manitoba waterfowl regulations regarding non-resident licenses. Bret tells us what the deal is and how it’s not as bad as people initially thought. He also shares some info that one of our sources told us that most news outlets aren’t reporting, and it’s good news for non-resident waterfowlers.
Geremy Olson is and has been working hard on North Dakota HB 1538, which would lead to some North Dakota fishing tournament changes. He tells us the negative sides of the way fishing tournaments are right now and how it affects charities, fire departments, local economies and tournament organizations.
He tells us what we can do to have our voice heard on this topic (no matter what side anyone is on) and how voices are actually heard.

Joe Henry joins the show first to give us some tips on ice fishing at Lake of the Woods. Now that there’s fishable ice, anglers are hitting it in full force and Joe has some advice on how to work walleyes, especially if they seem to be in a negative mood. He shares how you shouldn’t be afraid to work your bait off bottom in some instances and how fish have the tendency to enjoy the chase, but there’s also another technique that shouldn’t ever be overlooked at the Walleye Capital of the World.
Then we continue our conversation with Thomas Hoke. If you missed the first part of this interview, be sure to listen to last week’s show to get caught up. Thomas runs the YouTube channel Hoke Outdoors. He talks about his kayak hunting experience here in Minnesota and tells us about some of his hunting experiences in North Carolina. Bret and Thomas compare waterfowl hunting regulations in the Mississippi and Central Flyways to the Atlantic Flyway and ponder why certain regulations are the way they are. Joe Henry from Lake of the Woods Tourism joins the show once again to tell us about getting to the Northwest Angle to ice fish this winter. Thankfully the Canadian border is open again after a few years of changing rules and regulations, so driving up that way is an option, but there’s also a few other ways to get north to your favorite Northwest Angle resort. Joe explains the various ways to get there and why the Northwest Angle is a place to check out this winter.
Then Thomas Hoke joins us in studio for the first part of his two-part interview. Thomas is from Virginia, but is working for Cory Loeffler and DRC Calls. He talks about hunting in Minnesota compared to Virginia and some of the cool things he’s filmed. He also tells us about his YouTube channel. He shares why he started it and what people can expect to see there.

He stresses the fact that once your hearing is gone it won’t ever come back, and ultimately the price for good hearing protection is no different than buying decoys or a new trailer, and is more important.
Art is also a talented waterfowl photographer. He and Bret nerd out for a bit talking about the nuances and challenges of taking pictures of ducks and geese in the field and why they like it so much. They also talk about the changes of duck and goose patterns in Minnesota and South Dakota.
Then we check in with Joe Henry before wrapping up the show to get an update on the progress of the ice at Lake of the Woods. He tells us some guys are getting out. Are they on the big lake yet?
