Along with his wife, Bonnie (also a 4th generation homesteader) and their son Brian Jr., Brian has been actively homesteading on a 2 acre piece of land since 2008. 2023 has been a season of change on our homestead. Some of that has been planned. So of it, not so much. On this final episode of season 4, I share with you some of those changes and some lessons I've learned. I also share with you my vision for season 5.

This week I spent a lot of time reading the policy manuals of the Farm Bureau and the NY Farm Bureau. As I did, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about how homesteading and farming are the same. And how they are different. On this episode, I share my thoughts on that as well as why I think homesteading is crucial to solving the issue of aging farmers.

Back in May at the Southern Adirondack Homesteading Festival, I was introduced to Natalie, the manager of our local region for the NY Farm Bureau. We became friends. She has been trying to convince me to join the organization, but I wasn't convinced that it would be a good fit. While their mission is advocacy and education relating to agricultural issues, I didn't think they would care about the issues and concerns that homesteaders face. As I shared some of those concerns with Natalie, she said to me, "Brian, NYFB cannot advocate for problems they don't know exist. They can't provide education in areas they are unaware that people are struggling with." Well, what changed? And why did I finally join NYFB? Listen and find out.

This year my garden has sucked. Worst. Garden. Ever. It's been one of those gardening seasons that could make you want to quit gardening. Forever.

But, instead, I'm trying to learn some lessons. Some lessons that I hope will help me be successful in years to come. Hopefully it will inspire you to keep gardening even if things haven't gone well for you either.

This week, we sent our last remaining American Guinea Hogs off to their new home in Michigan . It is a bittersweet day for us. And while a lot of thought went into making this decision, it is very easy to second guess "quitting" something. And, so on this episode I remind you (and myself) that it is ok to quit things. In fact, sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves is to move onto something else.

On this episode, I discuss 5 reasons why we might want to quit things:

  1. You don't like it.
  2. You don't need it.
  3. You don't want to do it.
  4. You can't do it.
  5. You want to do something else.

Quitting doesn't have to be forever. sometimes it's "not now, but maybe later......" Whether it's a permanent quit or it's just a pause, it's ok to quit things, to shift gears, to do something else. It may feel uncomfortable. It may affect your how your perception of yourself. It might affect how others perceive you. But, it's STILL ok to quit things. Don't be afraid to be a quitter.

As I have been anticipating 3B Farm becoming 2B Farm as Brian Jr. heads off to college, it's left me with a bit of an identity crisis. For the last 18+ years of my life, my primary focus has been on trying to be a present dad. Now, my role as dad is about to change. The day after I released Episode 156, (Be A Helpful Homesteader), I ran across a Facebook post that got me to thinking about the topic in a slightly different manner. Yes, sometimes people are harsh when replying to people's questions or problems. We've all seen that. But, I think we've also seen people get upset and offended because someone dared tell them the truth. And sometimes, well, the truth hurts. And so on this episode I talk about the importance of being teachable. Even when it hurts. Even when people are jerks.

While scrolling through some of the Facebook homesteading groups, I saw over and over again people starting their post by saying, "Please be kind" or "Please don't judge me". It's sad to me that people feel the need to start out their post that way. And so, today's episode is really all about being kind, remember that we too, at one point didn't know the things, and that it really isn't hard to be kind to others. (And when all else fails, we can just scroll on by!!)

This week, I ran across the story of Paul Strobel, a farmer in Western NY who had a run-in with some animal rights activists that left him shaken and worried that they might try to steal his livestock.

His story reminded me of a farmer near me several years ago name Joshua Rockwood who did have his animals taken under the guise of animal rights. He was able to fight and get his animals returned to him.

On this episode, we talk about how we as homesteaders should be vigilant and how we can take steps to avoid problems with animal rights activists.

This time of the year, I see many people asking questions similar to this: I'm in zone xyz, is it too soon to plant beans outside? On this episode we talk about what USDA hardiness zones or growing zones are and why I don't think they matter at all to "regular" vegetable gardens. We talk about instead why instead last and first average frost dates, the length between those dates (known as the growing season) and ambient air and soil temperatures are FAR better indicators as to when you should start that veggie garden. For awhile, I really struggled with whether or not we could follow the Mediterranean Diet and still be homesteaders. After all, we don't live in the Mediterranean. And there are a lot of common ingredients to the Mediterranean Diet, that we cannot grow here in upstate NY.
A. We can't produce olive oil
B. We are 100s of miles away from the ocean and fresh seafood
C. We can't grow citrus, artichokes, olives, capers, figs and pomegranates, all things found in many Mediterranean diet dishes.
D. Because we have smaller acreage, we can't grow lots of whole grains or nuts.

But, eventually I realized that I was focused on the wrong things. Instead of being focused on what I COULD do, I was focused on what I COULDN'T do.
A. I can grow LOTS of vegetables.
B. I can grow LOTS of herbs.
C. I can raise a lot of meat.
D. Even Ma and Pa Ingalls bought stuff at the store.
E. The principles of the Mediterranean Diet are universal.

We arrived home yesterday from our vacation. And I found a very weedy garden waiting for me. At first I was very frustrated and upset over that. I felt inept as a gardener, a failure as a homesteader, a fraud as a homesteading content creator. But, then I remembered WHY the garden has weeds. And that change in perspective caused me to see the weeds in a way I never have.

Because I primarily garden in raised beds that are about 10 to 12 inches deep until a couple of years ago, I had only tried growing potatoes once. A big part of the reason why I didn't try growing potatoes is because I thought you need a depth and a quality of soil that I don't have. Another part of the reason why I didn't grow potatoes is because I had only seen them grown in the very labor intensive "dig a ditch" and then "hill the crap" out of them before playing hide and go seek with the potatoes with a potato fork.

But, then I discovered the Ruth Stout method which I've used for the past 2 years. And this year I'm trying 2 more methods that are supposed to be much less work while still producing a good harvest.

And so I fully expect that this will end up being the least downloaded episode ever on this podcast. But, I think it is so important that we talk about death. This week I ran across an article entitled: Meet the Appalachian Apple Hunter Who Rescued 1,000 ‘Lost’ Varieties

It is the story of a retired chemical engineer named Tom Brown who since 2001 has been searching for and "rescuing" apple varieties from the Appalachians. He actually stumbled across this "hobby" by visiting a farmer's marked in 1998 where he found a little stand filled with what he refers to as "strange looking apples." And through this "hobby", he has been able to save over 1,000 apple varieties that may have been lost forever.

As I read the article and then had subsequent conversations with people, it got me to thinking that while most of us will never save 1,000 apple varieties, as homesteaders we can do something It may be helping to save a particular breed of animal, or cultivating a variety of vegetable year after year passing the seeds on to subsequent generation, or passing on a skill; but all of us can do something.

Sometimes we have a dream. It's something that you seemingly can't shake. It can start to consume you. You share it with other people. Instead of thinking you're crazy, they see the vision. And they buy into it. And it starts to consume them. And then it doesn't work out.

That can be soul crushing. It can be demoralizing. And I think many, many homesteaders have been there. They found the perfect piece of property. They dream of all of the things they could do on that land. And then for whatever reason, it doesn't work out.

That happened to us recently. And so I share with you our experience. And the fact that it's all good. Maybe it's not the right place. Maybe it's not the right vision. Or maybe right now, well, it's not the right time. But, it's all good. It's all good.

On today's episode we talk about All-American canners. I have two (a 921 and a 930). On this episode I give my thoughts on both of them.

I also mention Mirro and Presto canners. It is my opinion, that if you go that route, you should upgrade the "jiggler" from the generic one to one that can be set to different lbs of pressure. Here is the Presto version.

A couple of weeks ago I ran into a friend from church. I don't think I had seen him since before the pandemic and if I had, it hadn't been for long. As we stood there catching up, he was asking me about some of the the things we had been doing on the farm that he had seen on Facebook. And then he asked me this question; "Brian, how do you get it all done????" And then, I had to share with him my dirty little secret..... I don't.

Many times it is easy for us to get either an incomplete or fully wrong perspective of someone else's life. And then we measure ourselves against a measuring stick that isn't realistic or may be flat out wrong. The Bible tells us that those who measure themselves among themselves are not wise. How true that is.

And so this episode is just a reminder for you to focus on living out your journey. Don't compare yourself to other people. And if you feel tempted to compare yourself to me and think that you're not doing enough, just remind yourself of my dirty little secret, "I'm not getting it all done either." And it's all good.

This week I spent camping with my son's Boy Scout troop. While there, I was able to dive into Cathy R. Payne's book, Saving the Guinea Hogs. As I was reading the book, I was struck by the fact that the policies that lead to the near extinction of the American Guinea Hog were also responsible for the near extinction of homestead community. This week, leading up to the Fourth of July, I was thinking about perhaps the most famous words from our Declaration of Independence. "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." I think for many people in 2020 homesteading epitomized those words.

I think there were a lot of people who woke up in 2020 to the fact that our food system is very, very fragile, that our political system is an absolute mess and that when it all boils down to it, we need to take greater responsibility for our Life. And our Liberty and our Pursuit of Happiness. And I think for some people, they saw in homesteading a way to live that out. And so that is our topic of conversation on this episode.

This week was absolutely a crazy week on the homestead. Between a trip to PA to attend a family reunion, my parent's 45th wedding anniversary and a visit from my brother and sister in law and their family, I really didn't have much time for homesteading stuff. Instead, I tried to be in the moment, spending as much time as I possibly could with them. This FMF is my challenge to you attempt to find balance in life, EVEN IF that means allowing the homestead to take a backseat to other, more important things.

If you're new to all of this, you may want to start with the more standard fruit based jams and jellies (and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. They taste GREAT!!) But, if you've done that, then I urge you to try something unique. You might just like it.

A lot of times, as we think about being a homesteader, we think about the short term.

We think about raising and growing food. We think about preserving food. We think about raising animals and putting meat in the freezer and that's certainly important, but many times I think we lose sight of the fact that what we are doing is far more important than just putting food on the table or food in the freezer. We are building a legacy.

On this episode I share some of my memories of my legacy. And encourage you to keep up the good work, as you too, are leaving a legacy behind.

Many people would like to start canning but they aren't sure where or how to get started. Making jams and jellies is an easy way try it out. You can get started in many cases with things you already having in your kitchen (you'll need to buy jelly jars/lids/rings). But, if you have a stock pot, you have all you need to get started.

Most jelly/jam recipes are very easy. They generally require three ingredients; fruit, sugar and pectin. My advice is to buy a box of Sure Jell pectin and follow the recipe to a "T". It may seem likes its a lot of sugar. Just go with it. (Or buy the low sugar variety. But, i'd still recommend new people start with the regular Sure Jell). You can can. Making jams and jellies is kind of like getting chickens; its the gateway drug to food preservation.

If you are considering relocation (in particular from an urban area to a rural area) there are 7 things you NEED to know to ensure you have success.

  1. You ARE an outsider
  2. No one cares about how great where you came from is
  3. Leave the city in the city
  4. You don't know as much as you think you do
  5. There are local customs, foods, celebrations and mannerisms. Embrace them.
  6. Change comes slowly (if at all)
  7. No one expects you to stick around.

Certainly this episode could be construed as a bit more negative than what I usually publish. But, I hope you find it helpful.

Don't ever give up.

These are things that we are told from a young age. But, sometimes the best thing we can do is be a quitter. I'm not talking about just turning tail and running when adversity comes. We are certainly going to face adversity on the homestead. But, there are some times when quitting is the best thing we can do for our homestead journey. This week I learned of a ballot initiative in Colorado called PAUSE, "Protect Animals from Unnecessary Suffering and Exploitation". That sounds like a good thing, until you read the text (click here to do so). What you find is that it criminalizes normal homesteading practices with regards to raising animals and it places onerous burdens on the raising of livestock for meat. Activists are attempting to get a similar ballot initiative on the ballot in Oregon (you can read about that here.)

But, homesteading is also under attack indirectly. There is a proposed law in California that specifically targets small engines which are used primarily in lawn and garden equipment. And the NY state legislature just passed a bill which is headed to the governor for signature that will mandate that by 2035 ALL vehicles sold in New York be electric, making it much more difficult for people to live in rural areas.

Homesteading is also under attack through recent influxes of people leaving city life for the country due to COVID. These individuals don't understand farming practices and seek to use ordinances to restrict what people can/cannot do on their land.

For many people lately, "keep politics out of homesteading" has been a mantra. And I understand why. Juvenile, petty name calling has become the norm. Blaming the "other side" is a common occurance.

Perhaps both Democrats and Republicans would be better served to acknowledge that their "team" has contributed to the situation in which we find ourselves. And we certainly need to have people start acting like adults again. We MUST find some civility and find a way to have difficult conversations about difficult topics. As homesteaders, we need to have each other's back. And we need to remember that while we may not live in Colorado or Oregon, our state might be the next one to adopt a resolution that would criminalized our way of life. We no longer have the luxury of leaving the politics out of homesteading!!!

We have about 28 currently and I feel like we’ve put so much money into these things. I thought this was going to be cheaper than buying store bought meat... I was very very wrong"

On this episode, I am happy to be joined by Farmer Greg Peterson from theurbanfarm.org and host of The Urban Farm Podcast. Greg is a green living and sustainability innovator whose mission is to inspire people to embrace their own greenness, which he does daily by living what he speaks. As a resident of Phoenix for the last 48 years, Greg is well-versed in urban sustainability and food production in dry lands. He was first introduced to desert gardening at the age of 12. In 1991, he discovered the concept of permaculture, bringing together many sustainability concepts into one cohesive system. Then in 2001, Greg created a new concept called the Urban Farm, a real world environmental showcase home in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona. He applied his extensive background to transform this 1950’s built tract home into an innovative holistic home site. The Urban Farm, featuring an entirely edible landscape, including over 70 fruit trees, rainwater and greywater harvesting, three solar applications, and extensive use of reclaimed and recycled building materials. Greg has hosted the Urban Farm Podcast since 2015 and has produced almost 600 episodes, interviewing farmers, authors, business leaders, advocates, and changemakers in sustainable living practices and urban farmer. Guests have included Jason Mraz, Joel Salatin and David Holmgren to name just a few. When I was talking with Greg and his team about coming on the show, there were so many topics that I wanted to discuss with him. But, today's show will be focused on permaculture and food forests.

On this week's episode we head back to the garden to talk about hybrids varieties of vegetables. Many times, in homesteading and gardening circles, hybrids get a bad rap. People love their heirlooms and open pollinated varieties (and so do I) and treat "hybrid" like it's a dirty word.

Now, certainly hybrids at times have fairly earned a reputation as not being very tasty. And I understand why some people have an issue with them with regards to seed patents. But, not all hybrids have patents on them. And don't believe the hooey when people tell you that hybrids are "basically GMOs".

On this episode we jump into what hybrids are (and are not). We talk about their benefits. And I share with you why I grow a mixture of heirloom and hybrids in my garden.

Currently lumber prices are through the roof. A friend I work with told me the other day that the trusses that she had ordered last year for $8,000 (and then had to cancel) were going to cost her $24,000 this year. If you go to Lowes (or Home Depot or your local lumber yard) you'll find that 2x4's that used to cost $2 or $3 are going for $6 or $7 each. Plywood that used to cost $15 now costs over $30 each. So, as we head into springtime when many homesteaders are looking to make improvements or add animals (and thus need to build shelters), what can and should we do?

This is the fourth and final episode in our three part series on starting seeds. When I started this series, my plan was to only do three episodes: one on What to start, when to start, how much to start. The second would cover 6 basic things needed for seed starting. And finally I planned to wrap up the series by talking about how we start seeds on 3B Farm and Homestead. But, this week as I was scrolling through some of the Homesteading and Gardening groups on Facebook, I saw many people asking what "hardening off" seedlings meant and how to do it. And I got to thinking. No series on seed starting is complete without a discussion of this process. Because you can have all of the right gear; you can do everything right; you can have beautiful seedlings but if you don't harden them off properly, 9.9 times out of 10, they will die and you will have wasted all of that time, effort and energy. In fact, the 2 most common mistakes I see people who are new to seed starting make is they don't have the lights close enough to their plants and end up with leggy seedlings. And they don't harden the seedlings off properly and end up with dead plants.

So, on this episode we talk about what it means to harden of seedlings, when to start it and how we do it here on 3B Farm and Homestead.

It's that time of the year; the time when we turn our attention to the spring and we think about getting our gardens started. For some of us, that means starting some seeds indoors. Maybe you are new to gardening and you're confused as to what should be started indoors, what should be direct sown, and what can go either way. Maybe you're unsure of what varieties you should grow (after all, if you've been buying your transplants, there are usually only a handful of varieties to choose from. When you start from seeds, it seems like there are 100s!!) Maybe you're not sure of when you should start your seeds or how many you should start. This show and this series is for you!!

I am calling this episode "don't forget the perennials" Now, the idea for this episode came from a conversation I had last Sunday evening with the father, his name is James, of one of the scouts in my son's troop. You may recall that I recorded last week's episode on Saturday because we were planning on going tubing with the scouts at the mountain where my son and I work. While the scouts continued to tube, I went into the lodge to have a cup of hot chocolate to warm up and Jim and I got to talking. Jim is an avid gardener and food preserver. I'm not sure if he'd consider himself a homesteader. I've never asked him. But, as we started talking one thing led to another and we got onto the topic of perennials and I thought, "I've got to talk about this on the podcast!"

But, in part this is also a follow on to last week's episode on sustainability. And in part, this is an addition to my series on gardening. Time of the year when homesteaders and gardeners are anxious to get their fingers in some dirt. People down south may have already started seeds in greenhouses. Maybe you've even direct sown a few things. Those of us up north are a still a ways out from that. Unless you have special equipment like high tunnels. Where I live, most people put their gardens in on Memorial Day weekend. Officially last average frost date is mid-May and so many people just wait until Memorial Day weekend to plant the bulk of their gardens.

This is the time of the year when many content creators, podcasters and Youtubers are putting out garden related content. Where/when/how to buy seeds. When/where/how to start seeds. All of that great garden content. But, what ends up getting lost in some of that are the perennials. And that is something that I am VERY guilty of. In fact, if you go back to E43 where I share 6 of my biggest regrets in homesteading, is that I waited so long to introduce perennials to our homestead.

So, today we are going to talk perennials, what they are, why you want to include them, some reasons why sometimes they get skipped, and finally some of the perennials I am excited about trying this year:

Sustainability is a word that can mean many things. But, many times when people use the term, they use it as a synonym for environmentally friendly. In my opinion, that's a very narrow view of the word.

Google defines sustaininabilty as:
* the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level.
* avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.

Because people have a tendency to look at sustainability primarily from an environmentla perspective, the first part of the definition, "the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level" gets lost.

I admittedly approach this from a bit of a prepper point of view. While I don't have bunkers filled with guns, ammo and MRE's, when I think about sustainability on my homestead, I am thinking about worst case scenarios: What if the proverbial poop hits the fan. Do I have systems in place where I could maintain our life at a meaningful level?

On this episode, I talk about that as well as sustainability from an environmental perspective. We talk about some ways that you can build sustainability into your homestead journey.

What a crazy week this has been. We are a little over a week into 2021 and I think some of us are already starting the countdown to 2022. For those of you listening to this podcast in the future, I am recording this the Sunday after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in DC. This week also had some Senate runoffs in Georgia to determine control of the next congress. We are still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and it seems that the vaccine roll-outs are not going as smoothly as people had hoped.

Of course, the debate on the social media platforms has been VERY intense, more intense than I recall previously. Because of what took place with Trump's supporters, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have banned him from their platforms. Google and Apple have removed the Parler app from the app store. And now we have people threatening to leave Facebook and Twitter for Parler and Mewe and I'm not even sure what other options there are out there.

Quite honestly, the chaos of this week, in particular on social media, has really caused me to reflect on my usage up to this point and what my usage my look like going forward. And while politics has a lot to do with it, certainly Youtube and Facebook in particular over the last several years have become increasingly hostile towards certain types of homesteading content which causes me to further rethink the role of social media in my life.

And so today's episode is going to be really more of my talking out loud as I try to determine my path forward. Honestly, I have more questions than answers and certainly no conclusions will be made at the end of this episode. But, I am sure that I am not the only one who is wrestling with this. So, let's wrestle with it together.

This is the time of the year when people are setting goals. Personal, professional and if you're into homesteading, setting goals for your homestead. All of that is great. As I reflect back on my goals for 2020, I will tell you that some of the things I had planned didn't get done. Life had other plans. Now, I certainly think that goals are great. But, flexibility is also key. Sometimes life happens. Sometimes we need to pivot. And that is ok.

But, sometimes we fail at meeting our goals because we set ourselves up for failure right from the get go. There are a number of reasons why that happens. Sometimes we try to tackle too many things at a time. Sometimes we tackle things that maybe we're just not ready for; we try to run before we know how to walk. And really the list could go on and on.

But, on today's episode I don't want to focus on the negative. Rather, I want to talk about a well known goal setting framework used by successful businesses such as Walmart called SMART goals. This is a system that has been around since the 1980's and if you have spent any time at all in business, you probably are familiar with it. It is a mnemonic that does have many different variations regarding meaning but usually it is something along the lines of Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound. On this episode we talk about how that framework can set you up to have the BEST homestead year EVER.

In my 43 years of living on God's green earth, I am sure I have received thousands of gifts. Some have been large and some have been small. Some have been expensive and some have not cost a lot of money. But, there is one gift in particular that has meant more than any gift I have ever received. It wasn't large. It wasn't expensive. But, I cherish like I no other.

I am a procrastinator. I'll be the first to admit that I sometimes have a really bad habit of avoiding chores that I don't enjoy doing. This week, I had that come back to bite me in the butt, BIG time. Actually, in three different ways. And so, this week, I was all prepared to talk about procrastination in light of the old adage, "Never put off until tomorrow, that which you can do today."

But, then on Friday, a conversation with my son resulted in me procrastinating (in a good way) something I had planned for Saturday. And I got to thinking. Maybe the adage should be, "Never put off until tomorrow, that which you SHOULD do today."

On this episode I am privileged to be joined by Troy McClung from the Pastured Pig Podcast (You may remember that I was honored to be a guest on that show a couple of weeks ago) and from The Red Toolhouse Youtube channel. Troy is a wealth of homesteading knowledge. In particular, he focuses on pastured pigs and timber management (something I don't think any other homesteading YouTube channel does at all let alone as well as Troy does it.) Along with his wife Kelly (who should be nominated for sainthood) and their two sons, they have been building a homestead on the hills and hollers of West Virginia (NOT to be confused with Western Virginia). When it is processing time and I post pictures on Facebook or Instagram, one of the things I hear a lot from people is, "I don't know how you can raise animals and then eat them." I see many homesteaders in groups who struggle with the emotions that come from processing animals or losing animals to disease or natural causes.

I have shared with you before some of the emotions that I struggle with. I have told you how it bothers me when I drop animals off to be processed, and how in part that is because I want to be the one to do the deed. I have told you how it bothers me when I dispatch rabbits and chickens and pigs on the homestead. I have also shared with you my firm resolution that the day it no longer bothers me is the day I get rid of my animals.

Unfortunately, sometimes other homesteaders on some of the groups and forums are less than supportive as we deal with these emotions. Sometime we face the wrath of vegans/vegetarians who try to guilt us into not eating meat any longer. Old timers who think we are a wusses for caring. Or those who have belittled us for taking animals to be processed and not doing it ourselves.

I have also seen others who maybe lost an animal to mistake or disease or something else be taken to the woodshed as they wrestled with trying to figure out what went wrong and what they a could do differently. Certainly none of that is helpful when dealing with death on the homestead. So, today's episode is a (hopefully) judgement free zone on how I deal with death on the homestead. Hopefully, this will help you as well.

One of the most common questions I am seeing in the Facebook groups and, homesteading forums goes like this. "Help. I just closed on my new homestead. Where do I start?" Now. Let me first start by saying this. It is natural and normal to feel a bit overwhelmed at this point. You've had these dreams of having a homestead and these dreams are starting to become realized, and reality sets in. And quite frankly, I don't think it matters whether or not you're brand new to homesteading or you're an experienced homesteader, relocating to another piece of property, starting a homestead from scratch can be overwhelming.

My first piece of advice is simply this. Take a deep breath. Homesteading is a marathon. It is not a sprint. And the temptation is going to be there. To try to do too much. You want to raise all the things you want to grow, all the things you want to do, all the things. But take a deep breath. Physically and figuratively, but take a deep breath. Do not try to do too much.

But, after that, every homestead journey is going to look different. There is no cookie cutter 5 steps to starting a homestead plan.

So, on this episode we talk about some of the reasons why there is no such thing but also some of the things that maybe every homesteader should think about when getting started.

There is no question that we currently live in a very polarized society. We are polarized politically and culturally. Throw in the COVID-19 pandemic and a contentious presidential election and it feels like things are almost at a boiling point. Relationships with both friends and family are being fractured as a result. On Friday afternoon, I witnessed a motorcycle accident as I was getting ready to pull out of my driveway, returning to work after my lunch break. What I witnessed in the aftermath is that none of that stuff mattered. People didn't care whether or not the rider was Democrat or Republican or Libertarian or Independent. People didn't care whether he was pro-Trump or pro-Biden. No one cared about his positions on hot button topics such as abortion, guns, drugs, or war. None of that mattered. People saw a human being in need and rallied to fight for his life. These are my reflections as I have been processing this over the weekend.

I also share with you the exciting trip we took to pickup our newest boar, Boris. Trust me when I tell you that getting him loaded into the trailer was a ADVENTURE.

There’s part of me that feels guilty that I’m not a four season gardener. Honestly, I’m not sure that I’m anything more than a summer gardener. But, I’m starting to be ok with that.

This year I started feeling the pressure to be a multi season gardener. In part, I think it was the pandemic. I had this incredible urge to grow as much food as possible. To grow as if our lives depended on it. Because, well, maybe they did.

I also felt pressure to be a multi-season gardener because I saw a lot of other people doing it. People planting spring gardens and then summer gardens and then fall gardens. But, as the frost hit this weekend, instead of feeling sadness, I honestly felt a sense of relief. I realized something; I’m ready for gardening to be over. I’m done with shutting off canners at 2 AM. I’m sick of having a table of semi-ripe tomatoes in the back window. I’m done with tripping over canners and rings and such. I’m done. Until the spring.

One of the positive things from COVID is that people are waking up to the fact that the system is broken. Now, some of us have been waking up to that fact for awhile. That certainly doesn’t make us smarter/wiser/etc. All of us come from different backgrounds with different life experiences and perspectives. The fact is, sometimes you cannot see a problem until you are directly impacted. And this year, for the first time ever, many people were confronted by the brokenness of the system.

So, why do I say that is a good thing? Well, the old adage is "The first step to solving a problem is to acknowledging that there IS a problem."In 2020, many of us have taken that first step to admit that there is a problem; the system is broken.

On this episode we talk about ways the system is broken and how that relates to homesteading. And we talk about steps that we can take as homesteaders to be a part of the solution.

I also give you a dose of sheer honesty: this week, I struggled with motivation here on the homestead. I was (and maybe still am) in a funk. But, we got through it and I share with you what I was able to get accomplished on the homestead.

On this episode I chat with Jack and Jackie from The Mindful Homestead Youtube channel about their journey into homesteading. They recently made a HUGE step in the journey as Jack changed careers as a result of having a better quality of life that is more conducive to homesteading. Sometimes we get so focused on the tasks at hand; weeding, harvesting, preserving or we are so focused on planning for the next season, that we neglect to note the things that have gone well or haven’t gone well, the lessons that we have learned so that we can set ourselves up for success the following year’s season. And, if we aren’t careful, we will find ourselves repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

On today's episode we talk about 10 areas of observation I think can help us be even more successful as gardeners. Now, I'll admit, this is a growing edge for me. I am not someone who ever has had much luck keeping a journal or a diary. But, I am finding some success with Google's Keep Notes. If you've struggled with journaling like I have, I'd recommend you download the app and give it a try.

This coming week would have been our county fair. Like so many county fairs across the country, it has been cancelled due to COVID-19. You have no idea how bummed that makes me feel. I absolutely LOVE our fair. I love the sights, the sounds, the smells, the exhibits, the shows, the demolition derby, and of course, the food!!! Alas, this year, it's not to be.

But, on this episode I share with you some of the reasons why we participate in our fair and why I think you might want to consider participating in yours, even if it's not going to be until 2021. Some of the reasons I think homesteaders should consider taking part are:

  • Good for kids: responsibility, affirmation, learn more about their animals, etc.
  • Great way to connect with other like minded people
  • Great way to introduce others to the lifestyle (or at least components of the lifestyle) and educate people on why raising your own food is a good thing
  • Validation
  • Fun
  • Great way to advertise if you are selling meat, veggies, etc.

As I was thinking about this episode, I took a step back and started asking myself; what constitutes a tool? Is my tractor a tool? Are 5 gallon buckets tools? Are my All American Canners Tools? What about shovels, rakes and pitchforks? How about wheelbarrows and wagons? What is a tool?

What I decided to do was focus on hand and power tools that I have found to be the most helpful here on our homestead. These are tools I find myself reaching for over and over and over again. And, in many cases I have found uses for them way beyond what I first bought them for. In some cases, I resisted buying them for awhile simply because I am a cheapskate. Finally, I tried to focus on tools that I think almost every homestead will find useful.

Now, I skipped over kind of obvious things like screwdrivers, hammers, shovels, rakes, etc. I actually did consider putting a snow shovel on this list because we actually have found that to be the most effective tool for cleaning out our chicken coop. But, I resisted the temptation. Now, I am sure that after I put this episode out, I am going to think about tools that I should have put on this list. And so maybe in the not too distant future, there will be a part two to this. And I would LOVE to hear from you as to the tools you have found invaluable on your homestead. When it comes to our homestead journey, I don’t have a lot of regrets. That’s not to say that things have always been easy or have gone according to plan. That’s certainly not the case. There have been a lot of failures along the way. Or, actually, I like to look at them as Thomas Edison did when he was accused of failing 10,000 times before inventing the light bulb. He said, “No, I didn’t fail. I just learned 10,000 ways it doesn’t work.”

If you haven’t gathered this by now, that is really how I approach homesteading in general. It is all a big experiment. What works for others may not work for me. And what works for me may not work for others. Generally speaking, whether in homesteading or life in general, I look at failures as learning opportunities. What can I take away from this so I don’t make the same mistake in the future? For me, generally it’s not a matter of, “I wish I could go back and do things differently….” Those flaws, those mistakes, those things that haven’t gone according to plan are what have made me who I am today and are building blocks for the future.

But, there are a handful of things that come to my mind that I really do wish I could go back and do over. They are lessons I’ve learned, but there’s really not much I can do with those lessons other than share them with other people in the hopes that they won’t make the same mistakes that I have. And so I share with you 6 of my biggest regrets so far in our homesteading journey.

Taking vacations can be complicated in and of themselves. Deciding where you are going, where you are staying, who is going (and sometimes who is NOT going) can all be stressful. But, adding a homestead to the equation makes things that much more difficult. Depending on the size of your homestead and the season, it can be very tricky to get away. This episode is being released the Sunday after we have returned from our vacation. And so I thought it would be helpful to share with you some of the things we do and maybe you should do to prepare your homestead for vacation.

  1. When? Timing is everything. Try to avoid time away during the busiest of seasons.
  2. Who? Do you need someone to cover your chores and look after your garden? If so, who?
  3. What? What needs to be done? Have a detailed plan.
  4. How? How can you simplify things to make things as easy as possible?
  5. Feed. Make sure you have enough on hand. And not just enough; have extra.
  6. Fences. If you've got animals, check your infrastructure. You don't want to have your neighbors upset at you or your farm sitters chasing your animals all over God's creation.
  7. Contingency plans. Have a first aid kit ready and the number to your vet handy.

This week I had a friend offer me some roosters for processing. The only thing that he asked for in return when I butchered them were the feet...... and the combs. Now, I was familiar with using chicken feet in cooking. In fact, a few weeks ago, I tried making some stock with the chicken feet. (As you may recall, I botched the attempt.) However, I had never heard of using cockscombs in cooking. Well, it's a thing. Now, we often talk about nose to tail cooking; trying to use as much of pigs and cows as possible. But, sometimes we overlook applying that same approach to chickens. So, I've called today's episode, "From Beak To Butt: Using the WHOLE Chicken". We talk about using everything from the necks to the testicles and pretty much everything in between. Hopefully you find this episode interesting; maybe even inspiring. Just like we have seen an interest in people gardening and raising their own meat, lately there has been an increase in the number of people wanting to learn how to can. But, some people find this to be a daunting task. In fact, I know several people who have a pressure canner sitting in a closet because they are too afraid to try it.

So, if you’re one of those people (new to canning or too afraid to try), my goal is to help you get started. I’ve said I’m not an expert in many things. And maybe I'm not an expert here either. But, this is an area where I do have quite a bit of experience. I’ve been doing this for 14 years and have literally canned thousands of jars of food.

So. on this episode we talk about the two different methods of canning that are approved for home food preservation; water bath canning and pressure canning. We talk about how they are the same and how they are different. We discuss the ways that you would apply the two methods.

We also delve into some of the reasons why I think people avoid pressure canning in favor of hot water bath canning. And I share why I think they are wrong. We also talk quite a bit about botulism; what it is, how it multiplies and what you can do to avoid having it in your canned goods. Much of that information comes from this website.

Finally, we talk about some common sense things people can do to ensure that they are canning safely.

For many people, when they think about preserving meat, the first thing that comes to mind (and the only thing that comes to mind, is freezing.) And while that is certainly a good option and it is a relatively cheap and fool proof option, it is just that, an option. What many people don’t realize is that there are many other ways that you can safely preserve meat on your homestead without the use of a freezer.

On this episode we talk about the various options that exist (I am certain this is not a comprehensive list) for preserving meat on your homestead.

Many homesteaders dream of the large property; 5, 10, 15 or 20 acres of land on which they can grow all the things, raise all the things and do all the things. Today's guest, Brenda Scott from http://wellfedhomestead.com is someone who had an opportunity to realize that dream. She and her family left a small suburban lot for a 30 acre homestead. And they quickly learned that bigger isn't always better. In fact, eventually, they sold that homestead and downgraded again to a suburban lot before relocating from Oregon to Virginia (to another suburban sized lot). She is in the process of writing a book entitled, "Why We Failed At Homesteading" and joins us to discuss why a bigger homestead isn't always better.

If you're someone who thinks that you HAVE to have a large homestead in order to be considered a "Real Homesteader", then this episode is for you. If you're someone who is on a smaller piece of land and you feel inadequate, this episode is for you. The goal certainly isn't to squash anyone's dreams. But, we do hope that the lessons they learned will help you make a better, more informed decision with regards to your homesteading journey.

I had planned on covering a different topic on this episode. But this past Thursday a local farmer had a serious accident. Somehow she was entrapped in a hay baler. It was so bad they had to fly in a surgical team to surgically extract her from the equipment. That really is just a polite way to say that they had to cut off her arm.

Now, this certainly is not the first time I’ve been aware of a farming accident. Unfortunately, I have lost cousins in farming accidents. My good friend Carl was killed in an accident in 2018. And a friend of mine from church lost his father-in-law last fall in a tractor roll over accident. I could also share with you stories of other family members and friends who have been seriously injured in ag related accidents.

And so, this week I felt like it would be a good thing to talk about safety on the homestead. Did you know that in the US, 2 of the top most dangerous jobs are farming related? In fact, according to this article from USAToday.com, it is more dangerous to be a farmer than it is to be a police officer or firefighter.

But, it’s not just adults that are at risk on our farms or homesteads. Farms and homesteads can be a dangerous place for kids.

According to these stats from Rural Mutal Insurance:
* 1 child dies in an ag related incident every 3 days
* 33 children are seriously injured every day
* Tractors cause 40 % of accidental farm deaths of children under 15
* More than half of young children injured on the farm were not working but were bystanders or playing in the wrong spot.

These stats also reveal the following regards to the top sources of ag related deaths and injures:

Top Causes of Fatal Ag Injuries
* Machinery
* Motor Vehicles (includes ATVs)
*Drowning

Top Cause of Non-Fatal Ag Injuries
* Falls
* Animal
* Machinery/Vehicles

Now, I realize that there is a fine line between what constitutes farming and what constitutes homesteading. But, let’s face it. As homesteaders we use a lot of equipment that many people who live in urban and suburban areas don’t ever touch. We are also involved in things that many people who live in urban and suburban areas aren’t involved in like DIY projects, animal husbandry, and food preservation just to name a few.

All of these things; the equipment and projects carry a certain level of risk. And so, we need to manage that risk as best we can to ensure that we and our families do not become yet another statistic.

So on this episode we talk about some of the causes of injuries on the homestead and things we can do to help mitigate or avoid those things all together. I want your homestead journey to be a beautiful one for you and your family. I don’t want to see it marred by injury, disfigurement or death. So, homestead safely my friends.

So many things that need to be cleaned up and put away, areas that need to be organized. I'm driven to try to raise and grow as much food as possible. And the recent events that we have gone through have simply amplified that even more.

I'll be honest; sometimes it is hard for me to slow down and simply enjoy my homestead. I feel guilty; like I'm wasting time. I tell myself that the time that I'm taking to sit on the porch, could be used to get another thing done on my to-do list. I could start another project. Or finish up another project. It is very hard for me to slow down and enjoy my homestead.

I also sometimes fail to see the beauty. All I see are the projects that need to be done. Coops that need to be painted. Chicken runs that need to be tended too. Weeds that need to be pulled. And the list goes on and on. But, I'm surrounded by beauty. And sometimes I need to be reminded of that. A friend who had never visited our homestead before stopped by this week. She complimented me on how neat and organized things are. Honestly, I don't usually see that. But, she did. And her perspective helped me see it too!!

And so on this episode I share with you four lessons that I am learning (or at least trying to learn) about simply enjoying my homestead.

  • Plant and build beautiful things
  • Sit on the porch and enjoy the sights and sounds
  • See the beauty; not the to do list
  • Think about how far you've come; not how far you've still got to go

This week I had a potential customer reach out to me with some great questions. She wanted to know what I fed my animals and why my general philosophical approach was to farming. I loved those questions. First, I love that someone is actually thinking about and caring about where their food comes from. Second, it was an opportunity for me to again think about what we do and why. And so, on this episode I share with you my response to her. In part, I describe the pragmatic approach that we take to farming. We simply are trying to do the best we can with what we've got. My goal is to be as organic as possible. But, I use a conventional feed? Why? One one hand it is a matter of availability. I want a locally grown feed; not an "organic feed" that is trucked in from Timbuktu. Why? Because, unless I know the farmer that raised it, I don't trust the organic/non-GMO label.

The other is a matter of cost. The one farm that is local to me that sells an organic/non-GMO feed is charging almost 3x's as much as what I pay for my "conventional" feed. After reading this book, I am not sure that the benefit is there.

Now, I understand that my approach won't make everyone happy. But, I do think that sometimes we pressure people into seeking an ideal that either isn't possible or isn't possible now. And, if we aren't careful, what we mean to be helpful, can serve to be discouraging. Failure to live up to the ideal can and will either keep people from the homestead journey or it will cause them to quit. Instead, my goal is to encourage you and everyone you know to simply "Do the best you can with what you've got." Your situation might not be ideal to others; it might not even be ideal to you. But, do the best today with what what you've got today. And then take the next step. And the next step. And the next. If you do that, I think you'll be ok. And you might raise and grow some delicious and nourishing food along the way!!

As I recorded this episode, one of the biggest news stories is a potential protein shortage at the grocery store due to processing difficulties a the commercial meat plants due to COVID-19. What can homesteaders do to ensure that they have a constant supply of protein for their families? One answer might be meat rabbits. On this episode we talk about their pros and cons. I will confess. I don't like keeping records. I've never been able to keep a diary. Or consistently journal. And that is a level of record keeping that is at least a little bit fun. But, tracking finances, or animals, or garden production, or canning amounts, or pantry and freezer inventory? That's boring stuff. Right now, there are more people wanting to garden than ever. Well, maybe that is an overstatement, but there are certainly so many people interested in planting seeds, that many seed companies are either out of seeds entirely, or have had to suspend the taking of new orders to restock or simply to catch up.

Whether you are new to gardening or you've been at it awhile, we all want to maximize our return on investment. After all, we put in a heck of a lot of blood, sweat and tears and money to grow our own food. And, while some people may live on a gazillion acres, most of us have a limited area to which we can dedicate raising and growing our own food.

But, beyond that, right now there is a lot of uncertainty in our world. And many of us are trying to grow as much food as possible simply because we want to make sure our families don't go hungry. So, on this episode we talk about 5 things we are doing on our homestead this year to try to maximize the amount of food we harvest from our garden.

Those five things are:

  3. Companion planting

On this episode we talk about 10 Gardening Mistakes People Make And How To Avoid Them in my attempt to help you raise and grow as much food as possible. After all, one of the biggest ways you can become better prepared on your homestead is to raise and grown your own food. And I want to help you avoid making some of the mistakes that I have made.

So, on this episode we talk about how:
1. People don't know their first and last average frost dates, why that's important, and where you can find that information (http://almanac.com)
2. People plant things not suited for their hardiness zone (https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/)
3. People direct sow seeds that should be started indoors.
4. People sow indoors seeds that should be direct sown.
5. People plant the wrong things (in other words, they plant what OTHER people are planting instead of planting what THEY like to eat!)
6. People plant too much. Yes, you can have too much of a good thing!! Been there, done that!
7. People try to get too much into an area overcrowding (and stressing) their plants.
8. People wait too long (or even forget) to harvest. What a waste!! The veggies won't wait for you. You've got to pick them when they are ready to achieve maximum harvest.
9. People plant only once instead of multiple times to achieve multiple (successive) harvests.
10. People try to "set it and forget it". Your garden needs care. Weeding, watering, and feeding are something you'll need to do, regardless of gardening methods.

Brian is a 4th generation homesteader located in beautiful upstate NY.  Along with his wife, Bonnie (also a 4th generation homesteader) and their son Brian Jr., Brian has been actively homesteading on a 2 acre piece of land since 2008.  This podcast is dedicated to their journey and is a call for others to join them in pursuing self sufficiency, self reliance, and sustainability.
