Joshua Vogel is a perinatal epidemiologist and public health researcher currently working as Principal Research Fellow at the Burnet Institute, where he co-heads the multi-disciplinary Global Women’s and Newborn’s Health group.
The biggest barriers we have are people and outdated attitudes.
Join us this week as we interview Dr. Dinesh Palipana, 2021 Queensland Australian of the Year, the first quadriplegic medical intern in Queensland as well as the second person to graduate from medical school with quadriplegia in Australia. Dinesh has been a key advocate for disability and a founding member of Doctors with Disabilities Australia, explore his journey as well as his interest in increasing diversity within our medical schools.

In this podcast, we have guest speakers Connor and Harrison from Monash Queer Health Collective talking about queer health and sexual health from the lens of a medical student. What is the link between queer and sexual health? What kind of challenges do LGBTQI+ individuals face in the healthcare setting from their treating healthcare professionals? What is the state of current education regarding sexual health and queer health in a secondary and tertiary setting? And most importantly: what are some of the things that healthcare professionals and society can do to improve their understanding of sexual health and queer health? Tune in to find out more!
How do urology, cancer and sexual health intersect? Dr Roger Watson, a Brisbane-based urologist subspecialising in urological oncology and the current Director of Urology and Urogynaecology at the Mater Adults Hospital, discusses the impact of urological cancers - prostate, testicular and bladder cancer - and their treatment on sexual health. He also explores various pharmacological and surgical options for management of sexual difficulties after cancer treatment, and emphasises the importance of counselling patients and helping them adjust to changes in sexual function after cancer.
Dr Maree O’Sullivan, Director of Sexual Health at Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service and Dr Caroline Thng, a Sexual Health and HIV Specialist at Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, share their insights in the field of sexual heath. How do clinicians build up rapport with patients and open up discussion on intimate issues? What are some of the most common misconceptions regarding sexual health that patients might come in with? Listen in for some expert advice from these experienced sexual health physicians!
TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual Assault
What happens when clinicians don’t respect patients' bodies or listen to their verbal and nonverbal cues? Dr. Eleanor Freedman, Medical Director of Northern Sydney Sexual Assault Service, guides a discussion centered around the importance of implementing universal trauma informed care. The necessity of clinicians forming a partnership with their patients, acknowledging difficulties, validating the patient experience and most importantly stopping and listening, fosters a bridge of humanity between patient and doctor. This is particularly vital to facilitate safe disclosures of sexual assault and patient centered pelvic examinations. How do we identify distress? What measures can be taken to make a routine procedure for clinicians safe and respectful for patients who may have experienced trauma and are in a vulnerable setting? How do we encourage discussions of sexual functioning in all medical settings, breaking down the “taboo” nature of sex? Tune in to find out the answers!
