Ever catch yourself saying, "I accept myself, but…”? That little "but" that sneaks in with doubts, judgments, and conditions—well, it’s a subtle way we hold ourselves back from fully embracing who we are right now. And I get it; I’m working on this, too. Radical acceptance is about saying, “I accept exactly who I am in this moment,” no conditions or caveats.

Yes, we're back to this topic again.

And the reason I keep talking about perimenopause and how it’s making me CRAZY is because this is such a hot topic at the studio and has been for many months.

There are so many of us going through this life transition, and I want us all to feel less alone.

First, I need to accept that this is a life phase that I’m going through (and as I say on this week’s show, I’m grateful in a way for it as it means I’ve gotten this far.)

And second, many women - on the other side of it - describe that place as calm, grounded, and dare I say even peaceful (BRING. IT. ON.)

This got me thinking about the serenity prayer and accepting the things I cannot change, the courage to change those I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Ever feel like you're stuck in the wrong gear, grinding away at life’s to-do lists, feeling overwhelmed by the news cycle, or battling those moments when resistance creeps in? I’ve definitely been there. It’s like driving a standard shift car—you’re in the wrong gear, things feel clunky, and you’re not getting anywhere fast.

So, what do you do? You shift into neutral.

This week, I'm talking about the power of pausing, letting go of the resistance, and giving yourself space to reset.

We’ve all been there – something happens, and we immediately feel the heat - or hurt - rising within us. Maybe it’s a conversation that didn’t go as expected, or someone’s actions rub us the wrong way, leaving us feeling frustrated or even hurt. It’s in these moments that I’ve learned to pause and ask myself one powerful question: What is my most generous interpretation of this situation?

In this week’s podcast episode, I’m exploring this practice and how it has helped me reframe challenging moments. If you find yourself reacting in frustration or anger, tune in to hear how you can begin to use this simple question to navigate those feelings with more ease and grace.

Ever notice how when we're thinking about making a change—whether it’s something small, like switching up a routine, or something big, like a career shift—our brains go straight to what we might lose?

But how often do we pause and really “weigh” what we might gain? I know I don’t always do this.

So, here’s my challenge to all of us this week: When faced with a choice, let’s try to balance both sides of the scale.

Labor Day has now come and gone and most of us are now looking at getting back to our routines… any virtual nods or hand raises?!

So what does the Olympics have to do with this?

Allow me to explain…

For starters, I love the Olympics and really enjoyed watching them this summer and chatting about them at the studio.

I’m a bit Simone obsessed…

And that’s what inspired this week’s podcast and message.

Life is full of twists and turns, and for many of us, the journey through perimenopause and menopause can feel like an especially winding path. If you’re feeling confused, overwhelmed, or even lost in this stage of life, know that you’re not alone. In fact, I’m right there with you.

I share on this week’s show that I feel like I’m in a complete state of identity confusion. I’ve had a hysterectomy, I’m on HRT, I’m in perimenopause, but I still seem to get PMS?!? I’m a confused mess!

Unless you just recently joined us, you know that we celebrated our 10th anniversary during the entire month of June. Part of the festivities included a new website for the studio. And of course that meant going through the site and reviewing.

So I went back to the first post. Oh my.

I forwarded it to my sister and said:

I’m laughing. I’m crying. I’m shaking my head. So much has changed. SO much is the same.

Summer is here, and with it comes a lot of fun (hopefully!)—and often a shift in our schedules and routines. But I've discovered something powerful: getting consistent with just one thing can keep you anchored, no matter what the season throws at you. Consistency in one thing can have a ripple effect, creating great habits that stick.

So, this summer, find your fitness anchor and stick with it. Stay consistent with that one thing, and let it guide you through the fun and the busy times.

I guess it’s fitting that 10 years into Get Lively, I’m podcasting about something that I chat about often… how I often struggle replaying useless stories over and over in my head.

The second guessing, the fear, and blah, blah, blah.

In my latest loop with these doubts and fears, I was able to hit the internal pause button and say:

Jan, you are doing it again. You know this doesn’t help you at ALL, so what’s a better thing to do right now?

And it came to me: THINK FORWARD.

Ever find yourself saying OVER and OVER that you want something for your life but you just can't seem to get traction?

Yup, that was me at the start of the year as I was losing energy like a leaky faucet and couldn't seem to get myself focused on working in the way I wanted – with focus, with a plan, and enthusiasm.

“More people need a place to feel good about themselves, to co-exist, to feel worthy of having a seat at the table.”

That is what I found in a notebook that I picked up the other day to write some things down. It was a notebook I haven't picked up in some time (yes, I have tons and they are all over the place) and after I wrote down what I didn't want to forget, I leafed back to see what I had previously written.

You know I love sharing snippets and concepts from books that I'm reading… and the book this time around is: The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday.

This book has been on my list for awhile (thank you, Jay!) and I've read others by this author, but as usual, this one is striking at just the right time.

The concept of this book is not new – but it rarely is – rather, it's being open to receiving the message at the time you read or hear it. And boy was I primed for this one!

I took time over the Christmas break to take a closer look at the functions of Get Lively and how to grow as a business so that we can continue to be everything WE need to be for our community.

And with that, taking a hard look at what I've been doing and asking if I should be doing them just because “that's how I've been doing it for years.”

I went through many aspects of the business and found myself getting really stuck on certain functions that frankly, take a lot of time for me to do, and that time may be better well spent on other functions.

This podcast was one of them.

But, ultimately, I've decided that we will switch to a bi-weekly show. Listen to this episode to learn more about this change.

As promised, here is part two of my thoughts and reflections after watching the Netflix docuseries: Live to 100: Lessons from the Blue Zones.

In last week’s show, I talked about the lessons we have to learn from how people who live in these regions eat and move… and to break it down in the simplest of terms:

They eat mostly plants, foods they grow, very little that is processed.

They move a lot, they garden, they walk, they do manual labor (ie. no kitchen aid in these regions).

So there’s that, but what I really wanted to talk about this week was what they do beyond food and exercise that seems to contribute to their longevity…

Their sense of community.

Their sense of purpose.

Listen to this week's episode as I share more.

I watched a docuseries called: Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, on Netflix.

I first learned about the “blue zones” about a decade ago while studying at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.  If you are not familiar with the phrase, it’s the five areas around the globe where people live/or have lived, much higher than average.  So basically, much higher percentages of people living into 100 and beyond.

This week’s show and email are basically my reaction to what I saw, heard, and learned.  I’m not even sure how to process it all, but I do want to share my thoughts.

And I hope it applies to all of our summer experiences!

Let’s release the PUSH and PULL of the levers in life.

Let’s be fluid and move freely like hydraulics.

How does this relate to your health and well being?

If you haven’t yet watched Ted Lasso, do yourself the favor and tune in to this wonderful show.

In this week's episode, I share five lessons this extraordinary character has taught us throughout three seasons:

HOPE - hope that positivity can prevail and that there is always good to see in life.

FUN - Ted reminded us, and SHOWED us, how to enjoy the simple things in life.

STRUGGLE - being human and all, Ted showed us his struggle.

CHOICE - he showed us how to make very hard decisions.

BELIEVE - and finally, he taught us to believe.

Listen now and let me know what you think.

In this latest addition of “Jan’s Mind is Blown” by her own thoughts, I’ve discovered this…

We prepare ourselves for many things in life.

Personally, I love to lay out a plan, look at the data, and figure out how to make something work.

I did it almost a decade ago when launching Get Lively.

In this week’s show, I share so many examples of how I see this in the work that I do as a coach.

This week's show is taking a bit of a different turn, but it's very much what is on my mind right now so I thought I'd share.

It's been two years since my dad passed away. I've talked about it on the show before, but I'm sharing this episode today as I've found myself really struggling the past few weeks.

I've been pretty sad. At first, I didn't quite get what was going on… I figured the typical hormones gone wild, or the stress of owning a business, and sure, that is likely contributing, but it felt like more.

And it is more.

Tune in to find out what I mean.

Prioritizing yourself.

I don’t know about you, but it almost feels cliche at this point.  Do you agree?

We talk so much about burnout and how we need to prioritize ourselves - especially women - but what does that actually MEAN?

This week we are joined by Kristin Klipp, owner of Truth Lives Within.  Kristin and I know each other as she previously owned a yoga studio in the area and we both live and work in the wellness space.

Tune in as we chat about this and more!

You can learn more about this show’s guest, Kristin Klipp at www.truthliveswithin.com and on IG @truthliveswithin.

If you've been with me for awhile, you know that one of my most favorite quotes is:

A rising tide lifts all boats.

Of course credit to JFK, but my former boss Marianne is the one I need to credit as she used to say this all the time and it really stuck with me. So much that I say it ALL the time.

It's one of the reasons why I'm so committed to our mission: to help YOU smile MORE.

Tune into this week's episode as I talk more about that.

Yes, this podcast idea came to me while I was on my spin bike…

You see, I was on my bike, thinking about everything BUT being on my bike.

I've been getting into this pattern lately…

I find myself RUSHING through what I'm doing so I can get the NEXT things done.

Anyone relate?

Tune into this week's show to hear more, but I'll share that I'm using my five senses to help bring me into the present and slow this ‘ole brain down a bit to be more present – and with that, more calm and happy.

What a month this has been so far…

We are nearing a month at our new studio location and it's been days and weeks of squats, smiles, parties, and welcoming lots of lively peeps into our new home.

It's been SO much fun.

And it's been SO exhausting!

Yes, I just typed that. I'm so freaking tired. I'm also so energized by it all.

And so in this week's episode, I decided to take you “behind the scenes” and share ALL that I'm experiencing right now.

It took me 280 episodes to finally have the tables turned on ME!

On this week's show, I handed over the mic to our gal pal, business bestie, and frequent podcast guest Courtney Hurst to interview me! (Spoiler alert: she nails the intro!)

Why did we do this you might ask?

Well beyond the obvious reasons – we had a great time laughing and planning for this show – but the real reason is because I've got BIG NEWS to share.

Get Lively® is opening in our new space in a few days.

But it's SO much more than that… so tune into this episode to hear more.

We treat our bodies like they are our ENEMY... no wonder why we struggle so much.

Everything was put into perspective for me when I was listening to Glennon Doyle’s podcast “We Can Do Hard Things” with Sonya Renee Taylor, and Sonya said this:

Mic drop.

We are not separate entities designed to battle our lives away.

And well, that is exactly what I’m sharing today.

Tune into this week's episode as I dive into this with you!

I thought about something that I have been REALLY beating myself about – certainly for all of this year, but really, for years.

I do not feel driven enough.
I don't feel I have enough self discipline.
I don't feel like I put enough into my work.

But I'm ready for a change, because I don't want to carry this with me into 2023… and perhaps there is something that you want to leave in 2022 too.

Listen to this episode to learn my plan for letting go of this baggage that I no longer want to carry.

You see, my friends, I'm a WORLD CLASS gripper.

I grip onto experiences like my life depends upon it.

When I experience something fun, positive, kind, funny, or heartfelt – I want it to keep happening. I grip onto that experience and I want more.

This isn't necessarily news to me, as I pretty much know this about myself, but part of a passage in The Daily Stoic really brought this to light for me.

A recent experience reminded me that there are so many ways in which we can “be of service” in this life.

Sometimes “being of service” to another can be as simple as listening. It's almost a lost art form these days, but as a recent experience reminded me, it can be a real gift to another person.

I mentioned a recent experience that called this to my attention…

It's actually two fold as I was connecting with a friend, and as I was listening to them and in turn sharing my thoughts, it gave me pause about my own life and things I had accomplished.

Truth be told, I'd been in a bit of a rut prior to this… but having the opportunity to sit and listen to someone else, to give them that space, and then later reflect on my own growth, well, it made me smile for days.

Listen to this episode as I talk more about it.

It's time to share something I've been dreaming up the past few years: Get Lively®: Business Edition!

I will officially be offering business coaching services to two types of dreamers:

People just like me who are looking to make a career change and either start their own business, or leap into something COMPLETELY different, just like I did.

And…

Early stage entrepreneurs.  People who started a business in the last few years (the Pandemic being the impetus for so many people to leave their jobs and start their own gig) and who are now struggling to create infrastructure, to reach their audience, to navigate ALL that comes with being a solo, small business owner.

Ready to learn more about how I can support you? Listen to this episode!

Like me, you probably have many examples of struggles in your life, ranging from trying to conquer the choices of others to trying to conquer a number on the scale.  And when you can accept that you no longer need to conquer them (or in my case, just accept that you can’t accept them) you will begin to find some peace.

I was mindlessly scrolling through videos this morning…

As much as I tend to waste time doing this, sometimes (like this morning), I land on a gem.

It was a snippet from a talk by Jesse Itzler, who was talking about how he got started.

He shares many great stories, but here’s what struck me:

“What you don’t know can be your greatest asset.  It usually means you will do it differently from everyone else.”

THIS IS ME.

Listen to this week's episode to find out what I mean.

I’d NEVER considered myself an athlete until my friend referred to me as one.

“I’m not an athlete!” I proclaimed.

She looked at me and said: You just ran a 10k, of course you are.

And that was the first moment where I fashioned myself to be an athlete.

I tried that cloak on.

And well, about 14 years later, look where that led me…

It makes me think about how we often don’t think we are worthy of describing ourselves in certain ways… How it often takes someone else pointing it out to us.

Do you feel that way about something? Listen to this week's episode as I discuss this topic further.

Oh friends, if we could only break this pattern of thinking…

If we could only stop looking at food as “good” or “bad” and as exercise as a way to “burn off” our sins.

It doesn’t have to be this way.  We have been led to this way of thinking.

And that means, there are other ways.

So maybe for the rest of this week, you give it a try.

Listen to this week's episode for some ideas on how to do that.

I’m going to be VERY truthful here…

People often say things to me like: you are so driven and such a go-getter.

Believe me, I am most grateful for this impression and that people perceive me this way, but truth be told, most of the time, I STRUGGLE to get myself to take action on things.

So often I get paralyzed by fear and overwhelm and procrastinate doing things.

I’d say in these scenarios, I’m about 20% drive and 80% fight.

I really have to fight all my inner dialogue to get myself to do things.

So I’m always looking for ways to look at my situations differently and get myself into action. I share what they are in this week's episode.

We chat about things being “good enough” all the time.

We chat about doing SOMETHING is always better than doing NOTHING.

We chat about trying to let go of that “All or Nothing” way of thinking.

Yet, we still find ourselves doing it… me included!

So what does that mean? Well, it means we keep practicing thinking another way.

Listen to this podcast episode to find out what I mean.

Later this month will be Get Lively's 8th anniversary! Where does the time go?!?

That leads me to this week's message...

I was listening to a podcast the other day and on it the host asked:

Are you a Magician, Maverick, or Muse?

Immediately I said to myself: I’M A FREAKING MAVERICK!

And no sooner had I claimed the title, I started to pull back and ask myself:

Do I DESERVE to call myself that?

After spending some time doubting myself, I realized that through ALL of the ups and downs, I'm still here.

That makes me a maverick... and you are, too.

As someone who promotes eating well and exercising for a living, people tend to think it all comes super easy for me...

But I, just like many other people, struggle with eating too much.

I find myself eating what many would consider “healthy” food, but I’m just eating too much of it OR I’m eating it for reasons other than hunger.

I always say that I’m Get Lively’s ultimate guinea pig as I have my food struggles too and I’m always looking for ways to improve upon my own habits.

So in this week’s show, I’m sharing how I work to understand and curb my overeating as I coach you - and me too.

I was chatting with a client the other day about how over the last two years, among all the other crazy things that have gone on, we realized we have fallen into a place of just consuming.

This hit me over the head like a 2 x 4 because I realized how much I am doing this... consuming at the cost of creation.

We don’t create any more! We just consume.

So that’s what this week's podcast is about. It’s about how one of the many many things that has come out of life during a pandemic, is this pattern of consuming at the cost of creating.

Yes, sometimes a TV show comes along and gives you EXACTLY what you need.

And boy did I need Ted Lasso!

Anybody else feel that way?

So… looking back over the last several emails/podcasts and I have to say, the mood has been a bit somber.

I do my best to keep things real here and I’m certainly not going to shout cheers each week if they aren’t genuine, so the last several shows have been reflective of what I’ve been feeling… and in chatting with some of you, it seems how many of us have been feeling.

But I was ready for a shift in mood.  I was ready to start feeling more lively.

Enter, Ted Lasso.
