Book challenges and threats to intellectual freedom are on the rise nationwide, and community support of public libraries is more important than ever. The Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center and the Cranston Public Library presented a panel discussion looking at the historical context of intellectual freedom and how we can respond and advocate for these institutions and freedoms in the present. Bringing together historians, public librarians, and free speech advocates, this event framed the importance of protecting and advocating for institutions that enable a free and pluralistic society.
This panel discussion and audience Q&A was moderated by Tayla Cardillo, chair of the RI Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee, and featured opening remarks from library trustee Michael Goldberg. Panelists included: Brigitte Hopkins and Bill Lancellotta from the Westerly Library; Steven Brown, Executive Director of the Rhode Island ACLU; and Michael Bryant, Professor of History and Legal Studies at Bryant University.

In 2011, Robb Dimmick, co-founder of the awarding non-profit, Stages of Freedom, curated the groundbreaking exhibit, "Creative Survival: African American Foodways in Rhode Island, 1690 to the Present." Held at the Culinary Arts Museum, the exhibit, the first of its kind, garnered national attention and achieved the Museum's largest attendance and longest run. In this episode, Dimmick shares his talk, "Opening the Oyster: Black Rhode Island Foodways” for Rhody Radio listeners. Join Dr. Mehnaz Afridi, professor of religious studies at Manhattan College and the director of the Holocaust, Genocide & Interfaith Education Center, as she introduces us to her book, Shoah Through Muslim Eyes, which was nominated for the Yad Vashem International Book Prize for Holocaust Research and the Jacob Schnitzer Book Award. In this presentation, Dr. Afridi takes us through her research on the Muslim perspective of the Holocaust and antisemitism, and introduces us to how the Muslim world in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe was impacted by the Holocaust. With her research and writing, Dr. Afridi brings to light the enormity of the Holocaust for the world and in particular the Muslim reader, and calls for readers to find interfaith solidarity with each other.
This podcast is presented in collaboration with the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center Baxt Lecture Series, an annual event that brings Holocaust education to the greater Rhode Island community.

This election day, we're celebrating this starting point in the civic process with an excerpt from a recent episode of Down Time with Cranston Public Library in which we talked with Tammy and Emily from the Womxn Project and John Marion from Common Cause RI to talk about voting and other ways to get involved with the government in the Ocean State. You’ll also hear our regular segment, The Last Chapter, where we discuss a library or bookish question. Join Howard S. Veisz, a dedicated volunteer in the Watercraft Department at the Mystic Seaport Museum since 2009, as he shares the story of Henny Sinding Sundø and Gerda III, the boat Henny used to save Jewish lives during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. Veisz's book, Henny and Her Boat, provides a fresh perspective on the Danes' defense of their Jewish countrymen during years of Nazi occupation and, ultimately, their heroic rescue of the Danish Jews on a fleet of fishing boats and other small craft.
This podcast is presented in collaboration with the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center Baxt Lecture Series, an annual event that brings Holocaust education to the greater Rhode Island community.

In 2009 Howard S. Veisz left a litigation career and went to sea. After a two-year sailing voyage around the North Atlantic, Howard and his wife settled on Connecticut’s Mystic River, and Howard began work as a shipyard volunteer at the Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum. Howard worked in the rigging shop for a massive project: restoring Mystic’s 1841 whaling ship, the Charles W. Morgan, and getting it under sail for the first time in 93 years. As the whaling ship project wound down, Howard’s interest in Gerda III, also docked at Mystic Seaport Museum, arose.
With a father and grandparents who barely escaped Nazi Germany, Gerda III’s role in rescuing Denmark’s Jews drew Howard in. While helping to preserve Gerda III, Howard began a four-year mission to reconstruct its history. Howard traveled to Denmark to locate and interview descendants of the people who carried out Gerda III’s rescue missions; scoured Danish archives; visited the docks from which Gerda III set out; gathered accounts by leaders of the Gerda III rescue group that had never appeared in English; and assembled translators to uncover the fascinating story that had been buried in those writings for over seventy years.

Michael Fine, M.D. has been an advocate for communities, healthcare reform, and the care of under-served populations worldwide for 40 years. His career as a community organizer and family physician has led him to some of the poorest places in the United States, as well as dangerous, war-ravaged communities in developing countries. His experiences across the globe have enabled him to craft numerous short stories, novels and healthcare policy books about how we can change the world by empowering, caring for, and educating one another.
“Literature and imagination can build a better world. Imagination can help us see one another and envision what we can do together when we stop fighting and start dreaming,” says Fine. “I don’t think I know anything that other people haven't known for years. I just think of myself as a man who is too stubborn to accept the world as it is, and too pigheaded to accept no for an answer when someone asks if there is a better way."

2021 was a year that brought on the automatic physiological reaction of the fight or flight response in our bodies. This accumulated stress has affected all of us. Patricia McLaughlin is a mindfulness instructor and talks with librarian Jessica D’Avanza about how we can combat this stressor and calm the nervous system through mindfulness.
Patricia answers the questions, “What is mindfulness” and “How can it help me?” She shares tips for ways you can find ease in the world and discover the possibilities that the new year can offer.
At the end of their conversation, Patricia offers listeners a guided mindfulness exercise. You are invited to stick around and practice what you learn in this episode or come back to the mindfulness exercise at any time you feel it could be helpful.
Patricia McLaughlin, Esq., a professor of law, has been a member of the RI Bar for over 30 years and has held various leadership positions in education. She is a certified yoga teacher and mindfulness instructor who teaches a variety of offerings of in-person classes and online courses in workplace sessions and community settings. She is also a facilitator for Meditate Together, hosted by Mindful Leader, a worldwide program that offers free live group meditation sessions, 24 hours a day, five days a week in an effort to help as many people as possible during these challenging times.

Breaking news from the BH&PS Action News Team on May 25, 1778, as an invading regiment of British and Hessian soldiers marched through Bristol, RI, setting fire to the homes of rebels and loyalists alike. This thrilling radio play, produced in the style of CBS Radio’s You Are There series from 1947-1957, takes you on location with reporter William J. Bell (portrayed by Christopher Lane) describing the scene and interviewing soldiers and citizens from the scene of the action.
This episode was produced in collaboration with the Rogers Free Library, the Bristol Historical and Preservation Society, the Barrington Public Library, and Rhody Radio. Script for the Burning of Bristol was written by Rei Battcher.

The "Clock Man,” a.k.a. Philip D’Avanza, is standing outside of 404 Market Street in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, and is about to take a step inside the town's clock tower housed in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. The movement on this 125-year-old tower clock was taken apart, piece-by-piece in October 2020, and driven 450 miles to the Clock Man’s workshop in New Hampshire. Over the course of nine months, he repaired and refinished every part, restoring the clock to its original late nineteenth-century condition.
Come and hear the sound of a happy clock, on this tour of the inside of a clock tower. You will be guided by a man who is known, quite literally, to have “time on his hands.”
Philip D'Avanza has been in the clock repair business for over forty years. Since 1990, he has focused on tower clock repair in historic structures and is thoroughly familiar with the Guidelines for Historic Preservation as established by the Secretary of the Interior. He began his career in design and precision machining. Then utilized his skills as a tool and die maker to provide full-service repair and restoration on some of the most recognized tower clocks in New England. His work has received notice for several award-winning projects such as the Hallsville School in Manchester, NH, and the Massachusetts Trial Court in Fall River.

Jane Walker is living her dream as a shuttle driver at Roger Williams University (RWU) in Bristol, Rhode Island. Here, she interacts with students, transports them around campus, and encourages singing and merriment on her shuttle rides (especially on Thirsty Thursdays). But when the world changes overnight in mid-March 2020, she is forced onto unemployment and yearns for the day when she can be back at work doing what she loves.
RWU '20 graduate Alex Bowden, narrates this podcast and reflects on how graduating in 2020 has affected him over the past year. He reconnects with Jane to hear how she has coped throughout the pandemic. Together, they document the changes on campus and in their own lives, while expressing hope for the day when things get back to normal (as much as possible).
Alex Bowden is the former news director and general manager of 88.3 FM WQRI Radio in Bristol, Rhode Island, where he hosted a weekly talk show called The Bowden Breakdown. He is currently the podcast producer for local author and former head of health for the state of Rhode Island, Dr. Michael Fine’s Alternative Fictions podcast. Dr. Leslie Kern is an Associate Professor of Geography and Environment and Director of Women’s and Gender Studies at Mount Allison University. She is the author of Feminist City: Claiming Space in a Man-made World and Sex and the Revitalized City: Gender, Condominium Development, and Urban Citizenship. Her research focuses on gentrification in North American cities, exploring issues such as embodiment, gendered labor conditions, and environmental and human health using feminist urban theory.

What happens when a local Barrington writer and a writer in Texas each win a contest to have their manuscript published into a book?

Their first meeting was in Vermont at a writers retreat center in 2019. They call this meeting: predestined.

About the Authors
Elizabeth B. Splaine wrote the Dr. Julian Stryker series of “Blind” thrillers (Blind Order and Blind Knowledge), as well as Devil’s Grace, the winner of the When Words Count writing competition, released through Greenwriters Press. Her next book, Swan Song, an historical fiction novel, will be released in October 2021 through Woodhall Press.
Prior to writing, Elizabeth earned an AB in Psychology from Duke University and an MHA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She spent eleven years working in health care before switching careers to become a professional opera singer and voice teacher.
When not writing, Elizabeth teaches classical voice in Rhode Island where she lives with her husband, sons, and dogs.

Kathryn Brewster Haueisen is an author and retired Lutheran pastor. She combines her degree in journalism and her Master of Divinity degree to write about good people doing great things in the global village. Before beginning a second career as a pastor, her diverse work experience included copy writing and public relations work for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, an outdoor drama, a small college PR office, and a large university news service office. She has published over 75 articles and resources in dozens of national and regional publications.
The most recent of her six published books, Mayflower Chronicles: The Tale of Two Cultures, is her debut historical fiction. It covers European events that prompted a small group of religious rebels to establish a new English colony in North America and their earliest encounters with the Native community.

Providence Community Library was thrilled to have writer Julia Alvarez join the first meeting of PCL READS in May, 2020. PCL Reads is a citywide, one book, one community book discussion! ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Julia Alvarez left the Dominican Republic for the United States in 1960 at the age of ten. She is the author of six novels, three books of nonfiction, three collections of poetry, and eleven books for children and young adults. She has taught and mentored writers in schools and communities across America and, until her retirement in 2016, was a writer-in-residence at Middlebury College. Her work has garnered wide recognition, including a Latina Leader Award in Literature from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the Hispanic Heritage Award in Literature, the Woman of the Year by Latina magazine, and inclusion in the New York Public Library's program "The Hand of the Poet: Original Manuscripts by 100 Masters, from John Donne to Julia Alvarez." In the Time of the Butterflies, with over one million copies in print, was selected by the National Endowment for the Arts for its national Big Read program, and in 2013 President Obama awarded Alvarez the National Medal of Arts in recognition of her extraordinary storytelling.

New England is famous for its whalemen, but here’s a surprise: The second-largest collection of whaling logbooks is housed in the Providence Public Library, thanks to an eccentric collector named Paul C. Nicholson. Not only do the logbooks chronicle a century of life at sea, but they may help us navigate our future.

In honor of National Bicycle Month, this week’s episode of Rhody Radio features “Libraries, Bicycles, and Storytelling from the East Bay Bike Path.”
Guest hosted by Jessica D’Avanza, community engagement librarian at Barrington Public Library and a bike commuter, she invited listeners to record and share their bike path stories for this episode. Barrington Public Library is located a half-mile from the East Bay Bike Path. This nearly fourteen-mile scenic path and former rail bed of the Providence and Bristol Railroad received a lot of love from our listener-submitted stories.
Those who contributed were Robin Nyzio, Carl Seadale, Nancy Jakubowski, Rick Peltz-Steele, and Mark Binder.

Right at the height of the COVID pandemic, the West Warwick Public Library received a Library of Rhode Island grant from the Office of Library & Information Services funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to put on a summer writing camp for teens which had to be adapted to a virtual setting. Over the summer, the teens learned about writing, heard from writers and other professionals what a career in writing looks like, and at the end, published an anthology of short fiction works, Voices of the Lost Year, that captured the strange and intense feelings of our lost pandemic year. West Warwick Librarians Amber Bliss and Rashaa Al-Sasah sat down with Rhody Radio to share about the project!

Ged Carbone is a journalist who reported for the Providence Journal. He’s a graduate of Brown University with a Master’s degree in Public Humanities, and he’s the author of two biographies on George Washington and Nathanael Greene.

Within weeks of the state's COVID-19 shutdown in March 2020, the Rhode Island COVID-19 Archive was established. It began collecting submissions from Rhode Islanders to preserve their stories and experiences during the pandemic. In this episode, you’ll learn how the archive was created as a partnership between Providence Public Library and the Rhode Island Historical Society and hear from team members about its evolution, now a year later.
We hope you will be inspired to make your own contributions, in whatever form feels comfortable to you: photo, video, written word, audio recording, artwork, etc. The archive accepts submissions by anyone who wishes to document their experience of the pandemic in Rhode Island. To submit, visit ricovidarchive.org and view “Contribute an Item.” You will be asked to create an account before uploading your submission. You are welcome to identify yourself as the creator of the work or submit it anonymously if you prefer. Your experience matters and will shape how history comes to understand what it was like to live through COVID-19.

Lorén Spears, Executive Director of Tomaquag Museum, talks about the tours, programs, classes, workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and more offered by the vibrant and dynamic cultural institution in Exeter, Rhode Island.
Lorén M. Spears, Executive Director
Lorén is not only the executive director of Tomaquag Museum, she is also an educator, activist, author, and Indigenous artist. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1989 and master’s degree from the University of New England with a focus on elementary education. She founded the Nuweetooun School affiliated with the Tomaquag Museum (closed in 2010 due to flooding) and was a teacher in Newport public schools for 12 years. A 2017 winner of the Tom Roberts Prize for Creative Achievement in the Humanities from the Rhode Island Council on the Humanities, she was honored for her “compelling work as an advocate of Indigenous People’s history and cultural heritage in preservation, the arts, and education.” In 2010, Spears was named as one of 11 Extraordinary Women honorees for teaching and education.

2020 was a year that brought on the automatic physiological reaction of the fight or flight response in our bodies. This accumulated stress has affected all of us. Patricia McLaughlin is a mindfulness instructor and talks with librarian Jessica D’Avanza about how we can combat this stressor and calm the nervous system through mindfulness.
Patricia answers the questions, “What is mindfulness” and “How can it help me?” She shares tips for ways you can find ease in the world and discover the possibilities that 2021 can offer.
At the end of their conversation, Patricia offers listeners a guided mindfulness exercise. You are invited to stick around and practice what you learn in this episode or come back to the mindfulness exercise at any time you feel it could be helpful.
Patricia McLaughlin, Esq., a professor of law, has been a member of the RI Bar for over 30 years and has held various leadership positions in education. In today’s episode we are headed outside to set up a StoryWalk® at Sowams Woods, a property managed by the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. We will also hear from a few board members of the Trust to learn a bit about what they do to conserve open space in town and how you can enjoy a land trust property near you. A StoryWalk® is an innovative way to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Laminated pages from a children's book are attached to signposts along this one-mile loop trail where you can walk along this woodland path and read The Belonging Tree by Maryann Cocca-Leffler.
StoryWalks® were created in 2007 by Anne Ferguson in Montpelier, Vermont and have been installed in all 50 states and 12 countries.

Greg Abate is an internationally-acclaimed jazz musician and composer who’s regarded by many as one of the best post-bebop alto saxophone players in the world today.

Greg was born in Fall River, Massachusetts and grew up in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, he started his career as lead alto saxophone with the Ray Charles Orchestra and later played tenor saxophone with the Artie Shaw Orchestra.
Greg is an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at Rhode Island College, a Conn-Selmer Instrument Company jazz clinician, and a 2016 inductee into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame.

Barrington Public Library's Community Engagement Librarian, Jessica D'Avanza is joined by Kara Provost, a professor who teaches in the writing program at Curry College. Kara shares with us the many ways that poetry is used to process difficult emotions, pain, times of uncertainty and of course—joy! She shares two haiku she wrote while teaching a socially distant haiku writing workshop for the library on Zoom.
