What's On Draft?: Recent Episodes

Paul Valentine

Three hosts do a fantasy style draft around a prompt from movies, TV, music, history, pop culture, or anything else in the universe and then you vote on the winner!

Pizza toppings, fictional musicians, obscure sports, Star Wars side characters, conspiracy theories, actors, Starfleet crews, video game characters, serial killers... we'll make a draft out of anything!

Hello listeners! This is another episode that we recorded and then dawdled on getting edited and released, so enjoy this record of January 2024 us drafting what we think are going to be the most profitable movies of the year. This year's movie draft has an added twist in that we're considering the budget, so for each of our films we'll be calculating a score based on the total domestic profit versus the film's budget in a way that will weight movies that exceed their budget much higher in the ranking. This means a lot more horror films drafted by three guys who don't watch horror films, so what could go wrong! Listen in and see if you agree with our selections, and let us know what you think we got right/wrong!

Hello listeners! Several months ago we got together for our second ever live and in-person recording of the podcast, the first time since our very first recording! (We will blame the table drumming and microphone adjusting noises in the recording on our inexperience...) We did a follow-up to our previous trivia draft where each drafter had to select an answer to five trivia questions, but in draft style only one person could have each answer. How did they prioritize which answers to draft early on, and did someone come away as the winner? Listen in, play along, and let us know how you did! If you'd like to follow along with the draft questions, you can see them on this quiz sheet.

Hello listeners! In this episode (also a dated recording as you'll quickly note!) we are sticking up for the little guy. And by little guy, we mean mostly movies made by big studios and starring big actors that just didn't perform as well as they'd hope. We're each drafting five movies that won the Golden Razzberry award for Worst Film with the goal of making the most watchable collection of five films. If you had to, which team would you watch all five movies from? Listen in and then let us know!

Hello listeners! As you'll be able to tell from our discussion up top, this one was recorded way back in the olden times of 2023 but we're finally making our way through editing some of our back log. In this episode, Paul has ranked each year that he's been alive based on the most popular movie, song, TV show, and video game from that year. The three drafters attempt to put together the top scoring collection of years, but you can also just listen and try and decide which years you like the best! One. Hundred. Episodes! That's right listeners, we've done 100 drafts so we're coming in strong with a callback to our very first episode. Well, not that strong considering we spend four minutes up top talking about pillows but if you want to skip the pillow talk yo can always hit the timecodes! In our first episode we drafted U.S. presidents and put them into a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Of course, using U.S. presidents meant we had an all-male tournament so we decided to flip the scale and produce an all-female basketball tournament by drafted female world leaders throughout history. Which leading ladies did we find that could produce on the court? How much harder was this to research than the presidents? Listen in and find out!

Hello listener! This week we're thinking about nutrition and what sorts of food are healthiest to add into your diet, but in usual What's On Draft fashion we're putting a little spin on it - when you draft a food, you have to draft it for a specific nutritional element but you receive no other benefits from it. You want bananas for their potassium? OK, but then you get no vitamins, minerals, or anything else from the banana! Who can put together the healthiest and most nutritious menu within these guidelines? Listen in and then let us know!

Hello listeners! In this deadly episode of What's On Draft we're thinking about the apocalypse and the people who make it through. More specifically, would we want to make it through? Each of us are drafting a list of fictional, somewhat-tolerable apocalypses (and then assigning the worst one we can think of to someone else) and then playing a game of randomly selecting one from our team to live in. If you were also going to be randomly sorted into one apocalypse, which team would you go with? We're joined by special guest Maeve so you have four teams to choose from; listen in and let us know which one you'd pick!

Tomorrow is the Academy Awards, so naturally we hear at What's On Draft decided to put our usual spin on it! Hello listeners! This week we've got another geography based trivia podcast for you and in this one size does matter because we're looking for the countries that have the highest populations. Returning guest David joins us for a draft board that Cameron put together and we try to put together a team of five countries with the most people in them, and also answer some trivia questions for the opportunity to earn some extra people in our population pools (sort of a reverse Thanos situation). This one we recorded a while ago but then put on ice while we got ready to come back with a full supply of episodes so there might be some dated references, but listen in and see how well you can pick the countries playing along at home!

Hello listeners! The annual movie draft is here again, and we're here to select which upcoming sequels, comic book movies, and maybe even an original concept (or at least some franchises that haven't had a live action movie yet) are going to gross the most dollars in the U.S. box office. Hello listeners! This week we're drafting in honor of Gilbert Gottfried, so hopefully you're reading this description entirely in his voice. As before when there's been a celebrity death, we like to take a moment to think back on their career and the way they've influenced pop culture by drafting in a field or genre they're known for. In Gottfried's case, he was particularly known for his blue comedy so we decided to step on some rakes today and draft the dirtiest jokes ever told (or at least recorded!) So get ready for some awkwardness and some creative editing, then let us know which jokes you think did the best job walking the line between shock and comedy!

Hello listeners! We're two decade worth of television into this century, and that got us thinking what is the cream of the crop so far? But in What's On Draft fashion we also wanted to add a wrinkle to give us a little more diversity in our picks. So we're drafting the best TV shows of the 21st century, but the twist is once you take a show nothing else from that channel/network/streaming service/platform can be drafted. So if someone drafts the greatest show ever based on an insurance commercial about prehistoric humanoids in the modern era with 2007's Cavemen then all other ABC shows are off the table. Hello listeners! This week we're drafting... us? Cameron put together a game for his birthday to see who knew him the best and we invited some of his friends (and former guests on the show!) on to play. Provided lists of movies, tv shows, and fast food restaurants that Cameron had privately ranked everyone drafted two from each category. The higher the picks were on Cameron's rankings, the better your team fared. Listen in and see what this episode makes you think about Cameron's taste in content, food... and friends!

Hello listeners; this week we're continuing to resolve our various technical issues that have been delaying episodes, but we've got one (barely) out in time for Oscars season for you here! We're doing a fantasy style draft of the Academy Award nominated films trying to grab the movies that will win the most awards, but we're putting a slight limitation on it - each nomination a film has counts for $1, and our teams of five cannot exceed a $20 budget, so a selection of The Power of the Dog in the first round would mean the drafter is putting 60% of their budget behind it. What's our strategy based on this rule? And which films do we think will make the most of their nominations? Listen in to find out!

It's Draft... What's On, Draft and this episode is shaken, not stirred, because we're once again doing Hollywood's job for them by casting the next James Bond. Yes, that's right, we continue our tried and true tradition of bringing you news that was topical when we recorded but old hat by the time the episode is produced and released (now that everyone won't shut up about sand worms and spice!) We each draft 5 potential 007 picks and then play a game of James Bond trivia - for each question about the franchise that we miss the other two get to knock one of our bonds off the list. Heyyyy Jude (maybe we have a listener named Jude) and other listeners! This week we're trying to put together the best album we can for you to listen to, but we're only looking for songs that have a person's name in the title. Think My Sharona or Annie's Song. We added a little more difficulty to ourselves by blocking picks both by artist and by letter - so if somebody drafted My Sharona, nobody else could take any other song where the name in the title starts with an S. What did we come up with under these limitations? Listen in and let us know which album you'd most like to listen to!

Hello listeners! In this clip we're checking in on our 2021 movie draft to see what movies are really pulling their weight at the box office, what movies are no longer even coming out this year, and, most importantly, who is technically in second place as of right now.

Hello everybody! A few weeks ago the tallest and longest running late night host hung up his microphone for good (to go off and do a different type of show.) It's the last passing of the torch to the new crop of hosts and for those of us who grew up watching Late Night it's not a torch we wanted passed, damnit. But in this episode we're looking back on Conan's career and celebrating it by drafting the late night staple that Conan mastered and innovated above all else: the remote segment. What goes into making the best remote segment? In what era did Conan have our most favorites? How many Jordan Schlansky remotes make the cut? Listen in and find out!

Hello listeners! We're back from a week off to celebrate the opening of the Tokyo Summer Olympics (or, at least, what's left of it after pandemic safety protocols.) Hello listeners! A few days ago Nomadland was named the winner of Best Picture at the Academy Awards. We took a list of the past 40 years of winners from 1980's Ordinary People to 2020's Parasite and each drafted a collection of 10 films. Which list of films would you most like to watch? Hello listeners! This week we're discussing the topic of "twin" movies - movies that come out in close proximity to each other with very similar plots (Dante's Peak/Volcano, White House Down/Olympus Has Fallen, etc.). For this draft we have a list of movies that you can follow along with and we go in two groups: we each take three movies off the list, and then we each take three movies from those that were paired with a drafted pick - i.e., if one person takes Dante's Peak eventually someone will have to take Volcano. Do we prioritize the best films or avoiding the worst leftovers? Listen in, and let us know which of the films in these pairs you prefer!

This week has us thinking about Valentine's Day... and specifically how none of us care that much about Valentine's Day. So we decided to bring a slate of holidays to the table that we do care about. We're officially back in full for the new year! To kick things off we're performing our annual movie draft - we're each taking 10 films, and after they've all had their theatrical runs we'll tally the top 7 earners for each drafter to see who pulled in the most at the box office. That's right, we're not looking for the best, most artistic, or most meaningful movies of the year - we're just looking at who made the most cold, hard cash. The movie draft is something we've done for a while that long pre-dates the pod, but this year has a lot of new wrinkles with movie release dates still being in a state of flux. This episode is the first 15 picks of the draft, and we'll be back next week with the final 15. Which films do you think will pull in the most money? Did anything go too low or was egregiously omitted in this episode? What are you most excited to watch? Listen in and let us know!

Welcome to 2021, listeners! We're easing into 2021 with some non-draft bonus content. First, we're updating on our New Year's Resolutions from the previous draft and getting things organized. Then we're recapping our 2020 movie draft. We never released the audio because, well... a total of six movies we drafted were actually theatrically released last year. But we talk about our favorite things we did watch (whether they were released in 2020 or not), what we're most excited about of the things that were bumped to 2021, and what we think the movie-going landscape is going to look like in the near and distance future. Merry Christmas and happy holidays listeners! This week we're in the gifting spirit... particularly the spirit of gifting ourselves. Hello everybody! In this week's episode we are talking movies, specifically movies that we think deserve a sequel. We each draft five movies and then give our idea for what a sequel might look like - some have an interesting plot point to continue, some are an interesting universe that deserves some more exploration, and some were movies we felt like had an interesting premise but weren't as successful and could use the reboot treatment. Which set of films would you be most excited to see get greenlit but Hollywood? And what movies do you want a sequel for that we didn't mention? Listen in and let us know!

Tonight, the window for casting a vote for the U.S. president will end, and while we wait for the long and needlessly complicated process to tabulate all the results, we were thinking - how much better off would be if we could pluck our leaders off of the silver screen? In this Election Day special, we're taking a fictional characters to be the president and then drafting their cabinet for them. Come for our predictions on the 2020 election, stay for a debate over whether Snowball from Animal Farm would be constitutionally eligible to serve as acting president in the even everyone above him in the line of succession was incapacitated.

We've got an extra spooky extra episode for you this week! Maybe the three most unqualified hosts for talking horror films draft our own horror scenarios, taking a setting, villain, booby trap, and supernatural phenomenon to build a dastardly plot for anyone to face. We round things out by drafting a hero to face down the other two scenarios. Which hero would survive the longest? Would any hero make it through unscathed? How intelligent does a giant squid need to be to qualify for villain status? Listen in and let us know!

In this episode, we take people from all over the world to send to Middle Earth and see if they could be as successful as ol' Frodo at getting the Ring into Mount Doom. This was the first episode of the podcast we recorded, so we hadn't quite settled on the layout (or nicer microphones) but we think you'll still enjoy it. Which team would you most trust with a cross-country quest to save the kingdoms of men, elves, and dwarves? And did you know any of our international picks before we drafted them? In this episode, Cameron and Michael are joined by special guest Preston for a very musical episode (though, not to get your hopes up, not an episode drafted entirely in song.) We take five famous musical groups - The Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, the Four Seasons, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Earth, Wind, and Fire - and take on the monumental task of replacing their famous front men with a modern pop song. Who makes a good Mick Jagger? Who would have the unique style and writing chops of Brian Wilson? Let us know what you think of our picks!

Inspired by the (U.S.) release of Tenet this week, we're taking a look at Christopher Nolan movies. The director is well known for working repeatedly with actors he's Caine-fortable (booing intensifies off stage) with, which got us thinking - what if the studios told him his next project had to be filled with completely new faces? We each give a pitch for a Nolan film (or for the archetypes Nolan likes to use in his films) and then take five cast members to co-star in our films. Which lineup would you most like to see work with Nolan? Let us know!

Most excellent listeners! Join us as we take on a draft topic inspired by the Bill & Ted movie franchise; if we had our own time travelling phone booth and wanted to take it for a spin to go see some live music, where (and when) would we go? We've got concerts lined up from big obvious names and some that may not make the top of "best concerts of all time" lists but have some personal connections to us. Or, we just like them a lot! Let us know which lineup of five concerts you would most like to see, and if there's anything you can't believe we didn't bring up.

We got a little excited with our Bill & Ted episode and ended up recording for over three hours. A lot of the conversation was cut to make the resulting episode length more manageable, and this is one of the clips that was taken out where we get into a conversation about grunge music and what it means to different generations. Enjoy!

In this episode, we take some inspiration from the comic page and the silver screen by drafting three super powers each to turn ourselves into a superhero. But, as they say, you should never meet your heroes... because sometimes they turn out to be comically inept; like in this case, because we spent our final two picks assigning some very ridiculous limits to everybody's powers. Which superhero would be the best at saving a city even with their limitations? Were there more creative ways we should have limited someone's powers? Let us know!
