What's up, basketball trainers?
In our podcast episode today, I had a great conversation with Justin Wakefield, a basketball trainer and educator, where we explored a range of topics related to coaching and player development. We discussed the importance of having thick skin as an educator, effective techniques for teaching players of all ages, the ideal training schedule, and the concept of "your body is your level" in basketball. We even reflected on our experiences in industries like sales and hardwood flooring and how those lessons have influenced our coaching styles.
The conversation also touched on key themes like time management in training, using basketball as a tool for growth beyond the game, the importance of relationships and networking in the basketball community, and the different cultures of the sport in various markets. And towards the end, we emphasized the value of showing love, being a good person in the industry, and staying true to yourself through perseverance while building a successful training business.

What's up, basketball trainers?
It's been a while since our last episode. And so, we're back with a special podcast three-part series, where we'll dive deep into the business side of basketball training. This series will be split into three parts, with the first part airing today.
For the second time around, we're thrilled to have with us coaches Peter Danyliv, Tyler Leclerc, and Micah Lancaster. Together, we'll explore a range of topics, from shifting focus from NBA players to younger athletes, to the challenges of monetization and dealing with agencies. Tune in as we uncover the myths of training pros and share valuable insights on building a successful training business.
Part 1: Shifting Focus and Valuing Your Craft as a Basketball Trainer
In this first episode, we debunk the myth that training professional athletes is the ultimate marker of success, revealing the often low expectations many pros have for their training. The conversation highlights the shift from focusing on NBA players to developing younger athletes, emphasizing the importance of valuing your craft and getting paid what you're worth. We also stress that success as a trainer comes from building credibility and reputation in the community, rather than simply working with high-profile clients.
Takeaways:

Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in to the podcast. If you're a basketball trainer, I hope you find some valuable insights here.
SN: If you're watching online, don't mind the Disney shirt—I'm recording all at once, so yes, it's the same shirt from Monday. I'm really fascinated by Disney from a business perspective because they generate $60 billion a year and their stories resonate with both kids and adults. But today, I'm not here to talk about Disney.
Instead, I want to share something unorthodox: my interest in ants. I was observing ants recently and reflecting on Proverbs 6:6-8, which teaches about diligence and preparation. Ants work tirelessly without a boss, stockpiling food for winter. This proverb reminds us to adopt good habits now to avoid laziness and prepare for tougher times ahead.
I see a parallel between ants and us. Like ants, we can achieve much more together than alone. This is why I'm keen on finding another basketball training partner with flexible hours—it's like the difference between hunting rabbits and deer. Together, we can accomplish more and handle greater challenges. Preparing now, during the summer, by working hard and smart, ensures we can be at peace during the slower winter months.
I've learned that having a strong work ethic and smart strategies is key. Bill Gates once said that lazy people find the most efficient ways to do things, but that's not my approach. I believe in working hard first to work smart later.
So, let's build good habits now and be as focused and diligent as an ant colony. This idea also comes from an interesting article by Andrew Exposito on LinkedIn.
Let's learn from the ants and have a productive day! Talk to you next time!

What's up, basketball trainers?
In today's quick podcast, I want to share a challenge we're currently facing in our basketball training business, Hoops University. This season is usually peak time for us, with kids out of school, but we're not technically a higher learning institution despite our name. I recently realized, similar to how medical residents learn under supervision, we could adopt a similar model.
Instead of focusing solely on marketing and recruiting, our main constraint right now is having enough trainers to meet the demand. The idea is to transition from being owner-operators to just owners, by bringing in people who are eager to continue their basketball education under our guidance.
I've been thinking a lot about recruiting and training new trainers. Finding the right teammates can feel like college basketball again with the camaraderie and teamwork. However, it's crucial to ensure they meet our standards and are well-received by parents.
Inspired by Dan Martell's "Buy Back Your Time," I'm focusing on hiring to reclaim time, not just grow the business. This involves applying the 10-80-10 rule: handle the first 10%, delegate the middle 80%, and finish the final 10%. This approach allows us to focus on high-value tasks while ensuring our trainees get quality training.
My goal is to find the right fit and create a sustainable model that benefits both our trainers and business. Thanks for listening, and I hope you found this helpful! If you did, please share it with another trainer. See you next time!

I was catching up with Daniel Fowler, reminiscing about our basketball days and how we've transitioned into new careers. We agreed that reliability and camaraderie are key in pickup games, values we learned at Furman University.
Daniel also shared his journey from being a basketball player to a financial advisor, highlighting the challenges and opportunities he faced.
Hearing about his intense financial exam studies and the personal financial habits he's developed as an advisor was inspiring, showing how the discipline and integrity from our basketball days continue to shape our lives.
Takeaways from this podcast episode:
I hope this podcast gave you some value, not just in the basketball training industry but life, in general, too. 'Til our next podcast!
Hope you guys are having a great week so far :)

What's up, basketball trainers? In today's episode, I discussed two intriguing topics: the similarities between pickup basketball and running a basketball training business, and a thought experiment about the replaceability of coaches versus trainers.
Reflecting on my early morning pickup game, where we lost by two points, I realized how both scenarios involve performing without an audience, emphasizing personal standards over external validation. This mirrors our backend work in training, where we strive to over-deliver despite fatigue or life's challenges.
Competing in pickup games is akin to our business approach—focusing on personal goals rather than competing against others, ensuring we provide high-quality training regardless of external pressures.
I also delved into the debate of whether it's easier to replace a coach or a trainer. While coaches might seem easier to replace due to their higher teachability and the less rigorous demands of running practices, trainers offer a more specialized skill set and often command higher fees.
Parents usually prefer seeing their children play in games, giving AAU organizations a slight advantage. However, the scrutiny and churn rate in AAU teams can be daunting, which is why I moved away from it.
Despite these nuances, I believe trainers are harder to replace due to their specialized skills and the high standards we maintain in our training sessions.
If you found this episode valuable, consider leaving a review to keep this podcast going. Your feedback is essential and much appreciated.
Have a good weekend everybody!

What's up, basketball trainers?
I recently recorded one of my quickest podcasts ever, where I shared some thoughts on organic social media and how it intertwines with paid advertising. Lately, I've been reflecting on the importance of balancing day trading attention and leveraging platforms like Google My Business, Instagram, and Facebook. I'm learning that quality content tailored to each platform's audience—like parents on Facebook and athletes on Instagram—can effectively drive sales.
Additionally, I'm considering how to maximize the long-term benefits of platforms like YouTube, where content has an enduring impact compared to the fast-paced feeds of Instagram and Facebook. Our strategy involves prospecting through social media posts, using high-performing posts for Facebook ads to get the best return on investment.
Inspired by advice from Coach P and others, I see the value in creating and curating engaging content for our specific audience. This approach, though requiring more time and resources, is proving to be a valuable prelude to running paid ads.
Ultimately, our success hinges on our ability to create compelling content, acknowledging that curating ideas from others can enrich our offerings and better serve our audience. And organic content, especially during busy seasons, is key to building a repertoire of successful videos that can enhance our advertising efforts.
I hope this podcast has provided you some insights today. More podcast episodes for you guys soon. Have a good weekend everybody!

What's up, basketball trainers?
Summertime is a busy period for us trainers, and unlike last summer, I'm aiming to work fewer hours while making more money. I believe it's crucial to give 100% to our trainees, even if we want to reduce our workload. Scarcity and urgency are still effective strategies in our business, and although we see some drop-offs due to travel and other sports, there's also an influx of new customers.
Right now, we're focusing on reducing expenses while maintaining the same number of clients. I'm revisiting the book "Gym Launch" and applying principles like offering fewer sessions, slightly increasing prices, billing on a 28-day cycle, and changing the teacher-to-athlete ratio.
Additionally, I'm looking at where we can cut 20% of our expenses without losing customers, which has been a fascinating exercise. Facebook ads didn't perform well in May, so we're pausing them for June, but Google My Business has been incredibly helpful. I'm also excited to apply strategies from Gary V's new book and get more advice on social media content from Coach P. We're using YouTube more to boost our search engine ranking, which is already number one in our area.
The summer season is a peak time for many of us, so it's crucial to maximize our availability. We recently had a mix of trainees coming and going, and we're tracking their behavior closely to use that data for future decisions.
Last week was hectic with a Nike camp, so I took some time to analyze numbers and make informed decisions. I'll keep you posted on our progress, and I hope these insights are helpful for you.
Y'all have a great day!

What's up, basketball trainers? Hope y'all had a meaningful Memorial Day weekend!
As I get ready to assist with this Nike camp, I wanted to share some thoughts from a recent Instagram conversation with a basketball trainer about what it takes to be successful in basketball training. The answer is quite subjective; it depends on one's definition of success. For some trainers, success means having the flexibility to train a few times a week while keeping most of the profits. Others might own their facilities, managing hefty monthly fees, and love the challenge of a larger operation. Some trainers focus solely on online training and do quite well.
Personally, as the owner-operator of Hoops University, I am now more focused on recruiting teammates to help with training sessions rather than trainees or gym space. It's a grind and a hustle, but success varies for everyone based on their business model and goals.
What I've learned is that figuring out your business model is crucial. Some trainers integrate training into a team model, while others maintain separate training and team structures. I'll be discussing the pros and cons of these models with another trainer soon, possibly dedicating a full podcast episode to it.
Right now, the focus might be on different aspects like prospecting for trainees, finding trainers, or managing Facebook ads. With June's busy season upon us, balancing operational capacity with demand is key. There will always be churn, especially with athletes sticking to AAU teams, but it's all part of the exciting and busy journey of basketball training.
Thanks for listening, and I'm off to the camp!

What's up, basketball trainers?
In this podcast episode, I dive into the world of business numbers, focusing on the concept of lifetime value (LTV) and how it relates to advertising, especially through Facebook.
My goal is to create a "money machine" that returns three to four dollars for every dollar spent. I reflect on my experience training kids from sixth grade to college and how understanding the cost of acquiring a customer through Facebook ads is crucial. It's not just about minimizing costs but also about acquiring high-quality customers who stay longer. I illustrate the complexity of calculating LTV by emphasizing the importance of considering the actual costs to provide a service, rather than a simplified formula of price times the number of purchases.
Tracking these numbers has made me realize the potential of focusing on private training clients who pay more and stay longer. The insights from LTV calculations have helped me determine how much to spend on acquiring new customers and how to grow our business efficiently.
Despite the numerous factors that affect costs and customer behavior, such as seasonality and changing expenses, the key is to aim for predictability and retention. By continually tracking data and adjusting strategies, we can enhance our business operations and better serve our clients, ultimately aiming for a higher return on investment in our advertising efforts.
Hope this helps you with your training business. Feel free to share your thoughts on today's episode on my IG account and I'll make sure to exchange ideas with you!
Have a great day everyone!

What's up, basketball trainers?
I've been reflecting on the recent AAU tournament pricing issues. I noticed a tournament only offering day passes at $32.12, which sparked my curiosity about pricing elasticity in our industry. As basketball trainers or business owners, we have the flexibility to adjust our prices and gauge market demand. This pricing issue is particularly relevant now, considering my recent podcast discussing fairness and truth in these matters. Whether you're a parent or a tournament director, I hope you can see my effort to empathize with both sides and recognize that AAU offers benefits beyond just the basketball experience.
From a business perspective, I understand the challenges of running AAU tournaments and the tough decisions regarding pricing. The rising costs and the need to balance profits with customer satisfaction are significant hurdles. Prices for AAU tournaments have indeed increased significantly compared to when I played, and this has sparked debates about fairness and potential price gouging. While it’s not illegal, the economic pressures on both sides are evident.
As business owners, we must navigate this delicate balance and test our pricing strategies to find a sustainable model without alienating our customers. This exploration into pricing elasticity, understanding customer behavior, and making informed decisions will be crucial for our ongoing success in this competitive landscape.

What's up, basketball trainers? I just got back from a mini retirement, or what some might call a vacation, and it got me thinking about how I work to grow my training business.
I've been trying to reframe my mind to understand that retirement doesn’t mean stopping work altogether, but rather focusing on the most exciting projects.
One thing I highly recommend is a time and energy audit—track your activities in 15-minute increments for two weeks, highlight what energizes or drains you, and mark how productive each task is. This has been eye-opening for me, helping me see what to delegate and how to maximize my efficiency.
Check more on this time and energy audit concept from Dan Martell's Buy Back Your Time and feel free to share your thoughts on my IG account.

Yes, our Facebook accounts (personal and business) got hacked thru the Ad platform. Two problems because of this:
Compared to IG, it's in Facebook where our customers can swipe their cards to pay for our services
We've got a fair amount of leads from Facebook and we're gearing towards ramping up the advertising spins to get more customers
But, we're also taking this unfortunate event as a blessing in disguise because:
This gives us the idea to explore more on other marketing strategies such as Google Ads and there's nothing wrong with refocusing back on doing email marketing and other Gorilla marketing tactics which have been proven effective before the internet era
We are reminded to make sure to get email addresses, phone numbers and other contact info from our clients in case we lose access to our social media and other online accounts that we use in marketing our training business
May it be paid advertising or organic ways (flyers, business cards, etc.) to market the business, as long as we see it effective, then why not?
Our takeaways:
Be creative and diversify your marketing tactics for your training business.
Don't forget to secure all your social media and other online accounts all the time!
Hope this helps you out! Busy season is here, work hard, have fun!

First episode of the new year! If there is one thing that you should consider doing this year, It is reading one book…--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/basketballtobusiness/message
A lot of trainers have been recommending this to me and I don’t often say a book is a must-read, but "Profit First" definitely has earned it. This book focuses not only on the heath of your business, but making sure you have your ratios intact.
Also with Profit First, similar to the so-called "Envelope System", you've got pockets of:
- Operating Expenses (i.e. gym rental, teammate fees, marketing fee, etc.)
- Profit Account
- Tax Account
- Income Account
- Owner's Compensation Account
So, anyone running a basketball business should listen to this and I guarantee that it will change your perspective on your business' finances going into 2023.

During this podcast you'll learn how important paying attention is with running a business, either it being outside of sports or involved in the sports community.
You'll also learn about how businesses in the sports community such as gyms, can use the key factors of attention to increase their profit and numbers towards their gym. During this time kids are looking to train in their respected sports, I explain how certain events could help improve the gyms revenue but also give value towards the kids and help them in the sport of their choice.

As hoopers, we compare ourselves. And you know what they say, the comparison is the thief of joy.
But, it also makes us the competitors that we are.
I couldn't think of a better way to bring back the podcast after a long hiatus than interviewing a role model of mine since I was a kid. Marshall Moses is a professional in every meaning of the word.
In this interview, you'll listen to an artist, a professional basketball player, a husband, father, and learn some GOLD that will bless your SOUL. Interview Notes:
2:41: Marshall and Myson talk about Marshall's upbringing and how it shaped him in his journey in pursuing basketball, music and other things. Talks about moving out at a young age to be in a better position to be more successful in his hoop dreams
5:55: the two delve into his recruiting process and how and why he chose OSU
10:50: Marshall explains how his "failure" as a freshman actually was the starting point to a lot of his future success and how important mindset is in whatever a person wants to be and "who" you are
13:53: Myson sparks a deep convo relating mindset in basketball and how it relates to your mindset in life with a simple statement "you aren't the 30 point game and you not the 0 point game"
19:17: Myson hones in on the topic of love that Marshall mentions and how it ties into his 20/20 vision for 2020. Marshall dives in on mind control and influence, God being you and in you, etc...at 20:57 Myson has some confusion which leads to Marshall explaining in more depth or a "rant"
26:24: Focusing on what led to this unorthodox way of thinking Marshall starts to tie it all together after Myson asks when the journey he is on now started
29:36: Myson steers the conversation towards the misconceptions of the overseas ball and how Marshall's own challenges with landing the right gig and how he finds "peace" within those challenges
32:42: Marshall clarifies any challenges and how you have to overcome them and have the right mindset, to any aspiring overseas ballers a must listen
39:02: What does Marshall identify with? He expounds on every level and brings the convo full circle in a way that everyone should hear, even if it's to disagree
44:40: Conversation closes with the relationship between habits and how you identify with yourself becoming the YOU that you are creating. He talks briefly on the relationship with Dez Bryant as well.

No cap, you'll love this interview. I sit back and let Dorian Lee talk.
He's the Founder of Bball101 Elite Player Development based out of Atlanta, GA.
He's definitely one of the OG's (in my eyes) in the training space. He's got a ton of knowledge to share if you're in the process of starting or growing your basketball training business, so make sure you listen up and SHARE this with someone.
2:00 - The job that helped Dorian transition into training full-time after losing $3million.
9:00 - How did Dorian Lee's corporate background help him build the business he has today?
27:00 - What advice would Dorian give trainers who are building a business and caring for a family?
38:00 - The comments Dorian made about Drew Hanlen
1:20:00 - Dorian's ultimate goal in life

Disclaimer - The skill of trading items of unequal value will get you what you want without it costing as much... or anything. For me, it’s helped me get more help and more teammates. What it DOESN’T do is guarantee retention. Nothing does... but follow-up and inspecting what you expect helps. Nonetheless, trading items of unequal value in my opinion is the quickest way we can get what we want without having to pay nearly as much. Hopefully you experience its benefits.

Do you remember the player that always sprinted on the court during pickup? They set screens, sprinted back on defense, and ran the floor, but never knew exactly what they were doing? That’s how it feels in business at times (at least to me), until I/you take a step back to create space and think about our purpose and offensive philosophy, we won’t get the results we want later in the game.

Recently, I ran a Facebook ad in about a 50-75 mile radius of my location.
I was curious to see what basketball parents wanted for their kid when it came to basketball.
Some of these answers are expected.
The trick here is not to hear these parent's answers and say "I know that."
The trick is to hear these parent's and ask "how well do I communicate that."
What you'll learn in this episode:
What parents want
How using the pain points and desires of parents can help you get more results in your writing, social media, and other content

I have the privilege to talk to some pretty successful basketball trainers.
Ones who have a successful family life, successful basketball training business, and...monetarily, they aren't hurting for cash.
But, the only reason they're able to do so much, yet not seem so busy is because of a S.Y.S.T.E.M. that saves time, energy, and money.
That what a S.Y.S.T.E.M is!

Why parent's buy is more important than how you sell.
It's taking me a while to get this through my box head.
So, I ran a research advertisement asking parents a few questions about their child's goals, fears, and trouble.
In this episode, you'll learn those answers, and even more importantly, what to do with them!

People use systems for one reason usually. To give a little more freedom to do what they love to do.
And freedom to do the things that actually produce revenue and give enjoyment.
I'm really preaching to myself on this one.
Hoops Institute is hiring, so we have been documenting every single step of our processes so there's no confusion on what needs to be done.

One of the biggest hold-ups with basketball trainers is marketing.
A lot of them just don't think it is worth their time.
They usually justify the fact that they don't want to learn marketing or are scared of social media by saying it's not worth their time and that word of mouth works fine.
Listen to this episode to hear why that is the wrong thinking, and two ways that you can easily start to use word of mouth online to get more training clients.

I haven't met many trainers with an abundant mindset like Padraig O'Brien. He's a world-traveling entrepreneur and the founder of Give n Go Hoops.
He grew up in a small town in Minnesota where he got his start as a player developer working late nights for next to nothing, living in a house with no heat and $650/month to spend.
Fast forward to today and Padraig is traveling around the world to places like London, Shanghai, and Spain.
