Robbie grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, one of the largest urban areas in the world. He did not hunt. Guns were banned. Hunting was just a bunch of stories and antlers on the wall. But, he had a hunting past that he could not deny. From that heritage grew an idea —Blood Origins, a way to connect the past with the present.
“When I look at the liberties afforded to you in the United States of America, I consider it incomprehensible. I am going to go out on a limb and say that this liberty is likely lost on most of you, that it is very often taken for granted. I say that only from a perspective of someone who came from a place where there was no opportunity to connect with something that pulsed within me.” —Robbie Kroger

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I sit down with Jonathan O’Dell, Small Game Biologist for the Arizona Game and Fish Department and Sam Soholt, Professional Photographer (a.k.a. the guy who bought a school bus). This is the first installment of a series of episodes I made during my hunt with Randy Newberg, in Southern Arizona. Southern Arizona is AWESOME! It feels exotic, but you’re right here in the good ole’ US of A. Arizona is the convergence of all four North American Deserts which makes for the highest amount of biological diversity in North America. We discuss my Coatimundi attack, Sandhill Cranes (and how it’s my new favorite meat), Giant Jack Rabbits, Javelina, Quail, Waterfowl, and more. We talk about hunting seasons, the cost and how you really should be bringing your kids to Arizona to hunt.
Is there something in our DNA that is most self-actualized when we are hunting? And if so, what is it? I would argue that there are few activities on this planet that cause the human being to enter the “present moment” with more force and completeness than in that moment of truth just before we take an animal’s life. And hunting is more than that--there’s something spiritual in the harvest of an animal’s flesh and bone so that we may live--and not only live but so that we may thrive. Discomfort; frozen hands and feet, sleeping on the ground, hiking countless miles, denying the negative voices in your head, schooling your adrenaline, overcoming doubts, honing weapons skills; feeling nature--reading animal behavior; predicting the wind--being both predator and prey at the same time; these things awaken ethereal human senses that all-too-often lay dormant in the heart of the modern man. If these things are true, one-dimensional statements like, “I hunt for meat,” do not even scratch the surface for why we do what we do. Our message needs to evolve; because it’s deep than what we’ve been saying. Today, I visit with my friend, Adam Janke, from The Journal Of Mountain Hunting. It’s always a pleasure to visit with Adam because he’s continually challenging my ideas and preconceived notions. I hope this episode gets you thinking about why you hunt and how you share your story--because everybody has one and how it’s told can make all the difference.

Hello friends. Today’s episode of Gritty Bowmen is pretty special, I think. My guests are Logan Ross and Aaron Hitchins from Rockhouse Motion. The first time I met Aaron and Logan I instantly liked them. Logan is, perhaps, one of the kindest and most thoughtful human beings I’ve ever met. And Aaron Hitchins has a sharp wit that reveals a deeply intelligent mind. To me, Logan is as conscientious as a person can be--a human trait that I deeply admire. While Aaron is the counterweight in their relationship; providing constancy, realism, and acceptance for what is. A year ago, Logan told us her story. She was new to hunting--even opposed to hunting before she met Aaron. But then… she learned about hunting; Logan has always been conscientious about where her food came from--and with that as a foundation, she embarked on a bowhunting journey with Aaron. Bowhunting is HARD. And Logan failed at it despite her best efforts. At the end of the 2016 hunting season--Logan still could not answer the question, “can I kill an animal--and if I do, will I be okay with it?”
Well... the 2017 hunting season has come to a close… and Logan is ready to answer to those questions. I hope this episode inspires you like it inspires me… to be a better person. To be more conscientious in how I hunt and live. Please take the time to invite your non-hunting friends and family to listen to Logan’s story. Because it matters--it’s the oft-unspoken side of the hunter’s heart and soul

Hello friends. Today on Gritty, my guest is Ben O’brien, Hunting Marketing Manager at YETI Coolers and previously, the Executive Editor at Petersen’s Bowhunting. AND, something I’m excited about… Ben has launched his own podcast called, The Hunting Collective. Ben seems older to me than his young age suggests… He’s a young chap with an old soul. What I like most about Benny--he’s not afraid to speak his mind; even when it’s not popular. At the same time--Ben doesn’t think he’s got all the answers--he’s a man open to new ideas and I like that about him.
Recently, Ben took a poll on Instagram. The poll asked, “should hunters get rid of the grip and grin pic?” As you can imagine, this question sparked some serious debate. And naturally, I had to ask Ben about it on the podcast. It’s okay, because Ben’s a deep thinker--he can get all philosophical on you--in a good way. He’s been some places--seen some things. He’s not naive to the broad world outside of hunting. It’s his job at YETI to make sure that hunting is represented in a positive light.
In today’s modern world, we all have a voice. How do we use it? Join us as we explore this topic and more on today’s Gritty Bowmen podcast.
“Never underestimate the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us. - Wilma Rudolph
PART TWO- Today on Gritty, we talk about an insidious, silent killer; a life-sucking force that people naively and foolishly welcome into their lives. A life-wrecking force that the fast-changing modern age has thrust upon the modern human mind. This insidious killer is STRESS. Today, I’m joined by the deep-thinking, intense and amazing, Doctor Hillary Lampers. She explains stress in clinical and colloquial terms. She talks about how our bodies and brains are all that we really have and how we should treat them. Human beings have evolved to thrive under stress--we need stress. But today’s modern stress is different--it’s a different animal from the kind of stress human beings NEED. Find out the difference and more about how to live “better” on today’s episode. You can learn more from Doctor Hillary’s website at HuntHarvestHealth.com.

Today on Gritty Bowmen we hang out with friend Donnie Vincent. I could sit an listen to Donnie tell stories for hours. He’s an explorer, biologist, conservationist, and sportsman. And a gifted weaver of adventurous tales in wild and remote places. When Donnie’s storytelling transcends the spoken word and comes to life in the form of cinematic film--it’s incredible. His films change hearts and minds. And films like, “Who We Are,” “The River’s Divide,” and “Terra Nova,” have permanently changed how I view the world and the hunt. So sit back and enjoy the show. And then, if you haven’t already, support Donnie by getting his film’s at www.donnievincent.com.
Those who know me, know that I love a good hunting story. And I’m no Donnie Vincent but Gritty Bowmen has its own brand of filmmaking--it’s kinda Gritty… it’s a bit unpolished, it usually has a few smart-aleck comments, some shaky footage, some adventure and it reminds you of the hunts you go on with your buddies.
So with that preamble, I have an announcement to make. On Thursday, February 8th at the Western Hunt Expo in Salt Lake City, I’ll be showing my latest Gritty film on the big screen. And it’s not just my film that’ll be showing, my good friend Cole Kramer will also be featuring his YETI film from Nepal that night as well. There will be Gritty Bingo, Prizes, Raffles, Giveaways and much more! My good friends at Sitka Gear, YETI, HOYT, MTN OPS, and Leupold Optics are helping to make this event a fun one! Raffle proceeds go to the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance.
Please, if you want to support Gritty and you’re coming to the Western Hunt Expo, please go to www.mtnops.com/gritty and get tickets now.
Please spread the word--invite your friends and family, and come see what a Gritty Movie Night is all about.
Here’s a 30-second trailer for the film--check it out.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we sit down at the ATA show with Eva Shockey-Brent. Eva became a Mother about a year ago and we discuss the delicate balance of motherhood, hunting and marriage. What it's like to travel on an airplane with a baby and her new book "Taking Aim".
Hey friends! Today on Gritty I’m hanging with my good buddy Tim Burnett--the SOLO HNTR brand OG. We recorded this podcast at my house after returning from our Oklahoma Whitetail hunt. Tim is one of my favorite people to hang out with. He’s gonna have fun, but he’s not gonna talk your ear off--in fact, you kinda have to drag words out of him. So it was not a surprise to me when I found out that Tim created a podcast for the SOLO NATION with more than 15 recorded episodes and I didn’t know about it. I’m all about more SOLO HNTR. If you’re like me, go and subscribe to the SOLO HNTR podcast and get some!
So here it is… a final Oklahoma Whitetail podcast recording session with Mr. SOLO himself, before he road off into the sunset in the aged and crippled Solorado.
On today's podcast I sit down with Jason Price & Dallas Hemeyer of Hunt The Experience. The guys share some harrowing experiences flying on bush planes and more than one near death experience. They talk about their mission to share "The Experience" of hunting, rather than focusing on a hunter. They share how hunting all over the world has changed their perspective on life and how happiness doesn't come from having more stuff. You can find them on social media here: YouTube The Experience Facebook The Experience Instagram @hunttheexperience @DallasHemeyer @mjasonprice
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we sit down with my good friends from Born and Raised Outdoors; Trent & Trevor Fisher & Kody Kellom. In this interview we talk about their Land of the Free Elk Hunting Collaboration Project. The project consisted of a video series of 50 days hunting in 5 different states in collaboration with HUSH, ELK101, PURE ELEVATION, PHELPS GAME CALLS & RYAN CALLAGHAN.
They showcase public land hunting and issues surrounding land transfers across the Western US.
They talk about the success of the switch from DVD's to YouTube and how they became more connected with their fan base.
Today on Gritty, I give you part 2 of the Texas Whitetail hunt--first part is episode 297. A group of us were invited to Sloane’s family ranch in Texas; which includes John Barklow and Chris Derek from Sitka Gear. AND Sloane Brown from Backbone Media. AND my good friend, Casey Harbertson, partner and owner of MTN OPS.
On this episode we switch gears from survival and technical clothing systems to hunting whitetails in Texas. It’s just a group of buddies sitting around the hunting cabin talking about the week’s antics and adventures.
“There wouldn’t be no Alamo, No Cowboys in the Superbowl… No Lonsome Dove, no “Yellow Rose”, If it wasn’t for Texas. -George Strait
You’ve been out hunting all-day. And you roll into a truck-stop diner. You’re still in your camo duds and the waitress comes over and says, “you been huntin’?” And you say, “ya…” And she says, “did ya catch anything?” And then you laugh a little and you say, “nah, not yet.” But you don’t bother explaining that hunters don’t “catch” deer. This little scenario has played out a million times across the civilized world--it’s a universal experience that nearly every hunter can relate to. Why do people use the word caught? After all, deer huntin’ ain’t fly-fishing--there’s no catch-and-release; deer hunters hunt for keeps. And what’s another thing… my wife still says deers--with an “s.” No matter how many times I tell her that the plural for deer is still just deer she can’t seem to bring herself to drop the “s.” Did you know we also have elks where we live in Colorado?
Well, today’s guests are the boys from Catchin’ Deers. AND TRUST ME, you don’t want to miss this one! These guys are the epitome of what I call “The Hunting Buddy Fraternity.” This podcast consists of a lot of heckling, camaraderie, trash talk, brotherhood, and laughter. My guests are Mike and Bud Fisher, and Austin Casselman. We talk about how Catchin’ Deers got started--the many hours of work and in-depth planning that DID NOT go into creating this brand. We talk hockey. We talk hockey retirement; apparently Mike played hockey in the NHL for 17 years and he was kind of a big deal. Look him up--because that’s probably the only way you’re gonna hear about it because Mike doesn’t really talk. But that’s okay, his brother, Bud talks enough for both of them. Austin is currently suffering from Adult Onset Hunting Syndrome--in other words, he’s been newly inducted into the hunting fraternity. Ironically, he’s also the person who asked, “did ya’ll catch anything?” Which pretty much makes him the mastermind, genius behind the Catchin’ Deers brand--no matter what Mike and Bud tell you. Enjoy this one! And if you like what you hear, get yourself a Catchin’ Deers hat and shirt. And follow’em on social media--and also, bombard them with useless new ideas for more awesome clothing ideas that’ll keep us laughing. Here’s Catchin’ Deers.
Have you ever jumped off a building? Have you been on the US Archery Team or competed in more than 120 professional archery events worldwide? Have you ever been shot at? For that matter, have you ever been shot. Today on Gritty I’m joined by two remarkable human beings. There are few people who can lay claim to the accomplishments that these men have achieved in their respective areas of expertise. My guests today are John Dudley, Professional Archer and passionate bowhunter, and Andy Stumpf, retired Navy Seal and the man who jumps off buildings. John Dudley started shooting professionally in 1997 and has competed all over the world. John has 45 Career Top 3 Professional Finishes. Here are just a few of Johns professional accomplishments: APA Rookie of the Year IBO National Champion (2x) NABH National Champion AZ International Gold Medalist European Grand Prix Gold Medalist World Field Championship Bronze In short, John knows how to shoot a bow. And more than that, John has knack for teaching his craft to others. Andy Stumpf executed hundreds of combat operations throughout the world over his 17-year career in the military. He was medically retired in June of 2013. His awards and decorations include 5 Bronze Star Medals (four with valor). The Purple Heart, The Joint Service Commnedation Medal. The Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal with Valor, Three Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medals, Two Combat Action Ribbons, and The Presidential Unit Citation. In 2015 he set two world records after jumping from 36,500 feet and flying over 18 miles in a wingsuit in an effort to raise 1 million dollars for the Navy Seal Foundation. Okay, there you have it folks—these two gentlemen are unique. Each have excelled in their chosen endeavors. They’re both able to govern their fear, manage their heart rate, and perform under extreme pressure. And we talk about this and much more on today’s podcast. It’s good stuff! If you like what you hear, do me a favor and support each of these guys by following them on social media and subscribing to their respective podcasts, Nockon-Podcast and Cleared Hot. Enjoy the show!
Have you ever been charged by a bear? Have you ever been forced to use bear spray or a firearm in defense of your life? Well, my good friend Ryan Lampers was charged by a bear while tracking his archery bull elk through the bloody snow. This tale will get you thinking and could perhaps even save your life someday. After you finish this podcast, do me a favor and go follow Ryan in Instagram at sthealthyhunter. And subscribe to his excellent Hunt Harvest Health podcast! Without further ado, here’s Ryan’s story…
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we talk with Cam Hanes and Adam Greentree at 2018 ATA Show.
Today on Gritty I am joined by my good friend Ryan Lampers, aka sthealthy hunter AND owner, host, and cohost of the Hunt Harvest Health Podcast. Ryan is a modest, quiet guy who kills mature old animals on public land hunts across the West. Today on Gritty, Ryan shares some of his tactics for elk hunting. I feel like Ryan is a treasure box of useful information just waiting to be opened. Today on Gritty we pluck a few gold nuggets out of his treasure box and the information is worth its weight in gold. I hope Ryan’s stories and tactics help you on your next elk hunt--I know I’ll be putting a few of his strategies to use next season.
Today on Gritty, my guest is my good friend Phil Mendoza. I’ve been attending a few of his beginner bowhunter and bow tuning classes at his Denver archery shop--No Limits Archery. If you live in the area and you’re new to archery or just want to learn how to work on your own bow or build your own arrows, checkout Phil’s classes--they’re great. On today’s podcast, Phil and I discuss hunting mistakes--primarily, mistakes made in the final moments of a shot opportunity. Cody Eardley wrote a great article in the January 2018, Bugle Magazine (put out by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation--which you should become a member of if you aren’t already) and the article is titled, Situation Ethics. The article is a good one and it got Phil and I talking about ethics, shot selection and closing the deal in the final moments of a hunt. I enjoy talking to Phil because I always learn. Phil is an extremely talented hunter and archer. He’s a Train To Hunt champion. And he’s owner and mastermind of the Alpha Bowhunting Challenge. And as discussed on an earlier podcast, Phil wrote a mini book titled, “Targeting Buck Fever.” Train to Hunt and The Alpha Bowhunting Challenge are competitive events designed to help hunters hone the ability to make good decisions and good shots at the proverbial “moment of truth” while under extreme pressure. So join Phil and I for a frank and open discussion on mistakes we’ve made, things we’ve learned and our Situation Ethics. Big thanks to Cody Eardley and Bugle Magazine for providing relevant, educative, thought provoking articles like the one we discuss today.
THIS IS AN AUDIO ONLY PODCAST
Today on Gritty, I am joined by Adam Janke, Editor in Chief, of the Journal of Mountain Hunting, resident of B.C. and the host of the Beyond the Kill podcast. We discuss the issues surrounding the Grizzly Hunting ban in British Columbia and we go deep on the topic. But before I launch into the conversation with Adam I feel it is important to set the stage for the discussion. The topic is not a sexy one--but it’s extremely important. So please hang on and slog your way through it because this stuff matters.
In August of this year, the left-leaning New Democratic government, propped up by the Green Party, took office in British Columbia in July after ousting the Liberals who had ruled the province for 16 years. A few weeks ago, Doug Donaldson, the province’s minister of forests and lands announced that (quote) “it is abundantly clear that the grizzly hunt is not in line with the public’s values.” Donaldson also said (in an interview with the CBC News) that the level of Grizzly Bear hunting in BC is sustainable. However, Donaldson says the decision to end trophy hunting is “not a matter of numbers, it’s a matter of society has come to the point in B.C. where they are no longer in favour of the grizzly bear trophy hunt.”
I can’t help but feel deeply disturbed by the government’s decision to ban Grizzly bear hunting and the justifications behind it.
Make no mistake about it, the Grizzly Bear Ban makes the following statement: “Hunting is immoral.” “You are an evil, dare I say “un-evolved” person if you hunt Grizzly Bears.” And “Hunting grizzly bears is morally reprehensible… we do not need to do this any longer…”
Please understand that their argument is not based on science or rationale. Their justification for banning Grizzly Bear hunting is solely based on moral reasoning. These people have argued and lost the health, science, and conservation argument. So they changed tactics and made this a debate about right and wrong--about morality. And the truth is, the hunting debate has and always will boil down to one thing… the morality of it. Is hunting moral?
The moral argument against hunting is that hunting kills animals unnecessarily. This claim depends on the existence of alternative activities that accomplish hunting’s effects with less or no animal killing. It is said that nutrition does not justify hunting because we have alternative sources of nutrition, namely agriculture and domestic animal production; which does not kill animals or only kills farm animals.
Today on Gritty, my guest is my good friend Phil Mendoza and our topic is Targeting Buck Fever. Phil is a stud. Period. Not just because he’s an incredible hunter, archer, Train To Hunt champion, owner of Alpha Bowhunting and the Alpha Bowhunting Challenge and not because he’s the owner of the biggest archery shop in Denver; although that resume pretty sick. No, Phil is a stud because of his character. “The best index to a person's character is how he treats people who can't do him any good, and how he treats people who can't fight back.” ― Abigail Van Buren
And that quote about sums up Phil and why I like him so much. He’s been a guest on the podcast before. Early on, when I started the Gritty Bowmen podcast, Phil and Aron Snyder went on an Epic Big Horn Sheep hunt and Aron tells the story on GB EPISODE 24 and 30. More recently, Phil was a guest on episode 255 where he and our friends from Fit 4 The Hunt talked about Physical Conditioning and The Mental Game--those have been popular episodes and if you’ve never listened them, I recommend you check them out.
Phil wrote a booklet, not too long ago, that he titles Targeting Buck Fever. Every hunter, every archer has struggled at one time or another with Buck Fever. The urban dictionary defines buck fever as, “nervousness felt by novice hunters when they first sight game.” Which is absolute rubbish because buck fever can affect both new and experienced hunters. When the stakes are high, when you’re on that once-in-a-lifetime hunt, when it’s the last hour of the last day, when the buck of your dreams presents a last second shot, buck fever can wreck you. So how do you rise to occasion, hold your mud, and crush that shot? Well, that’s the discussion that Phil and I have on today’s podcast. It’s good stuff. Take a listen and if you like what you hear, do me a favor and link up with Phil on his Alpha Bowhunting Instagram and Youtube Channels and checkout his book on Amazon. As always, thanks for tuning in to Gritty and making this show possible.
Today on Gritty, I’m on location in Oklahoma with Tim Burnett. We’re on a whitetail hunt in Oklahoma. And I’m trying to self-film my hunt. And… it’s not so easy. Tim shares his philosophy on self-filming. And we stray from the subject of self-filming hunts to the topic of so-called trophy hunting--and the propensity of weak people to fault-find and criticize others to make themselves feel better about their own lives. Because if you can hate on a post about a kid’s first bull elk, you’ve got problems and I’m not afraid to say, “grow-up” and “get a life.” Stop saying things that make you weak. And figure yourself out. Too many people assume the problems of the world are someone else's fault. A true person tries to change him or herself, which is more difficult and less grand. If we all focused on fixing ourselves instead of trying to fix everybody else the world would be a better place. And if you think you don’t have anything to fix--think again. Evil is the force that believes its knowledge is complete.
The reality is this:
•Everybody acts out a myth,
•but very few people know what their myth is.
•And you should know what your myth is,
•because it might be a tragedy.
• And maybe you don't want it to be.
Today on Gritty, I’m joined by John Barklow and Chris Derek. John is the Big Game Product Manager at Sitka Gear and Chris is the Whitetail Product Manager at Sitka. AND, I am joined by Sloane Brown from Backbone Media, a public relations, social media and content marketing agency for active lifestyle brands. AND I’m joined by my good friend, Casey Harbertson, partner and owner of MTN OPS.
The group of us were invited to Sloane’s family ranch in Texas to hunt whitetails. And although we talk whitetail hunting on an upcoming episode--this episode is more technical in nature--it’s about survival, it’s about managing moisture within your chosen clothing system. It’s about hunter responsibility. It’s about staying gritty in hostile and sometimes deadly conditions. By the end of this episode you should have a better understanding of clothing layering systems and when and why they matter. And, hopefully, as a result of this episode, you’ll be better prepared for surviving an extreme cold disaster. And after this podcast, if you’d like to learn more about A Navy SEAL Rewarming Drill, go to Sitkagear.com and search “Rewarming Drill.”
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I sit down with SOLO HNTR, Tim Burnett. We talk about our Oklahoma Whitetail hunt, Public Lane Hunting vs. Guided Hunts and Tim shares his most meaningful hunt.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we are in Canada at Primitive Outfitting. We talk with guide, Ben Jackson and hunter, Clay Reinarz. Clay was fortunate enough to get one of the last Grizzly hunting tags before they closed Grizzly hunting in Canada. He shares the story of his Longbow Grizzly hunt and how things went a little sideways. Check it out. To learn more about the Canadian Grizzly Ban check out Episodes 282 and 278.
Today on Gritty, I am joined by Tim Burnett, aka SOLO HUNTER and we talk about branding, marketing and business. Tim and I are in the business of content creation and so our branding and marketing discussion leans that direction. I really like Tim--he’s got a “what you see is what you get” personality that I find refreshing. And he doesn’t over complicate things--words like, “don’t be a jackass” are pretty easy to comprehend. Nonetheless, in classic fashion, I ask him to elaborate on the “jackass” statement just to be sure I fully understand it.
I ask Tim how Solo started. What’s the biggest mistake people make when creating a brand name. We talk about our objectives when we create content. And we talk about the importance of good business partners and how you know whether you have a good one or not. We agree that media consumption habits differ greatly from platform to platform, for example., from TV to FB to Instagram to Youtube to Twitter--and people have preferred platforms. We discuss the differences between platforms and we share our thoughts on how our messaging differs from platform to platform.
This isn’t all we talk about, but this intro gives you a good idea of what this show is about. I hope you find this episode helpful. In today’s world, nearly everyone is a content creator of some sort. So I don’t believe this episode is just for those trying to build a brand per se. This episode can help those who are actively involved in promoting the hunting life, conservation and life values. Finally, please know that Tim and I are by no means experts in marketing or content creation--we just know what has worked for us and we share it on this podcast.
For those who want to learn more about these topics, I recommend that you read the following books:
The Thank You Economy, Crush It, and Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk. And for those wanting to start a new career and chase a more meaningful job, check-out the book START, by Jon Acuff. In this book, “Jon Explores the five stages every life goes through on the path to awesome and looks at what it takes to punch fear in the face, escape average and do work that matters.”
On the episode of Gritty Bowmen we talk about missing the shot and reducing the “cone of variables”. Be sure to listen to the previous parts to this episode; Episodes 291 and 292. We are joined by Aron Snyder, Bryan Broderick of Lost Arrow Films, David Brinker of Sitka Gear in Alberta, Canada.
On the episode of Gritty Bowmen we are joined by Aron Snyder, Bryan Broderick of Lost Arrow Films, David Brinker of Sitka Gear in Alberta, Canada. We continue our discussion from the previous episode by talking about David’s recent change from traditional archery to a compound. David has struggled with target panic and since he switched to a hinge release and a compound and followed some of Joel Turner’s advice, he has found success.
On the episode of Gritty Bowmen we talk about our 2017 Mule Deer Hunt in Alberta, Canada. We are joined by Aron Snyder, Bryan Broderick of Lost Arrow Films & David Brinker of Sitka Gear. We begin this discussion by sharing our mule deer stalks and Aron talks Mechanical vs. Fixed Blade Broadheads and Bryan Broderick shares his success with the longbow.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I interview my Grandfather, Joe Lane. My Grandfather is nearly 90 years of age and his time on this earth is almost over. Every human being travels the road of life. And in my estimation, the best humans among us are the ones who travel their road with moral fortitude--the best among us are those who love the best they can. I know this might come across as fairytale-ish to some, but I truly believe this to be so.
My Grandpa Joe has never been a perfect man. But I can say with certainty that he has always loved; and although that love maybe imperfect, it’s always been at the heart of who he wants and strives to be and he has modeled well for me how a man should love and cherish his wife. And what higher endeavor can a man aspire to than to love and reduce suffering in the world? There are those in this world who honestly “TRY” to be a good person. And there are those who make no effort at all to be “good.” My grandfather is the former--and for that I am deeply grateful. My Grandpa has always been a prominent figure in my life. He’s always been a strong man. A man of grit and determination. He’s honestly one of the most physically tough human beings I’ve ever met. Growing up during the Great Depression and in a state of abject poverty he was hardened and forever shaped by the rigors of his youth and on this podcast, myself, my sister, Katie and her husband Bryce talk with my Grandfather about his interesting and diverse life. Things aren’t like they used to be. We’ve traded root cellars for refrigerators and horses for cars. We have smart phones and iPads. And very few of us are in danger of starving to death or dying from Scarlet Fever. So take a listen to this long conversation and then stop complaining about the traffic, or your job, or how things aren’t fair because they could be a whole lot worse. In the words of Jordan B. Peterson, “Pick up your damn suffering and bear it. And try to be a good person so you don’t make it worse.” Because, “Since Auschwitz we know what man is capable of. And since Hiroshima we know what is at stake.”
In other words, man is self-determining AND life has meaning. So act like it. Live a life that is intrinsically good and worth remembering.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, I get to hang out with the one and only Randy Newberg! Randy Newberg identifies himself as a “hunter.” Growing up in a small town in the midwest--Randy spent a lot of time running around on public land hunting and trapping small game. I would say that Randy is the quintessential “Public Land Hunter” and he uses his platforms to advocate for hunters and public access. In addition to representing hunters in Congress and state legislatures, he serves as a volunteer and board member for many hunting and conservation groups. I can honestly say that Randy Newberg is one of my favorite people on the planet. He says what he means and and means what he says. And if you don’t like what he has to say, well then, you’ve mistaken him for someone who gives a damn. Follow Randy on Instagram and facebook and check-out his youtube channel for some good public land hunting films.

I was fortunate to meet Samantha Reynolds and Michael Barry at the @ladieshuntingcamp this summer. As I got to know them I was impressed by their perspective and attitude toward hunting. I felt as though these two individuals embodied the "new hunters" that Shane Mahoney (@conservation_visions) spoke of in the last podcast. Sammy isn't quite sure if she's ready to hunt; but Mike is committed and Samantha supports him. I hope this episode gets you thinking about hunting, why you do it, and how you represent hunters at large.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I talk with Shane Mahoney. Shane Patrick Mahoney is the President and CEO of Conservation Visions Inc.. A Newfoundland native, he holds both an Honors and a Masters of Science degree in Zoology from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Mahoney has over 30 years experience working primarily as a scientist, wildlife manager, policy innovator and strategic advisor.
Shane is a brilliant and passionate conservationist. And he has been working on a massive project called “The Wild Harvest Initiative.” Shane explains it like this: Safe, healthy food is important to everyone. Every year, some 40 million citizens in the United States and Canada take to the fields, mountains, forests, streams, and lakes, returning with a harvest of wildlife and fish to feed their families and share with friends. Just how much of this natural, organic food do these two nations provide annually, and how valuable is it to our societies? At this point, no one really knows. “It’s time we did know,” said Shane Mahoney, founder and CEO of Conservation Visions, Inc., a private conservation organization focused on building broader coalitions in support of biodiversity and the natural world. “We’ve known for well over a century that conservation of the world’s ecosystems is critical to human well being and that the sustainable use of wild resources brings enormous and unique benefits to human beings everywhere.”
On november 30th of this year, British Columbia says it will no longer allow the trophy hunting of grizzly bears in the Canadian province.
Of the approximately 15,000 grizzlies in British Columbia, about 250 are killed by hunters annually, according to government figures.
Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson characterized that level of hunting as “sustainable” in an interview with the CBC.
However, he says the decision to end trophy hunting is “not a matter of numbers, it’s a matter of society has come to the point in B.C. where they are no longer in favour of the grizzly bear trophy hunt.”
The key word in the above statement is “trophy.” As stated, the population of Grizzly Bears is robust and the harvest rates are sustainable; but regardless of these facts, Grizzly Bear hunting has been banned by the voice of the people. And something that was “legal” is not legal anymore. I’ve been saying this for a long time, legal is not an argument for hunting. As Steven Rinella recently said, “it’s legal for a man to cheat on his wife but nobody believes that makes it okay.”
Why did 90% of the electorate vote against “trophy hunting Grizzly bears?” If you’re a hunter, are you surprised by this vote? Is hunting even a relevant activity in today’s world? Why do people despise trophy hunting? What is trophy hunting? How have hunters in the United States and Canada portrayed hunting in the last 20 to 30 years? What motives and values do we display and promote on our TV Shows and Social Media Outlets? Does it matter? If we send the wrong message, what’s at stake?
These are the sorts of questions that Shane tackles on a regular basis. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to personally visit with Shane and have him as a guest on this podcast.
I hope you listen to this entire podcast and that it causes you to feel an increased measure of concern for wild animals and wild places. For, “hunters of have an inseparable relationship with nature and a responsibility to protect it.”

Hello folks, on this episode of Gritty Bowmen I was able to hang out with my friends from Rockhouse motion--Aaron Hitchins, Dustin Lutt and Logan Ross. Sometimes you meet someone who’s work you’ve admired. Or an individual you’ved looked up to because of the message they’ve shared or the principles they stand for. And so in your mind you’ve built them up into something special--and then you meet them and you’re utterly disappointed. They’re not who you thought they were and you feel totally let down. BUT, then there’s the opposite… you meet that person and they’re even cooler than you expected. They’re a breath of fresh air and you feel fortunate to have met them. Well… that’s how I feel about Rockhouse Motion--they’re remarkably talented, quirky, creative, deep-thinking, down-to-earth folks that I feel blessed to know. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we talk about Logan’s hunting season--being a new hunter who has never killed an animal; we talk about her thoughts and experiences from this past season. Dustin shares his thoughts on having a wife how hunts. And we learn a little more about the stark differences in personality between Dustin and Aaron and how they hunt differently. This is a late night conversation in a hotel room after pulling some long days at the ATA Show earlier this year. I thoroughly enjoy these late-night conversations with excellent people. Sit in and take a listen. And if you haven’t seen their films or are not familiar with their work, go check out the film, Beyond The Roar ; you’ll be glad you did.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we meet with Jana Waller & Jim Kinsey of Skullbound TV. We talk about how they met and fell in love and how they began Skullbound TV. Hello friends, on EPISODE 251 of the Gritty Bowmen podcast we had the pleasure of hanging out with my friends Ryan and Hillary Lampers from the Hunt Harvest Health podcast to talk testosterone, gut health, diet and more. That same evening, Ryan and Hillary joined me in a discussion with my good friend, and backcountry food aficionado, Heather Kelly, the maker of Heather’s Choice Backcountry Meals. The 4 of us nerd-out on backcountry food and discuss our shared passion for good eating in the backcountry. Heather is a nutrition expert in her own right and she spares no expense in the creation of her backcountry meals and it shows in her products. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to interview both Heather Kelly and Ryan and Hillary all together on the same AWESOME episode of Gritty Bowmen. Check it out! If you like this episode and you want more like it, let Heather and Hillary and Ryan know how you feel. I hope this episode gets you excited to try some of Heather’s products and to start experimenting with some of your own meals at home.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we meet with Ryan and Hillary Lampers of Hunt, Harvest, Health.
So… about a month back--Aron Snyder hit the big 4-0. And I’m well on my way to 43. We’re not exactly old, but we’re not spring chickens either. We’re fit for two older guys--in fact, we’re in better shape now than we were in our early 30s--and we’re pretty happy about that. But father-time isn’t backing down and it’s more important than ever to live well--both physically and emotionally. And that’s why I’m pleased to have Doctor Hillary Lampers and my good buddy Ryan Lampers, aka Donnie Vincent Lampers, on today’s episode of Gritty Bowmen. Ryan is an absolute stud when it comes to bowhunting public lands. And his wife Hillary is a doctor--but not your regular, everyday, run of the mill doctor that I generally mistrust except in the case of dire emergencies; Hillary is the kind of doctor that actually treats root causes of physical distress instead of simply prescribing drugs to treat symptoms.
Hillary and Ryan started a podcast this past December called Hunt Harvest Health--and I’m so glad they did! I’ve been listening to their podcasts on backcountry meal prep, gardening, testosterone, cortisol and other hormones, gut health and the second brain, hunting and more. This past year has been a whirlwind of life-changing events for me. Admittedly, I’m not as fit or feeling quite as froggy as I did a year ago.
If you’ve got little kids around while you’re listening to this podcast, you may want to revisit this episode when they’re not around. This is a talk about health--it’s not time to be squeamish. We talk about things like poop, S.E.X., how to increase testosterone, love languages, etc. You’ve been warned.
Some of you may be thinking that this “health stuff” is boring or that this medical talk is way too complex--but it’s really not--and I truly believe it is life-changing information. So I encourage you to buck-up and take notes. And when you’re done with this podcast, go subscribe to the HUNT HARVEST HEALTH PODCAST and continue learning how to feed your Temple of Power.

This episode of Gritty Bowmen is coming at you from Whale Pass on Prince of Wales Island in South East Alaska. Our guest is our friend Ken Brough. Ken is a quiet unassuming guy, but if you spend a little time with him you quickly realize there's more to this man than meets the eye.
He’s an accountant by trade but an adventurer at heart. He’s been to some of the most remote areas of Alaska. He’s hunted brown bear, caribou, goat, and sheep to Sitka blacktail and big coastal black bears that Prince of Wales if famous for. A couple years ago Ken quit his accounting practice and started a hunting outfit in whale pass on the island. He calls his outfit Prince of Wales Eagle Lodge. We purchased lodging at his place for two weeks. Ken caters to the DIY hunters who want to do everything on their own, as well as those who wish to be catered to. He basically set us up with a place to sleep, a car to drive and a skiff to cruise the ocean shores with. On this episode we learn more about Ken. The enigmatic accountant/bush pilot. He tells us a few good stories about his adventures and the harrowing adventures of others who have explored Alaska’s wild frontier. Ken shares his knowledge about bears and about POW island and he talks about what drew him to the island. We talk bout the difficulty of judging the bears and the best time to fish the island. It’s good stuff. I hope you enjoy hanging out with this quiet unassuming man as much as we did. If you’re planning a trip to POW island give Ken and his lodge a look. You can find him on instagram @EagleLodgeAlaska. Give him a follow and checkout his website EagleLodgeAlaska.com

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder and myself hang out with the Eastmans, Guy and Ike Eastman of the Eastmans’ Hunting Journal, Eastmans’ Bowhunting Journal and Eastmans’ TV.
The Eastmans’ tradition began in 1956 with Gordon Eastman. Gordon was a true pioneer in adventure hunting and outdoor wildlife cinematography. His first project was in the wilds of Alaska. He was also among the first to ever film in the North Country, and built such a solid reputation that Walt Disney himself hired Gordon to film outdoor productions in the 1960s.
Today Mike, Guy and Ike carry on Gordon’s legacy by producing the industry-leading publications of Eastmans’ Hunting and Bowhunting Journals in combination with the award-winning Eastmans’ Hunting TV show that airs 52 weeks a year and showcases fair chase rifle and bow hunts on all western big game.
This is just a fun podcast with some solid dudes! If you’re not subscribed to Eastmans’ Hunting Journal and/or Eastmans’ Bowhunting Journal you should go to www.eastmans.com
and get signed-up. Eastmans’ has been around for a long time and continues to be a powerful influence for good in the hunting industry. Get involved, support their work and get yourself a sweet western hunting magazine to boot.

Okay friends! On this episode of Gritty Bowmen Mark Brownlee and myself hang out with our friend Greg Munther at the annual (BHA) Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Rendezvous. Greg is from the older generation… like he’s 72 years old. But he doesn’t seem that old--he’s still getting out and killing big horn sheep, coues deer, mule deer, and elk with his stickbow, which he’s been shooting his entire life. Greg tells us how he uses Llamas to help him get things done in the backcountry. He’s an inspiring person. And his passion for the outdoors and for hunting is infectious. In his younger years, Greg Munther was a Forest Service biologist, District Ranger and natural resource consultant. He has been roaming the hills, streams and lakes of Montana continuously since 1976, with passions split between bowhunting, bird hunting and flyfishing. He lives in Missoula with his wife, Sherry, of 35 years and their German Shorthair Pointer Lucy, and their 3 llamas. Greg is the BHA Montana Chapter Chairman. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Greg Munther.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Mark Brownlee and I do a little Heather’s Choice taste test. Heather’s Choice is owned by Heather Kelly. Heather was on episode 114 of the Gritty Bowmen podcast--and on that episode we geeked out on nutrition and talked about her backcountry meals. On that episode, the Gritty Scotsman and I said that we would do a little taste test of Heather’s Choice meals and report back to you. We also said, we would go one step further and perform a poop test--you know… validate whether Heather’s food exists the body without causing undue harm.
We are happy to report that Heather’s Choice does not cause any stomach cramping, bloating, farting, or other gastrointestinal miseries. We did not film the results of the poop test--you’re gonna have to take our word for it.
In this podcast I read from an article in Elk Hunter magazine about Heather’s Choice meals. But I mistakenly say the article is in Western Hunter magazine--it’s not. Just to be clear, the Heather’s Choice article is in the recent summer 2016 edition of Elk Hunter magazine.
If you’re one of those people who can’t stand it when people talk while eating--this podcast isn’t for you. We did not record this video with the intention of it being a formal podcast--so it’s a unpolished. Listen at your own risk. Better yet, go watch it on our website or through Gritty Bowmen TV on iTunes.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen Jason Phelps shares a few more choice bits of Elk wisdom. How to Call Elk with Jason Phelps.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder, Anthony Spencer, and myself hang out with the veritable, authentic, what-you-see-is-what-you-get, sheep hunting adventurer Bryan Martin of Asian Mountain Outfitters. Bryan has hunted all over the world--from Canada and the U.S. to the Asian countries of Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and more. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we discuss rugged mountain hunting--our topics range from dealing with such things as swamp butt to whether or not women are as tough as men. A fair warning: things get dicey in this podcast--Bryan is a little like Donald Trump--not too worried about saying things that offend people. And Bryan isn’t shy about his opinions either. Like I said, what you see is what you get--Bryan is direct and too the point. We have attached a copy of Bryan’s gear list to the show notes on our website for this podcast episode. You can learn more about Bryan and Asian Mountain Outfitters at www.asianmountainoutfitters.com
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with our friend Cory Miller, owner of xXx Archery, at his bowshop in Rainier Oregon. We talk to Cory about compound-bow tuning. This podcast has some visual footage that you will want to watch if this stuff is new to you. At the very end of this podcast we inserted some video footage of Cory teaching my cousin Ben how to properly grip and hold a compound bow when shooting. In Cory’s experience as a tournament bow shooter for PSE and an archery shop owner--improper grip is one of the most common mistakes that he sees in archery shooters. Checkout the video at the end of this podcast for a brief lesson from Cory on how the grip should be done. If you live in the area, check-out xXx Archery--it’s worth the drive. And now, Cory has a super-cool Techno Shoot that’s a blast to play with. Go to our website or to our Youtube channel to see a video of Cousin Ben and the Gritty Scotsman go head-to-head in a Techno Shoot-out. It’s good, gritty fun.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with traditional archer, conservationist, and film producer Clay Hayes of Twisted Stave Media. On this podcast we on location at the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Annual Rendezvous. Clay makes his own bows and hunts with them--he carves them out of a piece of wood. He’s a “real” hard-core traditional archer. He and I and Mark Brownlee get to know each-other on this podcast. We talk about his films, which I highly recommend. And I think Clays films are especially good to share with your non-hunting friends. You can find his films at http://www.twistedstave.com/ I really like Clay. He’s a deep and thoughtful person. And his films are the same.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Brian and Aron meet with Tom & Danny Clum of Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen Jason Phelps shares more of his elk nuggets of wisdom. Hunting Roosevelt Elk on the Oregon Coast.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I travel to Boise Idaho and visit with friend, Corey Jacobsen, multiple time world elk calling champion and owner of ELK101--ELK101.com. In this podcast, we have a good time answering elk-hunting questions that new, and old, elk hunters commonly ask. It’s GRITTY stuff.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen Jason Phelps shares more of his Elk Nuggets of wisdom. What is Jason's go-to calling sequence? How can you set the scene Bob Ross style? And more.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Mark Brownlee and myself visit with Randy Newberg and Jeff Sposito. Randy Newberg is the host and producer of the TV show Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg--a show about self-guided hunting on public lands. Randy is also the host of Hunt Talk Radio, aka, Randy Newberg Unfiltered. As an avid conservationist, Randy advocates on behalf of hunters, educating his audience in the role hunters have played in restoring wildlife to America in what he calls “The greatest story never told.” Randy shares his passion for our public lands, a place for all hunters, “whether they are, or are not, a man of means.” Jeff Sposito is with Sitka Gear and he is also an avid conservationist and with a little help from Randy has launched a new conservation program titled, “2% for conservation.” It was my pleasure to have them on the podcast. And if you’re not already, I hope each of you who are listening will take the time follow Randy. He’s kind of an old dude--sorry Randy--but Newberg has been around awhile and he knows a bit of history that most young hunters don’t have a clue about. And I’m grateful he’s on our side--that we’ve got someone like Randy advocating on behalf of public lands and the animals that live on them. And do what you can to support Jeff’s project, 2% For Conservation. Call him up, get on his website, follow him on Instagram--ask him how you can help. Remember this quote by Shane Mahoney; because it’s true: “Wildlife and wild places no longer exist by accident or without the intervention of those that truly and deeply care.”
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Mark Brownlee and myself visit with Ryan Callaghan and Kenton Carruth of First Lite at the annual BHA Rendezvous. Since 2007, First Lite Clothing has been dedicated to building the best hunting gear on the market out of the most reliable materials and fabrics. Aron Snyder has been a long-time proponent of First Lite gear and for good reason. Not only do they make top quality technical clothing--the company is also ran by some of the coolest cats in the hunting industry--guys and gals who actually get outside and use their gear--and perhaps most importantly, guys who give back to the hunting industry and to nature by proactively investing in conservation efforts year-round. Kenton and Ryan are the kind of guys you want to hunt with; entertaining, hard-working, and gritty.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, I took a break from running the show, and in my place, Aron and Anthony interview Aron’s long-time friend, Ryan Avery, co-owner of Rockslide. These two have know each other for years, and can rib each-other like only good friends can. If you’re not already logging on to Rokslide and checking things out, give it a look. The site is packed with top-notch backcountry hunting information.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen Aron Snyder and I talk cook stoves. Aron also shows us some of the latest Kifaru backpacks coming soon and the winner is announced for the Kifaru Apollo Backpack.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, A-ron and myself hang out with his long time friend Mark Smith, AKA Muley Slayer. Mark Smith has, in Aron’s own words, “killed more things than small pox.” Specifically, Mark is all about Mule Deer. Mark gives us get a glimpse of a less experienced Aron Snyder and how he first cut his teeth on colorado mule deer. And Aron shares some great stories from their past.
Jason Phelps shares some Elk Nuggets of wisdom on this episode of Gritty Bowmen. Stay tuned for more episodes each week.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Anthony Spencer and myself sit down, for second interview, with my good friends Ty and Rihanna Cary at the MTN OPS booth at the Northwest Hunting and Conservation EXPO in Salt Lake City Utah. We discuss Ty’s film production company, Standing Buck Productions. Ty tells us about camera gear and filming hunts with Jim Shockey and about Ty’s upcoming projects. Ty and Rihanna are cool. They truly love the outdoors and the hunting industry and want to do their best to positively influence the people around them.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we chat with our good friend Ty Stubblefield of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers.
“They’ve done studies to find out why someone stopped hunting, or why they didn’t get started hunting, and the number one answer was ‘they didn’t have a place to hunt’.”
on this episode of gritty bowmen, A-Aron and I sit down at the Northwest Hunting and conservation expo with Robby Denning, Co owner of Rockslide. Robby is the sort of guy you want to hunt with. Nice, Knowledgable, and an absolute killer. He has been dropping giant Mule Deer Season after season. We discuss What Robby feels are important and often over looked methods of hunting. And we talk about his new book, Hunting Big Mule Deer: How to Take The Best Buck of Your Life.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we’re back with Cory Miller at xXx Archery Shop and he tells us about some of the cool new products he picked up at this year’s ATA show in Kentucky.
If you live in the NW and you’ve never been to the XXX archery shop, you should go there. Corey has a cool, indoor electronic shoot for you to play with. And he’s a limited distributor for Kifaru—so he has pack frames in his store that you can try on with an 85 pound bag of cement to see how it carries. And Corey is very knowledgeable about all things compound bow, backpacking, and hunting.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with friend, Tim Burnett, of Solo Hunter at the MTN OPS booth at the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo in Salt Lake City. If you don’t watch Solo Hunter, I think you’re missing out. There are many great episodes but I highly recommend one of Tim’s most recent shows, Season 6, episode 13, GALE FORCE BOW HUNT--this is a December Mule Deer in ID. You can download this episode at SOLOHNTR.VHX.TV. Also, you can watch many of the prior season episodes of SOLO HNTR on Tim’s youtube channel--SOLO HNTR. You can find links to Tim’s shows in the show notes of this podcast. This podcast is a 4-man show; as my hunting partner, Anthony Spencer, and co-host Aron Snyder join in for a laid-back hunt chat with The SOLO HNTR.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I visit with Randy Black Eagle, aka Randy Kitts, and my friend Cory Miller of xXx Archery. Randy tells about his company, what makes Black Eagle unique among arrow makers and he tells us about some of their latest products.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen. I and my hunting partner Anthony Spencer sit down with Russ Meyer and Corey Jacobsen at the Northwest Hunting and Conservation EXPO in Salt Lake City Utah. Anthony and I talk about the first time we met Russ, which was in the peaks of some Arizona mountains chasing elk in mid-september a few years back. Russ has got to be one of the most successful, under-the-radar hunters I’ve ever met. Kind of like Aron Snyder, Russ Meyer is a bit introverted. And like Aron, I think Russ is sometimes misunderstood by those on the outside looking in. But I find people like Russ fascinating. They don’t open-up that easily but once they do, they usually talk your ear off (ahem… Aron Snyder). In this podcast, Russ doesn’t disappoint. We get to know him a little better. He shares his knowledge on how to slay big game year after year, which he has done for decades. And Russ tells us what he does to raise his children with hunting. And we get to hear a little about how he and his wife work-out his days in the field, away from home for months at a time. And Corey Jacobsen shares his insight too—but mostly, I’d say he was just the eye candy.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with our friend Cory Miller, at his bowshop, xXx archery, in Rainier Oregon. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about arrows and arrow building since Episode 67 with Tim Gillingham. Tim dropped some knowledge on that podcast. Cory helps us make sense of Tim’s information on today’s show. And Cory tells us how to build and tune arrows. Welcome to the Arrow podcast.
If you live in the NW and you’ve never been to the xXx archery shop, you should go there. Cory has a cool, indoor electronic shoot for you to play at. And he’s a limited distributor for Kifaru—so he has pack frames in his store that you can try on with an 85 pound bag of cement to see how it carries. And Cory runs the Kifaru Sawtooth shelter and stove setup—he is very knowledgeable about all things compound bow, backpacking, and hunting. We NorthWest guys are lucky to have him in our neck of the woods.
This podcast has a lot of visuals so it’s worth watching. You can check it out on our youtube channel, grittybowmen.com or download it to your mobile device from GrittyBowmenTV on iTunes or Podbean for Android users.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder and I visit with friend Matt Davis of Hoyt archery. Matt is very handy with a traditional bow. And Aron and Matt talk about A-Aron’s initial foray into the traditional bowhunting world. Matt knows bows. He’s a wealth of knowledge and a solid dude.
On this episode of The Gritty Bowmen we talk with Aron Snyder of Kifaru International. Aron shares his latest Traditional Bow progress, his experience with various types of tarps, as well as some behind the scenes info from the Western Hunt Expo.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with our ginger friends, Land Tawney and Ty Stubblefield of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. This was my first chance to meet Land and it was a pleasure. Land Tawney is the Executive Director Backcountry Hunters and Anglers or BHA. And through BHA, Land fights to keep public lands public. And in case you’re wondering… Land is his real name--not his “show” name.
Ty Stubblefield is BHA Chapter Coordinator. Ty knows that hunters and fisherman are true conservationists and stewards of our lands. When Ty isn’t fighting for conservation causes he can be found in the wild places he loves with bow or fly-pole in hand. BHA understands that our public lands are not free and must be fought for.
I’m proud to call these ginger dudes friends.
If you’re not already, become a member of BHA today. And as a member, try to attend the annual BHA rendezvous this year, 2016, in Missoula, Montana on April first through the third. You can learn more about their annual shindig at rendezvous2016.com -- I hope to see you there.
EPISODE 80: On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder and I hang out with Cameron Hanes and Joe Rogan. Joe Rogan is a podcaster, UFC commentator, stand-up comedian and HUNTER. Joe’s podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience, is a powerhouse. Joe has been an avid hunter Since his first hunting trip with Steven Rinella on the MeatEater show, titled First Timers, Montona Mule Deer, which aired in April 2013. On his podcast, Rogan has interviewed such people as Jim Shockey, Steven Rinellla, Tim Burnett, Remi Warren, and more. Joe has a massive non-hunting audience that loves his show. And he’s been able to use his platform to educate the non-hunting community about how hunting is conservation… about how hunting saves wildlife and wild places. He’s a gifted interviewer, entertainer, and with the help of his good friend Cameron Hanes, I’ve no doubt he’s become a skilled hunter as well… as long as he doesn’t talk to much… so i’ve heard from Cameron.
I don’t think Cameron needs an introduction to the Gritty Community… but here goes anyway for you new hunters or for those of you who live under a rock. Cameron Hanes is a bowhunting fool. And he trains year-round, always pushing his body to failure and beyond. He grew up “getting it done” on public land with elk and deer and bear… today, he continues to inspire both hunters and would-be hunters everyday.
In the middle of this podcast somehwere, we lost a camera angle for a couple minutes--like 10 minutes. Cameron is cut-off the screen… sorry Cam.
This is a fun podcast--you’ve got Joe Rogan, Cameron Hanes, and Aron Snyder, all on the show. It was good time.

EPISODE 79: On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder and I hang out with Cameron Hanes at the ATA show in Kentucky. Prior to this event, I had never met Cameron Hanes. I’ve read his books. I’ve watched his blacktail films and some of his hunts with Eastmans. I’ve seen him and South Cox chase high country mule deer. I’ve seen him hunt giant brown bear with dear friend, Roy Roth. I’ve watched Cameron stalk cape buffalo in Australia and on and on. And of course, I’ve seen Cameron’s social media game, which is pretty strong. But I’ve never met the guy. You hear and see things… And I can’t help but admire his drive and passion for fitness… and his love of the outdoors and of the bowhunting life… but I had never actually sat down and talked to him. And much like my first meeting with Aron Snyder… I found Cameron to be a super cool dude. Easy to talk to. Genuine. And funny. Much like my own hunting buddies.
I was able to hit the local Crossfit gym in Kentucky with Cameron thanks to our mutual friend, Dan Staton, owner of Elk Shape. Dan lead a room full of hunters from the ATA show in a great team workout. Cameron was in his element. He loves fitness. And It was obvious. After the workout, Cameron took a group of us out to breakfast and there we laughed and swapped hunting stories and I couldn’t help... but think how it felt just like elk camp with my own buddies. At the end, he paid the bill. And I walked away from the experience thinking, I just like hunters. They’re cool people. And there is an instant brotherhood among us as long as we are able to keep our massive egos in check and be positive.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen with visit with my friends Kenton Clairemont and Jesse Wise. Kenton is the founder and owner of Train To Hunt. Working out and Hunting are the two things that Kenton has always loved to do. He was a four sport athlete in high school, a state champ in wrestling and a collegiate baseball player. After a year in the minor leagues he returned to school for his Masters degree in Sports Psychology. After graduation he began his career as a personal trainer, and it was his love for hunting, the outdoors, and helping people that inspired him to start Train To Hunt. He is an avid bowhunter, and fitness coach.
Jesse Wise is the Train to Hunt Director in my home state, Oregon. Jesse and I met at the ATA show and since then we’ve hit the weights together in my ghetto basement home gym. Jesse has started a brand called Unashamed Outdoors to share his christ-centered values and his love of the outdoors.
Kenton is the real deal when it comes to fitness. He’s a student of healthy living. His company, Train To Hunt, is inspiring hunters to get in shape for hunting and for life. The Train To Hunt community is pretty cool. Regardless of your fitness-level, I encourage you to check it out.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we visit with hunting film producer, Jason Matzinger. I first discovered Jason’s films through the Full Draw Film Tour. And I’ve followed his work ever since. Jason’s films make you think. They tell a story and they’re sincere and heartfelt. Jason is deeply involved in conservation efforts, teaming up with organizations such as the Mule Deer Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Jason is a talented filmmaker and skilled hunter. I look forward to what he does next.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we visit with Easton Corbin and Brandon Bates. These two guys were on a roll and had me laughing for a solid 25 minutes before I looked down and realized the record button had not been pushed on my recording device. we hadn’t captured any of the audio. I hope to get these two characters on a future show because they’re down-right fun. This episode is very short--just a few minutes with some cool dudes that’ll make you smile.
Some of you may recognize Brandon Bates as the host of the award winning show, RMEF Team Elk. Others may recognize him as the voice of the Professional Bull Riders or PBR, which he’s done for more than a decade.
And for those who don’t know, Easton Corbin is an American country music singer. AND a hunter. AND a cool dude. I hope to cross paths with these two fellas again someday.
On this episode of the Gritty Bowmen Aron and Brian discuss western hunting tips. Get their advice on what to do and what not to do when planning a trip out west.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we visit with David and Karin Holder of Raised Hunting. Raised Hunting is about an average american family that has used hunting as a platform to teach ethics and values to their family. I’ve been a big fan of David Holder ever since I first saw him on an early Primos hunting video. David and his family have accomplished a lot since then. Their hunting show captures the raw emotion that comes from an animal at close range, all while focusing on bringing you ultimate adventures with the highest regard to cinematography.
But the best thing about Raised Hunting, in my opinion, are the meaningful values and ideals that they share on their show. If you already know the holders, I hope this episode of the Gritty Bowmen makes you like them even more. And for those of you who have never met the Holders, I hope you take the time to look them up, watch their show and consider how you might use hunting to strengthen the relationships within your family and your community.
Ok folks. This episode of the Gritty Bowmen is probably NOT for everyone. If you’re looking for a reverent podcast about hunting and the outdoors--skip this episode. But if you want to hang out with a group of hunting buddies who know waaaaay too much about eachother, talk a little crap, and don’t pull any punches--this episode might be worth your time. The key word is “might.” We recorded this podcast in the hotel room, after midnight on the last night of the ATA show. It was supposed to be a re-cap of the ATA show and a podcast with Sean Degray about the Total Archery Challenge. However, the podcast quickly circled the drain and just became a series of squirrel chases and fresh Snyderisms. I seriously considered nevering publishing this podcast--EVER. But heck, why not. What you see is what you get. And that’s gritty.
There is a little bonus footage at the very end of this podcast… we were going to throw it away but then I figured… the bonus footage is about as useless as the rest of this podcast so why not just leave it in there.
You have been warned.

time hunting or fishing trips.
From the moment Daniel and Jules put their headsets on I was laughing. They were really easy to talk to and the chemistry between them was obvious--they’re like besties. And it’s contagious. These are fun people. They spend a lot of time road-trippin’ in their trailer. You can catch up with them on social media--it’s fun to see what they’re up to next. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we meet with a couple who met on Facebook! I know… CRAZY. And we hear about how Ty Cary, seduced Rihana with a well executed elk call. Now that’s true love. Seriously though, this couple is legit. Rihana doesn’t mess around when it comes to hunting--she gets it done. In this podcast we hear about the big bull elk Rihana killed, solo, with a bow; which, I’m not gonna lie, totally impressed me. Ty wasn’t able to hunt with Rihana during her elk hunt because he was off filming other hunts under his company Standing Buck Productions. Ty is a talented camerman and producer. I hope you enjoy getting to know these two as much as did.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, I am joined by Aron Snyder and Tim Gillingham. Tim is one of the most accomplished tournament archers in the world--with numerous wins at the national tournament level, he has won the IBO World Championship, ASA World Championship, NFAA 3-D championships and the NFAA Pro Shooter of the Year Award Reading from the Hamskea Archery website, it says: Ever the perfectionist with the attitude that there is always a "better way" to do things, Tim is a constant tinkerer and has come to be one of the foremost authorities in the archery world today. One of Tim’s greatest attributes is his honesty and he is the most accessible pro archer in the entire industry. Ask Tim his opinion about any archery related topic and you’d better be ready to handle the truth. And so, as you can imagine--he and Aron Snyder are quite the combination. Don’t ask their opinions if you don’t want their answers. In this podcast, Tim tells it like it is. He drops some serious knoweldge--try to keep up.
Wishes For Warriors
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we visit with a GIANT man--Bryan Marshall, founder of Wishes For Warriors. And I’m not kidding. His head his huge. He’s built like a tank. He walks sideways through doors… or perhaps, he just kicks them in. We also meet with his two amigos and wounded warriors, Corey Garmon and Cameron Stuart. We learn about his foundation, Wishes for Warriors, and how they’re making a difference in the lives of wounded veterans. These guys are solid. I’ve been known to complain, on occasion, about leg cramps, blisters, and chaffing… and I feel like it’s justified… until I meet someone like Corey Garmon. The dude is a triple amputee and he’s out hiking the hills and killing big bulls. These guys straight-up inspire. To learn more about Wishes For Warriors and how you can be a part of it, checkout our show notes on the Gritty Bowmen website.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we visit with Jana Waller and Jim Kinsey of SkullboundTV. Many of you know them from Skullbound TV. Jim and Jana are huge proponents of conservation. And in their show, they take the time to highlight how hunting IS conservation. Jim was in the marines. And he and Jana are actively involved in supporting U.S. veterans. It was my pleasure meeting them.

In this podcast we meet with my Uncle Kevin Call and John Adams of High Point Outfitters guide service in Arizona. Kevin and John and their team of guides are genuine, down to earth, hard working, smart hunters that are passionate about hunting and helping others be successful. Unless it’s your wife, then things might get a little too intense. ;) They get real about what it’s like to hunt with a significant other and how sometimes it’s best to take a backseat, or you might end up sleeping in the doghouse.
They provide some tips and tricks on how to register for Arizona this coming year with the recent changes for 2016, as well as some of the changes in Colorado.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we travel to Louisville Kentucky to attend the ATA trade show--ATA stands for Archery Trade Association. The ATA Trade Show is the archery and bowhunting industry’s LARGEST show. The show is a member-driven event to promote commerce within the archery and bowhunting industry.
In today’s podcast we visit with Eva Shockey. Eva’s dad, Jim Shockey, is one of the most well-known hunters in the world. Today, Eva co-hosts "Jim Shockey's Hunting Adventures" TV show and represents the Shockey family at outdoor trade and consumer shows.
Eva was a breathe of fresh air. She was easy to talk to, down to earth, and an excellent ambassador for hunting--challenging the stereotypical image of the knuckle-dragging, fist pumping, male hunter; Eva makes it difficult for those against hunting to claim that hunters are uneducated, heartless, animal-hating human beings. And for this, I thank her.
I hope you enjoy the show.
Sadie Kennel has been hunting for about 7 years. She was born and raised in Idaho. What drives Sadie Kennel to hunt? What kind of animals has she hunted?
Sadie gets real about what it’s like to hunt in late season. What it’s like to hunt with her boyfriend Jason Wright of Pure Elevation Productions.
Sadie: My boot’s wet and he (Jason) gets the jetboil out and he’s trying to dry out my boot with the open flame and that’s not working. So finally he pulls out his dry sack that he has for his sleeping bag and says, “Here put this on”… I finally get out of the tent and I shove my foot in this dry bag and put it in my boot and I have my jetboil full of coffee and I’m just like dragging my feet over to the spot and it’s foggy… and we get there and I kinda see this weird silhouette. I thought it was a tree. It turns out it wasn’t a tree it was a deer.
Brian: How dramatically does that improve your mood?
Sadie: Oh instantly! It was like throw my pack off, gettin’ my crap together and I’m like, “Where are we sitting? Let’s do this!”
In this episode of The Gritty Bowmen Podcast Brian Call, Jason Phelps of Phelps Game Calls and Cory Miller of xXx Archery meet with John Hernandez at Bowtech to check out their new Bowtech BT-X bow. This week on The Gritty Bowmen Podcast we team up with Phil Mendoza and Will Bradley of The Natural Born Hunter Podcast. Will Bradley is a Train to Hunt director and competitor. Phil is the Train to Hunt National Champion.
Phil is no stranger to the Gritty Bowmen Podcast. He was on Episode 43: Train to What? Hunt! and regular Gritty co-host, Aron Snyder of Kifaru International, shared the story of Phil’s epic big horn sheep hunting trip on Episode 24 and part 2 on Episode 30.
This podcast is a bit freestyle and covers a wide range of topics. There’s a little bit of everything; from MMA, WWE, Sponsorships and Train to Hunt, to good books, Crossfit and of course some humor thrown in.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron and I were supposed to talk about Ethical Shot distance. But instead, we got side-tracked on a few tangents and completely left the reservation. In this podcast we actually talk about hunting industry camo patterns--Aron makes a few jokes--no offense intended. We talk about what’s going on at Kifaru lately. And we promise that our next episode will, in fact, cover ethical shot distance. Please excuse the poor audio quality of my microphone in this podcast--I screwed up.
In this episode of The Gritty Bowmen Podcast we talk with Corey Jacobsen. Corey is an 8 time Elk Calling Champion. He owns Elk101.com an Elk Hunting website with all things related to hunting elk. We talk about Corey's Elk Hunting Season this year. Corey reveals he shot his elk with a frontal shot and we delve into that for a bit. Corey shares a few tips and tricks and what types of arrows and broad heads he used this year.

On this Episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with my uncle Kevin Call--joint owner of High Point Outfitters in Arizona. Kevin runs highpoint with his son Blake and their longtime friend John Adams. Kevin knows Arizona--he’s been hunting Arizona since the 70’s.
I grew up watching my uncle Kevin hunt all over the West killing monster mule deer, elk, antelope and more. I grew up seeing photos of his hunts and his hunting stories in magazines and hearing hunting stories at family reunions. I can still remember the first time I walked into his giant garage--there were deer and elk antlers from floor to ceiling of all the animals he’s taken. To me, those antlers represent a mountain of time spent in the outdoors and a vast amount of collected experiences. In this podcast Uncle Kevin shares his thoughts on hunting AZ. My Dad and Kevin share some special memories of hunting Arizona in areas like the Kaibab and the Arizona Strip when they were younger. We talk about guiding and being an outfitter and why he does it.
And we learn about Kevin’s favorite game camera--after all, High Point Outfitters runs about 200 game cameras all year. Coincidentally, I bought a couple of the cameras recommended after recording this podcast and I’m quite pleased with their performance.
If you’re listening to this podcast you might want to take a moment to watch the beginning to see some pictures of some amazing Arizona elk, deer and antelope.

Episode 36: PART 1
Which type of Hunting Partner are you? In typical Aron Snyder fashion he has come up with some different types. For example "The Grass is Always Greener Guy" - There is always going to be something better over the next ridge. Or "Mr. Rogers" - He's always happy and positive to the point of annoyance for some. Or are you the "Through Hiker"? All go, no quit. Or "The Hunting Nazi"? He shoots everything out from under you. He's the first guy to break rank. Find out which one you are and which type of partners you have.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we are back in Tamarack Idaho for the annual NW Mountain Challenge Archery Shoot and we talk to Ty Stubblefield and Josh Keller of Born and Raised Outdoors. We discuss Ty’s new role with BackCountry Hunters & Anglers as Chapter Coordinator and the importance of conservation, the threat against our hunting lifestyle and how we can join the fight to preserve our traditions, values and way of life. If you’re not familiar with Born and Raised Outdoors you should take some time to get to know these boys through their films which are some of the most real, honest and entertain elk hunting films I’ve seen.

This week on Gritty Bowmen we travel to Tamarack Idaho for the annual NW Mountain Challenge Archery Shoot and we talk to Corey Jacobsen, 7-time world champion elk caller, elk killing machine, and Owner of Extreme Elk Magazine, and most importantly, Husband and father to 3 awesome kids, Isaac, Jessi, and Samuel. Young Isaac is quite the elk caller—here he is giving my hunting partners, Ben and Anthony a lesson on how to bugle with attitude.
The NW Mt. Challenge was a total blast. After Corey graciously spent the late-afternoon shooting this podcast with us, we had the pleasure of spending the evening shooting our bows on the night course with he and his family. We met is lovely wife Jennifer, who is super cool for many reasons, not least of which because she’s an archer and shoots a cool bow. The night shoot at Tamarack was super cool and was fun for the whole family. Donnie Drake, Corey’s longtime friend and hunting partner shot the night course with us and we were able to get a glimpse of the brotherhood these men share.
In today’s podcast you’ll hear about what makes a good hunting partner. Corey will tell you how long he’s hunted with his hunting partners and why. And you’ll learn about things such as Corey’s dream situation for killing big bulls.
If you missed the NW Mt. Challenge in Tamarack ID you can still attend the NW Mt. Challenge at the Hoodoo Ski Resort in Oregon July 24th, 25th, & 26th. There are 4, 3-D courses on the mountain, including a kids course. There are archery competitions. Raffles and more. The Full Draw Film Tour will be at Hoodoo Saturday night with a presentation of the film tour on a big outdoor screen. And you can see our film there. We hope to see you at Hoodoo!
“You think 100 sit-ups is a bunch? Hike 4 miles with that gorilla hanging off you. Your abs are so burnt!”
This week on Gritty Bowmen, shockingly! Aron Snyder and I talk about backpacks. Aron gives his tips on how to properly wear and fit a backpack. Aron tells me that “the chest strap is not a come-along choker strap” and shares other such nuggets of information. And as usual, Aron does not keep his opinions to himself and neither do I. So, we tried not to offend anyone but we probably failed. As Aron said, “For the most part you’re going to lose something with heavy weight hauling with an ultra-light pack.”
The audio on my microphone was a bit off and there are a couple of glitchy spots but they don’t last too long—Aron’s audio comes across loud and clear.

This week on Gritty Bowmen we meet again with Aron Snyder of Kifaru International to talk about why your pack is so freakin’ heavy. At the end of this podcast you will know what Aron does to lighten his backpack. As Aron explains in this podcast, most guys pack for Siberia but go to Africa. Aron will also teach you how to modify your gear to make it lighter without sacrificing function. But you’ve got to be carful doing this. As Aron said, “Brian, “When you start hacking parts off your pack and you think you ‘might’ be wrong--you’re probably wrong. One of my army instructors told me that. But if that thing has been in your pack or part of your pack for 3 years and you’ve never used it... hack that thing off like Hannibal Lecter!”
This podcast is chalk full of what I call Aron Snyderisms. Like, “ounces make pounds and pounds make pain.” And “usually it’s the bad-ass person who goes too ultralight and turns out to be the dumb-ass person.”
The podcast has some glitchy spots but it’s not too bad and the content is well-worth the time. In the last 30 minutes of theis podcast Aron and I go off on a tangent and talk about sponsorships in the hunting and outdoor industry--we talk about what we don’t like about sponsorships and why. And Aron tells me what his favorite clothing choices are right now, right down to the brand name. Which, will probably make some people in the hunting industry mad at him. Sorry Aron.

“It’s kind of like building a building... you can have quality, quantity, and cost-efficiency and you can have any two of those you want but you can’t have all 3. It’s the same with paying the piper for lightweight.”
“First Lite makes a jacket we call the “unpronounceable”... the oounncompadre.”
Question: “What is a woobie and when do you use it?” Answer: “Oh I know. And what’s horrible is Kifaru also makes a Doobie, which is probably because Patrick was a hippie.”

"In a way... it's almost like life. You can take lessons you learn in the field and apply them to life and vice versa. There is so much you can learn with a bow in your hand." -- South Cox
I just returned from a weekend scouting trip with my 12-year old daughter and my niece. Camping and hiking with them in the wilderness, sitting by the campfire and swimming in a cold mountain stream was rejuvenating. It felt good to get away from the pavement and the city and enjoy the outdoors. And for some reason, my scouting trip this weekend had me thinking about this film with South. I have fond memories of this visit to Stalker Stickbows. From the first moment I met South I liked him. We met at the Full Draw Film School in April 2014. My wife was diagnosed with cancer not long after that and South would PM me on Facebook every now and then to see how she was doing. South barely even knew me then. It was a very kind thing to do. Anyway, tonight I was just thinking about life and my kids and the peace I feel in the outdoors and it got me thinking about some of the things South talks about in this video so I had to come home and watch it again. I'm glad I did. If you haven't seen this film, take a minute and slow down. Set aside some quiet time and grab a cup of tea or whatever you like to drink and sit back and watch. Maybe South will inspire you to try your hand had a traditional bow. But if he doesn't, I hope his words and his views get you thinking about spending more of your time connected to nature instead of technology. Stay gritty.

That’s it for EPISODE 4 of the Gritty Bowmen podcast. Part 2 of Are you a Stalker? Stalking Monster Mule Deer w/South Cox & Stalker Stickbows.
I got a lot of information out of these two podcasts with South on how to kill a monster mule deer. In summary, South explained the need to have a positive attitude and Mental Toughness. Another key to his success is that South gets remote with a focus on wilderness areas. And South looks for hunting grounds with what he calls “Micro Topography” . South likes to stalk from above. This helps him with wind. Because deer bedded on hillsides tend to face downhill and therefore don’t see you coming. South also finds it easier to sneak in on the animal from above when you need to stay low or crawl. Unlike some hunters, South likes to wait until the animal beds down before he stalks his deer. South recommends buying the best glass you can afford. South stressed the importance of mounting your binoculars to a tripod. And when glassing, don’t just glass from the main ridgeline. Walk out on the finger-ridges that branch off the main ridge line and glass to the end of the finger ridge. South likes lightweight boots that have soft soles—he finds them quieter and they help him when hopping through a boulder field. He mentioned Solomon boots, the Lowa Zephyr, Lowa Renegade, and one of his favorites, the Ahnu Elk Ridge Mid. At 70 to 100 yards from his quarry, South sheds his boots and dons a thick pair of socks to silently close the distance. But he recommends marking the location of your boots somehow so you don’t lose your boots. And South likes Smoke in a Bottle brand wind checker. South carries 3 things in his front right pocket. Chapstick, lens cloth, and Smoke in a bottle.
