Oklahoma center fielder Kyler Murray was drafted by the Oakland Athletics with the ninth overall pick in the MLB Draft on Monday night. Shortly after, he announced that he fully intends to be in Norman this fall to play football for the Sooners. Does putting his Major League Baseball career aside for football mean that Murray is going to be the starting quarterback for Oklahoma this fall? Rich and Matt have different opinions on that. We also break down the remainder of the offensive positions for Oklahoma this fall. Before we get to football we discuss the baseball and softball seasons coming to a close and, weâ??ve even got some NBA talk. Weâ??re back with another episode of the Sooner Nation Podcast. We started this episode rehashing bad memories of what went wrong in the Rose Bowlâ?¦all because a listener asked us to. From there we got into a pretty healthy debate on the possibility of trading Russell Westbrook. One of us thinks itâ??s a great idea and the other canâ??t think of a worse idea than getting rid of the face of the franchise. Feel free to weigh in on that one. Athlon came out with their quarterback rankings and weâ??ve got an issue with just about every one of them. Oklahoma Baseball has two weekends left in the regular season and Softball is heading to the Big 12 Tournament with the top seed.
Baker Mayfield was the #1 overall selection in last weekend's NFL Draft but Matt doesn't think he should play as a rookie. The question is, does his argument make sense and can he get Rich to buy in. Orlando Brown and Mark Andrews were also selected by the Baltimore Ravens and we've got some thoughts on that Dynamic Duo as well. We also can't ignore what's going on with the Oklahoma City Thunder either. The work train wreck comes to mind here and we think it may just be the perfect description. Paul George, Carmelo Anthony, and Billy Donovan could all be gone next season...but then again they could also all be back. We definitely get into that discussion. Finally, baseball and softball are winding down their regular season so we discuss what's going on with those respective teams as well.
Rich and Matt are back to talk Oklahoma sports. On tap for this episode is Oklahoma City's disastrous performance and Russell Westbrook's epic meltdown in Game 4. There's going to be some fallout from the Thunder's tanking in the playoffs so we visit those possibilities as well. Oklahoma Baseball is better than it has been but by how much? After taking an unplanned hiatus, the Sooner Nation Podcast is making it's return to the internet. What that means is that we were finally able to line up schedules and equipment to get something recorded, and we hope that you like it. On tap for this discussion, other than spring sports, was Buddy Hield's decision to return for his senior season or jump to the NBA. It might be added that he did participate in a team practice on Tuesday. Beyond that we ranked the things that we're looking for in Saturday's Red/White Game to conclude Oklahoma's spring football practices. Just about every aspect of the team was covered (sorry special teams) as well as some general thoughts on the coaching staff. Does OU really have an answer at tight end? Oklahoma won the second game against Kansas by a final score of 6-3 on Friday night to secure their second series win in conference play. After the game we were able to catch up to Anthony Hermelyn (2-for-2, 1 R, 1 RBI), Kolbey Carpenter (3-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) Coach Hughes, and winning pitcher Alec Hansen (6 IP, 2 R, 5 W, 9 SO).
Following Oklahoma's 7-0 win over Central Arkansas on Tuesday night we were able to catch up with starting pitcher Adam Choplick, head coach Pete Hughes, and second baseman Kolbey Carpenter.
Fran Fraschilla breaks down Oklahoma's Sweet 16 match-up against Michigan State. The ESPN Color Analyst shares his thoughts with us on the poor performance from the Big 12 Conference in the NCAA Tournament and which team surprised him the most by getting bounced early. He also weighs in on West Virginia's chances of upsetting the Kentucky Wildcats. In addition to his thoughts on Oklahoma's match-up with the Spartans, he talks about the role that Frank Booker plays coming off the bench, NBA draft prospects and analysis for Oklahoma players and his thoughts on where Lon Kruger ranks among current coaches. Of course I also had to ask him about James Fraschilla's trick shot videos and his perspective as the father of an Oklahoma walk-on.
Oklahoma dropped the first game of their weekend series against Purdue on Friday night. Afterwards we were able to catch up with Sheldon Neuse, Coach Hughes, and starter Jake Elliott.
The Oklahoma Sooners pounded their way to the tenth win of the season with a 22-run performance against Arkansas-Little Rock. Afterwards we got audio from Sheldon Neuse, Craig Aikin, Corey Copping, and coach Pete Hughes. Aikin had a record-setting day six hits and his first career home run. Neuse also went yard and Copping fanned seven batters in five innings of work.
The Oklahoma Sooners started the 2015 college baseball season with a 6-1 win over Notre Dame on Friday night. As you can imagine afterwards the players and coaches were elated to see the season start out with a big win. We were able to catch up with Craig Aikin, Coach Pete Hughes, winning pitcher Jake Elliott and newcomer Alex Wise.
Oklahoma men's basketball coach spent some time talking with CCM's Matt Hofeld to talk about the Sooners current five-game win streak, what he likes about his team right now, Ryan Spangler shooting three point shots, TaShawn Thomas going from being the star in Houston to being just one of the guys, the maturation of his guards, and going home to Kansas State this weekend.
