Several big names have defined the Supreme Court: John Marshall, Roger Taney, Earl Warren, Antonin Scalia, Ruth Bader Ginsburg,... But there is another Justice who has arguably been one of the most influential in the past 20+ years: Justice Samuel Alito.
From his new book Revenge For the Sixties, award-winning journalist and former executive director of POLITICO Peter Canellos shares the fascinating upbringing, philosophy, and style that made Justice Alito a pioneer of the conservative legal movement. He also provides a preview of his other book about another interesting Justice named John Marshall Harlan, who notably was the lone dissenter in Plessy v. Ferguson.

Sports are important activities that teach life skills to countless people every day. But when politics enters the arena, the integrity of sports is in the balance. In recent years, there have been instances of biological men self-identifying as female, prompting many to be concerned about the future of female sports.
This episode is an opportunity to hear from two young volleyball players, Kendall Lewis and Sia Liilii, and their experiences standing up for their teammates and fellow female athletes. Hear how they are responding with action to uphold Title IX and protect women's sports.

The Jussie Smollett case initially made people aware of racial issues, but the event turned out to be a highly publicized hate crime hoax. Why do race-based policies fail to realistically achieve success in solving social issues?

But at Penn State and beyond, these concepts represent something bigger: a world in conversation about how people connect with racial, ethnic, and cultural groups.
Two Penn State sociology professors Dr. Laurie Mulvey and Dr. Sam Richards join the podcast to discuss what makes civil dialogue so valuable in understanding people's social identities around the world. Dr. Mulvey is the Director of the World in Conversation Center for Public Diplomacy, which has engaged in open inquiry and non-partisan engagement with more than half a million participants over two decades. Dr. Sam Richards teaches publicly broadcasted SOC 119, the world's largest race and ethnicity course with 800 students enrolled per semester and nearly 400,000 Youtube subscribers.

In this first-ever in person F&FC interview, Hannah Adams is a childhood cancer survivor and advocate whose personal story and public service has touched numerous children and families. A University of Alabama graduate student, she has won multiple titles and awards in the Miss America Organization, including Miss Florida's Outstanding Teen 2019-20 and her current title Miss Phenix City 2025.

The Tea Party may feel like a long time ago, but was it really just a movement? Or was it a much larger phenomenon? Dr. Rachel Blum, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Oklahoma and the Carl Albert Center, previews her book about the Tea Party's takeover of the Republican Party and shares how the Tea Party became one of the most disruptively consequential political movements in recent U.S. political history.

Exactly four years ago, Jen Daulby was on the House floor and evacuated with Members of Congress as rioters amassed and wreaked havoc on our nation's Capitol.
Just a few hundred feet away, Sherman was in the Cannon House Office Building and was twice evacuated by U.S. Capitol Police due to a bomb threat and reports of intruders.
The real heroes that day were and always will be the brave police officers who risked their lives to defend the Capitol and American democracy.

Today (July 13, 2024) is a tragic day in American history. A former president and current major presidential candidate Donald Trump was tragically shot at a political rally near Butler, PA earlier this afternoon. Luckily by the grace of God, he is expected to be all right.
We are better than this.

Oscar Underwood, a Democrat U.S. Senator from Alabama 1915-1927, gained so much political capital during the Wilson administration and was considered a potential candidate for POTUS or VP. But his stance against the most powerful white supremacist group forced him to make his party go on record whether the party platform supports or opposes radicalism and extremism. But they are not the first generation of conservatism that wanted stronger U.S. foreign policy and security in the wake of Communist China. Utah Army National Guard Major Brent Taylor, a lifelong public servant and serviceman, was serving as mayor of North Ogden, UT when he embarked on his fourth deployment to Afghanistan. But on November 3, 2018, Maj. Taylor was tragically killed by an insider attack in Kabul, making him the first sitting U.S. politician to be killed in action since the Civil War.
The United States lost an American hero and patriot that day, but his legacy still lives on to inspire service leadership among many more Americans. "Robert J. Walker" may not ring a bell for most Americans today, but a highly undemocratic "constitution" for the Kansas Territory struck a chord with a once-promising politician in the Democratic Party. Although a pro-slavery advocate, Walker was arguably a precursor to the Democratic party's Civil War schisms and an early supporter of the Union before Lincoln was even elected. Learn why this prominent Democrat wrote a defiant resignation letter to then-Secretary of State Lewis Cass and thoroughly explained his reasons for siding with the will of the people of Kansas and the national interest.

Roosevelt's pen on February 19, 1942, tens of thousands of Japanese Americans were forced to leave their livelihoods and sent to imprisonment camps with the most horrid conditions. Almost 80 years after such grave injustices, America stands as a nation that can recognize its wrongs and do what is right for current and future generations. As President Ronald Reagan remarked about the Civil Liberties Act of 1988:
"So what is most important in this bill has less to do with property than with honor, for here we admit a wrong. Here, we reaffirm our commitment as a nation to equal justice under the law."
