Many common complaints that people have about joint pain and belly fat are not actually normal symptoms of aging but indicators of an underlying autoimmune disorder. After seeing over 40 doctors about the symptoms she was experiencing, Brandi Muilenberg finally discovered that she had Hashimoto’s, and she joins us today to talk about how she used functional medicine to treat herself after ten years of suffering. In our conversation, Brandi gives us her advice on how to treat yourself if you are experiencing symptoms like hers through diet, sleep, and stress management. Just like financial budgeting allows us to have more control over our money, emotional budgeting allows us to have more control over our feelings. Our brains are processing instruments, and we can think about our emotions like files. In order to effectively process our emotions, we need to develop the equivalent of an emotional filing system, and this realm is exactly where today’s guest’s field of expertise lies. Paul Sambataro is a retired school psychologist and the creator of the concept of Emotional Budgeting (on which he has authored two books). In today’s episode, Paul and I discuss the fact that a behavior always has a root cause, and how, through using his methodology, we can help our children (and ourselves) appropriately deal with these underlying triggers through changing our brains!

Key Points From This Episode:

  • An introduction to today’s guest, Paul Sambataro.
  • The three fundamental factors that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on.
  • Paul’s lifelong educational journey in the psychological realm.
  • A different perspective on mental health issues.
  • An explanation of the concept of emotional budgeting, which was developed by Paul.
  • How our brain deals with emotional information.
  • Advice for parents on how they can help their children regulate their emotions.
  • Examples of how people self-medicate when they are struggling to handle their emotions, and the dangers of this.
  • What you will learn from applying the concepts in Paul’s Emotional Budgeting workbook.
  • The importance of acknowledging and addressing your child’s behavior.
  • Statistics which highlight the limited healing capacity of counseling when it is the sole intervention method.
  • Differentiating between structure and discipline, and why Paul advocates for the former.
  • Paul explains how we can physiologically change our brains.

However, did you know that the reason breast milk is so beneficial to human beings is because of something called Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMO)? If you weren’t breastfed, or aren’t able to breastfeed, don’t worry; scientists have figured out how to create HMO in a lab (which they have called HiMO). In today’s episode, we are joined by Beau Berman, who is an expert in these very important prebiotics and has some fascinating knowledge to share with us today about how HMO works, and what research shows about how HiMO can impact older children and adults!

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Beau shares the career journey which has led him to his current role as an expert in a vital component of breast milk.
  • Some of the differences between children who are breastfed and those who aren’t.
  • What breast milk consists of.
  • When the power of human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) was uncovered.
  • The equivalent of HMO that has been developed by scientists; HiMO
  • How HMO confers immunity to infants.

Skin health is more than skin deep! In today’s episode, we are joined by acne nutritionist and health influencer, Katie Stewart, who, after overcoming her own struggles with acne, is now on a mission to help others do the same. A common response to acne is to treat it with topical skin products, but these don’t get to the root cause of the problem, and, for various reasons which Katie explains, can often make it worse. Instead, we need to look after our insides, because the health of our gut and our liver is directly correlated with the health of our skin. There are numerous internal causes of the external break-outs that so many people experience, and it’s important that you figure out what is going on in your body specifically before you decide to go on a juice cleanse or take a probiotic that was recommended by a friend. Stress is another major cause of skin problems, and learning how to set boundaries is also a vital part of healing from the inside out.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Katie’s personal experience with acne.
  • The lightbulb moment when Katie realized acne was a symptom, and what she did about it.
  • Examples of gut health issues that can cause skin problems.
  • How to determine if you have low stomach acid, and ways that you can increase it.
  • An explanation of what small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is.
  • Toxins that we apply to our skin, and how these impact our liver.
  • What happens to our skin when we take supplements without opening up elimination pathways.
  • Foods that will help your liver, and therefore help your skin.
  • The connection between your gut, your liver, and your hormones.
  • How stress affects your skin.
  • Another reason to add to the list of why sleep is so important.
  • Numerous reasons that you should not pop your pimples, and what to do instead.
  • A database you can use to work out the toxicity levels of your skincare products.
  • Instead of buying expensive products, work with an acne specialist.
  • The age range of the clients who Katie sees.
  • Recommendations for people who are struggling with psoriasis.

Today, Stephenie Farrell and Karen Hong sit down with Monika Tupholme, a performance, and functional nutrition and fitness expert. This 47-year-old mother of two has over 25 years of experience in the field, working with busy, athletic women over 40 who feel stuck with their health goals. She is the founder and creator of the 3M System — a plan for revving up your over-forty metabolism – and a former professional volleyball player who is all about living a healthy, natural lifestyle while not forgetting to kick back and have a burger now and then. Monika gets into the importance of time management for busy moms, highlighting the need to make time for self-care and the things that bring you joy since these are the number one antidotes to stress and anxiety. She is careful, however, to distinguish between active and passive self-care, although there is a place for both. For her, self-care needs to not only fill your bucket but also train you to better cope with stressful situations. Tuning in, listeners will also hear about the lifestyle and mindset values she hopes to teach her children and the biggest wins in her life and career.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Monika talks about managing her kids in the pandemic and having children later in life.
  • The shift that happens when you hit 40 and the community Monika has created around it.

  • The idea that food is not only fuel but also an expression and experience of culture and life.
  • How her mentors, coaches, and family inspired and motivated her to build her business.
  • The challenge of managing your time as a mother, partner, business owner, and athlete.
  • Hear some of the habits and mindsets that Monika would like to pass down to her kids.

  • Thinking of self-care as an activity that fills your bucket and trains you to deal with stressors.

Our guest on the show today is Nancy Tran, a graduate of the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition (CSNN). Nancy is also a certified strength and conditioning coach, and it was her own struggles with fatigue, brain fog, and binge eating disorder that prompted her to take charge of her health and become a holistic nutritionist. Her greatest joy is helping others achieve their goals, break bad habits, and improve their overall health. In this episode, she talks to Stephenie and Karen about exchanging her career in finance for one in health and fitness, why CSNN was her school of choice, and what specific areas she specialized in. We then dive into the topic of genetic testing, uncovering how it is administered, what components are looked at, how accurate it is, and how long someone typically has to wait for results. She also gives some insights into the procedures around food sensitivity testing, the supplementation she recommends for all her clients, and the importance of drinking enough wēater.
