He is dedicated to reframing mental health distress as a potential spiritual marker. Joel has lived in Nepal and Israel and is also a poet expressing the landscape of the mystical elements of our human beings. He believes world religion, poetry, spirituality, and meditation encompass the most vital aspects of our mind and life. Everything is flux, everything is poetry. His other passions include the intersection of poetry, spirituality, science, and phenomenology shared and disparate in the human experience, with the transformative power of self-inquiry and introspection through contemplative and meditative practices. David Woods Bartley has seen his fair share of successes and setbacks, from directing a nationally recognized nonprofit to battling a life-threatening mental illness. Now he’s speaking with Chris Meek about what he describes as the brutal knock-down, drag-out fight he experienced with clinical depression, which led him to attempt suicide and now devote his life to opening the doors to the possibility of good mental health and wellness to everyone. As an international mental health educator, trainer and advocate, David instructs others on the “why” of suicide and the “how” of hope. He believes that we all must take the initiative to understand what mental illness feels like for others, focus on the “why” surrounding those feelings and subsequently why people commit suicide. He also reminds us that when struggling with mental health it is easy to believe that everything you think is true. But suicide is not about truth or fact, as David discusses, it is ultimately about needing faith and the “how” of hope. This hour of Next Steps Forward focuses on the problems and solutions of suicide, the three most important words of mental health (hint: connection, connection, connection), and how to ask the right questions to those who may be struggling.
Michael Gier - actor, producer, and director - is attracted to projects that change people’s lives. This week on Next Steps Forward, Michael joins Chris Meek to speak about the life-changing documentaries he directed and produced, award-winning “Wounded Heroes” and the follow-up documentary “Healing the Heroes of 9/11.” “Wounded Heroes” focuses heavily on alternative treatments for those veterans, police officers and first responders living with post-traumatic stress (PTS), including RTM Therapy, a visualization technique which helps individuals retrieve and then alter memories, and Trauma Resiliency Protocol, another technique currently being deployed to police and fire departments across the nation. An advocate for peer-to-peer help, Michael will speak to the importance of trust in the treatment process and how seeking help from a fellow veteran or first responder can allow individuals to feel better understood and feel as though they aren't at risk of losing their purpose. With a mission to educate others about the reality that those living with PTS can find healing, Michael proves that “finding unicorns,” i.e. people who have moved past their PTS diagnosis and symptoms, really is possible. Because his films focus on next steps for success, he is certainly a fitting guest for an audience that tunes in to discover their own next steps in life!

Michelle Rogers, author of Trans Right, speaks with Chris Meek about how growing up with conservative values shaped her political philosophy and continues to do so today despite her journey of turning transgender later in life. Michelle embodies what it means to be both transgender and strongly conservative, a sector of individuals that is often overlooked and a reminder that their are many different voices and experiences of those in the transgender community. Though Michelle’s story may seem like one solely of change, it is a reminder of the reality that becoming transgender doesn’t mean that everything about a person will change - often change mainly occurs in regards to gender. Michelle will speak on important topics concerning the intersection of her conservative beliefs and transition, including why she believes it has become a common misperception that individuals who transition or those who support the transgender community have left-leaning political inclinations. Her message is powerful: transgender individuals are not trying to tear the lives of others apart, instead they simply want to live with dignity. Next Steps Forward host Chris Meek was at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001. He was one of the fortunate ones able to survive the carnage of that day. He walked out of the city with the mass of humanity that had no way home except to help each other take their next steps forward. Surviving one of the most horrific days in American history, Chris made the commitment to give back to those who risk their lives on behalf of fellow Americans. As men and women left to fight the war abroad and returned home with both physical and mental wounds, Chris immediately understood the importance of providing meaningful and innovative medical technologies to those wounded veterans. Thus, SoldierStrong was born, a nonprofit organization committed to helping veterans take their own next steps forward. Now, 20 years later, the rapidly unfolding events as the U.S. military leaves Afghanistan have affected us all, especially the brave heroes who served in that country in defense of democracy. In order to better understand the profound mental health impact that the situation abroad is currently having on post-9/11 veterans, Chris invites you to join him as he sits down with Ret. Army Reserve Sgt. Dan Rose, Ret. Army Cpt. Meaghan Mobbs, Marine Sgt. Chris Merkle and Dr. Albert Skip Rizzo, director of medical virtual reality at the University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technologies, to discuss the mental health effects stemming from Afghanistan's downfall, their viewpoints on the withdrawal and what can be done to support those who may be hurting.
Janet Baker is an Assistant General Counsel at S&P Global Inc. and certified Information Privacy Professional for both Europe and the United States. But she is also a woman that wears many hats, one of which gives her profound ability as a storyteller, especially in her re-telling of the very true and very heart-wrenching story of the Brownsville Texas Incident of 1906. For those in the audience who may not know, 167 Black soldiers were accused, without trial or due process, of shooting up the town of Brownsville and were subsequently discharged from the 25th Infantry without honor by President Theodore Roosevelt. Baker will recount to program host Chris Meek her father’s lifelong connection to the incident. Lt. Col. William Baker first witnessed the death of a Brownsville soldier as a young boy, then went on to serve on an assignment to investigate the Brownsville incident through his work at the Pentagon, finally leading him to spend several decades researching the incident for his book “The Brownsville Incident of 1906: The True and Tragic Story of a Black Battalion’s Wrongful Disgrace and Ultimate Redemption,” which lays out evidence for the Brownsville soldier’s innocence. The book can be found on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Brownsville-Texas-Incident-1906-Battalions/dp/1943267715. Janet Baker’s re-telling of the Brownsville Incident and her father’s lifelong connection to the particular moment in history is a reminder of the power that can be found in storytelling, as well as a reminder that life can often be cyclical and how many of us are called to our true purpose over and over again if we are open and willing.
