A Sense of Community
Sports have always been part of college culture because it unites students. In addition, the university spirit and solidarity bind everyone together despite differences. So Travis felt a sense of community when he started watching the Florida Gators football games. Everyone cheers in unison for their team, and there is belongingness. Having experienced these football games became a defining moment for Travis. One of the reasons he chose to take the path to corporate America was because he was taking a Real Analysis class. Yet, Travis realized he had no time for watching football – a thing he liked – and he was stuck doing math proofs since he had to. That made Travis pivot away from it and end up becoming a student loan consultant. The community he found within the Florida Gators, even only as a mere spectator, randomly touched his life in many ways.
Sports and College Applications
When a college team wins the championship, it brings pride to the university, even bragging rights. Besides, college is also a formative moment of youth that defines what would be in the adulthood stage. Travis says that from his experience on campus, it was happiness and excitement for him to see all the successful people around him. He was there at the time that Tim Tebow was the star player for the Florida Gators. Travis articulates that when a college football team is doing well, there is a surge of university applications. In contrast, it is the opposite when a college football team is in the dumps; university applications are low. It is one of the reasons why Travis thinks college football, in general, is interesting. There is the fun social benefit of higher education given the atmosphere and entertainment to the students.

Who You Gonna Call?
Ghostbusters first came out in cinemas in 1984. As a child, Wally was at first terrified of the film due to the fact that A Nightmare on Elm Street was also released around that time. The Ghostbusters film did not appeal to Wally at first as he did not find it funny. Additionally, the cartoon series was not even comedic at all but deadly serious. It was a horror show, after all, similar to Are You Afraid of the Dark. Wally only realized the humor in Ghostbusters as a teenager. He hated it at first because his brother liked it, but it eventually grew on him when he watched the VHS his brother bought. Now, Wally credits Ghostbusters as his influence on comedy. Its humor is all situational and contextual. The comedy is natural and makes sense; that is why it works.
Old Versus New
An all-female cast reboot of the Ghostbusters film was released in 2016, and it received backlash. Wally says there are two groups of people from that film. The first group is those who do not want anything new, and the second group is those who expected Ghostbusters to be all the same. As a result, they regarded the 2016 movie as garbage because it was nothing like the original. But looking at the brighter side, Wally says it still brought people into it, that it introduced Ghostbusters to them, just not in a good way. The new version did not necessarily remove the old version. The original still exists, and it is good because those people who knew of the reboot can still go back to the roots.

Wally Phelps is an award-winning comedy writer of the 2016 short film Monsters Anonymous. It tells about the classic monsters in a group therapy session coming to terms with the fact that they aren’t scary anymore. Wally is also a stand-up comedian.

Hooked In
Tanner discovered A Time To Kill when he was 16. Although he was not an avid reader, he became fond of the book. For Tanner, the John Grisham novel appealed to him because of the same Southern culture he grew up with. The book reflected much of Tanner’s identity that he could not put it down. It felt as if he was at home. He spent so much time reading the first chapter, and the scene laid out in full detail was his favorite. Having read it twice, Tanner remembers how he envisioned himself becoming a lawyer because of the influence brought by Grisham’s novel. The book also became his escape at the time he faced trouble within the family. His parents divorced, and he was separated from his brother, who went to college. A Time To Kill immersed Tanner into a world where he forgot his problems at the moment.

Tanner Stewart is a reporter and weekend morning anchor at WEAR Channel 3 News. Before moving to Florida, Tanner worked at WXXV News 25 in Gulfport, Mississippi as the evening news anchor. One of his first memories of working in television news came in 2017, covering Hurricane Nate on the Mississippi Coast.
Born in Memphis and raised in the Smoky Mountains, Tanner is proud to call Pensacola his home outside the Volunteer State. Tanner is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Journalism and a minor in Political Science.
When not in the newsroom, Tanner enjoys reading, training for his first marathon, and exploring new places along the Emerald Coast!

A Product of Its Time
Cheap effects, weird-looking, and plainly old – that is what most people would describe science fiction movies from the 50s and 60s. But for Jared, these come with the complete package. The social, cultural, and political motives that influenced these films made Jared fascinated with them. After World War 2, American science fiction films boomed their way into popularity which paved the way to the ones at present. The 1950s was the golden age of science fiction. Jared was also amazed at the art form applied to the movies. Practical effects were the only technology available at that time, yet the intention behind and the arduous production process fueled his obsession. The movies also reflect society and show a visual representation of what people thought of the future. An artist’s imagination of how the world would look and the technology they believe would be possible is what Jared loves about these movies. While there are issues represented in these films that are now unacceptable, Jared reminds us that these are products of the time. It only shows how the times have changed, including what people believe in.
About Jared Miller:
Jared Miller lived in Pensacola for 13 years, where he attended middle school and high school. Currently, he is a library assistant at a local downtown library in Casa Grande, Arizona. When Jared is not arranging the shelves at the library, he is time traveling 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and warring with the worlds on The Day the Earth Stood Still in the 1950s and 60s science fiction films.

About Alex Gartner:
Alex is the Artistic & Executive Director of the Pensacola Children’s Chorus (PCC). Under his leadership since 2016, PCC’s programs have expanded to include 10 resident ensembles in addition to numerous initiatives which spread music throughout the community through innovative means of performance, creativity, and collaboration alongside service-based nonprofit organizations. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Alex previously served as the Assistant Director of the Cincinnati Youth Choir, ensemble-in-residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). He is an active composer, clinician, and conductor, and his choirs have performed in esteemed concert halls across the United States and internationally in China, Italy, and Ireland. A passionate educator, Gartner is a proponent of teaching people through music, a philosophy which he advocates as a presenter for many local, regional, and national conferences and professional development workshops across the country. He earned a Master of Music in Music Education from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Music (summa cum laude) in Music Education from CCM. He was the 2012 recipient of CCM’s John Leman Award for Outstanding Choral Leadership, and in 2017 was named a Rising Star by Pensacola’s Inweekly and a Champion for the Arts by the Escambia County School District.

About Stephen Wise:
Stephen Wise was born in Michigan. At age eight, friends of his invited him to participate in a "home movie" they were making. This set him on a course of filmmaking, where he wrote and directed his own films on Super 8 through his teen years. His family moved to Texas and then to Oklahoma, where he earned an Associate's Degree in Broadcasting. He then relocated to Orlando, where he was one of the first 30 students inducted into the inaugural class of the University of Central Florida's film program and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree cum laude.
With a love of writing, Stephen focused on screenwriting. He received accolades from Creative Screenwriting Magazine, Writer's Digest, and the Screenwriting Expo. He co-wrote a script for a proposed Batman film that was in consideration at Warner Bros. but was eventually passed over in favor of the reboot "Batman Begins." IFC listed his effort as one of the seven best unproduced Batman screenplays.

Robbie Harvey was born and raised in Pensacola, Florida. On the Gulf Coast, Robbie was involved in many entertainment projects during his career. So far, he has served as the announcer for Pensacola State College Basketball, USA Boxing, and now Five Flags Speedway.
Robbie has also worked for Blab TV and WSRE. And, as a former DJ, he has won an Addy Award, six Telly Awards, and was nominated twice for the Suncoast Emmy Awards. In addition, Robbie created the viral NAS Pensacola Heart and viral images from Hurricane Michael in Panama City. Recently, he has also gone viral on TikTok under “The Race Announcer” for his inspiring short-form videos.

Doctor Who has been around for so long that it has cemented itself into pop culture. But for Whovians (fans), it is more than just a pop culture icon. Elanders has been a percussion instructor, visual designer, adjudicator, and clinician for grade schools and independent ensembles in the Gulf Coast area since 2002.
Elanders holds an A.A. in Business and a B.S.B.A. with a concentration in Management from the University of West Florida. His collegiate performance credits include Pensacola State College and the University of West Florida Symphonic Band. As for professional marching credits, he has Eminence Indoor, Spirit Drum & Bugle Corps, and Music City Mystique.
