With a little over a week until the 2022 CHL Top Prospects game takes place March 23rd in Kitchener, HockeyProspect.com is pleased to release our updated ranking for the 2022 NHL Draft. It's beginning to look like the draft will indeed remain in Montreal as originally planned. The best part is that it will be an in person draft and the 2022 draft prospects can enjoy the full draft experience. With that said, we have released our updated 2022 NHL Draft list, our first list since December 26th.
The battle for the top spot on our list is tight with Shane Wright remaining first overall again on this updated list. Wright is holding off Conor Geekie, who remains our 2nd ranked prospect and Juraj Slafkovsky, who has moved up three spots from 6th overall on our December list to 3rd overall on this updated ranking.

Our first 2 minute podcast in well over a month but HP's Mark Edwards talked today about getting out of Ontario later this week and several other topics on his mind. Covid hasn't destroyed this season the way it did last year, but it has still caused it's share of headaches. Schedules are constantly changing.
Update: CHL has now released a press release this afternoon stating that the CHL Top Prospects Game will take place in Kitchener on March 23rd.

HockeyProspect.com has released our second 2022 NHL Draft Ranking of the season. This NHL Draft list follows up our previous ranking which was released back on October 25th, 2021.
Shane Wright is hanging tough as the player sitting atop of our December ranking. Wright and his Canadian teammates will get their World Junior Tournament underway later today vs the Czech Republic. When Wright returns to Kngston he will get enjoy an old linemate who has returned to the OHL. We are big fans of Zayde Wisdom and he recently got back into a game for Kingston prior to the shutdown. He played a role in helping Shane Wright have a great rookie OHL reason two years ago.
Two players who were on the outside looking into our top 32 back on October 25th both play for the Saginaw Spirit. Moving up to 10th overall is Pavel Mintyukov, a talented defender who has 6 goals and 16 assists for 22 points in 25 games at the Christmas break. His teammate, Matyas Sapovaliv, is a big lanky centre who is just beginning to fill out his frame. Matyas has 8 goals and 13 assists at the break, is skilled, very smart, strong in the faceoff circle and sits at 19th on our list.
Logan Cooley from the USNTDP, Danila Yurov, from Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the KHL and Owen Pickering from the Swift Current Broncos are all holding their spots in our top 5. You can watch Cooley and Yurov beginning today, as they both made their respective Country's World Junior rosters.
Check back soon as we'll have more audio posts coming in the days ahead. HP's Mark Edwards with some brief notes about this ranking release. https://hpwebmedia.s3.amazonaws.com/2021/12/26075929/december21_NHLDraft.mp3

HockeyProspect.com is pleased to release our first 2022 NHL Draft Ranking of the season. While we always release our very early list for the following year's draft in the previous drafts edition of our NHL Draft Black Book, the first release of the season arrives in late September or October.
Our first list is usually released slightly earlier but with the OHL not playing last season and starting a few weeks later this season, we decided to slightly delay this initial list.
Shane Wright is off to a bit of a slow start this season but he is still the player sitting at the top of our first ranking of the season. Wright was outstanding two years ago in his rookie season, posting 39 goals and 27 assists in just 58 games. Sitting second overall on our ranking is Conor Geekie from the Winnipeg Ice. Geekie had 23 points in 24 games in last year's shortened WHL season. This year he has 3 goals and 5 assists in 9 games so far. Filling out the rest of our top five on our ranking are Logan Cooley from the USNTDP, Danila Yurov, from Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the KHL and Owen Pickering from the Swift Current Broncos in the WHL. Pickering was not included in our top 32 ranking that we released back in June in our 2021 NHL Draft Black Book.
The number of viewings can range widely from one prospect to another on these early lists but this early ranking gives an idea of where player grades are trending with us in the early going.
We'll be releasing more audio this week to talk about some of the players on our initial list.
Audio- Mark Edwards talk's about the ranking release and scouting in the early season. https://hpwebmedia.s3.amazonaws.com/2022/10/25112534/2022NHLDraft_October25.mp3

A new podcast today and HockeyProspect.com's, Mark Edwards gives some info on the OHL and QMJHL Draft publications as well as some thoughts on a few players eligible for the NHL Draft. Mark gives some feedback and a few players that surprised him and other HP scouts when they saw where they were ranked on Bob McKenzie's 2021 NHL Draft rankings list released a few days after our own most recent list.
Mark Edwards commented on enjoying seeing Bob McKenzie's rankings. "I've been lucky enough on more than one occasion to see Bob just prior to him releasing his list and being able to give him my initial reactions right on the spot. Those previous year's lists were all in January and like everything else, this season is different. Like many NHL scouts, I enjoy seeing Bob's list and how it may differ from our own when it comes to some prospects."

HockeyProspect.com's Rachel Halliwell recently spoke to 2021 NHL Draft prospect, Mason McTavish, from the OHL's Peterborough Petes. Although the OHL has yet to play a game, Maon went overseas to play with EHC Olten. The Petes selected Mason 5th overall in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. Rachel spoke to Mason about this very different hockey season as well as many other topics. The 2021 NHL Draft season has obviously been very different from other draft years. As of this release, the Ontario Hockey League has still not played a game. Scouts in Ontario have been forced into watching scrimmages just to see some players in person. Travel is a challenge with less flights and games cancelled, sometimes while scouts are in the air. Scouts have been forced to watch video and plenty of it. We are included in this.
For this NHL Draft ranking, we were once again forced to include watching video of archived games, mainly the OHL. That said, we backed off ranking some OHL players with the hope being to include them on our final ranking after a short OHL season. Several OHL players have played overseas since our previous ranking, which almost seemed like a pre-season release, because so many players had not even played yet at that point. We will get to see some OHL'ers we've only seen in scrimmages up to now at the upcoming U18 in Texas.
We will have one more NHL Draft ranking release after today and that will be the ranking included in our 2021 NHL Draft Black Book. This ranking is 64 players deep. Our final list will be closer to a 100 player list. Members can login and view the full top 64 list here.
Owen Power remains our top ranked prospect but not only is it very tight for the top spot on our ranking, it is very tight in the top 10. New to our top 10 is our top ranked goalie from our November ranking, Sebastian Cossa. The Edmonton goaltender had not played a game yet back in November but now we've been able to add viewings from this season and stack them view his impressive showing last season. Jesper Wallstedt remains our 2nd ranked goalie and is also ranked inside our top 32.
One riser on this ranking is the Peterborough Petes Mason McTavish who also began playing after we released our initial ranking. We really liked his game last year but a big factor for the rise on this list is an improvement in his skating. Mason told us he worked hard in the off season to improve his quickness and the hard work has had good results. McTavish was 20th overall back in November, but has now cracked our top 10.
Aleksi Heimosalmi is new entry to our top 32, he's a mobile puck moving defenseman who displays excellent hockey sense. We're looking forward to seeing him play again on North American size ice.
Artyom Grushnikov has yet to play a game this season but we still decided to include him on this list. We will need to make a decision on where he fits on the final list based on the very real possibility of him not playing a game this season.

HockeyProspect.com has released our Quebec 70-player watchlist ahead of the 2021 QMJHL Draft. Our QMJHL Draft scouting group has been working since the month of August to cover the 2005-born crop of Quebec prospects, that saw action earlier this year when their pre-season was underway, from the month of August, up until the month of November, depending on restrictions in their respective regions.
The pre-season hockey that was played earlier this year, however, had a little bit of a different look than what you’d be used to. Three ten-minute periods, two teams of ten skaters and one goalie (two forward lines and two defence pairings). On top of that, no contact was allowed in these games, as any hit would result in a penalty, all this in an effort to contain any COVID outbreak during the games.
HockeyProspect scouts were allowed to attend the first few weeks of pre-season, until the arena doors were closed in another attempt to limit any COVID outbreak, which still didn’t stop our scouts from watching countless hours of tape and allowing us to put together this list, not only to use as a tool for once the regular season starts, whenever that may be, but also for our users to study ahead of this upcoming season and eventual 2021 QMJHL Draft.
The 70 players appearing on this list are broken into four groups: A-prospects (projected first rounders), B-prospects (projected second or third rounders), C-prospects (projected fourth to seventh rounders), with a small group of C+ players that separated themselves from the pack of C-prospects.
Top players that were recognized by our scouts during this first portion of the year were names you will find on our list (in no particular order) such as centremen Ethan Gauthier from the Magog Cantonniers, Mathieu Cataford, from the College Charles-Lemoyne Riverains and Vincent Collard, from the Jonquiere Elites. Gauthier, the son of ex-NHLer Denis Gauthier, is a player that has great hockey IQ on top of very good skill and elusiveness, who also plays a responsible 200-foot game. Cataford and Collard were also impressive, notably thanks to their skating (especially Cataford), size and goal scoring ability. On defence, scouts liked the game of Tristan Dassylva, from the College Notre-Dame Albatros, Isaac Fecteau, from the Culver Academy Eagles (USA) and Beck Majdell, from the Laval-Montreal Rousseau Royal, among others. All three mentioned are defencemen who skate very well and who can play both sides of the ice, but their offensive play obviously stood out for them to be rated as A-prospects. It is difficult to single out players at this time, but these names were all players that were very much appreciated in all scouting meetings and conversations between our staff.
The HockeyProspect QMJHL Draft Quebec based scouts did their homework, which led to this watchlist. It is an early watchlist, as mentioned, but it is one that was put together with hard work and attention to detail. Grading this crop of 2005-born players has been a fun challenge, but by the next time we release a QMJHL Draft list, we hope that it will be based off of regular season action. Not for our own sake, as we will always be able to scout, whether it is from the rink or from our homes thanks to the magic of video scouting, but for the sake of these young players who are just itching to get back out there, playing the game they love.
Rachel Halliwell speaks with HP Scout, Alex Pilote. https://hpwebmedia.s3.amazonaws.com/2022/02/01193845/2021QMJHLDraft_Jan30.mp3
Some quick notes on a few players... Isaac Fecteau – D – Culver Academy Eagles
Isaac Fecteau is an offensive defenceman from Trois-Rivières playing in Indiana for the Culver Academy Eagles who possesses great tools and attributes that he uses to his advantage. He is a gifted skater that loves to skate with the puck and who can skate it out himself as a one-man breakout. Fecteau is always very eager to join the rush as a fo...
The 2021 NHL Draft season is off to a very interesting start. Scouts struggling to see games and travel plans getting cancelled too often. The scouting fraternity has been forced to watch video and plenty of it. While we are seeing some games in person, we also have been forced to turn to video.
For the purposes of our first NHL Draft ranking of the season, we were forced to include watching video of archived games for leagues who have yet to begin their 2020/2021 seasons. This includes prominent leagues like the WHL and OHL. It makes it difficult to rank the players from those leagues when we don’t get to see their transformation after an off season of workouts as compared to the players we’ve seen in games this fall.
HockeyProspect.com’s Mark Edwards on this unusual start to the 2021 draft season. “It’s obviously different, but we need to adapt to the restrictions this season presents and move forward. Everyone is in the same boat, so we are just trying to be as business as usual as possible. I’ve spoken to a lot of scouts in recent weeks and while everyone wants to be back in the rinks full time, they are watching video, most do not enjoy using it and find it much less effective, but nevertheless Covid is forcing scouts to use it. I’m happy we started using Instat last season, it’s been very helpful again this season during this Covid scouting era.”
The Michigan Wolverines are well represented in our first ranking of the season. The Big 10 school has three players amongst our top 10 ranked players, including our #1 and #2 ranked players. The 6’5” 215 lbs blueliner Owen Power is our top ranked player, followed closely by his teammate, Kent Johnson. Both players just played their first weekend of games as NCAA players. Not far behind them at 8th overall is Matthew Beniers, who played down the middle on the same line as Kent Johnson this past weekend.
There is another member of the Hughes family in this draft class. This time around it’s Luke Hughes and like Quinn, he plays defense. While his brothers Jack and Quinn were both under the 6’0” threshold, Luke is much taller and if he's not 6’2”, he's not very far off. It probably won’t surprise you that he is a strong skater and has offensive talent. Luke rounds out the top three players on our first ranking of the season. The draft is rich with defensemen. Six of the players in our top 10 are defensemen and it doesn't stop there.
Our full top 64 2021 NHL Draft ranking is available to members and the top 32 is available for free. Please note that although we are scouting some players on the teams they have been loaned to (Logan Maillioux with SK Lejon as an example) the players are listed on our ranking with their original teams.

HP's Mark Edwards joined The Pipeline Show's Guy Flaming for the last time this season. Mark discusses HP's final 2017 NHL Draft Ranking and also some talk about the 2017 edition of the NHL Draft Black Book. Some of the prospects included in the discussion are Erik Brannstrom, Dylan Samberg, Jason Robertson, Jake Oettinger, Nico Hischier and Nolan Patrick. HP's Mark Edwards, Pipeline Show recorded June 13th https://s3.amazonaws.com/2017nhldraftaudio/Mark_Edwards_Jun13.mp3
From the 2017 NHL Draft Black Book
"Morris has a sturdy frame and strong on his skates which allows him to win puck battles and break away from defenders and shows power in driving the puck to the net. He is agile on his skates with good lateral steps and displays good speed..."
Quotable: “I am a fan of Mismash, but also like Norris too. He shows a balance with ability to make plays in all three zones and shows grit as well. He will dig the puck out of the corner and setup a game-winner but will also sacrifice his body to block a shot with under a minute to play. Michigan should do him well especially with some new leadership in place.” – HP Scout, Russ Bitely Josh Norris Interview https://www.hockeyprospect.com/2016/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Josh-Norris.mp3
From our 2017 NHL Draft Black Book...
"Despite lacking some strength, he has proven himself to be a high end scorer and point producer. His puck skills are fantastic and he has a high hockey IQ. He makes use of his great hockey sense in many facets of his game and it shows up with his creativity and the way he makes great passes out of nowhere. We love that he can both score and pass the puck to help create plays. He’s one of the best thinkers in the draft class and when you combine that with his skill it creates a very desirable package." Elias Pettersson Interview https://www.hockeyprospect.com/2016/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Elias-Pettersson.mp3
HockeyProspect.com scout Ryan Yessie joined Guy Flaming on the Pipeline Show to talk about a few OHL players. Included in this segment are Jason Robertson, Connor Timmins, Morgan Frost, Robert Thomas, Alex Formenton and Isaac Ratcliffe. HP's Ryan Yessie on the Pipeline Show June 6th, 2017 https://s3.amazonaws.com/2017nhldraftaudio/Ryan_Yessie_Jun7+.mp3
From the 2017 NHL Draft Black Book...
"Isaac was selected 15th overall by the Guelph Storm at the 2015 OHL Draft. Ratcliffe had a respectable rookie season after missing some time with injury. He played a reduced role for a large part of the season before being given second line ice late in the year. He progressed nicely this season more than quadrupling his point production."
"It's the size/skill combination that makes him a very interesting prospect for the next level. He has impressive moves one on one and can beat defenders both with protection ability and with his hands. He can take the puck to the net and has a very accurate shot. He has good vision and can create scoring chances for his linemates with good passing ability." Interview https://www.hockeyprospect.com/2016/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Isaac-Ratcliffe.mp3
