The Atlas Vampire was an unknown assailant who committed the unsolved "Vampire Murder" in Stockholm, Sweden. But the thing about vampires is that even though vampires are known as fictional, there has been a long history of humans in modern-day vampire cults who drink blood. Apparently it’s a clinical disorder though - it’s called Renfield’s syndrome, the obsession with drinking blood.

On May 4, 1932 31-year-old Lilly Lindeström was found in her flat in the Atlas area of Stockholm, and unfortunately her murder remains unsolved… the police initially thought it was a clear case of a prostitute murdered by a client, but they noticed a lot of saliva on Lilly’s neck and that she seemed to be exsanguinated even though there was very little blood at the scene and no noticeable puncture wounds to the body…

“At last Tom shrieked out, 'What -- old Tom dead! then I'm the King o' the Cats!' and rushed up the chimney and was nevermore seen.”

Passed down through many variations, the one thing in common about this fold tale is that maybe cats aren’t all they appear to be. Who knows, maybe that black and white one you’ve got curled up on the couch is actually the King of the Cats...

Rudy Bladel was born on December 8th, 1932 in Chicago to a railroad family. After he spent time studying at the Vocational High School in the South Side, he graduated in 1951, went to work at Rock Island as a fireman, and then enlisted in the army as a military engineer to serve in the Korean War. When he got back, he ended up back at the railroad company, but when they shifted its operations away from Michigan to a new yard in Indiana, and he was demoted, he decided to take revenge…

This is one of the most believable paranormal stories, in my opinion, and it all starts in the early 2000s when Julielle Kahn and her family moved into one of the renovated Victorian homes in Newton Massachusetts. Julielle, who was around 5 years old started telling stories of meeting a new friend. She said “She was an older woman with gray hair. She always kept it in a tight bun on the top of her head. She wore a long dress and always wore stockings. There would be either blue or a white sort of orb-light thing floating around, and a face would appear in it, and then eventually the whole body would appear, but her feet were never on the floor. She was always floating.” Spooky…

This story takes place at the Green Vault in Dresden, Germany. This museum was founded in 1723 by Agustus the Strong of Poland. In 2019, the museum had around 4000 items of jewelry and other gold/silver/ivory/pearl/precious metals and stones based items. Near the end of the year, on November 25th, there was a small fire on Augustus bridge (which was near the museum) at around 4am. This was the start of one of the largest museum heist in history…

Sloss furnaces is a National Historic Landmark located in Birmingham, Alabama that was open in the late 1800s to 1971. While it was operational it was a pig iron-producing blast furnace. In the early 1900s, James “Slag” Wormwood, was foreman of the “Graveyard Shift” and they had a skeleton crew of nearly 150 workers to keep the furnace going. Wormwood wanted to impress the bosses though, so he would make his workers take dangerous risks, forcing them to speed up production… In October of 1906, he was at the top of Big Alice, which was the highest blast furnace. He lost his footing and fell into a pool of melted iron ore. It is said that his body instantly melted. People say that he must have gotten dizzy from the methane gas but he had apparently never been to the top of the furnace in all his years working there. Ever since then there have been hundreds of reported paranormal experiences in the area…

I think one of the most well known museums in Boston is the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The museum itself was built with the guidance of Isabella Stewart Gardner, the art collector, because she wanted a place for her personal art collection. The museum opened to the public in 1903, and Gardner continued to expand the collection and arrange it until she died in 1924. She left the museum with a $3.6 million endowment when she passed away and her will basically said that the arrangement of the artwork should not be altered and no items were to be sold or bought into the collection. If you go to the museum today, you’ll see the empty frames of where the stolen paintings used to hang. Join us today for the story behind one of the most notorious heists in Boston history…

Love Has Won was started by Amy Carlson in the 2000s as a new religious movement. Love Has Won combines New Age spirituality with conspiracy theories (like QAnon) and other elements from the Abrahamic religion. She, and her followers, said she was a divine, 19 billion year-old being who had birthed all creation - who had been reincarnated 534 times, including as Jesus, Joan of Arc, Marilyn Monroe and Cleopatra, and would lead 144,000 people into a mystical "5th dimension.” She was also meant to be the queen of the lost continent of Lemuria, which was a place that was inside Mount Shasta in California. Also apparently Donald Trump was her father in a past life and she and Robin Williams spirit would chat sometimes as the Archangel Zadkiel. There are also mentions of Atlantis, the Anunnaki which were deities of the Sumerians and Assyrians and I think a couple other groups, and also reptilians which are reptilian humanoids or shapeshifting reptilian aliens who control the Earth by taking on human form and then using political power to manipulate society. They also believed that the world was run by a group of people determined to keep us in a low vibration state and that it is this groups responsibility to bring us into a higher vibration… If you want to learn more about this cult and its following, be sure to join us this week!

The pony express was open for 18 months, from April of 1860 through October 1861. And it covered approximately 2000 miles from St Joseph Missouri to Sacramento California. The riders on the Pony Express were said to have carried 35,000 pieces of mail over more than 650,000 miles back and forth during the 18 months. But this was an incredibly dangerous job, so much that the advert for the pony express said:

“Wanted. Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over 18. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.”

When the pony express ended, some people say there are a bunch of riders that have chosen to remain at the station even though it was closed in the 1860s. Join us today to learn more about the ghosts of the pony express!

The Wendigo is known by several names — Windigo, Witigo, Witiko, and Wee-Tee-Go — but each roughly translates to “the evil spirit that devours mankind.”

“The Wendigo was gaunt to the point of emaciation, its desiccated skin pulled tightly over its bones. With its bones pushing out against its skin, its complexion the ash-gray of death, and its eyes pushed back deep into their sockets, the Wendigo looked like a gaunt skeleton recently disinterred from the grave. What lips it had were tattered and bloody ... Unclean and suffering from suppuration of the flesh, the Wendigo gave off a strange and eerie odor of decay and decomposition, of death and corruption” - Basil H. Johnston

Around 200 years ago, the Judgement of Death Act 1823 saw the number of crimes punishable by death in Britain drop dramatically. Good news in theory, but since medical and anatomical schools were only legally allowed to dissect the bodies, or cadavers, of those who had been condemned to death, this led to an extreme shortage of dead bodies available. Financial compensation offered by medical schools meant that some unscrupulous types soon found a way around this shortage of bodies, leading to a rash of grave-robbing by those known as resurrectionists. This led to why Burke and Hare may have murdered the 16 people in the West Port murders in 1827…

Mortemer Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in the Forest of Lyons between the present Lyons-la-Forêt and Lisors. By the 15th century, the abbey was home to hundreds of monks and was the most powerful abbey in Normandy, but by 1453, the abbey was under the French crown, rather than the English. Over the centuries after this, the abbey fell into decline and disrepair. And it is no stranger to ghost stories. Sightings of these mysterious primate-like creatures have been reported all across America ever since the 1920s. They are typically described as being similar to baboons, but larger, faster and meaner. They have also been reported to walk on all fours as well as upright… but cryptozoologists have confirmed that they are, in fact, different from other mythical human-like creatures like Bigfoot or Chupacabra. One of the most notable instances of the Devil Monkeys was in a tiny town called Danville in New Hampshire in September of 2001. What happened that night? Join us this week to find out…

The Colorado Street Bridge, one of the most haunted bridges in Southern California, has been around since the early 1900s. The bridge has had over 150 suicides over the last 100 years, with around 50 of these suicides happened during the Great Depression, and the rest happening in the years after, with 28 occurring between 2006 and 2016. Legend has it that the ghost of a contractor who died during construction calls out to lost or distressed souls and lures them off the bridge to their deaths. This story starts with James White, who bought a property called the Overtoun Farm in 1859. He built the Overtoun House three years later in 1862. When White died in 1884, his son, John Campbell White, inherited the house and its estate and started planning to extend the driveway of the house across a deep ravine in order to provide easier access. The bridge was completed in June of 1895. During the 1950s, locals started referring to the bridge as the "Bridge of Death" or the "Dog Suicide Bridge", as it was reported that dogs were leaping from the bridge into the ravine below. The mystery of why dogs become possessed to jump has never been solved, but many theories persist, ranging from the scientific to the supernatural…

Many people say that Pocomoonshine lake is a beautiful lake in Princeton, a northeastern town in Maine. But it became really notorious in the 1800s when witnesses claimed that a large creature lived in the lake. A giant snake, 30-60 feet long and 4 feet wide. And though a snake that large seems quite unbelievable, the story actually stems from Native American Folklore, specifically in a battle between giant snakes. So, could there really be a giant snake in Maine? Or maybe there's another explanation? But either way, join us for this short and sweet paranormal story!

From the German words “polter” ("to make sound" and "to rumble") and Geist ("ghost" and "spirit"), a poltergeist is fundamentally a “noisy” or “rumble” ghost. And that is exactly what appeared to happen on the night of February 10, 1935 in the basement of building number 43 on Francisco Giner de Gràcia street. This is when the Montroig and Mendoza family heard a faint banging sound throughout the walls, which was slowly getting louder and louder. What followed was a series of events which were witnessed by the family, neighbors, and even the media. But what really happened that night? We may never really know…

Marvin Alvin Clark was born in (maybe) 1852. After a mysterious day of travel, he went missing on October 30th, 1926. Since then, it was believed that his body was found by loggers in 1986, but when it was determined that the remains were not his, two mysteries remain: who was found in 1986, and what happened to Marvin Alvin Clark?

Marvin Clark has been missing for just about 95 years now, so he would be over 160 years old today. Which means that we aren’t expecting to find him alive, but it would be nice to have some closure for the family. New England is famous for horror stories and ghosts and hauntings - the most famous being the Salem Witch Trials of the late 1600s. Just about 200 years since that Satanic panic that caused the witch trials, there was another type of paranormal panic, a supernatural delusion if you will, fueled by an outbreak of tuberculosis, known at the time as consumption. When one member of a family would contract TB, it was likely that others would as well in due time. So people started thinking that the deceased were returning to earth and draining the life from their loved ones. And this caused what they called the “Vampiric Panic.” And thus began years of vampires and burning hearts…

June and Jennifer Gibbons were born on April 11th 1963, and were identical twins who lived in Wales and were known as the Silent Twins because they only ever communicated with each other. They started speaking in a more quirky version of the language and it was soon that literally nobody else could understand. One of the articles I read said “their language, or idioglossia, qualified as an example of cryptophasia, exemplified by the twins' simultaneous actions, which often mirrored each other. The twins became increasingly reserved and eventually spoke to no one except each other and their younger sister Rose.” But what really happened to the twins? This story is known as a few different things depending on what article you read, but what I’m calling it is the legend of Annie’s Doll. And the reason I was so excited to share was because it is based right here in Edinburgh, and those are my favorite stories to tell. So join us this week as we take a look at Mary King’s Close and one of the most famous hauntings in the area…

Stay safe out there.

"Has anyone ever played the Infinity Game? The one with the mirrors? Most people don’t know it’s a game, they just think it’s a cool visual effect. Maybe it’s different for me, being raised by witches. Not Halloween witches, but the ones who practice Wicca. You can Google it if you really want to learn about them, but I’m here to talk about the game." - Page Turner

"There are few careers with the same considerations as police work. Not only are we in a position to make life-changing choices, but we also have to live with the consequences of those choices forever. Many people struggle to handle that. Time and time again, we see what happens when people who are clearly unprepared are forced to navigate intense situations. It ends in tragedy."

The Bell Witch Cave in Adams, Tennessee is the site of many, many hauntings. It is thought that Ol Kate Batts, the Bell Witch, fled to the sanctuary of the cave in the years she said she would leave the Bell family alone… and in that time she has been seen and heard and felt so many times over the years that it is almost impossible to believe that she isn’t really haunting that cave. The Bell Witch is one of the most well known urban legends from the South, regarding a mostly invisible entity that was able to speak, affect the physical environment, and shapeshift and/or may have been clairvoyant and able to be in two places at once. And just to sum up how scary this spirit is, Andrew Jackson once spent the night at the Bell’s farm and was then quoted as saying "I had rather face the entire British Army than to spend another night with the Bell Witch." I guess only visit the Bell Witch if you dare…

Andrew Gosden, known by friends and family as “Roo,” lived in South Yorkshire. By all accounts, he was a normal kid - he had a few close friends, was very academically driven but involved in the Church and in other activities like Cub Scouts. He was the kind of kid who was expected to go to Cambridge one day. That all changed in 2007, when he didn’t go to school and instead boarded a train to London. Andrew Gosden was never seen again. But over the years, people have thought they made contact… this story is still unfolding and we will update you when we know more, but for now we hope you enjoy this episode and if you have any information please do share it with the relevant authorities.

“She comes by night, in fearsome flight,

In garments black as pitch,

the queen of doom upon her broom,

the wild and wicked witch,

a crackling crone with brittle bones

and dessicated limbs,

two evil eyes with warts and sties

and bags about the rims,

a dangling nose, ten twisted toes

and fold of shriveled skin,

cracked and chipped and crackled lips

that frame a toothless grin.

She hurtles by, she sweeps the sky

and hurls a piercing screech.

As she swoops past, a spell is cast

on all her curses reach.

Take care to hide when the wild witch rides

to shriek her evil spell.

What she may do with a word or two

is much too grim to tell.”

In 1934, Alcatraz was remade/rebranded as the world’s most secure prison… and was made even more cold and secure than its previous island-surrounded-by-cold-and-foreboding-waters made it out to be. The redesign included tougher iron bars, a series of strategically positioned guard towers, and strict rules, including a dozen checks a day of the prisoners. Despite this, from 1934 to when the prison closed in 1963, 36 men tried 14 separate escapes. Nearly all were caught or didn’t survive the attempt. But three men may have made it out…

“London Times, July 20, 1836:

That, early in July, 1836, some boys were searching for rabbits’ burrows in the rocky formation, near Edinburgh, known as Arthur’s Seat. In the side of a cliff, they came upon some thin sheets of slate, which they pulled out.

Little cave.

Seventeen tiny coffins.

Three or four inches long.

In the coffins were miniature wooden figures. They were dressed differently in both style and material. There were two tiers of eight coffins each, and a third one begun, with one coffin.

The extraordinary datum, which has especially made mystery here:

That the coffins had been deposited singly, in the little cave, and at intervals of many years. In the first tier, the coffins were quite decayed, and the wrappings had moldered away. In the second tier, the effects of age had not advanced so far. And the top coffin was quite recent looking.”

The true crime cases we’ve covered on this podcast have all been horrifying; to even think people would be capable of such monstrosities is a terrible thought. This case is one of the worst I have encountered. We only hope that the victims and their families were able to find some peace.

On April 22, 1974, six men in total, drove in two vans to the Hi-Fi Shop at 2323 Washington Boulevard, Ogden. They came with the intention of robbing the store and killing everyone who got in their way. There were two employees working that night, one teenage boy and his mother, and the father of one of the employees. Only two of them left alive, and suffered horrible traumatic injuries as a result.

The A75 is a road that stretches a total of 95.4 miles through Dumfries and Galloway. It is just on the Scottish side of the border, the route is notorious for being extremely badly lit. Claudia Lawrence was born in Malton, North Yorkshire in 1974. While her parents were both in the law field, after her early education she went to a local catering college where she qualified as a chef. After working at hotels and restaurants in York, she eventually settled at Goodricke College in the University of York in 2006. While she never had any serious relationships, she did have a very vibrant social life and was quite close with her parents too. Everything was looking great for her, up until Thursday March 19th when she didn’t show up to her 6am shift.. or drinks with her friend after… or anything after that either. To this date, we don’t know what happened to Claudia Lawrence, but we can only hope that her family will one day find closure about what happened to her.

There is a road, an “old path” if you will, in southeast Nebraska. And according to the local lore, in the 1900s there were seven women who were murdered on this road. So this legend has been kind of circulating for more than a century so there are a ton of variations and add ons and honestly even more sightings and spooky occurrences. Lots of sevens in today’s story: from seven sisters to seven hills.

Rebecca Coriam, a Disney Crew member on the Disney Wonder, sent her last message to her parents on March 21st 2011 saying she would call the next day. However, when she didn't call or show up for work the next morning, the crew understandably got worried. From there began a series of investigations that frankly left more to be desired. Nobody knows what exactly happened from when she was last seen on CCTV at 5:45am. Was it a 100 foot rogue wave that mysteriously appeared in calm waters like Disney suggests? Did she decide to take her own life even though she had made future plans? Honestly, I don't think we'll ever know. But all we can say for sure is we hope Rebecca Coriam's family and friends may one day find peace.

"Harry Maine — you have heard the tale;

He lived there in Ipswich Town;

He blasphemed God, so they put him down,

With an iron shovel, at Ipswich Bar;

They chained him there for a thousand years,

As the sea rolls up to shovel it back ;

So when the sea cries, the goodwives say

“Harry Maine growls at his work today.”"

An article in the Smithsonian Magazine by Colin Dickey (December 15th 2017), called A Plea to Resurrect the Christmas Tradition of Telling Ghost Stories reminded us that especially in this day and age, we really only let the spooky things happen at Halloween. But if you know anything about whack Christmas traditions, you’ll know the very famous story by Charles Dickens titled A Christmas Carol. The story is about a man tormented by a series of ghosts the night before Christmas, and it belongs to the now mostly forgotten tradition of telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve. And you can still see this now in songs like ““It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” with the lyric “there’ll be scary ghost stories.” For much of the 19th century, the holiday was very much associated with ghosts and the specters. But telling these stories was something the Puritans didn’t really love so the tradition died down in America. In honor of the early tradition, we will be reading you a story called Dark Christmas by Jeanette Winterson… hope you enjoy :)

He had a young son that would go down to the Alaska Railroad terminal during the day to pick up luggage for the guests arriving at the hotel. One of the ghosts is a little boy. The Château de Fougeret is a château in Vienne, France; it was built some time between the 15th and 16th centuries. So basically, in ancient times, there were Druidic sources in Fougeret that were places of worship. It was the type of place where the villagers would go  to cure skin diseases or to have children, and I guess they claimed that there was a magic link that existed from the beginning on the site, like even before there was a castle. François-Joseph Geffroy and  Véronique Geffroy bought the chateau in 2009. Upon buying it, they said “when we arrived in Fougeret in March 2009, we totally ignored his history. We fell in love with this unusual castle but we did not know why or how it was going to change our lives. Fougeret came into resonance with our own existence because its story and ours was strangely similar.”

John Joseph Joubert IV (not to be confused with John Joubert, the famous South African composer) was an American serial killer who murdered three boys in Maine and Nebraska. His parents divorced when he was 6 years old, and he went to live with his mother in Lawrence, MA. He was not allowed to visit his father at all and started to resent his mother, who he described as “controlling.” In 1971, Joubert's mother moved them out of their former house into a rundown apartment, and at this point in time, he was considered an outcast at school; so, in order to cope with these feelings of isolation, he decided to join the Cub Scouts. It was around this time that his sadistic and homicidal fantasies progressed to the point where he contemplated murdering strangers on the streets, tying and gagging those who resisted him. And from there, it only got worse...

The son of a mixed-race mother and a Saudi Arabian father, Schiendelman was raised primarily by his grandmother in Tumwater, Washington, where he was a star athlete at Tumwater High School. Valdo Taneski was born in 1952 in Yugoslavia. A middle child (the second of three children), his parents were both conservative disciplinarians and he had a particularly tense relationship with his mother. He ended up studying journalism in Croatia, and had a 20 year long career as a very well respected and well liked journalist. But all that changed in 2005, when the body of Mitra Simjanoska was found. Since then, two more bodies were found and one woman is still missing… and the only real reason why they suspected Taneski was because is his very detailed journal reports, even more detailed than was released to the public. Did Taneski want to be caught? Or did he simply slip up? We may never know…

The Seaside is a historic medical facility at 36 Shore Road in Waterford, Connecticut. It is nationally significant as the first institution designed for heliotropic treatment of children suffering from tuberculosis. It has also been a home for the elderly, a medical hospital and a facility to treat the mentally handicapped. Rumors state that the death toll of Seaside Sanatorium summed up to the low hundreds. This is mostly due to the high mortality rate of tuberculosis and of course the elderly. This has left an imprint on the building which is said to still exist to today. Users who worked in the building claim they would feel cold spots, hear footsteps and strange sounds even while alone

Clementine Barnabet is believed to have been born around 1894 in St. Martinville, Louisiana and moved to Lafayette in 1909. In Proceedings of the 2012 Homicide Research Working Group Annual Symposium, Professor Vance McLaughlin wrote: "Between 1911 and 1912, in towns along the Southern Pacific railroad line running through Louisiana and Texas, a minimum of twelve African-American families were murdered in their homes. All the murders occurred at night and an ax was used to fracture the skulls of the victims. Only one person, Clementine Barnabet, was ever punished for any of these homicides." So while this story seems to be wrapped up in a neat little bow, all may not be what it seems… join us this week for Voodoo, murders, and a church twisted by the media…

You may know St. Andrews as a university town, golf courses and beach and all that... but this is Scotland, so you know that the city has a darker side and what many articles call a macabre history. St Andrews actually has over 200 locations that are rumored to be possessed and has over 400 ghosts that are said to inhabit these areas. In part 1, we're talking about the ghosts in St. Andrews Castle and the Cathedral grounds where we talk about the White Lady and the Nun of Nuns walk as well as a few short stories about the White Angel Statue and St Rule's Tower - but make sure to tune in next week too where we talk about a few other ghosts in St Andrews, including maybe a new one...

So we’ve talked about this type of killer before, kind of like an “angel of mercy” or “angel of death” - basically a person employed as a caregiver, usually like a hospital or nursing home or something, who intentionally harms or kills people who depend on them for care

Donald Harvey was born in Butler County in Ohio in 1952 but ended up moving to Kentucky. He started working as an orderly at the Marymount Hospital in London, Kentucky, and he worked there from May 1970 to March 1971

He later confessed that during the ten-month period he worked at the hospital, he killed at least a dozen patients.

Ybor City is chock full of historical buildings and culture… and even some ghosts...

The Cuban Club is probably one of the most haunted places in the city, and it has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. Joe Howden from Ybor City Ghost tours basically explained that spirits may become attached to a place rather than an event, and so they tend to stick around.

"What you really are, is energy sewn together by consciousness, you come from somewhere. We’ll say another dimension for ease. You come here, you pick up a body like a Hertz rent-a-car, you use it for a period of time and then you return, discarding the automobile that you were in. There are some who can't transition and if you think about it in your life, you’ve probably known someone who’s in a toxic relationship and from the outside you say, 'well, why doesn’t he leave her?' or 'why doesn’t she leave him?' Attachment. The Cuban Club is such a great place because I think there’s a lot of attachment here that might be out of love."

Milena Quaglini was born on March 25th, 1957 in Mezzanino, Italy, and the reason we are talking about her today is that she murdered 3 men in the late 1990s. She had a tumultuous family life and left shortly after she graduated school. But she went on to meet the love of her life shortly after. For a while her life was as good as it can get, but when her husband died suddenly, things started spiraling out of control. His death hit her hard, and the series of men she met afterwards weren’t the best. So finally, she decided enough was enough and she killed 3 of the men who had hurt or tried to hurt her in the past. When she was arrested, her depression retired and unfortunately she passed away on October 16, 2001.

The Kehoe House is at 123 Habersham Street on Columbia Square in Savannah, Georgia. It was completed in May of 1892, built for William Kehoe and his family. Kehoe was an Irish man who immigrated to the US in 1842 when he was only 10 years old. And he made a fortune in iron and became one of Savannah's most prominent businessmen. Kehoe spent $950 ($25,000 today) on the construction of this house, including making the home a “true showcase of his iron trade.” And it comes as no surprise when we say that the house is haunted. By the ghosts of the Kehoe children, their mother, and even William Kehoe himself…

In the summer of 1976 two serial killers stalked the roads of Ireland in a Ford Cortina looking for young women to abduct, rape and murder in order to “fulfil” their “shared fantasy” of raping and killing one woman every week while in Ireland. When they arrived in Ireland, they didn’t immediately start with the killing. They actually went on a crime spree in Wicklow where they committed a series of burglaries before being sent to Mountjoy Prison. When they were released from prison, they decided that they would do what they wanted, namely the aforementioned fantasy. Later, after they were arrested for the final time, they ended up telling the gardaí that they had decided to “embark on an unprecedented and macabre programme of abduction, rape and murder.”

"There's a famous quote by Robert Evans, "There are three sides to a story. Yours, mine, and the truth." In my line of work, you come to realize that the truth is rarely an objective perspective. For example, a bloody fight is the result of an argument. One side claims self-defense. The other claims a brutal attack. A camera shows a man striking another in the heat of the moment. Case closed, right? The truth is stored in that digital medium. No. When you look further, what do you find? A lifelong friendship. Betrayal. Months of tension. Threats. A boilover. Maybe the attacker truly believed his life was in danger and mistook the slightest movement as the beginning of a punch. Perhaps he just let his anger at the situation get the best of him. Maybe a mix of both. What's the objective truth here? And for whom is that truth valid?

When you're a cop, understanding these nuances in "truth" is critical. And, understanding the power those nuances can have is even more important. Not only when we have to discern whether or not someone's recollection of events is accurate, but when we lie to achieve a specific response. It's all something you become very familiar with. For me and my investigations, in particular, this was especially true."

So this case is another one of those cases that makes me irrationally angry, and I’m just going to tell you why - because along with the fact that this man was a terrible terrible person, he still hasn’t been caught yet. This week we’re talking about the Honolulu Strangler, also known as the Honolulu Rapist. He was Hawaii’s first known serial killer, and he killed 5 women between 1985 and 1986. We hope the families of these victims have been able to find some peace even though nobody has ever been convicted of these horrendous crimes.

Hellfire Club was a name for several exclusive clubs for high-society rakes established in Britain and Ireland in the 18th century. And while the club may seem like the dark academia fantasy society of your dreams, the club was actually pretty scary - dabbling in the dark arts (of course), devil worship, animal sacrifice, and drinking questionable alcoholic drinks. At the top of Montpelier Hill sits a hunting lodge constructed in the early 1700s that was one of the many locations that the Hellfire club in Ireland used - but this one is particularly haunted. From tales of the Devil stopping by to demonic cat possession to poltergeist activity, the house has had its share of paranormal events. Christine Laverne Slaughter (that’s her actual birth name, we were shocked too) was an American serial killer who was active in a couple different towns in Florida. She had a really rough childhood, and as a young child she began to take that anger out on cats, killing several of them by throwing them from great heights. When she was a teenager, she graduated to killing the children she babysat. This story is especially heartbreaking due to this fact - many of her victims were young children. "They say that everyone has a case that haunts them. Personally, if it's just one case, then clearly, whoever "they" are isn't doing very good police work. Being a detective is gritty and bleak. You aren't dealing with happy endings, you're dealing with the cold hard truth. Sure, every now and again, you'll get an easy case—the missing kid who just so happens to be at a friend's house. Or the argument turned bad where the bullet just so happens to miss every vital organ. Open and shut, everyone goes home with a smile on their face or at least the life they were given."

France has had some prolific serial killers but if the 150 supposed kills by Yvan Keller, the Pillow Killer, are all true then he might be the most prolific serial killer of the 20th century. Active between 1989 and 2003, Yvan was a landscape gardener who gained access to the houses of elderly women who lived alone in France, Switzerland, and Germany. He would then smother them with a pillow before robbing them. While he confessed to many many murders, he was only indicted for five deaths. So did he actually kill that many women? Or is this a case of megalomania?

You might know Salem for the witch trials in 1692, but Salem has a major haunted history as well - that all kind of centers around the House of the Seven Gables. Built in 1668 for a man called John Turner, the house has seen centuries of history: some good, some bad, and some in between. The name we use today for the house was popularized due to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel (The House of the Seven Gables). But that’s not all that the Hawthorne family was involved in; their ties to the Salem Witch Trials run deep. So, as you can imagine, with its past and its connection to the witch trials, the house is pretty prominent in ghost stories and paranormal activity. If you haven’t heard of the Affair of Poisons, look no further than this episode. This was this major murder scandal in France between 1677 and 1682, when King Louis XIV was in power. During this time there were many members of the aristocracy who were accused and charged with poisoning and witchcraft. The Affair of Poisons ended with 442 implicated suspects, 367 issued orders of arrests were issued, where 218 of which were carried out. Of those 218 condemned, 36 were executed; 5 were sentenced to the galleys, and 23 to exile. What do all of these people have in common? Well, if not for Marie-Madeleine d’Aubray, the Marquise de Brinvillers, they wouldn’t be dead, for her death was the catalyst of the Affair of Poisons. But what exactly did she do and how did she do it? This episode has most of the answers and maybe a few questions…

So this week Maddie and I are going back to our roots I guess - because we’re talking about a notoriously haunted house in our home state of Massachusetts. If you know the popular jump rope song:

“Lizzie Borden took an axe

She gave her mother forty whacks.

When she saw what she had done

She gave her father forty-one.

Lizzie Borden got away

For her crime she did not pay.”

You probably can guess that we’re talking about the Lizzie Borden House. There are a lot of details in the actual case of the murder and the trial and everything so if you want to hear more about that let us know and maybe we can do an episode just on the case sometime in the future. But for now, let’s talk about the ghosts in this apparently very haunted bed and breakfast...

In 1913, the Franciscan order built the Waldniel Hoster School - this was a Christian religious order within the catholic church that was founded in 1209 by Saint Francis of Assisi. It was this huge space that consisted of a church, a school and several administrative buildings. However, with Hitler’s rise to power in the 1930s and the Euthanasia decree coming into effect in 1939, the school became more or less a place of death and pain. It is estimated that 97 children lost their lives in the building, and their cries can still be heard to this day. The 97 children who had death certificates at the facility had causes of death such as emaciation, pneumonia, and cardiovascular weakness, but it is more than likely that the actual cause of death was due to the sleeping medication that was continuously administered. We hope that these souls eventually find peace, and hope you enjoy this eerie story…

In September of 2020, 38 year old Holly Courtier and her daughter Kailey Chambers went to Zion National Park to go hiking. She was apparently looking to go on a brief spiritual pilgrimage, and was looking to disconnect from everything for a while. On October 6th, she left her phone, didn’t tell anyone where exactly she was going to hike, parked her car in Springdale, and then took a 1:30 pm private shuttle to the Grotto area. This was the last time she was seen for almost 2 weeks. 12 days later, she was rescued from a site near the Virgin River - but this is where the story gets weird and we’re left asking questions like “how did she even survive this?”

The Spandau Citadel is a fortress in Berlin, and it is one of the best preserved Renaissance military structures in Europe. It was built in 1559 on this medieval fort located on an island, and it was designed to protect the town of Spandau - the town is now a part of Berlin. And also the inner courtyard is used as a concert venue in summer and has been once since 2005!

But this is a story of love and loss; of children who do the wrong thing; and of women who come back with a vengeance. While the ghost of the Spandau Citadel hasn’t been reported to be violent, she has appeared to the descendants of the Hohenzollern family. And lastly, we should mention here that there is still a bit of mystery surrounding her death - and if the skeleton they found in the citadel during renovations actually belongs to her…

Stay safe out there.

Scott Lee Kimball was born on September 21st, 1966 in Boulder County, Colorado, and he was convicted of check fraud after he stole $50,000 from this optometrist. In light of this criminal act, he was sentenced to prison for fraud. When he was in prison, he apparently bragged to his fellow inmates that he was a hit man, and adopted this a tough-guy persona, probably to increase his relevance in the inmate hierarchy. For some reason, he also liked to call himself "Hannibal.” But he was released in 2003. And he murdered four people between January of 2003 and August of 2004. This story is a lot, but we hope you enjoy the ride…

So today I thought we could talk about two different cases cause I found one I wanted to talk about but then it ended up being a story from Egypt and I wanted to keep with the Europe and America theme so I thought we could talk about Kaisa Vornanen-Karaduman and then do a little bonus story. Unfortunately neither of these stories are fun but we don’t think any murders are fun…

The first case is better known as the Oulu child murders, and it is a Finnish murder case referring to June 3rd, 2014, when the bodies of five infants were found in the basement of an apartment in Oulu after the police received a complaint from neighbors about really bad-smelling packages and parcels in the basement of an apartment complex.

The second case we’re covering is the case of Raya and Sakina. And they're household names (like mothers would tell their daughters to behave to Raya and Sakina would come for them ). These two women were known as Egypt’s most infamous serial killers. They were sisters, and they teamed up with their husbands and two other men to kill women in a neighborhood called Labban in Alexandria, Egypt. They killed 17 women between December 20th, 1919 and November 12th 1920.

The Chase house is located at 698 Middle Rd in Portsmouth New Hampshire. It is located on the corner of Court and Washington street if you ever wanted to go visit, and it is one of the grandest houses in Georgian architecture at Strawberry Banke in New Hampshire. When I first heard about this haunted orphanage, I thought it was because the kids were murdered or died of illness or something because I guess my mind just goes to the fact that all the mental institutions we talk about were set up to help but the doctors killed the people; but the story here is different but equally as tragic: It has been said that one of the young girls who lived at the home hanged herself in her bedroom. To hear all about this small bite of horror, make sure to give this week’s short story a listen :)

In today’s very short episode, Saaniya covers the case of Dagmar Overby - a Danish serial killer who murdered 9, and possibly even more children, between 1913 and 1920. This case is particularly upsetting because I think the women involved really thought they were doing what was best for their children in giving them up so they could find better homes. This case actually inspired the government to change the legislation on childcare - “unwanted children” were considered the government's responsibility, and the Danish Government passed a law in 1923 that required public houses be built to foster children.

We also know that this episode wasn’t as fun without Maddie, but if you missed her as much as I did be sure to come back next week for a very short but pretty fun paranormal story!

In the 50s, the Ministry of Health in Terrassa, Spain opened up a hospital in the La Pineda forest that was active between 1952 and 1997. The hospital was called Hopital Thorax, and when it was active it was primarily a recovery center because the area they built it in was known for having no fog, being protected from northwest wind, and even had a mild climate in summer which would be perfect for tuberculosis recovery. And it had the lowest TB rate so would be perfect. If you don’t know much about TB, it’s a respiratory illness with a really high mortality rate and the treatment that cured the disease took 18 months. During these months, the patients would be completely isolated from their friends and family. And the detrimental toll this isolation took on their mental health led many of them to suicide. Many people report hearing voices and seeing apparitions roaming the hallways and the garden where many lost their lives…

In 1946, an unidentified serial killer committed a series of violent crimes around Texarkana. And these murders, understandably, caused a whole lot of panic in Texarkana during the time he was active. People would arm themselves and lock themselves inside and the police patrolled the neighborhoods every night. On Friday February 22nd, 1946, the killer assaulted 25 year old Jimmy Hollis and 19 year old Mary Jeanne Larey. In the coming months, he murdered 29 year old Richard Griffin, 17 year old Polly Ann Moore, 15 year old Betty Jo Booker, 17 year old Paul Martin, and 37 year old Virgil Starks. And he shot at Virgil’s 36 year old wife, Katie. Even though there were many suspects in this case, nobody was officially charged for their murders. We go over these suspectes, the circumstantial evidence, and why they weren’t charged in the episode, but if you would like to read more about this case, all the links are in our bio!

So if you couldn’t tell from the name, the house with seven chimneys, casa de las siete chimeneas, is a house that has seven chimneys. It is said that the seven chimneys represent the seven sins. So the house is sometimes called the House of the Seven Sins. So I don’t think this is fact, but according to the legends, the house was built by order of King Philip II, possibly because he wanted a secret spot for having love affairs that he didn’t want people knowing about. But because this is a paranormal story, it is safe to assume some spooky things happened in the house…

Mark Goudeau was born in 1964 and was the second youngest child of 13. On November 7th, 1982, he and his brother raped a young woman, and while they were arrested, he was not charged. After committing a couple other petty crimes, in August of 1989, he was charged with abducting a woman, and brutally torturing, bludgeoning, and raping her. He was sentenced to fifteen years for this and 21 years for a robbery he committed in 1990, but he was a model inmate and released on parole in 2004. Then in 2005, a series of brutal rapes and killings in the Phoenix metro area began. In total, it is believed that he committed 9 counts of first degree murder, 15 sexual assaults, 11 kidnappings, and an unknown number of armed robberies.

The Cortijo Jurada or Casa Encantada is an abandoned mansion in Spain that was built in the late 19th/early 20th century by the Heredia family, one of the wealthiest and most influential families, who came to Malagda from La Rioja. As soon as it was built there were rumors that began to circulate about the sadistic things that happened inside the house. There were conspiracy theories and stories of disappearances, rape and murder that spread throughout the region and gave the strange home this eerie and almost evil reputation. Rumor has it that the bodies of their young victims were buried within the property, and their spirits still move around at night. People have reported hearing their sobs and moans echoing throughout the remains of the mansion. So join us for a little bit of history of one of Spain's most haunted houses!

Marc Dutroux was born in Belgium on November 6th, 1956, and he’s quite possibly the worst man we’ve talked about on this podcast. He kidnapped, raped, tortured, and killed so so so many girls over the years, and most people believed that he was part of a pedophile network that operated with members of the government high ranking officials. Among the girls he abducted, 12 year old Sabine Dardenne was taken while cycling to school. She survived everything he did to her, and wrote a book about what it was like in captivity. It was titled: J'avais 12 ans, j'ai pris mon vélo et je suis partie à l'école. In the UK it was called I choose to live. This case was another one that was really hard to get through, so if you need to take breaks, please do. Take care of your own mental health first, and we’ll see you soon!

The Athens Lunatic Asylum was operational from 1874 to 1993, and was a mental hospital that provided services to everyone from Civil War veterans and children to those declared “mentally unwell.” Today it is a part of Ohio University, but when it was the Athens Lunatic Asylum, it was best known for performing lobotomies… and I think you may know where this is headed. The Asylum has made headlines several times over the years: once in 1977 when it housed multiple personality rapist Billy Milligan, and again just one year later when a patient named Margaret Schilling disappeared on December 1, 1978. This disappearance was really interesting because some of the details of the case didn’t really make any sense, but the story has also led to one of the hospital’s most famous ghost stories. Maddie and I always find stories about asylums from the past really chilling and this one doesn’t disappoint; we hope you stick around and join us for this spooky story!

Jack Unterweger was born in 1950 in Graz, which is the capital city of Styria, a state in southeast Austria (and fun fact it is the second largest city in Austria after Vienna). His early life was somewhat turbulent, and it is thought that a combination of events from his early childhood caused a sever hatred of sex workers. As you can imagine from a true crime podcast, he was a murderer. And this is where the story gets crazy... In fact, I think that this is the absolute craziest story we have talked about on this podcast to date. Just a warning, this story is difficult to listen to and mentions sexual assault and murder. And it's another one of those cases that's absolutely infuriating because so many deaths could have been avoided. We hope you join us for this absolutely crazy story of an episode!

Robert Hansen was born in 1939 to a Danish immigrant who came to Iowa as a baker. When he was younger he was described as a skinny, painfully shy boy, who had a stutter and severe acne that actually ended up permanently scarring his face. And he also had a really difficult relationship with his father, who was described as domineering. Because of this he didn’t get a ton of attention from the girls at school or anything, And he began to resent them, even having fantasies of getting revenge on them. This all manifested in the 1970s after he moved to Anchorage, Alaska. Hansen was seriously messed up - like I feel like when you talk about serial killers for long enough you kind of distance yourself from the stories in a way but this was a lot for me I had to take breaks when researching, so definitely take care of your own mental health when listening to this case and take breaks or stop when necessary.

The Père Lachaise Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Paris. Founded in 1802, it is the most visited necropolis in the world (literally over 3.5 million people visit annually). There are over 300,000 people buried here, and amongst them, there are many prominent historical figures such as Edith Pilaf, Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, Gertrude Stein, Pissaro and Chopin. Due to health concerns regarding corpses contaminating the central water supply, many bodies were relocated to the cemetery from where they were already buried, which is probably the cause of many spooky happenings at the Père Lachaise...

This week, we're talking about the story of a man who was apparently, according to the New York Times, a "dashing British aristocrat and army officer, known for his prowess at backgammon and bridge and his fondness for vodka martinis, powerboats, and Aston Martin cars." Richard John Bingham was born on December 18th 1934 in London, and has earned an episode on this podcast because he just disappeared after a really weird set of circumstances that ended in the murder of Sandra Rivett and the hospitalization of Veronica Lucan. This was definitely a chaotic story to end a chaotic year, and we hope you enjoy listening!

Lake Lanier is the largest lake in Georgia with over 600 miles of shore that borders 5 counties. It was built in 1957 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer, and since the lake’s opening, an estimated 675 people have died in the lake and not all of the bodies have been found. It took around 5 years to fill the lake, and during that time the U.S. government bought more than 50,000 acres of farmland, displacing more than 250 families, 15 businesses, and relocated 20 cemeteries along with their corpses in the process. The lake is literally full of dead bodies. So to the 7 million people who visit it every year... why? Join us for a little look into the Lake Lanier ghosts, as well as a couple of other ghost stories from Georgia in this episode of grim.!

Amy Duggan Archer-Gilligan was born on October 31st, 1873 (spooky Halloween birthday vibes), and she ran a nursing home in Connecticut... before she was arrested for murder. The thing was that her residents kept on mysteriously dying after they had paid her for their stay. One of her victims was her second husband, Michael Gilligan; the others were residents of her nursing home. And here's the thing: she may have murdered up to 60 people. She was an Angel of Death-type killer, who didn't have a preference for victims of a specific gender or with certain physical characteristics. I think she was just in it for the money. She's a local legend in Connecticut to this day, so stick around to find out just how crazy her story is.

The Flannan Isles Lighthouse is a lighthouse near the highest point on Eilean Mòr, off the west coast of mainland Scotland... and while it is a beautiful little island, it is best known for the mysterious disappearance of its keepers in 1900. The first record that something was wrong on Flannan Isles was when the steamer Archtor was on a trip from Philadelphia to Leith on December 15th, 1900 . The ship noted in the log that the light was "not operational in poor weather conditions." On December 26th, a relief team was sent to the lighthouse, and that's when they noticed some really weird things. Did the keepers just get caught in a freak storm or was there something more at play...

Joshua Maddux was born on March 9th, 1990, and he went missing in 2008 and seven years later, was found in the chimney of a cabin just two blocks from his home. The question is, how did he get there? When Joshua's body was found 7 years later, there were some very odd things about it... namely that Joshua was found in the fetal position but with his legs over his head. Eventually, on the 28th September 2015, after failing to find any rational cause, Al Born made a ruling of “Accidental Death”. And he suggested that Josh had climbed down the chimney and become lodged in the brickwork. He concluded the most likely cause of death was Hypothermia, as the temperature around the time of his disappearance had dropped to -6 Celsius at it’s coldest. So this story definitely leaves you thinking... who did it? or was it really just an accident. I don't think we'll ever know...

There actually aren’t that many stories about the Brown Lady. The most commonly known story is about the Brown Lady of Raynham Hall, who is one of the most famous ghosts in Great Britain. According to legend, she is the ghost of Lady Dorothy Walpole who lived from 1686 to 1726, and the controversy around her arises when you look at her death: was it murder or was it just due to the medicine available at the time? We also looked at the mystery of the Brown Lady of Chowan University, and how Halloween marks a very important night for this particular ghost... so sit back and get ready for a couple of spooky ghost stories!

Welcome back to the first episode in our second year of podcasting - we made it to week 53! This week we're talking about a very interesting type of ghost... the Gray Lady is a ghost of a woman who died violently for the sake of love or through the actions of their family. And they usually haunt houses and castles in the hopes that they will reunite with their loved ones. Out of all of the types of ladies, these ghosts are considered tragic figures (linked to tragedy) and often portray loneliness or loss. They are called gray ladies because they often wear gray clothing, but also because they have what I can only describe as a gray aura. This means that a Gray Lady can be wearing clothes of a different color, but can still be considered a Gray Lady simply because she has the gray vibes that correspond to loss, loneliness, and the desire to be reunited with a loved one. So bundle up and grab some spooky snacks as you join us through this collection of ghost stories!

First of all, we just wanted to say happy 1 year anniversary! We can't believe it has already been a whole year of telling stories on this podcast and we just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has listened and followed along with us! 🥳🥳

Today's episode is another in our series on ghosts... this week we're talking about the Red Lady. A Lady in Red or Red Lady is a type of female ghost that is very similar to the White Lady. According to legend though, she is more specifically defined as having a jilted lover, being a prostitute killed in a fit of passion, or woman of vanity. She is usually a victim of objectification. And in all cases, she is wearing a scarlet or blood red dress. There have been reports of the Red Lady across numerous college campuses in the US, Canada, UK, and Asia, and we hope you like this collection of short stories!

This story originates in appalachian folklore, but she does appear in various regions in Southern and Western America. And there have also been reported sightings of her in Europe and the Philippians. What we see here is that the only real difference between the two types of ladies, the black lady and the white lady, is the way they dress. Also fun fact, they are sometimes they are associated with devils because they wear black. Some people think that there is also a difference in that the Black Lady is more dangerous than a white lady in that she will actually harm or scare the human she is haunting. According to legend, a Woman in Black typically appeared to men who had misbehaved, cheated on their wives, or committed some moral offense or transgression. It was even said that her alleged appearances in Roanoke kept married men home with their wives and families rather than going out each night. We hope you like this episode of our Halloween Series and we hope to see you next week! Happy spooky season 🎃

On September 20th, 2014, Tammy Kingery went missing. She had called her husband to come pick her up from work, as she was not feeling well. Her husband dropped her off at home and then went out to run some errands. But when he returned, he found the dog outside, the door locked, and Tammy's keys, phone, and wallet inside. All that was left of Tammy was a note saying she was going for a walk and would be back soon. But it has been almost exactly six years since that day, and Tammy hasn't been found. If you have any information that could help with the case please contact the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office at 803-278-1625, or South Carolina State Law enforcement at 803-737-9000

The case is still open as a missing persons case and the family is still struggling with her disappearance. Her sister said “You can’t fully grieve, because you don't know what has happened. What if she's out there somewhere and someone is holding her from everyone and we gave up?”

If y’all don’t know, Portland is sometimes referred to as the Forbidden City of the West → and if you’ve ever wondered why I think this story should help clear some things up. Underneath downtown Portland is a series of 150-year-old tunnels that connect the basements of the city’s oldest buildings to the Willamette River, as well as Portland’s Chinatown. Portland was a small town, at the time, but it had a large port that could support many ships. Many cargo ships sailed for many months across the Pacific before unloading their cargo in Portland. The tunnels were built by Chinese workers during the time when Chinatown was the center for trade business. The tunnel’s original design was for transporting goods from cargo ships to the inner city. However, as you can imagine, the tunnels started being used for more nefarious purposes such as illegal alcohol transportation during prohibition, Shanghaiing, and even used to kidnap and sell women. And as you can see where I'm going with this, it is reportedly haunted by the ghosts who were killed here. So join us as we explore the miles and miles of tunnels underneath Portland...

On February 12th, 1993, two ten year old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, lured James Bulger away from his mother in an arcade in the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, Liverpool. They then led James about 2 and a half miles across the city to Walton, where they brought him to this stretch of train tracks that was rarely used. They then used bricks and sticks that they found nearby to beat him up and basically torture him until they finally killed him. James was not even three years old when he died. This story is incredibly heartbreaking, and really makes you realize that there are some things that you never expect to happen. We hope you all can learn from what happened to James and hopefully we can stop something like this from ever happening again.

This story takes place near the end of the American Revolution. So nearing the end here in the early 1780s when the Continental Army had basically won their freedom, the British still had several ships in the Boston Harbor. And this is why Evacuation Day is “celebrated” on March 17th: when the British military fled from Boston. On board the British ships were 11,000 soldiers and 1,019 citizens who remained loyal to King George and wanted to return to England. William and Mary Burton were on one of these ships that were in the harbor. They were newlyweds who were in Boston at the time, and I think it was due to all the chaos surrounding the war that caused them to want to flee. As the ship was attempting to sail out of the Boston Harbor when a cannonball from the Long Island Battery that was aimed at the ship ended up hitting Mary in the back of her head. As you can imagine, that was definitely a traumatizing way to die. The ghost of Mary Burton, the Lady in Scarlet, is said to haunt this area, stumbling around for her husband. Be sure to give this episode a listen for more details about her life as well as some bonus spooky stories about Boston's lighthouses and Devil Island.

Shortly after the Rape that was committed on July 5th, 1979, the East Area Rapist moved to southern California and started attacking Santa Barbara County in October of 1979. These attacks lasted until 1981 with a single attack happening in 1986. It was during this period that Joseph James DeAngelo then began killing his victims. However, The East Area Rapist wasn’t linked to these crimes so at the time, the killer was called the Night Stalker. He was then renamed the Original Night Stalker after a serial killer called Richard Ramierez was called the Night Stalker. This is part 3 to our Golden State Killer Trilogy, so if you haven't heard parts 1 & 2, be sure to check those out if you want to learn about his earlier crimes. Since this case really recent, we will also keep you guys updated if any new details arise, and you can follow us @grimpodcast on instagram and @PodcastGrim on twitter where we'll be posting any updates!

Part 2: It Gets Worse. So in 1976, like mid 1976, Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. was believed to have moved to Sacramento. And he ended up progressing from burglary to rape. The crimes were mostly in Carmichael, Citrus Heights, and Rancho Cordova which is east of Sacramento, and on June 18th, 1976, the first attack as the East Area Rapist occurred at 4:00 am. This man did terrible, terrible things to women and their families over the months he lived in Sacramento, and we break them down for you here. But long story short, we're glad he's behind bars and paying for his crimes. Our episode last week covered his time as the Visalia Ransacker, so be sure to check that out if you're curious, and next week we're covering the ending to this horror trilogy with his time as the Original Night Stalker so stay tuned!

Between 1974 and 1986 in the California area, Joseph DeAngelo murdered more than 13 people, raped over 50, and robbed over 120. He also had 3 different nicknames over the course of this time but eventually all the crimes were linked and he became known as the Golden State Killer. He started out as a burglar known as the Visalia Ransacker, as he committed these crimes in Visalia, California; most of which occurred near the College of the Sequoias. The Ransacker was a serial prowler, voyeur, burglar, and murderer. The first recorded burglary was on Tuesday, March 19, 1974 when $50 of coins was stolen from a piggy-bank. However, over the course of 18 months, his crimes escalated from peeping to petty theft of personal items, and he even ended up murdering a man on September 11th, 1975. While this episode focuses on Joseph DeAngelo when he was known as the Visalia Ransacker, our next two episodes focus on the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker crimes, so be sure to give those a listen as well.

Nietzsche wrote, "The irrationality of a thing is not an argument against its existence, rather, a condition of it." This week, we talked about the Laser Man, a man who, from August 1991 to January 1992, shot eleven people in the Stockholm and Uppsala area, killing one and seriously injuring the others. And I know I probably didn’t pronounce them correctly so I’m going to list them here: David Gebremariam, Shahram Khosravi, Dimitrios Karamalegos, Heberson Vieira Da Costa, Jimmy Ranjbar, Erik Bongcam-Rudloff, Charles Dhlakama, Isa Aybar, Hasan Zatara, and lastly, Blanka Zmigrod. While he is very similar to a couple of other killers, his MO of killing immigrants is interesting because due to the poor quality of his weapons and amateur modifications, the bullet's trajectory was usually wrong, causing him to miss his victims or mostly shoot them in non-fatal areas. Take a listen to this episode to learn more…

With its antebellum splendor, this circa 1796 National Historic Register plantation home is famous for its mystic and riveting history. It was built in 1796 by General David Bradford (on a Native American burial ground... you can see where I'm going with this...) and over the course of hundreds of years, dozens of owners, and multiple renovations, the Myrtles Plantation is one of the most haunted houses in America. Guests report seeing the ghost of Chloe, William Drew Winter, a young Native American woman, and even the spirits of Sara Woodruff and two of her children to name a few of the 12 reported ghosts. Make sure to give this episode a listen to learn about the history and ghosts that haunt this famous plantation.

This week, we're talking about the murders of Holly Marie Wells and Jessica Aimee Chapman. Both girls were 10 years old when they were murdered on August 4th, 2002 in Soham, England. The bodies of both the girls were discovered in an irrigation ditch that was close to a Royal Airforce station in Lakenheath almost 2 weeks later on August 17th, 2002. Due to the state of the bodies, the exact cause of death is unknown, but is likely that they were strangled and died due to asphyxiation. This case is the definition of saying you really don't actually know anyone: your neighbor could be a killer.

This case does have a lot of moving parts to it, so if you guys want a part 2 with more detail, let us know! We didn't cover Ian Huntley’s past accusations/crimes, but if you guys are interested we can definitely tell you guys more about this case. If you're just interested to read more, all the sources used are linked below.

So join us this week as we talk about the history of this haunted theater and also some of the spooky things people have experienced here!

This is the case of Eva Blanco, a 16 year old girl who was found murdered on April 20th, 1997. She was only 16 years old. This story takes place over decades, but after many years, many continents, and many more suspects, her family finally had closure when her killer was arrested. Stay tuned to learn about what happened to Eva Blanco and how her family and the police worked tirelessly to bring her killer in. While I these cases are usually about how the police or the family didn't do a good job, I think this case is definitely different. Her family called the police just an hour after she went missing and after they already searched the town, and her father even set up campaigns to get DNA samples to match DNA from the crime scene.

This is the story of Lauren McCluskey, who was a student at the University of Utah in 2018; and this story makes us so so angry for so many reasons. The main reasons, though, are that Lauren did everything right. Lauren saw that she was in danger, and alerted the authorities who were supposed to protect her. But even though she asked for help, her pleas were basically all but ignored. This story is incredibly sad, and if you're listening to this as a woman, I know this will hit close to home. However, I also think that we can learn from the mistakes that happened here and make this world a little bit safer.

If you ever end up studying abroad in the UK, you should definitely visit The Ancient Ram Inn, a former pub in Wotton-under-Edge, England. It is said to be one of the United Kingdom’s most haunted hotels, “a legendary destination for paranormal investigators.” Situated on a Pagan burial ground and on top of two Ley lines that trace back to Stonehenge, this is already a recipe for the paranormal. Stay tuned if you want to know about the satanic rituals, strange happenings (like a face on a clock?), and many many many ghosts who haunt this house. If you've ever wanted to stay at a place where an incubus and succubus reside with a poltergeist and the ghosts of witches and bishops, look no further!

Helen Jewett was an American prostitute in the 1800s who was brutally murdered and subsequently burned one night in April of 1836. While this murder wasn't new or original or unique, it did interest the media because it involved sex, scandal, and murder. This highly publicized case changed journalism... but was it for the worse or for the better? Give this story a listen and tell us what you think!

This island in Italy is actually illegal to enter without the proper authorization... and is probably the most haunted place on earth. With a death toll over 100,000, it's no surprise that this place has ghosts. Everyone from victims of the bubonic plague to the mentally ill were killed or had died on this island with a surface that is more than 50% human ash. There are definitely ghosts here. And with a history that spans several hundred years, there are definitely quite a few stories here. So stay tuned for wrongful deaths, vampires, and illegal ghost hunters...

This hotel was built in 1909 and serves as the setting for Stephen King's novel, the Shining! But is it really haunted? Well, most people would say yes. Even though there haven't been that many people who have died here (it's just a regular hotel), it is considered to be one of the most haunted locations in America. Definitely stay tuned to listen to all the spirits who reside in this Colorado hotel (including a couple of friendly puppers!)

This asylum is the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America, and is supposedly the second largest in the world after the Kremlin in Moscow. And, even though it was built to house 250 patients, at its peak it held over 2,000 people in the same amount of space.

As you can imagine, this caused pretty terrible, cramped conditions, and likely caused a deterioration of mental health in many of the patients. Inhumane and barbaric treatments were used to lower the number of people staying at the asylum, including electroshock therapy and icepick lobotomies. Basically, the place was designed to improve mental health but the conditions here caused so so many people to die. Make sure to give this episode a listen to hear about some of the ghosts who still walk these halls...

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. So both of us are in #quarantine right now and slowly losing our minds so this episode is a bit of a wild card. Today we're talking about Twitter User @gr3gory88 and his story. This is a creepypasta, so what do you think? Real or not real? Personally, I think it could have been real right up until the end...

This is obviously a very scary time for everyone with the whole COVID-19 pandemic, but we hope that this can be a break from thinking about that. So enjoy us talking about this really really weird story and how neither of us would like to be in that situation at all ever. Also, fair warning, this episode has a bit of an audio problem but since it was so long we didn't want to re record, and hopefully it won't be too noticeable. And we're both looking forward to actually recording in person again, won't it be great to have some A+ audio quality!

And back to a bit of a lighter note, thank you so so much for following us on Instagram and listening to the podcast! Let us know if you like these kinds of paranormal stories! Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. This is obviously a very scary time for everyone with the whole COVID-19 spreading across the world, but we hope that this can be a break from thinking about that. This case, the murder of Jaden and Christopher, is probably one of the most wild. And it keeps getting wilder. So, if headlines like "Darknet teen who ‘butchered boy, 9, shared murder plans on WhatsApp hours earlier" and "Psychopathic 'monster' who butchered a nine-year-old boy and wrote online that 'killing the neighbour's child didn't feel too bad to be honest' is jailed for life in Germany" sound interesting, be sure to give us a listen.

And back to a bit of a lighter note, thank you so so much for following us on Instagram and listening to the podcast! As you probably know, we're both college students during this COVID-19 pandemic, so it's been a bit hard to manage college work, researching for grim on the side, and packing up to move home. Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. This week, we're back to Maddie as she tells us one of the worst cases out there. It's been covered before and will no doubt be covered again by podcasters in the future, but let me just say that it doesn't matter if you listen to it for the first or hundredth time, listening to what this man did never gets easier. Also, side note, the audio here might not be the best (again, sorry) - Saaniya's headphones are breaking but don't worry new ones are on the way so hopefully that'll be fixed for next time (recording a podcast when you're 3,000 miles apart is harder than it looks haha).

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. This week, Saaniya takes you over to Manchester with this great start to the new year. This story is absolutely horrific. This is the story of the Beast of Manchester and the awful things he did in the 1970s. About 3 conflicting views later, the only thing we're certain of is that this man is a killer. But how many people did he kill? Take a listen and let us know what you guys think.

Also, side note, the audio here might not be the best - we were trying out a new set up but we will try to get that fixed in the next episode!

We wanted to say thank you to everyone who followed us on instagram - we just hit 100 followers and 100 total plays! Thank you guys so much, we really appreciate. And a special thanks to @_dark.xix_ who sent us a lovely message on instagram!

So, what do you think about Trevor Hardy? How many people do you think he killed? Do you think his time in prison was justified? If you have any theories or stories of your own, be sure to email us at thegrimpodcast@gmail.com, or follow us on Instagram @grimpodcast; we would absolutely LOVE to hear from you!! And if you have any suggestions for cases you want to hear about, please let us know!

Goodnight pals, we love you all, and get ready for yet another wild ride! Until next week, Saaniya and Maddie x

Oh also, before I forget, here's that video I mentioned in case you wanted to know more about the Beast of Manchester:

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. A huge thank you to instagram user @kirstys600 who commented a guess on our mystery spot post on instagram! We ended up learning something new about Dalhousie which I think was pretty cool (who knew there were so many manors in Scotland that house a falconry)! In this weeks episode, Saaniya covers the history and ghosts of Skaill House. Happy last supernatural story of 2019! So, make yourself a snack and get ready to uncover the skeletons under the floorboards...

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. So, we've decided to do this thing where we post a lil clue or something on our instagram (@grimpodcast) around the middle of the week hinting at what the week's episode is gonna be about. This week, our clue was a picture of one of Scotland's most elaborate Z-plan castle (Saaniya promises she didn't pick this haunted castle just because it's called Castle Fraser and she' a little bit obsessed with Outlander don't worry). So even though this story is a little bit more fact than fiction, it's still a pretty cool haunting. Grab some coffee and maybe a scone with fresh cream if you're feelin fancy and join us on this little break from studying for finals!

And again, we just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has listened to our podcast and liked our recent post on the Amityville Murders, we really appreciate it!!! And a special thank you to everyone who gave us a 5 star rating on Apple podcasts, that means so much to us!

If you want to try and figure out what our next podcast is going to be about, our instagram is @grimpodcast. We'll be posting a clue mid week so definitelt check that out! And if you'd like to connect with us, drop us an email (thegrimpodcast@gmail.com)! Goodnight pals, we love you all, and get ready for yet another wild ride! Until next week, Saaniya and Maddie x

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. This week, Maddie takes you to Amityville, NY for probably one of the most wild stories we’ve covered so far. Filled with twists and turns, cover ups and accomplices, this story is one for the books. So anyway, make yourself some tea and get ready for a story that’ll make you question everything…

And we just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has listened to our podcast (we’re sorry for butchering literally all the names we’ve ever pronounced but we really do appreciate you guys taking the time to listen to us!)

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. This week Saaniya takes you to Edinburgh, to the World's End Pub on the Royal Mile. This night of these murders really was one that haunted this city then and honestly still does now. It's definitely one of the scariest stories because it sounds like such a normal night...

So maybe rethink that night out and instead get ready for this sequence of events that'll leave you very thankful for CCTV footage.

And hey, if you'd like to, you can follow us on Instagram (@grimpodcast) or drop us an email (thegrimpodcast@gmail.com)! We'd love to hear from you!

Also, we just wanted to say that we're so thankful for you guys! Taking the time out of your day to listen to our last two brain cells try to make functional sentences must be exhausting, but we're super thankful for it. Stay safe out there, friends, and get ready for yet another wild ride!

Until next week, Saaniya and Maddie

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. This week, Maddie takes you all the way to Flagstaff, AZ for the surprisingly whimsical story of the Haunted Monte Vista Hotel (I mean, we usually don't associate "haunted" with "fun," but trust us, it's actually a fun haunted story. Like this one isn't bad. Honestly, if you're new to supernatural podcasts this is where you should start it's quite low key. Ah you know I see where the whole tangent thing comes in...). So anyway, make yourself some coconut milk hot chocolate and get ready for a short but really interesting series of hauntings that'll be sure to come in handy if you're ever on a game show and they ask you about the haunted rooms at the Monte Vista.

(Also, excuse the technical difficulties at the beginning, Stick around, we promise it gets better!!)

So here's the thing, we're both at uni right now so we're kind of living on our last two brain cells during finals season (as you can probably tell aha). Wanna make our day? Our instagram is @grimpodcast, so definitely check us out there or drop us an email (thegrimpodcast@gmail.com)!

Goodnight pals, we love you all, and get ready for yet another wild ride! Until next week, Saaniya and Maddie x

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. This week Saaniya takes you to Aberdeen 40 years ago, when the murder of Dr Brenda Page shocked the community. Turns out being a geneticist can be a dangerous career choice. So snuggle up with some blankets and hot cocoa (and a couple cats, if you have them), and get ready for the twists and turns that this story'll take you on...

You know Maddie's not feeling well right now (😢) but you know what's better remedy than a bowl of noodle soup? A follow! Our instagram is @grimpodcast or drop us an email (thegrimpodcast@gmail.com)!

Goodnight pals, we love you all, and get ready for yet another wild ride!

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. This is Maddie's first time doing a supernatural story! Big round of applause it's a fun one (just the right amount of spooky, if I do say so myself). So this week we take you to the Dark Corner with the story of Poinsett Bridge in South Carolina (by the way, it's the oldest bridge in South Carolina and perhaps in the entire southeastern United States). Guys. Grab yourself a drink of choice (personally, I'd recommend hot chocolate; this feels like a hot chocolate kind of episode) and get ready for a trip through the 1800s!

And since this was Maddie's first paranormal story on the podcast, why don't you drop a follow, our instagram is @grimpodcast!

Happy first-paranormal-episode-of-Novemver pals, and get ready for yet another wild ride!

Until next week, Saaniya and Maddie

Hey there friends and welcome back to grim. This week (the official start to our second month of podcasting by the way!! we did it. we're real podcasters now!!), Saaniya takes you to Edinburgh in the Early 19th century, when Burke and Hare became two of the most prolific killers out there. With fun little historical facts that we hope will win you your next pub quiz scattered throughout this gruesome tale, join us with a cup of tea as we both use our last two brain cells to bring you this episode (in case you didn't know, a lamb is a baby sheep).

This episode is definitely one hell of a party (🎉🎉)!

We know, it sounds boring (history lesson ugh), BUT you don't have to write a paper on it and I promise you won't be tested on any of this information so feel free to sit around the bonfire with the spirits and listen to this spooky tale...

(also look emojis happy spooky season pals 🎃 🕸️ 🦇 👻)

Hey there friends and welcome to the first official episode of grim. This week, Maddie takes you though the story of Edmund Emil Kemper III aka the Co-Ed Killer (this guy is seriously messed up), and Saaniya apologizes in advance because she's quite ill at the moment (so if you're using headphones, we're sorry). She promises to be better next week though (let's see if she'll actually keep her word). Happy spooky season and get ready for a wild ride today pals cause this one is the perfect way to start off this podcast. We hope you enjoy!

Hey there friends, and welcome to grim. (and also happy spooky season). This is just a little teaser we put together for you all so you can get to know us a little bit and maybe figure out if you like our vibe. We (Maddie and Saaniya) are just two college students who just share an interest in this stuff. From watching Criminal Minds and Supernatural together to going to see ATWWD live (great podcast, 10/10 would listen again), we just find this stuff interesting... for some reason...

So basically, we're both in college. Which doesn't leave a lot of time for research-intense activities like running a podcast. So each week, we're going to switch off telling a story. This month, you get True Crime from Maddie and Supernatural from me! We really hope you enjoy this fun little project of ours, and we hope to see you guys soon!

And I guess that's a wrap,

Saaniya
