In this episode, I talk with my friend Serena Bauducco from Sweden, by way of Italy.
In this episode, we discuss Serena’s latest paper, which was published in Sleep Medicine Reviews.
Serena Bauducco, Meg Pillion, Kate Bartel, Chelsea Reynolds, Michal Kahn, Michael Gradisar,
“A bidirectional model of sleep and technology use: A theoretical review of How much, for whom, and which mechanisms”
Read the full paper here https://doi.org/10.1016/j.smrv.2024.101933
This study and its findings are going to be challenging for some people. As lately, a narrative vilifying and blaming electronic devices for sleep problems has emerged. In this work, Serena has stepped back and taken a holistic, scientific and non-biased view of the data and unpacked the nuances of this relationship.
Serena Bauducco is a researcher in the psychology department. She earned her PhD in 2017 with a thesis entitled “Adolescents’ sleep in a 24/7 society: Epidemiology and prevention.” She finished her international postdoc (Vetenskapsrådet) at Flinders University in South Australia in 2023.
Serena’s research focuses on the factors that may exacerbate or improve adolescents’ sleep, the relationship between sleep and mental health, and the potential of school-based interventions to improve teenagers´ sleep health and mental well-being. She is particularly interested in the link between technology use and sleep and how peers and parents may affect both behaviours. In her research, she has used survey studies (including longitudinal and social network analyses), experimental studies, and qualitative/mixed-method studies. Serena primarily teaches the prevention and implementation courses within the Psychology program and has supervised both Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.

In this episode, I am joined by Dr Hannah Scott. We specifically discuss her recent work, “Are we getting enough sleep? Frequent irregular sleep was found in an analysis of over 11 million nights of objective in-home sleep data. In this study, data were analyzed from registered users of the Withings under-mattress Sleep Analyzer (predominantly located in Europe and North America) who had ≥28 nights of sleep recordings, averaging ≥4 per week. Sleep durations (the average and standard deviation) were assessed across a ∼9-month period. The sample consisted of 67,254 adults (52,523 males, 14,731 females; aged mean ± SD 50 ± 12 years). About 30% of adults demonstrated an average sleep duration outside the recommended 7-9 h/night. Even in participants with an average sleep duration within 7-9 hours, about 40% of nights were outside this range. Only 15% of participants slept between 7 and 9 hours for at least 5 nights per week.

In this episode, I am joined by Dr Jade Murray. Dr. Jade M. Murray completed a PhD programme at the Monash University Sleep and Circadian Medicine Laboratory in 2018. Dr Murray's broad research interests include studying the effects of circadian misalignment on overall health in healthy and sleep-disordered populations and developing simplified methods for determining the timing of the circadian phase. An important innovation in her work has been tracking light-dark exposure data over time to build predictive models of circadian timing for the development of personalised delivery systems for sleep-wake interventions.
In this episode, we discuss Jade's recent paper "Murray JM, Magee M, Giliberto ES, Booker LA, Tucker AJ, Galaska B, Sibenaller SM, Baer SA, Postnova S, Sondag TAC, Phillips AJK, Sletten TL, Howard ME, Rajaratnam SMW. In this episode, I talk with Professor John Lesku
John is interested in most things related to sleep. Using behavioural observations, accelerometry for remote monitoring, and neurophysiological recording techniques, he seeks to provide insight into how sleep and sleep functions have evolved in different types of animals, from flatworms to birds and mammals. He also studies how ecological factors (e.g., predation risk, reproduction) influence the amount, composition, depth, and timing of sleep. Most recently, these interests have expanded to include how anthropogenic pollution influences sleeping brain activity in mammals and birds.

In this episode, I talk with my new friend Dr. Anne Aulsebrook. We continue our journey on learning about birds and sleep and discuss many fascinating topics. The peculiar mating practices and attraction with sleep loss in sandpiper birds
Dr. Anne Aulsebrook is a behavioral ecologist interested in activity patterns and sleep. During her PhD, she investigated the effects of urban light pollution on sleep in birds. More recently, she has become interested in the behaviour of shorebirds that breed under constant daylight in the arctic. Previous research has shown substantial diversity in the activity patterns of these birds. Intriguingly, male pectoral sandpipers have the least sleep also have the greatest reproductive success. How do males attract females when they have had hardly any sleep? How does activity relate to reproductive success in other shorebirds, with different mating systems? To what extent can male shorebirds change their activity in different social contexts? These are some of the questions that she is exploring during her postdoctoral fellowship.

In this episode, I talk to Professor Theresa Jones. Her main area of research is in the field of behavioural ecology, with a particular focus on understanding the causes and consequences of variability in mating systems, the role of chemical cues, and, most recently, the impact of artificial night lighting on individual fitness and community structure. She completed my undergraduate at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (UK) and my PhD at the Institute of Zoology (UK). During my PhD, I spent a year at the Instituto Evandro Chagas in Belém, Brazil, carrying out field observations and experiments. She commenced postdoctoral research in 1999 at Uppsala University (Sweden), exploring alternative male mating strategies in vertebrate (the ruff, Philomachus pugnax) and invertebrate (Hawaiian Drosophila) lekking species. In 2001, she was awarded a Royal Society Travelling Fellowship to conduct research at the University of Melbourne, where she has worked since, first as a postdoctoral research fellow with Prof Mark Elgar for six years and then as a Melbourne University Research Career Interruption Fellow. Currently employed in the School of BioSciences. In addition to my passion for behavioural ecology.

Changes in reindeer sleep regulation across the year: a central role for rumination? In this episode, I am joined by Melanie Furrer, who recently presented her study on sleep in reindeer.
Most non-hibernating animals maintain daily “circadian ”rhythms of sleep across the year, as well as “homeostatic” sleep-wake patterns in which increasing time awake is followed by increased sleep amount or intensity. Strikingly, ruminant reindeer in the Arctic show 24-h rhythmicity at the equinoxes but none at either solstice; summertime activity greatly exceeds wintertime activity. So far, nothing is known about their sleep or how it might be seasonally modulated.
Methods: We simultaneously recorded non-invasive electroencephalography EEG in four adult female reindeer for four days at The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, Norway in July, September, and December. Rapid eye movement, REM sleep, non-REM NREM sleep, and rumination were visually identified from the EEG, and slow-wave activity SWA, EEG power 1–18 4.5 Hz during NREM sleep, the classic marker for homeostatic changes in sleep pressure, was calculated.
Results: Although sleep in reindeer generally resembled that of other mammals, key novel adaptations were observed in July/September: n=4, December: n=3. Like most species, sleep-wake distribution paralleled daily activity during seasonally changing light-dark conditions and SWA during NREM sleep increased after prolonged wake periods.
Surprisingly, total sleep duration was roughly equal across seasons, and prolonged waking produced a lower SWA response in summer than in winter. As reported for some domestic ruminants, EEG during rumination showed typical characteristics of NREM sleep. Furthermore, rumination appeared to substitute for sleep under all observed conditions. Accordingly, SWA decreased across rumination, and total rumination and NREM sleep durations were negatively correlated. Homeostatic modelling of SWA further suggested that rumination was equivalent to sleep. Conclusions: We suggest that less pronounced SWA increases across waking in summer might indicate higher baseline sleep pressure during this season, possibly resulting from increased activity, food intake and light exposure. Within this context, rumination might partially substitute conventional sleep, permitting near-constant feeding in the arctic summer while compensating for increased sleep pressure.

Jill Dorrian is a Professor in Psychology with a PhD in sleep and chronobiology research and a Master of Biostatistics. From the beginning of her PhD, Jill conducted laboratory and field studies with a consistent focus on collaboration and translation. Her PhD and early post-doctoral work were supported by the Australian Shiftwork and Workload Consortium, a 10-year collaboration with Australian Rail Industry operators and safety regulators. This work informed fatigue risk management (the over-arching term to describe risks relating to sleep loss and performance impairment in the industry) in rail.
Following a fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, Unit for Experimental Psychiatry, she continued to conduct in-workplace studies for rail, emergency services, and health. More recently, having also worked with mining, construction, ports, and forestry, providing research and education to promote fatigue management.
As a champion for the importance of sleep for healthy development, she also works closely with colleagues in nursing and midwifery, investigating the relationship between sleep during pregnancy and maternal and fetal health. She has collaborated closely with Resilient Youth Australia, a not-for-profit dedicated to promoting health and learning for school students in Australasia.
Jill is heavily involved with research student supervision and training in publishing and other forms of research communication and was recognised by the Australian Graduate Research Council for excellence in graduate research supervision.
Much of her current work is focused on behavioural coping strategies for remaining healthy despite exposure to sleep loss. In particular, along with colleagues in psychology, nutrition, and activity, we study chronobehaviour – investigating the health impacts, not only of what we do but when we do it.

In this episode with Ashley Montero, we discuss his recent paper. Sleep and mental health are important aspects of human health that work concurrently. However, sleep and mental health disorders are often overlooked and undiagnosed in sports due to the negative stigma associated with them. Evidence suggests that athletes are disproportionately affected by mental health issues and sleep problems. Internal and external pressures contribute to psychological distress. Variable competition times, travel and stress are detrimental to sleep quality. Retirement from sport can deteriorate sleep and psychological wellbeing, particularly for those who retired involuntarily and identify strongly with their athletic role. When untreated, these issues can manifest into a range of clinical disorders.

In this episode, I meet with my new friend Aaron Bezzina. I found Aaron's latest research on LinkedIn and invited him on the podcast. Aaron is a PhD candidate at the University of Newcastle and an Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD). In 2020 Aaron commenced his PhD candidature at the University of Newcastle, researching workplace wellness initiatives' effects on health attitudes and behaviours within the Australian resource sector. Aaron’s research interests include workplace wellness and productivity, obesity, human factors, and occupational health and safety issues.
This episode discusses Aaron's latest publication, a review on workplace wellness programs.
Bezzina A, Ashton L, Watson T, James CL. Workplace wellness programs targeting weight outcomes in men: A scoping review. Obes Rev. 2022 Apr;23(4):e13410. doi: 10.1111/obr.13410. Epub 2022 Jan 25. PMID: 35076133.
Then we go in-depth into one of Aaron's studies investigating health and wellness in mining. Aaron found that self-reported height and weight measures indicated that less than 20 percent (18.9%) of participants were in a healthy BMI range, while there were effectively equal numbers of overweight (40.9%) and obese (39.1%) participants. Only 3.5% of participants met the daily recommendation for vegetables (5 serves), and shift workers had a greater association with elevated BMI than non-shift workers. Poor nutrition is likely to be a key component in elevated levels of overweight and obesity within this industry, with workplace factors compounding challenges workers face in implementing health behaviour change.
Bezzina A, Austin EK, Watson T, Ashton L, James CL. Health and wellness in the Australian coal mining industry: A cross sectional analysis of baseline findings from the RESHAPE workplace wellness program. And finally, we discuss this study on alcohol in Australian mining that Aaron was involved in that found metalliferous mining employees engage in at-risk levels of alcohol consumption significantly higher than the national average despite workplace policies.
James CL, Tynan RJ, Bezzina AT, Rahman MM, Kelly BJ. Alcohol Consumption in the Australian Mining Industry: The Role of Workplace, Social, and Individual Factors. Workplace Health Saf. 2021 Sep;69(9):423-434. doi: 10.1177/21650799211005768. Epub 2021 Apr 24. PMID: 33896275.

In this episode of the Combat Sports Series, I am joined by Dean Amasinger, Technical Director of the UFC Performance Institute in Shanghai China. Dean joins us today via a lockdown in Shanghai where he has chosen to stay lockdown within the Performance Institute. Dean is a former MMA fighter https://www.tapology.com/fightcenter/fighters/14113-dean-amasinger-renegade who competed in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) with Team UK and returned as a coach in Team UK vs Team Australia. I had a lot of fun talking to Dean about his former training partners such as Michael Bisping, Dan Hardy, Paul Daley and many more. Dean also shared some insights from his time in the TUF house. Mainly Dean and I discussed the aspects of fighter development, skill acquisition, strength & conditioning, crossover from rugby to wrestling and to MMA and how to identify the archetype of a UFC competitor. This was a great conversation and a must listen to those interested in combat sports, however, there are some great crossover points here for anyone looking for self-development or improvement. Its time to break it down with the MAN...the Myth ....The legend....the one and only Sonny Brown
Sonny started training martial arts seriously in 2007, beginning with Shoot Fighting, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling all at the same time at Langes MMA in Sydney. Sonny was able to be victorious in 3 MMA title bouts becoming a 3 time Australian Mixed Martial Arts Champion in the lightweight division beating standouts Dan Hooker and Damien Brown.
And he had one MMA victory via Gogoplata choke and at this stage am still the only person in Australia to do so which puts him in the company of Nick Diaz. He was awarded a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt in 2017 by my coach, 4th Degree Black Belt Anthony Lange and has continued to train, teach and still compete in grappling competitions. I also had a renewed interest in American Folkstyle wrestling.
His breakdowns and technical analysis videos have had high praise from Randy Couture, Matt Lindland, Karo Parisyan, Phil Davis and the coach of the Granby High wrestling school to name a few. In 2019, he started “The Sonny Brown Breakdown” podcast to have discussions on the training, teaching, health and education of mixed martial arts. Check out everything Sonny Brown related at https://www.sonnybrown.net/ and his fight record at https://www.tapology.com/fightcenter/fighters/21661-sonny-brown

In this episode, Michael and I discuss insomnia, chronobiology, performance and pediatric sleep.
Michael's overview in his own words.....
My working week consists of being a sleep scientist, a sleep psychologist, teaching Masters and PhD students, and running postgraduate degrees in clinical psychology - oh, and running a start-up on the side ... I’ve grown from a lone clinical psychologist starting up my own sleep clinic in 2005, helping people and families 1-on-1 to improve their sleep. Now, I lead a team of postdoc researchers, PhD and Masters students, and psychologists, and a sleep clinic that is attracting worldwide recognition. This has allowed me to invent novel evidence-based sleep treatments applicable across the lifespan. But I’m not completely satisfied with the slow pace of helping people 1-on-1. My techniques have expanded to group settings, and to schools. The first self-help book is complete (parents of school-aged children), and the first app for babies’ sleep is on its way. But the pace is still too slow for the ideas I generate and many institutions to ill-equipped to turn ideas into valuable products. Thus, WINK Sleep Online was born -https://winksleep.online

S 4 Ep 8 – The Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN) and the Royal Society with Prof Russell Foster
In this episode, we welcome Russell Foster. Russell is Professor of Circadian Neuroscience, Director of the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute (SCNi) and Head of the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford. He is also a Fellow at Brasenose College.
Russell’s research spans the neurosciences, but his research is focused upon two questions: (i) How is environmental light detected and processed by vertebrate photoreceptors for the regulation of circadian rhythms? One of his key findings was the discovery of another class of photoreceptor within the vertebrate eye based upon a small number of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs). These pRGCs not only regulate circadian rhythms but also sleep & arousal states, heart-rate and pupil constriction; (ii) How are circadian rhythms generated and what happens when these systems break-down in disease and under abnormal environmental conditions?
Russell Chairs the Royal Society Public Engagement Committee, The Cheltenham Science Festival and is a Trustee of the Science Museum Group. He contributes to radio, television and writes newspaper articles. He has co-written three popular science books and is working on his fourth.
He is the co-author with writer and broadcaster Leon Kreitzman of two popular science books on circadian rhythms, Rhythms of Life: The Biological Clocks that Control the Daily Lives of Every Living Thing and Seasons of Life: The Biological Rhythms That Enable Living Things to Thrive and Survive. He has also co-written a book titled Sleep: a Very Short Introduction. You can read more about Russell on his Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Foster.

S4P Radio, Sleep Science Audio Abstract 12: Sleep and Weight Cutting in Combat Sports Athletes
In our latest S4P Radio, Audio Abstract we review a new article published in the Journal of Exercise and Nutrition, entitled “The Effect of Water Loading for Acute Weight Loss Following Fluid Restriction on Sleep Quality and Quantity in Combat Sports Athletes”. Combat sport athletes commonly engage in established and novel acute weight-loss strategies to achieve weight division targets. The effect of such practices on sleep is unknown. Methods: Twenty-two combat sports athletes wore wrist actigraphy devices for nine nights during a training camp and completed questionnaires assessing daytime sleepiness, insomnia, sleep apnoea and chronotype. Athletes were assigned to a control (CG) or water loading group (WLG). Both followed a low residue diet for 96h, and restricted fluid for 24h before weigh-in. Prior to restriction, the CG consumed 40ml/kg and WLG consumed 100ml/kg fluid daily.

In this episode of S4P we take a look at "Do players and staff sleep more during the pre- or competitive season of elite rugby league?" by Johnpaul Caia, Tannath J. Scott, Shona L. Halson & Vincent G. KellyThis study establishes the sleep behaviour of players and staff during the pre- and competitive seasons of elite rugby league. For seven days during both the pre- and competitive seasons, seven rugby league players and nine full-time staff from one professional Australian rugby league club had their sleep monitored via wrist actigraphy and self-report sleep diaries. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance determined differences between the pre- and competitive season in players and staff, with effect sizes (ES) used to interpret the practical magnitude of differences. Findings show an earlier bedtime and wake time for players (−34 min, ES = 1.5; ±0.5 and −39 min, 2.1; ±0.5 respectively) and staff (−29 min, ES = 0.8; ±0.3 and −35 min, ES = 1.7; ±0.4 respectively) during pre-season when compared to the competitive season. Despite this, no differences were seen when considering the amount of time in bed, sleep duration or sleep efficiency obtained between the pre- and competitive seasons. Our results suggest that early morning training sessions scheduled during pre-season advances wake time in elite rugby league. However, both players and staff can aim to avoid reductions in sleep duration and sleep efficiency with subsequent adjustment of nighttime sleep patterns. This may be particularly pertinent for staff, who wake earlier than players during both the pre- and competitive seasons.

Ian C. Dunican, Jennifer Walsh, Charles C. Higgins, Maddison J. Jones, Kathleen Maddison, John A. Caldwell, Hillman David & Peter R. Eastwood (2018) Prevalence of sleep disorders and sleep problems in an elite super rugby union team, Journal of Sports Sciences, DOI: 10.1080/02640414.2018.1537092
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of sleep disorders in an elite rugby union team using in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG) and sleep questionnaires. Twenty-five elite rugby union players underwent a night of PSG during the “off-season” of the Super Rugby competition to assess their sleep. Of interest were measurements that detected the presence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA; apnea-hypopnea index ≥5 events/hr) and the presence of moderate-severe periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMs; ≥15 events/hr). Players completed sleep-related questionnaires to assess daytime sleepiness, perception of insomnia, risk of OSA, and the presence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and underwent basic anthropometric assessments including body mass index and neck circumference. OSA was present in 24% (n=6) of players and PLMs ≥15 events/hr in 12% (n=3). Questionnaire responses showed that all players had insomnia defined subthreshold insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness, two players were identified as being at risk for OSA and none were classified as having RLS. In conclusion, sleep disorders and excessive sleepiness are common in elite rugby union players. A process to identify and manage sleep disorders should be considered by teams to optimise their physical recovery, athletic performance and to safeguard their health.

In this episode we take a look at sleep in a fly in fly out mining operation.
Abstract: Good sleep is essential for optimal performance, yet few studies have examined the sleep/wake behaviour of elite athletes. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of early-morning training on the amount of sleep obtained by world-class swimmers. A squad of seven swimmers from the Australian Institute of Sport participated in this study during 14 days of high-intensity training in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. During these 14 days, participants had 12 training days, each starting with a session at 06:00 h, and 2 rest days. For each day, the amount of sleep obtained by participants was determined using self-report sleep diaries and wrist-worn activity monitors. On nights that preceded training days, participants went to bed at 22:05 h (s=00:52), arose at 05:48 h (s=00:24) and obtained 5.4 h (s=1.3) of sleep. On nights that preceded rest days, participants went to bed at 00:32 h (s=01:29), arose at 09:47 h (s=01:47) and obtained 7.1 h (s=1.2) of sleep. Mixed model analyses revealed that on nights prior to training days, bedtimes and get-up times were significantly earlier (p

In this weeks episode we review a paper I had published earlier this year.
Laboratory and home comparison of wrist-activity monitors and polysomnography in middle-aged adults.
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s41105-017-0130-x
Accurate measurement of time at lights out is essential for calculation of several measures of sleep in wrist-activity monitors. While some devices use subjective reporting of time of lights out from a sleep diary, others utilise an automated proprietary scoring algorithm to calculate time at lights out, thereby negating the need for a sleep diary. This study aimed to compare sleep measures from two such devices to polysomnography (PSG) measures (In laboratory) and against each other when worn at home (At home). Fifty middle-aged adults from the Raine Study underwent overnight PSG during which they wore an ActiGraph™ and a Readiband™. They also wore both devices at home for 7 nights. The Readiband uses an automated proprietary algorithm to determine time at lights out whereas the ActiGraph requires completion of a sleep diary noting this time. In laboratory, compared to PSG: Readiband underestimated time at lights out, sleep onset, and wake after sleep onset, overestimated sleep latency and duration (p

In this week's sleep science audio abstract we take a look at the adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). ACE represents substantial threats to public health and affect about 58% of youth in the US. In addition to their acute effects such as injury and physical trauma, ACEs are associated with an increased risk of several negative health outcomes throughout the life course. Emerging evidence suggests sleep disorders may be one such outcome, but existing studies have not been systematically reviewed and summarized. This systematic review summarizes the evidence concerning the relationship between ACEs and sleep disorders and disturbances, with a focus on adult women.

Rob Wilson comes from a formal education in manual therapy with 15+ years of experience as both a practitioner and teacher. He resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife Thomi where they have owned and operated CrossFit Virginia Beach since 2006.In the past decade and a half Rob has had the good fortune to work with an enormous variety of athletes ranging from amatuer, nationally and internationally ranked athletes in everything from power lifting and sailboat racing, to individuals in the US Naval Special Warfare Program.
Rob truly enjoys working with the tactical communities of the U.S. Armed Forces. Over the course of his career he has had the honor to help serve many active duty service members and veterans, through both his private human performance consultation work, and through groups like the Resiliency Project – which seek to further the resources available to military groups.
Prior to creating the Art of Breath series with Brian Mackenzie, where they work closely with Stanford Universities Neuroscience department, Rob was an original member of the world renowned MobilityWod staff under the direction of Dr. Kelly Starrett. Dr. Starrett and MobilityWOD was influential in Rob’s development as a professional in the human performance sector. Rob is a passionate teacher to the core. Throughout the course of his career as a manual therapist and coach one thing became abundantly clear; it’s better to teach a person to fish. Without education athletes are left to unknowingly repeat patterns of behavior that may not be pursuant to the actual desired outcome. That is to say the best remedy is often learning. Rob’s journey is about developing a deeper understanding of human performance to better serve those who wish to actualize their potential.

"Matt and I initially met over coffee to talk about running, after our partners had suggested we meet. Six months later we were training for an 100km mountain ultramarathon and he went on to complete the race, having not run more than a half marathon previously. Through the course of the final stages of training, and the race itself, Matt was conned in to a sleep study by myself.
Matt is a father who enjoys gardening and getting out on the trails on the weekends. He has worked in small and large scale mining operations across Australia for 15 years, and also served in the Australian Army for 6 years. In this episode, I speak to Joanna about her Ph.D. research at UWA. Joanna has spent over a decade in the fitness industry including 6 years as the regional Master Coach for the Australian Institute of Fitness (WA). With over 15 years of dance training and conditioning experience, Joanna fills her passion for teaching as a pole dancing instructor. Joanna is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia and is conducting research into the science of pole dancing. The overall aim of her research is to build foundation knowledge on the psychological (participation motives and outcomes), physiological (metabolic and cardiovascular demand, fitness and body composition changes) and biomechanical (muscle activation, kinematics and injury surveillance) characteristics of pole dancing.
Pole dancing has become a popular form of physical activity over the last 10 years; however, little research has been devoted to understanding pole dancing as a form of physical activity from an exercise science perspective. The outcomes of Joanna’s research will this assist in educating the community, health professionals and studio owners on the associated benefits, limitations and risks of pole dancing; plus serve as a platform for future research to be conducted in the areas of pole dancing psychology, physiology and biomechanics.

Joanna is recruiting females for a training study looking at the effects of pole dancing on the body and mind. To be eligible participants must be female, over 18 years, uninjured and able to exercise, and have not participated in regular pole dancing classes in the past. Participants will attend a testing session at UWA completing a 2D DXA body composition scan, fitness tests and a survey. They will then attend two pole dancing classes a week (average 60 minutes in duration) for 8 weeks at a Perth-based studio before returning to UWA for follow up tests. Pole dancing terms commence late October so if interested please contact Joanna ASAP.

In this episode #009, I have a chat with my new friend Gavin McClurg via Zoom. Gavin is based in Idaho, USA. I have recently been working with Gavin for his sleep/recovery and performance optimisation strategy in his lead up to the Red Bull X-Alps a paragliding / foot race across the Alps from Salzburg to Monaco. In ten days Gavin flew 1560 kilometres, walked 498 (12+ marathons) and scaled 52,000 meters of vertical ascent on foot (Everest 5 times). Gavin makes my finish at Leadville 100 and other ultra-marathons look amateur with this impressive resume.
Gavin is no stranger to adventure and exploration. He is a 2015 National Geographic “Adventurer of the Year” for his unpowered paragliding expedition across the Canadian Rockies. He became the first person to traverse the full length of the Alaska Range by foot and paraglider (unsupported) in 2016. He is the owner, founder and Captain of “Offshore Odysseys”, a global kitesurfing/surfing/sailing expedition. He has twice circumnavigated the world by sail, living at sea for 13 straight years, including short-handed roundings of both notorious capes (Horn and Good Hope). Gavin holds the current North American-record for foot launched cross-country paragliding, a flight of 240 miles deep into Montana from his home town of Sun Valley, Idaho.
