A beautiful coming-of-age story filled with melancholy, sadness, friendship, and love. The movie stays true to the book and both are worth your time. The story centres around a teenager entering high school. If that wasn't messy enough, he deals with past trauma and present mental health issues. The story tackles big topics with grace and authenticity. There is appropriate levity that helps balance out the depth of pain present. This work doesn't handle the topics with Kid Gloves, it's appropriate and legitimate in all its expressions. Akin to the Breakfast Club but much more Real. Most importantly, I found hope here. Stephen King's memoir on the craft of writing. The book is divided into two main sections: The part that gives us history on King and how he came to writing and the instructional part on how to be a better writer. If you are a Stephen King fan but are not a writer and have no intention on being one, you can still enjoy this book. If you don't enjoy the work of Stephen King but you are an aspiring writer, you need this book more than you may know. If you are like me and enjoy reading King's work and also aspire to be a better writer, you're in for a real treat.
Stephen King doesn't pull punches and is very direct. At times, his advice isn't an opinion, it's fact. I enjoy how he writes about himself and the love he shows for his family. This book was one of the easiest reads I've ever had. I don't mean in diction or that it was so thrilling I couldn't put it down. But it has a quality to it that I felt strongly despite it being foreign to my nature; it was easygoing.
No matter the situation, the protagonist, seemingly by nature and nurture, handled everything with ease no matter how physically or emotionally challenging. This young man is not invincible by any means, he just continually rises to every occasion and conflict with grace. Even admitting failure with honesty and stoicism in a manner genuine despite fulfilling the cliche' of the honourable cowboy.
The lack of some punctuation, quotation marks, was at first jarring, but then became appreciated and the novel read smoother. I don't want to categorise this as a Journey of Self Discovery manifested by a teenage cowboy but that's what it is. Despite this, it feels authentic and not repetitive.
And I, too, learned about myself by reading this book. Which surprised me. Until the last few pages, I felt like this was just a good yarn - a great story of adventure but in a tame package. However, something clicked with me. And stuck. No Spoilers. "No Country for Old Men" is NOT part of the Border Trilogy! (REVIEW - WEEK 17, YEAR 4)

I'm usually great at separating the Art from the Artist but in this case the Art IS the Artist. Oscar Wilde said it better in "Picture of Dorian Gray" but here Chuck explains it as well:
"It's always been my theory that criticism is just veiled autobiography, whenever someone writes about a piece of art, they're really just writing about themselves."
Chuck talks a lot about glam metal. And other types of hard rock and "metal" music. After 20 years of this being on the shelves, I still learned some cool stuff from it that I never knew. And checked out some music I had never given a shot before too.
Chuck IS funny. And a good writer. I haven't read (m)any tongue-in-cheek memoir style books before but alongside his entertaining writing is a lot of blatant dismissive opinions on the new/nu metal of the time he was writing. He sounds like a crotchety old man who can't be objective at all. And in the epilogue he admits it but that doesn't make it any better.
Also after 20 years this doesn't age well. But I doubt he cares because in his own words:
"And when I read my high school journal and realize what a homophobic, racist, sexist, and genuinely unlikable person I was at the age of seventeen, I force myself to laugh."
Perhaps he forced himself to laugh because he didn't want to take any responsibility and change or mature much. He still reads as pretty unlikable for all the reasons he listed above.
He knows a lot about music. And sometimes even expresses it well. And he's entertaining. But he's also unapologetic in a Trumpian, Locker Room Talk kind of way that is at times, hard to spend time with. Will I read more Chuck Klosterman? Yes. But with cringe-coloured glasses because of this first experience.

King says that satire comes from mistrust. That's evident. What isn't apparent is who the target audience really is. The book is well-written contemporary read that's mostly a smooth read albeit with constant interruptions and interludes that seemingly make no sense but more likely are just over my head.
The book takes place in Southern Alberta and tells a contemporary story that questions traditions but at times, in a very indirect way. There's a heavy reliance on Coyote to be a trickster and a lot of the nonsense that is written seems to be irrelevant.
Names seem to be significant but half the time they aren't made clear as to why or what we're supposed to get from it. The satire oozes from the page and the important questions and challenges about indigenous people's in Canada are also obvious. As well as relations to tradition and questions of Why. But there's enough disjointedness to make me wonder what I'm missing and if I'm really missing it, or it's just fluff.

I almost regret owning such a beautiful edition of such a frustrating book. The first half of the story is lovely. But the latter half is not only confusing, (animals in human jails, toads and humans being the same size, toads riding horses, etc.) it's also incredibly annoying.
We have a tale where a character who treats everyone like rubbish and endangers lives selfishly... in the end his friends stand by him as he escapes from his consequences. What a poor example! I tried to give the benefit of the doubt, thinking this a tale of Nature. How one can not change their nature, they simply are what they are. But the story is negligent! The character in question does not receive their just desserts, in fact, they are seemingly rewarded FIRST for their antics and THEN, at the last second, seem to change their behaviour. Perhaps.
The story attempts to be "cute" and fails. I also felt that the story shifts too heavily from what it sets up to what it becomes - a soft story focusing on multiple characters that then zeros in on one ghastly example of life. What an affront to my palate.

This collection houses only a small fraction, less than 10 percent, of the short stories Guy wrote. There are cheeky stories that extend an obvious moral to pay attention to and ones that delve into psychological horror - almost all provide opportunity for social commentary.
At various points the writing definitely reflects the time, the 1800's, and can be tedious and dry. Other times there is more economy in Maupassant's words. In either regard, he's a good storyteller and his short stories are mostly enjoyable in content.
If you enjoy a reflection of human nature and social life, along with how one is to interact with themselves and society, perhaps give this a shot. Most times, these stories hold up an accurate mirror to Us at large and how we operate in relation to one another. This immediately became one of my favourite books. Top Shelf.
The language is pure poetry and balanced with harsh pictures of reality painted by a graceful hand that knows exactly what they're doing. The juxtaposition between brutality, in various forms, and graceful storytelling with beautiful prose is perfection.
I didn't think of this novel as a "coming of age" story but I suppose it is, albeit a beautifully unconventional one. The pangs of youth permeate and then reverberate into adulthood where we can pine for those relics of simpler, more innocent times.
The Virgin Suicides is a Slice of Life tragedy that feels light and airy amongst the crushing weight of Life - flower petals picked up in the calm breeze meeting a torrential storm. These contrasts don't fight each other but play well together, like a perfectly orchestrated mural of oil and water on the surface of an infinity pool depicting not only the pure pain of puberty but also the hurt of leaving it behind.
Read. This. Book.

The book promises to be a "feel-good story" and it delivers. However, it is filled with familiar tropes that it carries on a little too plainly and transparently. The writing is more like a child's picture book rather than a novel. I don't mean in a grammatical sense but rather in the storytelling. Everything is too familiar and despite the book's main message: everyone being a unique individual, it is incredibly unoriginal.
I believe it's possible to tell this story with strength in storytelling and a quality in writing unfortunately not seen here. However... As I mentioned earlier, it does deliver some "feel good." Although they don't necessarily surpass the cringe-worthy moments of predictability and After School Special gone to extreme, there are moments here that do remind me of other perspectives in teaching and in being a student.
Most importantly is the lesson of Perception being Reality and how that can weigh on someone. It's one I needed a reminder about. In conclusion, if you want an Easy and predictable read about a student with academic/behavioural issues that ends with positivity and hope, I guess this could be for you. No Spoilers. Lolita was described as having "Savage Humour". It's a slow starter but eventually picks up pace until things spiral out of control and we reach a disturbing climax.
The diction in this book is pure romanticism: an abuse of adjectives. Things are described so beautifully with flowery language that it's easy to get lost. Everything is so purposeful and delicate and executed without much a misstep.
The language is coupled with the circumstance in such a perfect marriage that they both rely on each other completely. The style of prose and the plot are so inseparable that it makes the book Art. And the novel can be appreciated as such even without asking the reader to ponder anything further.
Yet it does challenge the audience to analyse their morals and someone else's actions in such a way that it's visceral despite the artistic distractions. I've never read anything like it before. This book is incredibly beautiful in aesthetic. But that's all. It is Out of touch, Pandering, Repetitious, Basic, and bursting with Humble Brag.
The book is marketed as a memoir/autobiography and inscribed as "for me" yet proceeds more like the lamest Self Help book you couldn't even imagine and the author attempts to tell you how you can be a better You with nothing but tired and surface clichés.
The constant inner dialogue within narration is also incredibly cringe-worthy. The constant interruptions of thought to give himself a pat on the back or to unnecessarily digress in an attempt at humour fall more than flat, they leave a depression.
The cover, layout, and photos are a joy. But not one that will come even close to outweighing the horrendous "poetry" and prose in the book. If you have money to burn and want a pretty looking book for the shelf, I would still slap it out of your hand and say, "you can do better."

A quick and easy read; the writing is filled with beautiful language - gentle verses that moved me along in a sweet melancholy. Presented as a dystopian fiction, the story gives the reader some structural elements of what's happening but no reason why. I enjoyed the majority of the book because it flowed effortlessly and with care; the poetry engaged me past all the anxieties of what was actually happening. I suppose it did such a good job of engaging me into what the characters must have felt that I didn't realise my fate until it was too late. No Spoilers (REVIEW - WEEK 9, YEAR 4)

An emotional journey that also ignites cognitive conversation. This is one of the Saddest books I've ever read.
A man with low enough in IQ to be vulnerable, abused in childhood and adulthood alike, and unaware of so much in the world, undergoes an experiment to raise his mental capabilities. The book is written through "Progress Reports" before, during, and after the experiment has taken place, by the subject.
Flowers For Algernon reverently, but firmly, asks the reader to consider Nature/Nurture, how we Value certain lives over others, and Who gets to Play God and Why?
The story engages the heart and mind evenly and gets to the core of human experience. It is unquestionably relatable and challenging to any reader who can comprehend the words. Please read this book. If you have Empathy within you, it will humble you.Spoilers (REVIEW - WEEK 8, YEAR 4)

East of West is a story about the Power of Belief. Belief in Cults, The Spirit/The Self, and Sacrifice.
These were beautifully designed and very uniform. I felt like I was reading something that should be treated with a certain reverence. The presentation was so immaculate it deserved my respect.
In some ways this is a classic retelling of what happens to those blinded and drunk off power who pursue nothing but personal gain. But it has many cool complexities with other elements such as faith, fate, and Armageddon. The Four Horsemen Element is cool as well, and ultimately, we have a story about family and relationships.
These books are great at establishing and maintaining a Myth. The illustrations and layout are dynamic and contemporary - bright colours that fit the fiction well. I was also inspired several times by some lines that made me self-reflect. Great read. Great series. This is pretty high on my shelf. No Spoilers (REVIEW - WEEK 8, YEAR 4)

I review the novel, "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides. It is a Family Saga/Epic tale with Coming of Age and Slice of Life flavours. The reader enjoys stories through three generations, some anecdotes taken from the author's own life inserted, of a Greek family that found their way to America. The bulk of the story takes place in the late 60s through the eyes of a teen trying to navigate their world. It is about transitioning culturally, and otherwise, and is all Process, not Destination.
