The NAUI Dive Team Report is a weekly podcast to inform the general public and divers on trends and issues affecting the sport. Topics covered in the report by host and NAUI Instructor Greg Martin will include dive safety, training, equipment and environmental awareness. Interviews with dive industry leaders and special guests.
It is the mission of Gulf World Marine Institute Inc. (GWMI) to provide funding and operational assistance and services related to the rescue, rehabilitation and release back into their natural habitat of stranded marine mammals and sea turtles, as well as to facilitate scientific research and provide educational opportunities related to such work. On January 23, 1960 Jacques Piccard and then USN Lt. Don Walsh dropped the bathyscaphe Trieste to the bottom of the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench some 35,797 feet down. Imagine having a resume that includes the discovery of Mayan artifacts and sacrificial pits, a lost city in Guatemala, the first primate in the Dominican Republic, and other ancient animal and human remains.

ADM Exploration Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to underwater exploration, discovery and education, while promoting diver safety and safety of the diving industry. According to Bowen, “ADM Exploration Foundation is an organization that travels around and does a lot of extreme diving stuff, but we also work with a lot of scientists, research organizations, governmental agencies, so on and so forth, to better suit whatever it is we discover.”
Ninety percent of the Foundation’s diving occurs in inland lakes or caves and falls within the realm of technical diving, which requires special training. That’s why Curt Bowen directed and filmed a new social media short called Go No Farther to teach people about the importance of training for cave diving.
The Go No Farther video can be viewed through Advanced Diver Magazine, Facebook and the ADM Exploration Foundation website. They also hope to work with scuba training agencies to incorporate the video into their certification courses.

In 1997, Captain Charles Moore first discovered the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and authored the book, The Plastic Ocean.

There are some very fine programs at the college level for students to learn diving and how it can play into a diving career. Dan Walter, assistant professor & coordinator and scuba instructor with Western Illinois University, is part of one such program.
“Let’s create something that is going to help our students get a job. ... We have so many different majors on our campus that utilize scuba diving in one form or another as part of the job.”
Earn college credits through scuba! There may very well be opportunities in your area. Check with your local universities to find out if they offer student diver programs.
If based in Florida, you can find NAUI professionals at the University of Florida offering prerequisites for advanced and scientific diver training. Or earn your NAUI open water, nitrox/deep diver, or scuba rescue diver certifications at the University of South Florida.
Whether you’re a new diver just taking your basic open water certification or a skilled diver wanting to learn a new specialty, the training is key to your success!

Did you know air is a mixture of 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and approx. 1% other trace gases?
“The acronym NITROX means any combination of oxygen and nitrogen. The first breath you took when you came into this world was a nitrox mix – 21 oxygen.”
One aspect of diving that involves O2 is the introduction of nitrox – utilizing higher percentages of O2 in a typical mix.

Dick is a pioneer in the fields of hyperbaric medicine, diving medicine and diver training, especially in the use of breathing gases. He founded the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD) and the American Nitrox Divers International (ANDI).
NAUI has, for a long time, been a very strong advocate for the ocean and sea life health.

Zale Parry (NAUI #A12) was research diver starring in the television’s first underwater documentary series, Kingdom of the Sea, in 1954. She made a record-setting 209-foot dive that same year, distinguishing women as skilled divers. She also starred in the 1958 “Sea Hunt” television series, which generated excitement in scuba as a recreational activity. The popular show began its four-year run on national television in 1958. It generated excitement in scuba as a recreational activity. It starred Lloyd Bridges, with Parry as the female role. During the show, Parry taught Bridges how to scuba dive for the program.
