Let’s welcome Senior Magic Designer for Wizards of the Coast, Gavin Verhey to the show. Gavin has been making Magic for over 7 years and is the one to carry the creative torch into the future. Gavin has a background in creative writing, and he loves to bring new ideas to the Magic multiverse. He’s worked on so many modern era Magic sets and is bringing new mechanics to the game with Commander and multiplayer centric sets such as Conspiracy and Battlebond. Gavin’s passion for Magic is only enhanced by his open mindedness. He loves to travel and see the world. In this episode, I’m talking to the talented Magic player, poker player, and MasterChef finalist, David Williams.
David first time play poker while at a Pro Tour many years ago. Through his love of strategy games and incredible skill, David went on to win a World Series of Poker bracelet and made a career from professional poker.
David is fiercely competitive, and smart enough to dismantle any game he gets his hands on. And that’s how David got onto the show MasterChef, and beat out a room fill of competitors to make it to the finals.
He’s been a pillar of the Magic community for a long time and I’m so happy to have him on the show.
It was really cool hearing stories of David’s journey.
It just goes to show that being competitive and thinking strategically bring success in many situations, from Magic, to poker, to competitive cooking shows.

The Modfather, Ian Dixon joins us to explain how important chat moderation is to building communities.
Let’s welcome MTG aficionado, and marketing professional, Andrew Magrini to the show. In this episode, Andrew and I are going to discuss the possible marketing direction that Wizards of the Coast is heading in. Andrew noticed an interesting press release from the Martin Agency, a big time ad agency that handles big time clients. The MTG community has been vocal at times about where Wizards is taking the game, and there has also been a lot of speculation about the future of Magic. For the past 4 seasons all of my guests have talked about Magic’s future as a digital game. Andrew and I put on our ad agency and marketing tin foil hats to break it down for you. This has been a fascinating topic for some time now. And since this interview was recorded a little bit ago, it’s interesting to see some of our predictions solidify as Wizards rolls out it’s strategy. I'm talking to advertising and marketing expert Andrew Magrini about what's going in Wizards of the Coast marketing. What could be in store for the community? We put on our tin foil hats and stare into the tea leaves about a recent press release.
I’m happy to welcome pro player, 2015 World Champion, and Class of 2018 Pro Hall of Fame inductee, Seth Manfield. Seth is an incredible player, sweeping multiple GPs, crushing 2015 Worlds, and grinding almost every premier level tournament. Even as a kid, Seth was a skilled player, playing in the Junior Super Series and earning several Pro Tour invites, even when his mom didn’t let him go. Seth also loves to teach about the game, offering private coaching, and writing strategy for TCG player. Seth’s recent Pro Tour Ixalan win solidified him as player that’s here to stay and change the landscape of competitive Magic. Seth shares about his journey, and his pride as a father. In this episode I’ll be talking to the future of Magic: The Gathering, our kids. Who are the little mages that will carry the planeswalker spark into the future? Dana Fischer, little Nissa cosplayer and GP grinder, is barely big enough to the hold the cards, but she knows how to cast them. She’s beaten many opponents playing Elves. Nathan Steuer, competes at almost every tournament he can. A member of Team Versus Games from the San Francisco bay area, he’s ready to chew up anyone that stands in his way. Ethan Brown, a wiz kid from Portland stunned the coverage team when he made it to the finals of GP LA piloting Modern Affinity. Armed with a fierce knowledge of the metagame, he is eager to return to the Pro Tour. Miley Chen, this young spellslinger from Boston enjoys EDH, draft, and most importantly griefing her dad, Mainn. They practice drafts together often so I won’t be surprised if I see Miley at the Pro Tour soon. Leo Strober-Cohen, hails from Magic’s home town of Seattle. He’s excited to brew up decks and experiment in the game of Magic. He cares about making Magic more accessible in cost to all players that love the game. Quinn Kiefer, proud member of the Kiefer Brothers trio, Quinn has battled with the biggest names in Magic. Quinn is attending his first Pro Tour later this year at Pro Tour 25th Anniversary. All of these rising stars are eager to compete at the Pro Tour and one day see themselves in the Hall of Fame. In this episode, I’m talking to local Seattle Magic player, Daniel Duterte. Daniel defended this house by winning the Legacy portion of GP Seattle 2018. Such is the dream, show up to your hometown GP, and win the whole thing. Daniel defeated some major pros during the 15 rounds of swiss and 3 rounds of single elimination Top 8, including Brian Braun-Duin and Sam Black. Daniel scooped to his friend in round 15, but other than that, he technically went undefeated throughout his entire run during the Legacy GP. That’s quite historic considering shortly after during the Standard GP, Chinese player Gan Yan also went undefeated with a staggering 18-0 to claim the Standard trophy. Wow, the hometown of Magic, Seattle, does not mess around. Back to back undefeated winners in the double GP in Seattle. I’m so happy to share my interview with the Seattle hometown hero, Daniel Duterte.

In this episode, I’m talking to the pioneer of Magic streaming coverage, Rashad Miller. In 2009, Rashad set up a computer and pointed a 480p video stream at a pair of Magic players battling it out in a PTQ.
The quality wasn’t great, you couldn’t really see the cards, and audio was dodgy, but it marked the beginning of a journey that would change the way how Magic gets broadcasted. After that, Rashad went on attend every Grand Prix he could, broadcasting matches of Magic across the internet.
Eventually, Star City Games and then Wizards of the Coast picked up Rashad to produce Magic coverage as we see it today.
Rarely do we have influencer that has helped the gaming community in so many ways, and I’m excited to share my interview with Rashad Miller.

In this episode, I’m talking to one of the OG’s of the MTG community, Ben Seck. Ben hails from down under, that’s Australia for all you non-Australian people! Ben was an early voice and community builder of the Magic scene in Australia many years ago. He organized tournaments, lent cards to pros like Kai Budde, and quickly found himself traveling the world, and playing Magic. Ben did quite well in Grand Prix and Pro Tours, and eventually landed a job in the gaming industry. Ben credits the opportunities he’s received getting jobs in the gaming industry to his involvement in Magic. Ben is excited to see the Magic community flourish. In this episode, I’m speaking with the champion of white weenie, Craig Wescoe. Craig is a legendary pro player who’s been playing on the pro tour ever since he was a teenager.
Craig used to roll with the old school players and decided to play Magic professionally after teaching philosophy at the university level. Craig’s understanding of critical thinking makes him a deep learner and a fierce competitor. Craig has also been writing Magic strategy content for years and recently published his millionth word online. Craig also shares with us his personal philosophy on his Christian faith, veganism, and the stewardship he has towards other people, animals, and the earth. In this episode, I’m talking to the master of Legacy Elves, Daniel Nguyen. Daniel is a Seattle Legacy player who dedicated himself to testing and grinding tournaments.
Daniel’s experience and long history with the game lead to him creating a primer on Elves, which has been standard reading for Magic players around the world.
Daniel talks with me about growing up playing Magic as a kid, and what he’s doing to help preserve Legacy in today’s Magic community.

In this episode, I’m talking to the commentator, streamer, and host, TJ Rogers. TJ is an advocate of Magic streams, and wants to help more players and local game stores broadcast their games on the internet. TJ is interested in solving the technical challenges that comes along with streaming. What camera to buy, how to set up your computer, what the overlay should look like, what should the feature match area look like? TJ believes that live streaming matches with players on the internet builds community because it’s a way for more people to feel like they’re at the game store playing magic. TJ is also researching ways of integrating cutting edge card reader technology into live streaming to deliver a better viewing experience. I caught up with TJ in the fall of 2017. In this episode, I’m talking to rapper, comedian, filmmaker, and Magic player, Billy the Fridge. Billy started with local rap battles in the Seattle area and making his own films on a budget. Soon, his creativity made it to the front page of Reddit and where his thoughtful lyrics and edgy visual style caught the attention of millions. Billy is true Magic player at heart, writing and performing Cardboard Crack, an ode the game we love. Since then, Billy has completed his latest album “ill!” which is out now. I’m talking to legendary player, Jay Schneider, the creator of the first Burn Deck, popularly known as Paul Sligh Red. Jay created Sligh Red because it was play tested to beat his good friend Paul Sligh, who ironically was an avid blue player. In doing so, Jay created the concept of the Mana Curve, which is now a foundation of how Magic is played and decks are built. Jay also worked for Wizards R&D where he helped play test paper products and had a big role in developing the hugely successful Duels of the Planeswalker game for Xbox.
I’m amazed to hear of Jay’s contributions to Duels of the Planeswalkers as it was a milestone for Wizards of the Coast in their journey to create a widely adopted digital game. And now that Magic Arena has been announced I hope to see some design elements from Duels. In this episode, I’m speaking with Brian Weissman, former Pro Player known for his creation of The Deck. The Deck focuses on an attrition plan to brutally control your opponent while swinging in with big creatures like Serra Angel, Juggernaut, and Juzam Djinn. Brian’s innovations in deck tech blossomed into what we now know as the “control” archetype and the concept we know as “card advantage”. For a while The Deck was unbeatable and evolved to combat new threats like Necropotence.

I’m speaking with Brian David-Marshall, official commentator and Pro Tour Historian of Magic: The Gathering. BDM started his career in comics. And eventually opened the famed game store Neutral Ground. BDM give us a rare glimpse into the early days of Magic, when it exploded in popularity back in 1994 and 1995. Mel talks about her creative process. New storylines are developed five to ten years ahead. So Mel can’t tell us what she worked on. But Mel did work on the single player campaign for Duels of the Planeswalkers.

Adrian wrote: Have a series of local tourneys where the prizes are modern staples rather than packs or money. This should keep the hyper-competitive away and attract the more casual crowd. Jordan wrote: Ask players for input on the events they'd like to see. Hold events at various times throughout the week--not everyone has a schedule that accommodates early afternoon/early evening events. In this episode, I’m talking to veteran pro player David Ochoa. Last spring, David appeared in his 100th Grand Prix.
David is one of the best players in the game, and play tests with Luis Scot Vargas, Paul Cheon, Josh Utter-Leyton, and Matt Nass. David writes for Channel Fireball and tweets about food, especially breads and toasts.
He also shares some tips on how to get better at Magic.
Remember what David said, to get better, find a group of players, they’ll help you get better. And for newer players, find a great place to play Magic. In this episode, I’m Brad Rutherford, local Seattle Judge and skilled pilot of the modern deck Abzan Company. Brad not only won a Star City Games 5k with it, he won the admiration of Magic players around the world with this fun and challenging deck.
Brad has played in over 1000 sanctioned games of Magic, and has logged over 400 with Abzan Company and a 70% win rate.
When Brad’s not crushing newbs like met at local events, he’s judging as an L2. Brad cares deeply about the community and contributes in every way he can. Whenever I’ve seen Brad judging at GP or a PPTQ, he’s giving it his all.

In this episode, I’m talking to James Lee, all around great guy, high level judge, and the person largely responsible for turning Friday Night Magic into a reality.
James worked for Wizards of the Coast back in the day and was tasked with turning FNM from an idea on paper in the boardroom to the global cornerstone of the Magic player’s experience that we see today.
When I think about FNM, I see the community coming together each week to: battle, try out new things, and make new friends. James also shares with us his thoughts about the evolution of Magic as a game, a sport, and an eSport.

In this episode, I’m talking to Jordan Aisaka, local Seattle player that’s known for his high level Legacy skills. CML’s new book, A Brief History of Magic Cards was fully funded through Kickstarter and chronicles the journey of Magic: The Gathering, Wizards of the Coast and his own experiences playing the game.
CML’s writing is interesting in that he takes a different perspective. He’s not afraid to get past the peachy rosy side of Magic coverage and dig through all the skeletons in the closet to find something different.
We dive into the possible future of Magic and where Hasbro is taking premier play.

I’m talking to Kenji Egashira, also known as Numot the Nummy. Kenji’s popular stream on Twitch and has earned him a lot of fans and in the process, Kenji has become one of the best limited players in the MTG community. Kenji has also done coverage for the Magic Online Championship Series and played in Community Super League and Streamer Showdown events hosted by Wizards. I’m talking to Nathan Holt, co-creator of Walking the Planes and the new Magic documentary Enter the Battlefield: Life on the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour. Nathan studied theater with a concentration in acting and went on to do plays, movies and even some stand up comedy. Early on Nathan and Shawn Kornhauser filmed a few videos that went viral in the community and quickly got picked up by Wizards of the Coast to create the series Walking the Planes. After following the Pro Tour for years, Nathan and Shaun produced, Enter the Battlefield: Life on the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour. This feature length documentary explores into the lives of Reid Duke, Owen Turtenwald, William Huey Jenson, Chris Pikula, Patrick Chapin, Melissa DeTora, and Shehar Shenhar. Nathan shares with us how he got started with acting, what he thinks are the fundamentals of comedy and how he likes to play Magic.
Damon Morris is the co-founder of Card Kingdom, Café Mox and Mox Boarding House. Damon cares deeply about creating a space where people can come together and play the games they enjoy. Card Kingdom is the retail and online store located in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle Washington. Attached to it is Café Mox, the French café inspired space where gamers can cozy up in a booth for hours. Mox Boarding House is the newest addition on the eastside in Bellevue Washington where the expansive tournament room and art deco themed café feature huge tables for board games and beers.
Kris Ferderer is a local Seattle Judge. He exemplifies the warm and welcoming nature of a Magic Judge. He’s knowledgeable about Legacy and does some commentating on Card Kingdom’s Twitch stream. Kris also streams all sorts of video games on Twitch, Superfluous Rhetoric. We talk about a wide range of things including funny judge calls, busted EDH combos and rolling up trash to create stars and planets.
Wedge from The Mana Source is a popular YouTuber in the Magic Community. He tells us about how he got started playing Magic and what it was like in the early days of his YouTube channel. Recently, Wedge raised an astounding 41 thousand dollars for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital. We’re very lucky to have someone like Wedge represent us in the Magic community!
