Well first Ryan's G-men were knocked out in Wild Card Weekend. Then my Texans got popped in Divisional round. But Jerry's Boys had to be the most shocking of what happened last week.
Now with three games left in the season we are down to Green Bay traveling to Atlanta for what might be an epic offensive showdown and for the upteenth time (or so it seems) we have Pittsburgh at New England.
As a great coach at West Ridge Middle School once said, "can't get along, get it on!"

Happy New Year! We are down to ONE final bowl game, but at least this is THE Championship
game. Everyone but the Nittany Lions are probably pretty good with this rematch of Alabama against Clemson.
And then we have the NFL Wild Card Weekend, or as history will remember it, the Battle of the Backup Quarterbacks. Matt, Connor and yes Brock. There's one hell of a game on the slate and its the last one.
Enjoy. And parond audio issues. New mic on one end and, well it had issues.

And then there was #2, #3 and #4 all falling last week in college football. And this week's #5 fell while recording this (YES). Madness that unfortunately Tech and UT can't take advantage of.

Nuggets of Wisdom – Week of 9/1240 ACRES OF CHAOSUsually when I’ve posted these “nuggets” I try to cover several different topics. But after the Horns performance Saturday against Okie State and the breaking news that Charlie Strong is out at the end of theseason, we will just stick to one.
Our loyal listeners and readers know that contrary to my usual anti-horns stance, I thought that Charlie Strong was the right hire. Mack had basically mailed it in at the end of his run and Charlie certainly had a long list of challenges facing him. He came in and made a huge impact on the players immediately and turning the culture from “country club” to a top tier professional college team. Yes, they are professional athletes, not student athletes. You could understand the struggle in year one, but he went 6-6. Problem was you saw somethings in that first year that you are seeing still. Losing close games, getting whipped by teams and looking lost. The next year, you get beat by Notre Dame, lose close calls on special teams mishaps with Cal and Okie State, get shutout by Iowa State, yet somehow they beat a much better CFP quality OU team badly.
Now this year, after reluctantly fixing his offensive staff, UT shows up and beats at the time a highly ranked Notre Dame team. Then UTEP (nuff said). And then the wheels come off. Going to Cal on the road without Goff, you give up 400 yards in the air and 50 points. Then again, Okie State! 3 Blocked extra points, which you can go a whole season and not see one, let alone three in a game. And the defense, with Charlie more involved looked like they didn’t have any idea where to be or how to defend the pass. Check out the highlights on ESPN and you will see the Cowboys catch balls surrounded by 3 or 4 defenders and beat them all.
WHEN TO FIRE A COACH?This is a hard question. LSU certainly missed the mark by not making the decision to cut ties with Miles last year. And rumors abound that they were concerned that he’d win “too much” and save his job again. With Charlie, he faced an uphill challenge with the Big Money Men from the get go as former AD Patterson tried to play the game his way and leave them out of the process. That left a long lasting bad relationship. The problem with college coaching now is that the BMM’s and Ads know that this is big business. Its not amateur sports. Those stadiums, scoreboards and suites don’t build themselves. So when you lose the support of the base (the donor base, not talk show radio base) you really have to look at moving on.The problem is when. LSU decided to cut Miles and let Ed Orgeron see what he can do with this as an extended tryout. But the problem with this is Orgeron has seen this before and he’s not a big enough name for LSU to be satisfied with. Secondly, how in the world can LSU recruit right now? Besides die-hard LSU kids, you have no idea what coach or system will be in place next year so you don’t know if you want to sign that one-sided commitment that you can’t get out of.UT has now firmly placed themselves in the same boat. The coaches now know they will not be here next year so they have to coach AND position themselves for another job. And 90 some odd 18-22 year olds now know that their coaches won’t be hear so discipline may go out the window and one more loss, probably to OU is going to just derail this thing.
UT should rip the bandaid off now and don’t play this game. You are looking at losing not only this season (done) but next season as well.

Tech returned Thursday with a pounding of KU. Can UT come off a bye and do the same against Okie State? Does LSU turn things around against Mizzou and can Notre Dame find a defense? We will tell you (and you should bet the opposite).

Nuggets of Wisdom – Week of 9/12After two weeks of college football and one week of NFL (minus two games on Monday night including the turd in the punch bowl 49ers vs Rams), there are some nuggets of wisdom we can scoop out.Systemic Failure in LubbockOne year, TCU drops so many points on Tech, they run out of fireworks. Another year Leonard ndyear (and Tech’s 8th Defensive Coordinator in 9 year) what do the Red Raiders do on a nationally televised game against Arizona State? Well by god, they let Kalen Ballage tie an NCAA record by scoring eight touchdowns and have 185 all-purpose yards. Fournette gets over 200 yds. and 4 TDs in a bowl game to end the year. And now this year, in essentially David Gibb’s 2
This is a program wide fiasco and it’s not getting better. Sure, this team will look great against SFA, ISU and KU, but outside of that, can you really expect to see any changes from last year’s 125thplaced defense? A top or even mediocre defense has not been seen in the Hub City since the late 90s and with this offense, you only need one or two stops per game. Good luck with that.40 Acres Looking DifferentNow if you’d like to see how an effective coaching staff and personnel can change the look of an entire team, I give you the 2016 University of Texas Longhorns. The Shane Buechele and Sterlin Gilbert combo is going to drive teams insane. Buechele has for two weeks no proven that he’s a legit D1 quarterback and can make the right reads and throws, something this team has been lacking for years.
Oh and they seem to have an alright (not ground breaking) defense. I guess you can have both.Pickens is PissedHe didn’t return my call, but you have to imagine that T. Boone is not a happy camper after what happened with the final play of the game against Central Michigan. How in today’s world with two separate ref crews (on field MAC team, Big12 replay team) and all the replays and technology can you misinterpret a call. Bottom line though, it happened and that final play by CMU is something we will see over and over again for years to come.Big12 Looking BadBesides Tech losing, you had TCU losing to Arkansas, Iowa State losing to Iowa and Kansas afterstorming the fields after defeating the mighty Rhode Island Whatevers, losing to Ohio. Not the best week. Could get worse next week as Tech now goes to see how many time La Tech can run the ball (hey opposing coaches, you want to win? Stop passing and just run on Tech), Pittsburgh after a big win against Penn State comes to Stillwater and you get the BIG showdown between Ohio State at OU. Gotta say right now, this doesn’t even feel like it will be close.
Dak AttackIn case you missed it, Tony Romo’s surgically repaired body was broken again. And well, Dak Prescott (or Zach according to Jerry Jones press conference) stepped in and showed the benefit of being a rookie QB with an amazing line, Dez and Witten plus Zeke behind him. Great game for him, only thing holding back his potential is the guy holding the clipboard that I swear says “Call Jerry and ask what play he’d like to run” or “Taking Risks is for Losers”. Cowboys won’t win until they reboot Garrett’s hard drive and maybe close the blinds in the back of the stadium so the sun doesn’t blind their own players. That NFL Concussion ProtocolI’ve come to the careful conclusion that the NFL’s new on field concussion protocol sucks. Anyone who watch the Panthers play against the Broncos saw the multiple headshots Cam Newton took in the game. Especially the last one inside of 1 minute with the Panthers driving to win the game. And that situation is why he stayed in the game. If a QB gets ear holed, falls to the ground and seems to be having a very sweet dream, they’ve got to pull him. And if the team won’t do it, the NFL on field doctors have to do it. But this was the NFL’s kick-off game, on NBC, with the Super Bowl teams and we can’t have a backup come in and say this league is dangerous. At least Cam has the excuse that he doesn’t remember the end of the game.
Big Balls in OaklandWhat a way to end a game in New Orleans with the Saints seemingly doing what the Saints do, th and inches, running the draw on 3 and 15, Jack Del Rio pushed all his chips in and after scoring a TD with the extra point to tie, decided to go for two. And then after seeing that the Saints were prepared to defend his call, stopped and still went for it and Carr completed the pass to Crabtree to go up two. No overtime, no chance for Drew Brees to do what he does. Just win baby!putting up offensive stats and giving up points (like Tech). But in a league that is defined by coaches whose risky decisions are punting on 4

Well many years ago, there was this amazing Tech centric blog that I wrote in conjunction with doing the Wisdom of the Wannabes podcast. Well one thing led to another and the writing that folks around the world loved disappeared (seriously Eastern European bots are great for inflating your sense of worth). After a slight kick in the pants from a mentor of mine, I’ve decided to wade back into writing because you all deserve this. NOTE: While I hope to write every week, especially during football season, I make no promises. So just like the blog, like our Facebook page and that way you get all the updates. Now… let’s get to it.2016 OlympicsUSA! USA! USA! Good lord, with Russia losing 66% of their athletes for a doping program that even Lance would blush at, there is literally no competition. As of writing this USA is at 82 total medals, 28 golds. Nobody else is even close. Go team.
Phelps – 28 total medals, 23 Gold medals. The man is half fish. If he was a country, he’d be in the Top 40 for all time medals. By himself. It was amazing to watch him swim and it’s a shame he may truly be retired, however he’s kicking some much ass now that retirement has to weigh on him somewhat. Guess he can retire for a few years, skipping that drug testing thing, and come back.Katie Ledecky – Yet another fish human hybrid. Her run this year and the little bit of trash talk to theRussian swimmer was fantastic.
Women’s Gymnastics Team – Who knew that the missus knew the scoring system of gymnastics? I’ve watched at least three Summer Olympics games and never knew this fact. These girls were so damn good, the last competitor could have done the robot with a backspin to Electric Boogaloo and we’d have still won gold.Bolt – He finished his sprint faster than I can type this.RIO – I think it’s time that we just pick 4 or 5 major cities and make them permanentl locations and quit this obvious rigging and bribery industry that the IOC has built. Athens… bankrupted the country. Sochi… led to an invasion of neighbor country. Rio – I’m leaning towards bankruptcy, we had green water due to someone pouring hydrogen peroxide in the water and we’ve had muggings, robberies and rapes. Welcome to the games. NFL Preseason
By the end of every preseason, every NFL fan is sick of watching meaningless games. However, there were plenty of pissed of fans when they learned that some yahoo who thought the best way to dry a turf field is with a dryer. Apparently he’s never seen a replay of any game played on turf, where you get to see the clouds of rubber puff up from beneath. Needless to say, rubber and heat don’t mix to well and the NFL’s grand kickoff was cancelled and the Colts and Packers went home. NFL Hall of Fame Game, its FANtastic .Now I tried to watch a lot of these games but I’m not going to try and pretend that anything that was seen in Week1 will translate to the rest of the Preseason, let alone the actual season. Here’s some randoms:Bears – I think Cutler’s days are numbered (copy and paste every year until he’s gone). With a new O-coordinator you knew there would be struggles but getting blanked 22-0 and gaining a whopping 130 yards of offense, probably not what the coaches were looking for.
Eagles – So you got Bradford and gave him a ton of money, then signed Daniels for a good chunk of change, then traded your 2017 draft to move up to get Wentz? Don’t get that as you pissed of your supposed starter and now you broke your shiny #2 pick’s rib (How much for one rib?)Titans – Based on this one game, look for the Titans to run the rock, a lot! Out of 56 plays, 33 were runs by Henry or Murray. If Mariota can throw, they should be able to play action the hell out of any team because they will load the box to stop these two.Niners – After the dumpster fire that the Eagles turned into, one can forget that Chip Kelly’s offense is a blast to watch at the NFL level. And one may forget that this team runs. The Texans (minus Watt) certainly did a few times. They aren’t going to win the NFC West, but they will damn sure gas the defenses they face in September. Their line’s legs will be dead by November just like Kaepernick’s MVP career.Rams – Hey we sold 90,000 seats to a preseason game and won! Hey, when this team is 3-7 there will be tarps all over this stadium hiding the empty seats. And remind me why the GM and Jeff (7-9) Fisher are getting extensions before the season? Sure he looks like Magnum PI’s younger cousin butyou gotta have a winner in LA.
Cowboys – Wow. I still have the same strategy that Jerry has when it comes to analyzing this team, literally none. However, Jerry or Stephen may have made a heck of a pick with Dak Prescott. Playing with the 1s, he certainly looked great. And even after his brain fart of delay of game, then sack, he still made the right play to finish the half and setup a Baily field goal. Just think, when (not if) Romo goes down this year, there may be someone behind him who can play. He’s a rookie thought so not getting too excited.Drug Suspensions – I think almost ¾ of the 32 teams now have one if not more players suspended for the first 4, 8 or TEN games. And Bills just got popped while writing this. Good lord.Ok that’s it for this first Nugget. Next week will still be NFL heavy, but there’s always a chance some SEC coach will do something, Briles will get indicted or the Big12 will add 24 teams.
Wreck ‘em.
