For this episode I got to interview the wonderful Amelia Hruby, someone who is inspiring me immensely as a podcaster and social media leaver. Her work is such a balm for anyone who feels overwhelmed with online marketing and wants to find a gentler, more sustainable way. Here is some of what we talked about:

  • Choosing the right business model and growing on your own terms
  • Leaving social media without loosing all your clients
  • Navigating change and tough decisions
  • Meeting the dawn of AI with integrity and curiosity

Amelia Hruby is a writer, educator and podcaster with a PhD in philosophy. She is the founder of Softer Sounds, a feminist podcast studio for entrepreneurs and creatives. And she’s the host of Off the Grid, a podcast about leaving social media without losing all your clients.

In this episode I walk you through some useful questions to consider if you're wondering how much you should spend on your business website (likely your second most important business asset!). Of course the answer depends on what stage your business is in, so there really is no one size fits all answer. I am also exploring wether it's okay to DIY, what other website costs you might need to budget for and why your conversion rate matters so much.

In this episode I'm talking about four different ways I have often seen, in my own and other people's businesses, that too many offerings can actually be harmful to your success (of your own understanding!). In this episode I am sharing some observations about confidence, consistency and creative freedom I've made in the last few years. In this episode I am wondering out loud what advances in technology might mean for us - for the way we share and create and for the way we work and collaborate with each other. I know there is a lot of anxiety and uncertainty in the air around how AI might impact creatives, so if you want to make some space to explore your own thoughts I really hope this episode will offer you some space to do just that.

I don't think it's all doom & gloom at all, but I think it's important that we are active agents who shape tech culture rather than passive consumers who just hand over all their data to big tech.

This episode was an absolute joy to record - I spoke to the wonderful Anna of Studio Gently, who recently took my picture. • Building a business that supports your mental health

  • Preparing for a photoshoot

Anna is an Edinburgh-based brand photographer working with creative kin across the UK. She loves helping even the shyest clients feel comfortable on camera, and when she's not shooting, you'll probably find her cosied up under a blanket with a fave magazine.

Hey everyone,

I'm so happy to get a chance to send an interview your way, something I know I haven't done in a while. I really loved talking to Victoria Jane and our conversation reminded me of the importance of getting to know yourself in your work. We wear a lot of different hats and make hundreds of big and small decisions and I think that tools such as human design can help us think with more clarity about our strength and needs. Here is some of what we talked about:

  • Truly getting to know ourselves
  • Trusting organic cycles of creation
  • Utilising human design to better understand our strength and challenges
  • Understanding the patterns in our energy, creativity and need for rest
  • Developing self-trust to meet imposter syndrome

Victoria is a human design coach whose mission is to guide growth-oriented humans to live with less hustle and more flow. After a decade in Silicon Valley achieving everything she thought she was supposed to, Victoria was earthquaked into the harsh reality: she was burnt out and in danger of doing serious damage to her health. As she searched for how to heal not just her body, but her spirit, she discovered her design. Today, she is passionate about sharing Human Design so you can confidently live your truth.

Hey everyone,

I am sorry it's been a little while since I've sent another episode your way. This is a really wonderful interview to return with - I spoke to Ellie McBride, someone who is as passionate about design and systems as I am. Here is some of what we covered:

  • Getting clear on your ideal business set up
  • Building systems that support your work, wellbeing and visions
  • The future of web design and bringing humanity back into design
  • Simplifying things for better everyday flow

I’m Ellie McBride, an American expat living in Northern Ireland since 2017. After moving across the world to be with my Northern Irish husband, I struggled to find the flexibility to spend much time back at my other home in Oregon to see my friends and family. In this quest for flexibility, I realized building an online business from the ground up is the way to have everything I’ve ever wanted in life.

I started out as a freelancer back in 2018. As a tech Virtual Assistant, I worked online with business owners in areas like social media planning, creating slick systems and automations, and perfecting their email marketing systems. However, I soon realized many of my clients struggled with the same: Having a beautiful and highly functional website to communicate with their community and open up their time for the tasks that truly needed their attention. Hey friends,

I hope you're not too busy as we are heading towards the solstice and that you are finding some time to rest and reflect on the year. I'm wrapping things up over here and apart from an intuitive business planning workshop I am offering on the 27th I'm getting ready to do absolutely nothing for a few weeks. Before I snuggle down I am excited to share a lovely conversation with Lian Angelino with you, here is some of what we talked about:

  • Getting to know yourself to create a business that meets your needs
  • Valuing our uniques and resisting stories of failure and weakness
  • Receiving support around our most important choices
  • Not caring about what it means to be "professional"

Lian Angelino is a career coach for women who feel unfulfilled in their careers. She helps them to crave clarity on their next steps, so that they can build a career they love.

She started her career coaching business with a mission to help women to become experts on themselves so they can thrive in both their personal and professional lives. Her mission stems from her own frustration about the fact that our educational system delivers subject matter experts on a variety of topics, ranging from world war 2 to how plants grow, but often overlooks the importance of becoming subject matter experts about ourselves: who we are, what we value and knowing our strengths, and what lights us up.

Besides coaching, she loves to philosophize and write about this rollercoaster experience we all go through called being human as well as how to navigate the bumpy rides that our career journey can be some times.

Hey friends,

in this episode I am sharing about conversion rates - what they are, why they matter and how we might rethink them in a way that isn't extractive or manipulative. Thinking about conversion rates can really help you find the right business model, create a sustainable marketing plan and share/market/pollinate in a way that doesn't feel icky.

I hope this episode is helpful and I'd love to hear what you think! Also, please leave a review if you have a second? Thank you so much!

Also, here is the invite to upcoming free workshops I mentioned: https://pinkwellstudio.com/free/

Hey everyone,

welcome to November! I don't know how this happened, but we are nearing the end of the year. All I want is to listen to wonderful conversations like this one with Laura Holway. I want to hear stories of resilience and adaptation from other creative businesses and celebrate all of us for being brave and smart and bold. If you feel the same, this is for you. Here is some of what we talked about:

  • Moving through discomfort and uncertainty while building a small business
  • Working with limitations and embracing imperfection
  • Our bodies as sources of business-wisdom
  • Finding our own way with marketing and letting go of unconscious stories of what it should look like

Laura Holway is a coach, teacher, and dance artist dedicated to helping creative humans grow nourishing businesses and satisfying lives. Her approach integrates reflection and embodiment practices, very human marketing, and experimentation. Laura is excited about karaoke, cooking, gardening metaphors, and parenting her curious 6-year-old.

Hey everyone,

thank you for your patience with me! I'm happy to be back and bring you a wonderful conversation with Sarah Santacroce all about re-humanising the way we do business. It's been great to hear Sarah's story, brainstorm ideas for doing things differently and affirm what does and doesn't actually feel good when it comes to marketing. Here is some of what we talked about:

  • Finding better ways to share our work without compromising our values or being a martyr
  • Inflated prices and why we don't need "gurus"
  • Re-humanising our business practices
  • Finding the right online spaces that suit our businesses and ourselves

Sarah Santacroce is changing the current marketing paradigm. 12 years of running a successful LinkedIn Consulting business inspired a yearning in Sarah to create a global movement that encourages people to bring more empathy and kindness to business & marketing. As a ‘Hippie turned Business Coach’, Sarah hosts the Gentle Business Revolution podcast and works with heart-centered entrepreneurs to question their assumptions when it comes to marketing & give them permission to market their business their way, the gentle way! Thought of as an influencer in her field, Sarah is a frequent speaker at conferences and has been featured on many podcasts and radio shows. Some of the most prestigious universities and Business Schools in the world, including Rutgers University New Jersey, HEC Paris, IMD and EPFL Lausanne hire Sarah to train their students for LinkedIn best practices.

Sarah shares a fresh perspective and doesn’t shy away from calling things out that no longer work for many of us when it comes to the current marketing model. Her clients sometimes refer to her as ‘the female Seth Godin’. When she’s not working, she loves adventure & traveling, yoga & nature walks or hanging out with her family.

Hey everyone,

  • The kinds of experiences people have in the EBC and what our values are
  • What I teach & share in the space

If you've been thinking about joining us I hope this episode will give you all the information you need to decide. If you have any more questions feel free to reach out to me and I'll get back to you asap!

The EBC includes a whole year of membership, a six module course, monthly group support sessions and themed workshops, two co-working spaces a month, meet & greets, two virtual weekend retreats per year and a loving and active community on Mighty Networks. Hey friends,

I’ve been living without social media and a smartphone for a while now and it’s something that does seem to raise questions for people. Recently I dug my old iPhone back out because I wanted to share pictures of my garden and my cast post-surgery and it made me pause to see how it felt and if I had missed it. This episode isn’t trying to convince anyone to ditch their phones or apps or whatever it is that makes them happy, especially right now. I just wanted to check in with myself, gather some reflections and then share them with you in case you’re looking for that kind of food for thought right now.

Enjoy!

Hi everyone,

I'm sending a really lovely interview your way today! It's always nice to listen to fellow small business owners and feel less alone with the questions and challenges the pandemic has brought up for us. Hannah was a wonderful guest and shared generously about how she came to embody a business model and a way of sharing that works for her and her aunt, with whom she runs A Handpicked Life. Here is some of what we talked about:

  • Starting a new business in lockdown
  • Seeing our dreams through and listening to our bodies
  • The value of community and accountability
  • Getting to know yourself as you build your business

Hannah is an entrepreneur and freelance content creator. She is the co-founder of A Handpicked Life, a life and wellbeing coaching membership framework supporting people in staying on track to creating and living a life they love. Guiding and empowering people to find personal freedom and to create an authentic life that has meaning and purpose to them! Hi everyone!

Summer is upon us - often a time out of time spent in another pace & dream state. I reallyyy hope you get to just rest, read and reflect lots and I love talking about tools for authentic motivation (as opposed to fear driven frantic doing).

This episode is full of ideas for creating supportive structure in your business, which I hope will help you feel motivated and in touch with the bigger picture and the reason you started your business in the first place. We've all been through a lot this past year and in many cases our businesses and ideas for the future have changed dramatically. I believe that in amongst all this turmoil it's more important than ever to have a beautiful container for your work, one that sets you up for success in your own unique way.

Hey everyone,

I'm just coming out of a class on creating evergreen classes in the Embodied Business Community and wanted to expand on a really great question that came up - what kinds of topics can actually work as evergreen classes?

I know for myself that sometimes I really need the accountability and the witnessing of a live group, but in some cases being able to take a class in my own time, with privacy and some guidance is a better and more economical option. I don't have a black and white answer for you on what works, I think it really depends on the subject and the person who wants to explore something new, but I am sharing some useful ideas, questions and experiences in this episode to hopefully help you get a clearer picture on what kinds of things you might want to teach and how.

Enjoy!

Hey loves,

can you believe it is May now? I'm being reminded to follow my own rhythms and seasons every day at the moment!

Part of that is making space for contractions and grief when it's needed, which can sometimes include asking if it's time to give up on a business or an idea. Someone asked how we know when it's time today and I loved that questions so much that I recorded a whole episode about it.

This is, I hope, a pep-talk to un-shame the act of letting go when something doesn't feel right anymore while also building resilience to keep going when it's just a rough patch on the way to softer times.

I hope it helps!

Love,

Yarrow

    • What works and what doesn't in small business marketing
    • Making our businesses more feminist
    • DIY media as a creative future
    • How the pandemic has changed Amelia's work

I really loved talking to Amelia - there were lots of giggles and a few paws involved as well. This was the kind of conversation that left me feeling energised, hopeful and in love with running a small business. I hope you'll feel the same!

Hey everyone,

I've felt like recording some thoughts on why our undivided attention matters so much in building a small business. I've had more time to think than I've had for a while in March and I realised that I really want to give myself more spaciousness in my work. Not only because it feels nice, but also because it simply is a more effective way of being in the world. Here is what I talked about:

  • How I decluttered my home, digital space and business
  • Where I see the value in giving undivided attention to some things and not to others
  • Where I am at after leaving social media for good three months ago
  • What I think we need in order to be able to learn, create and adapt now and in the future

Hey everyone,

I've had some time to think about my work as a web designer this month, about my approach, my portfolio and about how things have changed over the years. Taking stock was wonderful and it has shown me how I still really love working with people at the beginning of their business journey. If that's you and you are thinking about creating your own website then this episode is hopefully going to be a useful stepping stone. Here is what I talked about:

  • The key questions I ask all my clients before drafting some ideas for them
  • How I choose the right software for each project
  • What I find helpful for structuring a new site and writing copy
  • What kind of research might help you gather ideas

I mentioned my new web design course, which you can take in your own time or do together with me and a group of people in May, learn more here: https://yarrowdigital.com/web-design-adventure-course/

Hey friend,

are you trying to create something that everyone will love? Are you hesitating to make and launch your thing because it might not be perfect? Then I really hope this episode is the kick in the butt you need. Here is what I've shared about:

  • What I found out when I looked through six years of blog posts and podcast episodes
  • Why it took me two years to update my web design course
  • Why it's so important that we don't let perfectionism hold us back
  • How to let go of self-consciousness
  • Some hard questions we can ask ourselves to stop people pleasing right now

Gosh, I almost feel a weight of my shoulders after having said these things out loud. I'm okay! You're okay! We can do our things and some people will love it while some don't and that's okay.

I have talked about this before, but between the pandemic and my accident I have really wanted to revisit the subject of resilience for small business and share some ideas. Here is what I talk about in this episode:

-A key question I think we should all ask ourselves to identify where we need more resilience -What it can look like to make space for restructuring and evolution in your work -Some thoughts on insurance and risk mitigation -Working in cycles, making space for the unexpected and staying in touch with our numbers -Why building a list and having different income streams is so important

Hey friends,

I am coming your way with a little solo episode about shifting the way we relate to numbers in our businesses.

This time of the year is usually so much about planning - income goals for next year, reflections on this year, thinking about where we're at and if it's "good enough". For some of us this is right, but I wanted to share some reflections around how we might shift our relationship to numbers and goals in a way that feels good. Amongst other things I talked about:

Lowering the bar way down for the sake of our wellbeing A trick I use when I think I don't get "enough" likes The questions I ask myself to come to clarity with my financial numbers How I track my time Some thoughts around "valuable investments" in my business

Hey everyone,

we got to episode 50, woo! Thank you so much for all your support and cheering on. I really fucking love this project and I could not be happier to share my interview with the wonderful Gina Wisotzky to mark the occasion. Listening back just now my heart is so full - there was so much inspiration, acceptance and truth in what Gina shared. Here is some of what we talked about:

  • Navigating the pandemic with grit and clarity
  • Being present with ourselves in our businesses and really listening to - what is needed
  • Boldly changing directions when the time is right
  • Making space for intuition in our decision making processes
  • DIY media and walking away from social media

I'm so happy to know Gina and to know I am not alone in working all these strange, difficult and exciting things out.

Hey friends,

I am sharing this solo episode on both my podcasts - Daydreaming Wolves and the DIY Small Business podcast because it feels relevant to both projects. I came across the expression voluntary simplicity this week and it's been intensely on my ever since. While I never resonated with "voluntary poverty" there is so much freedom and pleasure in keeping things simple.

So in this episode I am exploring how I am valuing simplicity in my life - in the home I bought, the ways in which I allow my business to stagnate, in how I try to get better at letting things be what they are and be led by my values rather than dominant narratives. I am asking what it can look life to be right sized in the space we take up, to find our own kind of success and am also giving a little update on smartphone free life, in case you're interested.

Let me know what you think!

Hey friends,

it's been a little while, sorry about that! Today I recorded a solo episode on the idea that there isn't a quick fix or blue print that we just have to discover. I feel truly that it's really human to hope for someone or something to come save us and our businesses this year, but I'm also certain that it's much more beautiful and hopeful to do the hard work of developing creative resilience and embodied solidarity.

If you are curious about what this could look like, please give my episode a listen and let me know what you think

What can resilience look like for you right now? What services, skills and products can you offer online? What do the people you serve need right now? How has that changed? How are other people in your industry adapting? How do you want to trade with people? What are your core values in business? What kind of goals would feel good?

Hey everyone,

I am back from my little break and excited to bring you more conversations about small business magic in times of crisis. In this episode I talked to the wonderful Kate Litterer about breaking free from productivity culture, which felt both liberating and fun. If you're feeling feelings about good-enoughness, setting your own pace and being a human in business I hope you'll get lots out of this too! Here is some of what we talked about:

  • Living with chronic pain & finding softness around limitations
  • Untangling our sense of self from productivity and work
  • Harmful expectations and scarcity in academia
  • Valuing invisible labour
  • Our journey with pricing & accessibility
  • Drawing healthy boundaries around our work

Kate Litterer is a productivity researcher and coach who guides her clients to reimagine productivity and achieve personal success on their own terms. She specializes in intentionality, habit formation, mindfulness, and slow living...in other words, slowductivity. Kate runs the blog "The Tending Year" and writes a twice-a-month newsletter called "The Tending Letter," both of which aim to make productivity and personal development more accessible and applicable. She is also a queer history buff, and is currently completing her doctoral degree in Rhetoric, focusing on the rhetorical contributions of lesbian author and musician Lisa Ben.

Eli Trier lives in the wonderful city of Copenhagen, Denmark and is a community builder for Quiet Revolutionaries. Hey friends,

I am sending sleepy love from my bed to yours, alongside a conversation with Wendy May, which felt hopeful and gentle to listen back to just now. I really love how Wendy has managed to articulate her hope for change and big shifts without spiritually bypassing the real pin we're in right now (we recorded this a bit over a month ago, so the world was still feeling a bit different, but still!). Here is some of what we talked about:

  • What it means to find regenerative purpose
  • Navigating the uncertainty of transition
  • Unlearning patterns of competition and embracing a death process
  • Finding meaning beyond branding
  • Working with the Enneagram

Wendy May is a purpose guide, conscious-business coach, Enneagram teacher and human-experience designer. She started on her purpose path in 2015 after leaving a 15-year career in corporate leadership and organizational consulting. Wendy is the founder of a purpose-business that uses biodegradable glitter as a vehicle for ecological education. She recently published her first book, introducing a new paradigm of purpose work: Regenerative Purpose: The Dynamic Nature of the Way We Choose Work. Through her writing, speaking, private coaching, and group retreats, Wendy supports others in soul purpose alignment so that we can create a world of work that works for everyone.

Hey friends,

sending some sparkles from my heart to yours.

This episode is me answering a few questions about the Embodied Business Community and announcing that it's now available for $24/month to reflect the times we're in.

I know spending money is scary right now and I also know that lots of people have amazing ideas and would love to work from home, so this felt like the right choice.

Have a listen and let me know if you have any more questions!

Hey friends,

thank you so much for connecting with me in these strange times, it feels nice to receive your questions and record episodes in response. Not a substitute for human contact, but a comfort nonetheless!

A question I received three whole times this week is where to begin when you are starting out, so I wanted to share some tips. I also want to say that I don't think you are required to "use" this downtime to optimise your self/life/work in any way. I spent a lot of time napping, eating and having little cries and then sometimes I have moments where forward movement and action feels better. It's all good!

Anyway, tune in if you'd like to explore ways of mapping out your needs, talents and passions to come up with your first products or services.

Sending love,

Yarrow

Hey everyone,

I know things are really hard and uncertain for many of us right now and I wanted to say that I am not podcasting because it's business as usual, but because I am really committed to staying in dialogue and providing things that I hope are useful to you at this time. Today I am sending a really cool conversation with Kate Strathmann of Wanderwell Consulting your way - we talked about so many things that I believe are really important when it comes to building resilient businesses grounded in our politics and values. Here are some of the topics we touched on:

Creating a solid financial foundation for small businesses Being okay with not being employable Being led by our values and meeting business partners with empathy Building resilient local networks

An expert in translating big, creative, passionate ideas into sustainable reality, Kate honed fierce negotiation skills over years living in India; learned the true meaning of the buzzword “sustainable” while organic farming in Minnesota; and has developed an intuitive, flexible approach to her work with over twenty years of yoga study practice. She now lends her breadth of experience to shepherding ideas from napkin sketches to robust balance sheets and emboldening owners to exceed their own expectations while challenging the status quo.

As the founder and director of Wanderwell, Kate leads a team in providing a unique combination of grounded financial practices and human-centered strategy and business design to a motley crew of visionary, creative small businesses.

Known for combining irreverence and humor with jedi-like listening skills, Kate lends these skills to organizational development, community-minded strategy, and thinking and writing on new economies, anti-capitalist business practices, and reminding us all to find more ease in our businesses.

I am celebrating five years in business today! "I trust myself to make this work" is still my favorite business affirmation and I am excited for the next five years. Working for myself has given me a lot of freedom, room for creativity, community, rest, inspiration and joy. Obviously it's also given me a lot of headaches and challenges, but at the end of the day I have never regretted it. I've recorded an episode sharing my biggest lessons - I talked about unlearning competition, having good boundaries, rethinking success, making time to work ON your business and listening to your body as a wise mentor. Enjoy! Thanks for supporting my work, being here, listening and sharing and for making all this possible. Love you, Yarrow

Hey everyone,

happy new year! I am really excited to start as I mean to go on and bring you the first interview of 2020 with another wonderful, inspiring and kind business owner - RC Woodmass! It's been really great to get to know them and their work and to be involved in the digital agency they have created. Here is what we talked about:

  • The story of how their digital agency Queerit came to be
  • Running a feminist, anti capitalist business
  • Collaborating in a way that is sustainable and fun
  • Moving away from scarcity and creating new kinds of abundance
  • Having a clear message and standing for what we believe in

RC Woodmass (they/them), a trained classical soprano, is a non-binary lesbian now working in tech. For the last three years they have immersed themself in the tech sector, co-leading the Montreal chapter of Lesbians Who Tech (& Allies) to be one of the most active chapters in their global network. They most recently worked as a product designer, applying their talents in speaking, writing, and design as a founding employee of diversity and inclusion startup Crescendo. They are the founder of Queerit, a social good design agency by and for queers (and those who love us). They have been called a “rising star in the queer/feminist movement” and work tirelessly for the visibility of queer and trans folks in the tech sector, as well as in society at large. They love cycling, writing poetry, gardening, and their cat, Didi.

Hey friends,

happy new moon! I am delighted to bring you a really cool, delightful and insightful conversation with Ash Reed and Libby Smith about astrology for business, creative flow and team organisational development. It's been such a great chat with many, many ahas and much nodding along for me. I hope you'll love listening as much as I did! Here is what we talked about:

  • Utilising astrology for more magic in all aspects of our lives
  • How the stars can support us in making more intentional, successful business decisions and build aligned teams
  • How the moon phase we're born into might affect us
  • Living with the moon as an accessible gateway to more cyclical living and working

Ash Reed

After a decade of gardening by the moon, astrology shouted at me to use this tool for so much more. A knack with people and hearing them authentically, I have found the science of astrology to be a gateway to offer daily guidance & wisdom. We can honor the universe and use this tool or continue life with blinders on. It is our choice to make.

Libby Smith

With 5 planets in air signs and a stellium in the 10th house of career and calling, Libby spends a lot of time thinking about how to make our work lives better. Throughout the course of her professional and spiritual life, she's developed skills in three distinct traditions and practices. She's a an evaluator, facilitator, and educator working at a university in Wisconsin and with her . She takes a soul-aligned approach to working with a wide range of people and organizations seeking transformative change.

Hey everyone,

thank you so much for joining me for another episode - this time I spoke to Caroline Wood about what it's like to build a business as an introvert. I think there can be a lot of pressure to do things a certain way and it's easy to feel pressured into sharing beyond what we're comfortable with. I always love talking to other small business owners who do things differently, so I hope you find this conversation interesting too. Here is what we talked about:

  • Managing our introvert energy to build our businesses
  • Create marketing plans that don't require us to be "out there" all the time
  • Coming to a sustainable pricing model
  • Overcoming self-doubt in our businesses
  • Knowing our needs and having good boundaries

Caroline Wood is an introvert who supports other introverts to build successful businesses that honour their introversion. She does this through helping them put in place great systems and set prices to thrive. Caroline is a corporate escapee having spent 20 years working as a chartered accountant working for large businesses and not for profits. She has wound her way around world working in Australia (her home country), the UK, Namibia and Laos.

Hey everyone,

thanks for tuning into another episode! As you might know I am really interested in grief and death work and so was absolutely thrilled to speak to Lucy Taylor for this episode. It was really enriching to talk through some of our ideas and observations in the small online business and coaching world and I would love to hear what you think after listening! Here is some of what we talked about:

  • How we need to let old ways of doing things die
  • The showreel culture of instagram and how we might go beyond it
  • Allowing our whole selves to show up
  • Staying emotionally open and engaged in times of decay and death
  • Things we feel are missing from the coaching world

As a Death Awareness Coach, Lucy facilitates meaningful experiences for individuals and entrepreneurs to engage their relationship with death and loss as a path to wholeness and acceptance. Within her personal coaching, she supports people who are transitioning through a space of what ‘was’, towards what is yet to emerge. Through her business mentoring program Human On Purpose, Lucy guides coaches and purpose-driven entrepreneurs to prioritise truth and humanness as they create and communicate their business.

excitement is happening over here as I have another interview episode to share - just love telling more stories and hearing other small business owners talk about how they do things, make decisions and stay true to their values! This time I spoke to the wonderful Jo Casey who runs the meaningful business podcast. Here is what we talked about:

  • What our businesses would be as plants and animals
  • All the things about being a small business owner that feel exciting, challenging and wild

As you might have seen/heard I left social media, which is kind of a wild decision for a small business owner to make. The pressure to put shiny, bite sized content out there regularly to beat the algorithm is huge, but I am ready to see what else is out there!

In this solo episode I am sharing the reasons for my decision, what I have observed over the years, what I am planning to grow my business instead of being on social media and what it all feels like.

I would love to hear what you think - are you enjoying your social media life? How much time are you spending on your phone? What would you miss if you left?

Let me know in the comments over at YarrowDigital.com

Hey appreciated listeners,

l am sorry it's been a little while since you received the last episode. I moved houses and countries, left social media, wrote a zine and enjoyed summer. Thanks for your patience!

Now that I am all set and unpacked I am really excited to started sharing more episodes since one of my main aims with leaving social media was to be able to create more long form media and have more in-depth conversations.

This one with Eli Trier stayed with me for a long time and gave me a whole bunch of ideas that I have already implemented. I am honestly so grateful I met Eli and got this little glimpse behind the scenes of how she does things. It's magic! Here is what we talked about:

  • How to reach out to others as an introvert
  • Overcoming social anxiety and creating working conditions that truly work for us in a sustainable, regenerative way
  • The magic of creating community projects that go much deeper than your average telesummit or weekend gathering
  • Why bringing people together around a shared passion is so much more powerful than shouting random stuff from the rooftops
  • Redefining our ideas of success and "adulthood"
  • Rehumanising business relationships and investing in transparency, kindness and connection

Hey folks,

I think you'll love this episode if you feel puzzled by branding and unsure where to start - maybe you're worried it's all manipulative and restrictive or that creating a cohesive brand has to be pretty expensive and complex. I really love how Lilly Garcia manages to demystify the whole process so that playing with colours, fonts and graphics can actually be fun.

Here is what we talked about:

  • What flexible branding is and how it can be super helpful for small business owners
  • Reclaiming branding and graphic design from capitalism and remembering that creative expression has always been a human need
  • How to let go of perfectionism, keep it simple and let your branding grow with you
  • The funny story of a cheap shoe brand hiring "influencers" and rebranding completely to then charge hundreds of dollars as a holiday PR stunt

Lilly Garcia is a designer of Flexible Brands, which means she helps radical souls who are ready to show up as their full selves in business create visuals that allow them the room to do just that. She believes that branding should mold itself around you, not the other way around, and that we can dismantle systems of oppression by simply showing up fully.

Hey everyone,

I am so beyond excited to bring you my first interview for the DIY Small Business podcast with the wonderful Elinor Predota! Elinor was also on the Daydreaming Wolves podcast and has such beautiful insights to share about what it means to build businesses that are aligned with our values. Here is what we talked about:

  • Building a small business against and beyond capitalism
  • Elinor's background of working in cooperatives
  • The emotional labour involved in re-thinking our relationship to power and leadership
  • Ways of building sustainable and regenerative communities and how that is related to how we trade with each other
  • Personal freedom and collective liberation
  • Cycles and transformations in business instead of constant growth

Elinor supports people who long to make action for social justice an everyday part of their life and work, but who feel stuck, confused, or overwhelmed, to build their inner resources of resilience, awareness of self, society and environment, and confidence.

Elinor offers one to one, group and DIY programmes which are grounded in a long and wide-ranging background in activism, community development, spiritual counselling, ritual work, storytelling, and facilitation of learning. Elinor’s work is rooted in the magic of creativity, of relating across difference, and of becoming alive to all that is present, within and without us, here and now.

Hey friends,

this is the last episode for 2018 - thank you so so much for all your support so far! Next year in addition to these solo episodes I'll be interviewing wonderful small business owners who are doing things differently and I can't wait to share those conversations with you!

This week I am talking about business planning for 2019 after running a really cool online workshop on this last week. Tune in to hear about:

  • What my year in business was like and what I learned
  • How I've managed to built community and run more than 20 free live workshops
  • What an ICA is and why it's worth defining one for 2019
  • How you can make sure to set goals that go beyond numbers, that feel good and that are sustainable
  • Why journaling for business feels so good and important to me

And here are some of the journaling prompts I spoke about:

  • Who are you serving?
  • What is your ICA struggling with?
  • What is accessible to them?
  • Where are they hanging out?
  • What products or services are you most excited about creating?
  • What makes you hold back or feel jealous?
  • What motivates you the most?
  • What does your body need?
  • How are you feeling about your prices and the accessibility of your work?
  • How much do you need in order to feel safe?
  • What would you like to reinvest into your business?

Hey business dreamers,

it's already Monday and time for another episode! This week I spoke about something that is super close to my heart - helping people build a solid newsletter list! Tune in to hear about:

  • Why I think this is so important for your independence as a business owner
  • My thoughts about social media vs. newsletters
  • How to choose the right newsletter provider
  • Making sure you shout about it from the roof tops without being annoying
  • Free things you can offer as an incentive to sign up
  • Other newsletter building strategies I love

:: About me and the DIY Small Business podcast ::

I am a web designer, small business mentor and tech fairy who helps people start and run small businesses that are fun to work in and make enough money for things that matter.

The DIY Business Podcast is supporting people in creating regenerative, sustainable and feminist businesses that redefine success and center community through interviews with like minded folk, how to guides and exploratory shares.

I am not on social media anymore because I want to focus on creating indy media like my podcasts, compare myself less and spent little time on my phone. This means I have more energy to nurture my communities and make cool things for you!

Welcome back! I am super happy to bring you another DIY Business Magic solo episode about generosity and boundaries in business. In this one I am sharing:

  • How I stopped saying yes to everything and kept my work accessible at the same time
  • Why I believe sharing your skills is totally safe and totally beautiful
  • How I manage to offer free content year round rather than just when I have something to sell
  • How we can rethink funnels
  • How I create win-win situations that don't deplete me
  • What boundaries I draw around my work and energy

I hope this is useful to you! I want to say that this is definitely not the only way to do things and also that I hope you don't feel any pressure to make free stuff available too. We're all in different spaces and my intention is just to share what works for me.

Here is the sign up for the Business Planning for 2019 workshop I mentioned:

Happy Monday!

I am sending a new episode on online marketing and social media for introverts your way today, which is based on a free workshop I recently ran. I know so many of us feel resistance around this and imposter syndrome is sadly totally normal, so I wanted to share my best tips and tools. Listen if you want to learn:

  • How to indentity where exactly your resistance around sharing your work is coming from
  • How you can use free tools and automations to make the process easier
  • How you can draw clear boundaries around your time and privacy
  • How you can find the right spaces and communities for your message
  • How a clear and consistent visual language can help you feel more confident online
  • How you can set realistic and authentic goals for your business

Hey friends,

it's Monday and I'd like to send another mini business lesson your way as we start the week. This one is all about branding - about what is actually is, what it can mean for you and about how you can get clear on your ideas. I am also sharing a bunch of practical, mostly free tools that you can use to create an authentic and consistent visual language for your small business so that people immediately understand what your message is and have an easier time recognising and remembering you.

Here are the resources I talked about:
