Do you notice wrinkles that appear when you make certain facial expressions? Some of the most common we see are the forehead lines when raising your brows, frown lines when furrowing your brows, crow's feet or laugh lines when squinting your eyes, and even bunny lines when you scrunch up your nose.
Though a natural part of aging that occurs to everyone starting as early as their 20s, these dynamic wrinkles can present an undesired aged appearance, especially for those whose lines may develop a little more heavier than others. This, however, can be treated with a neuromodulator procedure. Also known as a wrinkle relaxer treatment, the intention is to quiet the activity of the muscles that are responsible for the formation of these lines.
Board Certified Vancouver facial plastic surgeon Dr. Buonassisi discusses neuromodulators (botulinum toxins) like Botox or Dysport and explains how they work, why treatment provider experience is so important, as well as the common and perhaps not-as-common areas of the face that they can be used to treat.
One good way to discern the skill of your lip injection treatment provider is to look at the techniques they have up their sleeve for administering filler. You might automatically picture a needle poking in and out of the skin when you think of a lip filler treatment, but an alternative way for select individuals is to inject with the passing of a blunt-tipped tube under the skin that looks like an extra long rounded needle: a cannula.
Today, Vancouver facial plastic surgeon Dr. Buonassisi goes into detail on the cannula technique for administering lip filler compared to the use of a needle, outlining possible pros and cons of each. For some lips, a cannula method might be better than a needle method for achieving the desired results, and vice versa. Only an experienced injector will know exactly what to decide on.
Real, honest answers to your injectable treatment questions from top Vancouver facial plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Buonassisi and advanced aesthetic nurse injector Lisa Roberge, RN at 8 West Clinic. Today, Lisa discusses the concerns she's increasingly finding from lip filler patients through her 20 years experience specializing in aesthetic injectables.
She and Dr. Buonassisi explore the epidemic of the rise in popularity we're seeing for lip injections, and why it's so important to be aware that lip injections are not just a fluffy procedure that any treatment provider can do correctly and safely.
Lisa discusses the truth about correcting "bad lip jobs", clarifies the idea of filler migration, and speaks on the fearmongering to potential candidates such as older patients looking for ways to rejuvenate their lower face. Dr. Buonassisi also touches on the keys to look for in a good treatment provider for getting your lips done.
Harmful fillers? Ducky lips?
With all the press out there about lip injection procedures, there is no doubt you’ve seen or read something negative about the treatment. However, if one does enough research, it’s completely possible to safely attain beautifully enhanced lips that give you a little boost in confidence—with peace of mind regarding possibilities of complications, and without looking like a duck.
Board Certified Vancouver facial plastic surgeon Dr. Buonassisi dispels common myths about lip injections and speaks on safety of dissolvable filler products, the variety of results you can get out of lip fillers, the right treatment providers you can look to, and injection techniques that are worth the research.
Skin rejuvenation techniques have come a long way, with advancements in technology bringing us the option of laser skin resurfacing to produce clinical results with increasingly less pain and downtime.

Not having much luck with finding your plastic surgeon match locally? Travelling for plastic surgery is completely possible, and with today's advances in technology, you can certainly get a valuable consultation done with a plastic surgeon you may be interested in.
Vancouver, Canada-based Board Certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Buonassisi explains how a virtual consultation via Skype video call works, with rhinoplasty surgery being highly visual in nature and therefore completely examinable over video.
The final step in an open rhinoplasty procedure is an important one. The closing stitch ties all the surgical changes together, and in an open rhinoplasty is important to be done carefully so as to leave as least visible of a scar as possible. Taping and cast application then sets the nose up to begin healing in the desired shape.
Watch rhinoplasty specialist Dr. Buonassisi close the rhinoplasty surgery for his patient Ola with dissolvable stitches and a cast as he explains his process.
Sharpening a bulbous nose tip and shortening a nose that extends out from the face a little too far are two very reasonable outcomes that can be achieved with rhinoplasty surgery. Known as tip refinement and deprojection, these techniques are difficult to execute correctly without access to the nose cartilages around the tip.
Board Certified facial plastic surgeon and rhinoplasty specialist Dr. Buonassisi is an expert in the open rhinoplasty approach, which is the ideal approach for safely making changes to the nose as in tip refinement or deprojection.
Listen in as Dr. Buonassisi performs these techniques for patient Ola while he talks through her live operation.
Hump reduction is one of the most commonly desired outcomes in a rhinoplasty surgery. With thousands of surgeries performed and countless hump reduction techniques executed for patients, Board Certified rhinoplasty specialist Dr. Buonassisi is expert in this procedure.
Listen in as he performs a hump reduction carefully customized for patient Ola's unique nose while he talks through a real rhinoplasty surgery.
Whether a slight crook off to the right or a visibly deviated septum, a septoplasty technique is what will be employed to help straighten the nose in a rhinoplasty surgery.
Done via an open rhinoplasty approach, facial plastic surgeon Dr. Buonassisi executes a septoplasty for patient Ola, who's nose slightly leans to the right. Listen in as he talks us through the surgical process of straightening the septum in a live operation.
Often stigmatized for its invasiveness; negative effect on recovery; and visible scarring, open rhinoplasty is a surgery procedure technique that facial plastic surgeon Dr. Buonassisi executes with expertise to allow for the most extensive possibilities in creating alterations to the nose to get the best possible results for the individual patient. Among the benefits of open rhinoplasty are greater precision and control when directly viewing the nasal structure, and better access for any manipulation of the nose tip.
The primary difference between the open and closed approach is found in the incisions, where open rhinoplasty incisions are made through the columella (hence the fear of visible scarring), and closed rhinoplasty incisions are made on the inside of the nose in the nostrils.
Listen in as Dr. Buonassisi begins a real open rhinoplasty procedure by starting with the incisions that will allow him to make the best possible alterations for his patient Ola.
On surgery day, your plastic surgeon will go over the surgery plan with you one last time before going into the operation. Ola chose Board Certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Buonassisi for her rhinoplasty procedure, who lays out the plan for her again with the techniques they have agreed on to get her the best results.
Listen to Ola and Dr. Buonassisi discuss in this important pre-surgery component of the rhinoplasty process as they talk in the operating room live just before her surgery.
Will I really be awake during rhinoplasty surgery?
Anethesia options for rhinoplasty can vary in level, and you can certainly (and preferably) be awake during the procedure safely and comfortably when administered IV twilight anesthesia by a skilled anesthetist, like Dr. Buonassisi will often opt for.
Today, Dr. Buonassisi answers patient Ola's last few concerns about conscious sedation for rhinoplasty before her surgery.
It's a fact that plumper faces make one look more youthful—think back to how chubby your cheeks were as a child. As we grow older, however, our skin's elastin and collagen levels drop while our epidermis thins out, giving our faces the more sunken look that gives away age starting from your 30's and 40's.
This age-related facial deflation, though, is something that can be combatted with injection treatments that volumize the face again, and this type of treatment is often called the non surgical facelift, the liquid facelift, or sometimes the soft lift.

Do you need some volume in your face? You might be experiencing a loss of volume as a result of the effects of aging, or you might just have an area that naturally could use added volume to help subtly sculpt the face. This is where dermal filler injections become an option: a non surgical treatment that can be used in a wide variety of ways to augment and rejuvenate the face when done safely.
Board Certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Buonassisi gives a rundown on what dermal filler injections are, the safest types of filler products, the areas of the face they can be used for augmenting, and keys to look out for in a treatment provider who can give the most natural-looking best results.
